hello here's my wizard of oz + wicked art so far 💖
as you see they're my own versions of a AU in my head but they're heavily based on a mashup of the MGM 1939 movie + of the wicked musical show because i RLLY love the wicked witches, but i'm getting into the respective books and other adaptations <3 im tentatively posting on tumblr to see if there are other people interested or if its all faded into obscurity, hope we can get along.

Elphaba: It's been brought to my attention that I offended some of you. I'm truly sorry, I meant to offend all of you.

My personal headcanon is that Glinda actually hated Nessarose.
First and foremost I want to make it clear I don't think Glinda ever intended for Nessa to die. And even if she did I think Glinda would protect Nessa if only for Elphaba's sake.
But I do think that Glinda had a very unique third-party perspective on the sisters' relationship, and she would have seen how Nessa treated Elphaba; as nothing more than a personal assistant and human punching bag.
Glinda and Nessa were once extraordinarily alike. Both were beautiful girls, spoiled endlessly by their parents. They both treated Elphaba awfully, but the difference is Glinda has learnt, grown, and probably agonized over it. Nessa hasn't.
This was solely due to Elphaba. It was Glinda's friendship with Elphaba which taught her selflessness. And nothing shows this as clearly as her own desire for Elphaba's success, not only her own.
Tumblr media
She even seems to recognize that Nessa is one of the things in Elphaba's life that is actually limiting her, and encourages space and separation between the sisters, which, arguably, is what's best for Elphaba.
Tumblr media
Elphaba isn't the only person Glinda cares about that has been hurt by Nessa's actions either. Despite Glinda's moral flaws, she isn't blind to open cruelty and tyranny, especially concerning people she cares about. Nessa's treatment of the Munchkins, and Boq in particular, would not have gone unnoticed by Glinda.
Jealousy is also a huge part of Glinda's personality, so I can imagine her believing herself a better sister to Elphaba than Nessa. Or one more deserving of a sister than Nessa.
Tumblr media
I attribute her reaction to Nessa's death to her guilt rather than any lost love between them. I can imagine that in the absence of Elphaba, Glinda might have wanted to step in as a grieving sister, placing flowers on her grave, saying a prayer.
Tumblr media
It's further supported when Elphaba shows up, and Glinda immediately drops this act, showing her true blasé reaction to Nessa's death, whilst remaining sympathetic to Elphaba's pain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Regardless of whether she is the besties-with-everyone schoolgirl in Act One or the happy-go-lucky Good Witch of the North in Act Two I can not imagine, in the musical, Glinda feeling anything but contempt towards Nessa.

“‘A few trinkets for my sister,’ she said. ‘She’s like Miss Glinda, she loves the fancy outside of things. I found a Vinkus shawl in the bazaar, red roses on a black background, with black and green fringe. I’m sending it to her, and a pair of striped stockings that Ama Clutch knitted for me.’”
“He had brought her a traditional Vinkus fringed scarf--roses on a black background--and he had tied it around her waist, and from then on it was a costume for lovemaking.”
I feel there is some literary significance here. Elphaba buys the shawl for her sister as a gesture of love and then receives the very same one later on from Fiyero (his gesture of love). A rose for a rose (Nessarose) and then a rose as in romance. Black red and green. “Green fringe.” Elphaba on the fringe, never quite “whole,” offbeat, never fully this or that, without a soul (according to her), from both worlds (without even knowing it). On the fringe of her father’s love, never fully receiving it unlike her sister, and later, on the fringe of insanity.
And the red is love, all kinds, sisterly love, passionate love, but also the red of blood--Nessarose’s death, Fiyero’s murder and his blood on Elphaba’s hands and wrists as she finds him. The murder of Dr. Dillamond, the blood she almost choked on when biting the midwife’s finger off after only being alive for a minute or two. The red rubies in Quadling country, the Wizard’s crimson hot air balloon. The “ruby slippers, what made for her downfall. Love and destruction. Beauty and violence, political items, contention. As Elphie once said, “There was much to hate in this world, and too much to love.”
The black is her, her essence, but I don’t think in the typical, easy, “wicked” way. Her black hat. Her black crows. Her black hair that Galinda found herself spellbound by. Elphaba riding the broom for the first time in the dead of night, feeling like a night angel. Her black dresses and boots. Her murky beliefs, her slipping out of herself when part of the resistance. The way she blends into the woodwork despite being such a standout, how she’s able to do so for survival. Her staring into the night sky at the stars and thinking big thoughts whilst being exhausted by it all. Her spirit dimming, but then coming back. Her grief ultimately swallowing her, ruining her, regardless.

"Oh Father! Jeweled shoes!!!"
Nessarose, Elphaba's younger sister. In the play Elphaba is essentially allowed to attend Shiz under the condition of looking after Nessa. Their father, the Minister of Munchkinland, is very protective of Nessa and doting (in contrast to Elphaba who he is very cruel to. In the books they have a third sibling, but he doesn't really factor into books 1 &2 so I don't know much about him).
In Nessarose we can see how the Shiz uniform is "supposed to" look, and gather an idea of how the supporting cast's uniform would be based on. Navy/mid blues, the style similarities, etc.
Quick Note: having disability rep in stories/theater is good....... BUT this is one of those cases where it's not really positive representation. Instead Nessa "can't" be played by a wheelchair user, the script eventually calls for her disability to be "cured" by the Red Shoes (Ruby Slippers) and for her to stand/walk later in the production for her villain arc. Also lines like "beautifully tragic" and a lot of her stage-time/ role in the story is devoted to her wanting to be "normal", and the majority of her relationships (romantic and familial) are based on guilt and pity. Sooooo.... we've still got an awfully way long way to - I have heard of more recent productions (of other plays) and how they have incorporated their actor's disabilities into the show in creative and very successful ways. ASL in a production of Hamlet, Michael Arden’s Spring Awakening and Next to Normal being some examples.
edit: deepest apologies I am stupid and learning. Thank you @lillyjen!
