Paul Newman in The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (John Huston, 1972)
Cast: Paul Newman, Jacqueline Bisset, Tab Hunter, John Huston, Stacy Keach, Roddy McDowall, Anthony Perkins, Stacy Keach, Anthony Zerbe, Ava Gardner, Victoria Principal, Ned Beatty. Screenplay: John Milius. Cinematography: Richard Moore. Art direction: Tambi Larsen. Film editing: Hugh S. Fowler. Music: Maurice Jarre.
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean belongs to a sub-genre that prevailed in the early 1970s; I think of them as "stoner Westerns." The huge success of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (George Roy Hill, 1969) spawned a lot of movies that took an irreverent look at the legend of the American Old West and were aimed at the younger countercultural audience. They include such diverse films as Little Big Man (Arthur Penn, 1970), McCabe & Mrs. Miller (Robert Altman, 1971), The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid (Philip Kaufman, 1972), Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Sam Peckinpah, 1973), and Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks, 1974). Most of them were seen as commentaries on American violence and the quagmire of the Vietnam War. Paul Newman, who had played Billy the Kid earlier in his career in The Left Handed Gun (Arthur Penn, 1958) as well as Butch Cassidy, found himself the go-to actor to portray Western legends: In addition to Judge Roy Bean, he was also cast as Buffalo Bill Cody in Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson (Robert Altman, 1976). The Life of Times of Judge Roy Bean began with an original screenplay by John Milius, who wanted to direct it and to star Warren Oates in the title role, but when Newman read the script, he arranged for the rights to be bought up and for John Huston to be brought on as director. There is a whiff of hommage to (or perhaps parody of) Butch Cassidy in the film: As in the earlier film, which has a musical interlude with Butch and Etta Place (Katherine Ross) larking around to the song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," Judge Roy Bean has a scene in which the Judge, Maria Elena (Victoria Principal), and a bear lark around to the song "Marmalade, Molasses & Honey," which was written for the film by Maurice Jarre, Marilyn Bergman, and Alan Bergman. The song earned an Oscar nomination, but Huston was unable to find a consistent tone for the movie, which lurches from broad comedy (much of it provided by antics with the bear) to satire (the triumph of an avaricious lawyer played by Roddy McDowall) to pathos (the death of Maria Elena). It is laced with cameos, some of which provide the film's highlights, particularly the over-the-top performances of Anthony Perkins as an itinerant preacher and Stacy Keach as an albino outlaw named Bad Bob. But Ava Gardner simply walks through her scene as Lillie Langtry -- a decided anticlimax, given that she's been the off-screen obsession of Bean through most of the film.

I hope EVERYTHING reminds you of me & us, & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE.
Every Taco Tuesday, or when you see street tacos I hope it reminds you when we would go to primo's together & load up & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE.
I hope sitting in front of a fire reminds you of us & the 1st time we made love or when we would be at the cabin in Big Bear & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE.
I hope every time you see a treehouse you're reminded of us watching treehouse Masters & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE.
I hope every time you read a book or you see our sun reading you're reminded of me reading to our son & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE.
I hope every time you see the Minnesota Vikings you're reminded of me & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE.
I hope every time you go swimming with our son or near a pool he reminded of swimming lessons we did for our son & always in the pool the three of us together & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE.
Every time you go to a concert I hope you're reminded of us in the concert we used to go to & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE.
Even though I don't smoke anymore every time I you see a stoner or sure mention of weed I hope it reminds you of me & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE
Every load of laundry you do I hope that it reminds you with me & how I always did that for us & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE
Every time you have to clean the other reminds you of me & how I always get the cleaning for us & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE
Every Christmas when you see a Santa Claus I hope that reminds you of me & that first Christmas we shared together & it was Rikers first time seeing Santa & sitting on his lap & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE.
Every year on your birthday when you go to blow out your candles I hope that it reminds you of me on your birthday that we shared together & I put all those random things on top of the birthday cake I got for you & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE
Every 4th of July when you see fireworks I hope that it reminds you of me & our first 4th of July together pulling over on the side of the freeway & watching the fireworks all around us & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE
I hope that no matter where you go, no matter who you're with, no matter what you're doing, that there's something that reminds you of me & that you threw us away & THAT YOU WISH I WAS THERE
....And I have to hope that this is true, because it is for me. Even though you threw us away. Everything reminds me of you & it's not fair if only I'm subjected to this daily torment of missing you.
Because you should be here & it kills me that you're not.

When my parents got back from Arizona, my mom got a job working in Minnesota with her sister, making $15 an hour as a Girl Friday. My dad went to Duluth and learned how to drive a truck. So, they were separated for quite a while, I guess.
While mom was at work, there was a local stoner kid, a teenager, who would watch me during the day.
Later, I was sent to Spooner where my dad watched me for a few weeks.
I asked Mom why she left a job that paid so much money and she said her sister would walk in when she was brushing her teeth and yell at her for using too much water. Then Dad got a job in Chicago.

Michigan, the first Midwestern state with legal marijuana, offers lessons for Minnesota
In an old garage once dedicated to restoring classic Thunderbirds, the unmistakable scent of cannabis hangs in the air. Hot Box Social, which today looks more like a cozy living room than an auto shop, is a co-working space for stoners. Or a game night destination. Or a pop-up dining hall. And it’s a matter of when, not if, someone hosts a wedding here, said Hot Box manager Samantha Baker. “We’re…

James Coburn and Kris Kristofferson in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Sam Peckinpah, 1973) Cast: James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Richard Jaeckel, Slim Pickens, Katy Jurado, Chill Wills, Barry Sullivan, Jason Robards, R.G. Armstrong, Luke Askew, John Beck, Jack Elam, Rita Coolidge, Charles Martin Smith, Harry Dean Stanton. Screenplay: Rudy Wurlitzer. Cinematography: John Coquillon. Music: Bob Dylan. With its laid-back pace punctuated by moments of violence, not to mention its soundtrack by Bob Dylan, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid may be the ultimate stoner Western*. After being mutilated by MGM -- the credits list six film editors -- it was savaged by critics on its first release, but the release on video of Sam Peckinpah's original preview version in 1988 caused a reevaluation of the film, with some now calling it a masterpiece. I wouldn't go that far: To my mind the narrative is still too elliptical and the inspiration -- rewriting a myth -- too commonplace. But it has moments of brilliance that transcend its flaws, such as the beautiful sequence of the death of Sheriff Baker (Slim Pickens), with its fine use of the iconic performers Pickens and Katy Jurado and the underscoring with Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." James Coburn, always an underrated actor in his prime, is wonderful as Pat Garrett, and while Kris Kristofferson was never much of an actor, he and Coburn play well against each other. Dylan was no actor, either, but he's used well here as the enigmatic figure who lets himself be known as "Alias," and the scene in which Garrett forces him to read the labels of canned goods while he toys with other members of Billy's gang is nicely done. The gallery of character actors both old (Chill Wills, Jack Elam) and new (Charles Martin Smith, Harry Dean Stanton) is welcome. Its post-censorship era's exploitation of women -- there are an awful lot of bared breasts, though we also get a fleeting butt-shot of Kristofferson -- is overdone, and it certainly wouldn't earn any seal of approval from the American Humane Society after the scene in which live chickens are used for target practice.
*The huge success of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (George Roy Hill, 1969) spawned a lot of movies that took an irreverent look at the legend of the American Old West and were aimed at the younger countercultural audience. Most of them were seen as commentaries on American violence and the quagmire of the Vietnam War.
