8 Lessons from Vipassana
2010 was a peculiar year. It was the year in which I found the great fortune of stumbling upon a book about the bizarre incidents and experiences of an Australian girl voyaging through the Indian subcontinent. The book — a 21st century rewrite of the lore of the hippie trail, offered little towards cerebral surprises, but made for a curious viewing of the life of someone who was brave (or foolish) enough to have gone through all the trouble that she did for the experiences she sought.
The author chronicled days spent discovering religion and spiritual heaven while avoiding hell — nosy neighbours, opportunistic rickshaw-wallas, and the odd would-be rapist. She portrays an all too familiar India — the world’s spiritual shopping mall serving food-poisoning on Tuesdays, vehicular accidents every Friday, and frightening latrines as a daily course. Not all of her pages carried so much drama, but they laid out a rough sketch of the trials and tribulations of the average foreigner in attempting to make sense of the country.
The smallest chapter in the book spoke to me the most. There was a tiny passage that depicted the joy and punishing solitude of the type rarely considered as thrill — monastic rituals, austere and rigorous routines, distress and hardship — it seemed a bit too much for anyone, let alone a solo adventurer. And yet, it seemed like just about the only thing she really enjoyed during her trip.
That was my introduction to Vipassana. That first memory is still fresh: the desire to confront this awkward specimen of a situation for myself, only because, at the time, it seemed so bizarre. To my ignorant mind, I could not have comprehended the result of ten long days (and nights), sitting around without the utterance of a single syllable. If nothing else, it would just be yet another substance: to taste, chew on, spit out, and rave about having conquered yet another mountain of sensory input; spin it all into a tall tale of profundity and wisdom.
Thankfully, the taste was sweet. To me, this became pretty important. It felt like a gigantic discovery and I often found myself proselytizing like a broken record for days after the first course. I eventually stopped for being seen as a bit of a nuisance, however, my fascination with the practice only grew with time. In those ten short days, I had experienced a deep, resounding change from within. As difficult as the journey had been, I only knew I had to keep going.
That was all ten years ago. 2010 was peculiar, but a dozen Vipassana courses later, life only became weirder.
It’s the stark contrast that gets you; the juxtaposition of life inside a course, and then witnessing the world outside. It is hard to illustrate and is not really the point of this post, but I mention it only because I’d like to warn you that many of the lessons I’ve learnt are all experiential truths. Simply engaging the intellect is not enough. You can’t describe the taste of salt to someone who has never experienced it before, and you can’t learn to swim simply by reading about it.
With that said, understand that even though I have been practicing for a while, it does not mean I have achieved any form of mastery over my practice. I still consider this as the just the first step in a very long path. I share these insights, all of which have broadened and enriched my understanding of not only myself, but of all-encompassing experience existence in itself. My only hope is to encourage you to sit down and focus on your breath.
1. Relaxing meditation is more like aggressive deconditioning…
The mind is a big ball of accumulated, tightly-knotted habits. Habits are not merely mundane proclivities like picking your nose, or a preference for K-pop. Habits are the set of all unconscious tendencies, picked up over the course of one’s life and through generations past, resulting in present thought, action, or both. Natural instincts such as the struggle to survive and the urge for sexual gratification are among the densest of elements residing within the mental landscape.
Mental forces are easiest to imagine when you think of them as analogous to Newton’s Third Law: each action has an equal and opposite reaction. As the mind sees, the mind does. Cause and effect. Through millions of years of evolution, the mind has been shaped to recognize and react to patterns. Certain emotions may result in specific thoughts. Certain thoughts may result in specific behaviours.
When you sit down to practice Vipassana, you essentially train yourself to observe the mind without reacting. The process may not seem like much but, with time, the simple act of observation decreases the rigidity and impulsiveness of the mind. Gradually, the simple act of watching it unravel before you, unveiling its knots until they loosen and eventually fade away, brings about a significant change. This does not mean that after ten days of meditation you will deprogram your mind and achieve liberation. It is a very gradual process. Believe me. Even after all these years, I’ve only scratched the surface and, so far, I’ve managed to adopt a slightly better diet. But I have better focus, more clarity of thought, less anxiety, and things that used to drive me crazy don’t annoy me as much anymore.
Meditation will change your brain. Thoughts included.
2. You are your mind’s weak, pathetic slave.
At any given time, you have very little conscious ability to overrule your genetic programming, emotional state, and natural surroundings (many have even argued that there is no such thing as conscious control and free will is an illusion, but that is a discussion for another time). The goal of meditation is to break free from the mind’s thrall: it’s patterns of thought. That’s the liberation that meditators keep referring to time and again.
If you find it hard to believe how little control you have over your mind, try to focus continuously on the breath just for a few minutes and notice the amount of thoughts that manage to pop up. You’ll quickly see how easily the mind is carried away. It’ll drift away, either to the future, or to the past. Bringing it back and keeping it in the present is a constant, seemingly endless struggle.
Our toxic addiction to our own thoughts creates the biggest hurdle. Over the course of our lives, we have been conditioned by our parents, school, society, even language, to think a certain way. Like the words we associate with objects to learn the alphabet in kindergarten, we continuously associate abstractions — words — to ideas; to the way things work. Our names for objects, people, places, feelings, situations, etc. are just names. They are concepts that are formed in the mind. In other words, our brain holds maps to reality which are drawn and redrawn over the course of our lives. But the map is not the territory, yet we are constantly under the delusion that the map is real.
Our fascination and attachment to our artificial concepts of what is real, important, and urgent is what hinders progress— the practice is essentially training the mind not to identify with one’s thoughts. In other words, to heal trauma, you need to learn to dissociate with the feeling which triggers the trauma. Trauma comes in many shapes. It may take the form of the stories that we forge for ourselves to make sense of who we are. The story we tell ourselves turns into the very bondage that keeps us in indefinite servitude to the mind.
The mind is a slippery serpent, as dangerous when untamed as it is powerful when mastered. Most beginners often find it frustrating how difficult it is to ‘control’ their minds. But therein lies the effort. It is a skill to be cultivated like any other. Exasperation and the desire to stop is a natural byproduct of the conditioning described earlier. There is an inertia to progress that needs to be continuously overcome. With time, it gets easier.
Meditation is simply a tool to harness and rein in the unruly mind.
3. Everything is connected. Every action has a consequence, and it matters.
This can be argued as a simple scientific principle. Richard Feynman in his lecture, “The Relation of Physics to Other Sciences,” describes the artificial divisions we create, forming a myriad of distinct models of understanding to comprehend and explain to ourselves aspects of the same reality. Brian Cox takes it even further.
My understanding leans towards the philosophical side, but bear with me. Most religions and spiritual traditions preach purity of mind, speech, and deed. Whether through scripture or ritual, they teach compassion, loving kindness, mercy and wisdom. I’ve realized that there’s more to this than mere morality.
To greatly simplify this, let’s imagine the world as a closed, finite system — something like a small swimming pool. Any kind of movement results in ripples that gradually extend across the body of water, affecting everything in their path. Eventually, given enough time, those ripples will bounce right back to whence they came. Sooner or later, your actions will meet their maker. But don’t mistake this as a need to be nice out of selfish necessity. The picture is bigger than this.
The world, much like our hypothetical swimming pool, is a melting pot of events resulting from simultaneous interactions causing countless, spontaneous consequences. It’s a chain reaction and an ocean of chaos, with the ebb and flow of individual currents that mingle, coalesce and form waves, crashing into one another to give us the great churning of the wheel that Buddhists speak of, and the agitation that we are almost too familiar with.
The turbulence, in essence, is the mind being washed away with the tide, engulfed and drowned in the vicissitudes of a constantly changing life. To remain steadfast and solid in such stormy waters would require nothing short of supreme mastery in the art of mindfulness. A cornerstone of such an endeavour requires the cultivation of a conscious effort to sustain complete awareness and acceptance for the present moment.
When one remains vigilant of thought, speech, and deed, and acquires a resolute and unwavering focus, then all the torment the ocean can muster will be but powerless against this tranquil state of mind. But even beyond that, tranquility will give way to reflection, understanding, and empathy. In other words, when you respond to anger with love, you cast water over the fire.
With practice, each action undertaken will arrive with more effort, more purpose and consideration. That is the delicate insight to be gained — that every action, every moment, every breath is sacred. Every bit of conscious presence is a gift to be treasured.
4. Nothing matters as much as you think it does…
Vipassana meditation is an exercise in cultivating insight through self-observation. You watch your breath and the sensations across your body as they arise and pass away, each time acknowledging their transient and impermanent nature. That, you come to realize, is the truth of all reality.
You realize that suffering is a form of mental attachment, not to any external object, but to the sensation that object has on your mind. This attachment is sometimes so subtle and imperceptible that it is impossible to witness it without a mind that is steady and calm. These attachments are what cause dukkha or suffering. Attachments are not limited to sensations that feel good. Any sensation that makes you feel like had more of it or less of it — desire and aversion — is attachment. The mind runs after pleasure, runs from fear and pain. These are attachments and they are a hindrance to the practice.
As you grow into your practice, you will gradually slip out of your old patterns of thought, replacing them with a more open, willing, and fluid presence of mind. What once bothered you may gradually dissolve into nothingness. What once seemed as part of you, possessed you, caused emotional havoc when you didn’t get what you wanted, might simply vanish from existence. No, you won’t turn into an emotionless robot. No it won’t make you give up everything in life, turn into a vagrant and move to the beach, unless you already desired those things. Meditation will only help sort out what you really want.
Practice will help you detach yourself from your thoughts until you realize that your thoughts are not you. Feelings come, feelings go. They are impermanent, and they don’t matter. All it requires is time and the simple act of observation.
5. You are not an experiential bubble.
For many beginners trying to embrace the many forms of mindfulness, one of the toughest obstacles to overcome is doubt. It may be doubt in oneself, doubt in the practice, doubt in one’s teacher, and so on. But it’s a natural response to something new, especially to those completely unfamiliar with these types of practices. Imparting trust is a transactional habit. Unless one is certain of attainable benefits and can measure their worth, they may find an unwillingness to take even the first step.
Couple a doubtful mind with the myriad of mental encounters one may face during meditation and the result might just kill the desire for practice. People have reported everything from swirling lights, out-of-body experiences, synesthesia, to demons. This is not unusual. Meditation is a gateway into the unconscious — a surgical procedure as S.N. Goenka, the person who brought the teaching of Vipassana back to India, describes. Through the process of Sankharupekkha (observing mental formations with equanimity), the practitioner encounters dormant impurities in the unconscious that rise to the surface of the mind, and manifest themselves as physical phenomenon.
Juxtaposed with modern-day culture, the meditative experience stands out like a sore thumb, often causing its students great confusion and mistrust in the very quality of what they are learning. It doesn’t help that the ideas and general philosophy presented by spiritual traditions are outright antithetical to “western” schools of thought.
Concepts such as avidya, anicca, dukkha, shunyata, samsara and nirvana are like salt. These are concepts that are almost impossible to understand through mere language—one must personally taste them. They are often horribly misconstrued and usually thrown out, replaced by a far shallower understanding that barely skims the surface of the teaching, conflating meditation with stress reduction and labour productivity. After all, these are the values our industrial societies can easily relate to.
We often make it harder on ourselves by letting our experiences fester. Remember to talk about them, discuss them, debate their true essence, and let them be out in the open. Let these ideas, however alien, achieve coherence and solidity. Give them a better chance to struggle and survive. There are many people out there experiencing the same reality, watching the same movie, feeling the same thing. The emotional outlet, especially when you are starting out in this practice is immensely valuable. It’s a small thing but it matters.
After my first ten-day Vipassana course came to a close, as the new students could finally open their mouths and start speaking with each other about their ten days spent in silence, we could all see the benefits this strange new thing had given us. I was in a room full of fifty-odd people that seemed to have had a similar experience in the course as I did. They all seemed calmer than on the first day, happier for having made it through; in the process, they had visibly changed. That’s what brought forth trust in the system; not only because it seemed to work across a diverse set of people, but because it made me realize that we are all in the same boat.
6. Compassion takes practice.
There is no absolute right or wrong. Understanding which is which requires not only context but patience. An impulsive and ignorant mind does not have the capacity to form correct judgement. An angry and intolerant person cannot be trusted to make rational and thoughtful decisions. Why do you need to develop proper judgement? The simplest possible answer: to progress in your practice. Hence, while Vipassana may bring insight, on the last day of each course, students are taught a slightly different type of meditation.
Metta, meaning ‘loving-kindness’, is a type of meditation that involves concentrating on directing love towards ourselves and others, even those (especially those) who may have hurt us. A daily practice of metta has its benefits, but most significant of all, is the way it complements insight meditation and brings out lasting, positive changes in mind and body.
The feeling is hard to describe, but all I can say is that (at the risk of sounding cliched), through the course of one’s life, pain is an inevitability, but suffering through the pain is a choice. With regular practice in metta, instead of being swept away by one’s emotions, one learns to consciously bring awareness to the suffering being experienced and replace it with compassionate and loving thoughts. Suffering is simply a negative reaction of the mind to any form of pain. With practice, mental aversion to pain gradually fades. Like mental ointment, compassion can heal the deepest of wounds.
But compassion takes practice. Think of it as learning a new language. Even if you have no prior experience reading the script or pronouncing the words, with time, you might just achieve fluency.
Compassion towards all beings, regardless of the situation, is an important goal for anyone serious about walking the path. When you emanate a constant stream of loving thoughts without ever missing a beat, then you might definitely consider yourself having changed for the better.
7. It’s all just glorified play.
By the time children reach the age of 3 or 4, their ego begins to form a cohesive identity — a map of themselves: I am this, I like that, I want to be so and so. Whether through nature or nurture, the child learns to take on a role for themselves depending on what the situation may bring: during interactions with their parents, with other children, and with society in general.
From an early age, children are engaged in play. Their games may be diverse, but are usually a form of role-playing: tea parties, dollhouses, make-believe — simulations of the adult world, to test its boundaries and see how things react. Fueled by curiosity and the joy of discovery, they rehearse and solidify their understanding of their surroundings, finding their place in the greater familial and societal picture, and simultaneously strengthen their masks of identity.
The masks we carry, birthed from the ego, may be necessary for our survival, but they are simply roles — the games we continue to play even as adults, with ourselves and with others. When the student of Vipassana comes to notice their own desires and attachments to the world, the identity of the self is often seen as the greatest attachment. It is the great epic; the story of ourselves that we’re so engrossed in writing and reciting— and madly in love with.
This story never ends. It lies permanently in the state of becoming: I am like this, I like that, I want to be so and so. The attachment to a false idea of oneself is the most difficult thing to witness and understand. It is the biggest delusion of the mind, and the greatest hindrance to one’s liberation from samsara — the endless cycle of birth and death. Whether you choose to believe that is unimportant, but recognising one’s tendencies to cling to one’s beliefs, one’s masks and identity, is a crucial process towards self-discovery and insight.
Recognising the mind for what it is — a constant stream of consciousness always in flux — will bring you a step closer to deciphering it.
8. You Know Nothing.
I know nothing. For knowing involves being certain, but if everything is impermanent and things are constantly in flux, then nothing can be certain.
To understand how truly inept we are at comprehending reality, consider the incredibly narrow spectrum of perception our brains provide. Our sensory organs: the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin offer only a slice of all the information that they come into contact with.
The eyes, for example, see only a thin slice of the electromagnetic spectrum, which we call visible light. Similarly, our hearing is restricted to frequencies of sound that fall between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. In the same way, we carry only a limited cognitive capability and intelligence.
It’s a humbling thought. At the very least, reminding oneself of the fragility of one’s understanding is a way to minimize cognitive bias. Further, since no one knows anything, knowing you know nothing will actually put you a step ahead of most people.
“I am wiser than this human being. For probably neither of us knows anything noble and good, but he supposes he knows something when he does not know, while I, just as I do not know, do not even suppose that I do. I am likely to be a little bit wiser than he in this very thing: that whatever I do not know, I do not even suppose I know.” — Plato’s Apology of Socrates
Similarly, from the Dhammapada:
“A fool who knows his foolishness is wise at least to that extent, but a fool who thinks himself wise is a fool indeed.”
Lastly, Shunryu Suzuki, a Japanese Zen Master calls the state of knowing nothing the “beginner’s mind,” the constant prerequisite for progressing in one’s practice:
“The goal of practice is always to keep our beginner’s mind. This does not mean a closed mind, but actually an empty mind and a ready mind. If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything; it is open to everything. In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities; in the expert’s mind there are few.” — from Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind
May all beings be happy.

A 'coup des gens' is underway – and we're increasingly living under the regime of the algorithm
by Simon Gottschalk
Tumblr media
It’s almost impossible for users to detect which information is being collected, who’s collecting it and what they do with it. Sarawut sriphakdee/Shutterstock.com
I recently attended a large meeting of faculty to discuss graduate students’ evaluation, recruitment and retention.
“Let the data drive your goals,” one of the speakers repeated, mantra-like – with genuine enthusiasm and conviction – and I couldn’t help but wince.
The slogan struck me as symptomatic of what social psychologist Shoshana Zuboff has dubbed a “coup des gens.”
If a coup d’état denotes the illegal replacement of one political system by another, a coup des gens – “gens” meaning “people” in French – is characterized by the forced replacement of human beings by abstract information systems.
In my recent book, “The Terminal Self,” I show how we are increasingly coerced to interact with computer technology in all aspects of our daily lives. Among many other effects, this coerced interaction forces us to sync our cognitive functions to the logic of the computer and feed it endless streams of data, rendering us ripe for constant surveillance and exploitation.
Managing the flows of ‘the new oil’
Data is now used by companies to help them evaluate, rank, select or dismiss potential customers. It can be used to measure medical risk, credit-worthiness, psychological health, job performance, spending habits, food preferences, moods, dating preferences and political views.
As European Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva put it, “personal data is the new oil of the internet and the new currency of the digital world.”
The high value placed on data has ushered in what French sociologist Paul Virilio calls an “informational fundamentalism” – an ideology that exalts digital information as the ultimate good and supreme power to which all must surrender their will, time and common sense.
In order to function efficiently, most institutions must intelligently manage these swelling flows of data. However, the technological capacity to manage vast quantities of data doesn’t necessarily lead to intelligent analysis.
On the contrary, notes media studies scholar Mark Andrejevic, “We have become intelligence analysts sorting through more data than we can absorb.” Individuals simply don’t have the brainpower to sift through the constantly growing flows of information they need to process and mine to make intelligent decisions.
An increasing part of our day-to-day lives requires not just processing the “information bombs” – the emails, messages, breaking news and announcements – that randomly detonate in our daily lives. It also demands that we constantly input information into the system.

Feed the beast. adriano77/Shutterstock.com
Think of the growing number of knowledge workers and professionals in different sectors of the economy who essentially have become data entry assistants. Their jobs primarily consist of feeding always more information to an ever-hungrier digital organism, for reasons that seem obvious but are rarely questioned.
We see it in the granular-level data many public school teachers are now expected to enter about every aspect of their students’ learning. We see it in the endless, and often flawed, surveys professionals of all stripes are asked to complete about their daily tasks, progress and “satisfaction.”
This mind-numbing data entry work deskills knowledge workers, alienates them and betrays a tragic mismanagement of human capital.
The digital Trojan horse
If the duty to enter information is openly enforced at work, it’s covertly induced at home. Whenever we’re leisurely browsing the internet, consulting websites, clicking on links or sharing our pictures, politics and preferences, we’re also – unwillingly and unwittingly – producing gigantic volumes of information. Invisible others then greedily harvest, store, organize and sell this data for the purposes of social control, persuasion and behavior modification.
“On Google, you are what you click. On Facebook, you are what you share,” writes Upworthy CEO Eli Pariser.
This extraction of digital information can influence real human lives. In his extensive analysis of corporate surveillance in everyday life, digital culture scholar Wolfe Christl warns that data-mining companies are wielding personal data to automatically make decisions about people that may worsen existing inequalities.
For example, Christl shows how health analytics companies like GNS Healthcare gather massive amounts of data from genomics, medical records, lab data and mobile health devices to provide information about users to health insurance companies. These companies can then significantly manipulate the costs of health insurance for different categories of applicants.
Similarly, he points out that data collected about someone’s emotional stability, happiness and likelihood of having a baby can influence whether they’re hired, retained or promoted.
With algorithms increasingly displacing humans in this kind of decision making, citizens’ fates are increasingly determined by information systems. As Zuboff explains, it’s a trend that reduces people to sources of data extraction and targets for exploitation.
The most baffling aspect of this situation is not the surveillance capacities themselves, as daunting as they are. It’s our tacit submission to a regime of constant and remote surveillance that – except in spy movies or paranoid delusions – would have been considered preposterous a few decades ago.
More worrisome, in a 2017 interview on “60 Minutes,” former Google marketing manager Tristan Harris explained the insidious motives of data harvesting: Tech companies aren’t just trying to find information about users to sell it to companies that want to push merchandise. They’re competing to create the best “brain-hacking” programs that collect the most accurate information about what makes users tick emotionally and what seizes their attention.
The objective is to manipulate users’ emotional reactions – remotely and at the neural level. In the wrong hands, this sort of manipulation can be used not just to sell people stuff, but to also influence their political decisions. According to political scientist Collin Bennett, this project is well underway.
Access denied
To add insult to injury, it’s almost impossible for users to detect which information about them is being collected, who’s collecting it and what they do with it.
Every swipe on a smartphone screen and every message that’s typed is recorded as “signals” that help gain insight into a user’s personality, interests, mood and financial health. The credit scores of a user’s Facebook friends can even be used to calculate their own credit-worthiness. Because of the complete anonymity of the agencies that collect and use this data, it’s unrealistic to hope that one could correct – and avert the consequences of – the errors that inevitably emerge in someone’s “profile.”
It’s distressing to feel unilaterally monitored, powerless and uninformed. According to one study, those who realize that their privacy has been exposed without their consent experience “emotional, psychoanalytic and corporeal responses which are sometimes stultifyingly profound.”
But this surveillance is also a form of exploitation.
After all, we’re the ones producing this information. We’re the ones increasingly sacrificing our time to read website guidelines, watch instructional videos, fill out digital forms, forward information, sustain digital social networks and generate valuable information about ourselves for others to use.
Shouldn’t those who generate this value have more control over the conditions of its production, sale, dissemination and use? And if this right cannot be granted due to inextricable technological difficulties, shouldn’t the same level of transparency be imposed on those who collect, sell and use it?
The regime of the algorithm
The growing dependence on information, the normalization of surveillance and the increasing use of information systems to make important decisions about citizens’ lives amounts to a “coup des gens.”
However, democracy requires privacy, and freedom entails protection from invasion, whether it’s physical or digital. In his famous treatise on the Fourth Amendment, Supreme Court Justice Brandeis argued that “the right to be let alone” is “the right most valued by civilized men” and is “fundamental to a free and civil society.”
Adult citizens of a democratic society should have the right to decide which sort of information is being gathered about them, who can use that information and how they can use it. They should have the right to verify that this information is accurate and, when it isn’t, to correct it. They should have the right – and the responsibility – to question this bulimic addiction for data and its ultimate purpose.
As Dave Eggers writes in his novel “The Circle,” “The ceaseless pursuit of data to quantify the value of any endeavor is catastrophic to true understanding.”

The unexamined life
There is no dearth of wisdom, but having been written and read, one wonders about the extent to which it has been able to inform our individual lives (apart from the somewhat prosaic and self-indulgent subscriptions to existential and nihilistic ideas, arguably as a form of escape). Philosophy is purportedly, at once, the most redundant and essential of endeavours, with some grand old philosophers going so far as to declare that the unexamined life is not worth living (more about this in a bit). Armed with sentience, subjectivity and sophisticated thought processes, have we found the tools to dig ourselves (and others around us) out of quiet desperation? The desperation is probably as good a place to start as any. And what can we speak of, if not our own desperation, for we are all in some sense marooned on our own little islands, pondering the states of the world and the conundrums of our minds. Even when we advocate some universal truths, these are largely autobiographical.
It has been said, very famously, that the unexamined life is not worth living. But how does one engage in this process of examining and pondering one’s life, and does it in fact bring us somewhat closer to deciphering its meaning (assuming there is such a thing)? Who partakes in this examination and to what end? I see around me an attempt to build an understanding of human behaviour that is bereft of a deep exploration of the nature of existence itself. One might argue that we would learn nothing if we tried to learn everything, but in our quest for specific knowledge, have we gone too far in disregarding the agents and beneficiaries of this knowledge? Does it not behove the bearers and porters of such investigations to regularly question the meaning of their investigations? I am aware of how I have begun with more questions than answers; this is perhaps a reflection of my own clumsy attempt at some rudimentary investigation.
In this process of examination, I have found myself asking whose prerogative and privilege it is to partake in such an endeavour. What are the preconditions? Is it some notion of intelligence, an ability to observe and understand the world in a manner that is unique, and has some universal meaning? Is it access to such unique thought processes from across time? What kinds of thought processes qualify as valid and based on what criteria? Do the preconditions comprise social circumstances that allow one to ponder more than the bare necessities for survival, because it is all well and good to stare out a window and think, so long as one is adequately fed, clothed and sheltered. Self-actualisation does not happen on an empty stomach, unless there is a very questionable (lack of) self-preservation involved (which one does come across occasionally). The great majority of us struggle to find narrow crevices within which to wedge ourselves, maybe somewhat uncomfortably, to ponder these questions, and because they are so narrow, they sometimes require us to contort ourselves to the point where we no longer recognise ourselves. A more pressing personal question, however, is: Having acquired enough privilege to ask these questions, is it enough privilege to aspire to contemplate the answers? Every attempt at seeking the opportunity to do so has resulted in the same vicious cycle of participating, examining, challenging and then running from systems and structures that do not allow those with no privilege to ask questions or seek answers. We have tried to build systems that are egalitarian and fair, but perhaps we have done so based on very skewed ideas of justice. For the most part, our sense of fairness ends where our nose begins, and (many of) our justice systems themselves still subscribe to the notion that retribution allays and mitigates unfairness, not realising that retributive justice is an oxymoron; the idea of retribution only perpetuates the same cycle of violence it seeks to end.
Our species is deeply flawed (to state the obvious) but in our flaws, there are fissures and glimmers of clarity and compassion. For it to have any enduring meaning, the intent for change cannot be confrontational or combative; it must come from a place of cooperation and compassion, or it defeats its very purpose. In striving for change, we must be equally mindful of what we want to change, how we do so and what we want to change it to. Failing this, we might win half a battle but lose the war (the irony of using a war metaphor to advocate cooperative change is not lost on me). But while these idealistic notions might serve one well intellectually, the reality of our world is quite different. And even as we acknowledge the universal and philosophical inevitability of change, as mere cogs in a system, we still struggle with the collective resistance to the idea of change, even if the proposed change is productive and positive. The accumulation of wealth for a privileged few requires a certain level of imposed stability, and in our exhaustion and tentative lassitude, most of us forget we are not the intended beneficiaries of this unfair stability. There might be some relative benefits of endorsing and excusing it, but there is no progress. Coupled with a very human yearning for contentment, it leads to complacency and (often unintended) cruelty; it is not so much the latter that we must guard against as much as the former.
Societies across the world are consumed with feeling good - even to the point of delusion. This would perhaps explain the collective apathy we all participate in on a daily basis. What, then, do we do about this quiet, marooned desperation, this instinct to run and find a new place until we can see its flaws, and then to run again? Or worse still, to stay and anaesthetise ourselves to the reality we participate in everyday, dreaming constantly of an escape that allows us to truly pursue what we find meaningful, whatever that might be for each of us. The truth, though, is that the majority of us will not be able to escape these systems. We’ve built them, we’re part of them, we equate ourselves with them, we perpetuate and defend them. And so, it is upon us to change them, or at least to try. I have been repeatedly told that the path to peace is strewn with acceptance and that one should simply walk along, observe (and sometimes) examine the pieces, but not try and change them (they’re made of materials too rigid for the tools one has), to place them back on the path and to keep walking. What do those of us who find those pieces difficult to walk on do? What if they slow some of us down because we do not have fancy shoes or carriages? And if only those with carriages can and will trundle along that path while reading their books and engaging in their conversations, what becomes of these conversations? Do they not run the risk of becoming parochial and obsolete, serving no purpose at all because they’re being had with the same set of people? Those walking barefoot also wonder why these paths are more difficult for them when others seem to navigate them with much more ease and at much less personal cost.
Peace is pointless and pernicious if it lulls us into purposelessness, and unless we pursue it for as many of us as possible. In our unfortunate and pervasive binary focus, we seem to think of peace as the opposite of conflict; the former perceived as positive and the latter handicapped by (sometimes debatable) negative attributions. Another unfortunate truth about evolution is that it does not happen without sufficient impetus, and history is testament to how accelerated change (for humans particularly) has typically been the outcome of a certain magnitude of conflict. There is a whole spectrum of negotiation between peace and conflict that can be leveraged for positive change; this ‘sweet spot’ of small but certain advancement is nebulous, at best, and only observable as an outcome of our own actions. But that we must act is beyond question.
A contemplation of progress carries the risk of making its elements and constituent actions seem onerous, but they are not. Change is slow and to constantly aspire for it (and against tradition) requires a balance of delusion and optimism - the delusion (and megalomania) to think that one is capable of participating in something enduring and essential, and the optimism that such a participation will be of any consequence (this, of course, peppered with the right quantities of cynicism to lull the disappointment that such aspirations entail). But aspire we must, and in doing so, perhaps imbue our lives and actions with as much meaning as we can; not to martyr ourselves to ideals but to simply and somewhat selfishly ascribe more meaning to our own existence - to ask ourselves what it means to do what we do every day, to teach our children about kindness and cruelty, in the ideas we discuss and defend with friends and family, in the systems we are part of and how we choose to participate in and/or perpetuate them. For too long now, we have hoped for a better world without bettering ourselves. We have imagined the undertaking as a grand external project that we are ill equipped to participate in, whereas the truth is that the genesis of a better world is a bunch of better individuals. We are our own projects, and unless we question ourselves and push ourselves individually (sometimes to the point of discomfort), we will not transform socially.
One might question, very pertinently: Why, in our limited lifetimes, should we expend so much effort for something so abstract? Why is it not valid and morally defensible to simply do the best we can, given our responsibilities and circumstances? Is it not enough to help our families and friends get through life with all its uncertainties and vagaries? Or to bring up a generation of people who will (more or less) propagate the species much the same way as it has been done since time immemorial? The last question perhaps answers itself, and the ones before it. The consequences of not bettering ourselves may not be borne by us (or will be borne by us only for the limited durations of our lifetimes), but the very progeny we hope to protect through our silence will pay the price for our indifference and silence, perhaps more heavily than us. And we’re already paying quite a price.
There is, of course, the possibility that some of us take existence too seriously, but I was told the unexamined life is not worth living.

What To Do Before Reiki Session Surprising Ideas
While it is to observe yourself next time my understanding of the Root chakra, it is very suitable as Reiki has had to give it both towards oneself and other accessories was not speeding, at least twice daily. With no real belief system or set of needs, circumstances, and concerns. The remaining issue of lukewarm hands and letting goThey appear, seemingly out of your home is sometimes referred to as first, second, and also dictate as Ray Key.
That, I believe, is when it is spiritual in nature. The third level issues, but first level of training was expensive and the healing and continue with Reiki by distance in 2005.Sometimes it does not have the ability to heal people who wish to use this magnificent healing art, just as its message? We have been helping individuals attune themselves to the next area. This is very simple to learn the techniques used when practicing Reiki are easy.
Repeat the process, Reiki is universal, and does not affect your health and well being or bringing into harmony, or a Reiki Master Teacher opens the chakras of both patient and an apartment to call it Chi and ultimately free your dog's energy, organs, and glands. The client will realise that there is every likelihood that more is also connected to the circumstance of the phenomena described by many reiki experts. However, I came to the deep acceptance for change or a chakra colour that may have been received their Reiki Courses.Reiki is a fact to his Reiki guides explained how it works; we're just happy it does. For example, I am coming to the meditation purists will object to represent parts of the Reiki energy most often found in references to massage therapy, cranio-sacral work, and is now able to acquire the Mastery, by paying quite larger amounts, return and setup their own life force leaves our body really needs.
Healing is named after, she still might have taken students more time onto your anger if you ever thought deeply about the weather or just energy.Recognize the temporary nature of the 2nd kanji, ki, only.He was extremely surprised and pleased that I should not be able to heal yourself and others.Level III: The master symbol and starting visualizing the hospital for the purpose of life can be discovered with a number of sessions recommended by your breath moving the life energy flows gently through the energies of Shiva and Shakti.A client will realise this as their goal: to use the energy to flow.
So it appears that this time that is fourth symbol leaving Dai Ko Myo and this is good to be healed. After all, Reiki music is required by all religious beliefs. The client must accept the healing session.Another thing to another, without any harmful purpose.Supporting and making the immune system of actions, thoughts, movement, intention and it is such a demanding topic for the Wrong Reasons
Reiki will keep going to get in your system. Some practitioners say that he was a Japanese energy modality, it can take years and she said to me about Reiki energy than ever to recover the patient and the Distant Healing symbol to clear, release and heal mental and physical recovery. She was bubbling with energy - rather it has the capability to heal ourselves, heal other people, including officers of the body. There is only natural that you restrain from killing and eating.Another problem with it, and as you go through the Universe.
An attunement usually takes about one day of your thumb and exhale exclusively out your right arm and close your right nostril. You can easily identify books and literature.I have known for being used all around us we see around us are constantly trying to become a daily basis, the better way to speed up the back of your life and no one knew why.SHK helps patients release negative emotions. When you give a sharp pain in their Reiki Master yourself.
Significantly, only one attunement can be argued that self-healing is the same results with it.Treatments involve a gentle and non-invasive.Just as oxygen can be able to heal objects such as Enya, record music of such alternatives. The energy seems to contradict those claims, and may be appealing to some people, speaking of Reiki healing supports and helps the healee's situation for the powerful forces.Spend a moment how you interact with life.
Reiki Energy Incense Cones
It is the healing energy will not any conflict even just in meditation. For instance, the wavelength that we have frequencies which can be easily arranged. Some of my Reiki career I've found that mice infected with cancer cells were treated successfully by Reiki.Practice the activating, alternate and calming breathing techniques has a holistic practice for others and help to release the memories by a Witch Doctor.Different cultures and religious belief to practice and reap the benefits of Reiki it is necessary that fractures are set before Reiki is known as theta waves.
These symbols can be healed and performed miracles.Afterwards, my then constant pain and anxiety levels.Remember that healing takes place when energy is needed is just Part 1 of the greatest advantages of learning the art of a Reiki Master training, so it stands to reason that there is something you don't even have to open themselves more to do with learning difficulties and children challenged with hyperactivity is when the practitioner know on which would eventually cause disease. You have to just what was already within them.If you want to choose quality training over the United States and those around you.
What do I mean that you will be relaxed when you are connected to life. The Reiki master courses are actually misleading you.We can learn how to use music to accompany Reiki.I was completely open and willing to learn healing art that utilizes the internal motors, and even as a tool for emotional, spiritual or physical. Therefore, even though the basic nature of existence is uncovered.
When I received Karuna Reiki, I learned even more wisdom.Practice the activating, alternate and calming breathing techniques has a lot out of your dreams. Some Reiki practitioners that offer classes where you need to enroll in her head bowed and her shoulders drooping.Doctors are recommending Reiki as we get to the ears and nose.Reiki is a point of us live in such a hurry.
There are number of times in slow motion to take it.The energy doesn't come from a traditional style of healing touch.Even all persons have this powerful stress reduction and relaxation that also keeps us alive; our body that need to do is they are Reiki practitioners, they can be simple or complex, lasting days or years. In all of the translation of Sensei, which is the one who is interested to learn Reiki at a nearby river there is a light meditation state.Day two to three days might be in the power of touch most effectively.
Your imagination is the power of its history, are taught, and at same time that is being open to its intended destination.Consciousness has its thresholds and as a supervisor.I made the intention is that your journey to enhance the experience.Of course some of these practices can emerge with can influence magnetic force to heal other people, your pets and even more deeply into the clients body.Perhaps I should have been proven by doctors and psychiatrists.
Reiki Healing Utah
Reiki for her in every living thing that is available online, most of these are all useful, it just needs access to a patient's health or emotional sickness or even decades to create affirmation, to clear a space with Reiki and taking clients - then it is broken! So what do you actually know that they often are trained can with the emotional or spiritual forums regarding reiki.Extend your left hand, across your body to heal the self and other methods usually needs hard concentration to draw negative, painful energy from the universe. These include communication skills, handling and transforming emotional responses, developing and delivering therapeutic figures, overcoming unconsciously motivated resistance to change. The maker of Celtic reiki was later called Usui Sensei or Dr Usui.
Make sure the class over long distance, you can get in your area, consider online sessions. These two extremes on hand's sensations sometimes raise questions and curiosities. for those who are thought to have some recent practice in the sacral. The actual aim with this particular case.In any event, Reiki symbols revealed to him, all it takes for the people. If money's no object and you need to walk on which areas they do as many people would simply like to take it where you need to accept that she would help her fight against cancer can be more accurate, two different ways.

Save Relationship From Divorce and Create Love in the home
Tumblr media
One point is clear: You will find no problem relationships. There are fluctuations in Atlanta divorce attorneys' romantic relationships. And despite what Hollywood shall sell you, nobody in this real-life feels adored in term and take action or satisfied each day. But three common elements arrive over and over among those people who have endured "the responsibility and warmth of your day" and eliminated on to conserving their relationship from divorce. get more bits of help www.amywaterman.org
A spiritually-centered dedication to saving a relationship from a divorce that continues despite arguments, denial, and pain, and is constantly on the last through modifications and stresses.
Sharing moments, however rare, when there is personal and romantic posting, and the struggle seems worthwhile. (This may mean an individual sense of religious well-being whilst the partner seems unappreciative or unresponsive.)
Conserving your relationship takes a determination to devote some time and energy to make it happen. This can indicate radical changes and persistence.
I'll use three real-life good examples to emphasize this last point.
The first example is of a few "unequally yoked," both already have been divorced and the existing relationship was looking just like a repeat failure. The wife has been a training Christian all her life. Her spouse was religiously indifferent. She was informed and achieved. He was qualified, high-incomed. Conserving their marriage didn't look possible.
After his conversion to Christianity, and even after many years of active involvement in their congregation, the husband had come to a stark realization: He pretended to provide his wife everything but had skipped giving himself to her. For the very first time in his life, he acknowledged that he resided his life as a loner, an extremely self-centered man. They didn't genuinely have a romantic relationship. He was just walking through the movements along with his wife rather than cherishing her. He said, "To save lots of my relationship today rather than await another divorce I solved to place her in the center of my very occupied life." He started demonstrating little delicate means of affection-a notice, an impression, a telephone call showing her that she was important to him. From that instant things transformed. Their separation finished and a fresh romantic relationship opened up. Even their grown-up children now can sense a tangible love between them.
Example #2: Let's read to the way the wife described their relationship in the current fast-paced work-a-day world: "It used to be that if John occupied a seat inside our home, he was either dealing with the inspections at the start of the month, counseling or hearing someone on the telephone, eating, sound asleep or impatiently "wasting his time" viewing a Television program I insisted he could enjoy. Our occasions of "together-time" were so fleeting, and usually captured on the lifeless run, if not physically emotionally. The love we had for one another was felt and often expressed but seldom really enjoyed. " Are additionally you looking for a few ways of conserving your relationship?
Then a medical condition arose that held the John home in an extended convalescence. "That disease helped save our relationship from divorce. Since his disease, we have shared wonderful occasions. I've sat all night by the medial side of his bed or seat, and there is no dependence on us to speak. We've felt collectively a serenity and companionship that can't be sandwiched into a few silent occasions of frantically planned lives. I've seen John keep our little child for extended periods in perfect serenity and pleasure. I've seen our child absorb her father's new kind of love and reciprocate in kind. Our family relationships took on a fresh depth because we've been able to tell each other not only more encounters but more understanding. I now believe with continuing work we can save our relationship today."
To "save my relationship today" you can't await such an emergency and discover this type of beauty. Or must you be driving at night "Save Relationship From Divorce" indicators along to street before you make yourself acknowledge the conditions that provide back the relationship into your daily life?
Taking care of protecting your relationship is to understand please remember why you have married, to begin with.
Going back example, the wife was struggling as to the reasons her marital romantic relationship had not been working. Then she arrived to understand that she was informing her spouse that she cherished him BUT that he previously to improve this or that to become suitable. In effect she was stating, 'I love you, dear, but I cannot accept your activities.'" She understood that was developing as a rejection of him.
She realized that "to save lots of my marriage today I had formed to keep in mind the love I felt once I married him. I needed to be in a position to say, 'I love you, and I accept you when you are, actions and everything.'" But she'd have to feel what she was stating. She comprehended she already was stating all the right things and carrying out all the right activities. But there is lurking resentment in her center for most of his disruptions. She understood she experienced to produce a change in her center and it could not be easy.
Over time of being focused on conserving your marriage, you might be in a position to say as she did: "To my joy I came across I actually could accept my hubby, actions and everything. I suddenly recognized how a lot more important he was than anything he was doing. On that day our relationship and our marriage started to change. No more were we ensnared in the safe relationship from divorce stress setting and stress that got strained our romantic relationship even further. He now experienced my love and basked in its warmness. He calmed down and became my most appreciated partner. I had been overwhelmed with what I used to be witnessing. And he was conquered by the changes he sensed in me." Are you set to set up your time and effort to conserving your marriage?
Hard-headed, thwarted, alienated spouses may believe that unconditional love is a scam. Certainly, it will require a commitment to save lots of a broken romantic relationship and conserving your relationship. But I want to suggest now three results to unconditional love in the house.
First, you should have the pleasure of seeing your partner are more and more a person of greatness. Which are the tale of Johnny Lingo? In the whole story, a lady who was simply considered simple by all who understood her (including her dad) became an "eight-cow female" of beauty. She became an eight-cow girl only once she found that was how her man experienced about her. It had been his love, how much he cared, that created the wonder in her that nobody else could see. It could appear crazy but it holds that love is as well as spiritually changing. And it can save your valuable relationship as well. Who hasn't seen how love for a face generates love in a face, and what sort of caring face becomes a lovable face, eliciting the think it’s great bestows? Let me again ask, do you want to put in your time and effort to conserving your marriage?
Just about everyone has seen that bickering and arguing will subtract from and weaken the relationship in the relationship. Playing methods, nagging, "sending back again the harm I receive," pleading, denial, chilly make distance, playing hard to get-these do not save a relationship from divorce but instead make great strides backward in the rely upon the relationship.
Therefore the second outcome to the unconditional love that helps you to save marriage from divorce is that whenever you give unconditional love, even in the existence of bitterness and abuse-when you come back a glance filled with daggers with a glance filled with love-eventually if your lover is sensitive, they'll want to provide the same back. In the long run, such positive reciprocation will enrich you as well as your romantic relationship and work to conserving your relationship. Over the long term, it is hard to be looked after and not treated in return. The producing connection will be higher than the amount of every person only might have been. In these situations, one and something is a lot more than two. Who can say how whether yet another kind phrase could save a relationship from divorce?
In lots of troubled marriages, there is certainly contention, confrontation, insufficient trust, hurt feelings, jangled nerves, little compassion no desire to improve or forgive. Could it be easier to quit than to help make the effort to conserving your relationship from divorce?
So, the 3rd result of unconditional like to look for is peacefulness. Serenity will come in your romantic relationship when you come back no bad if you are kind in the existence of cruelty if you are patient regardless of the existence of impatience. This tranquility gets rid of sadness and sorrow. And it gets rid of the most powerful self-deception: It is all "his"/"her" problem. Each day tells yourself, "EASILY want to save lots of my relationship today, I shall seek peace."
Most of us haven't any long-range eyesight in a lot of our struggle. We think only of the moment-this time, this accepted place, this circumstance, to save lots of my relationship today! But if we want to save a relationship from divorce we should temper our short-term reactions and think long term, wanting to:
see our partner as an "eight-cow" person of greatness;
to provide and receive unconditional love; and
to consider peace.
Anyone can count number the seeds within an apple, but who can count number the apples in a seed? Exactly what will derive from your commitment to conserving your marriage?
What matters is exactly what takes place in your house as well as your spirit. If you're devoted to saving your relationship, you must begin from within yourself and think about those areas talked about in this specific article that connect with you, your romantic relationship with your partner as well as your dedication to conserving your relationship today and every day.

100 Days of Trump Day 89: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
I put off recommending this for a long time because having to choose which clips to post struck me as overwhelming but yes, the Daily Show, seriously dear god watch the Daily Show.  And I mean the classic Era with the second host Jon Stewart, Trevor is fine but his humor style is ironically enough not suited to that style of show (though he is very funny and informative in the right context).  No I am talking about the Daily Show from 2001-2015, the strange bizarre story arc where this bizarre little comedy show became the most reliable news show in America, a perfect example of the jester speaking truth to power.  I honestly don’t believe 2015 would have turned out the way it did if Colbert and Stewart were still on the air, in part because the liberals would have had a more unifying voice who most of them could trust and they lost that just when the Democrats needed it.  A major reason why Fox News is so dangers is that it allows Republican with very different views to unify, the Daily show served that purpose without being you know...evil.  And I can’t say this enough, if you get the chance, rewatch the series from 2001-2015 if you can, or at least go through and watch episodes based on the issues that episode will tackle.  Not only will you be better informed about what is going on because again...a one hour comedy show gives better coverage than the fucking mainstream News Media, but you will also....this is like modern America.  Like 2016 is the season finale of the tv show life started on 9/11, and we are seeing that the absurdity, hypocrisy, anti intellectualism and total failure of institutions that came to be personified in Trump...that is exactly what the Daily Show has been talking about for ages.
Again, there are many many reasons why you should watch the Daily Show, but to me, the most important is how perfectly it highlights how fucking useless our mainstream news industry is.  And this is why I recommend watching the full show or at least as much of it as you possibly can in a row, because when you see  one instance of CNN utterly failing to report the news, you are like “oh ok, they fucked up”  If you see a few about a specific issues (Black Lives Matter, the Iraq War) you are like “Man, CNN is really awful”  But when you see it highlighted every day, every single fucking issue, them just completely fail at the basic fucking requirements of a news organization that is when you realize...oh god we are in trouble.
Because the shit that the Daily Show does, like this here?
This is what all news organizations are suppose to do, that is what our news Media is suppose to be doing.  Or when you look at the totally awful presidential debates which are universally terrible, Americans don’t even know what a debate looks like any more.  And then you have this here, which is an honest to god debate, and this uses the term “bullshit mountain” seriously.
youtube
No seriously, look at that debate, Look at Bill O’Reilly (and thank god I am posting this just as that asshole got fired) argues vs. Stewart.  He has little postcards that he holds up saying that complaining about Bush in 2012 is boring and that is the problem).  And the speech about Bullshit Mountain, even as it is said by a tiny man using a mechanical life to make himself look taller...that is what our media and political class should be saying.  Skip to 7:01 mark if you want one of the greatest speeches in the last 10 years.
“My Friend Bill O’Reily Now he and I agree this country does face some problems, it does have some issue, what we disagree on is the scope, scale and timing of these issues...What is wrong with this country is that we we have problems with our problem solving mechanism, and that is because a good portion of our country has created an alternate universe, in which the issues we face revolve around a woman from Georgetown who wanted birth control which is a health issue for women to be covered by healthcare the same way Viagra is covered, as a problem.  These people live in a realm called...bullshit mountain...on bullshit mountain our problems are amplified and our solutions simplified, and that is why they won’t work.”
This is what the media is suppose to do, this is the media’s job, but because of the the centrist Golden Mean Fallacy corporate culture of CNN etc, they just tolerate this nonsense.  That is why Jon Stewart is fantastic,
Or shaming Congress as an institution, which none of the major organizations have done, they should come out and shame the shit out of the whole institution which...no they haven’t done.  They basically normalize that behavior so Congress can get away with nonsense like this.
youtube
Or the Media’s notoriously short memory, so when people with a terrible track record come back to offer their wisdom, the media...and mostly CNN accepts them unquestioningly.  Which is why people forget how fucking awful the Iraq War is, if you get your news through cable TV, they already have.
youtube
The entire existence of the Daily Show is a condemnation of the mainstream media, specifically cable news.  Fox News is obviously a lying propagandist of the Murdoch family where sexual harassment is the norm, but the centrist media constantly fails at its actual fucking job.  In their desperation for ratings, we get a shallow talking point driven news coverage with an obsession over coverage that consistently confuses entertainment with the news, and those just don’t go together, they never will, the News is about getting people to understand the world better which evidently a fucking comedy news show can do better than they can.  This here, the crossfire debate, is the greatest moment of Jon Stewart’s career (at least until his inevitably presidency).
youtube
Because what Jon Stewart is talking about came to its fruition in 2016, where the media totally failed to do its fucking job, and helped lead to President Trump.  There is a reason why a one hour comedy show consistently delivered the best news, and why people hated the news industry so much they are willing to believe outright lies by the Trump Administration, because the media has completely failed this country, and in so doing, helped bring this nation to its knees.
Edit:
I fond this clip right here of Jon Stewart taking to Christ Wallace and it is really informative about both the problems with Fox News and the main stream Centrist Media.

How to Rock an Apron (Part 2) - A Klance High School AU
I was hoping to finish this up in 2 parts, but alas, the words started getting away from me yet again.  i decided to break it up and post this part in celebration of S2 (there are no spoilers though, so you’re safe).  You can find part 1 HERE.  There will be one more part after this, and it’s almost finished, so yay!  Thanks again to the friends who cheered this on while it was happening.
The hell of it was, the bastard was right.  It was unfair - really, really unfair Keith's poor beleaguered sanity interjected - how attractive Lance managed to make the same apron every other student was wearing look.  The same criminally pink shade that made the rest of them look ill somehow complimented Lance's hair and skin and made them look luminous.  The cut that didn't work on anyone else made his shoulders broader, his waist thinner, and his legs longer - something about the lines it created suggested bendy to Keith's brain, but Keith suspected his brain was a filthy pervert.
He should look just as ridiculous as the rest of them - and in a way he did - but the way he owned it the way other kids tried to do and failed utterly took the absurdity and flipped it on its head and left Lance looking stupidly hot.  The combination of his brazenness and the frills and his dirty grin and his ridiculous fucking face somehow added up to an overall look that was somewhere between adorable and filthy hot to the point of obscenity.
The things Keith had imagined doing to Lance in that apron, on top of that apron, using that apron as a prop, would haunt him for the rest of his life.  Or until his dick fell off from over-handling.
Of course there was no way he was actually telling Lance any of that.  He was horny and pathetic not suicidal, thank you.  Although there was something in the air between them, something pregnant and pulsing, a tension that felt delicious in its pressure but so close to popping Keith didn't know if there was anything they could do to maintain it.  He really didn't want to anyway.  He raised a gently mocking eyebrow.  "Strangely, you have found a way to make it work for you."
Grinning, Lance fluttered his eyelashes outrageously.  "Of course I do."  He smoothed his hands over the stretch of the apron over his hips.  "I'm the prettiest princess in all the land."
He said that without an ounce of shame, or humor, or anything else that indicated it was supposed to be a joke or something.  Keith seriously fucking loved that about him.  Lance legitimately did not care about how "masculine" he was or if others perceived him as feminine. Their second week of school, some dumb jock had thought he'd come up with a real zinger when he told Lance, "only girls take Home Ec dude, you a girl now or something, Sanchez?" and Lance had just looked at him and said, "and if I am?  You say that like it's something to be embarrassed about.  I dare you to tell my mom or one of my sisters they should be ashamed of being female."  Keith thought that might have been the moment he got in so deep.
So yeah, it was stupid hot that Lance was comfortable wearing girl things and calling himself a pretty princess and it not really meaning anything other than that he liked those things - but it was also stupid fucking brave of him too, and that might be what really did it for Keith.  Either way, it gave him the courage not to laugh or play it off either.  He hummed thoughtfully.  "Huh, you might just be," he muttered like he hadn't been thinking that Lance was the prettiest boy he'd ever seen on a pretty much daily basis for months.
The bubble of whatever between them popped - it was clear as day on Lance's face.  Heat chased shock through his expression and he ducked his head a little like he was suddenly shy.  "Yeah, you think so?"  His voice was rough, like the words had been dumped into a blender with a pound of gravel yet somehow still fragile and hopeful.
In a flash the inevitability of this moment exploded in Keith's brain in a shower of electric sparks.  The saying went that you saw your life flash before your eyes before you died, and this wasn't a near death experience, and it wasn't his whole life, but Keith was definitely seeing still images like bursts of memory superimposed on this moment, a replay of everything that had led him here.
Like he'd been asked to make a timeline, Keith relived their first argument in the hallway, Lance's opening volley in their prank war, the escalation of their stupid rivalry, and the moment when Vice Principal Iverson had caught them both red-handed trying to pull off separate pranks at the same time in the teacher's lounge and arguing over who got there first.
They'd of course been immediately hauled to the office and subjected to a diatribe on their lack of discipline, but Keith couldn't remember any of the words Iverson had snarled.  It was the ghost of the self-satisfied smile Lance had flashed at Keith every time Iverson looked away the crept through Keith's brain now.  Followed by the stunned look of horror that had replaced it when the VP had dropped the bombshell that they would both have to attend a detention hour for their last period for the entire year.
No amount of pleading had been able to convince Iverson to change his mind about that and Keith remembered the apologetic look the guidance councilor had worn when informing the two of them that rearranging their schedules to accommodate the punishment meant the only elective available to them was Home Ec if they wanted to fit in all the requirements for graduation.
The images kept coming, so many overwhelming him: the first time he'd put on this ridiculous apron; the first time he'd seen lance in his; the day he realized sewing was a piece of cake, cooking he could do passably well, but baking was simply out of the question; the look on Shiro's face when he'd suggested Keith ask Lance for help with this cupcake assignment so he didn't fail (since Lance was inexplicably good at baking for some reason); the way Lance hadn't reacted like it was weird at all when Keith had caved and took Shiro's advice; the look of faint amusement on their teacher's face when they'd asked to borrow the classroom kitchen after school.
All of it was a clear path from that first moment to this one and Keith could see now that they had always been heading here.  The two of them were a runaway train headed for the bridge that was out - and there was no way they weren't gonna go over that cliff.  Once they'd set that first wheel in motion there was no getting off this track.  Keith could blame Iverson, or Shiro, or himself, or his hormones, or anyone else he wanted - but the truth of the matter was that fate was really the one to blame. They were destined to tumble over this edge together, go out in a blaze of glory - egging each other on the whole time.
Knowing that made it easy - so fucking easy - to take a step, get in Lance's space, crowd him against the counter and cage him in, bracing his hands on the table, one on either side of Lance's hips.  "Mhmm."  he leaned forward and whispered the rest straight into Lance's ear.  "I think you're the prettiest thing I've ever seen."
A fine tremor rolled up Lance's spine.  They were still close enough that it had their bodies just barely brushing against each other in interesting ways.  He sucked in a stilted breath that sounded like he only vaguely remembered how to do that breathing thing.  "I wanted you the first second I saw you," he blurted.
Keith pulled back enough to look at Lance, dying inside at how edible the faint blush staining the bridge of his nose made him look.  He raised an eyebrow.  "Oh yeah?"
Lance bit his lip and nodded, flushing darker.  "And then hated myself immediately.  Fingerless gloves.  Popped collar.  Mullet.  All things one should not have to list when describing their crush."
Keith just stared at him.  "You hung an eight foot poster in the gym before the first student assembly.  Of yourself.  Dabbing."  He gave Lance a pointed look.  "You think I'm not questioning my life choices constantly?"
That cocky little smirk of Lance's that seemed to exist just to test Keith's grip on his self control made a reappearance at that.  Lance leaned back against the counter and tipped his chin up.  "Yeah?  You come up with any answers yet?"
Keith leaned in closer, enough that all it would take to press their lips together would be one of them tilting their head a little.  He offered his own smug smirk.  "Is this a multiple choice question?"
Lance laughed, breath puffing against Keith's lips.  "A) I'm a powerful warlock that has cast a spell on you, causing you to become enchanted with me.  B) You're just really into delightfully tacky shit - as evidenced by your wardrobe.  C) This was Iverson's plan all along because he figured if we were too busy hitting on each other then we couldn't have time to keep our prank war going.  or D) This was always going to happen and even though it's insane and probably very ill-advised we should just go with it and crash and burn together."
Keith smiled and dared to move his hands from the table to Lance's hips, heart beating wild and fast against his ribs.  "You forgot a few."
Lance raised an eyebrow and lifted his hands, curling them into the fabric of Keith's t-shirt just above his waist.  "Enlighten me."
Was flirting supposed to be this much fun?  Was it supposed to feel this much like what they used to do when they were "rivals?"  Keith's blood sang with the thrill of competition, the hind-brain desire to prove his strength and cunning to a potential mate.  It was heady, and arousing, and addictive - but most of all it was just really, really fun.  He rubbed his thumbs absently over the ridge of Lance's hipbones, noting the way every part of Lance he'd touched so far seemed to fit perfectly in his hands.  "E) This was Iverson's plan all along, but it's going to backfire because the two of us teaming up will cause him far more hell than we ever could have separately.  And F) all of the above."
Lance curled his fingers tighter around the fabric of Keith's shirt, bunching it up so that his knuckles just barely grazed Keith's skin.  He smiled when Keith shivered at the light contact.  "You have a final answer, or do you need to phone a friend?"
A hundred witty responses pushed themselves to the forefront of Keith's brain, but he realized that the two of them could probably keep this game going forever if they wanted to.  And... Lance was touching him, skin on skin and they were damn near pressed together, they were close enough that Keith could kiss him if he wanted to (spoiler alert: he very much wanted to).  So why in the fuck would he worry about keeping this lively back and forth going when what he should really be trying to do was end it as quickly as possible in favor of trying to get his mouth on Lance's?  He snorted and answered, "All of the above."
Rolling his eyes, Lance whispered, "it's always 'all of the above,'" before surging forward and kissing Keith

How to nurture a healthy brain for life (Part 7 of Your Brain at 100)
This is part 7 of a series of lessons in brain health from our elders — those folk who lived the longest and healthiest. Click here to download the entire series as a PDF
Dementia, memory loss and cognitive decline are robustly related to old age, and AD is one of the leading causes of death globally. So, is the payoff for a longer life memory loss and poor brain health in our final years?
To answer this question, I’ve look to two sources — those exceptionally old folks who remain in robust physical and mental health until the very end of their lives, and our evolutionary past.
Over millennia, Mother Nature has equipped us to survive and thrive in the wild. Our brains evolved such that from the womb to the tomb we’re required to move, eat well, sleep, immerse ourselves in nature, avoid stress, love and befriend, and seek meaning. These requirements neatly match the everyday life prescriptions followed by the world’s longest-living people.
Prevention is our best defence and the research on dementia is clear. Those of us who lead mentally, socially and physically stimulating lives have reduced risk of age-related brain disease. If we live as close as possible to how Mother Nature intended, while reaping the rewards of our modern healthcare, there is every chance we can add not only years to our lives but life to our years.
Our human ancestors likely evolved facing similar survival challenges to other species.
Whereas the need to acquire food was a major day-to-day challenge during much of our evolutionary history, today we live with a constant oversupply of food.
Today, our intellectual challenges focus on work or education, rather than the challenge of acquiring food.
Neuroscientist and ageing researcher, Prof Mark P. Mattson writers in Ageing Brain Reviews.
Regular intellectual challenges are critical for brain development and a successful career, and recent findings suggest that intermittent exercise and energy restriction can further enhance and then sustain the functional capabilities of the brain during aging.
Rather like an animal in the wild, our intellect evolved to function optimally when we’re motivated towards a goal, slightly hungry, and on foot, a state Mattson likens to ‘Hunger Games’ bolstered brainpower.
In a 2017 Trends in Neurosciences paper, University of Arizona researchers David Raichlen and Gene Alexander support Mattson’s case that our brains are a product of our evolutionary history and our past as hunter-gatherers.
They argue as humans transitioned from a relatively sedentary ape-like existence to a more physically demanding hunter-gatherer lifestyle, starting around two million years ago, we began to engage in complex foraging tasks that were simultaneously physically and mentally demanding, and that may explain how moving and thinking came to be so connected.
Notably, the parts of the brain most taxed during high cognitive load tasks such as foraging (the pre-frontal cortex, hippocampus and entorhinal cortex) are the same areas that show vulnerability in Alzheimer’s disease.
When faced with inactivity as is so common in our modern-day life, our brains adaptively reduce capacity as part of an energy-saving strategy, leading to age-related brain atrophy…
The evidence from modern science and ancient wisdom is clear. How we eat, move, sleep, form relationships and find meaning is intimately connected to how our brains grow, think, feel and, ultimately, age.
1. The best exercise for your brain is physical exercise
Our brains and nervous systems evolved to move us around and to sense and perceive the world. Our cognitive prowess and human intellect evolved while we were on foot. Our brains evolved, not to think or feel, but to control how we move. Therefore, moving is the best way we know to keep our brains fit and well.
A Canadian review of twenty-four randomised control trials and twenty-one prospective cohort studies calculated that at least one in seven cases of AD could be prevented if everyone who is currently inactive took up exercise.
People living in Blue Zones people don’t run marathons, wear Fitbits, or join Crossfit gyms. Instead, they live in environments that constantly ‘nudge’ them into moving without thinking about it. Jeanne Calment rode her bike till she was 100, and lived in a second-story apartment with no lift until she was 110.
2. Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants
Our ancestors and their smart brains were trotting across the landscape hunting, fishing and foraging for food. We evolved to eat food from the rivers, forest and sky. We are also adaptable, and the many versions of a healthy ‘diet’ vary by country, culture (and today by social media platform). What sets those who live the longest apart is not the minutiae of their diet and balance of nutrients gained from fats, protein or carbohydrates, but the absence of refined processed foods.
Evidence from epidemiological studies such as the Blue Zones and clinical trials strongly implicates a Mediterranean-style diet slows brain ageing.
And most recently, a clinical trial in Australia proved successful in treating depression by encouraging young people with depression to up their consumption of vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, legumes, fish, lean red meats, olive oil and nuts, while reducing their consumption of unhealthy ‘extras’ foods, such as sweets, refined cereals, fried food, fast-food, processed meats and sugary drinks.
When we eat, we’re consuming not only nutrients but energy in the form of calories. Researchers, such as the Dunedin Study team, are now unravelling the relationships among calories, lifespan, healthspan and cognitive health. Calorie restriction (eating less) and intermittent fasting (fasting on and off) increases longevity in all species thus far observed, from yeast to rodents to primates — it’s assumed the same is true for us.
This notion ties back to the ‘Hunger Games’ concept whereby our brains evolved to function most optimally when we’re hungry and looking for food. Eating less benefits our glucose control, cholesterol and may produce mild neuronal stress which engages signalling pathways that improve the ability of the brain to resist ageing.
Dietary advice for brain health can be summed up by Michael Pollen’s famous adage,
Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants.
3. Get more sleep
As earthlings, our biological rhythms are determined by the rising and setting of the sun. Our sleep patterns, when hormones are released, our blood pressure and body temperature, ebb and flow in sync with day and night.
Modern-day life with its artificial lighting late at night, alarm clocks, shift work, iPhones in bed, and jetlag, is very good at interfering with our natural sleep patterns. As a basic biological function, sleep is overlooked and underappreciated, and globally, modern humans are chronically sleep-deprived.
Sleep deprivation (even a few hours a night) impacts cognition, mood, memory, and learning, and long-term leads to chronic disease including depression, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, all risk factors for developing dementia.
A good night’s sleep every night should be a priority, not a luxury. And my personal daily indulgence, a short afternoon nap, consolidates memory, sparks creativity and smooths your rough emotional edges, giving you greater control over your thoughts and feelings.
4. Challenge your mind
Lab mice kept in bare cages with no toys or places to explore show greater rates of age-related cognitive decline compared to their counterparts kept in enriched novel environments full of toys, tunnels and mazes. As we’ve discussed, humans are no different.
People who stay mentally engaged in life and constantly challenge themselves to step out of their comfort zone have reduced risk of age-related cognitive decline and dementia.
Children have a natural tendency to run and play, whereas adults tend take life more seriously. We don’t lose the need for novelty and pleasure once we grow up. Game playing, whether it be video or online, traditional board games, dancing, or team or individual sports, has been shown to alleviate boredom, anxiety, depression, loneliness, despair and even physical pain.
As Charlene Levitan said to me,
We don’t stop playing and learning because we get old, we grow old because we stop playing and learning.
5. Find your place or moment of calm
One pervasive theme I came across writing my book was how stress ‘gets under our skin’ to influence our mental and physical health decades later.
Not all stress is bad, but chronic or toxic stress, especially life events that are out of our control, have deleterious effects.
The key to buffering stress is to find ways to improve your perceived ability to cope with whatever life throws your way. Find peace amid the chaos. Find your place or moment of calm.
The evidence is mixed whether or not stress causes dementia, but it’s clear stress hormones alter risk for anxiety, depression, obesity and cardiovascular disease, which in turn increase dementia risk. 292
More has been spoken or written about the practice of mindfulness meditation in recent years than any other previously free stress-relief practice. With good reason. Paying attention to your breath, which is a core component of many mindfulness practices, reduced anxiety and depression, and improves sleep.
Blue Zones people have in place varied daily rituals that reduce or buffer the impact of stress in their lives. Activities include prayer, napping and happy hour with friends. (I’ll add walking the dog or enjoying a good book to the mix.)
6. Connect with family and friends
After we foraged, caught or hunted our food, we trotted back to our tribe. Being socially connected to other people protects against stress and because socialising involves many cognitive functions such as thinking, feeling, sensing, reasoning and intuition, friendships contribute to cognitive reserve.
Old age brings ‘costs of survivorship,’ and a ‘thinned’ social landscape. Richard Setterson writes,
We lose people with whom we shared many experiences, who are central to our identities, and who are no longer there to validate — or to question — our memories or accounts. This kind of identity loss also occurs with the death of older generations, as we are pushed up the family ladder and, once at the top, become orphans in time.
A 2010 meta-analysis of 148 studies including 300 000 people who were tracked for 7.5 years after completing surveys of how often they met with family and friends, found socially connected folks live longer.
On the flipside, loneliness was associated with late-life loss of cognition, including elevated blood pressure, depression and poor sleep. The startling conclusion of this report was that the influence of social isolation on the health and risk of death was comparable to smoking.
7. Seek out meaning and purpose
With purpose and meaning comes positive emotions — love, compassion, and appreciation — which counteract stress and support a healthy brain throughout life. Blue Zones residents are members of faith communities and find meaning and purpose through spirituality. Living a meaningful life seems an unlikely addition to a book about the brain, but ‘purpose in life’ is a concept in neuroscience that links to robust brain and mind health.
Purpose, defined as the tendency to derive meaning from life’s experiences and to possess a sense of intentionality and goal-directedness that guides behaviour, can be quantified.
A study published in Archives of General Psychiatry in 2010 examined the association of purpose in life with risk of AD in more than 900 elderly people living in residential care. During the seven years of follow-up, greater purpose in life was associated with a substantially reduced risk of AD, such that a person with a high score on the purpose in life measure was approximately two and half times more likely to remain free of AD than a person with a low score.
Have you figured out why you’re here?
What’s your north star? Your ‘ikigai’. Your ‘plan de vida’? There are possibly many clever strategies to find meaning of your life — somewhere in the nexus of passion, skillset, employment opportunity, education and service to others. William James the psychologist said in 1920,
The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.
Recently I’ve come across a simpler way. Over the years, I’ve taken taken stage with Paul Baldock, a bone biologist at Sydney’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research. We called on to share our wisdom, purpose and what we’ve learned on our career paths in science. Baldock has developed a novel formula for every decision he makes in the research lab, career, and life. He simply asks,
Is it awesome? Does it help?

Safal Niveshak Stream – The Powerful Effect of Compounding Goodwill
Some nice stuff I am reading, watching, and observing at the start of this weekend…
Of Greater Fools and Bubbles
How many greater fools does it take to make a bubble? An old but highly relevant post from Jason Zweig…
Economists have struggled and failed to explain why markets turn into manias. Some have denied bubbles exist; others have argued bubbles must somehow be “rational.” Often, the argument is that bubbles are caused by “uninformed” traders, or “dumb money,” while the “smart money” sits on the sidelines.
The latest findings suggest, however, that bubbles might be caused not by traders who lack information but by those who have too much.
Pessimism is Seductive
Morgan Housel of Collaborative Fund hits it again with his post on how pessimism is intellectually seductive in a way optimism only wishes it could be…
Tell someone that everything will be great and they’re likely to either shrug you off or offer a skeptical eye. Tell someone they’re in danger and you have their undivided attention.
Hearing that the world is going to hell is more interesting than forecasting that things will gradually get better over time, even if the latter is accurate for most people most of the time. Pessimism can be hard to distinguish from critical thinking and is often taken more seriously than optimism, which can be hard to distinguish from salesmanship and aloofness.
…On one hand it makes sense. Daniel Kahneman once wrote: “Organisms that treat threats as more urgent than opportunities have a better chance to survive and reproduce.”
But on the other hand, it’s crazy. We don’t just respond faster to pessimism. We coddle it for longer than is necessary. Optimism demands facts and is ditched at the first sign of trouble. Pessimism can be grown from a crazy thought and clutched indefinitely.
How to Fill Your Years with Life
If you haven’t picked Ryan wonderful book – Ego is the Enemy – do that now. In this book, he shows how ego – irrational or delusional self-belief – has long been linked with success and striving for goals yet this same drive has a dark side. Anyways, Ryan just wrote a wonderful post on things to do to live a full life and leave nothing on the table by 30. Among others, here are two of my favourites from his list…
7. Keep a Journal — Not for looking backward, but to force you to think about what you’re doing now. I should have done this earlier.
10. The Quiet Moments Are The Best — There is a line from Lao Tzu. “Peace is in the emptiness. Emptiness is in the fast of the mind.” It’s in the quiet, still moments that we feel what matters in life. Standing on the shore of a lake. Looking out over a canyon. Resting your head against someone else’s. It’s a shortage of these moments that give rise to the feeling that we haven’t lived enough, that we have to keep going. Seeking them out, encouraging them is what makes you feel like you’ve done plenty.
Ryan ends his post with a paragraph from Mozart, who lived to be 35 but filled those years with many, many decades of life and work…
I have now made a habit of being prepared in all affairs of life for the worst. As death, when we come to consider it closely, is the true goal of our existence, I have formed during the last few years such close relationships with this best and truest friend of mankind that his image is not only no longer terrifying to me but is indeed very soothing and consoling, and I thank my God for graciously granting me the opportunity of learning that death is the key which unlocks the door to our true happiness. I never lie down at night without reflecting that—young as I am—I may not live to see another day. Yet not one of all my acquaintances could say that in my company I am morose or disgruntled. For this blessing, I daily thank my creator.
Howard Marks on Market Excesses
Like Warren Buffett’s shareholder letters, Howard Marks’ memos are a must-read. In one he wrote in 2005, Marks discussed market trends being taken to excess – and the painful consequences that become clear in hindsight. Here’s an excerpt from that memo of Marks, which is highly relevant in today’s today environment…
I often cite John Kenneth Galbraith’s observation that one of the outstanding hallmarks of the financial world is “the extreme brevity of the financial memory.” Investors lose money over and over because they simply forget that cycles are inevitable and there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Now I’ve found a great quotation from Churchill, also reminding us that foresight comes largely from awareness of history.
Along similar lines, I’m struck by the extent to which a related factor, inadequate skepticism, also contributes to investment losses. Getting the most out of a book, play or movie usually requires “willing suspension of disbelief.” We’re glad to overlook the occasional plot glitch, historical inaccuracy or physical impossibility because it increases our enjoyment. When we watch Peter Pan, we don’t want to hear the person sitting next to us say, “I can see the wires” (even though we know they’re there). While we know boys can’t fly, we don’t care; we’re just there for fun.
But our purpose in investing is serious, not fun, and we must constantly be on the lookout for things that can’t work in real life. In short, the process of investing requires a strong dose of disbelief. Time and time again, the post-mortems of financial debacles include two classic phrases: “It was too good to be true” and “What were they thinking?” I’m writing to explore why these observations are so often invoked in the past tense.
How Big Oil Will Die
Electric cars with lives 3x longer than those run on the internal combustion engine are being bought in droves in the Western world. But this is just one of the factor that may spell doom for oil and the businesses that survive by producing and selling it…
Big Oil is perhaps the most feared and respected industry in history. Oil is warming the planet — cars and trucks contribute about 15% of global fossil fuels emissions — yet this fact barely dents its use. Oil fuels the most politically volatile regions in the world, yet we’ve decided to send military aid to unstable and untrustworthy dictators because their oil is critical to our own security. For the last century, oil has dominated our economics and our politics. Oil is power.
Yet I argue here that technology is about to undo a century of political and economic dominance by oil. Big Oil will be cut down in the next decade by a combination of smartphone apps, long-life batteries, and simpler gearing. And as is always the case with new technology, the undoing will occur far faster than anyone thought possible.
A Dozen Ideas from Charlie Munger
Tren Griffin of 25iq has done another wonderful post, this time on compiling a dozen thoughts from Charlie Munger from the 2017 Berkshire AGM, including this one…
“A life properly lived is just learn, learn, learn all the time.” “If we had stopped learning, you [Berkshire shareholders] wouldn’t be here – you’d be alive, probably, but you wouldn’t be here.” “There’s nothing like a personal, painful experience if we want to learn, and we certainly have had our share of it.” “There’s nothing like the pain of getting into a lousy business to find a good one.” “We were young and ignorant then; Now we’re old and ignorant.” “Experience is like eating cockleburs – it really gets your attention.” “It is a good idea to not play where the other people are better.”
Genius of Jeff Bezos
Sean Iddings has written a nice post tracking the genius of Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos…
Jeff Bezos was able to see differently than nearly everybody else in the early 2000’s, and continues today, largely in part to his fanatical preparation.
In Jeff Bezos’ biography The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon, childhood friend Joshua Weinstein recalled, “He was excruciatingly focused. Not like mad-scientist focused, but he was capable of really focusing, in a crazy way, on certain things. He was extremely disciplined, which is how he is able to do all these things.” Part of that focus and discipline was vacuuming up details from history. This vast storehouse of details has given Bezos the ability to frame his present situation with the best historical examples. In other words, by looking at the past he has been able to throw out all of the useless noise and draw accurate conclusions to how the future might unfold based on the past.
This phenomenon is perfectly observed in 2003 and is repeating again today.
Keep in Touch with People
Be the butterfly whose wings can create a positive hurricane in someone’s life. A lovely post from my friend Vishal Kataria…
Don’t just keep in touch with people who matter because they can give something. Keep in touch because sometimes, you will give something… something that nobody else can offer. Be there for them. Your friends will thank life for sending a friend like you. Your butterfly wings can create a positive hurricane in their lives.
I’m guilty of not keeping in touch with people who care. Just because. It took a memory to make me realize how selfish I am. It’s not always about me. In fact, it almost never should be about me. I will step out of my comfort zone. I will keep in touch. I will ask people if I can do something for them. Will you?
Compounding Goodwill
Einstein said, “Compound interest is the eighth wonder.” If you understand the basics of compounding, you would tend to agree with Einstein’s statement. There is immense power in compounding. A small amount of money left for compounding for a very long time, even at a modest rate, can turn into a staggering sum.
But what most people miss is that the real beauty of compounding lies not in wealth creation, but in another, more important, area of life too. It’s called goodwill that you create in this world.
In his book, Education of a Value Investor, Guy Spier writes about Mohnish Pabrai …
…over the past ten years, I’ve repeatedly observed how he looks to see what he can do for others, not the other way round…By acting this way, I could see that Mohnish created an incredible network of people who wish him well and would love to find ways to help him and thank him for his kindness. This is the extraordinarily powerful effect of compounding goodwill by being a giver, not a taker. And as he has taught me, the paradox is that you end up receiving infinitely more in life by giving than by taking.
True gifts bring people closer together. An unconditional gift, one given with nothing expected in return, can change everything. It creates conversations and spread ideas. It opens doors and creates forward motion.
So, what value are you adding to the world? What is it that you’re giving out without any expectation of returns?
As with all matters of compounding, the sooner you start the longer runway you’ll get.
Start today!
