in light of discussions around anti-hero and taylor’s relationship with fame, here is a quote from her interview on skavlan in 2012 that might give us an idea of what to expect:
My life is a constant balance of understanding that I can’t control everything. I can’t control what people are gonna think about me, and I can’t control what people are gonna write about me, but I can control my actions and how I live my life. I overthink things a lot, like I always wanna make the right choice, not for the sake of how it’s perceived, but because I do understand that I’m living a life, you know, and I’ll have to look back on that life twenty years from now—if I’m lucky—and be proud of the choices that I made. Cause it is intense, being 22 and having kind of a magnifying glass on you, so I guess you just try to make the right choices and control what you can.
meanwhile, eight years later, this is how she described peace:
Peace is a song that’s extremely personal to me because there are times when I feel like, with everything that’s in my control, I can make myself seem like someone who doesn’t have an abnormal life, and I try that every day. Every day, it’s like, ‘How do I make myself, among my friends and family and my loved ones, not see this big elephant that’s in the room?’ Because I don’t want that elephant in the room. […] The song is kind of like, ‘Is the stuff that I can control enough to block out the things I can’t?’
and this is anti-hero
I struggle a lot with the idea that my life has become unmanageably sized, and that I, you know, not to sound too dark, but the idea of not feeling like a person…

okey, so i thought that midnights was gonna be about anxiety and spiraling thoughts that keep you from sleeping (and maybe it still is), but then taylor comes and announces labyrinth… which it also goes with the theme of being lost in your thoughts, and not being able to escape.
i was exited because i expect mythological references from that song (not to be that girl, but theseus managed to escape from the labyrinth thanks to ariadne’s string… one single threat of gold tied me to you)
people have been pointing out that she recently mentioned pan’s labyrinth (2006 movie), which has always crept me out, and i started thinking that maybe midnights has a bit of a horror theme going on. i think it would be more of a classic horror thing, like frankenstein, dr jekyll and mr hyde, the picture of dorian gray type of horror.
also this lyric from daylight:

I CANNOT wait for October 21st, I have never been so sure I'm right about anything in my entire life. I want to see hetlors cry and deactivate their fucking accounts. I want to see James Charles apologies all over tik-tok about how gay white men "promise" to do better in their allyship next time. I want to see hetlors try and spin all their homophobic denial about "me! Out now" on lesbian visibility week in retrospect. I want people to expose swifties "supporting" taylor with old hetlor tweets.
I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE FUCKING DRAMA TO HIT THE FAN ON OCTOBER 21ST. TAYLOR SAID YOUR NEMESES WILL DEFEAT THEMSELVES BEFORE THEY GET A CHANCE TO SWING AND I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE HETLORS CRASH AND BURN IN 2 WEEKS.
I can't wait for gaylors to get the last laugh, tagging hetlors like "this your straight queen?"
Tumblr media
I want to see them explain why they thought this was a straight woman:

I want to hear them apologize for hetsplaining lavender to us and hairpin drop and Betty.
I cannot wait besties.

i think bejewelled is gonna be about the rerecordings but in a positive way because “ you wear the same jewels that i gave you as you bury me” , which references her stolen masters, and the merch bracelet with the jewels representing all her albums,* including the stolen ones *???? but i think it’s gonna be more along the lines of “ look at me bitch i’m reclaiming my work and now my “jewels “ are worth more than yours could ever be” or something like that? if that makes sense ?

“Just like clockwork, the dominoes cascaded into line” as in… arranged the dominoes so they fall precisely… masterfully constructing a clock so that it runs perfectly, predictably, fatefully.

a few midnights predictions after a chat with @cages-boxes-hunters-foxes:
lavender haze - ‘we lie awake in love and fear’ / ‘a journey through terrors and sweet dreams’ - the fear of losing your love due to outside forces (‘you said there was nothing in the world that could stop it’), combined with the beauty of actually being in love. reminiscent of what she said about the ‘phantom pain’ that inspired both dancing with our hands tied and the archer in different ways.
anti-hero - ‘we lie awake […] in turmoil and in tears’ / ‘we twist in our self-made cages’ - this one’s pretty self-explanatory. it’s basically an exploration of her most restless and self-loathing nights.
midnight rain - ‘a journey through terrors and sweet dreams’ - as romantic as the title sounds, it seems more reminiscent of clean and evermore to me. the position of the song on the tracklist also makes me think it’s a turning point in the album just like look what you made me do is. this is the point where she starts to feel as though she’s cleansing her mind through her sleepless nights. the only way forward is through - a fairly common theme in her discography since 1989.
question..? and karma - ‘…pray that we aren’t - right this minute - about to make some life-altering mistake.’ - she questions her own involvement in her future (i.e. the possibility of ruining your life with one mistake), while also subverting this theme by attributing her fate to karma (i.e. a mix of her own actions and involvement from a higher power.
vigilante shit - ‘the floors we pace and the demons we face’ // ‘for all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching’ - she is a vigilante of her own past and mind.
bejeweled and labyrinth - again, ‘our self-made cages.’ cages are both metallic/shiny on the surface (‘gold cage, hostage to my feelings’) and hard to navigate mentally.
mastermind - this is pure conjecture, but I think mastermind will be a hoax style summary of the album’s themes. since mental health and fate seem to feature in both the album prologue and the track titles (especially karma), mastermind will probably address those. Taylor herself is the mastermind behind her own fate: all the self-mythologizing and wondering about ‘invisible strings’ in her life is her doing.

I have a personal theory that the fur coat Taylor is wearing in the standard album cover is this one from the Stella McCartney winter 22 line.
Tumblr media
Matches the cool 70s look theme, and Taylor and Stella obviously have history together.

Interested whether Labyrinth is going to be about getting lost in all the twists and turns or finding your way out! Of course it could be a combo of both, but which will be predominant?
