Playing Persona 5 Royal. Got a text from Akechi on 11/16 asking the protag to hang out at JazzJin. Since I had no confident to rank up that evening and nothing better to do, I accepted.

Akechi then proceeded to explain that a girl once confessed her feelings for him at Jazz Jin, and he spent the whole time there thinking of a way to turn her down, bc there was something he needed to do.

Did... Did Akechi just give the protagonist the 'It's not you, it's me' speech? Because he knew he was going to kill him on 11/18??

I need to shout this at someone that actually played the game but Ann is incredibly gay right. Like I'm not looking too much into things she is just gay. Like how did the game say she liked the villains in comics something so tied to gay culture and still has the audacity to let us date her. How does she look at someone that is trying to tear her down and just be like she's so sexy, her confidence is amazing and sexy, wish I was just like her, and get away with being shipped with dudes. How does she talk about Shiho the way she does and Atlus has the audacity to pair her up with Morgana in the perfect reality (if I remember that spoiler right.) Are people blind to the way she talked to Makoto before she joined the team. Sure Ryuji and her are cute but like her interactions with him compares to the girls he can't compete.

This is also a problem in persona 4 like your telling me Chie Satonaka the girl that was called Yukiko's prince. The girl keeps talking about Yukiko in every link of her social link. (seriously you all she talks about her none stop. Look up her link Yukiko is mentioned a minimum of 2 times during each rank-up. It gets to the point of being like why are you even talking to me when you could just talk to Yukiko.) Like Yukiko, the girl that called Chie her prince never brings her up, yet Chie can't go a day without saying her name. How do you all date her when she's constantly talking about someone else. How the fuck does she suddenly like us. Narukami out her having so much riz he's making her bi .

i love makoto so much but fanon does her so much better (the good parts of the fandom) because in the game her character is so lack luster. they butchered her confidant it is so borning and not even about her. they made her a cop. A COP. they pushed this "canon waifu" role onto her (before sumire came along and did it Even Worse). and it SUCKS because SHE IS SO MUCH MORE!!! SHE IS SO MUCH BETTER!!!! SHE COULD'VE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER!!! the way i feel about canon makoto is the same way i feel about the canon ryuji events post komoshida where he's horribly mistreated and used purely as comic relief: i ignore them <3 my game now <3 never happened <3 my ocs <3

You are so right. I generally apply this to all characters in p5 bc the game does such a shit job of staying consistent with character arcs and personalities. Theres a desperate need to throw in perverse jokes at the expense of female characters and a need to show that the police (as a whole) are reliable people who are not influenced by things like money and power; only the BAD cops do that. Not to mention this obvious fatphobia and homophobia but i feel likes thats a given.

But back to Makoto. Shes a victim of bad writing just like everyone else. Ryuji during the kamoshida arc was fighting with self loathing and genuine anxiety, and aside from the like. One comment on Panthers outfit in the metaverse, hes more than well behaved. All of that is shelved as soon as Kamoshida is gone and replaced with him being weird comic relief (and the focus of alot of sexual jokes that were nonexistent in the beginning of the game). Anns arc about self love and empowerment is completely dropped as soon as the nasty bad guy is put away (so that its good to be weird about her w the Good Guys). Makoto loses her a chunk of her personality to be the mature waifu which is INSANE to me bc shes like. Not okay or normal at all 😭😭😭 she THINKS shes responsible and so does everyone else on her team, but its an act! She doesnt know shit! And she doesnt know that she doesnt know shit bc shes respectful and adults dont care about anything as long as u respect them!

Its very telling that for literally every single thief (and goro), you can see the exact moment the writers gave up on adding anything of worth to their characters outside of the social links. Its like they didnt know what to even do w the characters at their disposal after their main arcs were complete. No mention of friends hanging out without you, no mention of having group hangouts. Everyone is treated as a core, important member of the friend group DURING their arc, but outside of it, they are acquaintances at best. Theres nothing in the game that convinces you that these guys are legitimately friends who care for each other and do Friend Things. And i describe it like that bc there IS a game that treats them all as friends, and its strikers! Strikers/Scramble genuinely feels like the game p5 wanted to be; a road trip w your team where they stay up at night talking to each other and hanging out and doing things together that dont necessarily include you, the player. Its refreshing and lovely but it sucks that u get that kind of attention to detail in a ‘spinoff’ title

Still playing Persona 5 Royal. Got to the entertainment hall in Shido's palace, and the game asks me if I'm SURE I want to go downstairs. I save and say yes, of course.

Now, this is a first time playthrough. I've been spoiled many things about the game, but I absolutely did not expect an Akechi cutscene there.

And I love this cutscene, for many reasons.

First off, this is a TV interview with Akechi - no doubt he planned on profiting off of Joker's arrest and death from the start.

More importantly, we get to see Akechi's inner monologue - and he looks so damn sad for most of it. He says he wanted to be relied on and needed (which makes him a perfect foil for the protagonist). And what's striking, to me, is that he still uses his sad/down-looking sprite when he says he 'managed to dispose of any who got in [his] way'. This proves that he at least has regrets about the people he killed/mentally shut down, if not remorse.

And Akechi only stops looking sad when thinking '... All that remains is to tell him.' Guess he's thinking about Shido there, but not sure I this means he unconsciously wants his approval, or is just determined to get his revenge.

Also love that he didn't immediately question feeling 'dizzy' when he killed Joker('s cognition) - which was actually because of, you know, the remotely-activated metaverse nav. Instead he explains it to the TV hosts as 'Perhaps my mind was worked up due to the major task I had undertaken...' Sure, buddy. It's not that you were a little shaken from shooting someone you like (and who did all your available confident hangouts on my playthrough) in the head.

It's also fun seeing Akechi start to suspect he's been tricked because of a phone ringing in the audience - he is smart, after all.

I'm at rank 4 with Maruki rn and the thing that never occured to me 1st time when I played P5R but only now it's that he mention he got clawed by the cat he tried to help and 1st time when I played this game I was like "oh it's because he's so clumsy and silly" but rn I'm thinking... What if it was more to it actually? Like animals are said to sense either bad people or supernatural phenomenons and Maruki was basically a vessel for Azazoth so I'm thinking... What if the real reason Maruki was clawed was because the cat sensed Azazoth in him (both supernatural phenomenon and bad entity?) That would be an interesting theory ngl

Also it kinda plays well with the theory that Azazoth might either be (since basically in P1 manga it was said that "he has many names") or just close connected to Nyarlathothep (i mean in mythology sense yes, he is Nyarly's ancestor if I remember right? Or an offspring, I don't remember that well) and since Nyarly was basically called as ultimate evil in P2 it would makes sense to animal reacting to the "vessel's" body like that
