so you know how book authors, when they write the newest book, always include a description of the characters when we first meet them in the newest book, even though we already know what they look like? like, an example is sophie's incredibly gay description of biana in every book. we already know what biana looks like because we've read the first book, so this is redundant, but it's just convention to re-describe the characters' physical appearance with every book. this is obviously not exclusive to just kotlc, it's just a thing that book authors do.

this means that in the marella short story, we will most likely get a description of fintan.

guys. we could get a confirmation of fintan's hair length. it's not likely, but we could. yes, fintan's been in six books and has had no mention of his hair length. but didn't shannon finally address the fintan hair-length discourse with her statement that she pictures fintan with both long and short hair? maybe . . . just maybe . . . we might get canon fintan hair length? maybe? i know this is too much to ask, but i can't help but hold out hope. i know i'm probably wrong, but hey. you never know.

although if she does confirm it but says that it's short i will simply be rejecting that information and pretending it doesn't exist. although i don't see how that's possible. he's locked in a block of ice with nothing to cut his hair with. so even if it was short at first, it should have grown. and honestly, that strengthens my argument that long-haired fintan might be confirmed in marella's short story. because there had really been no reason to mention fintan's hair length in previous books, but now, shannon could insert a quick line like "his hair had grown even longer since the start of his imprisonment." something quick like that would be relevant to showing how much time has passed, as well as confirming what we all already know in our hearts and souls: that fintan has long hair.

I didnt realize the Marella Short Story had come out until I went to a bookstore recently and they had the paperback.

i think we need to actually consider the importance of canon marellinh, if that truly is what shannon meant to do (this does have to be taken with a grain of salt, since shannon is known for accidental queercoding.) after all these years of joking about the seemingly implied queer shit between the characters, to actually get something canonical? especially when a lot of us on tumblr are lgbtq+ in some way? it means so much and I genuinley cannot describe my feelings on it. to be in this fandom for years and all of a sudden have this? holy shit. even more insane when you consider a large part of the fandom is christian, many of whom are or have parents who are homophobic. this is a big move from shannon, and I genuinley cannot wait to see if it was intentional.

idk man it makes me think of marella being a little kid trying to braid her hair where she could see it (since her mom probably wasn't able to and her dad was with her mom most of the time). but her fingers being too small to do full braids, so she just did little ones. and then never grew out of putting little braids in her hair over big ones.

ok sorry for sending another ask but can you do some analysis of marella? just like whatever you want. I need to know how to characterize her.

you have nothing to apologize for. i'm going to answer your asks a little out of order for sake of thought progression, but I will try my best to help! (no short story spoilers, only reference to one minor line not about its plot)

For Marella, I think it's crucial to keep in mind how alone she is--or at least has been in the past. She was never fully part of her world because of her mom's condition, and she had no one to turn to. So she had to be the one standing up for herself, the one to figure things out.

So she keeps secrets even now she has closer friends. She's careful about the information she shares and when, and excellent at deflecting. She's a master of social spheres--not just the gossip, but of controlling what people see. And even with friends, that part of her is still there, unwilling to let them see everything; she's private.

Something I try to keep in mind with her as well is that she explicitly said she didn't think she was cut out for the kotlcrew's activities (Lodestar). She felt left out at first, but changed her mind. The only reason she's part of things now is because being a pyrokinetic turned her very identity into a rebellion. This wasn't a choice for her in the way it was for people like Fitz and Biana. We see this manifest in how she says she doesn't mind being bossed around. I'd describe her as almost exhausted, just wanting everything to be over. She has never had the chance at a normal, easy life. And while she loves her family, she's tired sometimes. So she follows orders, keeps to herself, contributes when she can, and is just waiting for it to end

That's more of her internally. Externally, she covers it up. She's peppy, and stubborn, and hits back. She plays at confidence and strength. Like how she makes a show of embracing her pyrokinesis and joking around when she has conflicted feelings.

Something else I've noticed is that she prods. So much. Take the lunch scene in Unlocked. She just kept talking about Sophitz and drama. Even when they got uncomfortable. Possibly to keep the conversation away from herself, possible because she's just like that. Either way, she doesn't let things rest, she keeps pushing--including past boundaries.

To sum all of this up: she is an incredibly self-reliant person because she had no one to turn to, making her private. It also makes her mask her true feelings and keep secrets a lot of the time, putting on a show of confidence and feisty strength that hides how tired and uncertain she is at times. She's talented and powerful, but has never belonged or opened herself up fully. So when writing her, when she talks she's never saying everything, and you'll have to really work through her layers or get her to say it another way.

Of course we can analyze her beyond this, but hopefully this is a helpful start!

Random idea, which KOTLC character use which social media the most

Sophie: Pinterest prob, needs images and esthetics to calm herself down

Dex: Tumblr. He has the chaos of Tumblr in him.

Fitz: I’d say Discord, he uses social to talk with the people, not for anything else.

Keefe: I’m not sure. TikTok I’d say. He’s def a video format guy, and there are so many things, he would find every niche and jump from one to another.

Biana: she’s an influencer on Insta. Showing herself, pretty pictures, encouraging people to accept their bodies as she accepted her scars, makeup and hair tutorials.

Tam: is he on social media? YouTube. He talks. Found his way to explain what goes in his head, he makes long videos about very special interests. Probably turns off the comments.

Linh: Pinterest. Shares pictures of her water sculptures, of every beautiful landscape she finds.

Stina: starts drama on Twitter/X.

Marella: on Twitter/X too, sometimes takes part in dramas, sometimes just watching them with popcorn. And goes on Tumblr to laugh and cope.

Maruca: has every social, likes everyone’s post, sometimes shares her most random thoughts in Instagram Stories.

Wylie: not a fan of social media, spends some time on Pinterest, on Instagram, doesn’t post anything.

Jensi: uh. Good question. He was on X but ended up thinking people were definitely too stupid, so moved to just looks at the comments (and sometimes add some) under YouTube shorts probably.
