Hello!

My name’s Nick (aka BeardWitch). I’ve been playing Magic since I was in 5th grade, when, during a Boy Scout camping trip, an older guy brought some Onslaught block decks on the bus. When I saw Dragon Tyrant for the first time, I was hooked for life.

I’m the kind of player who straddles the Vorthos & Spike ways of thinking. My joy in the game comes from brewing Commander decks around jank cards, reading the story, & grinding out limited formats. I love looking at cards from a design level- not just gameplay, but how the whole sings together. A beautiful card is a beautiful thing.

I write a bit, too, so this blog is a place for me share deck techs, art critique, & my thoughts on limited. Hope you enjoy what you find here. I’ve never started something like this before, so, here goes!❤️

If you're following the Murders at Karlov Manor storyline, then you should know that Seanan McGuire, the author of the stories, is publishing what she calls "DVD extras" on her blog, an article about each chapter talking about extra tidbits: her writing process, her favourite characters, her relationship to Magic lore, stuff like that.

You should also know that, at least for me who usually reads Magic stories on a cell phone while away from my wifi, that I've found it much easier to check her blog for new articles than anything on Wizard's offical website. Every article has a link to the chapter she's discussing so i can follow it immediately. I only realized Explosions of Genius had been posted when she posted about it.

Best beats story or dumbest?

I’m playing Domri Rade so I can complete Attack with 20 Creatures and Play 3 Haste creatures challenges. I’m going against Liliana, who has done her best to fill her board with 5 creatures, though one cannot block, before I could seal the final damage. They then replace the cannot block creature with a flyer that *can* block and replace another creature with a 10/10 flyer. I have 10 life.

So, figuring I probably have a challenge to play a ton of creatures as well, I just start replacing the weaker ones of my 5 with some of the cards in my hand, which included 4-5 power War Boars from Domri Rade’s ability, with haste… and trample. I attacked, thinking I knew they would block and my creatures would die and I wouldn’t deal any damage but then my board would be clear to play the spell that creates two elves if you have room on the battlefield - their blocking would give me room, and this another spell to go toward whatever challenges I also had.

What I forgot to take into consideration was that Liliana’s creatures, with the exception of the 10/10, had low toughness, just like 2-4. And I had two tramplers, and they had only 3 life. So when they blocked, instead of my creatures dying and me playing my elves and waiting to lose the game, my creatures died at the same time as their trample damage did exactly 3 damage to Liliana and I won. With a 10/10 flying trample creature I couldn’t stop because when I got the choice to pull a Plummet into my hand I selected the heal spell instead to recover toughness for my elf legend.

Phew.

Reading the Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica after spending a few months in the kink community is a trip.

The first clause of that last sentence is revolving in my brain. "Would be illegal if it weren't consensual?" Uh. Yeah, D&D writing staff. That's how you define the crime of sexual assault. Is this supposed to be a disturbing statement?

The ten guilds of Ravnica are supposed to be treated as social and moral equals, and I know they're technically run by a demon cult at the center, but 1. you should see the other nine guys, 2. those other nine guys all have public faces that enamor them to the general populace or else they wouldn't survive, so the nightclubs can't ALL be murder-torture chambers, and most importantly 3. I can't help but think the Rakdos's social role as "hedonistic entertainers" is contributing to your ick just as much as the demon cult part when you say stuff like this.
