I wrote a new blog post on 35mmc! (Deschutes River Trail with an Olympus 35RD and Ektachrome 200)
Heads up! I’ve got a new blog post up on 35mmc. It’s about using my 📸 Olympus 35 RD with some expired 🎞Kodak Ektachrome 200 slide film when Emee and I rode the Deschutes River Trail last month as part of our Gorge visit. Check out the blog post here. More photos from that adventure can be seen below. Thanks, Hamish! Oh yeah, Hamish of 35mmc mentions how he’s not that into fixed-lens rangefinders…

Olympus 35 RD
F.Zuiko 40mm 1.7
HP5 (fresh)
Acquisition I bought this through eBay from a guy who does restorations on the Olympus Trip 35.  The main attraction was a small sized quiet rangefinder camera with a 1.7 aperture lens.  I also own an Olympus 35 RC, and liked it so much I figured this would be a better choice.
History and features The Olympus 35 RD was made between 1975, and 1979.  This camera was also the last rangefinder made by olympus before the era of autofocus auto everything cameras.
The Olympus 35 RD is packed with features.  The big features of the time would have been shutter priority metering, and guide number based flash.  I’ve used the metering, and it works pretty well.  I’m not a big shutter priority fan … but it works well.  I have never tried the flash on this camera.  I have no reason to believe it doesn’t work, and I have no reason to use it.  I shoot this camera fully manual.
The basic features include a whisper quiet shutter from B-500, aperture from 1.7 to 16, a hot shoe/external sync contact, self timer, modern film counter, threaded shutter button, and a tripod bush.
The rangefinder patch on my example of this camera is pretty dim.  However, the rangefinder/viewfinder in this camera is pretty nice, with an aperture needle displaying the aperture on a half-press while in manual mode, or in shutter priority.  The frame lines and patch appear yellow, and there is some red on the needle gauge for the shutter priority in a light too low situation.
Appearance The Olympus 35 RD is small boxy rangefinder, with chrome detail, some black paint, and black leatherette.
My copy of the RD has been slightly modded by the prior owner.  The camera has been smartly recovered in a spongy brown leather, and also has had a small silver metal knob glued to the focus ring that acts like a Lens-Tab, making focusing easier.
Usage The feel of this camera in hand is nice.  Also the camera is small, has a discreet shutter noise, and nice rangefinder.  All hallmarks of a nice streetshooter.  I looked back through my old photos taken with this camera and realized I never really used it to shoot people on the street, so I loaded some HP5 and tried for some street shots.
The focus throw is very short,  and has markings in meters, and feet.  Due to the short throw, zone focusing is pretty nice with this camera.
All of the exposure controls are on the lens barrel.  The outer ring is the shutter, the next ring is the focus, and the ring closest to the body is the aperture.  With that said the design of this camera reveals that maybe the engineer designed the camera with the idea in mind ‘Everyone will keep this camera set to A’.  The aperture ring is hard to find quickly, and hard to turn without either moving the focus ring accidentally or moving the shutter ring accidentally, or moving both.  The original owner may have done better by gluing that little metal knob to the aperture ring.
The lens on this camera is nice, and the 1.7 aperture makes it attractive for low light.  Also this camera renders color (sorry all my samples are B&W) pretty nicely, and with a 6 element lens it’s pretty capable and crisp at mid-apertures.
I’m an Olympus fan, and I like this camera.  It’s great for zone focusing street shots, and contemplative color.
PROS
1.7 aperture lens, nice for low light
Small compact, feature rich rangefinder
Quiet shutter
CONS
I personally always prefer aperture priority
The aperture ring is hard to turn without fouling up your other settings

I’ve been taking photos for a long time. I love the idea of capturing moments. I want to truly learn how to take photos and understand the true art form of taking photos. A good friend of mine had some film cameras that she was going to move on from and she decided to offer them up to me. She game me an #Olympus35RD and a #MinoltaXG1. I absolutely have no idea how to use these cameras but I am geeked to learn about them. Time to take myself and my craft more seriously. 📷 by @techandmusicfan. #PhotoByTechAndMusicFan #PhotoByTMF #IamNotAPhotographerIJustTakePics #CapturerOfMoments #ImageArchitect #MomentCurator #FilmCamera... — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/312WGcq

Three months in with the Yashica YF, and a reflection on my rangefinder stable
Well, look at that: A vintage rangefinder with a fancy leather bag. So…urban. On my birthday last August, Emee gifted me a Yashica YF rangefinder. It needed some TLC before I could really go to town with it, so I dropped it off at Advance Camera and picked it up after I got back from Tokyo in January. The Yashica YF is a pretty rare circa 1959 machine that uses interchangeable lenses with the…
