Octopath III concept:
Dancer
Male
Fire element (Spell: Torch)
From a polynesian culture, he uses a "hard" dancing style emphasizing power and intensity ala Haka
Following a legend that his people can be liberated by dancing the four corners of the world.
Hunter
Male
Wind element (Spell: Whispering Wind)
Displaced noble ala Robin Hood. He was not born to the forest but it adopted him.
Primary motive isn't revenge, it's wealth redistribution (but revenge is a bonus)
Warrior
Female
No element.
Gladiator with the energy of a pro wrestler
Out to challenge the greatest champions and prove her worth (undertones of institutional sexism
Scholar
Female
Fire/ice/lightning
Unkempt, mousy, nervous. Likes books more than people.
Trying to protect rare books from a purge.
Cleric
Female
Light element
Half-mad heretic who sees visions of doom, imprisoned for her blasphemy
Believes the church is complacent and ignoring the dire portents she sees, so she's out to prove her visions true.
Apothecary
Male-ish (will have travel banter revealing that he only defaults to male but actually has no gender)
Lightning element (spell: Galvanize)
A Frankenstein, whose creator taught him everything he knows.
His creator vanished and he's out to find what happened to them while following in their footsteps
Merchant
Male
Dark element (spell: Blot)
A shady back alley smuggler.
Accidentally comes into possession of some Very Important Contraband and is desperately trying to get it to its destination while figuring out what it is and why everyone wants it.
Thief
Femme (actual gender is unknown)
Ice element (spell: Cold Shoulder)
An elegant and classy phantom thief type
Out for the biggest score, while staying one step ahead of the law
The world is definitely a bit darker, ruled by an oppressive regime and corrupt church.

Their names are Oriana Turgenev and Ayomide Lawal, the Astronomer and the Shepherd.
The first two travelers to be introduced and the first Crossed Paths pair, Oriana and Ayomide are both on journeys of noble lineage, but in different ways. Oriana became an astronomer to free herself of her game-of-thrones style family shenanigans, but they roped her back in with a request to help them pay off their debts. And if she doesn’t do it, the entirety of the Valleylands may go to war. Ayomide doesn’t come from noble blood himself, but his surrogate father was the royal advisor to the former royal family in the Grovelands, at least before they were all killed. But Ayomide finds out that they aren’t all dead, and may be the key to helping free the Grovelands of their empirical colonizers.

Octosona is out!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s with great pleasure that I introduce to you Sly, my octosona 🐍
All you need to know about her is
- she can and will poison you if you aren’t polite enough
- She has a pet snake named Sev (a boaedon fuliginosus)
- She has a passion for reptiles in general
- She lives in the Woodlands (Duskbarrow)
- She keeps her left arm and eye always covered, perhaps to hide something..
- She likes to eat everything, and I mean everything
Some gameplay stuff I made up for fun:
- her wooden staff actually has poison inside, so with every physical attack there’s a small chance she might inflict poison
- She uses wind magic, her ultimate’s an area wind attack that will also inflict poison to the enemies
- Has a debuff that lowers elemental def and wind resistance
- Has a sacrifice ally skill! If an ally dies, she can revive them with full health BUT another ally has to die in their place
- And my favorite passive: if Lars/Wrath is in the party while using the sacrifice ally skill, the “token ally” that dies in their place will automatically be him LMAO

The travelers in Octopath Traveler are fascinating for many reasons. The reason that has me awake well into the night right now is the differences between characters of the same class and how different game mechanics tell you a lot about their respective personalities. Keep in mind while reading that it has been many months since I beat octopath 2 and I’m only halfway through octopath 1.
This is most easy to see with two of the classes that seem to change the least, Hunters and Warriors. Both keep the same magic element, or lack there of in the warrior’s case, both keep most of the same utility moves, both still heavily favor martial abilities. However both use their weapons very differently.
Let’s start with the warriors. Olberic and Hikari both favor their swords in cutscenes, you could say it’s their signature weapon, and use their spears as a backup in combat. It’s interesting to note this is opposite how these were used in history. Where they differ is how they use those weapons. Hikari uses his sword for quick strikes and complex maneuvers while using his spear for powerful thrusts. Olberic uses his sword for strong sweeps and cleaves while keeping his spear for fast and random jabs. Hikari’s main sword skill works mechanically very similarly to Olberic’s main spear skill.
This reflects their relative personalities well. Hikari tackles his problems through quick and clever action while Olberic is more straightforward and blunt in his approach. To borrow some trope terms Olberic is more like the team Big Guy while Hikari feels more like a Lancer. Both of these men would say you can learn much about someone by how they wield a blade, and they’re definitely right.
Then we come to the hunters H’aanit and Ochette. First let’s highlight their similarities: they both use the exact same elemental attack, Thunderbird, and no other magic, both favor their bow over their axe, they have some of the same utility abilities, and both fight side by side with captured monsters. And that’s where the similarities end, but even their similarities already show differences. H’aanit only has skills tied to her bow while Ochette at least has one ability for her axe. And then there’s their capture abilities which change so much between the games it’s honestly hard to think of them as the same thing, They have completely different feels and trying to describe that would take a few paragraphs on its own so I’ll stick with their bow skills for now.
At first glance they seem to have the opposite skills than you’d expect. The impulsive and energetic Ochette carefully picks her targets with Precision Shots, while the Stoic H’aanit makes wild volleys. But dig deeper and this makes perfect sense. First these styles fit the ones who taught them very well, both were taught by a master with the opposite personality as themselves. However there is also the fact that H’aanit’s speed shooting style of archery, one that sacrifices accuracy and damage for stager potential, requires far more experience and skill to effectively pull off. It makes sense then that the barely teenage Ochette wouldn’t go for it.
There’s honestly so much more to unpack with this. Some classes completely change which element they use, some use more magic skills while some use more weapon skills and others still use more utility skills. Some change their unique mechanics at a fundamental level, and have access to different passive abilities. And all this isn’t even touching on how the Octopath 2 cast simply has more mechanics to work with.
In conclusion I am a giant nerd who enjoys coming up with story and character driven reasons for changes likely made to enhance gameplay experience. But more importantly mechanics are an important tool for characterization and we should pay attention to them. In any case I have so much more thoughts about this and hopefully now so do you!

Clyde the Merchant (Octopath OC)
"It ain't about the goods, see. It's about what they mean to people who ain't got nothin' else."
Links to previous: Osanna the Cleric
Name: Clyde Job: Merchant Gender: Male Element: Dark (Spell: Blackout) Latent Power: Blockade Runner (All attacks lower shields) Appearance: 1920s rum runner. Button up shirt with rolled sleeves. flat cap. Not a trenchcoat, more like a long vest. Fingerless gloves. Pinstripe trousers held up with suspenders. He should be short and scrappy-looking. Friendly Action: Purchase Hostile Action: Ply (Trades items, mostly vendor trash, for information) Starting Region: Cloud Islands, a semi-tropical archipelago contested between two empires and the natives. Starting Town: Rogueport, a hidden smuggler's cove. Mix of gangster and pirate aesthetics. Starting Story: Working as a smuggler, he has a list of deliveries to make. Mostly behind military blockades or to people who are otherwise struggling. However, something in his latest cargo draws undue attention and he has to fight off rivals to escape port safely. Goal: Evade the authorities, bring supplies to people in need, check off his delivery list, and figure out why this cargo is causing so much trouble. Battle Motif: "To Restore Hope," an upbeat but maybe a little sleazy jazz number with an emphasis on trumpets.
I've had trouble separating Clyde from Partitio. They're both kind of ahead of the curve when it comes to aesthetics. Their motivations aren't even all that different. The real differences are the environment they're reacting to, and how they go about their Job.
In a way, the world that Clyde lives in is a world where Partitio never happened. Half the world is under an oppressive technocracy. Clyde is still trying to make the world a better place, but while Partitio was more focused on a better tomorrow, Clyde is focused on the here and now. He's a much shadier character (as noted by his element), and is sleazy where Partitio was just charming, but his heart is in the right place. He's not just bringing goods, he's bringing hope to people who are struggling under oppression and deprivation.
The biggest change from my initial concept was de-emphasizing the macguffin package. It's now more about the smuggling, with the package as a complication. It'll come up throughout, but only the first and last chapters will deal with what it actually means.
