When the National Park Service was created in 1916, the enabling legislation that created the park “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people” also mandated that the land be retained in its natural condition, protected from “injury and spoliation.” So, as Mount Rainier National Park was being developed, park officials had to provide access without marring the spectacular scenery. To solve this problem, park architects and engineers innovated a new design aesthetic that blended roads and structures with the natural landscape.

The parkwide road and bridge system built between 1920 and 1957 featured natural materials such as local stone and wood. Roads curved with the landscape to reveal views and bridges framed waterfalls. This “NPS Rustic” style of architecture became the design standard for the National Park Service. Today, Mount Rainier’s innovative roads and bridges are still preserved as part of the park’s National Historic Landmark District.

This is the third installment of a series celebrating National Park Week.
I often hike alone. But occasionally, I enjoy sharing my love of nature with others.
The church I attend has a mentor/mentee program for youth. A friend and I each serve as mentors for two teenage boys. Knowing we all enjoy the…
Everyone watching the Brooks Falls bear cams this year including the experts over at explore.org have been a bit confused and I think even more delighted to see this going on.

BEHOLD YOUR 2023 FAT BEAR QUEEN!
128 Grazer took the top spot, and we couldn't be more proud. All hail Grazer!
Thanks for hanging with us. We appreciate you.
Make your weekend amazing. 🤎 🐻 🤎
Somehow Otis is losing which is insane to me because he's put on so much more weight than 901! He literally started the season skin and bones. You couldn't just see his ribs, you could see every bump on his spine. He's worked so hard and put on so much weight.
this is Total Time in Car. train trips don't count. do not count time spent in hotels. if you slept in your car you can put those hours towards your total tho. doesn't matter if you were the one driving or were just a passenger. and put in the tags where you went :)
The temperature may be dropping, but the competition—the competition—is heating up. Fat Bear Week 2023 has you all in raptures as some of the loveliest brown friends on Earth load up on salmon, salmon, and yet more salmon at the Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska.
These champions-elect are eating their way not just towards the hibernation season, but the coveted title of the state's most rotund bear. Newcomers and fan favorites alike are duking it out for this most prestigious prize as #fat bear week enters these final days. But don't forget—every bear is a winner in Fat Bear Week 2023.
And there is, of course, the live cam from the Brooks River at Katmai, where you can watch the action unfold in real time.

This is the second in a series celebrating National Park Week.
On the afternoon of May 23, 2018, I decided to finish my day in Shenandoah National Park by hiking the Rock Spring Cabin trail. According to the park map, the trail wasn’t long, and I was curious to see the cabin.
So, off I went, binoculars around my neck and camera across…
ATTENTION i have some EXTREMTLY important news about Fat Bears
🐻🐻🐻🐻
you guys know about fat bear week, right? every year, after the local brown bears have beefed up on salmon over the summer, katmai national park in alaska hosts Fat Bear Week—not the most scientific competition, where viewers just vote on which bear LOOKS fattest (because really, how are they gonna weigh them) but it’s hella fun anyway. the bears have great names. 32 chunk, 747 (aka Bear Force One), Otis, the Grazer Gang (vicious mama Grazer and her two equally vicious cubs), etc.
so by now, the bears have come out of hibernation, and we’re seeing our old faves, grazer and otis and chunk, etc. BUT also the best part of the bears coming back is getting to see the new “coys”—cubs of the year. usually mama bears have one or two cubs at a time. sometimes three.
guys. this year one of the bears has FOUR coys. FOUR. that’s pretty fucking rare and it’s the cutest fucking thing in the world and it’s the only thing keeping me fucking sane right now
LOOK AT THEM
HOLY SHIT????
THIS IS LITERALLY A CARTOON WHAT IS HAPPENING
if you wanna watch the bears live (very amusing highly recommend) then visit explore dot org! they have tons of nature/wildlife cams aside from the fat bears (but the fat bears are the best)
(middle photo was taken by a park ranger—general disclaimer, don’t bother or approach bears if you see any in the wild!)
