HMV Mirai Nikki posters

Here's a piece of Future Diary merch that I'd somehow never come across before: This "bonus poster" distributed by HMV that features Yuno in an HMV employee shirt and plaid skirt.

Because I've only recently learned about this thing, I know next to nothing about it right now. I imagine some of the community's ardent collectors can probably tell us more, but at the moment I'm left to assume its label as a "bonus" means it was an exclusive item meant to entice you to buy Mirai Nikki from HMV. Most likely, I'd wager you received this item for pre-ordering Volume 1 of the blu-ray/DVD release from HMV... ?

I specify "Volume 1" because it and its 12/22/2011 release date are given heavy promotion on the other three posters that HMV displayed/gave out. Those other three, sadly, do not contain any unique artwork. Regardless, here are pics of all four.

Future Diary Radio

One piece of Future Diary merch that's always kinda frustrated me are the "Future Diary Radio" CDs. Each of the three CDs came as a gift for pre-ordering the Blu-Ray limited editions of volumes 7, 8 and 9, respectively. The CDs are said to contain a radio segment of the characters featured on the covers talking about the state of the series (as of the respective volume each CD came in) their thoughts, feelings and futures, from their own POV. And that's about as much as we know from the Future Diary Radio...

Unlike the other CDs related to Future Diary, such as the Oyasumi and PSP wallpaper CDs, we don't have access to the contents of the Future Diary Radio online. No matter how much I look for it, nothing really comes up, just the images of the cover art for each CD, which honestly aren't very high quality either (not to mention they somehow managed to mess up the spelling of "diary" on the first cover lmao).

The part that truly frustrates me the most is that I'm unable to buy the CDs at the time, and the thought of them becoming lost media isn't that far-fetched given how long they've been out. I've been meaning to translate them for a while if I ever came across the audio (kinda like I did with the Oyasumi CDs), so if anyone reading this owns a copy of the CDs and is willing to share it online, I would really appreaciate it!

I know that the radio segments may not add much to the story, but my curiosity is winning me over. After all, I'd love to see what sort of conversations Yuno and Yukki have together about the show, and heck, Minene and Yomotsu? Don't even get me started on MurMur and Kousaka fighting. So yeah, I hope that one day we can see the contents of the radio come out. I would hate it if we're left with nothing but the bad quality pictures, like other merch from the past... not to mention the other random merch that we only know of because of promotional booklets, but I better end my rant here before I lose my mind over an MN mp3 player ;-;

Would love to see more of Tachibana Naoto in general! He's such an underappreciated and unexplored character despite being so crucial to the story

I think the trio of Hinata, Takemichi, and Kisaki was underexplored and should be discussed more. There's so many interesting things to say, but I guess their trio isn't very popular

The official merch has a tragic absence of Hina, Naoto, and Kisaki 😵‍💫

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).

I don't usually consider AUs, but I've come up with a couple over time. I thought a Mirai Nikki AU would be interesting for Tokyo Revengers, but how about a Mirai Nikki AU for Monster? Idk how any of that would work though, lol

I haven't posted about attending a local anime con in quite a few years now. But every time I go to one, I'm always on the lookout for representation from my faves — merch or cosplay or artwork or something based on Danganronpa, Future Diary, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, etc. Those are probably still my biggest three faves after all these years.

AS SUCH: Above are pics of Danganronpa merch/art/crafts/etc that I found for sale on the vendor floor this year! I also saw two DR cosplayers (a Toko and a Mondo).

All told, this was a better showing than usual! DR representation in booths had been shrinking at my area's primary anime con ever since 2017, but we suddenly have a resurgence on our hands courtesy of this brand-new secondary anime con in town. (Yeah, this show — "Planet Anime" — was a brand-new thing this year.)

Weirdly, I found PMMM/Magia Record representation to be at an all-time low for my city's cons. Zero cosplay and - for real - only FOUR pieces of merch total at all booths combined. Given that we're on the cusp of an all-new movie AND still in the midst of multiple manga, that seemed odd to me. And for the first time, I found literally zero Future Diary/Mirai Nikki representation. Actually, nothing from mangaka Sakae Esuno of ANY kind. Which = sadness, but I guess this day had to come eventually. (Since I was only present at one day out of the three-day convention, I'll take it on faith that there was probably a Yuno cosplayer out there somewhere — that's always been a constant at these events. I felt your lingering presence, my friend... whoever you are. :P)

There was no sign of ANY love for Master Detective Archives: Rain Code just yet! I suppose it IS only a few months since it came out, though. Maybe next time... or maybe it needs some more adaptions/merch?

I did find a lot of artwork/crafts for sale related to Fire Emblem, which you'd think would be satisfying given my recent passion for "Engage." But unfortunately, literally none of what I saw was related to Engage... or any game/character in the franchise other than Three Houses. It was WALL-TO-WALL Three Houses stuff and NOTHING else. (Unless you count Smash Bros art that happened to have the FE fighters in it.)

These shows are always CHOCKABLOCK with stuff for whatever is the massively popular anime of the moment. And if you know me, you know I don't usually care about the popular anime of the moment. :P So yeeeaaah. I'm always there desperately hunting down the stuff I love hidden in the cracks between all the things I DON'T love. Because the whole place was FULL of merch and cosplay and artwork for stuff like Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen and the still-huge My Hero Academia; stuff like that. SO: Anime I found either off-putting or kinda bland or which eventually drove me away over time (respectively, in that order).

Mirai Nikki booklets! (Part 2)

Let's start with a heartfelt confession: I only have two booklets left. In some volumes they were simply missing, in others they were nothing interesting and promoted other Shonen Ace titles. By that time Mirai Nikki had already lost its sense of novelty among readers, so no surprise there.

For this reason I will not write a lot, this post is more for fans of big and pretty pictures.

Vol. 9

Volume 9 of the manga hit store shelves in November 2009, and meanwhile Mirai Nikki 13-ninme no Nikki Shoyuusha was being prepared for sale, which was expected in January 2010. From here we get a nice little promotional booklet with a synopsis and a description of the characters and game mechanics.

To be honest, I'm not much of a fan of the game's main story, but the extra stories and merch like CD drama, pillowcase and other stuff hold a special place in my heart. Amano Rea making a game about Murumuru and mochi, what on earth could be more charming? That's why I was so fascinated by this flyer.

Redial

This time it's not the manga, but the DVD. I posted just one spread of this, but it's actually a little booklet of 8 pages, including the cover. The content is standard: synopsis, characters, and a few backgrounds as a bonus (some of which you can get a close look at in the Redial manga pages in Part C).

The fact that Kurusu is among the characters is amusing. As the description says, Kurusu does not appear in Redial itself, which raises many questions in view of the absence of 3rd, 8th, 10th, and even 7ths (I offer my condolences to Ai, she tried so hard) in the booklet. Esuno mentioned in the guidebook that he likes ossan-characters (I'm not sure how to express it accurately in English, like… old guy?..), based on which the Fourth appeared, and Murata Tomosa (Yuno's VA) once said that the Fourth is her favorite character, hmm… Perhaps the answer is hidden somewhere among these facts.

Bonus

And finally, the holy grail of my collection! It's an illustration card signed by Esuno for Volume 9 of the manga.

The caption reads,

"Thank you for purchasing Volume 9 of Mirai Nikki! This volume is full of 9th and Nishijima's appearances, but where will they go from here… I hope you enjoy it!"

No, Esuno, I didn't enjoy it. T_T As a NishiMine fan, I cried into my pillow all night. But as a Minene fan, I absolutely adore this card… Huh.

Bonus (?) 2

While talking about the T-shirt in the first part of this review, I completely forgot to mention one nice thing! In addition to the signed Minene card, Esuno drew many more like it, among which is the card with Yuno in that very shirt! You could get it with Volume 4, and you can see it now in the official guidebook.

At this point my little booklet review comes to an end! I hope I was able to show you something new and interesting.

And it's time for me to get back to what this account was created for, which is to draw some funny jpegs (I tell a lie, it's pngs). Bye-bye!

spoilers for those who haven’t read it! tho actually this is mostly math/generational analysis

i’m not surprised by the reveal that mc’s lilith’s descendant, but it doesn’t bother me that much and here’s why!

i hope all this math is correct, i haven’t taken a proper math class since high school oops

from a biblical timeline, the great celestial war happened before adam and eve were cast out of paradise (because satan tempted eve with the apple) but of course that doesn’t align with the man lilith loved (because it certainly wasn’t adam) or belphie bringing back anime merch for levi lmao. so we can probably assume it happened after that period.

actually, it’d be pretty cool to see some fan or canon content about lilith/the brothers’ view on adam/eve, like satan tempting them to punish adam for hurting lilith ooo

in any case! it was a long time ago, and if we’re not assuming it happened at the very beginning of humanity, we can at least assume it happened around jesus’s time? that seems fair. the timeline is kinda super messed up with the implication that anime existed for so long, but whatever. so let’s say year 0

assuming one generation is about 30 years, 2020/30 = 67.3 generations - there are at least 67 generations between MC and lilith assuming she lived in year 0

ancestors per generation can be counted by 2^n = x, where n is amount of generations and x is ancestors

so in your first generation, 2^1 = 2 (your parents)

2^2 = 4 (your grandparents)

2^67 = 1.47E^(20) = 147,573,952,589,676,412,928 ancestors related to you on the same generational scale as lilith (in perspective! that’s 19598134474.1 times greater than the current population of the world, 7.53 billion!)

you know how if one of your grandparents is polish, you can say oh yeah i’m 25% polish? well

so, in my eyes, the degree of mc’s relation with lilith is to tiny that it’s negligible, on a biological scale. (my headcanon for why mc has all these spiritual connections to lilith is that she’s their mitochondrial mother (meaning she passed it down through a line of daughters until it reached MC through their mom!))

of course, the issue here is how the brothers treat you, but if anyone wanted a biological analysis of mc’s relation to lilith, i hope this helps ease your mind! now, for the brothers to realise that you’re not lilith… it kind of feels like yoosung and rika all over again haha. i think it was supposed to make you a little uncomfortable? i’d still keep playing if it turns out to be a “hey we’re all a happy family :)” game (without romance of course!!!) we have a ton of lovely fan MCs to use as love interests instead~

but! i’m sure it’ll turn out alright in the future chapters, i have high hopes! in any case, i’m taking this current content as some brewing conflict for the future chapters, because there’s no way this is our happily ever after, 1 month after the game was first released.

i love love love time travel stuff but it’s also so complicated and my head hurts if i try to think about it too much. so, diavolo and barbatos knew all along that it was MC, as lilith’s descendant, who freed belphie? and they sent MC back to the past under the guise of “checking” because they had to, in order to have them free belphie in the first place and get them to this point in time? is this time travel linear, like in harry potter 3, or did it open up an alternate universe and we’re completely separated from our original one like in mirai nikki? and why did barbatos warn us so sternly about 1) not interacting with anyone 2) not seeing our past self? we did both of those things oops. was it just for the sake of convenience and not having to explain time travel, or does it have actual consequences? there are time travel versions where you die immediately upon seeing yourself, so actually that’s what i thought happened when we saw MC disappear from mammon’s arms.

i’m also right there with everyone doubting barbatos, i don’t trust that guy one bit no matter how cool and intriguing he is  and i’m fairly? certain? we’re going to go back to our original timeline. why else would they show everyone waiting for MC in the extra chapters? you have to play those after you finish the whole chapter, so i feel like the devs are definitely reminding us ‘you left your OG timeline behind! they’re all still waiting for you!’. Like, bells should be going off in our heads that something’s off and i can’t wait to see what it’ll be!

The Future Diary telephone/toshō cards are another piece of obscure Future Diary merch that came out with the release of the visual novel “Future Diary: the 13th Diary Owner.” For those who don’t know, telephone cards or テレカカード (terekakādo) as they’re known in Japanese, are prepaid cards used for public payphones, while toshō cards are basically gift cards exclusive for Japanese book stores. As far as how they were distributed, there were 5 cards released along with the original version of the visual novel, and another 4 for its re-release. These cards were not included in the game box though, as they were given out in physical stores. Not exactly sure how they were distributed within the stores, since the bottom of the cards says “not for sale,” but from my research, they were only available through physical stores. The first 5 cards released had the manga art style (as this was before the anime came out).

These three are telephone cards, which I’ve seen posted around a few times.

This one’s another telephone card, but I’ve never seen anyone else post it outside of this one auction site. (The image is not the best quality, so I put another picture of its illustration next to it.)

Lastly, here’s the only toshō card that came out from this release. (It’s for 500 yen as you can see).

Bonus: I have seen a few people posting this picture saying that it’s another one of these cards, but that’s actually not the case. This is a B4 sized wall tapestry, realsed for the Re:Write version of the game.

Bonus bonus: Ever seen this double-sided illustration?

This is actually a sleeve for the game’s disk, which came in the limited edition bundle of Re:Write (the re-release). The Japanese sites that I saw mentioning this piece of merch referred to it as a “jacket” (ジャケット), which left me confused at first thinking there was a whole ass jacket that that was released as promo merch, but turns out that “jacket” is just another way of saying “sleeve” for a disk in Japanese. And bonus points if anyone recognized the artwork from the sleeve as the same one that appears in that elevator ad banner.

I’ve watched this anime in 2015 and I still haven’t found another one that catches up to it, it’s my favorite anime of all time. I actually earn my wants by making cosplay props for other cosplayers as a sideline when I have spare time.

I think red eyes are cool, I even own red contact lenses myself.

I once had a dream where there were people I didn’t know and they oddly said goodbye to me before I woke up. I will never forget about it, they broke the fourth wall or smth.

I would like to learn how to ride horses fast because of AOT

My favorite place in the world is Baguio Philippines because its cold, and it reminds me of AOT (big ass trees, horses, and looks walled because of mountains)

Some cons I’m dying to attend are those that are in Japan and Singapore.

I love cons in the Philippines, people are so welcoming and warm.
