I woke up to two anons today about my blog header- so welcome. I’ll answer this one first because it’s less fraught than the one asking about TB 😬-  So the header in question is --- “I love Malex... Michael Guerin-stan and Alex Manes-liker” -okay, it’s a joke I’m making? I just wrote 51K story that was basically all about how much I love Alex Manes even after some of the season 2 plot-twists, but previous to that was a 176K story about how much I wanted better for Alex after 1x13.

This blog header is more about the fandom and the polarization that sometimes happens in a ship - I have been kicking around this fandom since May of 2019, only active on tumblr since July of 2019,  so the amount character war “meta” posts that I’ve seen in the tags ... like I can’t even count them. I probably was more than a little guilty of reblogging them too. Most of the length of “Last Year’s Wishes” can be traced back as responses to a number of fan arguments from hiatus up through mid season 2. I did my best to patch up canon in such a way that I could love both characters equally.

I would never ship Malex without loving both sides of the ship. I know a number of malex writers/fans feel the same way as well. I also feel (and maybe I’m wrong- I haven’t taken a survey) there’s  also probably a number of malex writers/fans who love Alex just a little bit more than Michael. Which is fine, ship how you want to ship.

My blog header was about that though, a reminder to myself to laugh a bit about ship politics.

SaL anon here with a special Sunday double header! Let's talk Four and Five, which is your enneagram type and mine. Coincidentally I think its also sort of Alex's type (he's 4 and 8 I think) and Michael's type. Four has some of the most gorgeous SaL lyrics and imagery with sad reflection but a hopeful end, it's so fragile feeling. I love the musical buildup of Five though, the increasing energy up until the lyrics talk about releasing it, which is where it goes soft and thoughtful.

Ooooh, our first dip into to enneagram songs! For anyone not familiar, the enneagram is sort of like a personality test in that there are different types (9) that people fall into, each with their “childhood wounds” that help inform their reactions to things, and “wings” to other types. That is a very basic explanation but it’s really quite fascinating and the Sleeping at Last podcast goes into each type and breaks it down much more comprehensively. But unlike a simple personality test that types people by traits they exhibit, the enneagram is entirely based on internal motivations for why you do things so it’s more like a roadmap to help a person discover themselves more deeply. (some therapists like to do enneagram tests at the start because some types are “avoidance” types so advice to set problems aside and focus on self-care are not helpful for those types because they are already avoiding the problems) Consequently, typing characters (and other people) can be hard, plus people can mistype during times of stress (as a 4, when I’m under stress I exhibit the more unhealthy type 1 behaviors)  but since everyone is really a mix of types with more dominate types at the fore-front it’s easy to identify with bits from each type and to find different types in our favorite characters (One gives me major Alex vibes. like, OOF)  but both of these songs are so good and man, listing to Five and thinking about Michael was an experience but lets start with Four first! (I’d like to point out that often the enneagram types have animals associated with that type (as you can see in the artwork for these songs) and I personally find it very fitting that type 4 is a cat.)

I am going to try to not let this get too long so I’m not going to break down all the lyrics but there are definitely some Malex feels in this one.

This bit makes me think of the lost decade and how while, as Michael says, the sex was epic (and clearly an emotional connection is there but both are too afraid to expose that vulnerability), they didn’t have the time or ability to build something solid and lasting. The next bit is right where the music starts to swell and it just paints this picture that so easily fits with Malex, thinking of Alex and his leg, Michael holding that photo of them as teens, and both of them fighting to get out from under their trauma. 😭😭😭

but i’ve fallen in love with a ghost and i lost my balance when i needed it most this blurry photograph is proof of what i’m not sure but it feels like truth

i’m stuck swimming in shadows down here it’s been forever since i came up for air

But as always, the last lines are full of hope and for me personally always hit me right in the feels. And it’s something I desperately want for both Michael and Alex. To realize that they have inside of them, what they’ve been looking for all along.

Now, on to Five, which is big Michael Guerin vibes and while there aren’t a lot of lyrics, they sure pack a punch! (also, just noticing the telescope in the artwork for this one and I just... *squeals* it’s so perfect!) The very opening lyrics hit me with pre-teen Michael feels.

i want to watch the universe expand. i want to break it into pieces small enough to understand, and put it all back together again in the quiet of my private collection.

A alien who doesn’t have a place, doesn’t want a place in this world. This is also lost decade Michael, searching for answers. Then we get hit with all the feels about Michael dealing with his love for Alex over the years.

i’m hypnotized by this anomaly. such strange uncharted territory- a white flag waves in the dark between my head and my heart. my armor falls apart, as if i could let myself be seen, even deeply known. like i was already brave enough to let go. and now i want to generously lose this energy that i’ve been hanging onto so desperately.

*cries in Malex* Michael is constantly at war between his head knowing that he can’t count on anyone but himself, that no one is coming to save him, and his heart knowing that he loves Alex, he wants Alex, and he wants them to work. And Michael doesn’t let people see him, not really. His armor is that drunken cowboy swagger that he presents to a town that is never going to look deeper than surface level anyways, so why bother. But Alex sees him, and that has not always been a good thing over the years. But again, this song leaves us with this tremulous hope and is hitting me in every single one of my Malex-season-three-wishlist feels.

i finally feel the universe expand- it’s hidden in heartbeats, exhales and in the hope of open hands.

I just love this idea that Michael has been looking for “home” for somewhere to belong, and that when he finds it, it’s not a building on an different planet, but it’s the people in his life who love him.

A change was needed. So I took out my Malex header and replaced it by one wonderful header made by @dasheaders-blog, and I’ve made a few decisions.

I’m taking a break from writing for RNM. I’m not saying I won’t be writing in the future, but right now I’m not in the right state of mind to create a safe space for the characters and for myself. It’s kinda chaotic in my headspace right now, in true Michael Guerin fashion.

I’m also taking a break from reblogging anything RNM related that’s not fiction or art. Gifsets will be scarce, because they hurt me the most, and I will try to reblog actor-related stuff, but I can’t make any promises. In this blog there won’t be spoilers for upcoming episodes, or gifs or metas for RNM if I can prevent it. I have unfollowed some blogs and blocked some others after the events of these past days. I needed it for my mental health, and I can already tell it’s working. 

I may still watch the show, but that’s unclear right now. I might have to revisit my no-spoiler policy, because I don’t trust the showrunner anymore. I still ship Malex to a degree, but it’s difficult to me right now because they meant a lot to me and it’s currently in shambles, so I’m veering towards Forlex but even that I can’t be sure. These days, the only thing I’m sure of is that I don’t want to go through what I went through Monday and Tuesday this week.

I’ll understand it if any of you needs to unfollow me given this change of heart that may or may not be permanent. I will still be around, and you still can come to my inbox or my DMs to talk about anything you’d like, including RNM. Just keep in mind that I might not reply straight away or that I might even choose not to reply. In that case, I will let you know and I will profusely apologize.

I’m really, really sorry. But I have to take care of myself, first and foremost. I need to be selfish just this once.

I am not quite done with the end of this story, but I wanted to share a sneak peek of the last chapter. Also please feel free to use the header if you like it, I made it for sharing  

In the depths of the New Mexico desert, the world was about to come to an end. No one knew this of course, but the world had a stubborn tendency to overlook all the signs that pointed to the end. It was a long tale filled with things all long tales have - heroes and villains, secrets and intrigue, war and love. 

But for the epic lengths of this tale, it cannot be told fully without this right here. It was, after all, the story of Michael Guerin. And therefore it was, and will always be, the story of Alex Manes. 

Standing in the valley of the Pecos River, surrounded only by trees and the many and sundry guns pointed at him, Alex smiled a bloody smile at the man standing in front of him. 

“Do you want to hear a story?” he asked, voice serene for a man with almost a dozen guns pointed at him. 

“Once upon a time, in a land far far away...lived a princess.”
