cool. the only surgeon who does top surgery in nova scotia decided to stop doing top surgery (as of may 3rd 2022). nova scotia is the province with the highest proportion of trans people- despite being the 7th most populated province (out of 10, there are also 3 territories, for a total of 13) this means that anyone wanting top surgery will need to go halfway across the country to have surgery (montreal, specifically). this complicates everything for patient and providers alike. (reminder that managing and filing GAS applications are an uncompensated task for providers)

on top of this, two specialists who would write letters of recommendation (which, for those who dont know, are necessary for our surgeries to get approved for funding through provincial insurance) stopped, and these two specialists were where the majority of patients get their letters from. our system is already so understaffed and fucked over and this just made it so much worse. losing a surgeon and two specialists in any regard is a massive blow to our system.

the surgeon claims that his decision was make due to “years of [his] lobbying for proper MSI billing codes, wherein [his] requests were routinely ignored”. the two specialists cite “capacity limitations” for their reasons for stopping new referrals for GAC. 

this is yet another hit that has been directly caused by the nova scotian healthcare crisis.

okay so a little lore dump thing for my bitb lab au ^_^ I want to mention that this Will include spoilers (and so i’m putting it under a cut) but please note that I have no current plans to write this fic out more than what you’ve already seen - certainly not to the level where it’s a coherent story at all

however! i am kinda encouraging ppl to write their own versions of it if they want. and if anyone Does do that -> how much they stick with this bit of lore/backstory is up to them

anyway onto the lore:

personally I didn’t want to go too in-depth with an unethical/morally ambiguous lab but there’s elements of that that can be built on. in this au I imagine they’re not all from Galloway bc I think it’s more interesting if Rand Kian and Rolan didn’t know each other beforehand - which feels impossible if they’re all in Galloway

Kian and Becky are exes and this was known by the lab - in fact, they were explicitly seeking out interns who knew either Becky or Rolan. kian’s music career was failing like with canon and someone approached him with the job offer and he took it. the timeline on this is a lil iffy but whateva. kian didn’t know becky was one of the bug monsters until he read the brief and signed the contracts etc etc

the idea here is that the scientists are trying to figure out if previous attachment to a person carries over to the bug-ified version

becky and rolan both turned themselves in to the lab and are there of their own volition. rolan is less there for studying/to help humans and more there bc he doesn’t trust himself and is freaking out. this is why kian says that rolan is safer than becky - as much as becky didn’t want to hurt kian, she wasn’t afraid that she would until it was too late

kian is there because the forms he signed essentially worked as a “i consent to being quarantined if something goes wrong” rand has also signed these. it was Very obvious and they weren’t trying to trick them. kian is mostly just pretending that he’s doing okay and that this is just a bit inconvenient/boring -> he’s pretty freaked out to understate it

relationship-wise: kian had a bit of a relationship with both becky and rolan. both of them very much knew about the other etc etc hashtag poly win! i say “a bit of” bc it was kinda cautious/early stages for both. rolan was starting to open himself up to the idea that he’s not inherently dangerous and then the thing with Becky happened so now he’s back to square 1

now! for the major spoilery bit:

i mentioned earlier that the scientists are specifically looking for interns with connections to the bugs and also that Rand doesn’t have any connection with them. this is bc there is actually a fourth bug monster that they are keeping in the lab and this is the Queen Aka Rachel

once rand gets settled into things they’d probably introduce him to Rachel and then I imagine all hell would break loose - I never really thought too much about plot which is why I’m kinda happy to move on from this idea (also I really don’t need another longfic on my plate o(-( man..) the queen is separated from the other bugs to try and minimise her control over them. i’m also kinda thinking that maybe becky came to the lab specifically to try and get close to the Queen to help her and then kian showed up and things got complicated

real quick: relationship endgame I imagine is nbr+becky dating kian

Thinking about alpha decay in nuclear physics as a metaphor for masking as a neurodivergent person.

The process of alpha decay is such that an atomic nucleus emits an alpha particle, which consists of two neutrons and two protons (equivalent to the nucleus of a Helium-4 atom, see figure below).

In doing so, the original nucleus transforms (decays) into a different atomic nucleus, and experiences a decrease in both mass and atomic number.

When a neurodivergent person masks in order to conform to the standards of societal expectations, they are "emitting" the pieces of themselves that are more acceptable and digestible by these standards to be perceived by neurotypicals. In other words, these pieces are the only things that neurotypicals will see when a neurodivergent person dons their proverbial mask.

But by doing so, the neurodivergent person becomes forever changed. They lose who they originally were. Alpha decay, as we understand it, is irreversible because energy is lost and cannot be restored. This is fundamentally true for masking as well. Healing is possible from masking - but the impact from trauma remains, and the original self is lost.

that hug is so soft, the way lewis understands george was just scared about him. and he hugs george not to confirm that he is there, present and healthy and okay, but he confirms he is also there *for* him because george is also in pain. it's the sheer vulnerability that lewis can extract from george that makes me MELTTTT.

RB George and Lewis can’t do anything in halves, they are fire and ice, life and death, sun and moon. They’re like magnets, they can’t just gently slide together , they crash into one another like it’s inevitable.

At the Monza hug, honestly Lewis also just misses George. He has no idea how to articulate that, even to himself, when their rivalry went from an inconvenience to fuel for the fire inside him. He worries about George, even if he doesn’t know how to say it. He looks wrong, like the live wire behind his smart mouth has gone dead. He wants to hug him to hear George tease him again. That doesn’t happen. It worries him more. Then comes Russia, and we all know how that goes.

while the fic currently plans to end around January ‘22, beyond that I imagine results would follow a similar pattern to IRL, though I would likely still have them win the season. I won’t be able to tell you how till December, but I would rather let Alonso win the WDC than I would Max. Maybe he’d finally retire…

Anyway, Merc misses something in developing their car. It’s utterly not George’s fault, the car was well in development before they signed him. Lewis deliberately agrees with James A and Toto to take on the brunt of experimental testing on the car. George isn’t completely comfortable with it, but Lewis sits with him and tells him he needs George to out drive their shit car to get constructors points while Lewis helps fix it. He’s got more experience, and George knows how to polish a AT shaped turd, he can do it in the Merc. He still looks like he’s waiting for Lewis to snap, he doesn’t want to be a tester again, still has the phantom bruises from Redbull, but he’s terrified Lewis will resent him. He resented max, what if Lewis hates him.

Lewis does his best to make George sit with him and pour over detail after detail with the engineers so George still feels like he’s helping. He keeps a hand on George’s back when they talk to their engineers. He knows full well George will struggle with Lewis’ pity, the festering wound of distrust in his gut not letting him take Lewis at his word. So he tries to make sure his feelings are displayed in other ways. He brings George coffee, he puts a hand on George’s nape when he’s fresh out of his helmet. Invites him to lunches or brings him one himself. But he also can’t push George. At the end of the day Lewis is having to come to terms with the fact George’s trauma just…‘isn’t about him. He can’t love George out of having it, he can’t force him to feel better, he can just take stuff at George’s pace and make sure he remembers that sometimes.

George is under enough pressure adapting to a new team, new car, and unflinching fan criticism. There’s a level of unlabelled PTSD that comes with the abuse from Redbull, George is waiting for them to turn on him, but the team are solid and calm, they encourage him on where he can improve, but never get angry at him. The press aren’t as nice. The questions volleyed at him tend to range from “so you regret leaving redbull right?” To “how does it feel to be beating Lewis in the same car”

That last one makes George feel sick with anxiety. He should be loving it, but they’re all trying to get him to be who he was against max. Cocky, Icarus flying too close to the sun. He can’t stop thinking about Lewis giving him the same scornful look as max did. When Nico fuckin Rosberg of all people tries to taunt George into calling himself better than Lewis, he has a panic attack. It’s just like France 21 all over again, when redbull started to see his success as a hinderance to max. He keeps it together in front of the cameras, even as his gut rolls at Nico trying to imply he and George are the same, two talented drivers who hate their teammates. He keeps it together back to his motor home. Where he ends up hunched in his bathroom trying to keep his melt down silent. Lewis finds him sobbing silently in a ball. When he tries to touch George, he flinches in fear, over exhausted brain no longer making logical connections.

Lewis ends up sat next to him; sides pressed together, telling George old stories about how much of an ass Nico was, how he lied to Lewis around a smile. when George’s sobs hitch and slow, he keeps going, keeps talking. Keeps talking till George asks him what he’s doing, telling George stories so he’ll feel better? Lewis says no, hes telling George about all the shit that Nico pulled, because George isn’t Nico. Because when George is angry with him, they argue and make up. When Nico was angry with him, he lied. He tells George how proud he is of him, for facing down all this pressure and still getting up the next day to do it again. Lewis knows how it feels.

Lewis makes him tea and doesn’t leave his side that night. When George asks why, Lewis says he doesn’t particularly like being alone after a bad result. They tease each other lightly over shared data, and Lewis tells him quietly he’s going to make sure they go easier on George in interviews, for once, George lets him.
