!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's from One Art by Elizabeth Bishop! I love it so much! I have a soft spot for Villanelles anyway, they're one of my favourite poetic forms, and this one was always my mother's favourite poem so I grew up loving it, and then I got to study it in high school and I loved it EVEN MORE!!! It makes me so sad but it's oddly determined and hopeful and just so good!!!

An anti rec sorta: stalking Jack the Ripper series :/

Like. Idk. This series just tries too hard. The first book wasn’t horrible, the second book was out of pocket and ridiculous but really enjoyable. Then the third and fourth books SUCK like Audrey Rose tries so hard to be like “oh. I like forensics. That means I crave death, I am certainly going to hell for dealing with such a macabre line of work” Thomas as well is supposed to be the suave flirty cocky heart of gold love interest, but in reality he pissed me off. The book and his character also. Love slapping you across the face with how ✨ progressive ✨ it is (which isn’t a horrible thing if done correctly, but this series just beats you over the head with it)

v interesting that you should say this! i haven’t heard a ton abt stalking jack the ripper but what i have heard i think has only been good. i will say i had no idea it had four books tho haha i thought there were only one or two. also yeah media that just beats you over the head w how progressive it is can be super annoying :/ like obviously taking a stand like that is important but w some works it’s just repetitive without actually making the point or effectively tying it into the story and whatnot

sweet, savory, or spicy? Savoury. I have a massive sweet tooth, don't get me wrong, but seriously those pre-cut sandwich meats? They are so good! And I don't feel sick after eating lots of them, unlike chocolates.

craving: definitely chocolates, and this crepe recipe I had on a vacation in Germany around 6 years ago. The texture was so unique.

Ooh Christine Daae and Erik?

YES it's toxic as all get out. Like, looking at their dynamic as is in ANY of the adaptations? Horrible. -9000/10.

BUT. the POTENTIAL. Is *chef's kiss*

In an ideal world, they both help each other realize their full potential (Christine as an artist, Erik realizing he is DESERVING of love). Erik DOESN'T manipulate and lie to Christine. He DOESN'T MURDER people (I can probably excuse him killing the people who abused him when he was in the "freak show" like in the 2004 movie. But that's a hard probably). Maybe he can still commit a little extortion and get that 20k francs a month, as a treat. And Christine CHOOSES to be with him. Not because he threatened to blow up a whole quarter of Paris, but because she is mistress of her own actions and she loves him for who he's become. They GROW together and live HAPPILY ever AFTER!!!

EDIT: WAIT I TAKE THAT BACK the 1990 TV miniseries has a NON-murderous Erik so he can stay.

Why do people keep making cinema when nothing can top that scene from How To Train Your Dragon (2010) when Hiccup and Toothless and flying for the first time and the score swells and you can almost taste the wind as your stomach drops and they race through the stones, relying on instinct and their trust in each other smh

i know i talk about a lot of movies like this and i know this one is ten years old and animated but the cinematography is truly top tier. i’m a nerd and have a copy of the concept art book for httyd and they talked about wanting the camera to feel “live action,” to feel first person, and it’s so successful. like i genuinely feel like i’m on the back of a dragon during those flight scenes, i feel like i’m standing behind hiccup when he comes across the downed dragon, it pulls me in by the throat every time and doesn’t loosen its grip until the credits. good writing, incredible lighting design, and unparalleled music help with that, too, but one of the things that make this movie particularly special is the camera work. and it’s all on a computer!! animators never fail to astound me!

but yes yes yes that scene (and the forbidden friendship, the romantic flight, and the downed dragon scenes) ALWAYs take my breath away!! this film is a gift and i can’t properly express my love for it enough.

Not book stuff but also it looks like you’re into anime? I’m trying to get more into the genre and am wondering if you have any recommendations 😊

yes! i’m actually not super acquainted w anime either but i’m trying to get into it more too. in terms of what i have already seen:

your lie in april is one of my top pieces of comfort media. stealing the netflix summary: “after his mother’s death, a piano prodigy’s will to play disappears. but meeting a free-spirited girl who plays the violin turns his life around.” it Definitely has its flaws and can be a bit pretentious and cliché but personally i am a musician who first watched it in middle school when my mental state took a decided turn for the worse so it is v close to my heart & has really helped me get thru some things :”) it’s inspiring too; whenever i go through a slump w music chances are i’ll throw it on for a rewatch to remind myself why i love it so much. a main theme is also “life’s short so we should let go and live it to the fullest” which is smth i tend to struggle w so it gets me on my feet in that sense as well. lastly the visuals and soundtrack etc are stunning. fair warning though, child abuse is present in flashbacks and the ending is notorious for making ppl cry

studio ghibli is a given ofc it is perfect for when you just want to snuggle up w a blanket and hot chocolate and relax <3 if you aren’t familiar w it it’s a film animation studio and all the movies it produces just. really make you appreciate and see the beauty in the little things of life it’s so refreshing! i haven’t watched a ton but if i had to choose a favorite i love ponyo i just think it is so delightfully bizarre. really most of the ones i’ve seen are but ponyo in particular is so cute and carefree abt it. anyway no matter which one you pick it will be a positively blissful experience 😌

fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood i just think is neat!! i love the cast of characters and the sense of humor it employs. the relationships between the main trio are v entertaining and it really knows how to get you to like them. it’s a super popular anime but if you don’t know it the title is pretty self-explanatory, it’s abt two brothers dealing w alchemy hahaha for an actual summary i would just look it up real quick. its overarching plot is pretty serious? but like i said it’s v enjoyable. it achieves a good equilibrium between funny, cute, dark, etc moments. i haven’t finished it yet but i would really like to!! maybe this week i’ll pick it up where i left off. if you haven’t watched it yet i would definitely recommend it, it’s a great starting point

soul eater is a wacky one (i think this post summarizes it well) and i haven’t finished it either (though god knows how many times i’ve restarted it) but i think it is fun and its wackiness is part of the appeal <3 i haven’t watched it in a While so i can’t pinpoint specifics but even though it’s v action-packed it balances the mood w moments of light-heartedness and it knows when to take a step back and breathe. i WILL say there’s some random witchy catgirl that it sexualizes sometimes which is obviously weird but honestly not super out of the ordinary for anime of its genre and it’s not a major thing anyway so. you take what you can get lgnsmf basically don’t take it too seriously. the openings slap as well

I’m not the anon who requested fantasy book recs but IM READING UPROOTED AT THE MOMENT TOO!!!! I’m almost done it and I’m LOVING it so far and I 100% agree that the Dragon and Agnieszka totally remind me of Darklina!!!!

It’s so much fun! Some friends on Twitter recommended it and I’m so glad I listened. I can’t believe I’d never heard of this author before, but she’s written a lot of fantasy so I’m looking forward to checking out more of her stuff :)

I actually have a real bookmark! but when I can’t use it (because I’m reading several books at once for example) I just remember the page or chapter number.

5: are you self-conscious of your smile?

YES, very. I never smile in pictures, certainly not with teeth and try avoiding a tight-lipped smile as much as I can because I genuinely look hideous when I’m smiling. sometimes I even stop myself from laughing with friends cause i suddenly remember i’m ugly :(

23: what’s your favorite thing to do on lazy days where you have 0 obligations?

god i wish that were me... the first thing that came to mind was to go to a waterpark? which I’ve done zero (0) times in my life but now I really want to do that. basically do something fun and lively with friends, go to an amusement park, grab drinks, fool around in a park, be outside. obviously this is not covid-friendly, so if we’re talking of staying home, then i’d be probably spend the entire day reading or writing in my backyard. make myself a milkshake or something. a lovely late spring day 💜

34: tell us about the stuffed animal you kept as a kid. what is it called? what does it look like? do you still keep it?

I had several, but the main one was a blue, white-spotted teddy bear. I named him Cotik for absolutely no reason, which apparently means “kitty” in Russian? you can imagine I knew no Russian at all when I was three. he’s still in excellent shape tbh, though he’s been mended and “operated on” by my mom a few times! and of course I still have him! I need to cuddle something at night or else I just feel... empty
