“You’re staring.”

Steve snapped his eyes back up, nearly giving himself whiplash. He sat up straighter. “No," he insists. "No, I’m not.”

Sam gave him a knowing look. The tips of his mouth curled upwards, an amused glint in his eye.

“Look, man,” he began casually, running his fingers over the rim of his beer. “I get it. Recovery ain’t easy and it’s a big new world you woke up to. If I was in your place, I’d probably take all my chances, too.”

“Uh-huh,” Steve drawled unsurely, taking a sip of his drink and regarding him. Asgardian mead pleasantly made its way down his body, warming him up to more liquid courage. “What do you mean by recovery?”

Sam opens his mouth to elaborate, when a loud clang from somewhere behind them interrupts their conversation.

They look back and see Darcy with a mournful look on her face, holding on to the flute of an otherwise shattered champagne glass littered on the floor.

“I can, like, totally pay for that,” she mumbles sheepishly into the crowd.

Pepper is by her side the next second, already picking up fragments of glass and disposing of it just as quickly. Tony just laughs it off, and just like that, the party continues.

The overhead skylights from the makeshift bar he assembled in the Avengers Tower glistened under the wide sky. Pop music wafted all over the bustling partly, filled to the brim with a generous number of people enjoying themselves. Thor with his hand clasped on Jane’s waist, whispering something that made her laugh; Hill and Rhody on an animated conversation by the end of the bar. All of them, in a rare moment, loose.

Steve locked eyes with Natasha from the corner of the room.

His grin, then, comes just as embarrassingly easy. He waves. She gives him a small smile before turning her attention back to Barton. Steve frowns.

“Jesus,” he hears Sam hiss. “You got it bad, Cap.”

It’s not a gradual thing.

Steve isn’t someone who minces his words or plays diplomatic charmer. His vitality burned, in a way foreign to a world that had long been too jaded of proper men and archaic chivalry.

Captain America, back from the dead, yes: but also, and it was growing easier and easier to see, he himself ushered in a resurgence of basic morality stripped from ages of misuse and abuse. It was a basic thing, human decency, and he had simply reminded the world of exactly how easy it could be.

Steve came to carthage burning, but he flamed the embers of fire without ever having to wield a weapon. It was his nature to simply walk in the line of fire. And Natasha knows, if she is ever as sure of anything, that: he would no sooner rot in hell than let someone else walk over the flames for him, he had to be made to.

“Steve,” warns Natasha, a steady hand clamped over his shoulder against the fracturing landscape all around them. “Let me handle this.”

It was then he would turn to her, sometimes, and it scares her: the naked vulnerability he displays, the unyielding confidence in his frame, the complete and utter surrender of control. It is a ghastly little thing, the weight of his unburdening, but it only ever dawns on her when the ringing in her ears have stopped and the guns have mellowed: “Okay,” he nods once. “I trust you.”

Natasha should have seen it coming sooner.

It’s not that Steve hangs on her every word, is on her beck and call, or does whatever she tells him to do at the drop of a hat. He doesn’t tail after her like a lost puppy, because for all intents and purposes they were evenly matched at almost every pace; he was the commanding officer, she the shadow leader.

But maybe what tears at her conscience is that it also goes like this: hey nat, he would say, thanks for having my back out there, or been awhile since i drank with someone, or i’m here if you need to talk too you know? or, and perhaps most damning, is: how about a friend?

Steve was acclimating slowly to the surface, in a way that he knows best and works for him. It is an intimate baring of his soul, and the stripping of her own to make sure it doesn’t totally push him over the edge just before he learns to plant himself on the ground again. It’s easy, then, to play a part: if only he didn’t blindside her with improvising the script every so often it leaves her breaking character more often than she likes.

Because Steve was not of the divine kind, the one measured up to the greatness of gods. He had such grounded faith; and Natasha, for all she deemed herself worthy, had already started carving herself a place six feet under.

“It’s a transference thing,” Sam tells her one day in a low voice, when they’re waiting for transport and Steve is somewhere behind going over the mission details again with Fury. “But he means well. If it’s any help, this is actually an important breakthrough in the recovery process.”

Natasha feels herself ruminating over his words, because Sam would know about it best, working at the VA and all. He would probably know, too, then: “But,” she falters, her entire body in knots. “Why me?”

Sam doesn’t take a beat to answer. “Why not you?”

Steve loves so nakedly, both unforgivingly kind and passionately earnest: it is like fresh mildew unfurling from earth, dusk creeping at dawn; a silent but steady little thing. It is comforting, the rhythm of his heart: but oh, does it burden.

“How does it feel knowing you got Captain America wrapped around your finger?”

Natasha staggers a little, stopping the momentum of the sandbag just before it hits her square in the face. Her eyes flitter over the ring, making sure Steve was still busy testing the limits of Sam’s misery by boxing, before turning back to glare at Clint on the other side of the bag. So much for a sparring partner. “What?”

“Come on, Nat,” Clint returns, sounding a little too cocky for her taste. He pushes the sandbag to her side a little. “He’s like a dog with a bone around you. It’s cute, really, if not a little stalker-ish.”

“That’s not—he’s—” Natasha stammers, trying to reign it in and getting her breathing under control. “Steve is just adjusting. Fury assigned me to make sure he does that as smoothly as he can.”

“Right, of course,” Clint doesn’t drop the knowing look on his face, but the edges of his eyes soften a little. He ignores the way Steve glances at their direction none too subtly, a worried frown on his face. “It’s scary, isn’t it?”

That sobers her up instantly.

Natasha nurses her features into steeled determination, squaring her shoulders and tightening her jaw: but just as telling, however, is the slight crack in her voice when she says: “I’m fucking terrified.”

Hello and welcome to Random Cat Facts(TM)! In which I ramble about probably useless cat things! I don't know how useful any of this is for dragons, but oh well, lol. Let me know if you have any questions, or want something specific :-)

Other cat people, feel free to chime in! I'm sure I've missed important stuff! And my knowledge may be off, or my experiences different from yours!

(Disclaimer that all cats are different, your mileage may vary, etc. :-) )

Cat's do this fun thing called "mirroring." Basically, they copy behaviors. You'll often see cats sleep next to each other in the same position. They also try to mimic their humans - this often manifests in things like cats sitting on your keyboard, or the book you're trying to read. Giving them decoy can help, but not always, lol.

Cats like tight spaces. They'll wedge themselves into corners to sleep, and it does not look comfortable, but it helps them feel secure. Giving nervous cats a safe corner is often helpful - when I did rescue work, I'd leave their transport crate in a corner with a bed in it and a towel over it, and that was where they would sleep.

Cats don't really meow at each other, but they meow much more at humans. Their meows can be extremely expressive - you learn to tell what different ones mean, and they are often very specific! All cat mewos are unique, and require you to learn them individually.

Cats also have very expressive body language, but it can be quite subtle if you aren't familiar with cats. Many people unfamiliar with cats don't pick up on all of it without practice or instruction - attentive owners may point things out or notice responses that the other people don't quite notice.

A surprising number of cats enjoy carrying large toys around and howling in the middle of the night.

Some cats have no shame, and are perfectly happy to demand attention. Most cats are far to dignified to actually admit they want to be near you, lol. They follow people from room to room, hanging out a few feet away, very deliberately not noticing you. Your presence has nothing to do with their decision to be in this room.

They may also hold a grudge - slight a cat, and they will hardcore ignore you for a bit. Ours would always do this after an extended trip, we'd get home and they'd pretend we don't exist for a solid 12 hours lol. Leaving the room, pointedly not looking at or acknowledging us, not coming for food, etc.

Cats are very clean! They groom a lot! If you touch them, they may need to groom it off immediately! With much twitching and indignation!

When cats are happy and trusting, they do a few things. Almost all do an adorable slow, squeezy-eyed blink. I've found that slow blinking at rescues seems to help them establish a bond with me faster, although that may just be confirmation bias, lol. Some also lay on their back, exposing their vulnerable belly (it looks like they want belly rubs - for most cats, this is a trap, lol). They also sit and/or sleep with their back to you, trusting you to protect it.

Cats go INSANE at whistling. Different cats may respond more strongly to specific songs. They chatter, and circle, and get hyper-stimulated. Whistle long enough and they'll start fighting.

A hyper stimulated cat typically gets twitchy, starts licking anything and everything (harder and harder), and will eventually bite. They're not being mean, they're just over-stimulated! Too much petting, petting too hard, whistling, scratching the base of their tail, rough play, etc. can all trigger this response.

Cats are territorial. They're generally more tolerant of other animals than of other cats. Introducing them typically requires an acclimation period, under supervision for safety at first.

Cats have a death chatter that they make when stalking prey (or a toy, lol). It's basically them using the jaw motion they use to break the necks of small birds and animals.

Some cats chase their tails. In my experience, the smarter the cat, the more likely they are to do this (and other dumb things, lol).

Our Savaged Souls

Trying out a new thing of posting the full chapter on tumblr. You can read from chapter one one AO3 (unless it’s not your thing, and in that case you can send me an ask and I’ll be like! sure! I love to be accomodating! I’ll post full chapters on tumblr :) )

Feyre Archeron is born under the new Wall separating human lands from the Spring Court- her home. She hunts in her forest, forms a friendship with the High Lord's third son, and is introduced to his friend. Then it all goes wrong.

Chapter 6

Tamlin soon forgets his ire about the Suriel. Or at least, he pushes it down far enough and eventually bounces back, dragging her out on more adventures. He manages to swing by for a few hours of her birthday party, and then is required at home for much of the spring. By the time the summer rolls around, Feyre can tell he’s eager to be away from family and make up for lost time.

The latest outing is a jaunt to a pool of liquid starlight, one that Feyre has visited only a handful of times. It’s one of Tamlin’s favorite places, she knows, and she felt the honor in the first invitation.

Her linen dress brushes just past her knees, only half of her hair pulled back in anticipation of a relaxing afternoon spent lounging in the shade and wading in the water. No boots or tight braid needed today. Her contribution to the picnic is a batch of scones, some ruby-red cherries, raspberry preserves, and roasted almonds. With her bounty and dress, Feyre decides to winnow rather than pick through the forest.

Feyre expects it to be a small party, but she does not know how small it actually is until she arrives.

There are two people there. Tamlin and Rhysand.

Of course. Rhysand. Of course he is here.

“You managed to make it on time!” Tamlin greets her with an enthusiastic kiss on the cheek and takes her basket from her hands, retreating to add it to their pile of food and blankets. The space already looks inviting, dappled in shade. Sweating bottles of lemonade and ice water peak out from a wicker basket full of white porcelain plates with painted primrose borders and crystal glasses. A partially wrapped loaf of bread and hard cheese rests on top, along with a sharp knife and a bounty of fresh fruits.

Feyre scowls. “I was late one time, Tam, it’s not funny anymore.” She glances at Rhysand. It would be impossible to pretend he’s not there. It’s just the three of them. It would be rude to not say anything. It should not be difficult at all to just greet him. She wrangles her expression into something pleasant. “Hello, Rhysand.”

“Feyre darling,” he smirks. “I thought you were calling me Rhys now?”

She actually turns a bit red and fumbles. Thankfully, Tamlin’s big mouth saves her. “When did that happen?”

“A while ago.” Rhysand reclines on one of the picnic blankets, lounging like a cat. He waves a hand. “Won’t you join us, Feyre?”

There’s really no way to refuse. She takes a seat, folding her legs under her. “It’s hard to break a habit. I’ve been calling you Rhysand for a long time now.”

“I’ll have to keep reminding you, then,” he says as he roots through a picnic basket, plucking out a tin of cookies. “Want one?”

“Thank you, Rhys,” she stresses his name, plucking one of the cookies from his hand.

He smiles at her, and the tension seems to melt away.

Has she always looked at him like this, or did the Suriel trigger something in her soul that flipped the world upside down? Feyre wonders how long this feeling, this awareness of him has been growing in her heart, encroaching so slowly and naturally that she has not noticed until someone drew her attention to the blossoming.

For a child of the Night Court, Rhys looks good in the sun. She has always known he is beautiful, but something has changed. As they chat and nibble on the picnic, Feyre observes him. There is something fuller in his laughs, more playful in his smirks today. It would be impossible to forget that he is an Heir— powerful radiates from his body and he approaches every conversation and confrontation with arrogance. He is still guarded. But if his true soul is an impenetrable fortress, Feyre thinks they’ve passed through the gates of one or two battlements.

The sun beats down on them, stronger now that the world has moved and positioned itself in summer. The Day Court is absolutely sweltering, Rhys informs them, and there’s been some problems with heat sickness in Summer. In Spring, Feyre keeps an extra canteen of water and takes frequent breaks when romping about.

Sweat gathers at her brow and pools on her upper lip. Eventually, sipping cool drinks and relaxing in the shade is paltry comfort.

“I’m going for a dip,” she stands. “Anyone want to join?”

The males scramble up after her. It’s some work to unlace her stays, so they end up shucking their clothes and splashing into the pond before her. Feyre finds herself sighing in relief when they don’t look twice or offer to help. It would be well meaning from them, her friends, if not a little playful and flirty. But if Rhys offered…

Mother above. Surely it should take her longer to fall?

“Are you coming?” Tamlin calls from the water, flicking some water in her direction. It glitters like diamonds where it lands on the grass and dirt. It might not actually be water, but Feyre has never known what else to call it.

She scowls. “It takes a little longer for me.” She toes off her slippers, wiggling her feet in the cool grass. In the past, Feyre hasn’t had trouble with stripping down to almost nothing and jumping into lakes and rivers. Now, she keeps her chemise on and tries not to think too hard about it. After tossing her hair pins on the blanket, she wades in.

The pond is cool and refreshing. Sunlight almost blinds her as it bounces off the surface. Feyre glides through the water, slowly acclimating herself. When she dunks her head under and emerges, the liquid starlight clings to her lashes and makes the world look brighter and chaotic. She swipes a hand at her eyes and blinks to clear her vision.

Tamlin floats on his back, golden hair floating around his head like a halo. Rhys lazily swims a circuit around the pond, much like she was. Feyre treads in place for a moment before floating a bit closer to Rhys.

Sensing her presence, he surfaces. Feyre’s breath catches. She’s sure he reads something incriminating on her face, but before he can speak she opens her mouth. “This pond suits you.”

“Oh?” he questions. His feet must reach the bottom, because while Feyre is working to stay afloat at the edge, he is merely holding out his arms to keep himself steady.

“The starlight.” Her eyes roam over his face and dip down to his neck before shooting back up. If she looks too far down she won’t be able to return her gaze to his face. “Son of the Night Court. It all works.” She waves a hand in his face, and he laughs. The starlight clinging to his hair and shoulders and dripping from his chin bring out the constellations in his eyes.

“You don’t look too bad yourself, darling,” Rhys nods at her.

She wishes she had a mirror, if only to try and memorize her own look for a painting later. “Do I?” she asks, leaning back a bit in the water and pretending like his words do not send her heart racing.

Her eyes are on the sky, but when Rhys is silent for too long she propels herself upright. He’s frowning a bit, looking more unsure of himself than she’s ever known him to be. “Rhys?”

“I can show you,” he says, expression much too serious for an afternoon swim.

Feyre laughs softly. “You have a mirror? Where are you hiding that?”

Rhys’s smirk lacks some of its swagger. He brings up a hand and, from nowhere, conjures a hand mirror. “I do have some tricks up my sleeve. But that wasn’t what I was talking about.” As quick as it appeared, it's gone.

Feyre cocks her head. Rhys wants to show her what she looks like, but without a mirror or any reflective surface...and it’s not like he’s an artist…

She gapes a little, swimming closer. Tamlin is still floating on his back, hearing muffled from the water, but she lowers her voice anyway. “You’re daemati?”

It’s the only thing that makes sense. And she would expect no less from Rhys. In addition to being obscenely powerful, to have this as well...he won’t just be a powerful High Lord, he’ll be unquestionably dominant.

His brows lift a little in surprise before his expression settles. “Clever girl. I shouldn’t be surprised that you guessed.”

Feyre bites her lip, torn between being pleased and being concerned. She does not think that Rhys has ever used his power against her. But how would she know? She has heard plenty of stories, has been given plenty of reasons to be wary of the Night Court. Feyre is not so arrogant as to think that she is a worthy target, but just the thought of her thoughts being combed through or someone getting information from her mind is disconcerting.

Rhys— whether by looking at her mind or her face— knows where her thoughts lead her. He moves a little closer as well. “I have never looked in your mind, or Tamlin’s for that matter. I’m not that kind of male.”

“I know.” The words are said without thinking, but they ring true.

He does not look convinced. “If I wanted to use you, I would have hovered in your mind as you hunted the Suriel and asked them a question myself. I would have probed your mind to see what you asked.”

She nods. Part of her knows it to be true, but another part, an animal, instinctual part, shies away from him.

But the Suriel told her to trust Rhysand.

It’s not effortless, but she stays. “You keep it a secret?”

“We keep it quiet,” Rhys admits. “We” probably means his family, his Court.

What does it mean that there is a secret daemati ready to inherit one of the mightier Courts of Prythian?

If she was a good person, she thinks, she would tell someone. But being a good citizen and a good friend are directly opposed at the moment. It does not take Feyre very long to decide which title is more important to her.

“I won’t tell anyone.” She values her friendship with Rhys, trusts him more than she maybe should. Even considering what the Suriel said, she would be a fool to throw herself into his arms blindly.

“Thank you.” Under the water, he reaches out to squeeze her hand. “I know you still aren’t comfortable with this.”

It’s difficult to meet his eyes, so she looks down. Right at the curves of his shoulder, where brown skin and black ink peek from beneath the surface. Her mouth goes dry, but she manages to force words out. “It is...strange. To realize how vulnerable I’ve been.”

There are dangers in Feyre’s life, but she has always known them. She has rules, has trained and armed herself against threats. Don’t stay out too late after night falls in the forest, don’t stray too close to creatures who have young ones to protect. Keep your eyes averted when speaking with the High Lord and try to not attract too much attention, bite your tongue in front of certain people and laugh and gossip in secret circles only.

There is no such defense against Rhys. At least, she assumes so until he speaks. “I can train you to shield your mind.”

Feyre blinks, shocked. “You can?” It’s possible? And he would offer that to her?

A deluge of cool water drenches her. Feyre cries out in shock, whirling to scowl at a laughing Tamlin.

“You two are much too serious,” he says, slapping the surface of the water again to send another splash their way. “What were you talking about anyway?”

“We had a run-in with a daemati in the Night Court a while back,” Rhys says smoothly. In an instant, his cool confidence is back. He swims away from Feyre, closer to Tamlin. She is sure there is a good reason he turns his back and tells herself it does not sting. “I was telling Feyre that I wouldn’t mind offering some lessons on how to shield her mind.”

“Why would you need to shield your mind?” Tamlin asks her.

She scowls. “Why wouldn’t I? Don’t you want to keep your thoughts private?”

“Sure,” Tamlin shrugs. “But it’s not like any daemati would target you.” He is lackadaisical and inattentive, paddling around the pond like a slippery otter. The mere word “daemati” was enough to alter Feyre’s mood, but Tamlin is barely affected.

“She’s been spending time with two sons of High Lords,” Rhys points out, flicking some water into Tamlin’s face. “I’d say that makes her plenty vulnerable. You should learn to shield, too.”

Tamlin nods, finally starting to take it seriously. “You were taught?” He propels himself upright, staring intently at Rhys. It is not hard to see how Tamlin esteems their older friend. Anyone who spends five minutes with the two of them can see how Tamlin might look at Rhys for approval, how he weighs Rhys’s words and commits them to memory. Sometimes, Feyre worries about how reliant Tamlin is, how he has replaced his own older brothers with the Heir to the Night Court. But she hardly has room to talk.

“Almost as soon as I could grasp the concept,” Rhys says. “I’ll give both of you lessons. It’ll be hard to test without an actual daemati, but it’s worth trying.”

You’ll have a bit of an advantage over Tamlin. Feyre gasps as Rhys’s voice echoes in her head. Her limbs freeze. She sinks a little in the water before propelling herself back up, sputtering.

Tamlin glides closer. “Feyre?”

“I’m fine,” she assures him, pointedly not looking at Rhys. “I thought something brushed my leg. What lives in this water anyway?”

“Nothing natural,” Tamlin scowls at the opaque surface as if his ire can be translated to whatever dwells below. “Come on, let’s leave before we find out.”

Feyre wades out of the pond, chemise sticking to her skin and hair dripping down her back. She squeezes her hair to dry it as best she can, then moves to gather a fistful of her chemise and wring out the water.

It’s silent for a moment. When Feyre looks up, she sees two males looking at her instead of getting out of the pond.

Emboldened by their attention, Feyre raises an eyebrow. “Yes?”

Tamlin coughs, looking away and stepping out of the water. He passes her without a comment, even as Rhys continues to look. Her challenge is answered as his eyes rove over her body, from long bare legs to the wet material clinging to her hips and chest. She half expects something flirty to spill from his mouth, but he just keeps the smirk on, looks his fill, and emerges from the water.

It takes a lot of effort not to pay him back in kind, though Feyre does sneak a look at those tattoos and well-muscled chest.

The light breeze chills their damp skin, and the once sweltering heat becomes a comforting embrace. The trio sprawl out. Between bouts of dozing off, they have a contest to see which pair is best at tossing grapes into someone’s mouth. When Feyre’s hair is mostly dry and her fingers get caught in tangles, Rhys slips behind her and braids it back.

She is half awake as his fingers comb through her hair, catching every other word of his explanation that his little sister has now grown old enough to demand all sorts of hairstyles and pampering from her devoted older brother. Feyre hums with a smile, picturing the scene.

There’s a knock on the edge of her mind. One she is better prepared for this time. Rhys slips a memory into her mind, one that is not hers, but his. Through his eyes he sees a head of black hair, a young girl’s bedroom, a reflection of him and a little girl, the former wrestling with a hair brush and the latter rifling through a basket of ribbons. There is a love infused in that memory, a feeling so pure that it nearly brings a tear to Feyre’s eye.

I almost neglected my promise earlier. Rhys’s voice is low and smoky in her mind. A moment later, a different memory. Her grinning face, covered in droplets of starlight.

There is emotion in this memory too, though not the all-consuming devotion Rhys feels for his sister. But it is something, and it makes Feyre smile anyway.

It is the perfect day. Feyre is not naive enough to think that this dynamic, with her two dear friends, can last forever. Rhysand will one day become High Lord, and Tamlin’s own role will likely change when his father passes. But fae are immortal, and she is untouched by death, and the thought of painful change is so far away in that perfect summer afternoon.

She cannot be blamed for thinking peace will last for a good, long while.

Being the Lady of the Spring Court is good for little else besides ordering the servants around the house.

Alis can grumble and protest and toss every veiled hint that she can think of, but in the end she cannot prevent Feyre from leaving her bed. Sleep came and went in the night. When the discomfort impeded her peace, Feyre tossed back healing tonics and pain remedies and whatever cocktail of drugs that the healer left on her nightstand.

Her smaller cuts are healed, but her ribs are still tender. The worst bruises are black and blue and impossible to look at. Feyre chooses a boring corner of the room to stare at as Alis dresses her in light fabrics and a dress that laces loosely. Alis picks a gown in an opaque green with a yellow underskirt, as if that will lend color to her pale skin or brighten her gaunt face.

Feyre tells the staff that she and the High Lord will not be entertaining any guests and to send away anyone that might drop by. Not that anyone comes for Feyre unless she specifically invites them.

The only other person in her home besides the servants is Lucien. He clearly did not expect her to leave bed and nearly leaps from his seat when she slips into the dining room. “You should be resting.”

She probably should. There is an exhaustion that has settled in her, infused in her bones and powdered on her skin. Her tongue is weighed down. Feyre has no words for her friend, only enough energy to squeeze his shoulder as she walks past to take her seat. She sees the way his eyes scan her, the way his jaw clenches when he notes how she sits gingerly.

Tamlin’s chair at the head of the table is empty. The space feels like a chasm.

When Tamlin is home, the table usually is weighed down with food. Today, Lucien just has one plate sent up from the kitchen. Feyre gets the same toast, fried eggs, and sausage. No platters of sliced fruit or tureens of gravy or plates of sugary pastries. Lucien pours her a cup of tea wordlessly.

Feyre eats in peace, but Lucien has a stack of papers by him that he leafs through in between bites. With Tamlin gone, his work will be all the more difficult. Lucien cannot make certain decisions, cannot sign off on projects, cannot approve a budget. But there are some things that must get done and emergencies to deal with.

“Anything I can help with?” Feyre speaks her first words of the day.

Lucien’s eyes flick up briefly. “I’ll let you know.” He’s gone a few minutes later, only a squeeze of her shoulder as a goodbye.

There are things Feyre can do, even some things that Tamlin might expect her to accomplish. Ferye thinks of the piles of letters she can respond to and the parties she might plan. The next holiday is never more than a few months away, and Tamlin likes to take any opportunity to celebrate and fill their home with his friends.

She does not do any of that.

The servants push back on some of Feyre’s whims, but they can never outright refuse her. A few months ago, it was a battle to get them to relinquish their gardening tools. Another battle to ask one of the gardeners to teach her, show her, and not do anything beyond that.

But a few months ago she was also a bit more fragile, and so they followed her directions with less protesting than she usually was in for.

Now, Feyre knows where to find the tools she needs. She slips on the gardening gloves that Alis procured and forced on her. While it might be seemly for the Lady of Spring to prune a few roses, cuts and calluses were utterly unacceptable. Feyre can stroll in the gardens, can even kneel in the grass, as long as she has a wide-brimmed hat to shield the delicate skin on her face.

How she longs to rip off the hat, unpin her hair, and sprint through the fields once more.

No one disturbs her as Feyre weaves through the perfectly manicured gardens. She passes tall hedges, venturing deeper until she crosses into a little hidden nook. It is cordoned off by nothing more than a charming wooden gate, but symbolism is strong. No one has ever entered without the express permission of the Lady of Spring.

Feyre let the little space go unattended for years, not caring much for gardening or pretty flowers. Now, the hidden nook is ringed with blooming jasmine. She might add a stone bench in the middle, but for now she is happy to sit on the grass.

A proper gardener might prune and use sophisticated techniques to care for the jasmine, but Feyre likes to see it grow wild. She removes weeds and brushes away dead leaves. In Spring the bushes are almost always flowering, clogging the space with their intoxicating scent. She would have kept blooms in her room, if not for what they symbolized.

Jasmine is a Night Court flower.

Tamlin does not come to her jasmine garden. He either does not know or was informed and has not confronted her directly. Now that she is in the garden, Feyre wonders if this is, in part, what set him off.

The flowers are not for Rhys. Not really. True, they remind her of him, in a way. But she mostly likes the scent, likes that when she smells it she immediately feels at peace. Jasmine is not the most beautiful flower in the world, but it is still pretty. A flower alone cannot make her happy, but it settles something in her soul anyway.

White jasmine is crisp and clean. Pure.

For a while, Feyre had no closure after the loss of her child. These things happened, so the healer ensured she was physically healthy and then sent away. There was no goodbye, no body, no ceremony to send the child off. They were there one moment and gone the next, not having made any mark on the world besides a scar on Feyre’s heart. She does not know if they were male or female, if they had Tamlin’s blond hair or her own darker shade, if they would have had freckles or their father’s straight nose. After they were gone, the child seemed to exist for Feyre and no one else.

So she planted the jasmine.

Now, as she lays on her back in the grass, she can imagine it. A giggling toddler, running circles around her. But not here, not in Spring. The flowers perfume the air and make it all too easy to pretend she’s in another place.

Maybe the jasmine is selfish. Maybe Feyre did have another motive in creating this secret space.

While she is here, she can mourn her child. While she is here, she can pretend that she is someplace else.

Here There Be One (1) Dragon - James Bond - 00Q

Prompted by @shireya, shifter!verse, where everyone has an animal form but Bond, in addition to being able to turn into a cat, can also turn into a dragon. "What happens when Q suddenly finds out about his boyfriend’s secret shape?” I’m afraid I wasn’t able to fit everything in here, but I hope this is okay! Thank you for the prompt!

Imagine being Q.

Imagine thinking your boyfriend is a perfectly ordinary cat shifter, only to find out that he can also turn into a dragon.

Imagine locking yourself in your office until Bond Stops Doing That.

Maybe we should back up a sec.

So Bond and Q have been dating a while. Almost a year.

Bond’s second form is common knowledge (not all the double-oh’s are as free with their second form, but since this is Mr. Cover-Names-Are-For-Nerds, no one is really surprised). He’s basically just a housecat. Fairly ordinary-looking, pretty blue eyes.

It’s really pretty useful, because cats are kind of everywhere, and even if the bad guys do know Bond is a cat, it’s not like they can just go grabbing every cat they see, that’d be impractical.

(Also, cats are hard to catch.)

Q second form is a barn owl. Bond likes to make jokes about how cats eat birds, while Q reminds Bond that his wingspan is longer than Bond’s entire body in shifted form.

Bond is undeterred.

Anyway, they’ve been dating for a year or so when Bond tells Q there’s something he wants to show him. Something he wants Q to know.

Sounds ominous, but okay.

Q prepares himself or all manner of reveals, running through the likelier scenarios before his imagination takes over. He’s so wrapped up in telling himself that no, Bond is not going to reveal that he’s secretly royalty in some other country, that he almost doesn’t register that Bond has turned into a dragon.

Q blinks, but no, there’s definitely a dragon in their living room.

It’s about the size of an exceptionally large dog, it has silvery-grey scales, it has wings, but the eyes – the eyes are the exact shade of Bond’s, and are nearly identical to those of his cat form.

It’s Bond.

But it can’t be Bond, nor can it be a dragon, because there are no more dragons.

Dragons died out ages ago. Nobody can shift into a dragon.

Except apparently Bond can.

Q has trouble reconciling this information, and really only manages to express this difficulty to Bond by pointing a finger at him, saying very calmly, “no”, and retreating to his office, where he intends to stay until either Bond takes a more reasonable form or Q acclimates to the information that there are still dragons.

Bond eventually does get into Q’s office, where Q has shifted and is perched on the back of his office chair; it’s a more comfortable way to process.

He ruffles and flaps a little at Bond, but eventually consents to allowing Bond to gently stroke the feathers down his back (with decidedly human hands, because Bond may be a bastard who loves startling Q, but he’s not enough of a bastard to keep the form that’s distressing Q while trying to comfort him).

Bond explains that dragons are very, very rare, and must be kept a secret; the files on his second (third?) form are buried so deep that Q would have had to have been looking for them specifically in order to find them (which Q intends to do later, and they both know it).

He does not apologize for springing it on Q in the most alarming manner possible because, as previously mentioned, he is a bastard who loves to startle Q, but he does point out that now that Q knows, it means they can fly together.

And Q does love flying…

(Real flying, not airplane flying. Fuck airplanes and their fake, terrifying form of flight, wings are the only way to go.)

Since Q was really planning on keeping Bond around anyway, he supposes he’ll just have to get used to this dragon business.

(Although it figures, Q thinks to himself, flexing his talons irritably, that Bond has a built-in way to start fires. It just fucking figures.)

This is the result of me being a slut for demon AUs, and also for Slash’s ridiculously pretty face. I wasn’t planning to write this 'cause uh it’s definitely got similarities to some of my other ideas and also because I’m not really satisfied with the characterization, but it wouldn’t leave me alone so here it is:

Summary: Slash is a pretty lil incubus who escapes from Hell. He gets roughed up a little on the way out, and Duff finds him lost and hurt on the street in LA. He helps Slash, takes him home, cleans him up, and hears him out. Duff lets Slash stay the night, and he can already tell that he’s going to let Slash stay as long as he wants. Slash latches on to Duff immediately, he’s convinced that Duff is the kindest, most beautiful being that could possibly exist and he absolutely adores him. Duff is crushing hard on Slash, but he can’t fathom why Slash likes him so much, he’s not pretty or exceptional while Slash is stunningly, inhumanly gorgeous. But Duff is compassionate as hell, and he does his best to ease Slash into life in the mortal plane.

Duff finds Slash on his way home from work on a Friday night, Slash looks completely lost and he’s bleeding a little and he’s not completely dressed. Everyone else is avoiding him in case he’s tripping or crazy or something, but Duff goes up to him cause he seems to be dressed like a rocker (no shirt or shoes, just tight leather pants and some jewelry) so like, solidarity from one wasted rocker to another.

Duff goes up to him, notices that he’s like, insanely hot but decides not to say anything about it, and asks if he’s lost or something. Slash shies away and eyes him suspiciously, he’s not used to people freely offering help. But then something comes running at them from down the street, at first Duff thinks it’s a dog but as it gets closer it’s obviously not a dog, not any kind of animal he recognizes, so he kicks it as hard as he can into a wall and it vanishes on impact in a puff of sour smelling smoke. That’s fucking weird so Duff looks around to see if anyone else saw that, but the people around them don’t seem to notice anything unusual. Instead, Duff spots a pack of four more creatures coming towards them. Slash sees them too, and he changes his mind about trusting Duff – he looks up at him and tugs on his arm, “Please help me!”

So Duff basically scoops Slash up (he’s way too skinny) and sprints for his car around the block. He throws Slash in the passenger seat and guns it. “What the fuck are those things?!” (classic action movie line). Slash explains that they’re hellhounds, vermin of the underworld, they followed him here. There’s a lot to unpack there, but Duff starts with the most important question: “Are they going to keep coming after us?” “Well, they can’t pass between planes on their own, so either we lose them or we get rid of them.” “How do we get – Oh shit!” The hellhounds are suddenly right in front of the car, half a block away. “Just hit them! They’ll re-spawn in Hell and they won’t be able to get back!” So Duff braces himself and drives straight through the pack, they disintegrate just like the first one did.

“Holy fucking shit. Was that all of them?” Slash affirms, and Duff pulls off the road next to a sketchy little park that’s mostly empty at this time in the evening. He and Slash get out of the car, and Duff is on the verge of panic, nearly yelling as he questions Slash about what the fuck just happened. He stops dead when he realizes that Slash looks scared (all big eyes and quivering pout and hugging himself defensively and damn if it doesn’t yank Duff’s heartstrings more than any sad puppy ever has), and immediately backtracks, apologizing and asking more gently for Slash to explain what happened.

So Slash does, he introduces himself and explains that the hounds won’t come back, they followed him here when he escaped from Hell. Slash is a demon and they spend a few minutes establishing this fact (he probably proves it by demonstrating that he can shapeshift). Duff asks if there’s a chance that more will come after him, Slash says he doubts it, he’s a little embarrassed as he admits he’s just an incubus, there’s a million others like him, no one will come looking now that he’s gone. Duff has a hard time imaging that anyone else like Slash exists in the world. He asks why Slash escaped and Slash explains that Hell is the worst, he just gets kicked around by more powerful demons (who treat low-level incubi like funny little pets because they’re not very powerful and they look mostly like humans instead of like terrifying demons) and sent off to seduce humans (he’s sick of it: shifting into their ideal, tempting them with whatever sick fantasies they have and then basically drugging them with his demonic power of irresistibility; it’s all-around terrible sex really, they act like they’re in a trance and he doesn’t get any say in what they do). It occurs to Duff eventually that Slash is basically telling him he had a demon pimp.

“So... you’re not going to try to steal my soul or something?” “I don’t make deals, just tempt people. And I don’t want to do that anymore, I don’t… I don’t really like hurting people.” He whispers the last bit like it’s some terrible secret. “It’s so violent in Hell, I just want to be left alone…"

“What are you going to do now that you’re on Earth?” Duff asks. He knows where he’s going with this, and he knows it’s a bad idea – inviting a demon into his own home?? It’s a recipe for disaster, but Slash seems so sincere and Duff rationalizes that he should be fine as long as he doesn’t ask for or agree to any sex. Easier said than done, because Slash is the most stunning being that Duff has ever encountered in his life and just being around him scrambles his mind a little.

But Slash looks so lost and uncertain when he admits that he doesn’t know much about the mortal plane and he has nowhere to go, and he lights up with a combination of relief and genuine shock and awe when Duff offers to take him home with him.

So they get back in the car and drive home, where Duff runs Slash a bath, helps clean up the blood and soot (sure, Slash could probably handle it himself but Duff is firmly in mother hen mode), gives him some comfortable clothes to wear (seeing Slash wearing his softest t-shirt and a pair of tiny shorts is almost too much for Duff) and something warm to eat (as an immortal demon, Slash has never eaten real food before and frankly it’s life-changing – this tastes so much better than dick. He might cry. Duff now understands why he’s so thin).

When it’s time to go to bed, Slash is uncertain. He’s been in people’s beds before, though he’s never actually slept in one. In Hell he had a little place to sleep but nothing like the homes that humans have. Duff offers Slash the options of the bed and the couch. Slash cautiously clarifies that Duff doesn’t want to have sex with him? “Oh no, I couldn’t.” Slash looks confused and a little uncomfortable. “I mean, of course I think you’re attractive, shit you’re the most beautiful – Uh, but you said earlier that you didn’t want to do that anymore, I would never ask you to. I didn’t offer to help because I wanted something in return.”

Slash stares at him. “Duff, you must have the kindest soul in this realm.” Duff tries to deflect (of course he doesn’t have the kindest soul that’s ridiculous, all he did was offer a little help, anyone could have), but Slash just looks at him affectionately. “And the prettiest face. I might be done with seduction, but with you, I wouldn’t mind.” Duff can’t even comprehend that Slash of all people could find him beautiful with his scars and his terrible dye job and all the other things he’s secretly insecure about. Instead he focuses on the last thing Slash said, “I wouldn’t mind” isn’t exactly an enthusiastic come on so Duff will stand by his vow not to fuck Slash.

Duff helps Slash make a little nest of blankets on the couch and then they both go to bed. In the morning, Duff wakes up first, so he tries to very quietly put together breakfast without waking Slash in the tiny apartment. They spend the rest of the weekend trying to acclimate Slash to living with mortals – it’s quite a learning curve. Slash needs lots of help with things, but Duff doesn’t mind at all, and by the time Monday comes around, he feels confident that Slash can mind himself in the apartment for a while when Duff is at work. Slash is very impressed that Duff has a job and earns money, but he’s also a little nervous to be alone – he wakes up early to send Duff off with a hug and a kiss on the cheek, and Duff is entirely distracted through his whole shift.

When Duff gets home, Slash announces that he missed him, then starts excitedly telling Duff about his day: It was so quiet, he’s never experienced that before! There were animals on the TV for a while before it changed to people talking about things! He looked out the window for two hours and at one point he saw a man drop his sandwich across the street and it reminded him of Hell!

Over the course of that week, Slash has no trouble keeping himself entertained when Duff is out. He systematically attacks Duff’s music collection, takes up guitar, starts writing down notes about humanity in a little notebook (Duff finds it open one day, and reads a couple hilariously endearing entries). He also discovers porn, and is immediately obsessed with it. So many ways to have sex, and he gets to choose what to watch or look at whenever he wants! Duff soon learns that Slash has very diverse and somewhat unusual tastes in erotica.

But when Duff comes home, all of Slash’s attention is on him. He loves to tell Duff about his day, and is completely engrossed in whatever Duff has to say in return. He continues to candidly compliment Duff, usually something along the lines of being extremely kind and intelligent and beautiful, and Duff continues to deflect cover up his insecurity. Slash is completely open about his adoration of Duff, but Duff can’t even begin to accept it, so he just pretends it doesn’t exist. Meanwhile Duff is at least a bit in love with Slash but still convinced that he’s not ever going to do anything about it.

Eventually, Duff’s friends are wondering why they haven’t seem him for almost a week. Duff brings Slash along to the bar and introduces him to Axl, Izzy, and Steven. The guys all give Duff a look when they meet Slash – How did one of us ever manage to land someone like that? Slash gets along well with Duff’s friends; he’s still working on the whole acting-like-a-human thing and they can tell when his behavior is a little off, but they trust Duff’s judgement so they try to be welcoming.

Duff, however, is not having a good time. Sure, it’s nice to see Slash doing so well, but all of the insecurities he’s been repressing over the past week are resurfacing all at once. Just standing next to Slash in public is stressing him out, he can’t stop imagining that everyone around them is judging him, thinking that Slash is way out of his league. He’s certain he wouldn’t mind so much if he wasn’t so helplessly gone for Slash – now he’s also worried that Slash will realize that there’s plenty of people in the world who are way better than Duff.

Duff excuses himself to the restroom, and a minute later Axl follows and corners him by the sinks. “Where the everliving fuck did you find this kid? And why the fuck are you just sitting there like a stiff corpse when he’s all over you??” Axl has always been a confidant for him, so Duff starts to explain how he’s been feeling over the past week, leaving out the bit about demons and hellhounds. “Duff, you dumb fuck, it’s obvious to anyone with two working brain cells that Slash thinks you’re God. Enough of this you-don’t-deserve-it bullshit, just make your move!"

They return to the table, where the rest have paid off their tabs and gotten ready to move on to the next bar of the night. “Sorry for keeping you waiting,” Duff says, ostensibly to the group but mostly to Slash. Then, with his heart pounding and palms sweating, he leans in to give Slash a completely casual peck on the cheek.

Slash lights up like the sun and immediately latches on to Duff’s arm and leans his head on his shoulder. He doesn’t let go for even a second as they hit the next bar, and the one after that, and then finally head home and curl up together on the couch.

While at the Care Center, Spike has been an active participant in ACC's BouroughBreak program. On one occasion, Spike went to Central Park, on another occasion, he went to Randall's Island. He went on a hike, played with toys and saw horses. His handlers described him as 'popular', 'adventurous', and 'playful'. However, in shelter, Spike's level of stress and frustration has been displayed through reactivity towards other dogs and on one occasion was observed to redirect onto the handler, mouthing the handler's wrist and arm. Spike has not displayed any on leash reactivity towards other animals outside of being moved throughout the kennels in the care center. 6/22: Spike was being fitted for a harness to go on a Borough Break when he grabbed the handlers forearm in his mouth and would not let go. The handlers offered toys and treats but he would not release until an auditory interrupter was used. Significant bruising and red marks were left on the arm. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: NEW HOPE ONLY Behavior Asilomar H - Healthy Recommendations: No young children (under 5) Single-pet home Recommend no dog parks Recommendations comments: Single pet/no dog parks: See DOG-DOG. No young children: Due to being mouthy in his previous home, we recommend a home without young children. When overstimulated, Spike quickly escalates to jumping up high repeatedly towards handlers, mouthing hard (see "in-shelter observations") and is unable to readily recover therefore we advise safe and appropriate management. Due to the intensity of the behaviors observed, we feel that Spike may be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can assess his behavior after decompression/acclimation in a new home environment before permanent placement. Force-free, reward-based training only is advised. Potential challenges: Basic manners/poor impulse control Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Low threshold for arousal Potential challenges comments: Spike is reported to be active and jumpy with people, in a playful manner. It’s time to start preparing Fluffy and Fido for post-pandemic life

It might seem too soon to think about preparing pets for the time humans will return to offices and schools. After all, a coronavirus vaccine isn’t expected to be widely available until spring at the earliest, which means that most Americans who were sent home to work or study remotely will remain there for at least several more months.

But according to animal expert Zazie Todd, author of “Wag: The Science of Making Your Dog Happy,” the eventual separation will be easier for pets “if you make changes gradually, starting potentially a long time beforehand.” So, in the spirit of doing what’s best for four-legged family members, we asked several experts how to prepare our pets and, let’s face it, ourselves to spend weekdays without one another’s company.

In addition to Todd, we spoke with Clive Wynne, psychology professor and director of the Canine Science Collaboratory at Arizona State University and the author of “Dog Is Love: Why and How Your Dog Loves You,” and Monique Udell, an associate professor in the Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences at Oregon State University who has done research on cats and dogs. We also emailed with Alexandra Horowitz, who runs the Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College and whose most recent book is “Our Dogs, Ourselves.” Here are their answers to some common questions.

Will my pets be okay when our house is suddenly empty during the day?

“The good news,” Todd said, “is that probably they will be okay for things to go back.” But if you’ve been with your pet 24/7 and are suddenly going to be gone for a large chunk of each weekday, she added, “that’s a huge change” that should be introduced gradually. Dogs and cats relish routine, Todd said. “They would prefer to get their meals at the same time every day. And your dog would rather go for walks at the same time every day.”

Wynne agreed that pets are adaptable but warned that they do have their limits. Owners should be careful: “not to push them beyond the range of what a dog, an animal, can be expected to tolerate.”

Wynne said your pet will let you know if you’ve crossed that line. “In each of these things, it’s about taking small steps and watching your animal to see that your animal is comfortable before pushing any further, and always trying to stop the process while everybody is still relaxed and comfortable.”

If you’re a cat owner who thinks none of this applies to you, think again. “I would say that cats may often actually have a stronger emotional or behavioral response to change than dogs,” Udell said, though we might not notice those reactions. Although we often think of dogs as the more social pets, Udell said, “cats can be very social, and they can engage in a lot of deep social interactions with people, whether that be petting and cuddling or play.”

What steps should I take to gradually prepare my pets for this change?

The experts advised establishing a routine that’s close to the one you will keep when life goes back to “normal.” Think about when you wake up and go to bed, when you feed them — even, Udell said, the temperature of your house and the light-dark cycle. Then, gradually include some alone time for your pets. That might be tough if you’re in an area where you’re supposed to be sticking close

to home, Todd acknowledged. “In a worst-case scenario, it might be going and sitting in your car or going for a walk for half an hour, just so that your pet gets some time on their own,” she said.

[Dogs, too, can find the pandemic disorienting]

You might have to break some habits. Walking your dog more than usual? Consider whether your pet really needs those extra walks, Horowitz said; if so, make accommodations for your dog to get them when you’re back at work. Enjoy taking the dog with you when you run a quick errand? Consider leaving your pet at home. “I love taking my dog along with me on those rare occasions when I go out,” Wynne said. But “it would be better for the dog to be reminded that I may go away, and I may go away at unpredictable times for unpredictable lengths of time, but that the world continues to be stable, and I will always come back.”

If you’ve been paying more attention to your cat because you’ve been home, you shouldn’t suddenly eliminate that engagement when you go back to work, Udell said. Instead, she suggested, start shifting those interactions to times of the day when you’ll be available post-pandemic.

And keep in mind that your pet might not be as devastated as you fear. Wynne noted that although pets enjoy interacting with people, they also need to sleep about 12 or 14 hours a day. “So if a dog has been in such a busy household that it’s overstimulated,” he said, “it’s probably just going to be grateful to get a bit more sleep.”

What about pets purchased or adopted during the pandemic? This is all they know.

“We don’t know for certain, but most likely they will have a harder time, because they haven’t experienced those routines before,” Todd said. That means you need to expose them to being alone even more gradually than the pets you owned before the pandemic, she said. “Don’t just go out for a two-hour walk and leave them home alone when they’ve never been left home alone before.”

[I hated dogs, but I hated the pandemic more. Would a puppy help?]

“Start with pointless walks around the block without your dog — just 10 minutes,” Wynne suggested. “And make sure every day you take a pointless 10-minute stroll without the dog, perverse as that will feel, and let the dog get used to this.” Then start building up the length of time you leave the dog alone.

Both Todd and Udell counseled that the once-common advice to ignore your pet when leaving or returning is out of date. Making a fuss over your dog or cat upon your return does not cause separation anxiety, Todd said. “What your animal needs,” Udell said, “is for you to be accurately responsive to their needs.”

As for pandemic kittens, Udell wasn’t convinced that they will have a harder time adjusting, because they’ve had such intensive socialization. “Meeting those needs early in that relationship and being very available and present might actually help develop a more resilient cat that does better in your absence,” she said. How new pets will react is a “giant social question that we’re all going to be experiencing at the same time,” she added. “But I’m hoping for the positive outcome.”

What if my pet barks, urinates or chews things when I’m gone?

“If the animal shows signs of distress, like, you know, peeing inappropriately and crying or barking uncontrollably, then I would take a step back, and I would reduce the intensity of what you’re trying to do,” Wynne said. “If your dog is so distressed, even by you going out for 10 minutes, just go out the door, count to 10 and come back in. And once that works, go out the door and count to 20 and come back in. Baby steps.”

Horowitz suggested ensuring that dogs get their exercise before you leave. “This could include some long play bouts, not just walks. And give them something to do when you’re gone. ‘Chewing’ happens because they don’t have anything interesting (and permissible) to chew on.”

And if I try these suggestions and the behavior continues?

“If your dog or cat is soiling while you’re out, it is not necessarily separation anxiety; it could be a medical issue,” Todd said. “So, it is important to get them checked at the vet,” because there are other issues that will need to be ruled out, too, including boredom. “If a vet diagnoses a separation anxiety, very often they will want to prescribe medications for the pet, which will help alongside any behavioral treatments that you want to do.” Treatment for separation anxiety can take a long time, she said.

Wynne noted that although there are plenty of people out there offering their services as pet behaviorists or animal trainers, there’s no licensing, as with a vet or a human psychologist. “Anybody who’s watched a TV show can claim to be an animal trainer, an animal behaviorist.” That means doing your due diligence to ensure the person is certified through a respected organization, such as the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.

Is getting my pet a companion pet a good idea?

“This depends on the animal. Some are very attached to their people; others get a lot of pleasure from” other members of their species, Horowitz said. “So, you have to know your animal.”

Todd and Udell cautioned, however, against thinking that a companion pet will cure your pet’s separation anxiety. Research is showing “that the other animal may play a role, but it’s likely not the same role as the owner,” Udell said. “And so, it’s not a replacement.”

Whether one pet will welcome a second depends on your pet’s nature and its age, as well as the age and species of the companion. “Many dogs will get on with another dog in the home, more so than cats,” Todd said. But “for both dogs and cats, it depends a lot on the early experiences they had” and whether they were socialized to get along with other animals. “Once an animal is adult, it can be very difficult to get an animal to accept a member of a new species as a friend, as a companion,” Wynne noted.

If you are considering a second pet, Horowitz said, have the pets meet each other, and find out everything you can about the new animal. “Also be sure that you have the time to acclimate the new animal to your home” before resuming pre-pandemic life. If you are unsure how your pet will react to another animal in the household, Todd suggested looking for a shelter that offers a foster-to-adopt program, so you can return the dog or cat if it doesn’t work out.

My pandemic pet has never had to deal with strangers in the house. How do I prepare them?

“Some dogs will actually be fine with that,” Todd said, “and for some dogs, that will be a much more difficult transition.” A good strategy is to designate a space — a mat, crate or room — that they can retreat to if they don’t want to interact with a visitor or that you can send them to for calming down if they react too excitedly. Get them used to the space before anyone starts to visit.

(In fact, Todd said, “it’s always a good idea to have a safe space where your dog or cat can go if they want some quiet time to just chill out and relax.” When your pet seeks out that spot, you should let them stay there, and teach your children not to disturb the pet when it’s in there.)

When you think it’s safe — pandemic-wise — you can ask a friend to practice coming into the house multiple times. Give your dog a treat when it behaves, Todd said. (Don’t have the friend give the treat; you don’t want a nervous dog to have to approach a stranger.)

If your dog is too sensitive for practice entries, “then you might need to waste some time talking on the threshold until the dog could get used to that,” Wynne said.

If you simply cannot take the introduction of new people or your gradual absences slowly enough, and your dog is “overwhelmed by any departure you might make or by any introduction of new people, no matter how briefly you’re away or no matter what distance you keep the person who comes to your door,” Wynne said, it might be time to consider consulting a vet about medication.

[How are dogs coping during the pandemic?]

As noted above, cats who are exposed to different types of animals early in life tend to be more accepting of them. The same goes for people. So a cat who has been living alone with one person during the pandemic, Udell said, “may or may not have the skills to interact in a comfortable way with somebody who does not fit into that mold.”

How can I get over my guilt and sadness about leaving them?

“I think it’s only natural to feel a bit sad,” Todd said, pointing out that Americans increasingly think of dogs and cats not as pets but as family members.

Rather than feeling guilty, Horowitz said, make sure your pet has some companionship. “Maybe you can bring your pet, under some circumstances, to work. Find a dog walker or community doggy day care you like and trust. If you can, go home in the middle of the day. And when you’re home, spend quality time with them.”

Wynne, however, isn’t convinced that guilt is entirely without merit. In general, he thinks we Americans expect our dogs “to put up with being on their own for longer than is conscionable.” Although he doesn’t necessarily advocate adopting the Swedish law that says that dogs can’t be left alone at home for more than six hours at a stretch, “it’s a good rule to live by.” There are ways of working around it, such as hiring a dog walker or getting a companion pet, he noted. But dogs have highly social and loving natures, and “it’s just not fair, not reasonable, to ask them to cope” with our long absences.

Both he and Todd said they hoped the general success of the country’s forced experiment with remote work will encourage employers to continue offering it as an option. “I hope that more people, after the pandemic is over, will at least have the option of working at home some of the time, some days of the week,” Wynne said. “That could be a silver lining to come out of the miserable times that we’re in. ”

The Kingdom of Thornvale: Rebuilding Haven

The month of Rova, 4711

Early in the month of Rova, after meeting with the People's council and discussing among themselves, the Lords of Thornvale issue two decrees: First, that all available resources be put towards rebuilding portions of Haven that were damaged or destroyed in the recent owlbear attack, and Second, that the kingdom should expand westward, towards a site of quality stone to be used as building material.

Once issued, the Lords set off to their own devices. Evrin spends the majority of the month taking a census of the folks around Haven, gathering details about them. A brief visit to the Sootscale Kobolds by Evrin to inquire about the so-called Ironskin Kobolds uncovers some information. Though not intimately knowledgeable about the Ironskins, Chief Sootscale indicates they live somewhere in the mountains southeast of Haven, and for some bizarre reason, many have wings. The Sootscales are not particularly on good terms with the Ironskins, mostly due to their obsession with and worship of Dahak, but the distance between the two tribes has thus far kept them from open conflict.

Saryn dedicates the month to acclimating the owlbear cub and the wyvern hatchling to the people of Haven ( and visa versa!). By months-end, the townsfolk have grown used to the Lord and his menagerie. The owlbear cub too, has become comfortable with his new master and all the humans. The wyvern hatchling, however, has found a near-permanent roost upon Saryn's shoulder.

A watchful eye around town reveals that very few of the towns immediate residents seem particularly suited for hands-on care of the young creatures. However, a number of the more transient hunters and woodsmen that wander in and out of town seem like they might be strong candidates; a few have dogs or ferret companions; one in particular walks with a wolf.

Saryn’s nightly performances near Svetlana's grove under the summer night soothe tired muscles, and the commoners seem to enjoy the Lords being back in Haven after many months of far-ranging travel. Indeed, Saryn realizes that many faces are new to him, and that the little village of a few dozen has grown substantially.

Karis, too, spends time with his wyvern hatchling, and while it slowly begins to recognize the elf, there seems a distance between them - something holding them apart. The creature seems to regard the warlock with a cool skepticism, though it happily accepts food offered. A few attempts to "play" with toy animals results in their destruction, and once shredded and recognized as non-edible, the remains are quickly discarded.

Observing some of the citizens, Karis quickly identifies several individuals with qualities he is looking for: Tech'lahi, the elven huntress, certainly seems a patient and intelligent woodsman, and her refusal to 'settle' into Haven certainly seems to be in part some level of wanderlust. In addition he hears of Lady Arein Marie Garess’ recent departure from Haven to travel the lands of Thornvale, offering her aid where she can. Beyond that, there are many hunters and woodsfolk who wander in and out of Haven. They seem to perhaps 'fit the bill' for a refusal to be tied down. Their loyalty is largely unknown, but they may be useful from which to pull a number of individuals for 'grooming'. No obvious individuals with any skill as a alchemist or apothecary pass through Haven, however.

Nightly meditations by Karis to connect with his patron and uncover more information on the Taldan Crypt reveal nothing but a dark Kamelands sky with the lights of Haven in the distance. In fact, the pull of the raven Queen has never felt more distant, as if the warlock were being snubbed. His mediations often leave him feeling restless and tired rather than refreshed. These recent changes seem in some part related to the disappearance of the previously-ever-present raven companion.

Stonewalker takes a quick visit to the Old Lady Beldame, in the swamps south of Haven, and despite his best efforts, isn't able to garner much response from her. After acknowledging his initial greeting with a rough You again?, the strange woman shutters herself in her hut leaving nothing but the clattering sounds of some unknown activity to fill the air. Returning to Haven, the gnome meets Evrin to discuss on military affairs, engages with Arna in matters of the People's council, and begins work on the long-promised clock.

Arna, unsurprisingly, tackles her work with the tenacity of a dwarf. She throws herself with gusto into helping the town rebuild, and garners much appreciation and praise from the commonfolk for her efforts. By mid- month, most of the folk are taking direction from the dwarf on what to do, and there seems to be a growing support for stronger, stone-based construction of town structures.

By mid-month, with most of the hardest work complete, Arna leaves town with Hoff and Ardbeg, returning to town several days later with some strange plants, a sapling, and a number of slabs of fine granite. The trio set to working near Svetlana's Grove, carving grand relief images of the Lord Armauk in several memorable moments of his life. The stonework is quite amazing, as Arna's skill comes to life. Joined late in the month by Jhod and Justynia, the townsfolk gather for a commemoration ceremony of the new memorial. Jhod's blessings and prayers grace the memorial, turning a small coachwood sapling into a grand, majestic and mature tree, and tiny fangberry shrubs spring to full bloom, growing as much in mere minutes as they would in a year.

The following morning, the town is amazed to see standing beside the memorial, a fully grown Whitetail buck, nuzzling the carvings of the fallen priest. The creature paces proudly around the stone relief, vocalizing loudly with grunts and bleats. Then, just as suddenly, the deer ran for the city wall, leaping over the 15 foot tall palisade in a single bound, and darting off into the hills. The sign was undeniable. We are blessed by Old Deadeye, muttered the commonfolk, and for weeks thereafter one could find fresh flowers placed daily in respect at the memorial.

By the end of the month, Haven looks to be nearly fully restored, save for some patches of dirt not yet grown over by grass. The new sections of the palisade appear strong, Havenhall patched and restored to its original self, and many new cottages dot the area around town. In addition, small signs pop up around the popular destinations in town reading NEW TO THORNVALE? PLEASE CHECK IN WITH CEDRIN.

Also in the final week of the month, surveys return from east of town, claiming a job complete, and turning in their surveyor's maps. Haven seems bustling with energy, as fall harvests start rolling in.

He is decidedly not a Sootscale or Ironskin, but has been hiring adventurers from the local Guild Hall. He does not seem to be causing trouble, but is an oddity attracting some attention from the commoners.

Many of the womenfolk have taken to fishing in Candlemere as a means to replace the hunting gains from their deceased menfolk, and such a structure would help keep the village alive.

A missive from Corax Timber Co. reports sightings of a strange beast in the wood near the logging camp. Corax has stepped up patrols, but wanted to inquire if any similar sightings have been reported elsewhere in the wood.

DuckTales Season 3 Episode 9 Review: They Put a Moonlander on Earth!

This DUCKTALES review contains spoilers.

Every so often, from the moment a DuckTales episode begins, I have a gut feeling it’s going to be incredible. That it’s going to somehow reach beyond DuckTales‘ usual greatness. ‘They Put a Moonlander on Earth!’ gave me that feeling from its opening moments… yet somehow went even furthur than I could predicted. Its quality, ironically, was so high it hit the moon.

This episode is one of DuckTales’ best by far. Everything works about it. There’s so much going on but it never feels overstuffed. The jokes all land brilliantly, building on one another with expert precision. It balances nearly ten character arcs (small and large) throughout the episode and they all pay off masterfully. If anyone teaching a course about TV writing needs an example of perfect structure, this episode should be at the top of the watch list.

Penumbra, or Penny, is the center of this episode and she desperately wants to get back to the moon. She can’t stand being on Earth… unlike the rest of her people who’ve all quickly assimilated to human… Duck…. Whatever, life. (The gag with Dewey and Webby feeding Ducks made my brain short circuit so I’m glad the same happened to Penny as well.) What shakes her out of her moon focus is something so breathtakingly simple but still incredibly heartfelt. Her fellow Moonlanders didn’t invite her to a party.

THAT IS SO GOOD AND RELATEABLE. The fear of being left out will drive people to do anything and for Penny that means attempting to engage in Earth fun. She’s bad at it but that gives us a ton of amazing gags of her miserably failing at fun. The car bit was probably my favorite; Penny getting whacked in the face by a bird was pure gold.

All these jokes, in DuckTales fashion, lead to a powerful bit where Penny accidentally admits why she misses the moon. She was pretty much perfect there. She could protect her people. She understood how everything worked. Here on Earth, though? Things are different and she’s not the best anymore. She isn’t in control of everything. What is she without her identity from the moon? What’s her legacy? Ah, the theme of legacy. The overarching theme of DuckTales season 3. It’s been a part of much of the season but it’s at its most effective here. Penny is scared by the future, scared of her new surroundings and wants to retreat into the familiar. It’s understandable but Webby is there to comfort her.

I’m not saying every episode of DuckTales is made better when Webby is there but you know, she always helps. She tells Penny about how, when she lived in the mansion, she was Webby: Expert On All Things McDuck. When she left though the world was scary and different. She wanted to go back to what she knew but with the help of Huey, Dewey, and Louie she was able to become more than that one thing. She became World Explorer Webby and Best Friend Webby! Crucially though, she says she’s still Mansion Webby as well.

This whole scene is just… it made me tear up a little, no lie! It’s a perfect way to show kids (and adults!) that just because you’re known for or see yourself as one thing doesn’t mean you can only be that one thing. You can be so much more; you can break out of the familiar and try new things.

I love this reaches Penny but one brain freeze seems to undo it. Webby’s words are powerful but the brain freeze was the perfect representation of the challenges and fears we face even after we try to break out of the familiar. It can hurt as much as a brain freeze does but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.

In a masterful plot turn, Penny finally acclimates to “Earth Fun” by doing it in her own way. Playing carnival games isn’t exactly her style but roller-skating onto a crashing Ferris wheel to save Dewey and Webby? That’s her kind of fun! I adore that in this action Penny begins to adjust to Earth but doesn’t lose her desire to protect and help others. In this moment she’s Moon Penny and Earth Penny all at once.

We can’t talk about Penny in this episode without mentioning THAT line. When talking to Launchpad toward the end she says, “We are not enemies I just do not wish to date an Earth… male.” Combine that with the way Della was acting around her early in the episode PLUS writer/director/story boarder Sam King confirming it on Twitter? Folks, Penny is a lesbian!

First off, I LOVE IT! This is so good. Would I have liked for the show to say it out loud? Of course I would, but knowing this is a Disney animated series I can imagine the intense restrictions they’re under. Getting that line on screen is a victory and I appreciate King addressing that we won’t see much more of Penny this season. I appreciate that setting of expectations! But hey, Disney, let them say lesbian!

Penny’s plot made this episode next level but everything else was great to! Dewey’s desire to be involved in a Dewey Dew-saster was pitch perfect. You think his rivalry with Timmy Jenkins (love they always said his full name) is all in his head but then to get that twist at the end? Jaw dropping.

Launchpad’s imagined tension with Penny? So good! The best gag was him getting on the top of the car (WHILE IT’S MOVING!) and asking her if she’d rather one of the kids drive the car. We also now have the beautiful Launchpad and Penny friendship. More lesbians and straight guys being best friends! You love to see it!

And to top it all off there’s Glomgold! You can never go wrong with Glomgold. The fact he named his Ferris wheel “FLINT FERRIS GLOM WHEEL” is just genius. His back and forth with his new Moonlander pal he just can’t stay mad at gives us yet another DuckTales dynamic I desperately need more of. (When the biggest complaint I have about DuckTales is it has TOO MANY characters I want to see more of, that’s a good problem to have.)

Then there’s all the little details. Della being totally fine with Dewey putting his life in danger. Glomgold’s Ferris wheel model with macaroni. Penny calling Webby “Small Della.” The “Barrel of Monkeys” line. PENNY’S MUSIC MOTIF! Seriously, where can I get a clean recording of that? High quality FLC file. Vinyl, WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO, DISNEY?
