Do you know Swains Lane & could people go grocery shopping there?
Yes, I've been there a few times. Swain's Lane is on the Highgate side of the Heath. There's a little Tesco Express, a baker's, a fishmonger, a few cafes - but it's a very short street and it's also the haunt of hundreds of sixth formers from the two big girls' schools about ten minutes' walk away. Harry has been spotted near there before with Olivia.

ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET (2023)

Screenplay by  Kelly Fremon Craig.
Directed by Kelly Fremon Craig.
Distributed by Lionsgate Films. 106 minutes. Rated PG-13.
Judy Blume seems to be going through a pop culture resurgence. Just last week Judy Blume Forever, a documentary on the life and career of the author who pioneered young adult novels, started spreading through towns across the country. Now, after 53 years, we have the release of a film based on what is arguably Blume’s most beloved book, the sweet and refreshingly frank coming-of-age story Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret has been a standard of school curriculums and a favorite of young girls for decades. It is a smart and funny look at growing up in the 1960s, trying to figure out all the important things in life for tween girls – religion, family, puberty, friendship, boys…. And, for better or worse, I have never seen a film which spent so much time subtly contemplating menstruation.
The film version is helmed by writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig, who has surprisingly been pretty much missing in action since 2016, when she released yet another fantastic coming-of-age film for young women, the original narrative The Edge of Seventeen.
It turns out that the mix of Judy Blume and Kelly Fremon Craig is a potent one, because Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is a delight. It is an intelligent, empathetic, humorous and not the least bit patronizing look at childhood.
Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) is a twelve-year-old girl in the midst of a lot of upheaval. It is the late 1960s (I’d say about 1968, on a guess.) Her parents (Rachel McAdams and Benny Safdie) have just moved from her beloved New York City to the suburbs of New Jersey. She’s left behind her friends and now must negotiate a new school. She misses her beloved grandmother (Kathy Bates) and her home.
And she’s not sure how she feels about her new friends, particularly Nancy (Elle Graham), who thinks she knows everything about everything, but deep down may just be a scared and mean little girl.
The film looks at Margaret’s search for faith – her dad is a lapsed Jew; mom is a lapsed Catholic. They have always contended that Margaret will decide on her own religious beliefs when she is ready – much to the disappointment of the grandparents. She is also negotiating junior high school (that’s middle school now) politics and whether or not the boy down the street is cute and likes her.
It's a simple story of growth, and yet it’s also layered and complex. Even the so-called villains (we’re looking at you, Nancy) are just confused and scared of what is coming at them way too quickly. And none of these kids, particularly Margaret, can just sit back and enjoy just being children, instead rushing growth that they will eventually come to all too soon.
Young Abby Ryder Fortson is a wonderful center to the story, and McAdams and Bates are delights as mom and grandmom.
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret isn’t trying to answer all of the questions of childhood and puberty, but it is a sweet and nostalgic look at the journey to young adulthood.
This movie was worth the long wait.

Alpha Dog (2006)
Tumblr media
When I sat down to watch Alpha Dog, the odds were stacked against it. Not only did a lady at my video store accidentally spoil the ending for me, but I didn’t exactly see myself warming up to a bunch of spoiled rich kids who have nothing better to do than drink and consume copious amounts of drugs. I found it emotional; a poignant drama with sharp moments of tension.
Based on real-life events, 15-year-old Zack Mazursky (Anton Yelchin) who is kidnapped by a gang of drug dealers led by Johnny Truelove (Emile Hirsch). Taken while walking by himself, Zack is being held as collateral so his brother, Jake (Ben Foster), will repay his drug debt.
Director Nick Cassavetes manages to make you care for the characters in this film, which is no small feat. Everyone is a mess, or on their way to becoming a mess. They’re all living in this strange realm where everyone has so much money they don't know how to spend it and wind up getting involved in drugs. This is where the world of the rich and the poor collide. There shouldn't be a conflict but these people are barely adults and profoundly immature. They end up getting in way over their heads.
If circumstances had been different, these kids could've become perfectly upstanding citizens with a bright future. Instead, the worship of rap videos and search for the next thrill brings them down a dark path. I was able to see something of myself in these characters because I envied them in a way. They lived carefree lives, unaware of the future looming over the horizon. Consequences were a foreign concept. You keep thinking some authority or sudden realization will turn things around but it doesn't. You want everyone to get out alright, for this to be just a normal day in the end. You get to know the ins and outs of the characters, which makes it all feel real.
This movie sweeps you up in all kinds of emotions. You experience fear when Zack gets picked up off the street, sorrow when his parents realize he's missing, hope when the young adults caught in the mess realize what kind of mess they had gotten themselves in. There are moments of joy as well when you get to know the people involved and come to see them as more than just bad guys or broadly painted heroes.
Alpha Dog is greatly aided by great performances from everyone and the documentary-like approach to the filmmaking. It’s more than just the performances; it’s the casting too. Everyone looks the part, feels the part; as if they really were the people involved in the real-world case and the cameras had somehow snuck into their lives to give us a glimpse of what happened. Although I'd been told how it ended, I was still completely invested. It's an eye-opener.
Alpha Dog is terrific. It's is a great drama with some coming-of-age elements and a tiny bit of a thriller sprinkled on top that makes it shockingly and surprisingly entertaining. (On DVD, October 25, 2014)

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. It’s open for anyone to join in and is a great way to share what you’ve been reading! All you have to do is answer three questions and share a link to your blog in the comments section of Sam’s blog.
The three Ws are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
A similar meme is run by Lipsyy Lost and Found where bloggers share This Week in Books #TWiB.
  What I’m reading now:
Nothing Important Happened Here by Will Carver
I’ve only just started this book as I’m writing this post but I can already tell it’s going to be brilliant. I’m really looking forward to sitting down for a chunk of time and reading this one.
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie
I was in the mood for an Agatha Christie and this one was the first I spotted on my TBR so I picked it up. I’m really enjoying it although I have a strong suspicion about whodunnit which makes me think I may have read this before (perhaps many years ago during my pre-teen years when I devoured all the Agatha Christie books my local library had!).
James Baldwin and the 1980s: Witnessing the Reagan Era by Joseph Vogel
Shamefully, I discovered this was on kindle from NetGalley and I’d been approved to read it almost two years ago. I’m reading it now though and it’s a fascinating read. It’s reminded me that I need to read more of James Baldwin’s writing.
The Eleventh Day by Anthony Summers
I’m on the final part of this book now so I may well have finished it by the time this post goes live. It’s been a really interesting, and at times very alarming read, about the politics in the years leading up to 9/11. It’s a book I’ve had to take my time with but it’s one I’d recommend.
  What I recently finished reading:
The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer
I bought a copy of this book on my kindle when it was published but when I spotted it on my library audio book app I decided to part-read and part-listen to it. I very much enjoyed this book and ended up reading it in just a couple of sittings. The characters aren’t always very likeable but they were believable and I was keen to see where the story was going to take me.
The Christmas Wish List by Heidi Swain
This is my first Christmas read of the year and I adored it! It’s perfect for the lead up to Christmas and was great escapism for me this week. I’ll be reviewing this one for the blog tour at the end of this month but in the meantime I highly recommend it.
Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain by Oliver Sacks
This is another book that I got through my library app and I found it a fascinating listen. Due to having a neurological condition myself I’m always so interested in books about things that affect the brain. This covers quite a wide range of stories and it was engaging the whole way through.
The Last by Hanna Jameson
I’ve had an ARC of this on my TBR since the end of last year and finally managed to get to it in my quest to catch up before the end of this year. I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t quite as good as I was hoping. It felt like it was going to be something different to what it was. Having said that it did keep me reading so it the writing was engaging.
The Silent Ones by K. L. Slater
This was a really good thriller looking at the aftermath of two ten year old girls accused of murder. I was gripped by this book from the start and really enjoyed how the story unfolded. I recommend it.
The Accidental Love Letter by Olivia Beirne
This is such a gorgeous novel about a woman called Bea who recieves a letter addressed to B and decides to open it even though she’s not sure it’s meant for her. I devoured this book and adored it. My review is due to be published today so you’ll be able to find out my full thoughts in that post.
Platform Seven by Louise Doughty
This was another great read. It follows a woman who is dead and her spirit is now stuck at Platform Seven. Gradually she reveals her story and what led to her death. This book was so gripping and I was on the edge of my seat as the story is revealed. I will review this one soon but I recommend it in the meantime.
What I plan on reading next:
One Week ‘Til Christmas by Belinda Missen
I’m going to be on the blog tour in a couple of weeks so I’ll definitely be reading this book in the coming week and I’m so looking forward to it. It sounds really festive!
The School Friend by Alison James
This is another ARC that has been waiting to be read for longer than I’d have liked so it’s a priority for me this week. I’m sure I’m going to love this one, it sounds like my kind of read!
The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr by Frances Maynard
I’ve been wanting to read this book for ages now and I’m in the mood for it so am hoping I can make time to read it this week.
Pretty Is by Maggie Mitchell
This is a book I’ve owned for about three or four years now and I’m still really keen to read it so want to make an effort to pick it up in the coming days!
What have you been reading this week? I’d love to hear. And if you take part in WWW Wednesdays or This Week in Books please feel free to leave your link below and I’ll make sure to visit and comment on your post. 🙂
