It occurred to me that this bloke was my go-to example of “character who doesn’t need to put clothes on because they just materialise on him” and I thought it was funny to compare my ofmd blorbo to him because first rule of comedy be specific and all that. But then it occurred to me that I have no idea how well this British cartoon character from the 1970’s who even I only know about via my parents has survived in the public consciousness.

Mr Benn (1971, 2005)

An ordinary man visits a costume shop and each time he tries on a new outfit it sends him on an adventure.

 The drawing style is somewhat simple and there’s very little movement, the camera mostly just zooms in on areas of the still pictures but this makes it feel more like the story books. The structure of the beginnings and ends are repeated every episode which contrasts the different adventures while giving the narrative somewhere familiar to begin and return to.

 The structure does get a little too formulaic once one has watched a couple since there are always guaranteed things to occur at almost the same times each episode, with even the same words to accompany them. The episode with the Native Americans got a bit too close to harmful stereotypes but fortunately went in a better direction just as Mr Benn was about to get colonial.

 For most of the stories Mr Benn is a worthy hero making positive changes to the places he visits like toppling tyrants or spreading socialist ideas subtly to Feudalistic eras and societies, in particular the one where he get the princess to eat by feeding the starving townsfolk at the same time. The tricks he plays are amusing because they’re for a good cause and the whole show is low pressure thanks to the soft voice of the narrator and the fact that all the characters are oddly polite.

 There are only a few niggling flaws with the nature of the stories like how he always needs a souvenir to remember the fact that he travelled in time and saw dinosaurs. Another is that his tricks, while entertaining, require everyone he meets to listen to him and believe him without question. Some smaller points are that dinosaurs are separated from early humans by millions of years and the zoo episode concludes with the animals exchanging small cages for bigger ones which is a nice message against animal cruelty but it’s still not ideal since the animals would more probably prefer to not live in a cage at all.

 5/10 -Can’t find a better example of average-

 -Mr Benn’s home street, Festive Street, is based on Festing Street, London where the creator of the show lived.

-The musician who worked on the show was found because he lived on the creator’s same street.

Ikkaku choked on her tea at the mention of her very accidental nude photo faux pas with Benn. She had really, really hoped that Mr. 3 would have forgotten about that, or at least would offer her the dignity of never mentioning it again, but it seemed she'd given him too much credit.

"It WAS accidental!" she insisted, face turning bright red. "I meant to send him an underwear pic! I had a cute new bra and panty set! The tasteful nude was supposed to be given to him later!"

At least Benn had been a good sport about it. She'd even gotten a nice picture back (from Shanks, admittedly, but it was of Benn so it counted, even if his pants were still on). Still, it was a moment Ikkaku would gladly erase from existence if she could.

Sadly, she didn't have such a power, so she'd have to settle for getting payback on a certain butler someday. Oh, revenge would be sweet indeed...

Just realised that there was a heck of a lot of Yorkshire propaganda in the children’s tv shows I was exposed to early in life and this may have shaped who I am as a person

#There was also some Welsh stuff but not as much #Cumbria as well probably though I don't think that three year old me could have identified Cumberland or Westmorland as a place #The Yorkshire propaganda was so strong that until I was a bit older probably most of the North of England was 'Yorkshire' to me #By contrast there was very little Scottish stuff until Balamory came out but I was already of a pretty advanced age #And I was also able to read books bby that time where Scotland featured more heavily #But my earliest experiences- Teletubbies aside- must have been shaped by two lands of grey stone cottages and dykes and rolling hills #Scotland is similar to these places but slightly different and of course just that bit bigger so has a more internal variety #Add to that the fact that in my experience the average Central Belt Scot spends a lot of time in either Yorkshire or Lancashire on holiday #-mostly Blackpool or Scarborough- and the impression is solidified #It's probably a good thing nonetheless though #I mean I don't keep up with small children's tv shows now (obviously I have no toddlers) #But even when my younger brothers were that age I remember less northern stuff and a lot more southern English stuff #Admittedly I also had some videos from slightly earlier (hence Ivor the Engine was one of the Welsh ones even though it wasn't on tv) #I mean I suppose I had old videos like Mr Benn and the Herbs too which were loosely 'southern' but they didn't have the same impact #But yeah #Apparently my outlook on life is very much a product of some great northern English propaganda phase in the late 20th century #With a slice of Wales alongsid eit #Anyway I won't go on much longer otherwise I'll end up on a rant about how children's tv shows have degenerated #It's all characters called the Fimbledethumps or something who talk in southern baby voices like 'Me want a huggy wuggy' #Which I suppose started with stuff like the Teletubbies but that was the only example I remember and even that had some other things #Kids aren't stupid give them a whole universe give them proper characters and proper storylines #Kids need to understand The Concept of Yorkshire from an early age #Or even the possibility that there are strange litter-collecting creatures who live on Wimbledon Common and Uncle Bulgaria reads the Times

yourusername welcome back to my postgame penalty box update show: i finally saw a mason marchment fight live and quinn was also there edition!

after quinn's personal record of three trips to the penalty box night, he decided to be good! this was probably due to the fact that i will fight him over any penalty against the stars (hey, remember when you committed interference against robo on february 27th last season? because i sure do), but we'll pretend it was because he's trying to redeem himself since my baby daddy trevy-z is at zero. the war is strong with these two!

you know who did get a penalty? one of my new besties wyatt "johnny" johnston! his penalty was for holding mikheyev in the second period! (holding penalties aren't ones i hold grudges against, so you're in the clear! but also you do nothing wrong ever, so i wouldn't hold it against you anyways) (p.s. i wouldn't have been mad if you fought garly... i was kinda rooting for it)

other penalties include: (in time order) digi for holding against another new bestie harls, mr. captain jamie benn for hooking soucy which created 39 seconds of 4 on 4, craig smith for hooking friedman, and laffy taffy for hooking wyatt's dad joe pavelski all in the first, esa lindell for cross checking garly, hronek for high sticking my blonde prince roope hintz (he got reprimanded for this), and our two fighting majors between the blue eyed menace mason marchment and ian! (mason got an extra minor for unsportsmanlike behavior) (ian was reprimanded for his hit against matt "dutchy" duchene that started the fight)

my best friend, quintin, pulled a jacky boy and fell over nothing! the conversation between the stars broadcasters went like this:

razor: "he was having a moment back there!"

bogo: "he was playing billiards off the bottom of the net to himself!"

razor: "well, he wiped out first!"

needless to say, i was laughing my ass off when i rewatched this game!

special shoutout to demmer for continuing his perfect win streak against the stars and getting his second shut out of the season! i’m so proud of you @/tdemko35 ! (for those who don't know, he has a 7-0-0 record and just gave otter his first regulation loss of the season :))

Thank you for the very friendly letter which was sent to Lasse and me from Benn's! I gave Daniel's strip cartoon to Lasse who very much appreciated to have a helper on the Equator. If one has been drawing strip cartoons for seven years or more there's an everlasting hunt for new ideas and sometimes one ends up in desperation.

We were very thrilled by the Moomin game - it looks good! And it's a real joy and a help in the job to know there's a whole family liking the stories so much that it has gone mooministic! I don't know if you have the very first strip cartoons? Say, m. on the Riviera, m. valley goes djungle, The lonely island, The dangerous winter (where Mymble falls in love with Mr. Brisk). Ten books with m. strip cartoons - three synopsies in each - have been published in Swedish by Gebers förlag, (Stockholm, bot 159) but maybe they're already in the tremendous collection of your son?

Here in Helsingfors the cold has ceased and Lasse and I are beginning to wait for spring. We have a small island each, the very last into the sea, in the Finnish gulf east from H:fors and go out there as soon as the ices break up. On my island there are no trees, only rock and wild flowers and in the middle a mysterious, rather deep lake.

You would have liked the Big Storm (biggest in 60 years) last summer - 11 beaufort! The cellar was full of seaweed and sand afterwards, the boats moored to the hut and breakers going over most of the island. My Moominmamma (aged 86) was enchanted. Afterwards, a helicopter landed on our islands counting the survivors. Lasse was inspired to a new synopsis. Don't you think the Associated Newspapers at Fleet Street should send him to Africa to get new ideas?

Zawe Ashton reveals she got into the 'best shape' of her life in The Marvels but had to reshoot the film after becoming pregnant

Zawe Ashton has revealed she got into 'the best shape' of her life while filming The Marvels but ended up having to reshoot the film after becoming pregnant.

The actress, 39, portrays the warrior Dar-Benn in the film opposite stars, Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani.

Zawe, who admitted to being 'traumatized' from working in Hollywood, felt the grueling training regime required for the blockbuster 'empowered' her.

Speaking at the Bazaar At Work Summitt 2023, she said: 'There was this opportunity for me to get in the best shape in my life [with The Marvels] which I really hadn't been in – getting fit and in shape, but strong and eating well, was a massive part of this journey for me. 

'And then the process of learning stunts and fighting is probably one of the most empowering things that I've ever done.'

Zawe welcomed her first child with her partner Tom Hiddleston last October, with the pregnancy interfering with the shoot.

She said: 'I thought the film was finished, and I got pregnant and had my baby. And then they told me to come back and reshoot basically the whole movie. 

'That, to me, has been the biggest journey with this movie: my physical wellness, my ability to endure, to mentally switch back into that place, postpartum, and come back, and try and kick some ass again. That's really what the landmark of the film is to me now.'

Zawe also spoke about working in the film industry as a young actress and how there were not many measures in place to protect performers from exploitation.

She said: 'I'm probably deeply traumatised! I was working at a point in our industry that is so different from industry that we are working on making for ourselves now. There were no safety protocols. 

'There were no conscious ways that we were thinking about protecting young women. I sort of wipe my brow sometimes, thinking: 'Wow, I actually emerged quite unscathed.' 

'There are so many different ways that we're thinking consciously about protecting the people who are working in front of and behind the camera now.' 

Zawe elaborated on sexism in the industry, saying she felt 'fatigued' from spending so much time worried about her looks.

She said: 'I realised that I'd spent nearly 30 years as an actor, but I'd also sort of spent 30 years performing as a woman, and I felt suddenly so tired.'

'That kind of patriarchal eye, that just gazes on you since birth, it suddenly felt really like that had depleted me in a very deep way.'

'I was suddenly hit with this fatigue, where I didn't want to think about my face, or about my hair and my looks. I didn't want to think about how I could keep presenting myself for a camera or a lens that basically represents this very, very problematic gaze.'

'Where do we draw the line? This is all part of the same spectrum. If you're not seeing women's humanity, if you're not seeing a full human life when you're thinking about the ways that you're putting these kinds of [character breakdown] descriptions together, then the extreme end of the spectrum is you're not valuing women, and that's a much bigger conversation than my industry.'

The actress, who was born to a Ugandan mother and an English father, also spoke about representation on screen.

She said: 'When I starred in period drama, Mr. Malcom's List, there was suddenly this healing moment. I had never ever seen any actor who looked like me invited to the table to perform these entertainment pieces. 

'I hadn't known necessarily that I was hurting so much, until I saw that representation happen, and the success of it take everyone by storm.'

'Growing up as a young biracial girl in Hackney, I was really drawn to the left-field, drawn to the alternative. And part of the bullying I encountered in my teens was because of that. 

'There weren't really any people of colour who were representing this alternative landscape. When I got the part of Vod in Fresh Meat, I thought: 'This is now my opportunity to be that for someone else who didn't maybe have it.' 

'I was willing to do whatever it took to make that character as edgy and authentic as I felt she could be, so that it would invite that person who is not seeing that kind of representation on screen, to really feel seen.'

 Zawe, who has not revealed the name or sex of her child, told how she feels like she is 'growing up' with her baby.

She said: 'The most surprising thing for me has been how quiet I feel like I've gone in motherhood.'

'Right now, it's been really about collecting women's stories. For some reason, we don't value ageing in our society. And there are women who have given me nuggets of wisdom that I literally could not live without. And they are all over the age of 60.

'Why we're not opening a platform and listening to women who have actually lived life is crazy to me. I'm a new mum. I know so little. I'm growing with my child… the child is going to teach you and lead you if you're open to it, and that's the moment to enjoy so much.'
