Police investigating rash of car break-ins in Playa del Rey, Venice area

PLAYA DEL REY, LOS ANGELES -- Residents in Playa del Rey and neighboring communities are fed up and taking their frustrations to social media following a rash of car break-ins.

The Los Angeles Police Department said it has received reports of at least three vehicles that have been broken into in Venice. Another break-in was reported along 88th Place in Playa del Rey.

In one incident that occurred overnight, the suspect was caught on surveillance video.

"The guy walked up and he looked directly at my camera, which was hilarious," said Trent Marlow, whose car was broken into in Playa del Rey. "Then he pulled his mask up a little bit more, and then he hit it and picked it up, put it on top, there's some still glass up here."

In the video, the suspect is seen shattering the window then placing the glass on top of the car before rummaging the inside. Moments later, the suspect moves on to the next vehicle, repeating the process.

Marlow said he first noticed the damage Thursday morning.

"My car window was shattered then I noticed my neighbor's car window was shattered," he said. "Then another neighbor's car window, then another, then another, a total of five on this street. Then walking down that street, there was more glass on the ground, more cars shattered."

But nothing was taken. Several other neighbors shared the same story.

"I came out to my car. My driver's side window is completely shattered," said a victim who did not wish to be identified. "I just immediately started crying. You feel so violated."

Neighbors said they're glad nothing was taken, but said they want the suspect or suspects caught.

"I didn't go to work today and then I have to go get it fixed tomorrow and I had a quote a bunch of shops to fix it and ... just a pain," said Marlow.

Body found in abandoned U-Haul truck in Mid-City is identified by medical examiner

MID-CITY, LOS ANGELES -- A body that was found in the back of an abandoned U-Haul truck on a street in Mid-City has been identified as a 50-year-old man, officials announced Friday.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's office identified the deceased as Henry Jernigan.

The grim discovery was made sometime before 11 a.m. Thursday in the 2400 block of Redondo Boulevard, a residential street just north of the 10 Freeway.

The vehicle, a moving truck measuring at least 15 feet, had been reported stolen, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD Lt. Robert Peters said the truck was parked on the street and when the owners arrived to retrieve it, they discovered what they believed were human remains. Police were then notified.

China’s manufacturing official PMI has remained in contraction since March 2023, with only a brief exception in September of the previous year. Analysts, including Ting Lu, Chief China Economist at Nomura, anticipate the weak growth momentum to persist into March. Lu forecasts China’s first-quarter GDP growth to be 4.0% year-on-year, a notable slowdown compared to the 5.2% pace recorded in the fourth quarter of the previous year. As China faces internal challenges, such as a property crisis and consumer spending hesitation, external challenges, including global conflicts, further hamper the economic outlook.

Mixed Indicators and Future Policy Actions

While new export orders have contracted for 11 consecutive months, the official non-manufacturing PMI, encompassing services and construction, rose to 51.4 from 50.7 in January, marking its highest reading since September last year. However, construction activity saw a slight decline, signaling ongoing challenges in the property sector. Policymakers, acknowledging the need for further support, cut the reserve requirement ratio for banks on February 5, releasing substantial liquidity. Government Imposes 20% Tax on Parboiled Rice for an Uncertain Period.

The government of India has decided to add an extra 20% export tax on parboiled rice exports from the 31st of March onwards. India, the biggest exporter of parboiled rice globally, might continue charging a tax on this type of rice to help control food prices before the Lok Sabha elections. This could make it harder for other countries to get enough rice and could make prices go even higher.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who wants to be elected for a third time in the upcoming elections, is thinking about keeping the tax on exports at 20%. They're not planning to stop exporting parboiled rice altogether.

Earlier in August 2023, the government had imposed a 20% export tax on the same. The tax was supposed to end on March 31st, but now they might extend it. With the latest order increased export tax will resume without an end date. This move is made to hold on to enough local stock for the hassle-free supply of domestic usage.

Apart from the tax on rice export, the tax-free import of yellow peas has also been sanctioned. Moreover, it is extended past 31st March. The order is subject to the condition that the bill of landing should be on or before 30th April 2024.

It is positive to see India's retail inflation easing to 5.10 per cent annually, especially after reaching a four-month high of 5.69 per cent in December. Data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has revealed so. In the past month, all kinds of rice saw a 10% decrease rate within the surging supply in the market. With the help of government policies, the staple food grain was made more accessible for the Indian Households.

The government has put a tax on exporting all types of non-basmati rice until October 16, 2023. They've also limited the export of non-basmati white rice. About a quarter of all rice exported from India is this type. Last year, India made around $4.8 billion selling basmati rice, about 45.6 lakh tonnes of it, to be precise.

The Finance Minister said in her budget speech that the government's actions have helped control rising prices, especially for things that have short shelf life. From April to December last year, the prices of regular commodities went up less than before. Now, the prices are steady and not going up too fast.
