I want to try more visual novels since reading soulsov, do you have any recommendations?
you should read my friends' vns:
Tumblr media
coquette dragoon - mecha sci-fi about girls seeking companionship in the miserable shadow of war. the girls are really normal also is the great thing about them
Tumblr media
spare parts - slice-of-life drama about a girl who meets a family of robots and does her best to help them. but watch out! they're all really normal in this one too btw, which is awesome
both of these are masterclasses in emotive storytelling and presentation, and they're most of the reason i decided to pursue soulsov as a vn. if there is truly "an oel vn renaissance" underway, then i think these two are leading the charge.

i do genuinely think when i read it katawa shoujo was probably the best introduction to VNs possible for me
no need to pirate a japanese game and apply a possibly spotty translation over it (sorry all the great VNs that applies to), very distinct easy to explain concept but not gimmicky enough to take "haha the only good VNs have a wacky concept" away from it (sorry hatoful boyfriend specifically), and then when you get in it's just a normal ass romance VN by people who clearly like normal ass romance VNs
and then when you enjoy it it's all over, you can't cringe at romance VNs or ones with H scenes and go "ewww dating sims" because you like one now, and now that you have less dumb ideas about the medium you'll want to read other ones (or at least i did)
now, obviously it has its issues (the writing is... of inconsistent quality, same with the art, the fucking name, all that stuff) and i wouldn't say it's the best introduction to the medium now
(that's just "go find a classic one the person would like with a decent official translation, which is much easier nowadays, or some short OEL one that doesn't hate the medium and/or japanese media in general", although i guess the latter does include KS)
but like, when i read it? yeah.
(also like, i didn't get this when i read it because i was like 12 but. man. "basically the entire main cast is disabled and this is both clearly a major part of their lives and not all they have going on" is like, actually not very common, huh!)

Say Hello to the Lone Wolf of "Kenka Bancho Otome -Girl Beats Boys-"
Kenka Bancho Otome -Girl Beats Boys-, the anime adaptation of the visual novel spinoff of the beat-'em-up series Kenka Bancho, is slowly building up its harem in advance of the anime's premiere. In the latest PV, we meet Rintarou Kira, the "Lone Wolf" Delinquent:
youtube
    From his bio on Otome-Jikan:
It is said that his abilities and strength are number one among the second year delinquents. But this is just noise from the people around him and the person himself is unconcerned about competing for the top. A taciturn boy who dislikes hanging out with people, he's always doing things alone.
As in the original VN, Rintarou is voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya (Orga Itsuka, Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans). He's the latest character to be given his own PV, following Totomaru Minowa (voiced by KENN) and Takayuki Konparu (voiced by Shouta Aoi).

Kenka Bancho Otome -Girl Beats Boys- will consist of ten-minute long episodes.

i started playing an OEL vn/dating-sim for phones called The Arcana and it’s really good and i really love all the characters. The art and the story so far are great. I’m deeply invested. However this makes it kind of rough that the whole story isn’t out yet.... like i’m desperate for more but it’s not all there yet. I really wish I had found the game when it was fully done.... I hope it gets updated fairly often before i forget about it :( for now i’ll follow their page

Hello! The first four chapters of Spare Parts: Episode 3 are available for purchase right now as a demo. It’s about 40k words long (just a bit less than 20% of the full game’s script), so it’s pretty hefty even on its own.
Please give it a look! Thank you!

Hey I’m gonna try to start posting these here too!
I made a new post on my Patreon about how Episode 3′s development is coming. For $3+ you can read me rant about visual novel gamefeel and look at some images I’ve finished recently. There’s also a bunch of older posts about side projects that haven’t come to fruition, WIPs from previous episodes and the demo, and some other stuff.
Thanks for your support!

Doki Doki Literature Club Is Back in Session Soon with New Content
English-language visual novel Doki Doki Literature Club won hearts and bent brains when it appeared as a free Steam download in 2017. More than two years later, its creator says there is more to come this year... plus a new VN in addition.
Dan Salvato's game garnered an immediate cult following thanks to its unexpected twists and subversion of the dating sim genre. While the game itself is free, fans have been able to show support by purchasing the game's fan pack (including a soundtrack and digital booklet), as well as merchandise penned by game artist Satchely and other collaborators. The game has not been expanded upon since its release save for fan-made games and patches.
In a recent tweet, Salvato revealed that there is more DDLC content to come this year, as well as the release of a second, long-delayed VN:
This will be the year I reclaim my happiness so I can deliver it to others! My goal is to fully return to doing things I enjoy, such as making games. First releasing new DDLC content (not a sequel), then blowing the dust off my next original VN which has been on hold for 2 years.
— Dan Salvato (@dansalvato) January 2, 2020
That's all the information we have so far. It's not known yet what form the new content will take, or what the theme of the second VN will be. However, DDLC fans who have made deep dives into the code will be aware of "Project Libitina," traces of a secondary story that seem to tie back to elements of the game. The running theory has been that these story traces will be the subject matter of a future game by Salvato. Whether this year's release is that upcoming game remains to be seen.

Hundreds of Artists Redraw the 2000s' Favorite Gothic Anime Angel
Remember this girl? If you were an anime fan on the internet in the 2000s, there are decent odds you've seen the gothic anime angel—and perhaps even used her as an avatar! Thanks to one Twitter user, she's back in full force, and getting a facelift for the new decade!
The image was originally drawn by Hiro Suzuhira, the artist behind the Shuffle! visual novel series and many other games, VNs, and light novels. Twitter user @pantieschan decided to kick off the new decade by inviting fans to redraw this touchstone of Internet anime fandom:
Everyone redraw Her for 2020 celebration pic.twitter.com/jvpo53rHK6
— waws (@pantieschan) December 30, 2019
Fans were quick to respond with their own renditions, as well as memories of seeing the art online in their early fandom days. The hashtag #gothicanimeangel2020 houses the memories and ever-increasing library of artwork:

Hime even got in on the nostalgic action thanks to art by our own @coughdrops:
  2020 is going to be #gothicanimeangel2020 by @coughdrops!! pic.twitter.com/LcpElwTD0x
— Crunchyroll (@Crunchyroll) January 1, 2020
Best of all, Suzuhira herself caught wind of the hashtag! She was not only happy to know that her work was so well loved by so many people, but also brought with her an updated version of the art:
  そして昨晩から海外の皆さんが素敵な企画を開催してくれていて、以前に鈴平が描いたゴスパン娘さんのファンアートを沢山描いて下さってます!ありがとうございます #gothicanimeangel2020 から沢山の素敵な絵が見れますので、もし良かったら覗いてみてください thank you everyone! pic.twitter.com/hXHgBLBFgJ
— 鈴平ひろ (@suzuhirahiro666) December 31, 2019
We can't think of a better way to kick off an anime-filled new decade than revisiting this fan favorite. Keep your eyes on the hashtag, and let us know if you contribute your own art to it!

Aniplex Launches Visual Novel Branch with Two New Titles
Aniplex is spreading into the world of visual novels!
The newly-launched ANIPLEX.EXE will specialize in all-ages VNs, staring with two releases in 2020. The titles—ATRI -My Dear Moments- and Adabana Odd Tales—will be made as collaborations with Frontwing, The Pillow, and Liar-soft.
ATRI -My Dear Moments- comes to us from Frontwing and The Pillow, written by Asta Konno (If My Heart Had Wings, A Sky Full of Stars). The story takes place on future Earth, whose surface is now largely underwater due to rising sea levels. Natsuki Ikaruga, a boy unable to walk due to a childhood accident, moves to a seaside town. Waiting for him is his inheritance from his late marine geologist grandmother: a submarine and debt. Together with debt collector Katherine, he explores the ship and discovers ATRI, a highly advanced robot girl. She says she must carry out her owner's final order, but in the meantime wants to "be Natsuki's legs."
Hikaru Akao (Ichika Tsumura in the upcoming Smile Down the Runway) will be the voice of ATRI.
Coming from Liar-soft is Adabana Odd Tales, with a scenario by the company's own Nozomu Umihara and character designs by Ryuugo Oishi. Players will meet Kurofude, a boy who wields a brush as though it were a sword, and the amnesiac girl he calls Shirohime. The two journey through a world of fairy tales, looking for distortions in the story as they go.

Come Sail Away: Five Reasons to Watch ISLAND
Frontwing's new series ISLAND is whisking viewers away to a setting far from the Japanese mainland, where romance and time travel and legends are the order of the day. The series is based on a visual novel, but you don't need any previous experience to enjoy the story of Setsuna's mission on Urashima Island.
Still haven't experienced the new series yet? We have a few good reasons why we love it -- and why we think you will, too.
  1. The Pedigree
Even if you haven't heard of ISLAND by name, you'll likely recognize its origins if you're an anime or visual novel fan. The original VN is the product of Frontwing, a computer game company founded in 2000. Frontwing has released multiple games under many different studio names, but there's one series in particular that should ring a bell: Grisaia.
Yep, ISLAND and the Grisaia series share a studio! And while they may not have a lot in common plot-wise, knowing its origins will give you an idea of what you can expect story-wise. Although we're pretty sure things aren't going to get quite as dark as they do in the world of Grisaia...
2. A Time-Traveling Hero... Maybe?
The hero of our story is Setsuna, an amnesiac who washes up on the beaches of Urashima Island. All he knows is his name, and that he has traveled through time to save the world. And... that's about it. He's pretty chill for knowing only one or two things about himself, especially considering one of those things is highly implausible.
But the longer things go on, and the more we learn, the more the whole "time traveler" thing seems like it could be true. From strange glitches in characters' vision to the story of the three families of Urashima Island, things seem to be stacking up to prove that Setsuna really is who he says he is.
Will that be the case? We can't wait to find out!
    3. Three Great Heroines
We could probably finish out the list by listing each of the girls as their own reason to watch, but we won't do that to you. That said, we love them all for their own reasons.
Rinne Ohara (CV: Yukari Tamura) is the de facto lead girl, the resident of a frankly enormous house and a believer in the titular island's legends. (More on that in a bit; that's worth its own section!) She's got no problem believing Setsuna's story, because she has a story and some wild memories of her own. We've still yet to figure out what they mean, but her story definitely has us wondering.
Karen Kurutsu (CV: Kana Asumi) is our resident twin-tailed tsundere who seems to want nothing more than to get off the island. How smitten with Setsuna she is seems to vary, but recent episode developments make it clear that she's at least somewhat interested. We know little of her family life, except that it isn't the best. And she's taken up a part-time job as a maid at the Ohara household.
And then there's Sara Garando (CV: Hibiku Yamamura), who's a real piece of work. She's the island's miko, and highly knowledgable about the area's darker aspects. She's also out to kill Setsuna. Fortunately, her tactics tend to consist mainly of laying ineffectual "honey traps" and failing to stab him with a pocket knife.
The three heroines are the daughters of the island's three great families, all of which play a role in a legend that may or may not have its basis in reality.
  4. Dark Legends and Mysterious Plagues
Why is Urashima Island cut off from mainland Japan? What is the mysterious "soot blight syndrome" that makes sunlight toxic to some of the island's residents? And why do Setsuna and our three heroines just happen to match so perfectly with the main players from the island's ancient legend?
That's what we're here to find out.
Even with its cute and funny moments, ISLAND has an undercurrent of dark mystery. Just how much of the supposed paranormal background of the island is accurate remains to be seen, but there are a few coincidences that seem to be leading us down a very odd path. Time travel? Reincarnation? Something else entirely?
Not to mention that, on Urashima Island, mainland Japan seems distant, almost mythical. Will we find out why before the show ends?
    5. The Music!
youtube
If you enjoy Yukari Tamura's singing, you've come to the right show. Rinne sings to Setsuna throughout the series -- a beautiful song titled "Lasting Memories." You'll also get to hear Tamura performing the show's OP every week, of course!
There's a lot to love about ISLAND, from the mystery to the characters to the beautiful setting. What's your favorite thing about the show so far? Let us know in the comments!
  Watch ISLAND on Crunchyroll!
