Can I ask for q!Phil hcs BUT when he's fully un Bird mode :D
Jokes on you that's easy, those are just more plain qPhil hcs for me >:D
qPhil headcanons masterlist
Sometimes if he's in a fight that he's not taking seriously he'll put some goofy ass music on in his headphones. Some favorites include the Mario invincibility star theme, Waltz of the Meatball Man, and the kind of bubbly anime ending music that plays over an emotionally devastating scene
After way too much stress, once he gets Chayanne & Tallulah to bed and is on his own he'll go somewhere and just. Scream. For as long as it takes. And then he chugs tea or noodle broth to prevent his throat from dying on him.
Sleep schedules his beloathed <- wants to spend more time with a bunch of islanders he doesn't get to see often
Out of the 3 polycule members, Fit is best at cheering him up. He knows Phil best and the extent to which he lacks a filter sometimes is too powerful for Phil not to at least smile at
His wheeze laugh is the best thing ever to the the kids. If the two of them can make him wheeze, they know they've done their job right.
As soon as he knows something is safe (the maze, an event site like the code builds, that new mountain at old Spawn, etc) he's the first one to start exploring. He's been that way as long as he can remember ;)
*Slaps top of his head* This old man can fit so much survivor's guilt in him
He's only old in age and wisdom, if you try to imply he's geriatric he will get SO out of pocket about the things he's done with Fit & Etoiles and you will regret it
Okay so I've talked about how his worst fear is not having control, especially of himself. And I've talked about other fears of his, but I don't think I've mentioned his fear of loss yet. He tries to pretend he isn't, he'll insist he isn't, and to some degree he isn't Entirely wrong, but he is afraid. Being as old as he is means you get a bit desensitized to loss because it's natural when the things and people around you don't live for as long as you do. The part of it Phil fears, or maybe hates is a better word, is all the emotional turmoil after. That bone-deep ache of grief, the heaviness that refuses to leave his chest, how easy it is to emotionally compromise him, the hollowness that consumes him. The way he can't think or sleep properly, how his motivation is completely wiped out, how embarrassing it feels to not be at 100% in front of people. He HATES the aftermath of it all.
Excursions, Shuniji, and ofc Weirdest Year by C418 are Phil grief songs, in this essay I will
The Federation has learned that if they want Phil to attend an event he isn't particularly interested in, all they have to do is have really good food there, especially Latino food
He does legitimately gag a little when he kills a mob and flies or maggots come out of it. That's not just drama, he fr is like 🤢. It reminds him of the first time he saw Ender King's corpse
A fraction of the reason why he has people he trusts very deeply, like Fit, whitelisted on his security stuff is bc he knows if he ever got too depressed (like when the kids were missing), he'd never leave the house and just bum around feeling awful despite being restless. Having them whitelisted means they can get in and force him to get some air and stop festering in his emotions.
See I could get into a whole analysis abt this but like. So many of my angst hcs for him are abt how he's kinda shit at taking care of himself, esp when the people he cares for the most are removed from the equation. But it's not that he's incapable of it, he's not a baby or something like that. It's another part of how he's so locked into being the caretaker, the protector, the Strong One, the wise one, etc etc etc that he Hates being in the reversed role. He's gone so long without it that now it's foreign and unpleasant to him. He feels weak & like a burden. But at the same time, going so long without being in the reversed role is unhealthy and he NEEDS to be the one taken care of or protected sometimes. Everyone does. It's a double-edged sword: be the caretaker, shoulder everything & suffer OR be the one taken care of, feel awful about it for one reason or another. He can't win. He hates the latter but he needs it occasionally just like anyone else. He prefers the former, but the toll it takes over time is extensive.
It's why he'll do little things in an attempt to remedy it. To avoid being full-on taken care of for once while also not Only doing the reverse. Watching the sunset with the kids, adventuring in new and exciting places, sparring with friends, etc. His escape is making vivid fond memories to look back on and smile about, even if they don't always fix his emotional state. At least he isn't fully neglecting himself.

WOW! THAT WAS SOME LORE, HUH? :D
Tumblr media
reposting this meme bc it's true and bc I really like it, lol
I have quite literally been scribbling notes on a scrap of paper like a madman while rewatching TGOA part 3 as many times as possible, just jotting down all the mindboggling information we've been given, and some less direct stuff that I could be reading too much into but is fun and neat even if it doesn't amount to anything crazy and galaxy-brained, lol.
So click/tap below the cut for rambles about the final part of Pulp Musicals episode 3
The Ghosts of Antikythera ⚓️
Names, Names, Names!!!
Hey, might as well start with all the new names we've gotten!
The captain of the Antikythera — the ghost ship from 'someplace else' — is Addison Arvad.
Kal (my beloved/beloathed ❤ ) is Kalfu
The Traveler we met in TBS is Sia 💖💖
Ahlaam is another Traveler. I adore her already, and not just because she saved Rose.
Dakkar is... somebody. As expected, I've been going crazy in my dms with @man-down-in-hatchet-town, and she believes Dakkar is probably inspired by/based on Captain Nemo? 👀
King(?!) Itzal is... probably bad news! Kal's the one who calls him a King and he is obviously pretty loyal and devoted to him, and wants to impress him (aww), so methinks Itzal is maybe not so good???? (I am also a proud supporter of Brooke's Dylan Saunders as Itzal campaign, lol)
The Blazing World is home. It's where the Travelers and the Antikythera's Searchers (rip) are from, it was destroyed once—but is being rebuilt?—and Kalfu and Itzal seem to want it gone for good.
Lincoln Island is the mysterious island our heroes on the Ellen Austin are approaching at the end of the episode, the place Ahlaam sent Rose and the Antikythera to via orrery.
Quick *Approximate* Timeline
Eh, what can I say? We got numbers and I decided to do a tiny bit of math about it.
1874 — the Antikythera & the Ellen Austin
🔴 YOU ARE HERE
🎶 When are we? 🎶 Well, Morgan Reese informs our time-traveling heroes that, uh yeah lol, last he checked the year was 1874. What a funny question from a bunch of rapscallions!
Captain Arvad's logs from the Antikythera start in January 1874, so we know the Searchers were out and about in this same year. Their disappearances were recent and the ship hasn't been empty for all that long, I don't think.
1865 — may this monument stand forever
On this site in 1835, Sir John Herschel and Anna Hanover launched the first brick satellite, the Sagitta, in what was known as Township Number Nine. Erected to commemorate their bravery, to thank them for their gift to all mankind, may this monument stand forever.
Dedicated August, 1865.
1864 — the dark angel appears
A desperate AJ makes his ill-fated deal with Kal in exchange for his crew's safety during the Battle of Mobile Bay.
Damn the torpedoes.
1835 — the beginning of our adventure
🎶 IT IS EIGHTEEN THIRTY-FIVE 🎶 and the Great Moon Hoax and The Brick Satellite both happen in this year. Things were so simple back then!
1829 — the Blazing World is destroyed
In 1874, we are told (first by Arvad's journal, and then by Sia) that their home, that the Blazing World was destroyed 45 years ago. If my math is right and they're not hippity-hopping too much in time (they have time travel capabilities so idk for sure) that would put the destruction of the Blazing World in 1829.
If the world being destroyed is also the Event that Kal alludes to in Gunpowder and Rum, pt. 3 ("Your powers are returning and you still don't remember what happened? 😒") AND it's the one that left Margaret without her memories and powers, then... could Margaret have been feeling lost, alone, and disconnected with her phantom pain in New York for 6 whole years before the Stratfords wrote the hoax that would bring the quartet together??? 🥺
And while we're on the subject of time passing!
If Sia and Kalfu and everyone besides the quartet has gotten to 1874 the long way 'round... (which I think is the case if Kal snarked at Sia for hiding Margaret in the future—if he has a sense of the future in relation to the world and time, I'd say this also implies he & the others have a pretty consistent present?) ...have they aged? Or does their magic also lengthen their lives? I imagine it would be mentioned if Sia was visibly older, and since Samuel described Kal as looking ~40 years old, then how could he be younger than the war he's been in? lol. But idk, this is just food for thought!
Kal Loves His Lore Dumps, Doesn't he? This one's mostly about Margaret <3
"You've proven quite elusive over the years... We've searched across the seven seas... I suppose it's only fitting that I find you here by chance, looking for an orrery! I'd have settled for the ship, what's its name? An-ti-ky-ther-a. But you will be quite the prize. It's you that will seal our victory! A ship from the Blazing World would have been quite the quarry. But you? That could end things once and for all!"
"The ship, the orrery, they don't matter now. Not when I can dispatch the two biggest traitors in history with just one blow!"
Seems like our girl is pretty special~ 🥰
I mean, of course she is, she's our Margaret, but if Kal is willing to let the Antikythera go to get her instead, and he's so convinced that taking her out will win the war... our girl is Pretty Special™ right? Maybe she's a princess or something, or maybe her Radiance is just that heckin' strong. idk, but I'm excited to find out either way.
I'm also wondering if there's a connection between Margaret and the orrery/orreries... If Kal thought it was fitting to find her when he was after the orrery, does that mean something more? Could Margaret have created the orreries and/or the magic behind them? 👀
...actually maybe this isn't such a good and fun thing. 😅😟 Things don't usually go very well for special and important characters—what is the saying, tragedies love heroes? I mean, Margaret has lost her powers and memories once already, as well as her home and whatever family she may have had before. I know all our pulp blorbos have been in dire straights a few times now, but I don't want them to get MORE DIRE than this!
Kalfu, Sia, & Margaret's history
Kal: High marks for cloaking the fleet, but seriously—
...
Kal: Come on, it's a Traveler reunion.
...
Kal: Just a drink between three friends.
...
Sia: Oh, you were once a man that I trusted. Tell me, where has he been?
...
Sia: Itzal poisoned your mind!
Kal: Itzal opened my mind!
...
Sia and Margaret: *powering up*
Sia: Hey, Kalfu!
Kal: Huh? Ugh, not again.
Kal: *team rocket fog's blasting off again*
I think it's pretty safe to say that, once upon a time, these three were once close. Maybe they were friends and peers, or maybe Kalfu was once Sia and/or Margaret's mentor with that "high marks" comment. Whatever the case, they used to be allies who trusted each other.
I think it's also safe to say all three of them are/were Travelers. Obviously Sia is, and Margaret probably is/was one as well, since she and Sia have a badass combined attack (that I'm betting they used against Kalfu ~45 years prior). As for Kal... I don't know how the radiance and the fog fit together exactly, whether they've always been separate or the fog is a dark bastardization of the radiance, but it seems like he is on equal footing with Sia as far as magic powers go, and he can teleport like they do—AJ witnessed this at the Battle of Mobile Bay, and Samuel did (kinda) on the deck of the Ellen Austin. I don't know if that's the only qualification for being a Traveler, but it's worth mentioning.
It seems like Itzal was a pretty big factor in this trio splitting up—for whatever reason, Kal turned his back on Sia and Margaret to follow him, or perhaps Sia and Margaret left Kal behind when he wouldn't leave with them. I don't know, but I want to—I have questions!!!
Sia and Itzal — Future sight?
Kal (to Sia): You know, for someone with precognitive abilities, you sure like to cut things close. 😒
...
Kal: How I wish King Itzal was here to witness this. Or did he already know? Eh.
There's not much to say about this, really, I just think it's interesting.
But it does make me wonder if Sia *knew* that sending Margaret and the others to Hanover in 1874 would lead Margaret to the Antikythera and help her regain her memories, even if Sia couldn't see much more than that. Like, if she knew that Kal would be there, I don't think she would have put Margaret at risk like that when she was still vulnerable. Unless she was betting on Margaret figuring things out before Kal could make his move... gah, who knows! (Matt. Matt knows.) We do know that Sia can't see everything, though—she knows that the crew of the Antikythera are gone but has to ask Kal what he did with them.
Also, obligatory "yikes 😬" at the idea of having an enemy (King Itzal) who could possibly see your attacks/plans before you make them. That can't make this war any easier!
Fogging the vortices, you say?
Kal: We've been fogging the vortices for decades. There was bound to be an Antikythera sooner or later.
Vortices.... plural for vortex, yeah?
"A mass of whirling fluid or air, especially a whirlpool or whirlwind."
Is one of these vortices located here in the Sargasso Sea? Is that why Rose already knows plenty of ghost stories about these waters, why this is a strange place that'll one day be dubbed the Bermuda Triangle? Where are the other vortices??? How many are there??? What are they, exactly???
Okay, but what about the gates?
Kal: A war for a world of power and might
Sia: A war for a world of courage and light
Kal: Fought over decades
Sia: Over ascension
Kal/Sia: No chance of surrender, no chance of redemption
I'm just throwing darts here, but I feel like 'ascension' has to do with the gates that have been alluded to a few times now?
First, in TBS, Sia told Margaret that she couldn't take her to the gate until her memories were back. Then in part 2 of TGOA, Kal said something about the Antikythera's orrery leading him to the first gate.
I don't think these gates are the same thing as the vortices—if the bad guys have already been 'fogging' them, then Kal wouldn't need an orrery to find them.
The gates probably lead to the Blazing World, right? Kal and Itzal want to destroy the Blazing World for good, which is why Kal was trying to get the orrery, to get to the gate, to ascend to the Blazing World and turn it to dust once and for all.
Travelers and Symbols/Elements/Associations
To finish up, here's one of the things I've noticed more recently. We have four magical characters now who seem to be at similar levels of power and might all be/have been Travelers, and maybe it's just a fun bit of flavor rather than anything Extremely Vital to the plot, but they each seem to have their own kind of... niche?
Lemme run through 'em real quick.
Kalfu—
● Want a drink?
● Gunpowder and rum, too strong for some! 🎶
● And poison... is kinda my thing.
● Non-lethal fog, my latest brew
Kal's easy to figure out—he's been pretty clear with his gunpowder and rum (delicious!) and once he revealed it he's been very cheeky and upfront about his use of/preference for poison too. He also stands out as the only person wielding fog, but I'm sure that'll change as we delve further into the dark and into this war we're learning about.
Sia—
● "Was that sunlight shining in the sphere?"
● We're here to light the fuse
● Lay another hand on her and you'll go down in flames
● I will always be that feeling burning under your skin
hehe okay, Sia is the reason this whole section of my post exists lol. I noticed the references to fire in enough of her lines/lyrics in part 3 that I thought it couldn't be a coincidence, and then I looked at the others. I just think it's neat!
Maybe these lines are just nods to the fact that light can burn as well as illuminate—Kalfu would probably know, hah—but it is fun to think that maybe we could see our first and dearest Traveler friend whip out some cool fire magic later on—when she's not duking it out with somebody on a wooden boat, lol.
I'd love that for her, tbh.
...especially because alcohol is flammable. :)
Ahlaam—
Narrator: In a blinding flash, a woman materialized, and with a single motion, she pushed the water of the room with her mind
Okay, I fully admit this is mostly just a reason for me to make another waterbending joke. Ahlaam's appearance in this episode wasn't really long enough to give us much information about her, but I mean we also haven't seen anyone else do anything with water until she came along, so... if we see her do more stuff like this and she has more associations with water in episode 4 onwards, I will feel pretty smart. 😌
Margaret—
● the moon
● the sea
● astronomy
we might not know much about Margaret's magic beyond how brightly it glows—which isn't unique to her—and what she's been able to do with it, be we do know that she has a connection with the moon, of course.
I think we could also argue that she has a pull to the sea—mostly because of the view from her window and the rooftop, overlooking the water. Learning about the Searchers and the fact that Kal was looking for Margaret on the sea supports this connection, but again, that doesn't really single her out from the others.
Margaret does have an appreciation for astronomy, but even that might not be super unique, if her people have orreries on every ship and they all look up to the sky. However... my brain is still chewing on a possible connection between Margaret and the orrery, because of what Kal said. It would be pretty rad if she was the one who designed and crafted them, figured out that magic. So idk, that could be something.
If her memories are returning, maybe we'll see her really start to shine amongst her fellow Travelers as she recalls more about herself and brings together the person that resides in her memories and the person that losing her memories made her into.
phew, okay! this is a long post and I am now very sleepy, lol. I'm sure I missed a few things—I didn't take any *literal* notes during parts 1 & 2 and it'll be a few days before I get the album and lose my mind again—but maybe there's a few things I managed to catch that y'all will enjoy.
As always, feel free to reply/reblog with your own thoughts!!!

Fic Tag Game!!
How many works do you have on AO3?
25!
What’s your AO3 word count?
109,751
What fandoms do you write for?
Star Wars (haven't in a while tho), Wednesday, and I used to write for Hamilton. I also have a single fic for ATLA and Daredevil, and I'm currently writing a few fics for The Phantom of the Opera, HTTYD, Freelancers, and several other fandoms I can't remember ATM (I have that many WIPs LOL)
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
The Valentine's Day Curse (Wednesday)
"send your cutest delivery boy" (special instructions, Tyler's POV) (Wednesday) (which was based on the fic by @cosmic-lullaby!)
wet face towels (Wednesday)
can I have this dance? (Wednesday)
My Halloween Angel (Wednesday)
Do you respond to comments?
I do!! I try to respond to every single one of them, though I'm a little backlogged rn LOL
What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I think it would have to either be stupid, stupid cartoon (Wednesday. Basically a what if Tyler died, and how would Donovan react?), or The Bonds of Lycanthropy (a Hamilton AU where he turns into a werewolf LOL)
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I think a lot of my fics end pretty happy, but I think one of the happiest ones is Angels In Hell's Kitchen (Daredevil. About Matt Murdock having a good day for once).
Do you get hate on fics?
Thankfully no! And I'm praying it stays that way 😅🙏
Do you write smut? What kind?
Nope. And I never will 😅 makes me much too uncomfortable (I never read it either). Both because that's just how I am personally and for religious reasons. But I do love writing wholesome romance!
Do you write cross-overs?
I do! I only posted one tho, and that was literally the first fic I ever wrote 😭 it was a crossover between Newsies and In the Heights, where Jack and Usnavi run away from New York. I do have several crossover WIPs though!! Including but not limited to: a Narnia/The Hobbit crossover, a Narnia/His Dark Materials crossover, a HTTYD/Wings of Fire crossover, and a Daredevil/Batman crossover!
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I can't remember, but I think it's possible I have before? When my main site was still Fanfiction.net?
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have!! But they aren't done yet 😭 but I'm writing them with @the-old-fashioned-girl! It's the Daredevil/Batman crossover, as well as a Hamilton fic!
What WIP would you like to finish but doubt you ever will?
Oh gosh, I don't want to ever think I'll NEVER finish a WIP, don't do that to me! I wanna say I'll finish all of the ones I want to finish eventually!!
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Oh goodness, that's hard... probably Hiccstrid, Raoulstine, Silverparry, and Wyler!
What are your writing strengths?
I'm a pretty fast writer, I think. When I finally sit down and set my mind to it, I can easily get out a thousand+ words!
What are your writing weaknesses?
EDITING MY BELOATHED. And actually sitting down and starting to write...
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I think it's really cool when done well!! I've done it for Lafayette in some Hamilton fics, and I want to try using Tagalog in another fic someday! I'm also using sign language for my Deaf!Raoul AU!
First fandom you wrote for?
Like, wrote for, or actually posted? Because wrote for in general, it might be Ninjago but I never posted it. But published, Newsies and In The Heights LOL. But the one I posted frequently for first was Hamilton.
Favorite fic you’ve ever written?
Dang, that's hard. Possibly Talking To The Moon (Avatar: The Last Airbender)! I like how I tackled both Toph and Sokka in it :DD
No Pressure Tags!!: @rainintheevening, @clawedandcute, @darling-gemini, @chaotic-bumblebee-agenda, @mrgartist, @catkin-morgs-kookaburralover, @wednesdayandherhyde, @thee-antler-queen, @broken-everlark, @incomingalbatross and @muse-write!

As a follow-up to my let people use fanfiction as narrative therapy post I would also like to state for the record:
Ain’t nothing wrong with self insert fanfiction. Or Mary Sue OCs that are basically self inserts. Also nothing wrong with people writing ‘bad’ fanfiction that has nothing to do with the canon really. I don’t give a shit. People are making art and that’s awesome. I may not read stuff that isn’t to my personal tastes, but I am Glad people are making their art regardless. Especially young people. Especially people who are otherwise new to writing. Hell yeah, Make Art.
One thing I have noticed about fandom on tumblr is that in very large fandoms with mass appeal, there are often a lot of kids and youths and young folk watching or reading and thus wanting to create transformative art about it. This also means that a high concentration of fic may tend more towards having less to do with the actual canon of the thing and being more focused on whatever those kids really wanted to write or read about it. To discuss one specific example, the largest subsection of fandom that currently exists around the DC batman franchises on this site is the batfam fandom, a fandom comprised mostly of younger fans who are fans more of the platonic ideal of batman and his adopted kids and close associates that only really exists in their own works and also the webtoon**** For most of those people the appeal is the found family aspect, and that’s what they want to read and write about. Hell yeah. Good for them. At least they’re writing. At least they’re making art.
****I know there are a lot of people in the batman comics fandom that have serious issues with the webtoon and the way that dc comics publishing agendas have begun to reflect more what people on the internet are talking about and less coherent storytelling that makes sense based on past canon. And this is a very fair criticism.
But this is not a problem limited to dc. This is a problem of all major production companies who produce art for mass release. TV shows being written in response to what people say on reddit has been ruining creative endeavors in an obvious way at least since Game of Thrones was airing. Books being published based on what will be popular on tiktok derived from the popularity of some frankly terrible novels (yes I do mean acotar) leads to some absolute drivel on the best seller list. Of course the comics industry is also fucking things up the same way.
Your enemy there are not the young fans new to fandom who are just discovering writing fanfiction and doing so by writing about whatever interests them most. Please stop blaming kids and other people who aren’t writing fanfiction close enough to your concept of canon for this problem, it is far bigger than that.
Let people make their maybe bad art in peace. Everyone has to make bad art on the road to learning how to make better art. I am glad they are making their art regardless.
Also no shade meant to those fans this is just an observation and I wish you all well, but I do find it a little funny that the people who Are experts on the dc comics canon who I have seen criticize the existence of the batfam fandom on here are also usually like ‘this is my favorite character, I hate every single run this character has ever been in except this one from 30 years ago and five panels of this one run that got cancelled early.’ Like, you don’t really like most of the canon you wish other people would familiarize themselves with right? Give new fans a chance to want to learn more about it. Most of the fans in that circle are pretty young, they’re gonna have kinda bad taste sometimes and that’s fine and good actually. They’ll grow out of it and maybe some of them will come to know the comics canon more closely.
This is also why even though I am vocal about personally disliking the works of SJM (acotar my beloathed) and its impact on the publishing industry, I am honestly happy for anyone that read those books and enjoyed them. Same for every other book I don’t like. If you read it and get something out of it hell yeah good for you. I was unironically into twilight for many years as a teen I am not here to pass judgement on teens or anyone for that matter for what they enjoy.
Most big fandoms I have dipped my toes into have this same problem. If there are a lot of young people in that fandom, there’s gonna be a lot of fanfic that is written by people just learning to write, and that’s great, I love that actually, good for them. But those are always the fandoms where I see people being perhaps more vitriolic than necessary towards other fans for not being up to snuff. Let people make art that you don’t think is good, please. It’s fine actually. If you don’t like it you don’t have to read it. Just be glad someone is making art that makes them happy and move on.

Hi! Sorry if this is a really dumb question or one you've answered before, but how do you know so much about politics? No one I know looks closer than Fox News or TikTok/Facebook and I legitimately don't know how to learn more. Are there certain websites or journalists that I should look into? Any books you'd recommend for a good overview of American politics? I'm sorry again if this is a dumb question and you don't have to answer if you don't want to!
It’s not a dumb question at all! For me personally, I know a lot because I have worked in politics or politics-adjacent fields for the majority of my adult life (although I also had really good history and government teachers in middle and high school that sparked an interest). I have a graduate degree in public policy and some of my course work was taught by people who at one time held very high offices. I’ve also worked on campaigns for ballot initiatives and similar measures at the state and local level, I’ve drafted legislation and met with legislators and staff to do direct advocacy and lobbying work, I’ve worked for stakeholders in in broad coalitions for different advocacy and activist communities so I’ve been exposed to the nuances of strategy development and coalition building through those types of efforts…basically I have a lot of personal experience and also connections that inform my general knowledge base and perspective on certain topics (like how government works in general but when it comes to a few specific policy areas I can get very in the weeds).
One important question to keep in mind is, what’s your goal? Because the level of investment (even if maybe not the approach) may vary depending on whether you just want to be generally informed or if you have specific policy issues that you’re really invested in and want to follow or if you’re interested in advocacy work or even running for office, etc.
But as far as staying current and informed, I think the first thing to say would be that you absolutely should not be getting your news from social media. I have a love-hate relationship with the beltway media for prioritizing clicks over honest journalism, but if you’re looking for general high-level information about “things happening at the federal level” and aren’t able to commit to a paid subscription, I would look at the AP, CNN, NPR, the Guardian. I have beef with Politico but it’s also an option. If you are willing to invest in a paid subscription to NYT and/or WaPo, I recommend it. (I’m slightly less helpful on this point because these days my initial daily news dump comes from various subscription-based legal news outlets that I have access to through my job). For state and local news, I’d look into newspapers for your region on top of the national outlets because national outlets are simply not going to cover absolutely everything going on in a specific state and especially a city. I would also say in general that it’s important to get your news from a number of different sources so you don’t end up in an echo chamber of, for example, just Fox News or MSNBC, and to be aware of the biases of a particular outlet. There are a lot of free “news” sites on both the far right and far left that exist basically just to further an agenda and spread lies about both Democrats and how government works (the Intercept, my most beloathed). On a similar note, when you do see people sharing articles on social media (or making random outlandish claims), pay attention to what they’re sharing or what sources they’re citing to back up their claims because it’s really easy to spread misinformation and even well-meaning people can do so. Also important to pay attention to the types of articles you’re reading, which may sound obvious but I’ve seen way too many people be like “well I read this in an opinion piece so it must be true” and…no. I have more that I could say that’s specific to candidate and election research but that’s a little bit different.
As far as books…everything I have ever read has just flown out of my head. But I would point you towards @mariacallous and @dhaaruni both of whom are brilliant and have excellent taste in reading materials and might have some recs.

first of all - thank you so much for the ask, friend! 🥰 all the love ❤️ secondly, though... *gnashes teeth* tumblr. my beloathed. i fucking hate you sometimes. 'cause like... i had BEAUTIFUL replies typed up for this. genuinely beautiful and funny and insightful and all. and then as i hit post, guess what? tumblr :) ate :) them :) so now i'm on my gf's laptop instead of mobile, hoping for the best LOL 👌
18. Do you enjoy research?  Which fic of yours required the most research?
for me, research is one of the BEST parts of fic writing! 😍 it always makes me laugh so much to go back and look at my google search history afterwards - like, without context, it's SO weird, hahaha! i'm someone who loves learning new things, though, so for me the actual research part is *chef's kiss.* especially because what i end up researching is never something i'd usually stumble over in my day-to-day musings? so it's inevitably fascinating, and yeah, i more often than not find myself elbows-deep in the wormhole of this link goes to that site where i click that link about this again and and and -- yeah lmao 🙈 but i love it a lot!
as for which fic of mine required the most research - oh, that would have to be love's a game, wanna play? aka my super self-indulgent fake dating au wip. for this one, i've ended up researching everything from french chateaux to french wedding traditions to outdoors treasure hunt ideas to outlandish fascinator designs. yep. and there'll be even more insanity to come, i'm sure 😆 SO much fun though, truly.
35. What’s your favourite fic you’ve posted?
this is actually quite a tricky one, mostly because i've only posted, what, four fics in this fandom 😂 and they are all pretty self-indulgent, so trying to pick a favourite is like trying to choose only one favourite fanfic trope. i could never really do it! however, if i have to single one out for you: ils se connaissent par coeur will always have a special place in my heart, for several reasons. firstly because it's the first fic i ever wrote in this fandom, and coincidentally also the first fic i've published in about seven years. secondly, it's also the one where i first tested out pierre and charles' voices, and looking back on it now? i am genuinely very proud of the character work i did in it. also, y'know. it's post-monaco hurt/comfort. #katiecore. what more can i say.
51. Does what you like to write differ from what you like to read?
this is a great question! and for me personally, at least, the answer is no. i've had experiences where i completely lose all interest and motivation in a fandom because i was writing too much of what other people wanted, and not enough of what i enjoyed. so for this fandom, i'm being the most self-indulgent writer imaginable, LOL. literally, all my ideas go something along the lines of "damn i really feel like reading this specific fic now... oh there isn't one 😔 *thanos voice* i'll do it myself, then." prime example? my fake dating au. i'm writing it exactly the way i'd love to read it if i could, and making myself laugh like an idiot, and you know what? i am having the BEST time.
Tumblr media
thank you so much for asking! 😍 i really enjoyed answering these (after tumblr stopped being a giant fucking arsewipe, LMAO.) hugs!! 🥰

etre et avoir - passé composé : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJE8AFfhlwQ
personnal pronoun (P) + auxiliary "avoir" (A) in present tense + present perfect (participe passé = PP)
P + A + PP
Tu + as + eu (2nd person of the singular, verbe "avoir")
Tu + as + été (2nd person of the singular, verbe "être")
(kinda horrible to understand but basically the first column is the pronoun, the second one is always the same (ai, as, a, avons, avez, ont), and the the third one is the same conjugaison)
participe passé : https://dictionnaire.lerobert.com/guide/participe-passe
verbs of the 1st group (ending with -er) : will end with -é
ex : chanter = chanté / manger = mangé / jeter = jeté
j'ai chanté / tu as mangé / nous avons jeté
verbs of the 2nd group (ending with -ir) : will end with -i
ex : finir = fini / dormir = dormi / réfléchir = réfléchi
J'ai fini / tu as dormi / nous avons réfléchi
verbs of the 3rd group : all the rest, ending with -oir, -re etc : will end with -i, -u, -t, is... (I guess you just have to know them?)
ex : perdre = perdu / voir = vu / finir = fini
J'ai perdu / tu as vu / nous avons fini
"être" and "avoir" are exceptions
Good luck, even I had to check how to do it... tbh we learn grammar rules in school but then you just forgot them and do everything by instinct or memory (or, a lot of ppl are really bad at ortograph and conjugaison, a LOT of ppl write "j'ai chanter" or "tu as manger" and it hurts the eye lmao)

Thank you ;-; And thanks for the dictionary site! The french have a letonika (lv dictionary site) too, life is so easy now kkkkk! ill make sure to use it a lot.
I was mostly confused about when to use which one, though this ask helped me organise my understanding of the participals. As far as i understood it, être is for reflexive verbs and the rest you just kinda learn. Some verbs use both avoir and être and those you also just kinda learn. Ill keep trying until i "just kinda learn" it, even if i have to write down every verb conjugation ever.
And i feel that last bit so hard lol. In latvian there arent many exceptions, but some rules are so niche or rarely used that even news sites get the grammar wrong. Savādāk my beloathed. But difficult grammar is my favourite thing, i will love passé composé when i learn it i just know it. Thanks again anon <3

hiii it’s french uni anon again lol (we can talk in private if you’re more comfortable w that btw I just didn’t want to slide in uninvited) anyway omg I feel you! parcoursup is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me fr fr. the whole thing was dreadful, utterly mortifying and downright harrowing to go through and seeing/writing “projets motivés” has permanently instilled a twitch in my left eye. it didn’t help that I procrastinated and waited until the 7th to start but I fully blame the site, it felt Hostile and I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life :/ anyway agh I forgot what u asked lmaoo but it feels so Good to talk abt it w someone new! (I don’t live in france so apart from my classmates no one really Understands) ANYWAY thank u for answering, enjoy your spring break!! xx
projets motivés my beloathed my mortal enemies... the website kept on crashing when i was trying to finish everything that was sooo annoying. i hate parcoursup in general as in like the way it works it's so bad. the way the french government is handling schools is just terrible. i asked what you applied for, but we can talk about it in private if you feel more comfortable! also feel free to just slide in uninvited whenever you want i like talking to people :-)

Oh I think the history of cherp/cherub plus msparp would be incredibly interesting to me. I think it would be incredibly hard to document outside if a he said she said context and honestly if it weren't so much work I'd do it myself. I enjoy telling my friends untouched by homestuck what happens sometimes. If it's a project you decide to dive in yourself I'd love to support it
I absolutely agree.
I think if I were to do a complete history of Cherp/Parp, as it were, my goal would probably end up being
-Map out a readable timeline of the site from then to now. This would include, but possibly not be limited to; when each site started and died, how each site worked on a functional level upon introduction and when new features and rules were introduced. When the sites changed hands or ownerships. The aftermath of killings like the original cherubplay, and the cropping and inevitable dying of roleplay servers that came up as a result of it.
-document the ongoing drama surrounding the community of the time, how the community reacted to each change, be it in rules or hands. Prominent players in each community drama. Prominent groups of the time, And where each drama was located (Tumblr tag and/or Skype chat)
-link how each drama crop-up was in large part due to the communities connection with Homestuck. How it connected to larger Homestuck drama at the time (for cherubplay) and how it evolved into what it is today. Which drama isn't necessarily Homestuck related, but larger fandom discussion that has intensified over the years (Discussion of allowing noncon, incest, ect on site and how there has been similiar discussion of the matter about ao3). Show each Side of that arguement, and what people eventually moved onto.
-who the owner of each site was at the time, as well as community perception of them, and how they interacted with the community if at all. This goes for mods as well, in sides that need them.
-prominent onsite figures, beloved and beloathed. Fart fetish dave. Cow Jane. Holocaust Karkat. Finding these prompts (I still have the cow Jane prompt buried in one of my group chats, iirc) Community reception of these prompts, and legacy of them. When they cropped up and when they stopped showing up?
And most importantly
-be as non-bias as possible. Even if I have placed a knife down on the tag before, and did so recently, when accounting and documenting history and cultures of sites I would want to place very heavy importance in not demonizing either side, or showing either side as being in the right or wrong. It would have it be, at it's core, a retelling of events in it's entirety.
It would be hard to do, but not entirely impossible. I would need the most help with msparp-mxrp era drama, as I am the least informed there, and what has happened over the last year or two. In regards to cherubplay drama, it is with great shame and forwardness that I am upfront with the fact that I was one of the key players in this. Uh. I was also 14, in the cherubplay era. Having said that, I have a lot of the drama saved on my old blog, undeleted and just sitting there. And also untagged. Eesh.
But. I have been there literally since the site opened. It wouldn't be impossible. Just difficult.
Hm.
Another issue would be that it might be hard to do this without stepping on toes. Approaching it non-bias would maybe negate some of that, and in the cherubplay days a lot of the people have moved on to other things. But it would be something to consider, I think
