Legislative action
1.
a.      What is their perspective on your issue?
        - Congressman Desaulnier
After visiting one of the border city and people there who had been separated from their families, he wrote an opinion saying “What we saw and heard was deeply disturbing—children were still being held in cages, pregnant mothers were sitting on concrete floors, and we heard stories of separated children being told that their parents had abandoned them. This truly is a humanitarian crisis, created by the Trump Administration and fostered by Republican Leadership in Congress, and it is occurring right here on American soil.”
Congressman Desaulnier is clearly against Trump’s project to build a border wall.
        - Senator Harris
She is against the border wall because it is a waste of money that could be used for another purpose. She said “ the appropriation of $25 billion for a border wall is a waste of taxpayer money. A wall will not secure our border and I remain concerned those billions of dollars may also be used to implement this Administration’s anti-immigrant agenda”.
        - Senator Feinstein
She is against the border wall as well, for an economic reason but also believing it is not going to solve immigration problem. She said “ Instead of strengthening local law enforcement and the communities they serve, President Trump is prioritizing a border wall that won’t work and a deportation force that doesn’t distinguish between dangerous criminals and hard-working families.”
b.      Have they sponsored any bills that relate to your issue?
       - Congressman Desaulnier
He never sponsored any bill relevant to the border wall but he sponsored some in favor of immigration. (HR858,...)
       - Senator Harris
No information about a bill related to this issue.
       - Senator Feinstein
She sponsored many bills related to immigration. She is almost always for a good immigration program and wants to improve it.
2.      Issue :  Should the Feds Accept Private Donations to Build Trump’s Border Wall?
a.      Are there any bills that pertain to your issue?  How many?
One bill was sponsored in favor the donations for the border wall by Rep. Diane Black (R-TN) to create an account at the U.S. Treasury dedicated to holding public donations for the completion of the wall along the United States’ southern border.
b.      Choose one to analyze and click on the title. What is the bill #?
H.R. 5876
c.       Briefly describe the bill in your own words.
Basically, due to the economic problem to fund the building of the wall, Rep. Diane Black introduces the Border Wall Trust Fund Act. This project consists of creating a platform where public could donate money to build the wall and make the project faster.
d.      What impact will it have?
The reason the border wall’s project was stopped is because of an economic problem. This idea could then encourage people to give money if they are against immigration, without even thinking. The argument of Democrats against this border wall is then not still valid.
e.       Would you vote yea or nay? Why?
Of course I would vote nay ! I am totally opposed to the border wall and I would never let people with a lot of money decide for me.
f.        Review the bill progression.  Did it originate in the House or the Senate?  What committees have reviewed it?  Where it is currently?
It was introduce in the House. No information...
g.      How satisfied are you with the current Federal legislation on your issue? Explain.
I think people in the current Federal legislation on this issue are most of them opposed to this project which is pretty reassuring.
3.      Article :
What is the subject of the article?
The future speaker of the house, Nancy Peloci, shot down negotiations that would include funding for President Donald Trump's long-desired wall along the nearly 2,000-mile US-Mexico border.
Who is the author?
Joe Perticone
What is the context?
Article written on December 6 just after the event occured. Source -> business insider, an international website that provides information about business news and current events.
Who is the intended audience?
Everyone
What is the bias and perspective of the author?
There is no perspective, the acticle is objective. It explains the facts without the opinion of the author. The only opinion is what Nancy Pelosi’s statement about the decision she took.
What is the significance of the article?
- Opinion and statement said by Nancy Pelosi = objective facts
- Her decision
Do you agree with it? Why or why not?
Since it is an objective article, I obviously agree about what it says. Plus, I personally agree with the decision of Mrs. Pelosi.

I saw a bumper sticker on a orange truck today that read something like 'i hope karma has 14 inch strap on ready for Nancy pelocy' or something to that effect and I was stuck in traffic looking at this bumper sticker for 10 min
I get that the intent was to try and be insulting but, thanks to Tumblr, I couldn't help think that this bumper sticker was WLW shipping a politician with the physical embodiment of karma in a chuck tingle kind of way, which is a rather non conservative take

Concept Reflection 7
Josie Brooks, Natalie Szenas, Skylar Adkins
What were the main idea/s behind it?
Tough Guise: The main idea of the film was how the media portrays a “true man” and how it encourages the violent behavior of men through characters in movies and tv.  It also focuses on how race is involved in the portrayal of men in movies and creates stereotypes for men of those different races.
Miss Representation: The main idea behind the film is that women are sexualized and objectified in movies, politics, news channels, and articles, leading to an unhealthy view of how women should look and act. It also focuses on how the access to this media and representation of women affects mental health and self image.
What were some of the relevant concepts from class that you saw depicted in the movie?
Tough Guise: The idea of gender roles is demonstrated heavily in the film. Proving that behavior, attitudes, and activities are taught through the socialization process, Tough Guise encourages the idea. When referring to the stereotypes created around men and their race, stereotypes and overgeneralizations become a relevant concept in the film.
Miss Representation: Gender roles are also prevalent in this film when focusing on politics and news networks. Clips are shown throughout the film of women in politically powerful positions being stereotyped. Women on news channels are dressed in revealing clothes and have a full face of makeup because that is what they believe will get them views. Another example is when Nancy Peloci first ran for office and was asked, “who is going to take care of your children”.
What were some points that stood out for you or surprised you in the movie?
Tough Guise: The most surprising part of the film is how early these stereotypes for men became so violent.  A lot of people talk about how violence in the media is so prevalent in today’s time but all the way back in western movies and mob movies men were ruthlessly killing people without a second thought.  Yes the graphics have become more gory in our current times, but the level of violence was about equal if not worse.
Miss Representation: Things that were most surprising during the film were the statistics on women. The film showed that 53% of 13 year old girls were unhappy with their body. This was caused by exposure to media and the idea of “the perfect body” that creates a false conception at a young age.
Did you agree with the perspective of society and gender/sexuality in the movie? To be clear, I am asking if you agree with the stance the filmmakers are taking in their respective documentaries--this is not a question of whether or not the information portrayed is accurate--the information presented is based on sound social science research from the time the films were released.  Why or why not?
Tough Guise: The film released the idea that men should be tough and violent and those two qualities make a “true man”. However, I disagree with the idea due to the opinion that men should be able to act and be whoever they care to be. I don’t necessarily agree with the idea that every “true man”, whether in film or real life, needs to fit that mold. I do understand and agree that filmmakers illustrate men to be this way and it is a very popular stereotype within the film industry and media.
Miss Representation: The film shows society the sexualization of women in media that put women in a powerless and helpless position. I agree with the stance of the filmmakers because they are showing that society does sexualize and objectify women in the media and there needs to be change. This idea of “the perfect body” is toxic for young girls and boys who then believe this is the only acceptable way to look.
**You must include some sort of photo or meme that pertains to one of the ideas discussed in this film. **

What is the overarching theme between the two documentaries? Stereotypes represented in the media for men and women to look and act a certain way.

SEX AND THE BOND MARKET
11 October 2021
I find myself being an alarmist these days. Not only are the House and Senate being run by the hard left socialists, but the Federal reserve seems to have lost sight of the fact that inflation is rearing its ugly head while they keep pumping the money supply at the ridiculous rate of 10 to 15 percent. How is it that the far- left minority is driving the bus?
Although I haven’t heard newscasters mention it, when congress, or any parliamentary body, is evenly split, as both houses of Congress are, any small minority that threatens to vote against the majority has the power to shift the agenda for the whole House. Normally the fringe left would represent only a tiny percentage of the legislators. AOC and her “squad” represent only 1 or 2 percent of the House. Bernie Sanders is only one out of one hundred senators. Yet they seem to be in charge of the congressional agenda. That’s because if they vote with the Republicans instead of the democrats, Nancy Peloci and Chuck Schumer will not be able to control Congress. So both leaders have to tilt far in the direction of these extremists to stay in charge. This gives these small groups their undue power.
Fortunately, Senator Manchin’s switch to a more realistic set of tax and spending plans is so significant. With his one vote he can shift the majority in the Senate away from the socialists. Likewise, a few courageous hose members seem to have had enough of the policies of the extreme left to put the agenda in the House up for grabs. Of course, all of this is in a fluid state right now so the investment outlook is most uncertain.
If the socialists prevail, inflation and interest rates are sure to rise. It also seems likely that stocks will be hit hard.
At the same time many analysts are also calling for the Fed to slow the excessive rate of growth of money, but Chairman Powell is up for reappointment. In its current state, Congress is probably in no mood for the Fed to begin tightening just as they are proposing massive tax and spending programs. So, while the Fed is normally independent of Congress, the left-wing wackos have more power than usual.
In recent weeks long term interest rates have begun to increase. This is probably because the Fed and quite a few analysts are beginning to talk about a time when the Fred will ease back on its purchases of government bonds. For the last few years, they have bought $125 billion a month. Of course this puts lots of liquidity into the hands of the public and probably explains why the stock market has gone up so much and why inflation has begun to show up in parts of the economy. If the fed slows down its bond buying long rates will likely go up, steepening the yield curve. This is generally good for the securities in your portfolio.
Given all this uncertainty I believe that it is wise to adopt a cautious stance until there is some clarification about the outcome. All of your securities are government guaranteed, short maturity bonds with no exposure to stocks. I believe that this is the best place to be right now.
In September your portfolios were down 0.5% .
Please feel free to give me a call if I can answer any questions for you.
Best regards,
