Moon 7
I am so happy with this moon!! I'm not sure how often I'll be able to put this much effort into pages again, especially the backgrounds, but I wanted to spend some extra time on this moon since so much happens :3
The first page features Juniperstar, Mousekit, and Shimmerkit from @nettleclan-clangen! I had SO much fun drawing the babies <3
Crowheart has main character syndrome and honestly I'm so here for it. PLUS OUR FIRST CANON SHIP! PebbleCrow my beloved omg you have no idea how much I wanted to spoil this <33
I'm also going to start including honorable mentions from now on!
Honorable mentions:
Haybrook and Primrosetuft go hunting together.
Fawnstar is finding the responsibility of leadership to be quite the heavy burden.
Stinkbutt caught Snailpaw complaining about her behind her back.
Sunkit tells Primrosetuft a fact about snails, and another, and another..

Okay I have the family history now
All of this takes place in the Dark Forest, and the kits are Dark Kits
1: Starting The Family
Badgercrest and Ferrettail couldn't conceive kits on their own, so Ferrettail tricked a she-cat into having his kits. Once those kits were mostly weaned, Ferrettail killed her with the help of his true mate.
While the fake parents hid them away before the deed, it is possible that at least one of the kits, curious or frightened or both, sneaked over and witnessed the act.
Carrying them as far as they could, Badgercrest and Ferrettail settled in an incredibly concealed clearing, where they built a den for them and their kits. They named their kits Ratkit, Shrewkit, Mousekit, and Volekit.
2: Raising The Family
The kits didn't know anything outside of their home and kin.
Badger and Ferret would tell their kits over and over about how this home is the safest place for them, and that other cats will hurt them the first chance they get.
They trained their kits harshly and for extended periods of time. When anyone expressed displeasure, they made sure to reiterate that they were only so hard on them because the world would be harsher.
The kits became molded by this harsh training. Mousepaw became cold, believing that he doesn't need anyone, while Shrew viewed her littermates as weaker (though they both still loved their kin).
Volepaw and Ratpaw, on the other hand, were beginning to break, constantly worried that they didn't have their parents' approval.
As time went on, the roles began to switch.
Voleice was the family's healer, and because of that, she was in good graces with both her parents--even if she did doubt herself often. Ratdusk pushed himself more and more, burning for their approval, until nothing else mattered but working every second to make his family better.
When the first litter are fully grown, Ferrettail and Badgercrest bring a new litter to the family: Chipmunkkit, Squirrelkit, Molekit, and Stoatkit. They state that their real parents can no longer care for them, and don't say what exactly happened to the parents.
With both litters, the kits were not fully weaned. While the first litter could manage, Squirrelkit in the second litter fell sick from the early weaning, and passed.
3: Deaths + Betrayal
Badgercrest's death came as a cold blow to the family. They found her remains--or what was left of them, close to the border of their home (many cats don't use borders in the Dark Forest, but the rodent family does).
It wasn't clear what had happened to her, but everyone agreed nonetheless that it had to be the work of a dangerous outsider.
When Mouseclaw met the same fate, the same conclusion was made.
That was why Ratdusk was furious with his once-closest littermate, Shrewshadow, when she met with a strange tom. After all, that tom could be the same cat that killed their mother and brother.
As a young cat, Shrewshadow had been her parents' star-kit, but as she grew, she felt more and more isolated. It wasn't her that her family loved, but her contributions to them, what she could do. She had enjoyed sending more time away, and that's how she met Dusklake, a tom who actually enjoyed her company, seemed to really like who she was, even if she did nothing for him but nuzzle and laugh.
4: Shrewshadow and Kits
Shrewshadow wasn't planning to have kits, and was panicked when she found out. She knew that her family would be furious with her, and they were.
Ferrettail was enraged, but admitted that the family could use the new numbers. He strongly suggested the names for the kits, even though Shrewshadow had wanted to give them water-based names.
When she told Dusklake, he was happy, but said how he wanted to raise them as friends. But Shrewshadow knew that her family would never allow it, and she was right--when Dusklake tried to near the camp to see his kits, he was chased off by Ferrettail, who gave him a harsh sprain.
5: Leaving
Dusklake tells Shrewshadow that they should take some time apart, explaining that he feels weird around her.
Not long after, Shrewshadow notices how her son, Mousekit, avoids the adults, huddling beside Badgerkit. Inspecting them, Shrewshadow sees that Badgerkit was inflicted with a claw-wound.
That is the final straw that allows Shrewshadow to leave. But when she sneaks out to tell Dusklake the plan, she can't find him anyware.
Doubts crept in again. Her family and home was all she knew. She had been told all her life that everywhere else, everyone else, was dangerous and would try to kill her and her kits. Mouseclaw and Badgercrest were proof of that, but Dusklake was a contradiction. Dusklake was the only reason she had to believe anything different, and he was gone.
Ultimately, she decides to leave, with or without Dusklake. But when she's sneaking through the trees, she's caught by Ratdusk.
Her brother, who had once been her best friend, accuses her of betraying the family and knowingly getting with the cat who killed their mother and littermate. He goes further, stating that she must have been part of it, and that her kits have tainted blood.
Shrew didn't want to fight her brother, but when he leapt at her kits, she had no choice. They fought viciously, and Ratdusk ended up pinning Shrewshadow. Having no choice, Shrewshadow shut her eyes tightly and swung, slitting his throat,
Horrified, she grabbed her kits before anyone else could find them, and ran, grieving for her brother as they went.
To Be Continued

Moon 5
Hoooo boy, a busy moon! I have so many LORE THOUGHTS and KNOWLEDGE. What's going on, Sanddapple? 👀
But look at the BABIES. WEE BABS. I love them all so much, especially with their tragic backstory
STINKBUTT. STINK. BUTT. Yes, that's really her name, and yes, she really did choose to keep it. My grumpy old lady. I'd be grumpy too if my name were Stinkbutt, but I mean she chose to keep it so you go girl. She's the prettiest marked cat in the clan and her name is Stinkbutt. I love it here
Inkstripe and Crowheart drama?? I know most of you probably forgot about Inkstripe since he has been determined to be a Background Character but apparently he got pissy about that fact :]
After next Moon update I'll post Moon 6 Allegiances and open up character asks!! So get yer thinkin' caps on because you'll be able to ask any cat 3 moons or older questions in the next week or so c:

---
Rattlepaw was not a stalker. She had a perfectly normal interest in Carnationspeckle and Oilstripe. Why shouldn’t she want her mother to find someone that made her giddy? Oilstripe was the perfect choice! How else could Rattlepaw and Carnationspeckle grow their little family? They deserved more than just one another. They deserved a bigger family. As such, while Rattlepaw practiced a song with Rabbitjoy, she had one ear cocked toward Carnationspeckle and Oilstripe, who were happily sharing tongues before their sunset patrol. Recruiting them to practice dancing for the Harvest Moon had been the perfect plan!
“Mom?” Shadowdrop marched into the camp, scanning for Downstar. The sand caught on his muddy paws, making it look like he had white mittens. “Mom?”
“Fennelspot took Downstar out to exercise,” Rabbitjoy explained, looking over her shoulder at the black tom.
“Well then is Weedfoot around?” Shadowdrop sighed.
“I heard my name!” Weedfoot jogged out from the dirt place. “I’m here, I’m here. Hi, Shadowdrop. Was there an issue with your hunt?”
“You could say that,” Shadowdrop admitted. “We were hunting by the gardens and you’ll never guess what we found.”
“What, a kit?” Oilstripe scoffed. Shadowdrop went eerily quiet. Oilstripe’s eyes exploded. “Wait, am I right?” Rattlepaw’s leather pelt slipped off her back as she scurried up to Shadowdrop. Carnationspeckle stood beside her, her tail brushing against her side.
“That’s where you found me,” Rattlepaw gulped, catching Carnationspeckle’s eye.
“Tell us about the kit,” Weedfoot said. “I assume it isn’t a Clan kit from the way you’re acting.”
“We think so,” Shadowdrop admitted.
“You think so?” Carnationspeckle repeated with a tilt to her head. “Does the kit have a Clan name?”
“Yes, but when we spoke to her, she said she didn’t come from a Clan,” Shadowdrop explained. “I don’t remember anyone in the last few Gatherings mention a Mousekit, unless she’s lying about the name.”
“No one outside the Clans would name their daughter Mousekit,” Rabbitjoy pointed out.
“Rustshade is checking the borders in case the kit’s description matches a kit from another Clan,” Shadowdrop said. “Clammask is bringing the kit along.”
“Carnationspeckle, wake up James and make sure the nursery is ready for a guest,” Weedfoot sighed with a soft flick of her tail.
“We won’t be long,” Carnationspeckle chirped, bouncing where she stood. She seemed more like a kit than a grown molly as she hurried to the warrior’s den.
“She might be cold…” Weedfoot muttered, glancing at the windy sky. “Rabbitjoy, can you start a small fire? Oilstripe, I want you to fetch Fennelspot. A lone kit like this will likely need a check-up.”
“Downstar might get mad at me if I interrupt her exercise,” Oilstripe gulped, avoiding eye contact.
“I saw them not long ago, I’ll get Fennelspot,” Shadowdrop grumbled. Just as he turned around, however, a wirey white molly strolled past him, flicking her tail while Clammask followed behind. The kit had the faintest of stripes and fur paler than Rattlepaw’s ashy skin. She couldn’t have been much younger than half a year.
“This is RippleClan?” the kit scoffed. “You live in a big boat? How has it not fallen over?”
“You must be Mousekit,” Weedfoot purred, stepping in front of the newcomer. “Welcome. Hopefully we can get you home soon. What Clan are you from?”
“I already said I’m not from a Clan,” Mousekit huffed, sneering.
“You have to be with a name like Mousekit,” Clammask sighed. “If you ran away because you were being hurt, you can tell us. We won’t drag you back.”
“I’m called Mousekit because my furless, spineless, coward of a mother spent my whole life telling me everything she knew about the Clans,” Mousekit snapped, turning on Clammask. “She’s the one who brought me out here. About time, too. I was sick of catching mice for humans.” Rattlepaw’s stomach twisted as she held her breath. No wonder Mousekit didn’t react to her.
“Your mother was furless too?” Rattlepaw gulped. She slowly approached Mousekit, who studied her with a cold glimmer in her green eyes. “Was her name… Rebecca?”
“How do you know that?” Mousekit said as the fur on her neck bristled. Rattlepaw couldn’t stop herself. She squealed and dove at Mousekit. She shoved her face into her shockingly soft fur.
“She was my mother too!” Rattlepaw cheered. “You’re my sister!”
“Get off of me!” Mousekit snapped. She shoved Rattlepaw away. Rattlepaw tumbled onto her back. The sand scratched her fragile skin.
“Rattlepaw!” Carnationspeckle hurried out of the nursery. She and Oilstripe helped Rattlepaw back to her feet. Oilstripe brushed sand off Rattlepaw’s skin while Carnationspeckle licked her white ear.
“That was a hard tumble,” Oilstripe huffed. “Are you alright?”
“A little sore, but I’m alright,” Rattlepaw said.
“So you’re Rattlesnake,” Mousekit said, whiskers twitching with a strange contempt. “Our mother talked often about how she had to ‘save you’ from a breeding life.”
“How is she?” Rattlepaw asked. She braced herself for a venomous response as Mousekit’s tail flicked about.
“Why should I care?” Mousekit snapped. “She didn’t care about me. All she talked about were her plans to take me away as soon as she got the chance. I guess she took it.”
“If you like to hunt, you’ll like this place,” Carnationspeckle purred. “I took in your sister when she arrived here. If you wanted to, we could get to know each other more.” Carnationspeckle rested her tail over Rattlepaw. Rattlepaw pressed into Carnationspeckle with a soft purr.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Mousekit stares down Carnationspeckle and Rattlepaw. She yowls, “I had a mom, and she was awful. You aren’t my mom, and you aren’t my sister!”]
“You want to treat me like your kit?” Mousekit scoffed. “I had a mom, and she was awful. You aren’t my mom, and you aren’t my sister!” Rattlepaw pressed harder into Carnationspeckle. Her big copper eyes poured unspoken needs over Mousekit, but the pale molly turned away and back to Weedfoot. “So where can I stay?” It took Weedfoot a moment to collect her words; the small crowd looked between Mousekit and Rattlepaw, unsure whether they should have said something or not.
“Come this way,” Weedfoot said softly. She guided Mousekit across camp to the nursery. Mousekit walked with her tail high, leaving Rattlepaw and Carnationspeckle in her dust. While Carnationspeckle continued grooming Rattlepaw, something hardened in Rattlepaw’s chest.
She was already trying to find her mother a mate, and she’d just been given a sister. If she could push Carnationspeckle to fall in love with Oilstripe, she could convince her own flesh and blood to love her back.
