“Why can’t Maggie be in here?”

An older woman with auburn hair named Deanna smiles at you. She was in charge of Alexandria, and she would be deciding if your group would get to stay or not. You didn’t mind talking to her initially, but what made you uneasy was her videoing your conversation and not allowing your sister to sit in the room with you.

“I won't bite,” she smiles. “I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable; I just want to ask you a few questions.”

When your group first arrived in Alexandria, everyone was made to hand their weapons over, and now being asked personal questions... it felt intrusive. Deanna straightens out old-fashioned flora curtains before wiping her finger along her bookcase, which was fully stacked. She smudges the dust between her fingers, then turns to you and asks, “How long have you been out there?”

“Uh, I’m unsure. Two years maybe.”

She sits down in the chair across from you and asks, “How did you all find each other?”

“When someone got shot, they were brought to my family's farmhouse so my dad could help save them.”

She looks intrigued. “Is your father a doctor?”

“No, he was a veterinarian.”

“Smart man. I’m assuming because you’re referring to him in the past tense, he’s no longer with us.”

“I lost my dad not long ago.”

“Have you lost anybody else?”

“I lost my big brother Shawn, mom, and cousin Arnold all on the same day. Walkers attacked them. My dad and sister were killed by people.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” she says, sounding sincere. “How old are you?”

“Fifteen.”

Deanna shakes her head and says, “You are far too young to have lost so much. I truly am sorry. So, as far as I’m aware, Rick is the leader of your group.”

“Yeah, pretty much.”

“How do you think he does?”

You thought you could handle a few more questions, but tears began to swell. You didn’t like being asked anything because it brought everything you'd been through back. “Rick is a good person; everyone in our group is. We’re a family.”

Your group was given two large houses to stay in for now, but so far everyone has just gathered into one and is taking turns cleaning up. Being in the walled-off community felt like being in a TV show where the rich housewives live in the suburbs. The only thing you felt was normal was Daryl cutting open a possum while sitting on the porch. Your eyes widen when Rick walks outside; he has showered and shaved off his beard, making him look like a completely different person.

But then again, you looked different. After showing Rosita how to braid your hair, a nice blonde woman named Jesse dropped off some clean clothes for you to wear, along with toys for Judith.

“Has anyone been there yet?” You point to the house next door.

“I don’t think so,” Carl says, looking up at his dad. “Can we go check it out?”

Hesitantly, Rick agrees. “You can go look; just be quick and stick together.”

The house next door was nearly identical, aside from a few decorations. Growing up on a farm, you’d never dreamed of living in a modern home built like this. Carol had come with you to check it out; she was now leaning out of the kitchen window, talking to the people who live in the house next door.

When you hear a thumping noise coming from upstairs, you jump and grab Carl’s wrists. “Shit, sorry.” Feeling heat rush to your cheeks, you let go. “I’m just on edge.”

“It’s fine.” Carl offers you his hand. “I get it; I’m scared all the time too.”

He loosely holds onto your hand as you walk up the stairs, and when you reach the room, the noise is coming from Carl. He pulls out his knife and waits for you to do the same before pushing the door open. The room looks like a typical teenage hangout spot; the floor was covered in magazines, comics, CDs, and weirdly designed pillows with posters of bands you’ve never heard of before pinned to the walls.

“It’s weird, isn’t it?” Carl says, “These are probably things we would have been interested in if things were different.”

“Not me,” you sigh. “I would never have been allowed magazines with half-naked women on the cover. Shawn was grounded for two months when Maggie found a magazine with a woman wearing nothing but a bikini under his bed.”

Carl laughs while kicking a dusty blanket aside to see what’s underneath it. After a few moments of silence, he says, “You never talk about your brother much.”

A fleeting smile tugs at your lips. Being the youngest, Shawn completely doted on you, and as a child, you would follow him around like a shadow. He always had time for you. His death hit you so hard because you thought he would always be there to protect you, but he died trying to save your mom from walkers.

“Hope? You okay, you kind of zoned out there.”

Hearing Carl’s voice, you snap out of your thoughts and back to reality. “Yeah,” you say, smiling at him. “I was just thinking that my brother would have really liked you.”

You bite the insides of your cheeks to stop yourself from laughing. Judith looks so confused as an elderly couple. Natalie and Bob Miller fuss over her. It was clear there weren’t many kids around, and this was the first time anyone had seen a baby in years, so they were all excited to see Judith.

“Is that Jesse?” Carl asks quietly.

You look up and see his dad talking to her, “Yeah, she’s nice.”

“My dad seems to like her. He says we’re to go to her house later and meet her son, Ron.”

It was weird; the idea of being a normal teenager was starting to freak you out.

After showing you around his home, Ron led you and Carl up to his bedroom to introduce you to his friend Mikey and girlfriend Enid. You were still trying to wrap your head around the idea of returning to school in the afternoons, which was held in a garage, when Carl nudges you with his elbow to gain your attention.

“Sorry, what?”

Ron chuckles. “I said cool bracelet; where do you get it?”

“Em, Carl found them,” you mutter.

“Neat, kind of like a souvenir of the apocalypse.” He pushes his bedroom open. “Enid, Mikey, this is Carl and Hope.”

After an awkward introduction, Ron lists the different things that they do while hanging out, such as reading comics, playing video games, and playing pool. The fact they had electricity from solar panels was mind-blowing enough, but seeing all the stuff they had was leaving you speechless.

You smile at Enid as you sit on the edge of Ron's double bed, while Carol joins the other boys in playing video games. You thought it was a little bit in bad taste; they were playing a zombie video game, but don’t mind watching until a particular scene happens: one of the players finds a sword and begins decapitating the undead.

You and Carl exchange a look before you excuse yourself. “I gotta go; I need to help Maggie with something.”

Rick isn’t the slightest surprised when he enters Carl’s new bedroom and finds you in it as well. You were staring out the window in his room that overlooks the woods outside, watching as walkers gathered on the opposite side of the wall. While Carl lay on his bed, staring up at the ceiling.

Rick sits at the edge of the bed, asking, “How was Ron’s house?”

“What do you think of this place?” Carl asks him.

“Well, I think it seems nice.”

“Yeah, I like it here. I like the people, but they’re weak. And I don’t want us to get weak.”

The people here don’t have a clue what it’s like on the outside, and if the walkers broke through the wall, most of them would be dead in five minutes.

When Rick leaves, you go and sit on the floor with your back against the bed. You pick up one of the comics Carl found earlier, place it in your lap, and start to flip through. Feeling a tap on your shoulder, you look up and ask, “What?”

Carl looks as if he’s struggling to say something; after a moment, he swings his arm lower and links his fingers with yours.

THEME: Ironsworn/Starforged Hacks

This week’s recommendations are all inspired by Ironsworn, by Shawn Tomkin, or Starforged, its science-fantasy successor.

Inspired by PbtA games, Ironsworn stands out because it can be played solo, GM-less, or as a traditional roleplaying game - and the PDF of the rulebook, a work of stellar quality, is free. It uses unique mechanics such as Vows, Momentum, and Supply to support play - Vows being personal goals that drive the character’s story and generate progression, Momentum being an asset that can be used to track your character’s general level level of success, and Supply being a representation of how prepared or energetic your characters are.

While Ironsworn is a game of fantasy adventuring, Starforged takes cues from space fiction and science fantasy, and comes with unique character pieces and a planet generator.

Let’s take a look at some of the hacks created out of these games!

Iron Valley, by M. Kirin.

Iron Valley is a cozy solo ttrpg hack for Ironsworn and Starforged.

In this game you take the role of someone moving into a small community and starting their life anew. Maybe you’ll restore your family’s farm. Maybe you’ll explore the mysterious forest just beyond town. Maybe you’ll fall in love and get married! This is a game about living a cozy life with good company, one day at a time.

As a farming simulation, this is a great example of a cozy game. Follow the course of a year, making a new home for yourself using a simplified version of Ironsworn. Fundamentally, the game revolves around the promises you make to your friends, losing track of time instead of hit points. 

This is a chunky game that takes some set-up, that a single can play over many days or weeks. It’s something that requires a bit of work to put together, but you can pick it up a little bit at a time if you’re looking for sustained play, and you don’t have to work with a group to try and schedule game time.

Stonebound, by S0ra.

The Dawnlands are filled with various groups of palaeolithic humans, all trying their best to survive in this prehistoric world, where they are far from the top of the food chain.

You are not like them.

You will venture forth from your home, rise up and challenge the monstrous creatures who roam this land, discover secrets better left forgotten, protect your people from the feral horrors that rise in the night, bind your will and your word to the sacred stone of this land and become Stonebound.

This isn’t much of a departure from the original Ironsworn: the author describes it as a re-skin, with new assets and foes to make the system fit in a stone-and-sorcery kind of setting. The game is still in development, so changes might continue being added, but the game is Pay What You Want for now! In Stonebound, stone replaces iron as the way by which you make vows, and as a result stone becomes a vital part of the landscape. If you really like the way Ironsworn plays but are interested to see how it looks in a new setting, you might want to check this game out.

Cybersworn, by Homebrewster, and Hyper City, by Thomas Manuel.

You’ll need to know how Ironsworn or Starforged works in order to play these hacks. Cybersworn is meant to fit a number of different flavours of cyberpunk; from high-magic settings, to low-magic settings, to settings with cyborgs or a virtual other space. It provides new pieces to slot into the basic ruleset to make the game neon and gritty. And just like Ironsworn, this game is free!

Hyper City is a specific corporate dystopia that you build based on a real city that you’re interested in. It uses Burning Questions rather than Iron Vows, it provides a mode of play that focuses on investigation and exploration, rather than action and adventure. Hyper City is also designed to be played “solo together,” as described by the designer. Each player is playing their own solo journey, but their characters can interact with each-other via messaging apps or something similar to trade information and give each-other updates. 

These games aren’t designed to necessarily be played together, but since they’re built for the same system, it’s likely easy to steal a little from one to place into the other. If you’re into cyberpunk and building your own city, these might be worth checking out!

Silversworn, by fyret.

This is a hack about being a werewolf (possibly in space). It is a hack about rage and trying your best to hide it. It is a hack about finding what lengths you'll go to keep the beast inside, and what carnage you'll bring when it is unleashed. 

This game specifically alters the rules of Ironsworn to allow you to play as a werewolf character. One of the basic moves, Face Desolation, is replaced by Face Rampage, which is meant to replicate your struggle to keep your human form. Apart from mechanical changes, this hack comes with some tips about playing as a werewolf, especially when you’ve transformed. The game also comes with a new series of Truths and Assets, to help you build the world you want, whether you want to tell a story within the fantasy world of Ironsworn, or the galaxy of Starforged.

You've probably seen this image. I've seen it many times. I have mixed feelings about it.

It's a funny image, and represents a good cause. It's usually posted by people who want to support fairer working conditions for game developers, and want to show support for smaller titles.

It's usually posted in contrast to something like Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs: Legion, The Last of Us: Part II, or God of War: Ragnarok.

There's a part of me that cringes every time I see it, though. I imagine there may be other game developers who feel similarly.

I think the reflexive cringe comes from the phrase "shorter games with worse graphics." People being paid more to work less sounds great, tbh, and barring any sort of production pipeline blocking, I think most devs would be into that.

These are the thoughts that fly through my mind when I hear people say "I want shorter games with worse graphics."

Short compared to what?

Shorter than Elden Ring? Shorter than Hollow Knight? Short like Venba? Short like Celeste? How short could a AAA game be before, even despite posting this phrase, you'd find it unsatisfying or incomplete? How short could an indie game be before you don't consider it a "real game"? Games can be anything from Ulysses to a haiku, but it rarely seems like people are talking about the haiku style of games.

What does "worse graphics" mean?

I just can't imagine a world where "worse graphics" could possibly correlate to Hi-Fi Rush, Undertale, Hollow Knight, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Celeste, Mario Odyssey, Wind Waker, A Short Hike, or Hades. Even though those are the types of games that I often see people use this meme in support of. Those games have incredible art that talented artists worked really really hard on. It feels like a bit of a sting to associate those beautiful games with the term "worse graphics." That phrasing, sadly, implies that photorealism is the bar by which all other games are compared.

Forever Games

Where do replayable games, like roguelikes, tycoons, crafting games, and farming sims land on the realm of "shorter games"? They're not inherently any shorter than a big AAA game, and they're designed to be replayable and to suck your time in. That can be great, but it also might be a treadmill that is not inherently any more honorable than a game trying to tell a linear story.

Are you really "not kidding"?

This meme has a very confident, smug energy and I think that tone invites this question: Do you REALLY want shorter games with worse graphics? I know this is going to depend on the individual lives of each human being who's ever reposted this meme, and it can never be truly answered, but it really begs the question of whether or not people REALLY DO WANT "shorter games with worse graphics." Because let me tell ya, there's a lot of shorter games with worse graphics right now and they ain't selling very well. Check the Steam reviews. Ask devs how many copies they sell on itch. There are many devs out there who make shorter games with worse graphics and no matter how many times people post this phrase, people don't seem to flock over to support those projects. And that sinking feeling of "oh, these folks don't mean the games that my friends and I post regularly on itch, they mean Hi-Fi Rush and Wind Waker" is a little bit demotivating, given the gusto with which this meme is posted. There are people whose whole careers hinge on the hope that there's an audience out there that wants "shorter games with worse graphics" and there doesn't seem to be an actual sea change that's helping those projects out. There is a treasure trove of games out on itch that you can play in between hyped releases, but most people's playing habits don't seem to shift.

Lastly...

...there are thousands of devs out there who work hard, collaborating with other devs and artists, to make their games the best they can be. Devs work hard to bring their artistic vision to God of War: Ragnarok or to Bomb Rush Cyberfunk or to experimental indies with intentionally-ragged art styles. Everyone is putting their heart into their art to make something that will connect with the player. Sometimes, this can be pulled off by 1 or 2 people. Sometimes, this will require hiring more onto the team. It's slightly dissonant to see people say they want to see "worse graphics" when you're trying to get a job in texturing or particle effects and want to deliver something your team is trying to push a boundary on. This is true in both small projects and big projects. Artists are putting their stamp on Horizon Forbidden West just as much as they're putting their stamp on Venba. There are artists looking for work in the indie space who want to make better and more beautiful "graphics."

Anyway, no disrespect to people who post this meme. I understand that it's a show of support and solidarity. I understand that it's just a joke. I know that it's not a big deal.

But I'd be lying if I said that these mixed feelings didn't flash through my mind every time I saw this hedgehog. Figured I would share them.

During a rather warm summer afternoon, Tolkien and Steve were stepping out of Steve's work truck, grabbing a couple boxes of food they had bought at a local farmers market. When they had gotten inside, Steve set the boxes he had grabbed down, opening the back door to check on his yard while Tolkien put away the fruits and vegetables into their fridge. When Steve started closing the back door, he and Tolkien could hear a faint shaking coming from a chicken wire fence. At that moment, both knew exactly what was going on.

"God damnit, another rabbit dug under the fence." Steve, Tolkien's father, sighed in frustration.

"Have you considered putting up the traps we bought like weeks ago?" Tolkien replied to his dad, looking down at the hole dug under their lazily put in fences.

"I'm not totally sure how to do that. Think you can ask Randy's son Stan to help? I'm sure he or his father knows how."

"I don't think Randy would want to help us."

"But his son would."

"Okay okay, I'll go bother Stan." Tolkien playfully rolled his eyes.

20 minutes later, Tolkien was in a more…barnyard attire, walking towards the farm next door to his dad's. After following the short path towards the neighboring farm, he stepped up towards the door and knocked a couple times, double checking to see if Randy's truck was parked outside. After waiting for a couple of seconds, Tolkien watched as the door slowly creaked open, presenting a Stan Marsh in skull pj pants, no top, and messy hair.

"Oh hey Tolkien. What time is it??" Stan groggily asked.

"Hey Stan! it's like 3 in the afternoon." Tolkien laughed a little, showing Stan his phone screen.

"Oh shit I didn't realize how late it was. Well anyways, come in. I'm gonna get dressed, you can do whatever."

Stan closed the door behind Tolkien, running up the stairs to change. When he came back, he was in some baggy jeans, a 'stone temple pilots' band teeshirt, a grunge flannel, and black converse. Of course wearing his iconic beanie, even though the weather didn't call for a winter hat.

"So why'd you come over?" Stan asked Tolkien who was sitting on the couch playing on his phone with a can of Sprite sitting on a coaster designed to match the coffee table.

"A bunch of rabbits have been breaking into our yard and eating our plants or just digging holes everywhere. Me and my dad have no clue how to set up the traps we got, so I was hoping you could help..?"

"Oh for sure!! Me and my dad have been setting those up around our yard too. That's probably why they moved onto your yard."

"Awesome! Thanks!"

Tolkien got up from the couch, putting his phone in his pocket and grabbing the sprite he yoinked from Randy's mini fridge, following Stan outside of the door.

"Okay, so basically you need to prop this piece of the door up after placing the rabbit treats at the end, what's supposed to happen is the traps hood falls down when they touch the food, triggering the…Tolkien, are you listening?" Stan paused his far too specific instructions.

When he looked up, he saw Tolkien staring straight at him, a bright but small smile. The sun was shining down on his face, eyes, and hair. The view was absolutely beautiful and both Stan and Tolkien had a hot red blush on their faces.

"Uhm oh yeah, I'm, I'm listening."

"Tolkien, I don't want to re-explain what I just said.."

"Then don't."

Tolkien then ducked down towards Stan. Both of them staring at each other for a couple of seconds. Tolkien began to lean in before Stan turned away, unassembling the trap.

"Okay then prove you listened."

"Are you teasing me right now?" Tolkien dramatically gasped.

"Hypothetically."

"Stop using big words, Stan."

"Make me."

Tolkien turned to the same angle Stan was facing and began to kiss him. Their lips moving rhythmically with each other. Their kiss had lasted at least a minute before Tolkien broke it to breathe. The two once again smiled at each other, Stan looking way more flustered than he had before. Tolkien, on the other hand, giving a more confident and smirky look.

Panicked and nervous, Stan turned back towards the traps, and began fumbling with it, tripping over his own fingers.

"Okay, stop getting distracted. We need to get this done before my dad gets home and flips his shit because I'm hanging out with you."

"Haha, okay then. Work now kiss later?" Tolkien grinned.

"Of course." Stan smiled with a toothy ah grin towards Tolkien, bumping his thigh onto Tolkien's and getting back to building the traps.

Based on what we've seen in kid maths first appearance ep. I knew we can't just have any villain encounter him. So I made whole set that I think will indirectly help him learn how to be a good superhero. Vari Able and Es Revni are made with the help of ShadowBlazer24 and Mrs. Subtra is designed with the help of @evaiskindaweird

Descriptions for each one is below:

Mrs Subtra- your classic housewife who loves her husband and kids and owns a cleaning business but underneath it all she’s a mob boss who uses her buisiness to make her henchman clean valuable things out of people’s homes and other places like museums.

The Mad Plier- a hobo who wished on a shooting star to get more things with ease like food and money. And when he woke up his hands have turned into giant mutated pliers that can grab things and make more of them. It was what he wanted at first but then he got bored of being well of and began causing chaos like multiplying cars to spread pollution, or multiplying an aggressive dog to attack the whole city or make copies of very popular object so people would fight over it. Divid Den- (they/them) a kid who wants to be a famous influencer so steals their uncles spy gadgets that are kept at Divid’s and their dad’s place for extra containment. Their dad is too busy to pay attention to them so it’s always easy. Their favorite weapons are their one wheeled hover board, laser sword they loves to slice things with and a back pack that pulls out a different gadget/s each episode to keep math kid at bay until the end.(edited)

Sin Tan and Cos- Three small aliens who want to take over the world to impress the other aliens. Their spaceship has a ray that can change the angle of anything basically the shape of anything

X- a very dangerous villain who’s gimmick is they want to play a game: they pick an object that they x mark making it dissapear. Figure out what the object is and find it otherwise a huge x will appear across the entire city making everyone invisible forever. Cards with the letter Y on them will appear to give Kid math a clue as well as making the invisible item reappear again. Are they an entity are they a human or a robot we don’t know but you can’t stop them to stop their game you have to play.

Adilyn- a young witch around her 20s from a far ends of a swamp trying to practice her magic. She ain’t evil in facts she's really nice and a bit shy she just really can’t control her magic and can’t add right yet which causes things to appear in random places that conviently cause disaster

Bella Curvat- A young girl with a strong sense of order and wants to find her place in the family farm. If someone disrupts her like disorganizing her things you may expect her to just reorganize it but no she’ll teach them not to mess with her by ringing her magic bells and summoning beasts from below to come move through the ground to rally the guilty. Think of the episode lessons with lady redundant woman

Vari Able- she works with whoever she chooses, she's not good or evil, sometimes she'll help kid math, sometimes she'll help the villains. Her gimmick is that if she is working with Kid Math, she adds a random variable that helps him beat the villains, and if she is working with the villains, she adds a random variable that works against Kid Math by making it harder to beat the villains. In terms of episode pacing helping Kid Math, it's closer to the end because if she helps him and he can already plausibly beat the villains alone then it would be pretty stacked against the villain. And she helps the villain more towards the beginning to make the episode longer. She chews two different colored pieces of gum, and whichever bubble she blows, that's the side she takes. How to write a pokemon for Pokemon Unite Part 3 - Defenders

Prev: Intro - All-Rounders - Attackers

Defenders are really fun to play with, and I say that particularly because I am a Defender main. I mean, I love Charizard, but he’s an All-Rounder, and some games absolutely require a Defender or else the whole composition falls apart.

That said, Defenders seem to be really unpopular. I don’t know why, but most games I play have people reluctant to fill that green slot, and I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because the pressure of keeping the enemy team off your turf is too much to bear? Maybe they think Defenders are no fun. Or maybe they just don’t know how to play for the team.

Yeah. That’d be it. Let’s give everyone a reality check on what Defenders are really all about.

The whole point of Defenders is to, well, defend. Each one has their own way of achieving this, but the end goal is all the same, to keep enemies off of your goal zone.

Something to keep in mind, a Defender is defined by their ability to take hits well as well as their potential to dole it out. A Defender is much more intimidating if a passing encounter will end in over half of your HP disappearing trying to go for that push. A common theme among Defenders is crowd control and field control, or just controlling the flow of battle in general. With that said, here are a few examples.

With a massive HP stat and huge Attack and Sp.Def, Snorlax is easily a great Defender. In the games, it is typically a roadblock that you have to poke and wake up in order to bypass it. It keeps that same game plan in Pokemon Unite thanks to its moves that keep the enemy at bay. Defenders are allowed a few tricks here and there to expand their defensive playstyle, such as Mamoswine freezing the goal zone, or Trevenent stealing HP. However, the main goal remains the same, so let’s bring up some potential picks for the Defender archetype.

With numbers that are more appropriate for the All-Rounder class, these are some very impressive stats. Of course, the highest one is Defense, and by 6 points over Speed no less. Thankfully, type effectiveness isn’t a thing in Pokemon Unite, yet, so this pokemon will be very effective as a Defender. Now, while that speed stat is slow, so is Greedent, and it is capable of crazy speed with berries as a motivator. Well, this pokemon can achieve the same thing, but can also power up its moves thanks to its ability to fuel itself up with its own special brand of renewable energy. Independent Excursion: Media Reflection

June 8th - Studio Ghibli Museum

For my media reflection, I decided to go to the studio ghibli museum. This worked perfectly for me because I had just watched most of the films prior to coming on this trip, so I was super excited to find out that there was a museum in Tokyo, and I could do my assignment on it. We are so lucky to have Lauren and Eliza. They worked hard at trying to get tickets for everyone, and figured out the website and what to do when it was not looking good and not letting anyone buy tickets. We all headed over to the museum, and was delightfully greeted by the man and myth himself, Totoro. He was working the ticket booth. We gained access to the museum and they gave us a movie ticket that was a film reel of a scene from one of the movies, but unfortunately we were not able to take pictures inside the museum. The whole place was designed like a wonky house, with spiral staircases, bridges, small rooms with minnie doorways. There were lot of different rooms to inspect. One if the bigger areas looked like it would be the workspace of some of the designers of the franchise. With sketches all over the walls and scattered over desks, newspapers, pens, pencils, feather things, lamps, cigarette butts. It felt real, and was very detailed, I was super impressed. There was another room thaw was a little walk through of miniature replicas of some of the main objects or scenes in some of the earlier films.

My favorite room was an interactive display of how film works and other special effects. There was little gear operated sets that you have to crank the handle to get it to work, there was a motion picture display with a bunch of figures molded to be in different points in time that was spun on a wheel really fast so it looks like it’s actually moving. There were these layered pieces that looked 3d because of 2D drawings layered at different points in a box. There was also a film display that had rolls of film being pulled through a processor I’m assuming, and some where highlighted so you could see that when each square goes by fast enough, it looks like a movie. With all these beautiful pieces, and the light hearted music playing, I started to tear up a little because it was so cute and just made me so happy. We took a little break and ate at the cafe, then went back inside to watch the short film they gave us the ticket for. It was a short spin off of the movie My neighbor Totoro. It was the cutest thing ever. We then checked out the gift shop which was absolutely packed so it was hard to see anything. We left and a few of us tried to get these famous Totoro shaped cream puffs from this little shop but once we walked all the way there, we saw the sign that said the cream puffs were sold out. This really brought our mood down because we were looking for it all day, so we just decided to go home after that.

Academic Reflection

Because the museum was highly Totoro themed, I’ll talk about My Neighbor Totoro. The movie, has a realistic set based in Japan. It talks about real life issues and has a lot of aspects representing Japan. To name a few, the main characters house is set in a rice farm town, with the traditional style houses with the wood and paper paneled doors and windows. It also display the main mode of transportation being a bus, and having the working father travel far into town. I would say these are pretty accurate representations of some parts of Japan from what I’ve seen.

We took a trip to a rice farm which consisted of a small town on the outskirts and the rows and rows on farming land, it looked very similar to the movie. The bus transportation is accurate because public transit is very popular here, and the farther away form the busy cities the more scarce the transportation.

As for the clothing, I cannot speak on if it was accurate or not because I believe the movie was set in a different time. The unrealistic parts were definitely the mythical creatures of the forest, and flying bus cats and soot sprites. But who knows, they could be real too and we just dont know it.
