So I just finished watching Goncharov and of course I got to the "If we really were in love you wouldn't have missed" scene. Originally, I thought it wouldn't have as much as an effect on me because I've seen so many Tumblr edits of it already. I really thought it was going to lose its appeal to me because I was already exposed to it. Boy was I wrong! So many fucking tears were shed. My eyes fucking hurt through that scene. I still can't get over it. I am not okay. This is going to be my next obsession for a very long time and I am not ashamed of that fact.

Honestly not enough people understand how great Ice Pick Joe is in Goncharov (1973). His character is a masterclass on how to develop a character and the gut punch of his death and knowing he isn’t coming back hurts way too good. The scene where he reveals his backstory to Goncharov is incredibly tragic, and watching little Joseph first pick up the famous ice pick for the first time is excellent commentary on corruption as well as an extremely depressing reference to our society’s need for heroes and villains. If you rewatch the film you’ll see all the signals pointing towards his death, but there’s still tiny pieces you pick up on more on each viewing. Katya’s gun that she tucks into her sleeve before the infamous boat scene. The way Joe hugs Mario goodbye, knowing he might never come back from the boat. You don’t notice any of it at first, but then the scene comes and everything starts coming together. Katya pulls the gun out and aims it at Goncharov and fires, but Joe follows his orders from Andrey and dives in front of the bullet. Katya flees the scene as Goncharov weeps over his friend’s battered and bloody body. As he bleeds out, Joe cracks another joke with a faint smile. He then passes on the ice pick to Goncharov and goes limp. This serves as an excellent catalyst for the final showdown with Katya, as well as foreshadowing of Goncharov’s own fate at the end of the film.

Overall, Ice Pick Joe serves as an excellent character, as well as a foil to both Goncharov and Sofia. Not enough people talk about him, and I’m looking forward to see what they do with his character in the upcoming prequel spinoff series.

okay so we all know about the clock symbolism in goncharov but like. do you really know about the clock symbolism in goncharov? im a film major we looked at some brief scenes when we were discussing motifs and their effects in films a few months ago and my god out of every film we discussed even the few seconds of the goncharov scenes just,,, they were my favourite

(major goncharov spoilers ahead)

like the boat scene, when we dont think katya’s gonna make it, and clearly no one else does to, we get a close up of her hand and her watch still ticking. even though shes ‘stopping’ (not that we know shes gonna live just yet) time doesnt, the contrast of her heartbeat slowing vs the constant metronome of her watch and its so subtle but so briliant

again with the bridge scene, the clock imagery doesnt immediately stick out but you can see the clock tower looming in the background of the really important shots, especially when we linger on katya’s regret. the clock tower is still ticking away its still working like normal despite everything thats coming to a stop around the characters. this relationship is ending but time still continues no matter what

and just. throughout the film. the constant reminders of time. it ticks on, its unaffected by mere human happenings. it doesnt care if youre having a good (that one closeup of the brush of katya’s and sofia’s hands, you know the one, you can see katya’s watch again) or a bad (ice pick joe’s inevitable demise, nothing like a good old bell tolling) time, only that you are having a time. for everything goncharov stands for and represents and satiricalises, i really think this is one of my favourites. martin scorsese i applaud your incredible work

Okay so no shade on THAT coat but can we have a moments appreciation for the absolute banger of a houndstooth cape Katya steps out of the car in the opening act? As they get to the cemetery and she's looking towards the trees and we don't know what's on her mind yet (spoilers, it's Sofia) but just ugh!

Okay i feel like I'm cheating but 5&1/2 Minute Hallway by Poe means so so much to me. The song is meant to be paired with the book House of Leaves (spoilers but the song plays inside the book, adding to that mindfucky unreality that reassemblez Goncharov).

Like, holy shit. What can i say bout the five and a half minute hallway that hasn't been said already. The House represents the mental state of a person, and a person could lose themselves (physically or mentally) if traversing inside it too long. This manifests through impossible architecture (THE HOUSE IS QUARTER OF AN INCH LARGER ON THE INSIDE THAN ON THE OUTSIDE WHAT THE FUCKKKKK) like the impossibly long hallway in a supposedly regular surburban house

So yeah the song is about the House and a person going through it. And maybe about someone who tries to reach them?

At the end of the day, the story is very up to interpretations (usually horror. Which yeah fair) , but i am always filled with a sense of warmth when it is interpreted as a love story.

Okay. I watched Goncharov and now I can't stop thinking about Katya and Sofia. Three hours of film and there was just not enough of them. Especially Sofia. The power play between these two! Katya wants to feel some semblance of control but keeps getting fucked over by the men in her life (looking at you, Goncharov), and then she meets Sofia who just dances rings around everyone figuratively and literally. The ballroom scene is a nice visual metaphor here. (Everything about the ballroom scene! The dresses, the cocktails, lighting the cigarette! Is it hot in here?) Sofia lets Katya feel something besides contempt and isolation, but Katya is staring into the sun and she doesn't care that it is blinding her because it's been so long since she's felt the warmth. That passion just can't last, and (spoilers) it doesn't.

Guys, it's non-targeted advertising. The best you get is choosing a specific country. It's not the laser-beam powered by cookies and tracking software that's part of the wider internet hellscape, it's spraying a bunch in a general direction.

It's the way adverts used to be and the way we want it to go back to being.

One thing I love about Goncharov is that Tumblr just decided it was a 1973 film.

That's actually really early in Martin Scorsese's career. Depending on when in the year it came out, it'd either be his third or fourth film, coming out the same year as his breakthrough film, Mean Streets.

It'd possibly be his first film with Robert De Niro (also in Mean Streets), and would absolutely be his first film with Al Pacino, who he never worked with until 2019's The Irishman.

If this was a real piece of lost media, you could absolutely see why film buffs would be so into it.

Okay, here's my idea:

The British should put a time limit on the Monarchy.

Not like declaring a republic tomorrow, but deciding on a date in the future that ends the British Monarchy.

And there's a perfect date for it coming up!

October 14th, 2066.

A thousand years since the Battle of Hastings. A thousand years of this one specific bloodline ruling England.

Call time on the Monarchy after exactly one thousand years. Nice, and neat.

Even better: Charles isn't living 44 years. He'll be gone in about twenty. Now William? He's what, 40? Yeah, he can live another 44 years. His great grandmother was over a hundred, his granny was 96, William can make it to 84 barring accident or assassination.

So on October 14th 2066, William the Last steps down a thousand years after William the First won the crown.

Nice, neat, and fair. William gets the crown he's been waiting forty years for already, but ten-year-old George grows up without expectation of it.

Have a nice big abdication ceremony, even.

Okay but am I the only one who hasn't watched all of Goncharov? There was a point in my video editing and animation narrative classes in school that they kept showing the same clips of the same movies over and over again so many times that I sort of lost my taste for watching them at all, because we were pushed to over-analyze them before we were allowed to enjoy them, you know? And it was the classics- the shower scene from Psycho, the school scene from The Birds, Hal 9000's betrayal from 2001 A Space Odyssey, and the big Andrey and Goncharov confrontation scene from Goncharov. But since then I've at least seen Psycho and actually did enjoy it enough to analyze it for fun, so seeing everyone analyze Goncharov again sort of makes me want to see more than just Andrey and Goncharov standing with their little guns and shit! I never even got to see a scene with Katya or Sofia, and tbh the storylines of the women in this movie sound more interesting than the main plot with the men! In fact I didn't even know Goncharov had a wife at all until y'all told me, they didn't even mention her in school and made it sound like everyone he loved was dead already and Andrey was the only one he even knew who was still alive :/ I hope that's not a spoiler or I will be so mad

anyone remember the good old days of your friend giving you a burned CD and you importing that CD into itunes so you could listen to it on your ipod and itunes couldn’t grab any data from the CD so all the tracks were called ‘Track 01′ etc and you had to track down all the info yourself and enter it?

anyway i still have a Rankins track called Track 02 from a burned CD my uncle gave us when I was a child and wore tf out in my discman and then imported onto my first ipod in like 2009. apparently i didn’t have a tracklist for it, and this track shall forever be named Track 02 because I can’t possibly change it now.
