I’ve never seen this talked about but I found this a truly interesting bit of Skull lore. When he was alive it was a good century before the Problem started and ghosts were generally thought as fanciful.

But Skull could clearly see them, enough to be able to ward them off while making the bone glass. It gives so much context as to how and why Skull ended up with Bickerstaff and possibly explains how he’s able to communicate in the modern day.

I think Skull had been another ‘once in a generation’ psychic talent like Marissa and Lucy had been. Hell, Marissa has proven that with enough talent one could see spirits pre-problem. Skull’s innate talent from when he was alive is the reason he’s able to talk to Lucy, another talented Listener. Does Skull even know how incredible it was to see spirits before it was a nation wide problem???

We talk a lot about about the parasocial relationships with celebrities and stuff, but what about when you've been entering the same person's name in a form at work doing data entry for years and then they call for IT help and you're like, "Oh my god, it's my friend Marissa! I'm so excited to finally talk to her!" but she's literally just a name on a drop down menu so all you do is help her reset her password in a calm, business-like manner even though you really want to ask her if she changed her name 2 years ago because of a marriage or divorce and either way congratulations.

Ok I have this major theory/headcanon about Marissa fittes from lockwood and co....

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT, THIS THEORY WILL SPOIL THE ENTIRE SERIES FOR YOU SO GO AWAY IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOKS

Ok now let's get to the point. I think that Ezekiel (the type 3 ghost with Marissa) was somehow mentally controlling or manipulating her. Coz the stuff that she was doing, like creating a portal, required a lot of knowledge about the other side. And during her time the Problem had barely started so she wouldn't have access to that info. And I think Ezekiel was the one who made her do that. Maybe he was doing it coz he was a type 3 (who are known to be extremely tethered to this world) and wanted Marissa to stick forever coz he knew that she was the only person who could talk to him. And we know how skull was so desperate to have some communication and connection, so Ezekiel's behaviour makes sense. And as @krash-8 rightfully pointed out, he just lucked out by finding a person who was selfish enough to do this.

Alas I actually have to wait for the final Lockwood book from my library which is giving me time to wonder what the hell the Orpheus Society's motivation is for developing goggles that let adults see ghosts and then not mass producing them. Sure relying on child labor is very classic villain behavior, but it seems like many if not most agents die and loads of adults are dying as well - this is going to have an impact on The Economy, and they could sell the devices for a tidy profit, so this can't be a capitalism scheme. Unless maybe the devices are super expensive to make?

Clearly some people are trying to break into the afterlife for reasons?? so maybe the goggles are for that purpose, but man there's not going to be much left of London at this rate. Perhaps their goal is to drag everyone into hell. Party in the afterlife. Bring your cute feather cloaks.
