Monday 27th March 1944 Every resident of the Secret Annex is crowded around the radio listening to Winston Churchill making a speech. '... I am wearing a nightdress, which is much too small, too narrow and too short.' Anne doesn't say how she feels about this situation. She does say that 'Peter's eyes are popping out of his head' but she attributes this to the strain of listening to the radio.
Tuesday 28th March 1944 I like it much better if he explains something to me than when I have to teach him; I would really adore him to be my superior in almost everything.' DO GIRLS WANT YOU TO MANSPLAIN OR NOT?!

Tuesday 4th April 1944 "Eva's Dream" is my best fairy-tale, and the queer thing about it is that I don't know where it comes from. Eva's Dream features a rose who is full of herself just like the flower in The Little Prince. The Little Prince had already been published but only six months before this diary entry and in America, not Europe, which means Anne couldn’t have read it.
Tuesday 11th April 1944 "Then they will find Anne's diary," added Daddy. "Burn it then," suggested the most terrified member of the party. This, and when the police rattled the cupboard door, were my worst moments. "Not my diary, if my diary goes, I go with it!" But luckily Daddy didn't answer. .......................... If we bear all this suffering and if there are still Jews left, when it is over, then Jews, instead of being doomed, will be held up as an example. Who knows, it might even be our religion from which the world and all peoples learn good, and for that reason and that reason only do we have to suffer now. We can never become just Netherlanders, or just English, or representatives of any country for that matter, we will always remain Jews, but we want to, too. ............................... For the remainder of this epic entry in her diary, Anne takes stock of herself and states some of her dreams for the future after the war is over. An indomitable spirit.

Sunday morning just before eleven o'clock, 16th April 1944 Poor darling Peter awkwardly fumbling his way towards kissing Anne on the ear. Anne in ecstasy.
Monday 17th April 1944 Dear Kitty, Do you think that Mummy and Daddy would approve of my sitting and kissing a boy on a divan - a boy of seventeen and a half and a girl of just under fifteen? I don't really think they would, but I must rely on myself over this. ............. To exchange our thoughts, that shows confidence, and faith in each other; we would both be sure to profit by it! Yours, Anne.
Wednesday 19th April 1944 It is so soothing and peaceful to feel his arms around me, to know that he is close by and yet to remain silent, it can’t be bad, for this tranquillity is good.
Friday 28th April 1944 First kiss on the lips.
Friday 5th May 1944 Anne shares what she intends to tell Daddy in defence of her right to go upstairs for a snog. Very forthright and long-winded. Poor Daddy. The next day, Pim (Daddy) reads it in a letter that Anne gives him and he's upset for the whole evening. Anne talks about it as if she's being grown up but I think she actually enjoys how much it upsets him, which is very childish. The day after that, Pim tells her how hurt he was by her words and Anne realises how obnoxious she's been and is ashamed of herself.
Wednesday 14th June 1944 Aged just 15, Anne works out the narcissistic defence mechanism that is projection and also understands how being far more self-critical than others has emotional and social consequences for her. She may be over-estimating how much of an inner life Peter has. He's not as brilliant as her and he may just simply not have those profound thoughts and feelings like she has -

Thursday 15th June 1944 It's not imagination on my part when I say that to look up at the sky, the clouds, the moon and the stars makes me calm and patient. It's a better medicine than either valerian or bromine; Mother Nature makes me humble and prepared to face every blow courageously.
Thursday 6th July 1944 I've so often thought how lovely it would be to have someone's complete confidence, but now, now that I'm that far, I realise how difficult it is to think what the other person is thinking and then to find the right answer.
Saturday 15th July 1944 I simply can't build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever-approaching thunder, which will destroy us too, I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquillity will return again. In the meantime, I must uphold my ideals, for perhaps the time will come when I shall be able to carry them out.
Friday 21st July 1944 With her second last diary entry, Anne is over-excited from optimism about the trajectory of the war and very jokey. So tragic.
Tuesday 1st August 1944 I can't keep that up: if I'm watched to that extent, I start by getting snappy, then unhappy, and finally I twist my heart round again, so that the bad is on the outside and the good is on the inside, and keep on trying to find a way of becoming what I would so like to be, and what I could be, if... there weren't any other people living in the world.
EPILOGUE As for the two girls, they had been sent to Bergen-Belsen in Germany two months before their mother's death. There Anne showed the same qualities of courage and endurance which had already made her noteworthy at Auschwitz. In February, 1945, both the sisters caught Typhus. One day Margot, who was lying in the bunk immediately above Anne's, seeking to rise, lost her hold and fell on to the floor. In her weakened state the shock killed her. Her sister's death did to Anne what all her previous sufferings had failed to do: it broke her spirit. A few days later, in early March, she died.

“I'm overjoyed that at least I can write. And if I don't have the talent to write books or newspaper articles, I can always write for myself. But I want to achieve more than that. I can't imagine having to live like Mother, Mrs van Daan and all the women who go about their work and are then forgotten. I need to have something besides a husband and children to devote myself to!
I don't want to have lived in vain like most people. I want to be useful or bring enjoyment to all people, even those I've never met. I want to go on living even after my death! And that's why I'm so grateful to God for having given me this gift, which I can use to develop myself and to express all that's inside me!”

Extra Topic: "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart." (04 25 2023)
Dear diary, after finishing the play the ‘Diary of Anne Frank’, I found a quote that completely sums up the diary. The quote “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart” best shows the meaning of the play for multiple reasons. The play as a whole follows the struggles Anne and the annex had to face, such as the fear of getting caught by the Nazis, starving, and less resources. However, the kind acts in the play and Anne’s optimistic personality helped me both restore faith in humanity and believe in the aforementioned quote. Take the helpers for example. Miep, Mr. Kraler and many other ‘annex helpers’ compromised so much of their lives just to save eight other lives. They used their money, feared getting caught, and arguably had more downsides than living in the annex. The helpers had to hide this fact while working right under where their secret annex was, yet still helped the annex for around 2 years! Their sacrifice makes me support this quote because it shows that people can do the most extreme things to help others, despite there being no reward. Individuals in the annex also supported the quote. Mr. Van Daan is the best example of this. Mr. Van Daan used to be a very selfish man who stole food from the starving annex for himself, even when he received special treatment and complained about the lack of food. Early on, he showed no apologies or acknowledgement of these crimes. He also had a mean attitude (likely from his smoking habits), being a grumpy man who criticized everything for seemingly anything. However, his change is what made me support the quote. Shortly after Mr. Van Daan was caught stealing food by the Franks, he was just as angry as the victims of his crimes. However, soon after the D-Day announcement from Miep, he quickly realized his wrongdoings and apologized. He admitted his faults and attempted to change from it, and the others in the annex did just that. Shortly after the wild pandemonium, the annex found an agreement on things and realized their flaws and apologized while being hopeful and optimistic, which shows that everyone is good at heart. It is because even if they did bad things, they can learn from their mistakes and show that they have changed this. However, Anne’s tragic future contradicts her quote. While Anne was known for her optimism and had written the book seemingly to fit the quote, her death from the Holocaust from the Nazis was immoral and unjustified no matter what and never apologized. Their actions fully oppose Anne’s quote, especially since their actions were done to the person who supported the quote the most. Nonetheless, I still strongly that the quote "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart” is an enchanting quote that summarizes the whole play, and, this world!

Post 4: Sports Day Extravaganza (04 24 2023)
My second sports day in eigth grade was particualy... fresh and unsatisfactory for some reasons. The most obvious reason would be the repetitiveness of sports day. In contrast to previous sports days (in lower campus) that were often new and overwhelming at times, this sports day felt more underwhelming and expected. The people were the same, the activities were the same, and nothing seemed to make this sports day special so far. I did far less sports than other sports days and watched others do it for most of the part. This whole INDOOR theme made sports day limited in a sense that movement was restricted and that outdoor feeling was gone, which meant less fun. Even worse, my team was last place from second grade till today for crying out loud! However, the new things I was desperate of happened soon boosted by otherwise depressed mood. The sandwiches, the food truck and movies were all excellent things this sports day had. Overall, sports day was still a fun event for me and everyone because of its nature of playing for hours and foodies, despite its repetitiveness and lack of new activities. However, I realized that someone took my hoodie for no reason. Although I had my name in it and although I clearly knew where it was, I guess someone had to steal it to remind how unorganized this sports day was. With these things in mind, I can safely say that sports day was tough this week.

Post 3: Who is June's Favorite President? 04 16 2023
Who is June's favorite South Korean president? The answer is simple: NO ONE! However, my favorite US president would be Theodore Roosevelt for a few reasons. To begin with, he was a person who fought for the common people. A president from the early 1900s, Teddy helped laborers in multiple ways. He helped get workers paid for their injuries. He helped get weaken companies with high influence, and was known for his trustbusting to help make bussinesses more competitive and less abusive. He helped bring peace, putting the Russo-Japanese war to an end and getting a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. He was an environmentalist, creating many national parks and natural sites that are still popular to this day. His aid in constructing the still important Panama Canal and efforts to create the FDA to inspect food and other accomplishments proves that Teddy Roosevelt truly wanted to help the people, not bussinesses. Unlike corrupt politicians, he tried best to listen to people in a time of industrialization, and that actually helped decrease inflation! However, his successful attempt at splintering the Republican Party in half because of his political opponents show his flaws. Nonetheless, Teddy Roosevelt will always be my one of the, if not the most respectable president.

People are really good at heart
"In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."
I agree with this opinion. 
In Anne’s diary, people who had conflicts with others, apologized and felt bad about their immature actions. For example, Miep and Mr. Kraler is the best example who is really good at heart. They helped the people in the annex, sacrificing their life for them. They provided food and also told them what was happening outside. Even though they had no benefit in helping them, they did not stop supporting them. Furthermore, Mr. Van Daan had a lot of conflicts with other people in the annex such as Anne and Mrs. Frank. When Mr. Van Daan steals food at the annex, everyone was extremely mad about him. First, he rejected his action. However, at last, he recognized his fault that he was taking food from his child because of his selfishness. Therefore, he apologized to everyone about his selfish actions. Moreover, Anne is really good at heart too. One episode is Hanukkah. She made presents to everyone in the annex and celebrated them. Anne had numerous conflict with others, especially Van Danns and Mrs. Frank. However, she did not care about the conflict. She thought more about what they like, not about the conflicts. Also, Mrs. Frank is one example too. Even Anne was very mean to Mrs. Frank, she did not act the same as Anne. When Anne had a nightmare, Mrs. Frank tried to stay until she fell asleep even though she rejected it. When Mr. Van Daan stole the food, Mrs. Frank yelled and said strong words to him. Everyone was surprised at her because it was then first time Mrs. Frank yelling to someone. She could not understand Mr. Van Daan’s selfishness which was sacrificing children. We can know that Mrs. Frank cares a lot for children and tries to protect them. Therefore, most of the people in the annex are all really good at heart. 
Also, I can feel people are really good at heart by my friends. When I was in trouble working on my project, my friends assisted me a lot. They explained about the project again and also showed examples to me. 
I felt that actually people who caused the conflict will feel bad about the situation, not just the other person who had a conflict with them. In my opinion, the word apologize came out because all people have a warm heart beside their mind.

The Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank

Summary: Anne’s father (Otto) believes that the war will end soon but the other members in the Annex believe otherwise. Unfortunately that doesn’t aid much of the depression and sorrow around the Annex. For example, Anne is forced to take depression pills and overtime changes her speech from an optimistic point of view to maturity and sadness. The families in the Annex are seen as complainers by Anne, especially Mr. Dussel with uptight rules about etiquette. Everybody including Anne continues to feel anxious because of the terrible events occurring outside like the random gunfire, Jews being separated from their families, and unnecessary deaths. Mr. van Daan believes the war will end in the near future.
Critical Analysis: The quote I chose is “There is nothing we can do but wait as calmly as we can till the misery comes to an end.” Breaking down the quote word for word I can infer that Anne is “trying” her utmost best to stay calm but as the following quotes show, she’s clearly not calm, same for everybody in the Annex. Just as Anne mentions her last adjective “misery” greatly describes how everybody is feeling during the war, especially Anne herself. However, critically thinking a step further Anne mentions the war will “end” because of how optimistic she is with her adolescent mentality. Sad to say, Anne Frank wasn’t able to live long enough to see the war end.
Personal Response: Witnessing the struggles of Anne Frank and the families living in the Annex makes me wonder if they're truly “living”. Seeing the families forced to ration every resource including something not as important as electricity makes me grateful today and how better the world is. If I was ever in Anne’s position I wouldn’t know what to do or what to think of the matter, in all honestly I can’t say if I would be able to live properly as a child or human adult. Anne’s strong will in the beginning was slowly being chipped at overtime and soon affected her in many more ways than one. Taking depression pills is something I could never even think of doing to myself because I have strong people around me to give me strength but you can clearly see how impactful the war was not just to Anne but to everybody involved.

Extroverted Sensing (Se) "Did Mr. Kraler warn you that you won't get much to eat here? You can imagine...three ration books among the seven of us...and now you make eight." Mr. Van Daan's primary motivation for most of the play is tied to sensory activity - namely, eating and smoking. He seems more affected by hunger than the others, leading to conflicts such as cake cutting and stealing bread. As a routine smoker before his time in the annex, he is strongly affected when cigarettes run out, leading to greater irritability. He reacts to the outside world quickly and intensely, sometimes going from a normal state to rage in a matter of moments. In addition, he tries to be practical and focus on reality rather than flights of fancy - part of the reason he clashes with Anne.
Introverted Thinking (Ti) "Just a little discussion over the advisability of selling this coat. As I have often reminded Mrs. Van Daan, it's very selfish of her to keep it when people outside are in such desperate need of clothing..." Mr. Van Daan does his best to use logic, even if his temper often shines out clearer to those around him. He seems interested in cultivating intelligence and thought in his son, and when Peter struggles with his studies Mr. Van Daan is greatly displeased. He can be callous to other people's feelings, sticking to his own thoughts instead. He finds logical reasoning for his actions, such as how he explains why they must sell Mrs. Van Daan's beloved fur coat. Often he uses his thoughts to help justify his feelings, both for others and for himself.
Extroverted Feeling (Fe) "This isn't a quarrel! It's a discussion. And I never head children so rude before." It seems that Mr. Van Daan's emotions are explosive, as he anger often erupts for the rest of the people in the annex to see. He usually does not keep his feelings back - when he is irritated or delighted or anything else, everyone can tell. This display of emotion leads him into confrontations with everyone from his wife to his son to Anne. He aligns himself with the popular values of how people are supposed to behave, which explains some of his anger towards Anne and Peter. However, as demonstrated in Mrs. Van Daan's memory, he does have the ability to be rather charming and personable.
Introverted Intuition (Ni) "Let me give you a little advice, young lady. Men don't like that kind of thing in a girl." Aside from the idea of getting out of the annex and living a normal life, Mr. Van Daan doesn't seem interested in the future. Rather, he is interested on getting food or cigarettes or anything else in that moment, not thinking about the consequences. This is seen most clearly when he discovered stealing bread - instead of thinking of rationing out food and keep everyone as well-fed as possible, he goes out and satiates his own hunger. He is clearly capable of making plans, but these can be rather short-sighted. Generally, he is not thinking beyond his current situation, which leads to a great deal of conflict with the others in the annex.

📚 The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
Wow.
I’ve been wanting to read Anne Frank’s diary for years, and I finally got around to it. And it was incredible. Anne Frank was so young when all this happened to her, but she writes as if she has lived for 40 years. All she’s doing is writing about her life and how she feels, but she’s such a good writer that the reader can actually understand the depth of her loneliness. This is an amazing read; and it’s a sad read, especially knowing the outcome.

Shelley Winters: An Extraordinary Actress By Susan King

When Shelley Winters died at 85 in 2006, much was made of the fact that the two-time Oscar-winner went from a va-va-va voom sex symbol to a matronly character actress. In fact, the Los Angeles Times obit stated she was a “blond bombshell of the 1940s who evolved into a character actress best remembered for her roles as victims, shrew and matrons.”
But truth be told, Winters was always a character actress. However, when she began in the acting in Hollywood in the 1940s, the studio system typecast actresses and actors on appearance. In fact, she once noted she often played the “the bad blonde bimbo usually going up against the sweet brunette.” In fact, before she got her big movie break as a tart waitress who is murdered by Ronald Colman in A DOUBLE LIFE (’47), she was playing the comedic character part of Ado Annie on Broadway in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma!.  And speaking of A DOUBLE LIFE, Winters brought a depth to the character that other ingenues of the era wouldn’t have had the ability to play.

“She was a serious actress,” said Diane Baker, who made her film debut opposite Winters in George Stevens’ acclaimed THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK (’59) for which Winters received her first supporting actress Oscar as Mrs. Van Daan. And it was her role as the zaftig middle-age Van Daan that was her watershed film – the movie in which she segued from glam roles and moved into the forefront of the character actresses. “I believe Shelley exemplified what it was to be a Method actress,” Baker added.
Winters initially had to work hard to convince Hollywood she was a serious actress. Oscar-nominated Sally Kirkland, who knew and worked with Winters from 1962-2006, recalled the lengths she went to convince director George Stevens that she was more than a sex symbol in order to play the dowdy pregnant Alice Tripp, who is murdered by her boyfriend (Montgomery Clift) in A PLACE IN THE SUN (’51).
“When George Stevens made an appointment to meet her at the Hollywood Athletic Club, she made her hair brown. She’s flattened her chest, got a dowdy coat. She sits there for an hour because he doesn’t recognize her. Winters went to these ‘extremes’ because she’s smart enough to know she can not be a blonde bombshell. He agrees to test her and then hires her. She gets her Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Of course, that relationship with Monty Clift was profound to her.”

She also excelled in the gothic thriller THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (’55), the only film directed by Oscar-winning actor Charles Laughton. “I don’t know whether this is a well-known fact, but she felt Charles Laughton really taught her acting,” said Kirkland.” In fact, before she made NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, Winters had taken a Shakespeare acting class with the British actor. “He took her under his wing,” noted Kirkland. “During my entire time with her from 1962 until she died, she would talk about Charles Laughton. From her point of view, he was her mentor.”
Winters also respected Lee Strasberg, with whom she studied at the Actors Studio in New York and later became a well-respected teacher there. “She loved Lee Strasberg,” said Kirkland. “I loved Lee Strasberg. I studied with him from ’64 on.” (Winters got Kirkland into the Actors Studios.) But Kirkland noted that Strasberg was “a very hard man to have a relationship with. He was very closed off in the sense of communications other than when he was critiquing. I think Charles Laughton had a really personal relationship with her. She had him on such a pedestal. She said he taught her more than anybody.”
After THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, Winters left Hollywood for the Actors Studio and soon was appearing on Broadway in A Hatful of Rain with Ben Gazzara and Anthony Franciosa, who would become her third husband. Winters played the pregnant wife of a Korean vet struggling with heroin addiction.

“I was a teenager and saw it on Broadway,” said Kirkland. “It just blew my mind. I said, ‘I have to do that. I have to do what Shelley’s doing.’ Unbelievable impact on me.” Winters also impacted Baker. “While we were on DIARY, if something happened, she didn’t stop the scene,” Baker explained. “One time, something happened to the chair when she was in a scene. The chair went down the stairs. She didn’t say cut or stop acting. She went down the stairs to bring the chair back up and kept going.” Baker recalled that Winters wasn’t “Hollywood” in any way. She had a table at the Silver Spoon on Santa Monica Blvd. Just a normal simple little lunch table where she sat and had people visiting. She used to have her little group of people who were friends who would chat and talk.”
Stevens treated Winters with sensitivity and understanding, Baker noted. “He went along with her creative needs. I think that’s why he brought her onto DIARY, because she was the combination of nerves, humor and at the same time tragedy. She would pull it off.’
“I think she was just a mensch,” added Baker. She was more than a mensch to Kirkland. “I studied with her. I was her assistant. I taught her all her lines in LOLITA (‘62), A PATCH OF BLUE (’65), THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (‘72). I basically did everything she needed help with. She always wanted a young actress, kind of a protégé; I always wanted a stage mom. My mom was fashion editor for Life at the time and didn’t have time to be a typical mom.“

When Kirkland was working with Winters as the actress preparing for A PATCH OF BLUE, for which Winters won her second Oscar for playing the harridan bigoted mother of a young blind woman, she gave Kirkland a gold friendship ring. “It said, ‘To Sally from Shelley. I love you.’”
Winters had to gain nearly 40 pounds for her final Oscar-nominated role in THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE for her sweet performance as a former competitive swimmer. She never was able to lose the weight. Though the quality of her films was a mixed bag until her death, Winters still gave some great performances especially in Pau Mazursky’s NEXT STOP, GREENWICH VILLAGE (‘76), in which she plays the ultimate Jewish mother.
“Paul Mazursky was her friend,” said Kirkland. “Paul was an actor/director/writer at the Actors Studio. He would come over to the house when I was there, and he would talk about the project.” Kirkland said Winters would use music to get her into character and emotional scenes. “She loved opera,” Kirkland noted. “She would put on something like La Traviata and that would always make her cry. Paul, brilliant that he is, kept it in the movie, kept her Method acting exercise in the movie. So, when you see NEXT STOP GREENWICH VILLAGE and you hear opera, you’ll know that was one of the secrets of Shelley Winters’ acting was always to have opera playing.”

The Diary Of A Young Girl

Summary
Anne Frank was a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl who lived in Holland with her family. At the beginning of the book, she introduces herself, her parents, as well as her sister Margot. Anne and her family are hiding in what they call an annex which is connected to her father’s office. It is clear that she can’t seem to get along with her sister Margot, her mom, and Mrs, Van Daan who is also in hiding with them. They currently live in a middle class home in Holland that restricts Jews from participating in regular everyday activities. She writes about the laws that they must follow including being required to attend segregated schools, shops, and just about anywhere. They were also unable to drive, and were required to wear the Star Of David so that they could be identified at all times.
Critical Analysis
In this first section, Anne reveals a lot about herself- the way she thinks, how she sees the world, and her emotional state. She says “I have relations, aunts and uncles, who are darlings too, a good home, no- I don't seem to lack anything. But it's the same with all my friends, just fun and joking, nothing more. I can never bring myself to talk of anything out of the common ground.” (2) Anne tells us about how she has a great social life and is liked by her peers, but lacks emotional support. I think a theme that is starting to emerge is finding her inner self. June 12 was Anne’s birthday, a day in which she received a diary that she had been asking for. Since then, she has recounted her days in that diary, and feels as though this diary is what’s going to allow her to share her thoughts and feelings, and not have a judgmental view. 
Personal Response
So far, I'm enjoying this book. Anne’s ability to remain optimistic despite everything that is going on around her continues to amaze me because her situation is less than ideal, to say the least. The transparency and descriptions in the diary really helps the reader create a vivid image of what she is experiencing. From the start, the diary kept me engaged throughout because she was describing her day to day life which was out of the ordinary. What I liked most about this first section is Anne’s calm attitude towards her situation and her personality. She is okay with not having company all the time; in fact she enjoys it. While I have a feeling the next part of her diary will contain unpleasant experiences of her family being separated, I am eager to find out how she reacts to her new environment. What will happen to her? Will she adjust automatically?
