Do you have any advice on how to start an rp blog? I feel like there's so much to do and so many specific things, it looks intimidating, but I really want to get into it (and your blog seems like a safe space to ask as a baby in the matter)

Hi! Thanks you for asking and for trusting. I do admit that rping on tumblr can look daunting and there is a series of things that are considered “etiquette” that might not be obvious for newcomers. And the only way to learn is to ask, right? As I’m not sure if you would like something more specific or a step-by-step, I’m going to go through the whole process.

1.       Setting up the blog

You might want to make a new e-mail account for each blog you want. I recommend making a gmail/google account, so you may be able to use other services and associate them with your blog. I’ll go into more details in a minute.

Some people would rather have a personal blog and then making the RP blog as a side-blog. Or a “hub” blog and many side-blogs so they have everything centralized. The downside is that you can’t follow people with side-blogs, only the main – and some rpers are a little suspicious of personal blogs, so if you intend to go this route it might be a good idea to state somewhere in your blog that you have a RP blog.

Tip : It isn’t said too often, but I recommend saving your blog’s e-mail and password somewhere, maybe a flashdrive or even google drive. This way, if something happens you will be able to retrieve your account.

When picking the URL, for a very long time tumblr had problems tagging URLs with a hyphen ( - ). I’m not sure if it has been fixed or if there are still some issues, so I recommend only using letters and maybe numbers. Other than that, pick anything that sounds nice to you!

Themes are nice, but not entirely necessary. Not everybody has photoshop skills and all that. Some people do have commissioned themes, but if you want to try your hand at it my first stop is usually @theme-hunter  or @sheathemes . They reblog many themes from many creators, so there are always many options that might suit your needs.  Some creators offer very newcomer-friendly themes that you can configure a lot of things without much hassle but some might require basic HTML knowledge – a few creators have guides on how to properly set up their themes and are willing to and answer questions, so don’t be afraid to contact them! You can also send me an ask, I’m not a specialist but I can certainly help walk you through the basics.

Tip: @glenthemes have very good themes and a basic installation guide here.

When fiddling with the options, try to pick colors that have nice contrast and are easy to read. If you are bad at picking colors or have problems in finding the code for them, I recommend trying this link. There is also this one that auto-generate palettes.

Tip : If you mess with your theme, remember there is the Theme Recovery.

Tip: If you use Chrome or Firefox you can set up different profiles and associate each with a different blog, so you don’t need to log out from any of your accounts.

There are two pages that I recommend having: one is an about your muse. If they are an OC, it is always a good idea to have at least some information out there to make things easier. If they are from a canon source, not everybody is familiar with the material so it might be a good idea to state. For example, if you are going to roleplay as Altria/Arturia, it is a good idea to have a “RP blog for Saber (Altria Pendragon) from FGO/FSN “ somewhere visible. The other page that is a good idea having is a rules/guidelines page. This one can be a little intimidating, but it is usually a way to communicate important things. For example: are you comfortable writing violence? Do you have any personal triggers? There is something you absolutely won’t write? There are things you may figure out along the way and it is absolutely ok to fine-tune this session every now and then. Some people also credit source for their icons and graphics in general in their rule/guideline page.

If you are using the tumblr default themes, when you create a new page you can turn on the option to show a link to the page. If you are using a custom theme, most of the time you will have to link it manually.

Oh, and if you are planning to do a multimuse, it might be a good idea to list which muses you have. The same goes for a hub blog; list the muses and link to the pages.

Icons aren’t necessary but are considered commonplace. You can find some icons I’ve done here but there are plenty of other sources. If you want to do your own icons, keep in mind to don’t make them too big, as a courtesy to your mutuals.

Tip: Anything larger than 300 pixels will be stretched to fit the post. As of today ( 4/29/2021 ) the posts are currently 540 pixels wide. This can be useful as making banners for your blog.

Tumblr allow users to “pin” posts. This mean that they will always visible if you access your blog, even on dash/mobile. You can use this to set up a post with basic links for mobile users or something else. For example, if you are out on vacations and won’t be able to do replies, you can pin a hiatus notice and then remove the pin once you are back.

2.       Introducing yourself

Time to officially join the fun! (insert a “Hi, Zuko here” joke) Don’t worry if you don’t have a fancy promo graphic or anything, most people make their initial introduction with a simple post.

Try to introduce yourself in a few lines, but make sure to state which muse you RP as. Some people also like adding their pen name/alias and establishing a brand. Follow as many people as you want that reblogged or liked your post, and tumblr is going to start recommending other blogs that are related to the tags you use normally or have any relation to the people you follow. You can put as many tags as you want, but tumblr will disregard more than 6 tags in their system. Try tags like “<fandom> rp” and “<fandom> roleplay” along with the media, such as “movie” “video game”, “anime” and so on.

It might also be a good idea to follow a few RP memes blogs. They often have options to break the ice, like one-liners that your mutual can send you.

Tip: Don’t forget to turn on the asks and the anon

3.       Practical advice

Alright, now that you have a few mutuals, it is time to get to some general tips:

Tumblr can be a little “iffy”, and a great quality of life extension for RPers and navigation in general is installing the New Xkit extension. They offer a number of options to enhance your tumblr experience, but the ones I consider essential are the “editable reblogs”, “quick tags” and “blacklist”. Get it for Chrome or Firefox.

As a rule of thumb I recommend writing your RPs using Google Docs before posting or replying. By doing this you can do some spell check and if your browser crashes for any reason you can easily recover your work. You can also use Word, Open Office, or any text editor you feel like.

Because I’m a bit of a perfectionist, I also have Grammarly ( Chrome / Firefox ) installed for an extra layer of spell/grammar check. There is a subscription option, but the free one works perfectly fine.

To make things easier to locate, always tag the URL of your RP partner when doing a reply. There are other useful things you can tag, such as open starters, memes, and such.

Risking being obvious here, but when you are not interacting as your character it might be a good idea to tag as “ooc” or “out of character”.

Some people like making google docs with basic info and other useful stuff for easier access on mobile. It is a recent trend, it might be easier to edit as opposed to going through tumblr page editor and dealing with the HTML.  You can find some templates here and here.

Tumblr’s activity can be unreliable, so don’t be afraid of contacting your partner to see if they have gotten your reply after a few weeks. However, some people also enjoy using the RP Thread Tracker in order to be on top of things. It might be a good idea to check it out.

Because of Tumblr shadowbanning and shenanigans, it isn’t unusual for people to have NSFW sideblogs (sometimes referred as ‘sin blogs’). If you want to write smut, it might be a good idea to consider making one.

Some people don’t like replying to asks, as Tumblr won’t let you remove the initial ask. It has become common to see people making new posts to reply to asks.  This is a simple example:

As you can see, I used the mention to have the RP partner notified then I copied and pasted their question on my post and used the quote to indicate it. You can also have fancy graphics, like a line to separate the contents, just do whatever you feel like with the formatting or keep it simple.

To make sure your partner got the answer, I recommend copying the link to the post and pasting on the ask and then replying it privately.  An example sent to my rp blog:

4.       Basic Etiquette

Ok, this is a little subjective most of the time but here are a few things that are considered universal courtesy.

Never reblog someone else’s headcanons. If you enjoy it, maybe it should politely contact the author and ask if it is ok to write something based on their original idea but you should never downright copy or lift something from another creator. It is considered rude, or even theft in some cases.

Don’t reblog threads you are not involved with. It is ok to leave a like, but never reblog. This is because Tumblr can mess up the notifications and disrupt the flow of the RP.

Don’t copy other people’s graphics. It is very rude and sometimes they commission (aka: paid) for it.

Trim your posts. What does that mean? Every time you reblog with a reply, the post tends to get longer and longer, and it can cluster your and your mutuals’ dashes. This is why the New X-Kit’s “editable reblogs” is an almost must-have tool. If for some reason you can’t install X-Kit (if you are on mobile for example), then remove the previous post or ask your partner to trim for you.

Never take control of your RP partner’s muse. This is called “godmodding” and it is heavily frowned upon. It is ok to control your muse and the possible NPCs that you inserted, but never seize someone else’s character. Likewise, it can also be very upsetting if you use what people call “meta-gaming”, applying knowledge that your muse shouldn’t know about the other. For example, let’s say your RP partner’s muse is a vampire, but they have never disclosed that information to your muse, who also doesn’t have an excuse to know that (for example, being a vampire hunter) so it can be quite jarring sometimes. When in doubt, contact your partner.

This should go without saying, but RPing sexual themes with users under the age of 18 are illegal. It doesn’t matter if the age of consent in your location is lower, once you join Tumblr you are abiding by their user guidelines and the law of the state they are located in. If you are an adult, don’t engage minors with these topics, maybe a fade to black would be a better option. If you are a minor, don’t insist or you might cause a lot of legal problems for others.

Try to tag anything triggering. Violence, gore, NSFW. Both Tumblr and the New Xkit have options to block keywords.

When picking PSDs or graphics for your blog, you should avoid templates that change the color of the skin of POCs muses and try to pick the right race/ethnicity of the muse you are going to RP as. I won’t go through a lot of details, as it is a rather lengthy subject in an already lengthy conversation but keep this in the back of your mind.

Some RPers don’t like when you reblog memes from them without sending anything. Try to always reblog from a source or to interact with the person you are reblogging from, it can be rather disheartening to be seen as a meme source rather than a RP blog. This isn’t a rule and some people don’t mind, but it is always a good idea to try to do this.

This might be more of a pet peeve of mine than proper etiquette, but it is ok to use small font. What is not ok is use small font + underscript. Some people have disabilities that might make it harder for them to read it, so it might be a good idea to refrain from using it. Maybe if you feel like doing something fancier every now and then, but I wouldn’t recommend making this a habit.

Mun and Muse are different entities. Remember that it isn’t because a muse does something (especially a villain one) that the mun condones something. Never assume anything about the mun, when in doubt talk to them.

Be mindful of your partners and treat them the way you would like to be treated.

As a rule of thumb, always talk to your RP partner. It is only fun as long both of you are enjoying it.

5.       Closing Words

This got longer than I expected.

Despite all of that, don’t be too worried about not being very good at first. I assure you that you will get better with time, so don’t be afraid of experimenting as long you feel comfortable. And don’t be afraid of saying “no” if something bothers you.

aka my brain has cringe spots on it and needs to be inspected by the FDA

hi my names randi/uni and i created a total drama island themed ARG two months ago on a whim that almost no one interacted with bc i started off way too niche and difficult, so i kinda just went increasingly off the rails because i knew most likely no one was monitoring my posts and i could just make a real cursed hidden tomb that could one day be discovered by someone in a goonies esque unveiling. but then i got lice and now im sad and uncomfortable so i’m just gonna explain the entire damn thing in one shot. its absolutely batshit and theres a reason no one uncovered it ok here we go;;;

first of all the name. its so stupid but. ‘tango delta india’ = ‘tdi’ in the NATO phonetic alphabet. it just felt like a funny place to start that implies its gonna be a puzzle blog idk,

moving on to the actual content tho; some of the earlier posts mean p much nothing and were just an attempt to draw people in, such as the mr coconut ‘like if you agree’ or the ‘let him inside hes cold’ posts. 

then theres the cipher (x). it was posted shortly after the height of the ‘using total drama reference pictures to make an alphabet’ meme. in case anybody didnt see that; for a while it was a joke in the fandom to take the transparent references of total drama characters, and line them up, using them like hieroglyphics to make translatable pictures. its supposed to correspond to the alphabet, based on the first letter of their first name. an example could be, alejandro = a, bridgette = b, and so on. there was no solidly set alphabet amongst the fandom though, it was self explanatory most of the time so i made my own solid personal cipher key for that blog to make the whole thing easier.

NOW ONTO THE FIRST PUZZLE POST,,,, (x). theres a scene, a string of text, the cipher key, and a link to a decoder. the way to decode it all is to plug the characters on screen into the tangodeltaindia cipher key, and then plug That translation into the decoder website, and then finally paste in the text under the photo. 

the website linked is to a Caesar cipher decoder. the Caesar cipher is just a code where the alphabet is assigned to numbers (a=1, z=26), and to encode something with it you can move this pattern however you want as long as you keep the regular sequence of alphabet and numbers. so you could scootch over One letter, and “abc” would now say “bcd”. so on and so forth.

looking at the scene + my own total drama reference cipher, alejandro = A, and the beaver = 1, which gives A1. so you could now follow the link to the website, press ‘decode’, and paste in the text under the picture. the ‘shift’ in the middle is automatically set to ‘7′, or as it shows, a -> h, meaning ‘a’ has been moved over by 7 letters. so if you set the shift to just 1 over, or A1, now you can translate the text. it reads;

“lets start simple. after all, a trail of breadcrumbs begins with a loaf. whats the harm in another long winded fandom meme. another inside joke. and arent you curious whats truly lurking inside?”

edgy! simple! kinda just a test to see if people would do it or not. which they didnt so of course i tried to make it weirder-

puzzle 2; (x) using the exact same translation rules as above. we have alejandro and the snake, which with the tangodeltaindia cipher key means A6. going to the website, putting it in ‘decode’ mode, pasting in your text, and setting the shift to ‘6′ gives you this translation.

“in his eyes are an island. nothing but a dream, born out of going to bed angry. sink or swim.”

this was just hinting around at where the story was gonna go so it’ll make more sense later. something else to note; if you zoom all the way in and look into alejandros eye (’in his eyes’), you’ll see the word ‘Thera’. ~thats a surprise tool that will help us later~

so after this one, there are two non-puzzle posts that are also just hints (i was just tryna see if i could get people hyped), the first is a close up picture of chris with red eyes that simply says “those arent his eyes”, and then a post that says “his real names not chris :)”, they’re again referencing his eyes, and this time further implying theres something fake or wrong about them, or with chris as a person. again, it’ll be explained better later on.

moving on to puzzle 3 (x), another test to see if anyones keeping up (which also failed josdfjsdfkjs), using the same translation rules, dj = a dash or minus, and the snail = 5, “-5″, shift the letter ‘A’ BACK five instead of forward, and you get the simple translation of; “getting harder now.”

puzzle 4 and 5; at this point, there are two images posted within hours of each other that i’ll explain together as they line up. (x) (x)

These are some of the only ones that can be translated from just the tangodeltaindia key directly. They end up a string of numbers, which are latitude and longitude coordinates. The first post, labelled “the lie”, translates into “45.57394802102744, -81.46817207492494″. googling that will take you to maps and show you to a place called Lonely Island in Canada.

The second one, “the truth”, translates into “36.404663113177534, 25.39605673375295″, taking you to Santorini, Greece.

This is where the hints got really out there bc i realized nobody was following along but i still wanted to paint a picture. so this is the set up;;; the idea that the ‘island’ (camp wawanakwa) existing somewhere in canada, is a lie. the ‘true’ location being santorini isnt meant to be taken at face value though. the mythology behind santorini is that a man impregnated a goddess and to escape the wrath of her father (triton), she formed the island (santorini) by having her lover throw clay into the sea, and then she gave birth to her son, Theras, on this island, giving the island it’s Other nickname, Thera.

this is again just a vague implication that the island might not be real at all, or that it was formed through cosmic means.

the next two posts are more non-puzzle hints, the first showing the definition of the word ‘fresh’ (new), and the second being images of total drama backgrounds with no characters and the text reading “they were always empty.” more, admittedly very outlandish implications that the island is some kind of illusion, but again mostly just another try to drag people into the blog.

puzzle 6. (x) this one introduces a new concept to the regular translation rules, some of the characters are laying down. its kinda supposed to imply they’re “dead” and that you need to take their corresponding letters out of the alphabet given on the Caesar cipher page, below the shift. The upright characters translate to “-9″, so you shift ‘A’ back 9 letters. Then remove the letters; “TH-E-R-A-S”, and with those letters taken out, you can finally translate the text.

“he creates life solely to destroy it. to crush it in his hands. he births chaos so that he may have something to control. the power has given him madness. the isolation, arrogance. don't try to stop him, he's already chosen to be unstoppable. his mind is a perfectly crafted prison, one we will all soon be living in.”

this is where the story gets more on the nose. it’s talking about chris, and about him being an unstoppable cosmic force, a diety who can create worlds within his own mind, and he does so maliciously just for power. hes created the campers through mental energy just to torment them. it also hints that his plan is to expand the world of total drama island and engulf the whole universe.

puzzle 7. (x) same as the last puzzle. beaver and moose translate to ‘1-0′ or ten. the characters lying down to remove from the caesar cipher alphabet are “T-U-L-P-A”. this doesnt have anything to do with the modern way some ppl interact with tulpas but just the actual idea of creating thoughtforms, or willing your thoughts into real life creations, referencing how chris has created the entire island and everyone on it solely through his mind. with those letters removed and the shift set forward 10, you get this:

“his psychic power is unfathomable. the reality he bore was just a passing thought. an idea that became so dangerous. he predates the idea of a mind, the minds own ability to recognize itself, his synapses are paradoxically ancient. the island exists only within himself, to torment the souls hes created, and damned from the start. will they ever be free?”

it states that chris is more than a man or even just a diety, hes an all powerful god already, yet he craves more power. the final line, “will they ever be free” is in reference to the campers, which segways into the next arc;;; freeing the campers from chris’ psychic island imprisonment.

puzzle 8. (x) to solve this one you have to translate the top image with the tangodeltaindia cipher key, and add it to the text given, which creates a link. this leads to a PDF, a page from a book written by terence mckenna. he’s a famous ethnobotanist known best for his studies on DMT, the strongest hallucinogenic drug in the world, its also known as the spirit molecule. many people on this drug (without any prior knowledge of this phenomenon) will recount meeting strange fractal beings that can create things in the universe just by speaking them into existence, theyve come to be known as ‘machine elves’, a term coined by mckenna. ill show the most important excerpt from the page;

this is less about the psychedelic drug part and more about the words and ideas, like “punching a hole through a dimension so it pours through” and “if god didnt exist man would invent him”. its more worldbuilding towards chris’ power and cosmic abilities

then come 2 more clues. a picture of chris holding his own body captioned ‘ego death’, and the meaning behind the name ‘chris mcclean’. the latter is another “please look over here” post, but the first is another minor reference to the previous puzzles answer involving DMT and terence mckenna. ‘ego death’ is a term again used with strong psychedelic drugs, its the sensation that your spirit as you know it is literally Dying, and you are instead connected to and a part of everything around you. another reference to chris’ power and how he may look like a man but his body and spirit are connected to the world hes built in unfathomable ways. at this point im cementing the idea that chris mclean is not a mortal man and cannot be fought with mortal weapons

puzzle 9. (x) this one was an attempt to make easier to solve puzzles, and comes with a visual of chris looming over the island. the text is in wingdings, which can be translated through multiple websites found through google. it says;

this is essentially saying that the island, the campers, werent all just created from his mind, but from his dreams. this confirms that he Sleeps, and claims hes going to sleep again soon, and during that time period theres a chance to kill him before he can dream up another world (or season) to control and torment. its also saying that theres a chance killing him will destroy the island and campers, but that its the only choice we would have to end the cycle. hey guys i am so bored and over the years i have been on every stimulant and anti depressant doctors are legally allowed to prescribe and its still just not quite there yet huh

puzzle 10. (x) the video, the title translates to “the island of his eye”. its just meant to encapsulate everything ive already been hinting around at but with real footage and some audios taken from the show, and again, it was me tryna make some lore that was easy to digest and also terrifying to an audience with no other context. the final images are the only new clues, if you pause fast enough you can barely make out the characters that (paired with the tangodeltaindia cipher key) would say “set them free”, and you can also see an aerial view of what is actually called “the eye of argentina”. it is a real island that rotates atop a swamp, it is geometrically perfect and no one really knows for sure why it rotates the way it does or how it was formed. this clue is simply related back to the idea that the island of wawanakwa’s location is not in canada, and that it does not function like a normal island.

puzzle 11. (x) what td blog is complete without a uquiz? anyways, it doesnt matter how you answer the quiz, theres only one possible result. the title is a link to a mega file, which is protected with a decryption key. the image attached to the result, when deciphered, is the randomly generated key to the unlock the file. the image you see from the file is this; (TW for mentions of self harm and eye trauma)

this is, believe it or not, an idea that comes from my very own sleep paralysis experiences. ive dealt with it a lot, so why not make a weird ritual thing for an arg based off it ig. so whenever i’d fall asleep on my back, i’d eventually hear this ringing in my ears (or it’d happen upon waking up), and then the sleep paralysis would begin. i only ‘saw’ stuff a couple times but the fear for me was really more about the overwhelming sensation of pure dread that always came along with it even when i was aware what was happening, and i Always got this feeling too that if i opened my eyes in that moment, something was gonna stab them.

so moving on to how that applies to the arg, the first few lines are about how, obviously, the island is not real, even in the lore being given its a figment of chris’ imagination, but you have to enter it anyways, and the only way to do that is to believe its real. then it tells you how to ‘enter’ that world, (btw i didn’t expect anyone to actually follow these instructions if found, but even if they did, the whole ‘sleep paralysis being caused by sleeping on your back’ thing usually only happens if you’re predisposed to having it and only happens to Some people who have it, so the intent was like. never to bring that upon anybody. but if you are prone to sleep paralysis plz do not attempt even as a joke or anything thx)

the parts about hallucinating chris then are as follows, “ask about the camp / he wont respond verbally” , meaning he will show you through a dream instead, one that might look a lot like the video from before. “on the third night you will see his eyes”, meaning you will see the island but not be able to interact with it, or basically, how we see total drama on tv right now. “on the fourth night you’ll enter (his eyes)” references the island existing ‘within his eyes’, meaning you will enter the actual island. the next night chris will sleep and you will be able to enter the island again and find him. the idea with the nail is that, if you destroy his eyes you destroy the ‘island’ within them. wrapping back around to sleep paralysis, the idea of stabbing yourself with the nail afterwards is because sometimes, the only thing you can move during sleep paralysis is your fingertips and toes, and wiggling those can help bring you out of the paralysis. so at first how i used to wake myself up, but it didnt usually work fast enough so oftentimes id just pinch the shit out of my fingers and use pain to make my muscles start up faster.

the next post is a link to a countdown. again, i knew nobody was rly following at this point, but i wanted a little more build up before just dropping the ending. it was set up to end 5 days after the last post, aka the one that mentioned a 5 night dream ritual.

puzzle 12. (x) going all the way back to the normal multi step translation puzzles. the coloring of the cipher is a bit different, and its missing chris, but its meant to be used the same as it was before, these changes are only for dramatic effect. and chris is gone because well. we mentally offed him in the inception dream land last time. so anyways the snake = 6, shift A to 6, take out the letters “R-I-C-K” of the characters laying in their graves, and you get this translation;

“its almost time. we must now crack open our minds like a crowbar to a sealed chest. like an egg to a pan. to find our way into camp wawanakwa our ego cannot remain intact, and to traverse it we must stay strong. to escape it, we must glue the pieces back together. now we sleep. dream. end the nightmare.”

this is a final message before ‘entering the island’ to kill chris and free the campers from the island. it acts like a pep talk.

how do i tell someone

that i will never talk on the phone with them, ever, in the course of our entire relationship, unless there is a legitimate crisis of their mental and physical safety?

now is probably the main time of my life when i need this skill. i should have saved all of my notepads, from the era where i was talking on the phone more, to demonstrate to people that even when i’m going to have a conversation with someone i feel very close to, i need to write down talking points ahead of time, for everything i might say to this person, in case i just spaz out and become totally paralyzed due to the pressures of performing on the telephone. today, i still have to get kind of drunk to handle the pressures of the phone, almost no matter what time of day the call is, or who it’s with, which is not good. maybe i could just send pictures of the bottles/cans/glasses that were required for the call, to get the point across. but, all that said: in reality, my aversion to the phone is just a symptom of my greater social aversion, which is a much harder thing to communicate to people who you want in your life. this morning i am thinking of a friend i love and don’t want to lose, but whose every text or email racks me with nervous electrical shocks, because i know that it is going to involve SO MUCH MORE than just saying hi, even if there is no central topic like a major life change or a request for advice or some similar guideline that helps me along. i can’t ever just send this friend a note or a picture they would like, just to say “thinking of you, hope you’re good!”, because it instantly provokes like 50 questions plus some kind of homework assignment (e.g. explaining that i don’t make everything on my blog, or finding out a bunch of background trivia about a meme i sent and where it came from originally because they “need” to know about it now), in addition to an attempt to schedule a call or a hangout. they are genuinely a pretty intense person, so it takes extra effort on my part to remind myself that at least half the problem is with me--that it’s not abnormal for people to want to spontaneously check in with their friends, especially now, and moreover it IS somewhat abnormal to want to control the exact amount and type of attention that you receive from others and be the sole arbiter of when they get to talk to or look at you based on the rare conditions under which you can stand it. it kind of sucks that i can’t get this person, and persons like them, to just NOTICE after all these years that for the most part i only socialize in short and/or discreet spurts, and sometimes they need to let me send them a little token of my esteem, just for fun, without it exploding into a whole interrogation of our entire lives including scheduled calls and meetings. i do tell people explicitly that i’m an introvert, that even pleasant social contact exhausts me quickly, that i don’t like to be touched, etc, but the truth is that this rarely lands with anyone besides other introverts who already know exactly how i feel without an explanation or instructions. no matter what i say or do, i still have to put up with a whole lot of “awww, i know you said you don’t like to be touched but i’m just gonna hug you ok LOL that’s just me that’s just how i am oh well c’mere AAAAAAWWWWWW! (makes full-body contact with me including the face)”, because people who aren’t like me can’t imagine what it’s like to be like me, to the point that actually they don’t even believe me, they won’t even take me at my word about how i prefer to be treated, they think that SECRETLY all human beings like to be touched so when i say “don’t touch me” i really mean that i’m just too shy to ask to be bathed in the showers of hugs and kisses that my heart truly desires. people just trying to talk to me is a little harder to define as a problem, though, because who is supposed to automatically know when i’m ready to have a conversation and when i’m not? it’s too tiring and too complicated for me to just reassert my boundaries over and over again, so i usually just let people manipulate me into whatever amusement they think i owe them, if i can’t avoid them entirely for whatever reason. so in the spirit of all this, i’ve been sitting here giving my phone the hairy side-eye for as long as it took to type out this entire blog post about the text message i just received asking me to either call or have a socially-distanced hangout, because it’s much easier for me to spend 40 minutes producing pages of brooding self-analysis while my coffee gets cold (and i haven’t even gotten to the exciting topic of how my mother was so rejecting and withholding that it socialized me to make everybody prove that they’re worth my time!) than it is for me to either JUST CALL THE PERSON; say “sure i’ll call you next week” and then ghost the person; or find that mythological perfect way to say, “look, i love you, but i can’t call you. it’s too confusing and it makes me too nervous. i know it’s hard, but you can’t take this personally; it’s entirely about me. why don’t you email me when you get a chance and tell me what you’ve been up to, or else i’ll let you know when i feel comfortable traveling to your neighborhood or vice versa. hope you’re good!” another solution, as my worst shrink once suggested, is to somehow transform myself into a person who LOVES crowds and phone calls and parties and attention and constant platonic touching and rubbing. but like i’m 39 now and i don’t think 40 is going to be the year that i discover that evil alchemy. UGH.

How To Choose the Best Images for Your Brand

Thanks to the ubiquity of social media these days, we are more exposed to photos, images, memes and illustrations than ever before. It’s not just social media, there are a multitude of websites, games, billboards, adverts, not to mention the apps we now rely on, all fighting for space in front of our eyeballs.

It’s one thing to be showing off your new puppy or latest culinary masterpiece to family and friends, but when so much of what you put on online is there to represent your business and your brand, the choice of imagery becomes very important indeed. With that in mind, we thought we’d share our experience about what you look for when it comes to brand imagery, how it separates itself, how to choose images and more importantly, how they reflect on your business in this rapidly moving electronic age. Let’s start with the most basic question.

What Is Brand Imagery?

Brand imagery can incorporate almost anything, e.g. the images, colours, fonts, photos and general aesthetic that illustrates your brand’s core message.

Brand imagery isn’t necessarily limited to things you can see, it can also incorporate what you can smell, touch, taste or hear. For example, the taste of McDonald’s Big Mac, the smell of your favourite Chanel perfume or sound of an Apple computer turning on. All of these examples, and more, will illicit an emotional response in you, hopefully good, but not always!

The purpose of brand imagery is to connect the message you’re projecting with your target audience / customers. When they see (or hear, taste, etc), something you’ve produced they need to associated that ‘thing’ with your brand. Of course, it’s not alway possible to smell, hear or taste these things all the time (not least when we’re in the middle of a global pandemic), so the one thing we’re often left with, is the visuals. When it comes to brand imagery, sight is the most valuable of the senses. That’s why imagery is so crucial!

Your brand ‘image’ (as opposed to imagery) on the other hand is, at least in marketing and advertising terms, is the most important aspect. This is less about the nuts and bolts of your brand, and more about communicating your brand values and allowing it to grow organically over time and not wholly within your control. Your brand image also includes how you are perceived by the outside world and your reputation within it.

Whilst the branding imagery that any company exudes, like the logo, the tagline or their website are vital, and these do need to be consistent to promote feelings in the brand, it’s only when that happens and you really resonate with customers, that the buying decisions are made in their minds.

HOW DO YOU CREATE THE BEST BRAND IMAGERY?

OK, here we go! The big question. The first thing we do with new clients is ask them about their ‘perfect customer’, so let’s do the same exercise with you.

Who is YOUR perfect customer? We’re looking here for thinking in the abstract rather than specific details; ask yourself how old are they (as a range)? what’s important to them? what’s their gender? how much do they earn? what does their day look like? what do they do on weekends? You can ask all sorts of questions, but the answers will hopefully help you understand WHO this person is.

By being able to visualise them, you will be in a better position to understand the kind of imagery they’ll respond to. Think about the brands YOU connect too? What is it about them that you like and what gave you that connection?

Chances are you aren’t the only company doing what you do, so it’s also a good idea to look at the kind of imagery your competitors are putting out there. Not least so you can set about making yourself stand out from them or the marketplace as a whole. It’s this divergence of thought that will help you here. Let’s look at a real world example.

If you think about any of the larger corporations out there, if you can break down what they sell, it might sound like they sell the same thing, but it will be the imagery that differentiates them from each other. Let’s think about electronics, as an example. Apple and Acer both sell computers, so they’re the same right? They’re going for the same market? Is the perfect Apple customer the same as the perfect Acer customer? Spoiler Alert - They’re not.

Remember, this isn’t a critique on the customer, but we’re focussed on the brand imagery. Apple’s imagery is designed to be sophisticated, technologically cutting edge and stylish. They want to appeal to a customer who is fashion-conscious, tech-savvy, ‘hip’ and financially comfortable, or at least, that should be how their customer seems themselves. Their products are at the higher end of what’s available, because they want customers who fit their mould. Could they make a £200 laptop if they wanted? I’m sure they could, but they don’t; they’re a premium brand and the imagery they use always projects that. Their products stand out from the crowd and customers who buy them want to be seen with them, they want the glowing Apple logo on their laptop lid, the white stem coming out of their ears and the mountain of apps for their iPhone. Apple give their customers an identity and many of them have grown very passionate about the brand. They cultivate the emotions that using an Apple product makes you feel, it’s about a lifestyle, innovation, passion, dreams and aspirations. For all of those things it achieves, their imagery is clean, simple and effective.

Acer, on the other hand, looks to another market. They might both make laptops, but they aren’t looking to attract the same consumer, and that’s ok. Acer products tend to be much cheaper PCs, the specifications won’t be pushing any technological barriers, but that’s not to say they’re not good ones. Are they as innovative? No. Exciting? No. Could you pop along to an Acer store and speak to an advisor? No. Would you queue overnight for the latest Acer product? No. Will it cost you an arm and a leg to buy one? No! Which is good!

Acer do have a global audience, but you could argue those that buy an Acer laptop did so based on a different criteria. They’re not looking to spend a fortune for the latest and greatest, they just want a basic machine to get their job done. It probably doesn’t matter to those customers that it’s an Acer brand, it could be Asus, Dell or any number of other manufacturers. They do tend to target younger consumers and younger professionals, so their brand imagery tends to connect to things that young pros like. For example, they’ve recently partnered with Alfa Romeo F1 team to further push their brand forward.

Whether it’s Apple or Acer, BMW or Hyundai, Chanel or Tweed, companies appeal to their target market through one simple facet; design.

When you’re thinking about your imagery, play very close attention to things like colour, content, style, typography (i.e. the fonts you use) and composition because they should all be working together in harmony to project the right message to your target customer. Simple concepts like dark colours and heavy, thick fonts tend project an air of seriousness, whereas paler, more neutral palates feel more contemporary. It’s whatever suits your brand and what you are trying to portray.

Now you know who your audience is, you can begin to craft design elements that will appeal to them, but remember these are still people with their own personality. Not everyone in your target demographic is going to agree on the same thing, so come up with a few different designs and test them out with employees, friends and existing customers. The more people who see it, the more information you can glean from them. Test them out on social media and see which creates the most engagement, then you’ll have a barometer to work from.

When you find the design that works and you’re happy with, stick with it. Whilst they don’t all have to look exactly the same (which will soon get stale), there should be some synergy between them; either through the typography, colour palette or the style you use.

Remember also that we’re living in a scrolling world. On social media especially, people increasingly scroll through their timelines on mobile devices, so you want your imagery to be one that makes them stop and look, so it has to stand out to make an impact.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST IMAGERY

Wow, that’s a lot of words to get to the question you probably want answering the most, but we hope they put it all In context for you. Whilst we obviously can’t give you a clear cut answer for your business, not least because we have no idea what it is, there are three basic elements you should consider when choosing the best imagery for your own brand. It doesn’t have to based on photography either; many successful brands use illustrations, just text or a combination.

Before you embark on your journey towards brand imagery domination, it’s vitally important you take stock of what it is you’re trying to achieve by the images you use. Once you find an image you like, but before you use it, ask yourself (and your marketing team if you have one) what objectives are you outlining with your choice? What messages does it express or what values does it send out? Are they the same ones that you’re hoping for? Will it connect with your target market? What is the purpose behind the visual? Answer these kind of questions FIRST, before moving on to…..

COLOUR

When it comes to brand imagery, colour is the top of the food chain. Colour is probably the most memorable aspect when it comes to the visual components. People may forget your words or website address, but they will remember the colours you used. Colours will help to evoke those emotional feelings in consumers, this is known as colour theory. In fact, some studies have shown that colour increases brand recognition by up to 80%, so picking the right colour is key.

When it comes to design and colour theory (which is a whole other topic we’ll cover in another post), it basically boils down to the emotional nuances you get from 12 different colours; including those classed as primary or basic colours (red, blue & yellow), secondary (mix two primary colours equally), tertiary (mixing one primary and one secondary colour together equally) and, whilst not generally included on any colour wheel; the neutral colours like black, white and grey. It’s not just a random assortment. Notice that the secondary colours sit exactly centred between the primary colours, and the tertiary colours each sit between a primary and secondary colour.

There’s also colour psychology, which studies how colours impact on our mood and behaviours. It works like this; Eye sees colour - brain signals endocrine system - endocrine system releases hormones - hormones impacts mood - mood affects behaviour. Again, in simple terms, colours are signified like this:

Red gives off confidence, youth, and power.

Orange evokes friendly, warm, and energetic.

Yellow projects happiness, optimism, and warmth.

Green instills peace, growth, and health.

Blue shows trust, security, and stability.

Purple equates to luxury, creativity and wisdom.

Black is the epitome of reliability, sophistication, and experience.

White symbolises simple, calm, and clean.

It also has an impact on the vibrancy, or how light or dark that colour is. Whilst each of the main colours has its own properties, so does the shade / vibrancy of that colour. In other words, whilst red and blue will obviously illicit different emotional responses, so too will light blue and dark blue (and everything in-between). Simply put, brighter shades tend to project more energy, whilst darker shades are more relaxing. So, of you have a spa or beauticians then you’re unlikely to project the right image with bright red imagery. The possibilities when it comes to colour are almost endless!

SHAPE

Shapes are often underestimated when it comes to imagery. Geometric shapes have the luxury of not being constrained by language, culture or race, so they are universally recognisable. This means they are very popular with businesses that work internationally. By combining shapes with the right colour and / or typography you can easily increase how your brand is perceived and capture that all-important emotional response.

SIMPLICITY

Logo’s, and branding in general, works best when it’s simple. If you think about the logos for the world’s biggest brands, all of their logos will be made up of simplistic shapes or outlines but are still easily recognised. When it comes to your own brand imagery, go for the simplest design you can. Logo’s with lots of intricate details will get lost when it’s reproduced on a small scale and when it’s blown-up, it will look too busy. Simple doesn’t mean it has to be boring, but by bringing together shapes, colours and typography simply, you can create something really appealing that is instantly recognisable.

THE FINAL WORD

There’s obviously a lot more that goes into brand imagery than can realistically be put into a one blog post. There’s a lot of planning, time and hard work that goes into this kind of thing. The logos, images and overall visuals you send out into the world need to accomplish a lot of things; from building customer trust, influences buying choices and engages with your audience. You need some patience as it’s not something you can do overnight, at least not if you want it to work effectively on your marketing strategy, but have some fun with it and please don’t try and overthink it - you’ll tie yourself up in knots and spend your time second guessing yourself.

a short(er) twilight-themed guide to my dissertation on memes

for anyone who wants to know why and how i wrote 8k words of academic theory on memes, but doesn’t actually want to read 8k words of academic theory on memes

so to begin with, a meme is really hard to define. this part is pretty boring if you don’t care about linguistics, so just take my word for it. i ask a lot of questions like “is a meme still a meme if” (no one shares it, no one makes different versions of it, there’s no standard format for it) and the answer is “sometimes! but we can’t tell you when!” and i also ask “how do you know when you’re looking at a meme?” to which the answer is “you just do! except when you don’t. that happens too.”

so basically, memes are like porn, you know them when you see them

then i talk about why it’s hard to study memes. this is fairly obvious if you think about it. imagine trying to find out the source of a random meme. and then every iteration of that meme anyone has ever made. then how popular each iteration got. how one iteration inspired another. how many times each iteration is reposted by someone else without credit. THEN, attempt to do that for every meme in existence. actually, just try and get a definitive count of how many memes exist. then, realizing that’s impossible, attempt to choose a “random” selection of memes to study not influenced by your personal online world. attempt to study memes that you don’t even know exist bc they don’t exist within your highly-customized online world. basically, memes are a rabbit hole and i don’t even pretend to do any sort of formal semi-comprehensive study, because i do not hate myself.

ok, moving on. i’m actually trying to write this post based on what I remember from my dissertation, which i haven’t reread in... a while. but i like to think i have a fairly good grasp of it bc i wrote it.

so basically the most important part about memes is that they function on at least 2 levels. let’s say there’s an active level and a passive level. the active level is the conversation you THINK you’re having when engaging with a meme. the clearly stated point/idea of the meme. the passive level is all the assumptions a meme is making in the background that, if you are not actively challenging, you are endorsing.

let’s see some examples.

this is a meme *i* made, so i’m gonna put myself on blast here

So the active level of this meme is the text/the point i’m trying to make, which is basically that bella is horny. but like, so horny that she’s willing to throw everything else in her life under the bus for some sexual satisfaction. i feel like this is fairly clear and most people interacting with the meme would consider that what the meme is about. we’re having a conversation about bella’s insatiable thirst for sparkling penis when we engage with this meme. 

sort of an in-between level that provides us with further information about the point i’m trying to make is context for the meme/meme format. this meme format is about someone choosing between a good thing and a bad thing. they’ve got the good thing, but they’re tempted by/indulging in the bad thing anyway. it’s fairly reasonable to come to the conclusion that i’m judging bella, when you combine the meme context with the actual text. i’m not only interpreting bella’s behavior here (she eschews her loved ones for sexual gratification), i’m also giving it moral value, labeling yeeting herself onto that dick = bad, building/maintaining relationships with friends and family = good. however, if you’re not familiar with this meme and it’s format, the fact that i’m throwing shade at bella is less clear, even if you understand how i’m interpreting her behavior. 

now on to the passive level of the meme. this meme makes some ASSUMPTIONS, and in engaging with the meme you’re validating those assumptions as “how this thing is/how the world works”. so here are a FEW of the assumptions this meme makes: 1. this is a man with his girlfriend checking out another girl. 2. the girlfriend is angry/jealous of her boyfriend expressing interest in another woman 3. everyone in this photo is heterosexual 4. men are always checking out other women/otherwise unfaithful, and this is normal/funny 5. this “couple” is monogamous 6. the “boyfriend” is relatable and we understand and condone his actions 7. maintaining a relationship with the “girlfriend” is a good decision and pursuing the girl in red would be a bad one

these assumptions might seem fairly clear, obvious, and straightforward, but they are ultimately, assumptions. we know NOTHING about the people in this photo and are projecting relationships on them. and clearly, we’re projecting some pretty intense gender and relationship roles on to them. and it’s necessary to accept those gender and relationship roles as “truth” long enough to understand the meme, because otherwise the meme wouldn’t make any sense, because the person who made it (me) made it with the understanding that you would be operating with the same set of assumptions about these people and their relationships as I am. understanding of what i’m trying to say with this meme is dependent on understanding and accepting the assumptions i’m handing you with it. 

and again, these ARE assumptions. take away the text, and there could be plenty of things going on in this photo. it’s possible none of these people are in romantic relationships, and this is a guy with his friend/family member, and they like to hold hands. this guy could be whistling at a dog he sees on the sidewalk because he wants to pet it, and the girl in blue is mad because they’re in a hurry. the girl in red could be his ACTUAL girlfriend, whose self esteem he’s boosting, and the girl in blue could be some random girl who wants his attention. this could be a couple in an open relationship, but the girlfriend is in the middle of an argument with this guy about something else. the guy could have shoulder checked the girl in red and is looking back to say sorry, and the girl in blue is mad bc shoulder checking this poor girl was a rude af thing to do. 

the reason why we don’t think any of those things ^^ upon seeing this meme is bc we live in the patriarchy. however, unfortunately, by sharing this meme uncritically, we’re also reinforcing the passive ideas within it, that men are unfaithful and it’s no big deal, that women are always competing with each other, that heterosexuality and monogamy are standard and correct.

active level of this meme: kristen stewart never smiles

in-between context level: this is the “most interesting man in the world” meme, where, bc he’s so interesting, he rarely has time to do normal things, and when he does them, he does them in a weird way. so according to this meme, kristen rarely smiles, and when she does, she does it in a weird way

passive level: kristen stewart SHOULD smile, and the fact that she doesn’t is weird/bad. WHY she doesn’t smile, and WHY she should, is left to viewer interpretation, but the implication is she’s doing something wrong. this meme wants you to fill in the blanks with the idea that kristen stewart is a bad actress because she doesn’t smile. it also reinforces the idea that women are SUPPOSED to smile and not be serious all the time. you could even go so far as to assume this meme is condemning bella’s character as a whole for being overdramatic and not smiling, playing into the narrative that women are hysterical and get upset about things that aren’t a big deal, and we shouldn’t take them seriously. personally, i think kristen’s acting in twilight was spot-on and super nuanced, and it was true to bella’s character that she didn’t smile often. i also think that kristen as a person smiles a reasonable amount and is only criticized for not smiling bc ppl so heavily associate her with bella. but if i were to share this meme uncritically, i wouldn’t just be reaffirming the (false) idea that kristen stewart doesn’t smile, i would also be reinforcing the idea that women SHOULD smile all the time, kristen is a bad actress, and bella is a bad character. i could go further into the sexism of all that but this is already long. 

HOW DID I GET AWAY WITH WRITING ABOUT THIS FOR MY MASTERS DEGREE?? 

basically, while you think you’re engaging in a conversation on one level with memes, you’re actually engaging in a lot of conversations. when it comes to political memes, often the “passive” levels of the memes come with a lot of ideas about how the world is or should work, which you reinforce when engaging with those memes. these passive assumptions shape the conversations we’re having, and the kind of policies we’re willing to support. memes come encoded with opinions on gender, relationships, race, sexuality, class, etc, and and make declarations about how these things DO or SHOULD work, shaping our own personal understanding of them. a meme that makes donald trump look stupid is advocating for different policies/political decisions than one that makes him look dangerous. and if all of our memes about trump focus on him looking stupid, we put more political effort into addressing that problem than the problem that he’s dangerous. memes can be used to challenge norms/question widely accepted ideas (here’s an example i literally just made):

but they can also be used to help people internalize ideas/messages that they wouldn’t be willing to accept uncritically if those ideas were presented in a different format. sometimes this is good, if you use memes to help people internalize good messages, like self-love. however, unfortunately in recent years this has mostly been used to radicalize lonely men, who internalize increasingly more hateful assumptions in memes and don’t realize that they’re doing it, because those messages are not explicit. just look at how pepe became a hate symbol. if you laugh at enough memes that operate on the assumption that women are sluts, you’re gonna start believing women are sluts, and are gonna be more likely to laugh at memes that imply that women are bad because they’re slutty, then that since they’re bad they don’t deserve rights, etc. 

basically, memes shape our understanding of how the world works because they make assumptions about how the world works that we have to agree with in order to understand the meme. when these assumptions involve identities or politics, they affect how we understand those things, and what conversations we have about them.

and that’s basically my dissertation on memes, minus a lot of other discussions about pop culture, humor, and group formation.

Nichomachus Introduction to Arithmetic

First post. Uh yeah title, managed to get past this and also streamed it.

Now, you might be wondering why I am doing this. I... I am not quite sure. I think it first started when watching wildberger (lol) talking about math history. It made me think that “hmm, maybe if I looked at how math developed historically I might get some deeper insight into the workings of mathematics”. Another part of the influence came from looking at Sadler’s Half An Hour Hegel Series. Really influenced my decision making.

Now this book in question was originally written by some pythagorean weed smoker Nichomachus. There are a lot of information here and it is sorta hard to parse it down into something that can be summarized. Another thing you may notice is that it took me quite a while to finally finish. I think the biggest factor actually ties into an insight I’ve had after just a little reading of ancient mathematics. Language is very very important. Far more important than it may seem if you just restrict yourself to human languages. 

Formal language is in itself a mathematical structure that might make some things more obvious, and other things not so obvious. Now, although he came after Euclid he didn’t provide any real proofs of his statements outside of illustrations. You also see that a lot of his statements can sometimes be rather trivial. Like he’d freak out about a result that you can verify with very simple algebra. Like something like how 2^(n-i) * 2^(n+i) = 2^n * 2^n or something like that. Like duh, no shit dude. Of course, the greeks didn’t have algebra and stuff so they couldn’t really see how obvious some of this stuff is.

The language also makes these texts absolutely brutal to read. Where something might be able to be expressed in a simple equation, since they do not have algebra, they have to write paragraphs to express what they are trying to say. An example of this is with the definition of the harmonic sequence

The proportion that is placed in the third order is one called the harmonic,3 which exists whenever among three terms the mean on examination is observed to be neither in the same ratio to the extremes, antecedent of one and consequent of the other, as in the geometric proportion, nor with equal intervals, but an inequality of ratios, as in the arithmetic, but on the contrary, as the greatest term is to the smallest, so the difference between greatest and mean terms is to the difference between mean and smallest term.l For example, take 3, 4, 6, or 2, 3, 6. For 6 exceeds 4 by one third of itself, since 2 is one third of 6, and 3 falls short of 4 by one third of itself, for I is one third of 3. In the first example, the extremes are in double ratio and their differences with the mean term are again in the same double ratio to one another; but in the second they are each in the triple ratio. - Nicomachus Book II, Chapter XXV

LIKE, this makes sense, sure! But looking at the damn equation for it (which Nicomachus is unable to provide) makes you instantly see what he is talking about.

Seriously. If you are a lay person that doesn’t understand why mathematicians don’t just explain their stuff in words, this shit is why. Nicomachus also gives methods of finding the harmonic meme, er I mean mean. However, this method is trivial to derive yourself just by some simple algebraic manipulations.

Now, as I said before, Nichomachus was also a pythagorean. Like any good pythagorean, he attaches metaphysical meaning to the math for some reason. I think the most remarkable example of this is with 1 and 2. To him, 1 represents ‘Sameness’ in the metaphysical sense since 1*1 = 1. 2 however represents ‘Otherness’ for multiple reasons. First of all, it is the first number that ‘dares’ to step out of the Same. Another reason is that the sum of odd numbers from 1 to n gives you a square number (n^2). This is epic to Nichomachus cause a square has equal sides. On the other hand, the sum of even numbers gives you a heteromecic (n(n+1)). This is also epic because you see that the difference between the sides is the least you can have for them to be other. Yeah, he is only talking about natural numbers.

Ok so this is what made Nichomachus lose his actual shit. If you sum a square number and a heteromecic number, you get a triangular number! (n(n+1)/2). I mean this is already obvious since we know the sum of consecutive numbers from 1 to n is a triangular number. If we add the sum of even and odd numbers that is just the same as adding the sum of consecutive numbers. The algebra is also rather easy to verify n^2 + n(n+1)

= 2n^2 + n

= n(2n + 1)

Put m = 2n -> n = m/2

=> n(2n + 1) = (m/2)(2[m/2] + 1) = m(m + 1)/2

As required.

So why did Nichomachus make such a big deal of this stuff? Well part of it is because the pythagoreans had this whole system where they’d use these dots that would be arranged into shapes. For instance, a square number, you arrange n^2 dots into the shape of an n by n square.

There are some rather beautiful illustrations of this:

A weird thing that comes from this is the fact that Nicomachus, the absolute mad man, didn’t believe 1 was a number. Rather numbers flowed from 1. The reason why he didn’t believe 1 to be a number was because 1 represents a point and so is zero dimensional non-shape? Yeah, there was probably some nuance to his thought process, maybe.

Now this whole constructing-numbers-with-alphas thing with its metaphysical significance gets even more wild when you connect it to plato’s own stuff. You know, how plato says the elements are like geometric shapes and stuff?

Now as you can see, the simplest platonic solid is the tetrahedron which is made out of *gasps* triangles! So at this Nicomachus upon learning this probably leaped upwards in amazement. Sameness and Otherness just have to be metaphysically prior to the elements! Naturally this pleases the weedagorean.

This shape thing also goes to three dimensions. For example, he’d describe cubic numbers (n^3). He also made a strange distinction between ‘brick’ and ‘beam’.

A number n is a brick <=> n = m^2 * k, k < m

A number n is a beam <=> n = m^2 * k, k > m

Again, another very strange distinction where it is rather confusing just why this was done. He also had an interesting way of visualizing this stuff with the dots. They will be overlaid subsections of the shape. For example, for the cube, he’d put n squares n by n each. For a triangular pyramid he’d do the triangle numbers from the base n(n+1)/2 then go to (n-1)n/2, (n-2)(n-1)/2, ... 1.

But this way of thinking about number I’d have to commit is very metaphysically restricted. Note that he never talks about quartic numbers. Sure, you could theoretically extend the logic and put n cubes n by n by n each, but they aren’t going to imagine that at this point in time. Meanwhile, when numbers are detached from this very crude quasi-geometrical interpretation and we go into algebra, suddenly we can think of n^k numbers without a sweat! Another step in which number where is less restricted to our traditional ways of conceiving it.

There’s still a lot more details to go over, for example he had a really weird classification of oven numbers. He grouped them into the even-times-even, even-times-odd, and odd-times-even. Even-times-even just means 2^n. Odd-times-even just means 2^n * (2n + 1). Even-times-odd just means 2 * (2n +1). Why does he classify it like this? I am not quite sure. Oh yeah, also obviously his own attempt at explaining what he means are far more convoluted because he didn’t use any proper language.

All i all, great meme book. I rate 10/10 wouldn’t read again.

I’m always sad to see the ones from the past leave forever and thus leave my life, but I’m always so excited to seek out new people who I can have a good laugh with. , for the first time in the two years of DR rpc, actually 2 years of rping in general, I feel like I belong. And honestly... thank you all for including me. It may not seem like a big role on your part, but it means the world to me.

Parler is like Twitter, but for Trump fans.

They’ve been banned from Facebook, purged from Twitter and blocked from Instagram. Some of them have been barred from setting foot on the continent of Australia. But you can still find them all on the fledgling social media network Parler.

The Twitter-like platform was initially hatched last year as a tool for digital news outlets to claw revenue back from big social networks like Facebook. But as those platforms purge some of the internet’s most inflammatory supporters of President Donald Trump over posts deemed dangerous or offensive, Parler has carved out a niche among these banned right-wing influencers — like Gavin McInnes, Laura Loomer and Milo Yiannopoulos.

As conservative distrust of social media giants rises to the top of Washington’s political agenda, Parler has also gained the notice of some bona fide Republican leaders: Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale and Utah Sen. Mike Lee both began posting on the site this month.

According to one person close to Trump’s campaign, the president’s team is considering setting him up with an account on the site. A senior Trump campaign official said that there was no imminent plan to have the president join the platform, but that Parscale is scouting Parler. “It’s something he’s aware of and is checking out,” the official said of Parscale. “We don’t currently have a plan to make a big move to the platform.”

Having Trump’s imprimatur would give the platform overnight cachet and satisfy calls from his social media-savvy supporters for the president to stick it to the Silicon Valley companies with which he maintains a strained, symbiotic relationship.

“Donald Trump should just switch social media platforms altogether because everyone will follow him,” said Candace Owens, a pro-Trump activist close to Trump’s campaign team. Owens, who is black, was recently banned from Facebook — and then swiftly reinstated with an apology from the company — for posting “Black America must wake up to the great liberal hoax. White supremacy is not a threat. Liberal supremacy is.”

Owens — who recently departed the conservative youth group Turning Point USA — introduced Parler to the pro-Trump grassroots with a December tweet that began, “Wow. Everyone just found out about the new Twitter. Just want to say that I WAS THE FIRST CONSERVATIVE TO JOIN.” Her tweet in turn linked to a tweet from the chairman of X Strategies, a conservative communications firm, promoting Parler.

Parler’s founder, John Matze, said the Owens tweet swamped his site with 40,000 new users, causing its servers to malfunction. (He also said that X Strategies approached him after the tweet. The firm now does public relations work for Parler.)

Parler is the french word for “Speak,” and is pronounced “par-lay.” But as its user base has grown, Matze has seen that Americans tend to pronounce the word phonetically, as in “parlor,” evoking the room in a house where friends might sit down to chat.

Matze and Owens said they first encountered each other late last year in New York at the Gatestone Institute, a think tank that was formerly chaired by Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton, and is known for its hostility to Islam.

Owens was there to speak, and Matze was working on integrating Parler with Gatestone’s website. Matze, who leans libertarian in his personal views, had not set out to cater to Trump supporters. Originally, he had conceived of Parler as a commenting plugin with social features that media outlets could integrate into their websites as a way to capture more engagement with their content themselves — rather than letting the bulk of engagement and ad dollars flow to established social media platforms.

He said he expected left-leaning digital publishers to become core partners. But as large social media platforms have responded to calls to curb extremism on their sites with bans of several far-right figures and other, more opaque measures like “shadow banning,” conservative users have become increasingly distrustful of the likes of Facebook and Twitter.

This has created an unexpected opening for Parler with pro-Trump users, though it is still far from challenging large social networks. Many aspects of its user interface, such as its search function, remain clunky. And its user base remains miniscule in the grand scheme of things.

Matze said the site had about 100,000 users in total. Twitter, by comparison, claims 326 million.

Activity on the site appears to be devoted mostly to a small universe of Trump-friendly discussions. On a recent Tuesday, trending topics on the site included “#IslamExposed,” “#IllegalImmigrants,” “#BuildThatWall” and “#WomenForTrump.” Even among Trump’s most avid online supporters, many have never heard of Parler. At the moment, the two outlets that appear to use the site most actively are Breitbart News and the Epoch Times, a newspaper associated with Falun Gong — a Chinese spiritual movement on the outs with China’s ruling Communist Party — that has attracted notice for its pointedly pro-Trump editorial line.

Given its limitations, even those sympathetic to Parler remain skeptical of its prospects. Will Chamberlain, who recently relaunched the conservative publication Human Events with a focus on social media censorship, said that though he plans to post his outlet’s content to Parler, he does not expect it to displace the reigning platform for news. “I think Twitter has a natural monopoly,” he said. “I think there are profound network effects.”

And even by the standards of free speech Twitter alternatives, Parler is small. Another platform, Gab, founded in 2016, claims a million users. “Parler is a ghost town,” said Gab’s founder Andrew Torba.

Like Parler, Gab takes a laissez-faire approach to offensive speech and has been a magnet for those banned from other platforms. Its users include white nationalist Richard Spencer and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. The perpetrator of a 2018 mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue was also a Gab user. There are even questions about whether Gab’s frog logo is an homage to Pepe, the cartoon frog symbol of the alt-right, though Torba has said the frog is an allusion to the Book of Exodus. Gab’s popularity with the virulently racist alt-right has tainted Gab’s brand, stymying its prospects for growth into a mainstream platform even as it amassed a large user base.

While Parler’s founder does not want to be limited to a far-right user base, much of the content posted on Parler falls into categories deemed offensive and discouraged by the large platforms — such as anti-Islam and anti-feminist sentiment. In one post typical of the site, a user with the handle @liberalismiscancer, shared a meme criticizing the burka, the body covering worn by some Muslim women, along with the comment, “Where are my fellow feminists why is the oppression of women ok if it’s in the name of ISLAM ? Why are Moslems treated differently free from criticism.”
