"You use a scalpel, I prefer a hammer."
I am having so many thoughts about this line because sure Ethan is a scalpel but like no he's not he's...well ok let me try and meta for a second
Because Mission Impossible 1, he's a scalpel. By god is he a scalpel. He manipulates and deceives and seduces and tricks and betrays and sets people up and pulls off these delicate and precise maneuvers and leaves without a trace and he shows people what they want to see whether that's being flashy or subtle or dumb or smart or
And he survives the worst time of his life by using all of these skills as they're being used against him and he hates it
I think thats why I'm fascinated by his interaction with Max, because they're using the same playbook and they are aware of what the other is doing so they have a little fun with it. Like, Ethan is living through hell and he's desperate, and he's pretty scared of Max underneath that boyish grin. But it's fun. They're both being a good sport about it. Because it's mutual. But it's mutual in a very different way to Jim/Claire's manipulation of him is mutual. I'm not sure I'm expressing this well.
He hates it, just a little at first, and then by the end I think he hates it a lot because
Mission Impossible 2 happens and (if memory serves right because I haven't seen the film in years) he's trying so fucking hard not to be a scalpel. He's trying to be a hammer.
And he's rough and abrasive and reckless and little bit feral. He's split lips and bruises knuckles. He hits hard and expects to be hit harder, because he's punishing himself and punishing the world and it shows. He learns violence as a tool and learns how to use it. And he hammers his way through the problem because he can't stomach the thought of being a scalpel anymore.
And then, slowly, through mi3 and beyond, we see him walk the path back to being a scalpel.
He'll never forget what Jim and Claire did to him but maybe he doesn't let the wound fester anymore and let's it start to heal.
But he can never be a scalpel again.
Because he's learned the advantages of a hammer too.
Sometimes you need to be a ghost but sometimes you need to make a scene.
Because a scalpel could never fight the way Ethan fights. To the bitter end, blood between his teeth, and not necessarily his own. Would never drive a car off a building to get to the bottom faster, wouldn't drive a car post drowning to death, wouldn't crash a helicopter on purpose. Could never do the most extreme of the stunts that Ethan pulls off.
I mean, he's better at them because he can be a scalpel while doing them. But to do them at all...
But a hammer could never put on a mask and become someone else. Could never seduce a target. Or interrogate someone without them ever figuring out they were interrogated. Or break in somewhere to steal what they need and leave without a trace.
Walker could never have done what Ethan did in Paris. Because Lark and Walker weren't two different people. They were the same person with part of themselves hidden behind a vail so they could blend in. But Ethan. Ethan thought "I need to be Lark" and then became him. Dead eyed stare and "I slaughtered women and children with smallpox" and the White Widow trapped in his gaze terrified down to her marrow. A hammer couldn't do that. Only a scalpel.
Ethan swings between scalpel and hammer as needed and becomes something of the two combined, becomes something terrifying
It's what marks him, out of all the IMF, as the living manifestation of destiny. As the mind-reading, shapeshifting, incarnation of chaos. The one they tell stories about, the stories that surely can't all be true
So Ethan's not a scalpel. And he's not a hammer. I'm not sure what he is. And maybe Ethan wonders about that sometimes too.
Side note: I would like to invite the king of mission impossible 1 meta @deanwinchestersfloralwallpaper to way in, since I'm sure they'll be able to articulate all of this much clearer than I have

it’s a posting day I guess which is great timing with my lesson later….one cannot choose when hyperfixation strikes….anyway ethan/max. Is so fascinating. Because I really do see so much mutual interest and playfulness going on and I think Ethan is—attraction doesn’t play into it when you’re dealing with Ethan, but he’s interested by her. He likes her, there’s a back and forth that’s exciting and intriguing. And also so much fear, way more fear than he lets himself feel or acknowledge in the moment, but you can see it in the framing and the acting. He’s using her, and she’s using him, it’s a mutually beneficial business transaction, but the power dynamics are soo unequal. Max is being seduced, but she knows she’s being seduced. Ethan is out of options and desperate. He needs her to like him. And he likes her. And he’s scared of her.
Interestingly there’s a fundamental difference going on with Alanna. She doesn’t need Ethan to like her. She doesn’t have the power he has, and she wants it, she wants to own him and take him over, but—it doesn’t really matter whether he reciprocates the kiss or not, what matters is proving that he won’t stop her. It’s not a seduction because she isn’t trying to make him enjoy it. It’s better if he doesn’t. Also she IS SCARED OF HIM. God

Mission Impossible Rant ? Part 2
Continuing from Part 1. Last couple of weeks have been the most stressful ones of my life. So, I you have some good vibes and good luck, a girl could use some. I feel like I am falling apart. On that note, let's continue.
SPOILERS FOR MI:7
Mission Impossible- Rogue Nation: I consider this one the love child of MI:1 and Ghost Protocol. Rogue Nation introduces my fave, the icon, the legend- Miss Ilsa Faust herself. Rebecca Ferguson is a national treasure. What's interesting about this film is that it somehow doubles as a spy thriller and a rom com- Boy meets girl, boy goes on his first date with said girl , girl seemingly betrays boy. All very wholesome. The action pieces are great, but they don't take the central stage. Rogue Nation is more cerebral, a bit more noir-ish than its predecessors. And I loved every second of it.
2. Mission Impossible- Fallout: Fallout is my second favourite, tied with RN. It surpasses every movie just for that one shot of Henry Cavill reloading his arms (I'm only half kidding) . The storyline has a million villains in it, but honestly it melds with the action so well that you wouldn't even notice.
Fallout also introduces one of my faves of this series, one Alanna MItsopolis (daughter of Max from the first film). Vanessa Kirby is kooky in the best sense of the word as Alanna, girl just oozes charisma. Fallout also has a great story at its heart, and highlights Ethan's fatal flaw- loyalty to his people extremely well. It also drives the Ilsa-Ethan storyline a bit further (Might do a post on just these two at some point).
(And the score slaps too)
3. Mission Impossible- Dead Reckoning (Part 1?): Yeahhhhhhhhh. I might get flack for this but I didn't enjoy this as much. Following up a masterpiece like Fallout is difficult, but this film lacks soul. The enemy is an AI that growls. No, I am not joking. AI as an enemy is hard to do in an action thriller (Westworld s3 fumbled the bag too). The stakes are not well defined and the second half just drags on.
And now coming to the biggest issue of all, Ilsa's death. You are telling me that Ilsa Faust, spy extraordinaire, would lose a sword fight to a rookie? I call rats. Fridging a beloved female character so as to drive Ethan further is tasteless in my opinion. Unless she's not dead, in which case I take everything back.
It also retcons Ethan's past, which was always flimsy to begin. That being said, it's not all bad. Henry Czerny's Kitteridge returns (Revenge, Ready or Not), Pom Klementieff is an assassin and Cruise jumps off a cliff on a motorbike. This one just lacks heart, after Ilsa's death it all just seems so pointless.
I might to do post for Ethan-Ilsa and another for a fan theory I have. Bye and don't forget to be awesome :)

No but a Max Lives AU
Ethan's stood in that room, surrounded by people who will kills him if he slips up for just a second, listening to Zola's asinine plan and not taking his eyes off Alanna, the true danger in the room, for so much as a second, when movement out of the corner of his eye draws his attention.
She's dressed finely, understated where her daughter is luminescent, her deft touch evident where her daughter's rougher edges have shaped the space around them. Her hair is white, and she has more wrinkles, and she's using a cane, but he'd know those eyes anywhere.
And the whole world fades away as they lock eyes.
And Ethan knows he's fucked.
There's no way she doesn't recognise him, not with the slight softening of her smile.
There's fondness there, he's relieved to see, a sentiment he returns. No hard feelings. Mutual manipulation, betrayal, and use. Both aware of the others games and choosing to play. Neither of them got what they really wanted in the end, but they set eachother up so they could land on their feet. No hard feelings.
So, the question. Did she want to play the game?
Because Ethan was all in and now only she could deside which way this meeting would go.
Would she out him to her heiress? Or would she let it play out?
He watched as she analysed the situation.
Play the game? Or pull the plug?
She smiled.
He smiled back.
All in.
"Dear boy."
"Max."

ah, Fallout
that Mission: Impossible where:
Henry Cavill's pornstache carried 40% of the movie on its back, 30% by Lorne Balfe and the entire music department, 5% by Tom Cruise making Top Gun jokes in a helicopter, 5% by Vanessa Kirby and her balisong, and 5% by Liang Yang aka the guy who played the fake John Lark
Luther Stickell cries over finally realizing he's too awesome for this franchise to take out
Benji Dunn can be shipped with four people at once and is the sweetie in all of them, while Henry Cavill admits to shipping himself with Simon Pegg
Benji Dunn talks about Ilsa Faust like he and Ethan Hunt are her adoptive parents but in truth Benji and Ilsa take turns being the mom friend
Benji Dunn also finally gets to masquerade, as Wolf Blitzer and then as the bitch who personally gave him PTSD
Solomon Lane and Benji Dunn have a lot of hard feelings for each other and then the plot tries to climax it with a hanging only to end with us left hanging regarding their dynamic
Alanna Mitsopolis was characterized as the daughter of Max from the first movie for callback points and then everything else about her is just her being badass on her own
Ilsa Faust realizes she looks like the Swedish version of Ethan Hunt's ex-wife Julia Meade who laughingly and unironically passes her the torch to be Ethan's designated girlfriend as the plot demands
August Walker becomes iconic for warming up his boxing arms with the rhythm of a gun cock
Erica Sloane is not sure whom to be a bitch to and so understandably decides to be a bitch to everyone
Alan Hunley—goodbye
Tom Cruise breaks his ankle and pulls off a high altitude low open jump with Henry Cavill a few weeks later
Tom Cruise has to chase Henry Cavill on foot just because it's arguably faster than having to repeat in London the traffic sins he had already done in Paris
Sean Harris likes to sing pop songs to mess with people who pop him out of the trunk
Rebecca Ferguson and Simon Pegg play with lambs while Tom Cruise climbs a rope onto a flying helicopter
Rebecca Ferguson proves exactly why she was cast as a Bene Gesserit in Dune
Jeremy Renner did not come back because Chris McQuarrie tried to kill William Brandt just so the plot could have an inciting incident
Superman gets burned into Two Face
Shaun is almost literally dead, again

Songs My Mother Taught Me, Ch. 1
“Violin up,” said Jim, and Ethan raised it to his shoulder. Jim moved around him in a slow, appraising circle, and paused where Ethan couldn’t see. They were in the living room, all warm red walls and thick patterned rugs, a grand piano in one corner with its lid open like a mouth. Ethan was barefoot. From behind him, Jim’s hands found the points of Ethan’s hipbones, feather-light.
As a teenager, Ethan comes to Virginia to live with Professor Jim Phelps and his young wife, Claire, and train to become the best violinist in the world.
aka first installment of the classical music AU!!
