Fayne Island Protest Journal - Entry #2
I was building Satori's resort when I noticed a movement off the coasts of the Island. I followed Tori into nowhere in the ocean to start a walk-on-water style protest against jellyfish.
"We don't want jellyfish in our oceans! And where are their legs, anyway? Can they even stand? Boooo!"
The demonstration was brilliant, in my opinion, so I watched the influx of sims come and go on speedboats, sail boats and water skis. Until I got distracted by something in the ocean, like deep down on the seabed.
What do you know! A tiny stool protecting a plethora of fruits and vegetables. It is not a dive lot; it's just some random place in the open world, in the ocean. I remember seeing a similar thing in CAW when you don't have a clean Global Layer. I don't know why but I found this amusing at the time. These little things...

1. Patagonia Founder Gives Away the Company — Profits will now go towards climate action

Rather than selling the company or taking it public, Mr. Chouinard, his wife and two adult children have transferred their ownership of Patagonia, valued at about $3 billion, to a specially designed trust and a nonprofit organization. They were created to preserve the company’s independence and ensure that all of its profits — some $100 million a year — are used to combat climate change and protect undeveloped land around the globe.
“Instead of ‘going public,’ you could say we’re ‘going purpose.’ Instead of extracting value from nature and transforming it into wealth for investors, we’ll use the wealth Patagonia creates to protect the source of all wealth.”
2. World’s Largest Container Line Reroutes Around Endangered Blue Whales

The largest container line in the world has rerouted its ships passing near the coast of Sri Lanka in order to avoid potential collisions with endangered blue whales.
“MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has taken a major step to help protect blue whales and other cetaceans living and feeding in the waters off the coast of Sri Lanka by modifying navigation guidance in line with the advice of scientists and other key actors in the maritime sector,” MSC said in a statement provided to Insider.
3. Two antibodies identified can fight all known COVID strains, study finds

Israeli scientists say they have identified antibodies that are so powerful in neutralizing the coronavirus that they could eliminate the need for more vaccine boosters.
A research team at Tel Aviv University experimented with numerous antibodies and found that two in particular neutralize all known strains of the coronavirus, including Delta and Omicron, in a lab setting. Based on their performance in lab conditions, the antibodies could provide the extra protection that today comes from booster shots, adding that this could potentially make extra shots unnecessary among vaccinated people.
4. French charity stream Z Event raises record-breaking $10.3 million for environmental organizations

Z Event, the biggest charity stream event in Europe, broke a record last night. In fewer than three days, it raised over €10.1 million ($10.3 million) for five environmental nonprofit associations: WWF France, Sea Shepherd France, The SeaCleaners, Time for the planet, and biodiversity association LPO.
Since its creation, the event has been breaking records at every event. Last year, it raised a little less than 2022’s total (corresponding to $11.5M at the time).
5. Palestinian farmer discovers rare ancient treasure in Gaza

The mosaic was uncovered just a kilometer (half mile) from the Israeli border. The floor, boasting 17 iconographies of beasts and birds, is well-preserved and its colors are bright.
“These are the most beautiful mosaic floors discovered in Gaza, both in terms of the quality of the graphic representation and the complexity of the geometry,” said René Elter, an archaeologist from the French Biblical and Archaeological School of Jerusalem.

the slugpups were the original implementation of how you'd find them before they were cut due to both difficulty in coding them and no longer being fitting to the game's story. each had a unique personality such as the green one being agressive and protecting their siblings and one of the other two being sickly so you'd have to choose between leaving them behind or taking on the extra burden.

last but not least the judge is a scrapped MSC character. in the time period where spearmaster was cut for being too similar to hunter the devs came up with this secret campaign that would only be unlocked after beating all others in chronological order. set long after saint's time, the regions would've been overrun with the rot (the snow concept did not exist yet) and judge's job was to purify the world. then they decided "hey if we're gonna go through all this trouble why don't we just make spearmaster better instead" and the rest is history. judge was never even coded into the game but i thought it was worth including nonetheless

Dr. Rohan Abbasi first came to the Foundation’s attention shortly following the defense and subsequent publication of his master’s thesis, entitled “Correlation between the potency of hallucinogens in the mouse head-twitch response assay and their behavioral and subjective effects in other species.” (Neuropharmacology 2014). An auspicious start for someone who was, of his own admission, little more than a glorified lab grunt prior to the manuscript’s completion. The Foundation’s growing interest in Dr. Abbasi swiftly followed with his continuing doctoral research into the treatment of complex-PTSD and psychopathies with medical-grade psychedelics and hallucinogens.  Records indicate this culmination of Dr. Abbasi’s academic focus to be some combination of chance — with a Research Assistantship in Professor Szymanski’s research group at the University of Toronto open, and Rohan Abbasi in need of additional funding — and a longer trend of interest in and unorthodox approaches to pharmacology and medicine. It was with this in mind that a small but robustly funded lab at site-17 solicited a freshly minted Dr. Abbasi to interview for an opening postdoctoral research position within the group.  In the seven years since his tenure at the Foundation began, Dr. Rohan Abbasi’s reputation and portfolio tell vastly different stories of the same man. Colleagues and close personal acquaintances of Dr. Abbasi consistently praise the discipline, energy, and creativity he brings to research settings. Indeed, much of Dr. Abbasi’s early career at the Foundation is categorized by a nearly unending stream of proposals submitted, findings published, journal clubs established, and special interest committees formed. It became, however, the concern of his hiring supervisor that such enthusiasm and, frankly, naivete would outstrip the professional demands of this particular role. Following agreement from all parties, Dr. Abbasi’s fellowship continued under the supervision of the Keir group.  Thus, a pattern began to emerge. Dr. Abbasi filled his new position with what former colleagues would now consider characteristic effusiveness and vigor. Rohan himself jumped between several projects, submitting additional proposals for each with or without final approval from his new supervisor, nearly all of which were, unsurprisingly, summarily rejected. This had seemingly little effect on Dr. Abbasi’s commitment to proposing outlandish, unorthodox, unrealistic, and in more than a few cases downright insulting avenues of research or applications of novel (often as-yet-unreplicated) findings.   Neither Dr. Abbasi nor his new team were under any illusions, then, on the circumstances and stakes surrounding the assumption of his third post, now in the Anomalous Entity Engagement Division. Indeed, it seems he has finally understood the precarious situation he has continuously engaged in, and has pivoted to bolstering his professional reputation alongside his personal. It’s with this mutual agreement that Dr. Abbasi has been encouraged to continue his work on class B amnestics.

Space Shuttle Phase B: Grumman Design 532

"Design 532 is a quite different response which we believe holds promise for answering the question 'Can we limit the program risk?' If Design 518 yields a program requiring a funding pattern as shown in Fig. S-2, we will face a situation which may permit neither the development of the space shuttle system nor the development of its payloads. This consideration as well as the NASA/MSC interest in a smaller, simpler, vehicle which could fly earlier, led to the development of Design 532.

Design 532 is a fully reusable, two-stage space shuttle with an initial low cross-range payload of 12,800 lb. Design 532 is also designed for the high aerodynamic cross-range potential and makes provisions for phased implementation of increased payload and performance capability. This approach permits a stepwise increase in capability and growth while decoupling the technical risk and reducing initial cost. Using engines and electronics derived from existing equipment should assure an earlier first flight. Additional performance becomes available with introduction of the high-pressure orbiter engines with a payload of 22,600 lb.

The Design 532 booster is fully reusable with LOX/RP-1 propellants and five F1 engines. A deliberately conservative approach to the design of the booster minimizes technical risk and cost by avoiding development of large-scale hydrogen tankage. Development savings of several hundred million dollars per year appear possible for this orbiter-booster combination.

The Design 532 orbiter will, at first, use three J2S engines, operate at low cross range, and be fitted with first generation avionics. The baseline Design 532 orbiter is achieved by subsequent installation of the high Isp, high-pressure 250,000 lb. thrust engines. Improved thermal protection systems extend cross range, and second-generation electronics improve operational efficiency. We believe that operational experience with the orbiter will show that for certain missions the air-breathing engines are not required. Therefore, the flying qualities have been tailored to accommodate both engine weight in and engine weight out cg positions. Removal of the air-breathing engines and reduction of on-orbit propellant will increase payload capacity to orbit to 52,700 lb. As a further step to make even heavier up-payloads possible, we have made provisions for a potential non-reusable kick stage. This would raise the payload limit to 76,500 lb. In conjunction with this attention to capacity for heavy payloads, the Design 532 cargo bay has been conceived as a 'flat-bed' sized for a 10 ft. diameter payload carried internally, 15 ft. diameter carried semi-submerged, and for 22 ft. diameter carried externally.

'Growth Configurations
Grumman's baseline program for Design 532, described in the Summary, makes provisions for growth beyond the baseline system capabilities. These include a change to second generation avionics which will increase mission reliability by developing to the Fail Ops/Fail Ops/Fail Safe criteria through increased redundancy. (These changes can be limited to those systems which have shown troublesome behavior tendencies in operating experience.) Increased autonomy will also be achieved.

By far, the most significant capability increase will be brought about in payload size and weight that can be delivered to orbit.
We are including Phase B studies of extra-large diameter payloads to 22 ft, and an expendable kick stage that will provide payload capabilities of more than 70,000 lb. to space station orbits or 50,000 lb. to more difficult orbits.

For use with heavy orbiter payloads, a kick stage is added behind the orbiter. Low cost is the primary criterion in the design of this expendable component. Separate LH2 and L02 tanks with ellipsoidal domes avoid the expense of a common bulkhead. These 19 ft diameter tanks are joined by a cylindrical section. At each end, a conical transition section transmits thrust. The forward transition attaches to four built-in thrust points around the center engine of the orbiter. The aft transition supports the four LH2 /LOX engines, their plumbing and actuators. Engine nozzles are shielded by a conical skirt. Gimballing is restricted to 7 deg radially outboard and ± 1 deg tangentially for roll control. This provides adequate control and reduces cost. Instrumentation and controls are reduced to a minimum. The overall length of the stage, before nozzle extension, is 65 ft. Total weight of the kick stage is 230,000 lb. at liftoff. The ideal delta V supplied to an orbiter carrying 76,500 lb. of payload is 3500 fps.'"

Behind the Scenes: Olivier Mira Armstrong
WARNING: VERY LONG POST AHEAD!
This was definitely a journey for me! This project was completely new territory for me because A) this is a character/series I’m not familiar with, and B) I’d be attempting a FULL reroot all by myself. I’d wanted to practice, and my friend and I both decided it would be a good opportunity to do so. If I failed, I did have a rerooter friend who I knew could fix my mistakes.
But the first step was making sure the outfits could be made. Without them, this entire project would be in vain. I’d need an outfit for both dolls, though Alex will be posed wearing only his pants with his shirt and jacket suspended in the air like in this scene:

So anyway, that was the first step. I contacted my favorite seamstress, Elenpriv, and asked if this was something she could do. The doll I’d planned to use was a Made to Move petite Barbie, and the guy has slightly different measurements than a traditional Ken, but since the pants were all that really mattered, it should be okay. Anyway, Elenpriv said the outfits were totally doable!!! YES!
So the next step was finding the doll to use. I knew what body I wanted - the petite Made to Move Barbie because Olivier is pretty short compared to her brother. My friend informed me that Olivier’s typical face is a “resting bitch face” LOL. Unlike my Inuyasha dolls, this series of characters has noses and mouths that are more pronounced than just lines. That actually made finding a candidate easier.

Out of total coincidence, the doll I ended up using had the petite Made to Move body AND the perfect face! She wasn’t smiling and had short hair that could easily be removed for a reroot:

For the record, I’m not a fan of the flocked doll hair. LOL Anyway, that’s beside the point. Her face sculpt looked perfect, so I knew we had our candidate! And the outfits were a go!
So next up was choosing the proper hair color. I got my hair and the rerooting kit (I’d had some in the past but I got more just in case lol) from TheDollPlanetHair on Etsy. My friend helped me choose the color, and we went with Lemon Blonde. Or was it Lemon Drop? I got both because screens make it hard to tell colors, but in person they look almost identical LOL.
So then I got to work! I’ll spare the details of the rerooting process, except for the fact that, this being my first time doing it, it was certainly a learning curve. I’d watched several videos of people doing reroots, and no one ever plugged every single factory-made hole. So I didn’t, either. I also had to make my own holes (glad I had that extra tool to help with that!) because the flocked areas didn’t have any underneath.

Well, I got that part done, and after the boil wash, it looked way too thin. And because I was afraid the hair could come out during that boil wash, I’d already glued it inside the head. So then I had to go back and add more hair because there were totally bald spots. I did that about two more times in total before (and yes, I added glue inside each time prior to a boil wash) before I was satisfied with the thickness. I was worried it would look completely uneven, but fortunately it seemed to be okay!
Once that was done, I pulled the hair back into a ponytail so I could begin working on the face. I didn’t want to do the face first only to realize I majorly messed up the reroot lol. For the face, the only thing that needed altered was the eyes. I wanted to just paint over the original factory paint, but the eyes were too small for that. Anime eyes, you know? I also wanted to try to use watercolor pencils like I’ve seen so many customizers do. I bought some Mr. Super Clear, a protective breathing mask, and Prismatic watercolor pencils. I started with a practice doll to make sure I knew what I was doing. I sprayed her face with the MSC, then began using the pencils... and the colors just didn’t shine through. At least, not over the original factory paint. I didn’t want to remove that because I can’t draw to save my life. I need a base to trace over. But alas, it wasn’t working. I’m guessing because I didn’t use acetone to remove the original factory paint, which everyone else does prior to spraying the MSC. But no way was I going to take off the original factory paint and start from scratch. So I used my Miroku method and just extended the eyes how they needed to be. I did discover that the watercolor pencils will draw over the top of acrylic paint, so that helped. I had more control with them than a paint brush. I was also able to use a regular pencil for light drawing that I could go over later with paint.
This took some time, and of course there are two eyes, and it never failed - they would never look even lol. Something was always wacky in at least one of them, and I, being a perfectionist with a hint of OCD, was going nuts. But then I remembered that one eye is always covered. So if it’s a little off, it won’t matter too much. Hopefully. So I did the best I could, getting the shapes to match as closely as possible, adding in the two different shades of blue to the iris, then that tiny black dot in the middle and the white light dot, eyelashes, and the unique eyebrows, and I was finally satisfied enough to begin the next step.

That next step was cutting and styling the hair. Olivier has a relatively simple hairstyle. It kind of ends in a curled point, and there is one batch that’s always covering her right eye and draped across her chest. There is an even smaller strand next to her left eye ending at pretty much the same length as the batch. So I sprayed the hair and got it completely soaked, then took my curling iron to the back side to give it a little curl, then curled the batch and strand just a little bit. I think it works!

Once that was finished, it was time for the tops of the boots. I used the same Barbie boots I used for Sango and painted them black, but Olivier’s boots have tongues on the tops of them.
I had the outfits already at this point, and I’d already put Olivier’s on her so I could make sure everything fit okay. Of course, it was perfect! And the details are absolutely incredible. Elenpriv is truly the best!!! Just look at this detail!

The gold rope, the stars on the shoulder pads, the buttons - everything is there, and perfect!!! Her services are worth every penny!
Back to the boots. I’m a fan of nothing being permanent with doll stuff in case A) I change my mind later and B) a better method comes along later so I can easily modify an already existing design. So, remembering how I made Sango’s armor completely out of cardstock, bias tape, and paint, I used that trusty method once again. I sketched out a design on black cardstock, cut and glued a few layers together, then covered them with bias tape and painted the whole thing black. I left a little triangular shaped wedge at the bottom to slide in between the boot and the pant legs. Not perfect, but no way am I gluing anything to that uniform!!!

After that came the medals! I forgot to even mention them to Elenpriv, so that was on me. But I had some ideas on how I could pull them off. My first thought was to attempt to use my new Cricut I’d gotten for Christmas to do it, but I didn’t even know where to begin. And I wanted to make sure to have this project done because in a week or two I’d be dropping it off to my friend’s neighbor, who was staying at her second home in Kansas temporarily, and she would take it back to her. So I took some measurements of the area the medals would go based on this picture:

That’s also a nice picture with a straight-forward view of the medals. So I made them in a few different sizes in Photoshop, printed them out, and then held them against the doll to determine the best candidate. After choosing one, I literally measured every centimeter tick of each piece of those medals I’d printed, determining the length/height/width of each individual color, plus the coin part. I sketched the design out on bias tape, and then I used acrylic paint to bring the colors to life.
Why didn’t I just use what I’d printed? Because A) it was on cardstock, so the details weren’t nearly as sharp, and B) if I’d used photo paper, the entire thing would be way too shiny/unrealistic. So this had to be done by hand.
For the coins, I immediately thought of a hole punch. At least that way I’d get perfect circles! So I took my gold paint and covered a spare area of cardstock in it, then used two different hole punch sizes to create the medals (yes, one is bigger than the other). To add thickness, I stacked and glued two of each size together, then painted the edges gold since that part was white after cutting them out. Then I used a pencil to sketch out the cross design, then lightly went over it with black paint. I love my tiny paint brushes!!!
To attach them to the ribbons, I glued a mini strip to the back of them, then glued that to the back of the cardstock behind the ribbons. I felt that would be easier than trying to glue those tiny edges of the coins and ribbons together. I’m really proud of how these medals turned out.

To attach them to the uniform, I just used some double-sided tape. Because, again, NO glue on that uniform!!!
And with that, the doll was DONE! It was definitely quite a process, especially since I’m not familiar with this show or character, but I’m pleased with how it all turned out! My friend informed me not to share this until after the intended recipient had the dolls in her possession, and now she does. And she approves! YES!!!

The Problem in British Libraries, Archives, and Museums Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the MSc I’m apparently doing in the Sociology of the Lockwood & Co. Universe
As the Problem made itself known, there was most likely a period when many cultural heritage institutions in the UK closed, whether temporarily or permanently, due to hauntings.  Not everything old is a Source, but the nature of collecting items of historical significance and sometimes unclear provenance means that the possibility of a repository owning at least one Source is higher than it would be for, say, the average household.  In a similar vein, not every work of art is a Source, but there are likely those with which an artist, owner, or muse had a strong connection and to which a spirit became tied.
Probably the most well-known piece of legislation regarding the collections in the British Museum is the British Museum Act 1963.  It’s well-known because it sets out the Museum’s famously and contentiously strict rules about deaccessioning (that is, removing items from a museum’s collection altogether, whether to sell, destroy, or repatriate them).  The policy is usually boiled down to the fact that the Museum can’t easily get rid of stuff it owns, no matter how dodgily it came to own said stuff.  The text of the 2018 “British Museum policy: De-accession of objects from the collection” states that
“Under the [British Museum] Act [1963], Trustees do not have the power to sell, exchange, give away or otherwise dispose of any object vested in them and comprised in the Collection unless - (a) the object is a duplicate of another object held in the Collection, or (b) in the opinion of the Trustees the object is unfit to be retained in the Collection and can be disposed of without detriment to the interests of the public or scholars; (c) it has become useless for the purposes of the Museum by reason of damage, physical deterioration, or infestation by destructive organisms.”
To my mind, subsections (b) and (c) above suggest that the deaccessioning policy in the L&Co universe would be more lax than in the real world.  “Unfit to be retained in the Collection” is fairly ambiguous and could certainly describe a Source; and “destructive organisms” would definitely include Visitors.  (I’m so glad I looked up this text because I love the application of that phrase to ghosts, and I also know that in that universe there would be arguments about whether or not it really applied.)  So it’s possible that, given the ability to transport objects safely, the British Museum may have been more open to repatriating items than they currently are.  From events in The Empty Grave I think it’s reasonable to infer that the Problem is limited to Great Britain*, so returning objects to their home countries might have the effect of neutralizing them as Sources.
Of course, there are objects and artworks that museums would be loath to lose.  Those could be kept on display in enclosures made of silver, iron, and silver-glass.  Extra security might be warranted, though, to prevent Sources from being stolen and/or Visitors from being released.  Silver-glass might also affect how colors look; museums and galleries could circumvent this distortion by posting true-color reproductions alongside informational texts.
While the average public library probably wouldn’t experience much trouble with their collections--their materials belong to the institution, not to an individual, and that the items circulate would keep any one person from becoming too attached to them--special libraries, rare book collections, and archives potentially would.  Here, however, some special collections have an advantage.  Beginning in the Middle Ages, when books were more time-consuming and expensive to produce, some institutions, particularly cathedral libraries, kept their collections secure by chaining books to shelves or tables.  If the chains were made of iron, as I think it’s safe to assume they are, these libraries, still in existence in places like Wells Cathedral, would have a built-in defense against Visitors.
And some buildings themselves would guard against hauntings: for example, the Herbarium at Kew Gardens is in a building with iron features, including a spiral staircase and columns.
Whereas works of art known to be Sources could still be viewed safely using established precautions, archival materials suspected of harboring Visitors present additional difficulties.  Archival materials tend to be documents with inherent significance and significance within the context of the rest of the collection; removing a piece of the collection is not ideal.  Add to that the fact that researchers handle documents individually, and that the information that they’re looking for is not always contained in the text of the documents but in the material itself and therefore that transcriptions or other reproductions do not always meet the researcher’s needs.  With all this in mind it’s clear that destroying documentary Sources is not the best option.  That said, I’m not sure what the best option would be.  Run outside in the sunshine, unfold whatever document so all of the writing is visible, and stick it in a silver-glass float-style frame?  It’d keep the interns busy, at least.
As most LAMs tend to be open during the day, when supernatural activity wanes, materials could be handled and viewed relatively safely.  But additional measures could allow them to carry out their missions all the more efficiently.

After the Formula E season ends, Susie has stepped down from her role as CEO of Rokit Venturi Racing as they become Maserati MSC Racing. She’s been in transitional periods in her life before, but something about this one is keeping her up at night.

Susie Wolff was not having a good night. 
She was in the throes of insomnia. She checked her phone after a few hours of fruitlessly trying to sleep. 1:39 a.m. 
She sighed, trying to remember what time she and Toto had to be ready for the crew from Bloomberg to be there in the morning for an interview over breakfast - they were giving a joint interview for the company’s YouTube channel, and then Toto would be jetting off tomorrow to go to the Netherlands for another Grand Prix. She had just gotten back from Las Vegas herself a few days ago, and still hadn’t quite recovered from the time change. 
She’d had an amazing vacation over the F1 summer break with her husband, Toto, and her son, Jack. They’d gone to Porto Cervo, in Sardinia, one of their favorite places in the world. They’d spent plenty of time on the beach, ate their fill of delicious food and drank plenty of amazing wine, went water skiing, snorkeling, hung out on their friend’s yacht, and came back relaxed and ready for the rest of the Formula 1 season. It was two weeks of absolute bliss, but reality had to barge back in eventually, like it always did.
At the end of the Formula E season, Susie had announced that she was stepping down from her role as CEO of the Rokit Venturi Racing team, as they were changing ownership and no longer using Mercedes power units. Due to her connections to Mercedes, and Mercedes selling their Formula E team to McLaren, it just seemed like a good time to back out. But still, she kept wondering if it was actually the right choice. That was one thing on her mind - for the first time in a while, she’d be without a full-time job, other than being a housewife and mom. 
Sure, she had her foundation and nonprofit work, she had the work she did with the FIA, she had occasional speaking engagements, and she had options and offers open to her, but nothing that really grabbed her and gave her the motivation that she’d felt when she’d stepped in to being the Team Principal of Venturi. 
For now, she decided to just take some time to herself. The last time she’d taken time off was when she was pregnant with Jack, but even then, she occasionally did race commentary for Channel 4 in the UK. 
Speaking of Jack, that was the other thing… he had been extra needy that day, extra clingy. Susie found herself feeling “touched out”. The only time she’d been alone that day was when she’d gone to the bathroom, and it left her feeling irritable after she was trying to do something simple earlier that day and Jack practically wouldn’t let go of her leg. It took everything in her to not snap at him, to tell her to leave her alone for a few minutes. That, of course, made her feel guilty because she adored her son, and knew that there would come a day where her son wasn’t quite as keen on spending time with her, so she should enjoy it while she could. But that just compounded the guilt. 
Susie gave up on trying to sleep, getting up from bed. She glanced at the sleeping form of her husband. She envied him, almost - as much pressure and stress as he faced every day, he always seemed to be able to fall asleep quickly and easily. Maybe it was the fact that he traveled so much and went through so many time changes and just had more practice. She touched his shoulder as she walked past, on her way out to the living room. No sense in waking him up with her tossing and turning, and having them both be exhausted tomorrow.
She stepped into the kitchen to take a moment to make some tea - that would help. There was a nice chamomile blend she thought she had, given to her by a dear friend as a gift, but she found that the tin was empty. She’d already boiled the water and poured it into a mug. She snorted in frustration, settling for the not-as-nice bagged decaf green tea that just came from the grocery store. 
“Better than nothing, I guess,” she thought.
She took her cup to the sofa, setting it down on the glass-top coffee table in front of her to let it steep. She gazed out the large windows of their apartment, looking at the streetlights below, and the lights of the boats in Monaco harbor, trying to let her thoughts unravel. After a few minutes, she gave a cursory glance at her phone when she wanted to check the time again. She scrolled through Instagram and Twitter, and noticed that the official Venturi Twitter account was now listed as “Maserati MSG Racing”, and the username was now @Maserati_FE.
Her throat tightened as she scrolled through the company’s twitter timeline, seeing all of the pictures from the last few races of the season, like the Seoul ePrix that she wanted to make it to, but couldn’t. 
She paused on a picture of herself, taken at the London ePrix. She was surrounded by a flurry of red, white, and blue confetti, during the podium ceremony. She was smiling, and she remembered the feeling she had at that moment, like she was on top of the world. She was so proud, so happy.
She’d helped to take the team from the back of the Formula E grid to two-time vice world champions, with a victory in the London ePrix. She’d miss the team so much. She was proud of what she’d accomplished. She was  especially proud of bringing more women into motorsport by hiring them for jobs on the team, creating the most diverse team in Formula E without sacrificing talent. She’d remember that moment forever, even knowing then that she’d be stepping down soon, and that it would be her last race with the team. Her throat started to tighten, but it was the caption attached to the photo that made her start to cry.

It was like there was a pressure valve somewhere inside her that had opened. It didn’t take long before she was crying in earnest. She buried her face in her hands to try and muffle her crying - she didn’t want to wake up Toto and Jack, which would just make her feel more guilty. 
She didn’t know how long she’d been crying, before she heard - 
“Susie…? Are you okay?”
She heard her husband’s voice, and looked up to see him standing in the doorway to the living room. 
He was wearing his boxer briefs and a white t-shirt, and his hair was mussed and wild the way it always was in the mornings. He looked confused, squinting with the small amount of light filtering into the living room from the Monaco skyline. Susie must have woken him up despite her best efforts not to, and just as she thought, it made her feel even more guilty. 
“I’m fine, Toto. I’m sorry if I woke you up. Go back to bed. I’ll be there in a few minutes.” 
Toto was already walking toward the couch, squinting a little.
“What are you doing all alone out here - oh, Susie…”, he said, settling down on the couch next to her. “You’ve been crying. What’s wrong? Please, tell me, leibes.”
“It’s nothing, Toto. Just some insomnia. Please, go back to bed.”
“Susie... please,” he said, looking into her face. She could tell that, even in the limited light coming into the windows, his expression was worried and sad.
He touched her shoulder. “Please, let me in. I want to help.”
“I didn’t mean to wake you, Toto. I’m sorry.” Susie said, wiping her eyes a bit. “I know you have a long weekend ahead, and you need your rest, I don’t want to weigh you down with my problems.”
“Susie... I know you bottle things up like this because you feel you’re a burden, but you could never be. I want to help. I care about you, I love you.” 
Toto looped his arms around her shoulder, guiding his wife to put her head on his chest.
“It makes me more worried to know that you’re having a hard time and want to suffer alone.”
“I know, but -”
“I know you know, but do you understand? I want to help you. Please, let me.”
“But -”
“Susie… you’re the strongest woman I know, but you don’t have to shoulder your own burdens all of the time. It is okay if you’re not okay, it doesn’t make you any less strong. You know that there is strength in letting yourself be vulnerable. Please, liebes, tell me what’s wrong.”
Susie looked up at Toto’s face. His expression just made her start crying all over again. 
Toto ran his hand over his wife’s back, trying to soothe her. 
“Shh, shh, I’ve got you. I’m here for you. I’m not going to go anywhere.”
After a few minutes, her sobbing abated. 
“Give me your hand, my love.” 
Toto took Susie’s left hand in his. The weight of his hand over hers and the weight of his hand on her back, and the solid warmth of his body against hers had a grounding effect on her. She started to calm down a bit.
“That’s it. Breathe with me. Nice and slow. That’s it - long slow breath in… hold it… and out.” Toto said. Susie followed his instructions and started feeling put-together enough to where she could talk.
“I’m sorry. I know. I’ve just got… a lot on my mind.”
She told him everything - about how much she would miss Venturi, about how conflicted she felt about not having her career plans or next move lined up right away, and what that meant for her - her public persona had almost been constructed around the fact that she was a wife, mother, and CEO, but what would taking a step back and just being a wife and mother mean for that? 
And of motherhood - she knew from the beginning that there would be hard days where she wished she could shed that mantle, too, but she adored her son. They both did, but there were days she just wanted some time to herself - would she be able to get that if she wasn’t working and traveling? 
Toto let her talk, not interrupting unless he needed to ask for clarification on something. The whole time, he kept rubbing her back to soothe her, occasionally planting gentle kisses on her forehead. 
When she was done, Toto spoke to her in a quiet, deep voice. He told her what an amazing woman she was, and how that wouldn’t change with her career, or even if she didn’t have one outside the home for a while. 
“I don’t expect you to stay home and be a housewife, either. You know that. I will always support you, no matter what you decide to do. But, it might be a nice break for a while, you know? I don’t want you to jump into something right away just because you feel that you have to. Find something that you believe in, that really inspires you.”
And sure enough, eventually, Susie felt her eyelids growing heavy. Her head started drooping a bit against Toto’s chest. 
“That’s it. You can sleep if you want to. You deserve to rest, however you can. I’m not going anywhere.”
After a few minutes, Toto carefully shifted, checking to see if his wife had truly fallen asleep. She mumbled a bit, but stayed asleep, almost clinging to his chest.
Very carefully, he gathered his wife up in both of his arms and stood up, making sure not to shift her too much as he carried her across the apartment and back into their bedroom. He carefully laid her on her side of the bed, laying her on her side like he knew she usually liked to sleep. She didn’t wake up, somehow, as he pulled the sheets and comforter over her body. He pressed another kiss to her forehead before climbing into bed next to her. 
Toto put his hands around his wife’s waist, snuggling with her. She unconsciously drew closer to him, reaching out for him like it was a reflex, which made Toto’s heart skip a beat. 
He kissed her forehead once again. 
“I love you so much, Susie.” He murmured into the top of her head. “I’ll always be there for you, whenever you need me. Sleep well, meine liebe."

What are your masters in?
This is kinda complicated because Cambridge is a silly place for silly people and so there are several possible answers
The course I applied for was a 4-year combined master's in natural sciences
As you go you specialise into a specific science and I specialised hard into theoretical physics, so by the time of my third and fourth year that was all I was studying
So then I get super depressed, have to take a year out, and when I come back for my second fourth year have to withdraw from the final exams again but am "deemed to have deserved honours" and allowed to graduate as normal
Cambridge, being silly, doesn't actually officially put the subject or a grade or anything on its degrees (only on the full transcripts). Only the name of the degree and if it's honours or not (in the UK honours is actually the norm at academic unis at least, and an "ordinary" degree is generally understood as a sort of soft-fail). At this point I have a BA from my first three years (Cambridge doesn't award any bachelor's degrees other than BA's for silly reasons we'll get to in a sec) and an MSc from my fourth year
Some years later, they let you graduate a second time to turn your BA into an MA. Because this MA doesn't actually require any extra work (only not getting imprisoned, divorced, bankrupt, etc) it's kinda fake, and not including a "Cantab" (from Latin Cantabrigiensis "from Cambridge") after it on a CV to point out that it's not really real would definitely be misleading and potentially fraudulent. Because of this, actual arts master's degrees at Cambridge are MPhil's instead. Technically the MA outranks other master's degrees (except theology, which outranks everything), despite not having required any real work because again, Cambridge is a silly place for silly people
So now I have an MA & MSc, but what are they in?
Well according to the certificate, MA is just in arts; according to the course I applied to (and never transferred off), it's in Natural Sciences; according to what I was actually doing most of the time I was studying for the degree that became this one it's in (Theoretical) Physics; and according to what I was doing in order for it to become a master's it's in Not Getting Imprisoned, Divorced, Bankrupt, etc
Likewise, the MSc is in Science according to the certificate; Natural Sciences according to my external UCAS application; Physics according to my internal fourth year application; (Theoretical) Physics according to what I was actually studying for it; and Nothing(!?) according to my fourth year exams
On my CV I don't list a subject for the MA (Cantab), and put Theoretical Physics for the MSc

My MSC finally got here and goddamn??? I always thought Youtubers were exaggerating the toxicity of it to be extra cautious, but the warnings practically want you in a whole hazmat suit and to do a full chemical rinse afterwards. No wonder this shit is banned in the US!!

I’ve done a lot of body blushing but I’ve never made a tutorial or anything! I can work on that for the future, but the short list would be… 1) Disassemble your doll first (I’ve heard of people not doing this  but… seems incomplete to me?) 2) Remove the seam lines first. This isn’t 100% necessary but it produces a cleaner final product. I like to sand with waterproof automotive sandpaper in water, to keep the dust down. Don’t sand far off of where the seam lines are unless you’re de-yellowing. I usually start around 220 grit and end around 600; some people start and end finer (imho going too fine will make your doll shiny and I don’t think resin as a material needs it but ymmv etc). Don’t grind on everything with 220, just the seam itself. 3M sponges are also good and can be used wet. 3) Base coat all pieces with MSC, even the ones you’re not blushing, so any potential yellowing (of doll or coating) is even. 4) Build color slowly with pastels. Grind the pastels on your 600+ grit sandpaper and apply lightly with a brush. Use a puffer (like a camera lens cleaner) to puff off the extra pastel, reapply, etc. Coat with MSC after a layer or two of blush. I only usually do one blush layer, unless the doll has dark resin that is taking more product to color. Freckles I do as a separate layer. 5) Look at some photos of human bodies to see where to color. I tend do do hands with some blue on the fat of the thumb and any sculpted veins, and then a warm color on fingertips, etc. Knees, collarbones, shading on the chest is all also good.
Not really 6 but I suspend my body pieces with twine and q-tips to spray the MSC, so that as little as possible is being blocked from the spray. I might have photos somewhere.
Also definitely pre-#1, get an appropriate respirator for spraying MSC (or your coating of choice), and wear a mask while sanding and blushing as well (your snot turning colors is a bad sign). The sanding/blushing mask doesn’t need to be medical grade, but a baggy blue style surgical mask is… better than nothing but worse than a real particulate mask. I can dig up some references for that later too but there’s a good resource on DoA.

im currently a 4th year geology major and im thinking about getting my masters in geology, focusing on paleontology! i might go as far as getting a doctorate, but we'll see about that lmao
I majored in environmental science with a concentration in sustainable development (and I did a minor in zoology!)
I'm now doing my MSc in conservation biology!
Congratulations! A lot of my favorite anatomy and geology classes in undergrad were taught by paleontologists. If I could give my very unwarranted two cents, it might even be a more logical choice to go straight into a doctorate program after graduating from uni. Unless you are aware of jobs that you want to do that expressly require a master's, sometimes they aren't worth the extra tuition tbh. but i'm enjoying my masters a lot and i'm getting to meet really cool people for employment and research opportunities! i get the sense that where you choose to study for a masters can make or break the experience in that regard.
