cr3e52 hot takes that I need to get out of my system

not main-tagging this and putting it under a cut because it's salty as hell, but I really just need to get this out of my system by writing it down. mayhap I will take parts of this and flesh them out into more considered posts later, with all the nuance and disclaimers about blorbo apologist. for now, have straight crankiness. spoilers for c3e52.

I can see the whole "The party/specifically Imogen is still thinking about joining Ludinus, they're so dumb and frustrating" discourse starting up again, and it's getting on my nerves. All of Bells Hells understands that Ludinus is the bad guy; nowhere in this episode did I hear any of them say that they should join his moon cult. In fact, Imogen was pretty clear that the god-eater was bad. It was actually F.R.I.D.A. who was closest to exhibiting a pro-Ludinus stance (Imogen says that Ludinus is trying to destroy the gods, and they say "good.") And even Deanna (who's no fan of the gods herself) tells them hmm, no, wait.

I continue to be frustrated at how much crap Imogen gets for--like, three canonical moments of doubt, which again, are not about whether the party should join the moon cult. I also think we should talk more about why she's tempted, which is an interesting mix of actual supernatural compulsion (Laura's rolling saves, y'all! she's being cued by the DM!), yearning for her mother, and her implied past ideation of death.

There's a difference between exploring strained relationships with gods, questioning the meaning and worth of faith, and wondering why this is the path you're on - and straight-up wanting to join the moon cult. It's okay if you don't like this narrative, or find it repetitive. But the question that continues to be in tension is not "Are Ludinus' actions right, and should we join his cult?" It's "Do the gods care about us? Why are we, the largely faithless group, the ones on the path to saving the gods?"

Though I understand the categorization of these two groups into "emotionally stable" and "powder kegs without a brain cell" (and to some extent agree - Chet, FCG, and Imogen have very volatile elements, and Orym, Ashton, and post-Delilah Laudna don't as much), I feel that this can get into the infantilization of Imogen and FCG especially. "Imogen has never learned to take care of herself." "The party will have to learn to function without their babysitters." Like. Yes, Imogen is very attached to Laudna, but this ignores the fact that she is a 28-year-old woman with a decade of experience in managing her condition, who has regularly played the even keel for both FCG and Laudna herself. And this also limits the way we can view the other half of the party. If they're just the long-suffering adults dragging their idiot companions along, there's no room to address, say, Laudna's arrested development (which I believe is still a facet of her even post-Delilah) or Ashton's rage and projection onto parental relationships.

(Since I'm very ornery in this post I will also say that buying into this read too much can flatten the relationships between the starting pairs into simplistic tropes--one is only the caretaker, and the other is only the one being cared for. And that bugs me, because there are a lot more reasons why these pairs have stayed with each other--healthy or unhealthy--and those are also [if not far more] interesting.)

Pending thought: Mayhaps I should start exclusively using a personal tag for posts from now on instead of main tags. I try to see the best in this kind of stuff but admittedly, part of why I made that post is cuz “well I shouldn’t have to limit my tag use if they aren’t” since a lot of vehement stans put stuff in the main tags too.

Even then, I like to expect discussions instead of arguing, and if it is arguing I like to keep it relatively contained. I just hope from now on it doesn’t become bigger than what I want it to be. I need to make those changes myself though, so yeah I’m probably gonna change how I tag things.

so for a couple months now i’ve been seeing mutuals + other users in the main tag with opinion posts on the state of smosh, and i’ve been taking a great deal of pleasure just reading through people’s thoughts. but as a longtime Opinion-Haver here in the smoshblr lmao, i figured mayhaps i can voice my own thoughts -- not on what i think is wrong with smosh, because i and so many others have already spoken up on that, but what i think is necessary for smosh to move forward and grow.

1) acknowledge former cast members.

there is gold within the people we currently see in front of the camera for pit and games. we adore ian, courtney, damien, and shayne. it’s always super exciting to see keith, olivia, and noah in videos. newer additions like kimmy, jackie, ify, and some other crew-members-turned-talent have real potential for becoming full-time cast members. but i think for fans, there exists a sore spot, or at least a currently-unanswered call for closure, in relation to the former members of smosh.

i think a lot of longtime fans were pained to hear about mari’s departure from smosh, how it was unexpected for her and how smosh never gave her the closure that everyone wanted. but even more concerning than the disappointment surrounding her entire experience, other members such as joven, boze (one two three), and sohinki (one two) have spoken out about the directly harmful/ill-willed actions of current smosh execs and vps, both during and after their times at smosh.

tbh it might be too late for an apology or direct acknowledgement from smosh, and anyway i think these former cast members would just like to move on from all the smosh drama. but the absolute least smosh could do is to quit pretending these former members never existed at all! like, they could do something as simple as including mari, boze, sohinki, joven, and lcorn’s yt channels under the smosh games channels tab -- i’m talking THAT bare of a bare minimum. the moment smosh stops wearing kid gloves around the ghosts of these ex-members, is the moment fans will no longer feel the divide between “us” and “them”. (not to mention, it’s just the right fuckin thing to do.)

though, i do think in order to overcome that (perceived?) divide, smosh really oughta...

2) do something about the matt raub situation.

i keep it vague with “something” because i feel like there are a variety of actions smosh/matt raub could do to heal some of those wounds (and to stop some of the bleeding). these actions include:

have ian (or perhaps some other exec?) issue a statement acknowledging the grievances against Nondescript Smosh Employee(s), and list the actions the company will take to improve the situation - definitely a cop-out, businesslike response, but nonetheless a step in the right direction

have matt raub issue a public apology to former cast members, and list the actions he will take to prevent these sort of situations from ever happening again - this is least likely to happen imo

fire matt raub - also unlikely, probably difficult too

stop putting matt raub in front of the fucking camera.

the last point is one of the easiest things smosh can do to at least begin to mitigate some of the damage. i’m not saying it’s the be-all end-all option, because frankly i think he should be held more accountable for the way he’s treated these supposed ~forever members of the smosh family~. but it sends a horrible message when you have a guy, whom according to multiple people has done some pretty shitty stuff, publicly interacting and joking around with the rest of the cast, aka people we are supposed to trust and want to support.

even if the current smosh cast doesn’t believe a single word from former cast members, it does not do anyone any good to be seen enabling interacting with matt raub on camera. if the rest of the cast and crew is trying to prove a point by lifting up matt’s voice in order to reject the ex-members: first of all, fuck them, but second of all, the statement is not clear and there are honestly better ways of taking a side.

and even from a business standpoint -- at this point, i don’t think smosh can really afford to alienate the large chunk of viewers who aren’t comfortable with watching videos with matt in them!! many of the diehard sg fans from as late as 2018 have simply lost interest in sg, as a result of both the loss of og members and the inclusion of the man who apparently drove those og members away.

of course, many fans have more naturally lost interest in smosh, smosh pit, and smosh games, because right now, smosh really just needs to...

3) prioritize making content that is fun/exciting to make.

there will always be people on youtube just trying to profit, and there will always be youtubers who need to make content they might not like or are proud of, in order to pay the bills. but youtubers and fans alike know that the optimal way of being successful on youtube is to make content you want to make, and make it well.

smosh definitely has the second half of that formula. they’re a well-known channel with a lot of history, a lot of clout. they have the means and the fan support to make LITERALLY whatever they want.

now maybe this is sort of presumptive, but i feel for years now, smosh has devoted a lot of its talent, effort, energy, money, and resources into producing content they’re just not all that jazzed about! this isn’t to say they won’t ever have fun while making a video, or that it’s never rewarding for them to make a video that gets a ton of views. i’m just saying that in the endless ebe’s and tntl’s, i have trouble thinking that they’re not burnt out to a certain degree.

it’s the increased emphasis of online relevance over having plain ol fun. you can look at main channel alone, plus you can see the way they promo certain videos, and you can just sorta sniff out which ideas were passion projects, versus ideas that were attempts at milking one initial good idea, versus ideas that were just trend-hopping/bandwagoning. idk, you can just tell. like, do you sincerely believe that anyone at smosh reeeeeaaaally wanted to fuckin make “every cvs ever”? do you legitimately think there was anything about cvs stores past one chuckle of a joke that reeeeeaaally required making an entire video about it? (other than the fact that it’s relatable and that sometimes amusing things can happen in drugstores?)

just think about it this way: smosh is STILL operating under the exact same mechanisms and structures that brought us “every bird ever”. which is sorta funny ngl, but i just can’t imagine smosh being entirely okay with that, y’know what i mean?? and this ties into exactly why smosh needs to...

4) maintain an honest and open outlet of communication with the fans.

the success of so many personality-based youtube channels comes from the honesty of the content creator. and i don’t mean everyone has to be uber-vulnerable and spilling tea and baring all for us, but like... the cast is allowed to occasionally be Not entertaining with us. they’re allowed to talk about something serious, in a serious manner.

this means that if something is burning them out or just not working with them, they’re allowed to tell us directly that they’re putting a series on the backburner. or they could at least do the whole youtuber limbo of them posting “hey guys, we’ve been having troubles shooting tntl :( is that something you’d still really want to see?” and us replying “<3 all that matters is that you guys are having fun making it” and then they stop making it and then WE BOTH KNOW that everything’s chill and the algorithm sucks and everyone can move on. truly, most fans just want smosh to be real with us.

i thought the smoshcast would take the role of that outlet for them, something that would let them explore topics (and potentially acknowledge some fan concerns), outside of the limelight of the main channels. something fun, yet personal, engaging, and enriching. but i think at certain times, perhaps because of the somewhat-demanding upload schedule, the smoshcast morphed into “just another piece of content for the fans” -- same with twitch streams, which were supposedly intended to expose fans to a rawer, realer version of sg shoots, but which clearly has its own motives in itself, ones that fans have already discussed extensively across social media.

i know running smosh is basically like running a business. i know a lot rides on their success. but it’s not sustainable to seek success on youtube from the top-down, from the viewpoints of executives. youtube requires you build your success from the bottom-up, starting with the viewers. smosh has a community that’s stuck around for years, one that grew out of two guys who weren’t afraid to look like idiots on-camera -- freely, openly, honestly. there are so many fans who are champing at the bit to support smosh, but for one reason or another, it’s getting harder for them to do that. if smosh has any intention of keeping those fans, they need to change.

but that’s just my opinion... thanks for reading. 👁👄👁

Writing Update January

Hey there, folks!

For all those of you interested in that sort of stuff, I’ve put a bunch of things that I have been working on since the start of the year underneath the cut, as per usual ;)

Meanwhile, for those of you not interested in reading more on my writing, here, have a gif of Sabo being in just as much of a delightful mood as I find myself having rn:

Upside: I got way more writing done than I thought I would, even with everything else going on! :D

Downside: Nothing’s finished yet and there are so many mistakes to correct, so many-!

All of my writing this month has been for the One Piece fandom.

Chapter 14 of my Buggy Time Travel AU is coming along nicely! ;D It’s got 4k to it by now, so you can expect for that story to be updated sometime in the next two weeks. (do mind the tags for this one, please)

The two side stories for this particular AU of mine that have come into existence last October/November already feature a good 20k altogether. More is to follow soon. They’ll most likely end up having around 60k in total and be put online as soon as we’re at/we’ve passed chapter 24 of the main story, so there’s a ways to go, still!

As of yet, it all follows along my plan *rubs hands* and the plot’s only changed marginally, all in all, so as to better fit the story line that’s been developing lately.

Besides all of this, I have also started writing for at least one “oneshot” (that hasn’t stayed a oneshot but which shall, in the end, have about 10 chapters to it and it’s already got 10k+ to it *insert longsuffering sigh here*) and another oneshot that’s also passed the 1k mark with no end in sight as of yet. Yay? More to read for y’all, in any case. =^_^=

On top of that, I’ve got one request: is anybody willing to beta read the abovementioned (what should end up being) 60k One Piece fanfic of mine that's not yet been published and of which around only 1/3rd have already been finished/written thus far? I need someone to kick me and react to the story so I can keep writing, at the moment it's going at a bit of a snail's pace..... I call it "beta reading" but really what I need is someone reading through what I've got so far and tell me what they think about the thing, mayhaps give me some pointers and potentially check in on me every now and again to see how far I've come? You can dm me for more details, should any of you out there be interested. ^^’

Everything put together, I’ve managed to write 25k in the past 20 days and I am incredibly proud of that, to say the least.

So, yah, just wanted to share this quick update with y’all before going back to the regularly scheduled content. :)
