so i reblogged this post the other day and i've been thinking about it since then, constantly. I've been working retail for over a year, with the goal of eventually working for like. the government? im some office job kinda deal? but also not really wanting to do that because it sucks and i would go insane.

but i hadn't ever considered. not. doing that. i knew trades were a thing but my brain associated them with like, plumbing. landscaping. mechanics. that kinda thing. And I really hate having to do that kind of work, because it's sweaty and gross and bleh.

But then i looked in the notes and people mentioned like. Instrument repair and stuff. and that actually made it click for me?

I'd been thinking of the trades as like, purely manual labor kinda stuff, where you go home at the end of the day sweaty and exhausted. It didnt occur to me that it was also the category that artisans fall under too.

and thats like. really appealing.

so, as someone who is a big history nerd, and also someone who likes creating things, and someone who is really fascinated by technical work, and who has made multiple projects *out of wood* in the past, because it was fun... the idea that *I* could one day become a master carpenter that makes bespoke furniture is really appealing? Most people buy cheap plywood stuff from big box stores but there *is* a market for custom pieces. there's lots of stuff that's been outsourced to machines, but there's all sorts of techniques that can only be done by hand.

I wanna make stuff. I think I'm gonna try to do that.

but then nothing came of it?

her hair color went back to normal but her eyes stayed red this time around too, which extends to her battle sprites as well, not just the portrait

and it is a little strange to see magic coming directly off her fingertips- usually, official art that depicts her wielding magic has it come from her mini-hakkero- but not too strange

and Reimu’s reaction to her self-proclaimed motive is this

Recently got a message asking about where I got my Marisa cosplay, and I kinda just wanted to info dump abt it! Cosplay is incredibly fun and I always recommend it as a hobby (:

Here’s the entire thing taken apart. First thing is the slightly oversized black dress that has plenty of room underneath for a petticoat. Thrifted that one.

Second is a button down shirt of some kind, bc I’m partial to a button down look over the white turtle neck look. I stole it from my partner who had it pre-transition.

An apron you can tie around ur waist, got mine at a costume shop in Salem.

A nice witch hat, preferably with some kind of bow and band around the main part. Costume shop in Salem. Etsy sells witch hats as well!

A big ass petticoat that fits under the dress and doesn’t hang out too much, got mine at Modern Millie in Salem.

Thin ribbon for the bow in the braid, thick ribbon for around the neck as a lil neck tie thing. Any craft store will do (:

I don’t have a wig, my brother gifted me money to get my hair bleached by a professional hair stylist two b-days ago. Wigs work really well tho!!

Optional mini-hakkero, i got mine as a gift from my partner from a shop on etsy!

Optional broom, i’m still working on turning a freshly fallen branch i found into a broom by carving it and chopping of nubs with a pocket knife! Careful about termites and burrowing bugs, it really should be freshly fallen. Take a lot of nature walks and I promise you’ll find one (:

Last but certainly not least the bloomers. Got mine at Modern Millie in Salem. These are optional and literally nobody is going to see them under your petticoat and dress. Unless ofc you fuck in cosplay, which you’d be surprised how many friends and hookups have asked to do that after mentioning cosplay as a hobby. It’s more than four but less than six.

I still want to get four gold buttons to sew into the front of the dress, make a better hat, and finish making my broom by sanding it, lacquering it, and tying in broomcorn.

For makeup I do bright fucking yellow glitter than kinda sparkles like stars.

How I put it all on: undergarments, bloomers, button down, black dress, straighten out the shirt under the dress and get the sleeves right, pull the petticoat up under the dress, tie the apron around the front, braid hair n put the bow in, tie bow around the button down collar, ‼️fill the two large dress pockets with trinkets and bobbles and mushrooms, ‼️then the two apron pockets with acorns and cool rocks, and mostly importantly, put that hat where it belongs, your head

Scara's a Youkai, Hoyo's Just Dumb

Genshin lore is driving me up a wall, what else is new? But this is one particular thing that has been bothering me for a while. Because in an effort to make “original lore” for Scara (I’m not writing his full name), they basically confirmed what he actually is while trying to deny it.

So Explain?

Scara, as described in the game as a “humanoid puppet” created to be a prototype for the Raiden Shogun. There are really no details to how he came about or what was done to create him. The Genshin Wiki says that Khaenri’ahn techniques were used to craft him, but I’m calling bullshit because there’s no source for that info. 

This puppet was meant to be “indistinguishable from true life” as Ei’s character story called it. The word “youkai” is never used to refer to him and they took time to say that Hanyuuda Chizuru, a tsukumogami, is an entirely different sort of being from Scara.

Now let’s talk about how all of that is stupid and that Scara is a purposefully induced Tsukumogami.

WTF is a Tsukumogami?

Tsukumogami (付喪神), literally translates to “tool god” or “artifact god”. They are abandoned objects that gain sentience after 100 years of being out of use. Some have specialized names, such as the biwabiwaboku, or the karakasa-obake, while some don’t. Modern tsukumogami can range from being mischievous but ultimately harmless to being vengeful, dangerous beings. The types of tsukumogami known to be the most likely to exist are dolls. 

Because dolls have a human shape, it is far easier for them to gain a soul, and have a human understanding of the world. But at the same time, because of that grasp of human emotion and attachment they are also likely to be the most wrathful when abandoned. There are several urban legends where doll tsukumogami are left somewhere and find their way back to their owners to get revenge for being abandoned, the most prevalent being “Mary-San”.

I don’t need to go into detail about how this lines up with Scara’s backstory.

Existence and Creation

Now, it’s not known to happen in mythology or mytho-history, but in fiction, tsukumogami can be purposefully induced before a century comes to pass. An example of this is seen in Touhou 14: Double Dealing Character, in which Shinmyoumaru Sukuna uses a magical mallet to make tsukumogami out of a gohei (purification rod), a mini-hakkero (Eight Trigram Furnace), and a knife. 

And to further this point, by the next game, Urban Legend in Limbo, Shinmyoumaru took back the overflowing magic, causing the objects to revert back to being objects. So causing a tsukumogami to come to life on purpose is not unreasonable, especially if you play fast and loose with mythology.

In the context of Genshin, Scara can easily be seen as an induced Tsukumogami. And because Ei didn’t take back the magic she used to create him, he remained alive rather than reverting back to just being a doll.

The Symbolism of Fire

There’s a certain Shinto tradition called the “Ningyo Kuyo”. In which dolls are brought to a temple and given a proper funeral and farewell. This is done in order to avoid them becoming vengeful tsukumogami. Oftentimes during these ceremonies, these dolls are burnt as a send off.

However, sometimes people tend to just skip the ceremony and just burn the doll. The purpose being is that it’s meant to lay the doll to rest, and if there is already a spirit inside, to grant it freedom, rest, or and a chance at a new life.

Fire symbolism is in two parts of Scara’s backstory. First with the Mikage furnace, in which he should’ve perished but was protected by a device containing Niwa’s heart. Perhaps it can be read as despite going through fire, he did not burn, meaning it wasn’t his time to be laid to rest yet. 

The second, and important one is with the human child he adopted as a brother. The boy he befriended made a doll in his image to remember him by, but when he succumbed to an illness, Scara burned down the house with his body and doll inside. While on surface this was done so he could cast aside the memory of his connection and “betrayal”. But in the context of a send off, it can be read as him making sure both the child and the doll don’t linger in this world in the same way he did. What’s more is that in his teaser trailer, he walks through, and sits in the burning rubble, as if he is considering putting himself to rest as well.

Gods and Names

Tsukumogami are technically gods because “Kami” usually translates to god in English. However, in Shinto, Kami aren’t gods in the Western sense. Shinto uses the religious concept of Animism, in which there is a god or a spirit for everything and every concept. This is what Kami are. Not gods in the Western ‘can smite you’ way, but spirits that embody certain aspects of nature and the world. Most “godly’ kami tend to have names while most Tsukumogami, and a few other beings with the “神” suffix aren't given unique names.

Most tsukumogami, hell, most Youkai in fiction tend to name themselves, rather than have their names given to them, as seen again with Hanyuuda Chizuru. But that's really only when they form naturally. Those who weren’t induced and even some who were have already accepted themselves as Youkai, and don't care about being gods. So they name themselves and live their lives.

But because Ei created a tsukumogami with the intention of it housing something divine, and never named it, she had basically done the equivalent of calling a project complete even after not doing the last step. Scara was always going to feel incomplete. Because Ei quite literally never finished the process. 

The “Kojiki” and “Nihon Shoki” are sacred books of Shinto, meant to explain the existence of the already worshipped gods. In both, Izanagi, the father of the gods Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susano-o named them the moment they sprung to life. Because they were named by a god, they became gods. 

For all intents and purposes, he could’ve been a god, but only if Ei named him. Because he never was given a true name when he was first brought to life, he simply remained as just a youkai rather than “godly” kami so to speak.

How Disappointing

It’s so funny to me. Hoyo had literally the perfect set up to incorporate numerous parts of a mythology into their lore. Doing so would’ve given a, frankly, previously flat character far more depth and meaning to his story. But yet, in an effort to be “creative” they ended up with something rather boring and poorly defined.

Not like that is new for them.

But I can still grieve the lost potential.

Punch was walking around the streets of the small town between RSA , HSA and NRC and decided to Head to the Diner . But that when he he started to notice how Silent the Streets were especially for around Halloween . It was ominous with decorations blowing in the wind he saw trash cans t inipped over and wads of Paper rolled on to the ground. It was Definitely time for him to head back not, that the situation at Night Raven was any better but Punch didn’t know that .As Punch Turned around he heard Something

Seija Kijin is an amanojaku. They're kinda like demons or imps. It could be said they're the opposite kind of demons to Oni. Oni are big and strong, but hate lies and dirty tricks. Amanojaku are small and weak, and lie and cheat wherever possible to win. It's in her nature to act contrary to everyone else around her. Good is bad, love is hate, burnt or raw is cooked just right, etcetera. She loves it when people hate her, and hates it when people like her. She's one of the only Touhou characters to truly be maliciously evil, to cause problems for people for no reason other than sadism.

Seija Kijin first appeared as the 5th boss of Touhou 14: Double Dealing Character. But in fact, she was the real main villain. She had goals of overturning Gensokyo and throwing it into chaos. To this end she desired the all-powerful, wish granting Miracle Mallet. Unfortunately, only a descendant of Issun-Boshi was able to use the mallet. To this end she manipulated Shinmyoumaru Sukuna into using it, by claiming that Gensokyo's youkai were responsible for the inchlings being trapped in the World of Oni. She tricked her into thinking she was a well-intentioned woman who wanted to liberate the weak youkai and overturn society so the weak ruled the strong.

Oh, and in Marisa's route in which she keeps her corrupted Mini-Hakkero, she turns fully evil and joins Seija in a rampage across Gensokyo.

Unlike most Touhou antagonists who tend to surrender after being defeated, Seija refused and went on the run. This resulted in her getting her very own game as the villain protagonist of Touhou 14.3: Impossible Spell Card. In it, she used magic items she'd stolen from around Gensokyo to avoid spell cards from various characters looking to collect a bounty on her head. She lost what few allies she had, with even Shinmyoumaru turning on her, but she still got away in the end.

After this she essentially vanished for half a decade, until a surprising return in the book The Grimoire of Usami. Even more surprising was her role: she appeared to be willingly taking orders from the Inchling she once manipulated! Shinmyoumaru wanted to use Seija's ability to flip things to flip the rules of Reimu's fireworks festival from "play it safe" to "be as dangerous as possible". Seija even saw a suprising change in tune: she was so impressed with Shinmyoumaru's newfound aggression that she decided to follow her from hereon out! When they next appeared, doing character reviews, they were practically finishing each other's sentences. That said, given Seija's history and Shinmyoumaru's gullibility, it's not unlikely Seija's just playing her for a fool even more.

Seija often talks in a way that makes it impossible to understand what she wants. She does things she says she hates but clearly enjoys, and sometimes this doesn't even run contrary to everyone else's opinions. It's uncertain if she actually goes against the grain or she just follows the crowd but with a nonsensical, Bizarro-esque method of speaking. She sometimes makes comments condemning more popular people such as Toyosatomimi no Miko, and praises lesser youkai for their flaws, like considering Wakasagihime better for not being able to survive on dry land. However, it's uncertain how much she actually believes these things and how much it's just her contrarian nature. She also really likes it when people let go of any discipline they once had and let loose and run amuck. As such, she doesn't like the Myouren Temple or Byakuren very much.

Seija Kijin has the ability to flip anything. Forwards is backwards, up is down, left is right, etc. She uses this in her spellcards, reversing the camera, reversing some of her bullets, or even reversing your controls! Outside of that, she primarily shoots purple fireballs and red and blue energy arrows at you, as well as the black-with-colored-outline bullets used by Eirin in the past. Her spellcards are not regarded as very beautiful in-universe, and she's hated for cheating in fights.

The amanojaku's most famous story is the story of the Melon Princess. Once upon a time a melon washes down a stream until it is found by a human couple. Inside they find a baby girl. They name her Urikohime, or "Melon Girl Princess". They raise her well and tell her to beware of strangers. Suddenly, one day, an amanojaku comes knocking on her door, asking to be let in. She opens the door just a crack and the amanojaku forces its way in and KILLS HER AND SKINS HER AND WEARS HER SKIN! The amanojaku lives her life for a while, but their disguise is blown when Urikohime, reincarnated as a bird, exposes it.

Seija Kijin's name means something like "right or wrong, human or oni".
