Sunday Snippet
Got some inspiration for a post-war story down the road (like 15-20 years after the war) for Caleb and Kaidan, and this is part of the scene that came to me this past week.
~~~
He’d been sitting at Caleb’s side long enough now to recognize the different footfalls as people entered the hospital room.
Soft, steady, no hesitation – Susan Nichols, the head nurse on the overnight staff and usually the one who made sure Kaidan had a blanket to cover his shoulders.
Authoritative with just the slightest awkward scuffing squeak of rubber against linoleum due to the hitch in his step thanks to his injury while serving – Richie Velasquez was on the morning shift; always sporting a smile as bright and cheery as a sunny day in Vancouver.
A barely audible sigh as the door whooshed open and found him in the same place as always; Niamh was otherwise silent. “Papa?”
After the first week or so, Kaidan had switched his chair to the opposite side of the bed so he faced the doorway, though he rarely pulled his attention from his husband when anyone came in. He preferred to keep one eye on Caleb's motionless form at all times while the other pulled details from his periphery to determine what threat he was about to face.
Ultimate MBTI Fictional Characters List
Disclaimer: whenever I’m refering to a literary character, I am going to specify the name of the author of the literary work that he belongs to and its original publication date; instead, whenever I’m refering to a cinematic or a tv character, I’m going to specify only the period of time in which the movie or tv show I’m talking about was on air. Therefore there might be cases where a single character appears in multiple categories, depending on whether I’m refering to the original character or its movie/tv adaptation one.
USO
Akda nina: Alejandrino, Sofia; Velasquez, Nichole; Fermin, Benedicto Jr.
Tema/Isyu: Over-consumption
Bili, gamit, tapon— iyan ang gawain ng mga tao sa taong 3025. Sa bansang Estados Unidos ang may pinakamalalang kaso ng pagkonsumo. Karamihan sa mga naninirahan sa US ay mayayaman at may kaya-kaya. Araw-araw, ang mga bagay na ibinibenta sa mga mall ay pinapalitan kaagad ng mga bagong dating na produkto. Ang pasok ng pera ay mabilis at lubos na yumayaman ang lahat ng negosyante. Ngunit ano ang magagawa mo kung ipinanganak kang mahirap sa isang bansang ganid sa yaman at pagkonsumo?
Sa gilid ng kalye ay makikitang nag-iisang naglalakad ang isang batang babae. Ang kanyang damit ay hindi angkop sa kasalukuyang klima— taglamig at makikitang ang kanyang mga kalamnan ay naninigas sa lamig. Dumiretso ang batang babae sa isang bahay na mayroong isang napupunding ilaw at sira-sirang haligi. Doon ay makikita ang kanyang mga magulang, ang kanyang nanay at tatay.
Si Magi, labindalawang taong gulang na batang babae, ay kadalasang tahimik lamang at sumusunod sa mga utos ng magulang niya, galing siya sa pamilyang may trabaho ngunit hindi sapat ang suweldo upang buhayin sila. Ang kanyang mga magulang ay araw-araw na nagtatrabaho upang siya ay mapag-aral. Gigising ng ikaapat ng umaga ang kanyang mga magulang upang maghanda at sa ganap na ikalima ay aalis na sa kanilang tahanan. Habang si Magi ay pupunta naman sa kanyang eskwelahan.
Tuwing papasok sa eskwelahan si Magi, makikita niya ang mga kaklase niya na palaging may bagong mga gamit. Laging kinukutya si Magi dahil palagi na lang siyang wala sa uso. Kadalasan sa araw-araw ay magkakapareho ng damit ang kanyang mga kaklase. Sa araw na ito, ang lahat ng kababaihan ay nakasuot ng pulang sapatos, puting damit na umaabot sa tuhod ang palda at isang malaking dilaw na ribbon sa kanilang ulo, samantalang si Magi lamang ang naiiba.
Isang malabo na masa lamang ang nakita ni Magi nang siya ay pumasok sa silid-aralan. Ang daldal ng mga ka mag-aral niya ay naging mga titig at bulong. Nakaramdam si Magi ng kahihiyan. Ang ibang mga babae ay lumapit sa kanya at pinaglaruan ang kanyang damit, "Ano 'yang suot mo, Magi?" Sinabi nila habang ipinapakita ang kanilang mga bestida at bow. Walang sinabi ang kawawang babae. Hinila nila ang kanyang buhok habang pinagtatawanan siya, ang mga lalaki pagkatapos ay sumali sa pagtawa. Sa ilang segundo ay puno na ng tawanan ang silid-aralan.
Dito nalaman ni Magi ang salitang inggit. Ang inggit na naramdaman niya ang magbibigay-daan sa pagkonsumo sa kanya ng sistema.
Pagkauwi niya ay dali-dali siyang pumunta sa kanyang nanay at tatay upang sabihin na gusto niya ng pulang sapatos, puting damit, at dilaw na ribbon. “Ma, pwede bang bilhan mo ako nito?”, ang sabi niya. Sa una’y nagtataka ang kanyang mga magulang dahil hindi sila sanay na humihiliing si Magi ng kanyang gusto. Ngunit sa dulo’y pumayag din sila.
Kinabukasan, natutuwang pumasok si Magi sa eskwelahan nang nakapulang sapatos, puting damit, at dilaw na ribbon sa pag-aakalang ganito rin ang susuotin ng lahat. Ngunit, hanggang sa ngayon, siya pa rin ang naiiba. Ang kahapong uso ay natapon na ngayon.
“Ano iyang pinagsusuot mo Magi?”
“Hindi mo ba alam na kahapon pa iyan? Wala nang kwenta yan.”
“Ganyan ba kahirap ang pamilya mo, pati mga nasuot na binibili pa rin? ” ani ng kanyang mga kaklase sabay hablot ng kanyang ribbon.
Tumblr media
Sa sandaling iyon ay para bang nawalan ng pag-asa muli si Magi, na kahit kailan ay hindi siya tatanggapin ng kahit sino.
Dali-daling umuwi si Magi nang marinig ang tunog ng kampanang naghuhudyat ng pagtatapos ng klase. Hinarap niya ang kanyang mga magulang at saka sinabing gusto niya ng mga damit na uso para bukas. Isang galit na pananalita ang lumabas sa kanyang bibig. Nagulat ang kanyang mga magulang dahil hindi ito ang Magi na kilala nila. Dahil sa pag-aalala nila sa kanya ay um-oo na lamang sila at nangakong bibilhin ang gusto niya.
Araw-araw ay nababago ang mga nauuso, araw-araw din ay magpapabili si Magi ng kanyang gusto. Hindi lamang damit ang napapalitan sa araw-araw, kasama na rin ang mga porselas, bag, pagkain, at mga inumin na ginugusto niya sa kabila ng kanilang katayuan.
Simula noong sumabay sa uso si Magi ay tinatanggap na siya ng kanyang mga kaklase. Sinasamahan siya tuwing magtatanghalian na, pati na rin sa pagpunta sa mga banyo. Bago ang lahat ng ito kay Magi, kaya natutuwa siya nang husto, at sa wakas ay naging parte na siya ng isang bagay. Nahuhumaling siya rito.
Matapos ang unang klase nila Magi ay niyaya siya ng isa niyang kaibigan na kumain. “Magi, tara na at sabay tayong kumain!”, “Sige, halika na.” sagot naman ni Magi. Habang kumakain sila, napansin ng kaibigan ni Magi ang bago niyang suot na sapatos at sinabing, “Wow! Magi, ang ganda naman ng bago mong sapatos. Iyan yung ipinalabas sa T.V. kahapon diba?” sabi ng kabigan ni Magi. ”Oo! Bagong bili ito ng aking mga magulang,”, ”Ayy, ganon ba? Nabalitaan ko din na may bagong sapatos na ilalabas bukas kaya’t nagpabili na ako kay mommy.”, ”Ah iyon ba? Nabalitaan ko rin iyon at nagpabili na rin ako.” sagot ni Magi sa kaibigan niya.
Hanggang sa isang araw, isang bagong nauuso na naman ang lumabas. Isang inumin.  Sinasabi nilang sasaya ka kapag ininom mo ito. Alam ng magulang ni Magi na matutuwa ang kanilang anak kung bibilhin nila ito, kaya’t dali-dali silang pumunta sa pinakamalapit na tindahan. Pagdating nila ay marami nang tao ang nakapila at sabik na sabik matikman ang nasabing inumin. Lumipas ang tatlo’t kalahating oras ng paghihintay— sa wakas ay sila na rin ang nasa unahan.
“Gusto naming kunin yung in-order ng nasa harapan namin. Tatlong piraso.” Sabi ng nanay. “480 dolyar.” Malamig na sagot ng nagtitinda. Napatingin ang mag-asawa sa isa’t isa. Alam nilang hindi sapat ang dala nila, “ Isa na lang ho.” Tugon ng tatay. “160.” Sagot ng tindera. Napalagay ng kamay sa ulo ang tatay habang pinagmamasdan ang kanyang asawang kinakalikot at tinitignan ang bawat sulok ng kanilang pitaka. Kulang— hindi sapat ang dala nila kahit na isa na lamang ang bibilhin nila. “Bibili ba kayo?” Sigaw ng tindera. Nagpasensya ang mag-asawa at saka dali-daling umalis. Sa paglalakad ng mag-asawa ay pareho silang nag-aalala kung saan makahahanap ng nasabing inumin. Ayaw nilang nalulungkot at nagagalit ang kanilang nag-iisang anak, kaya’t desperado silang makahanap ng mapagkukunan nito.
Sa gilid ng kalye ay makikitang nag-iisang naglalakad ang isang batang babae. Ang kanyang damit ay hindi angkop sa kasalukuyang klima— taglamig at makikitang ang kanyang mga kalamnan ay naninigas sa lamig. Dumiretso ang batang babae sa isang bahay na walang ilaw at sira-sirang haligi. Doon ay makikita ang kanyang magulang, ang kanyang tatay.
Nakita nilang may dala-dala itong supot ang batang babae. Sa loob ng supot ay dalawang inumin— ang inumin na ito ay pareho sa inuming nais nilang bilhin. Kaya’t napagpasyahan nila na kunin at nakawin na lamang ang mga inumin. Plinano nilang pumasok sa bahay at palihim na kunin ang supot.
Tumblr media
Dahan-dahan binuksan ng tatay ang bintana kung saan ang supot na naglalaman ng mga inumin ay malapit. Walang ingay at buong ingat na inabot ng mag-asawa ang supot ng inumin. Subalit, sa kasamaang palad ay hindi nila inaasahang may biglang tumahol na aso at nagising ang magtatay. Nagmamadaling hinablot ng mag-asawa ang supot at tumakbo pauwi sa bahay.
Hating-gabi na noon, kaya’t tulog na si Magi. Pagkauwi ng mga magulang niya, binuksan nila ang pinto sa kanilang tahanan ng dahan-dahan upang hindi magising ang kanilang anak. Sa dala nilang supot ay makikita ang dalawang lata. Para ito sa kanilang anak pero para bang may nag-uudyok sa kanilang inumin ito. Dali-dali, ang mag-asawa ay pumunta sa kusina para buksan ang mga lata. Sa isang lagok, ang mag-asawa ay sabay na nakadama ng pagdilim ng paligid.
Kinabukasan ay bumangon si Magi dahil sa ingay na nanggagaling sa labas. Nanggaling ang mga ingay na iyon sa mga sirena ng ambulansya. Tumingin si Magi sa labas, at ang nakita niya ay ibang mundo kumpara sa dati niyang nakagisnan. Maingay ang mga sirena, madumi ang paligid, nagtatambakan ang lahat ng mga gamit ngunit ni isa ay wala siyang makitang tao.
Lumabas siya para tingnan pa ang nangyayari. Naghahanap siya ng pwedeng tanungin, ngunit siya lang ang tao na nasa labas. Nagikot-ikot pa siya at nakita niya ang mga gamit niya dati na nakakalat sa kalsada, sinundan niya iyon hanggang sa napadpad siya sa isang lugar, at doon nakita niya ang isang malaking butas. Isang malaking butas na para bang daanan ito papasok sa loob ng kawalan. Nakita niya ang isang telebisyon sa gilid, gumagana pa ito ngunit pa putol-putol ang sinasabi, kaya hinampas niya ito para gumana. Sa ikatlong hampas ay umayos ang signal ng telebisyon. Nakita niya ang nakatigil na screen ng balita, kung saan, sinasabi na katapusan na ng mundo, ngunit naputol ito noong sinasabi na ang dahilan. Nawalan na ng pag-asa si Magi.
Bigla na lamang nagbago ang nakalagay sa screen ng telebisyon. Lumabas ang komersyal ng bagong inumin na sinasabing nagbibigay ng kaligayahan sa kung sino man ang iinom nito. Sa taas ng telebisyon ay mapapansin ang kaparehong inumin. Kinuha ito ni Magi at pinagmasdan nang mabuti. “Katapusan na lang din naman ng mundo, hindi naman makakasama kung iinumin ko ito.”
At nagdilim ang paningin ni Magi.
[TASK 075: MEXICO]
There’s a masterlist below compiled of over 580+ Mexican faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever character or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK -  examples are linked!
Elizabeth Jennings
Stoic but with a beating heart, vicious, competent as shit, loving in her own manner, deeply gray and amoral, Complicated “Emotionless” Bitch™️ in a way women on TV aren’t often allowed. And hot as shit.
Lena Greco and Lila Cerullo
Let me tell you, if you want some complicated fucking female friendships (slash borderline more if you squint), these two, from Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan quartet, are Good Shit. Two girls growing up in a whirlwind of poverty, misogyny, unequal educational opportunities, and crime in Naples, from the 1950s to the present day: the ways in which society fucks them over, they fuck themselves over, they fuck each other over (intentionally and unintentionally), they scheme to make their positions better, they love each other, and they hate each other are breath-taking, and the world they inhabit is insanely rich and atmospheric and wonderful. Probably the best books I read this year.
Abigail Griffin
Tenacious, hopeful, loving, gritty at times, competent as hell, a leader amongst all men and women. A Mother Character™️ who’s allowed to be a lot more, and 10/10 would bang, to boot.
Elise Wassermann
Competent, bad at reading and interacting with most people but good-hearted and in search of justice nonetheless, awkward and endearing without being made overly precious or having her competencies and intelligence downplayed.
Siobhan Sadler
Competent, another Mother Character™️ allowed to be more, scary at times and loving, violent and scheme-y at times, can be amoral, but gorgeously so.
(I...might have an Older Woman Competence Kink, love Italian fuckery/stories about girls fighting for education, and love awkward smart women...)
Anyway, here’s to more excellent women in media in 2017, may I find and love you.
Asset-Based Mindsets for English Language Learners
English Language Learners (ELLs) have often been considered a minority segment of school populations. However, ELLs are growing as a learner population twenty-five times faster than overall student population growth (Mavrogordato & White, 2020). While many schools currently implement specific pedagogical approaches to serve ELLs, these approaches often reinforce a deficit narrative about ELLs that has been written through policy in the United States. To better serve ELLs, educators must understand the formation of current mindsets about ELLs and then combat the status quo through asset-based mindsets that actively advance equity and social justice.
Policy’s Role in the Formation of the Mindsets About ELLs
Deficit mindsets about ELLs, whether explicit or implicit, may be the product of decades of ineffective policy that has left ELLs underserved. Although the 1954 landmark decision of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka ruled that segregation was inherently unequal, many ELLs remained effectively segregated through the means of language (Cruze & López, 2020; Torres-Velasquez, Sleeter, & Romero, 2019). “Prior to the Lau Remedies, resulting from the 1974 Lau v. Nichols Supreme Court decisions, [Dual Language Learners (DLLs)] were denied access to grade-level curriculum due to schools’ use of language grouping that separated DLLs from mainstream classrooms despite the Brown (1954) desegregation orders” (Cruze & López, 2020, p. 82). The Lau Remedies provided guidelines about instruction and resources, but they were nebulous and did little to recognize the assets of non-English-speaking students (Robinson-Cimpian, Thompson, & Umansky, 2016).
It was not until the Castañeda v. Packard ruling in 1981 that policy gained definition in the form of 3 provisions: 1) ELL programs must be research-based, 2) programs must be adequately resourced, and 3) effectiveness of such programs must be evaluated (Cruze & López, 2020). While more explicit than the Lau remedies, the Castañeda provisions did not ensure every non-English-speaking student would receive a quality education equal to that of their English-speaking peers. As with the Lau Remedies, the Castañeda ruling left execution to already inequitable schools and did not define criteria for success. Moreover, Mavrogordato & White (2020) describe how the Castañeda policy is often interpreted rigidly and with perfunctory understanding, without considering the nuance of serving ELLs.
For example, some systems, such as Arizona, allow instruction in English only, even though there is evidence that native languages can be used to make instruction more effective (Cruze & López, 2020). English-only instruction creates two disadvantages for ELLs: the language barrier denies access to grade-level curriculum, and it minimizes the student’s native language (Cruze & López, 2020). In the case of Martinez v. State of New Mexico, plaintiffs alleged that education was insufficient for at-risk populations, including Native and ELL students, on the grounds that their culture was minimized in favor of American English-speaking culture (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019).
Such cultural minimization is pervasive. In 2010, legislators passed a bill barring a Mexican-American studies curriculum in Arizona because it was viewed as an attempt to overthrow the national government (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019). The legislators claimed the curriculum was a threat to national security, even though the program had demonstrated positive academic results for students (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019).  Cultural minimization reaches far beyond the Southwest.
Within the last nine years, 32 states have implemented the Seal of Biliteracy as an award for students who graduate high school with proficiency in two languages; many states have intentionally omitted ELLs from policies framing the Seal, meaning ELLs who become biliterate cannot receive the award because their native language is not recognized within policy (Heineke, Davin, & Bedford, 2018). By and large, such omission is an attempt to avoid political opposition, demonstrating the deficit mindset toward ELLs in the sociopolitical system (Heineke, Davin, & Bedford, 2018). Over the last 66 years, policy has remained vague and minimized heritage cultures.
In the words of Cruze and López (2020), “The U.S. has a long history of tension surrounding equitable access to education for students who speak a language other than English at home” (p. 81). It is important to understand how the history of educating ELLs in America has created a context in which unequal instruction can persist, native languages and cultures are seen as a deficit, and limited understanding of both the law and research can result in poor results for ELLs.
Leadership Postures that Advance Equity and Combat Deficit Orientations
Two leadership postures that promote equity for ELLs are: 1) affirming students’ native culture – including language – as an asset, and  2) insistence on grade-level curriculum for ELLs (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019; Robinson-Cimpian, Thompson, & Umansky, 2016; Mavrogordato & White, 2020) Affirming students’ cultural and linguistic identities might include practices such as culturally-relevant curriculum, cultural pedagogy, multicultural education, bilingual education, and including students’ communities as stakeholders (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019; Heineke et al., 2018).
Torres-Velasquez et al. (2019) define multicultural education as a philosophy that promotes justice, equity, and dignity in such a way that students are ready for the responsibilities of a globalized world because of their pluralism. It is important to note that none of these practices in isolation fully affirm heritage cultures. In the 2014 case of Martinez v. The State of New Mexico, legislators asked whether students should receive a bilingual or multicultural education, but such questions present a false choice (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019).
Rather than seeking a singular system or practice, strategies that affirm students’ heritage should be used in concert. One affirming strategy often overlooked by schools is the explicit engagement of ELLs’ families and communities, which is frequently avoided because school leaders fear the language barrier (Cruze & López, 2020). Additionally, promoting ELLs’ full integration into the school community such that native English speakers build an appreciation for ELLs’ cultures is key to affirmation (Cruze & López, 2020; Mavrogordato & White, 2020; Robinson-Cimpian et al., 2016).
While access to grade-level curriculum is not a singular lever to promote equity, it is central to the learning experience. A common practice is to provide ELL instruction as a pull out from the general education classroom. As a result, ELL students frequently do not participate in grade-level curriculum necessarily for equitable schooling (Torres-Velasquez et al., 2019; Robinson-Cimpian, Thompson, & Umansky, 2016; Mavrogordato & White, 2020).
“Research identifies four main ways in which access to core content is frequently limited for ELs: (a) English-only instruction without appropriate accommodations, (b) weak or slow-paced curriculum in separated classes for ELs, (c) tracking into low-track (low-level) classes, and (d) exclusion from core subject area classes” (Robinson-Cimpian et al, 2016, p. 132). In pull-out classes, teachers may struggle to teach grade-level content to ELLs, and students do not have access to meaningful content discussions with peers (Robinson-Cimpian et al., 2016, p. 132). These low-track courses often teach through rote practices and avoid critical thinking which compounds the problem (Robinson-Cimpian et al., 2016). When students cannot access advanced courses with challenging curriculum, dropout rates increase (Mavrogordato & White, 2020).
Conversely, Cruze & López (2020) indicate that when students have access to grade-level curriculum, a virtuous cycle of achievement is created and students are able to learn increasingly advanced material which has positive impacts on student achievement and graduation rates. Access to rigorous, grade-level curriculum is paramount to move toward equity for ELLs. The impacts of such access goes far beyond academic success and may determine ELL persistence (Mavrogordato & White, 2020). By affirming cultural identity and providing access to grade-level curriculum, educators promote asset-based practices to better serve ELLs.
