Kenneski [DEVLOG 1/29/2024]
Link to main post here. Link to the demo here.
Hey guys!
I wanted to write a little devlog, just so you guys are aware of the current state of Kenneski. 😊
The first chapter is almost fully written! It'll be around 30k words in total, maybe more... And I've been keeping up on the coding and whatnot. So once I've finished writing it, I should be able to just upload the demo right away! I'm hoping for this to be done around the middle of February. Things are taking so long on Kenneski because there is A LOT more coding and branching paths, unlike SoS. I'm also trying my best to create branching paths where you learn different information based on what choices you choose... Which makes the coding process a whole lot slower as I try and navigate my way around that. 😅
But I'm getting there! Thank you all for your patience as I work my way through this story!
And just because I'm super excited to give you guys SOMETHING, I put a little preview of the chapter under the cut...
Anyway! I'll hopefully see you guys in February sometime!
CURRENT WORD COUNT: 13,815 23,479 [+9,664]
“$Name!” It takes me a second to place the voice, an even longer second to realize that I’m staring at Roman.
A surge of relief flows through me, before I realize that there are more guards standing behind him, along with the unsettling lady from before. They all look at me with different emotions, but the most prevalent thought that rushes through my head is that I was just caught coming back from somewhere I wasn’t supposed to be-
Alinar comes up behind me then, his armor clicking and scraping against the stone, the sound echoing down the long corridor ominously. “And what do we have here?”
Roman looks at me, then the captain, with a slightly panicked look. If he lies about anything here, to try and help me get out of trouble, the other guards with him will more than likely call him out. He opens his mouth, as if to say something, but Captain Alinar beats him to it.
“Looks like we have a lost little mole, unable to find its way back to its hole.” Alinar comes up close to me, in my space. “Do you want to know what we do to moles that end up where they don’t belong around here?”
I don’t answer him, my mouth setting into a firm line as my heart beats wildly in my chest.
“We give ‘em a good ol’ WHAP-” He barks out the word, startling me as his breath hits my face with the ferocity behind it, as he knocks his armored knuckles against my skull softly, “-right to the little noggin’ with a shovel.”

Devlog #3: I DID WHAT NOW?
I posted an update on everything I've been working on a week ago and I feel like it's been eight-four years because I've done so much work since then. So, let's get right to it!!
Game Development Update
The first-draft manual is at 15k words - yay! Here's what has happened in the past week
There are five character classes, and maybe there will be more in the future. (For some reason, I have Tarot cards on the mind)
Spells, prayers, and other character-specific moves have been created.
Mini short stories, meant to add atmosphere, have been added to the draft (I had a lot of fun with those)
I have already recruited some pals to playtest the draft when I reach that stage.
Again, there is no set date for release, other than that maybe it'll be next year. I'm considering starting a Patreon or a ko-fi when we gear up for release. But I want to make sure everything is good before we make it even better!
Creating Spells and Prayers is Hard
I thought I would write more about the lore of the game/create more of the background and atmosphere, but instead I found myself creating moves for two specific classes. This is after consulting with my TTRPG-loving friends for advice. So, I've come up with a draft and specific uses for each one. If there is one thing I've realized is that if I am to craft a support/healer class, I don't just want them to be a healer. DPS cleric-type anyone?
Changes and Additions - this website
I posted this yesterday, but from here on out, this site will be devoted solely to updates about Abandon Hope. General updates, including reposts of TTRPG and other games that are of interest to me will be posted on the official Mushroom Witch Games website.
You can visit and follow at http://mushroomwitchgames.blog.
How I'm Feeling About the Process
I appreciate all the help I'm getting from my friends and interested parties. But I'm beginning to realize that it's really easy to get overwhelmed with tons are people are going to well at the same time. So, I've made it a point to accept the things I like and gently pass on the things I don't. I get it - everybody borrows from everything when it comes to TTRPGs. But I realize I have to be very careful and clear with myself if I am going to create a game I like, a game that I am proud of.
That’s all from the desk of the Mushroom Witch. See you all again soon with another update!!

Devlog 1 (technically)
Hi there! I just started this blog to detail my adventures of gave development, partially to try it out and partially to try and motivate myself, I hope you enjoy my suffering. Today was the second day I've worked on... er... '2D Test' (That's the file name lol), I have no plan! I'm just implementing things! Maybe it'll become something. I just really wanted to start developing again.
So, yesterday I had the day off (I'm ill) so I had lots of time. First, I implemented movement, it's a top-down 2D game so that was easy! Then I spent like 2 hours trying to understand timers, but eventually I got a sprint function in with a cool-down, and even some terribly duck-taped in UI to display it. Yesterday I also drew grass and path tiles (+added a tile map) As well as a temporary character sprite which is, hopefully, my profile picture.
Today I was super tired after school (thanks illness) so I did some more chilled-out tasks... kinda. I started making (maybe) a soundtrack (see below) with a software called 'musagi', it's very cool, makes great 8-bit music but it was last updated in 2008, so it's really just trial and error. I made pick-up-able pick-ups, and started on an inventory system as well today.
That's it for today, I doubt I'll post every day (or every day I work on it) but I'll try to keep these short and frequent, unlike this one lol!
I guess I need a cool sign-off?
May your code never have unseen issues,

Hi it has been a little while (nearly a month i think) since i last posted and if it isn't obvious, im losing motivation :((( I won't stop working on this game obviously but MAN IS MAKING AN ENDING REALLY HARD!!! i dont have much to say other than check out this new stuff i made so far that i dont think i showcased before here(??? i forgor) So yea sorry about no updates n stuff but I'm just kinda thinking in my brain of what to do with the story lol. hopefully I can come up with something for the few people out there who really want to analyze the story (although it'll prob be very confusing but its actually just really simple and i suck at showcasing a story through gameplay or something lol.,.,,.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I gave the images descriptions in case they dont make sense btw so read those if you want to know more about it (its not much but its something!) but yea thats all! still trying to get this game out by the end of this month but holy shit there is a lot coming out this month so I think i actually just picked out the worst month to release anything but who knows maybe it's fine idk!

Hey, a blog
Never really been one for blogging before, but I'm going to give it a go this year. This is really just for me, to make a series of I guess devlogs of my tabletop games, my attempts at videogames, and probably some other arts/crafts/photos because I have a tendency to forget that I've done something if I don't record it somehow, and then I sit thinking I've done nothing with my time (which makes me sad, and I'd like not to be).
So, run-on sentence over, here are some things I will aim to document this year:
I'm going to have a go at #dungeon23, I've gone and bought a journal and everything so hopefully it'll stick (more on this when I actually start tomorrow)
I began learning unreal engine a couple months ago and I have plans for at least one game, so I'll try and write about it's development here
Other tabletop stuff hopefully, I've not written so much as I would've liked in 2022 and I've got at least 7 half-started projects I'd like to finish
Maybe reviews of things I've enjoyed? I'd like to be more evangelical about the things that bring me joy, at least
I'd also like to make more art in general, tbh, so if I manage that it'll hopefully end up here too
This ended up more like new year's resolutions than I thought it'd be when I started but that's fine.
Anyway, post done. Let's see how this goes.

Devlog #1: The beginning of it all --30/07/22
Hello there! This is my very first devlog ever, so this is gonna mark the structure of these. I'll post these every week on saturday or sunday with some screenshots (and explanations) of what I did that week. This week I layed down the foundations for the game.
I stole a sprite of a cat off pinterest (not my art, I will replace it with my own art soon) and made them spawn every 3-8 seconds. It took me 3 days to get it right but it finally works and just look at them go!!
Tumblr media
The floor and background is a big WIP right now (as is everything in the game so far) but not to worry, all of the goodTM art will be added in due time. For now, the most important part is putting down all the groundwork. 3 days to make cats spawn and I don't even have any gameplay yet ;-;
But that's not all for this week!! I also did some work on the main menu.
Tumblr media
This is what it looks like right now. (as you can see, not very good) The background is a very rough prototype just to demonstrate the layout I want to create. Eventually it'll be a looping animation with moving clouds and birds. For now, it's a rough outline.
Next week I plan to do 2 things:
finish off the main menu (which is pretty much just making the settings screen fully functional) and maybe even make the proper art for it.
start getting into the gameplay! first I need to make the platforms and slots that players can place buildings. then I make the player able to place the buildings, and finally let the player pick up the cats and place them in the buildings
I got a lot done this week, let's hope I can keep it up next week! See you all very soon <3
