Ever wondered who the world's greatest footballer is? The Best FIFA Men's Player award tries to answer that question! Here's a quick look at the past winners:
2016 & 2017: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid and Portugal) - This superstar dominated the scene for two years in a row!
2018: Luka Modric (Real Madrid and Croatia) - Luka surprised everyone by taking home the trophy after an amazing World Cup performance.
2019: Lionel Messi (Barcelona and Argentina) - The legendary Messi finally claimed the FIFA award after several Ballon d'Or wins.
2020 & 2021: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich and Poland) - Lewandowski's incredible goal-scoring spree earned him back-to-back wins.
2022: Lionel Messi (Paris Saint-Germain and Argentina) - Messi, still going strong, reclaimed the title in 2022!
catching up with the guys i mentioned in my first u18 men's worlds post, now that the gold medal game is over and canada's won:
- gavin mckenna is undisputably the Next Big Thing. as an underage player, he ended the tournament 2nd in overall points and 1st in goal-scoring with 10 goals and 10 assists in 7 games. #mctankformckenna
- tij iginla can rip some pucks and i wish he were still a tbird. 6 goals and 6 assists in 7 games. check out this photo with his dad after the game (the flames have got to draft him, right?).
- kashawn aitcheson defended well, good in transition, according to scott wheeler. he ended the tournament with 1 goal (tied for second in goal-scoring for canadian defensemen) as well as 2 assists for a total of 3 points in 7 games.
he got a little buried in the net as the celebrations began:
- malcolm spence ended with the three goals from the preliminary rounds as well as 4 assists for a total of 7 points in 7 games.
here's spence handing off the trophy to mckenna, who handed it off to iginla next.
the usa probably deserved to win throughout most of that gold medal game, but hey, who can stop a mckenna hat trick?
tagging @glintglimmergleam and @avocado-moon with continuing Viscount's Men shenanigans
Edmund - "Let me speak to the yet unknowing world how these things came about" - Act 5, Scene 2
Horatio speaking to Fortinbras after everyone's dead; really moving but simple enough to tie it all in a bow.
Violet - "I have of late, but wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth" - Act 2, Scene 2
Hamlet explaining to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern why they've been sent for; he can see the beauty of the world, and the sky fretted with golden fire, but he's forgotten how to feel it.
Anthony - How All Occasions Do Inform Against Me - Act 4, Scene 4
Hamlet about to be sent away to England wishing he could be as decisive as Fortinbras, the kind of man his father wanted for a son.
Benedict - "Speak it as I pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue" - Act 3, Scene 2
Hamlet's speech to the actors before the play. Theater is magic, art is magic, we hold a mirror up to nature and learn ourselves as we do.
Colin - "Thoughts black, hands apt, drugs fit, and time agreeing" - Act 3 Scene 2
Lucianus the poisoner in murder of gonzago; mostly Colin likes the excuse to ham it up a little with purposefully bad acting.
Daphne - "There is a willow, grows aslant a brook" - Act 4, Scene 7
Gertrude telling Laertes how his sister died, and making a doubtful death into something that can be remembered for her beauty and innocence. Whether Gertrude saw Ophelia drown or was told about it later is the topic of Much Debate in the Bridgerton household.
Eloise - "Oh that this too, too solid flesh would melt"- Act 1, Scene 2
Hamlet finally alone after the formal court session from hell, where he's forbidden from going to university and he has to see a mother who loved his father so dearly, settle for less than she deserves.
Francesca - "O, my offense is rank, it smells to heaven!" - Act 3, Scene 3
Claudius in the chapel, trying desperately to pray, or trying desperately to believe that he can just get away with all this and it'll turn out fine, choking on his own sin. This speech goes hard and is most of the reason Frannie wanted the role.
Gregory - "Here is newly come to court Laertes, believe me, a most excellent gentleman" - Act 5, Scene 2
Not a speech, but Osric's part of the dialogue where he's inviting Hamlet to duel with Laertes, because there's a lot of potential for humor and innuendo.
Hyacinth - "A little ere the mightiest Caeser fell" - Act 1, Scene 1
Horatio after seeing the ghost, talking about how there's precedent. Hyacinth has been studying her roman history lately and was very excited to see this speech (usually cut from productions).
I have so many feelings but I know, in no universe does Messi deserve this award. He’s the best of all time or wtv. It I’ve never seen such a blatant robbery on international television
I was watching one of those tributes to Charlie episodes that John de Christopher put out. Jim Keltner was on it and talked about how Steve was amazed at how thick Charlie's sticks were (I know that sounds like a euphemism) and that he tried to use them for a few songs but he couldn't do it and he mentioned it to Jim. Jim said that when he shook hands with Charlie, Charlie's hands were bigger than Jim's and said that Charlie had "big soft hands" and that George Harrison was the same. Two "small dudes but they had big soft hands." And it made me feel all warm inside, this small elegant gentleman with big soft hands. Awww
For comparison, you can see the size of his hands against Shirley’s shoulder:
I have been daydreaming recently about getting five of my female friends + maybe my sister (if I can lure her out of her apartment) to play D&D with me. We could play monthly. I could brave running base 5e so people can play spellcasters. We could make the setting together via Ex Novo and/or the Session 0 System. Or, I SWEAR, I'll read and run Ghosts of Saltmarsh. Or... I could enlist them to help me figure out the starter box for The One Ring 2e which I think starts out with hobbit pregen PCs. It could be fun. Trouble is... I HAVE to wrap up AKB first. I have tried to run multiple campaigns at once and it is Too Much for me (not to mention I have other hobbies)! So. I have to sit on my hands until Spring anyway. Alas.
there’s something there though in my brain that again i can’t fully articulate right now bc i’m just sad about nicklas more than usual but the. uh. ghost isn’t quite right. and neither is hole, he hasn’t left a hole. maybe what i’m thinking and feeling is the concept of White Space in graphic design. the Absence that is its own presence; that brings into relief the elements around it. it’s like, all of this exists in relation to this space it’s surrounded by. does that make any sense at all. the team is there on the ice, in the room, on the plane, and he is not, and that in itself is how he is there
as a fan of another pl team i think your problem is that your captain is son. he's too emotional and soft and instead of demanding better of your players he goes around comforting them and protecting them from the refs. idk i feel like he's probably let the band get to his head a bit and now he's pushing people like PEH (who have proper authority) away from the refs, it's a bit weird. strange appointment. he's trying too hard
I will be honest i think marta could beat 90% of brazil male nt.
One might at first think I'm exaggerating but then think about it. "Oh how is she gonna beat....Marquinhos. I mean.... Richarlison. I MEAN *cheks list* HM. I see."
