it's really interesting to me how much of the discussion around the use of AI image generation seems to revolve around the idea that there are really only two types of visual art that exist:

art intended for some sort of commercial use

and

2. art that gets made so that the artist can experience the Joys and Wonder of Creative Expressions Of Humanity

the first is one where i think there's some actual concern warranted. i do think it's legitimate to say that a lot of visual artists and photographers have had their work used in a way they couldn't possibly have predicted and had no means of opting out of. i definitely find it questionable to use ai generated images as a commercial product, especially when it's corporate entities doing it. and as always corporations will use whatever new tech they can to cut out human workers. it fucking sucks and warrants talking about but cutting out human artists for AI art use is an extension of the pre-existing phenomenon, not a new thing.

the second one is complete bullshit. would i personally get a lot of value out of Expressing Myself with ai image generation? absolutely not. maybe some people do. but for the most part anyone who values art as an experiential process and is unconcerned with the final product is already Doing That. they don't need a condescending post about the evocative nature of children's scribbling to know that the fidelity of a piece of artwork does not correspond to it's value. you're talking to the wrong fucking people.

the thing i feel like gets left out entirely is the millions of reasons why someone might want A Specific Image to exists that's outside of these two categories. maybe you just want a picture to go on your dnd character sheet but nothing on picrew has the right features. maybe you want a cartoon of your 4 year old daughter dressed as elsa to get printed on her birthday cake. maybe you want to send your coworker a picture of her dog on the rim of an active volcano as part of an ongoing inside joke. maybe you're a writer and want to whip up a quick visual for something as reference to make it easier to describe.

and i really struggle to understand what the material harm is in any of those things. the closest i can approximate is that people who have a problem with ai image generation for personal use seem to feel like either a. people are robbing freelance artists who do commissions of a Potential Sale which i don't think i need to explain why that's bullshit or b. the fact that they can have access to Images without having to Work Hard like I, a Real Artist did means they are committing some sort of karmic slight against me. and there really isn't any way to unpack/legitimize that particular critique that doesn't result in some ableism, as we've clearly seen.

the sneaky guy! i really like him but there's not much i can think of to say about him, except i imagine he's kinda-friends with neema and ed in nikki's hc/au where the original hyena clan comes back. i think he'd be good at dissing people, and them not even knowing :)

possibly my favourite design?? it was unintentional but i made her a little similar to nyeusi which is fun because i imagine they're a duo like shupavu and njano are, especially because they're the fastest skinks. i imagine they're competitive fuckers and keep trying to beat each other in races

Female Skink:

i think i'm going to headcanon her name to be Nyororo, which means "soft" or "smooth", because of her voice! the only thing we know about her lol. i also picked the name because it matches nyeusi and nyata. while making her i started liking the flowery design so i've headcannoned that she'd dress up all flowery-looking to help decieve people into thinking she's sweet, along with her smooth voice. admittedly i was getting kinda sick of green, and i noticed she has a slight blue tint around her eyes, so i gave her a little clip! why not :)

Waza:

i'm actually really happy with this design, or maybe i just like blue lol. i found out that Waza means "mediate" so i'm wondering if he's the mediator of the group in some way. he doesn't talk, but he isn't shown to communicate using his tongue like nyeusi does, so i'm wondering if he literally just shakes his head at others when he dissaproves of what they're doing 😭 he could communicate with head and tail movements, because he's the keenest of sight he would alert the others of what he sees in silence

Male Skink:

i'm going to go ahead and headcannon this guy's name as Hasira, meaning "vex" or "angry" because literally the only notable thing about him is his constant grumpy face. i've also headcannoned him and Waza as friends, and i think Hasira and Waza sounds nice. because of his supposed grumpiness i wonder if he might be one of the older members of the group. like a reluctant adult around a bunch of rowdy teenagers kinda vibe. who knows, he's completely free reign for personality like waza lol

not sure if i'm 100% happy with the designs but that's bc i'm a perfectionist- the picrew didn't have too many colour options but i think everyone looks alright despite that. btw hair was completely random bc i don't fucking know 😭 i hope you liked tho :)

Tips for visualizing what clothes you wore as a divinekin, if applicable

Clothing and presentation has always been important to me as a God, so it's also always bugged me that my "appearance" in terms of clothing never felt right. After all, it's how I presented myself to lower beings! It's important they get the right impression, no?

So here's some tips I brainstormed on how to figure that more out. Could also be used as help for character design, I guess.

General Tips:

Throw away stereotypes. Not every god and angel wears flowy white and gold clothing, and not every demon wears dark reds and black. Go with what feels right to you.

Try to seperate skin and clothing. Maybe your skin has patterns on it or has fluffy bits/fur, and it's not a piece of clothing!

Trust your instinct. Often, your gut is correct when it comes to this type of stuff. If you look at an image and immediately go, "No, that's more something an angel would wear where I come from, so that's probably not at all like what I wore", congrats on the kin memory! But also, it's probably right.

Determine whether looking at external sources will aid you or not. For some people, looking at things like pinterest or picrews may help them visualize or trigger kin memories. However, for some it may give undue influence over what they're already trying to visualize. So, determine if you're more of an internal or external type of person.

Visualize. If you can visualize inside of your head, try meditation. While meditating, imagine yourself as a seperate entity to talk to. Imagine mirrors, imagine your "home." If you can't visualize inside your head, try pinterest, google, or character creators like picrews. Or, if you can, draw!

Consider your domain, if you know it. Fictional example, but, look at the gods of Kid Icarus. Palutena has white and gold flowy clothing, and a large pendant on a necklace resembling a sun. Her colour palette and symbolism make sense as she's the Goddess of Light. Contrasted with Viridi, who wears saturated magenta, red, and purple (much like that of a flower) with a more faded leaf-green. Parts of Viridi's outfit look like they're made out of wood, her shoes resemble leaves, and she has a flower crest on her dress. Naturally, Viridi is the Goddess of Nature. To put a long story short, your domain may have a heavy influence on what your outfit looks like.

Make a distinction between general feelings and specific details. Is that EXACTLY what your top looked like, or do you just have the general idea that you had a bare chest showing? Is your skirt EXACTLY that long and has EXACTLY that many layers, or do you just have the general idea that you wore a long flowy thing as a bottom?

The Senses

Often, the question you're trying to answer is "How did it look?" But if you're having trouble with that, we can turn to the other senses.

How did it feel? This is probably the most important one. What material was it made out of - silk, cotton, wool? Was it soft and smooth, or was it more fluffy and comfortable? Was it heavy, or light?

On the contrast, how DOESN'T it feel? Where do you not feel your clothing? If it was a cold or windy day, which parts of your body would you feel it the most in? This can help with narrowing down the shape of your clothes and where it covers and doesn't cover.

How did it sound, if at all? Is it silent, or do parts of your clothing make noises as you move? Maybe you have jewelry or adornments that clack together or jingle as you walk. If you were to rub against different parts of your clothes, what sound would it make?

Taste and smell are a little weird to talk about when it comes to clothes, but they have their uses. Maybe you're struggling to figure out just what part of your outfit you're imagining or being reminded of. If so, you could take this part and imagine what it tastes or smells like - if it tastes/smells metallic, it's probably jewelry, etc. Smell could also hint at the material, like if it smells naturey, maybe it's made out of leaves and wood.

And lastly, like I said before, trust your gut! Don't take everything in this post as absolute fact that must apply to you - these are just guiding tips to hopefully get you closer along your pathway.

i wish someone would just invent an app like simply plural but where you can easily share it. everyone says use google docs or something else like it where you can't create individual profiles that don't clutter the page. we have a lot of alters and we're getting increasingly frustrated that we can't find anything to list them in a way that isn't overwhelming. our alters also like to visually represent themselves but don't really have anywhere to have like a gallery or anything. we do video visits with our therapist so we can't physically show her our phone. it's so frustrating.

Ah yeah, we feel you there. Our system uses Simply Plural but it can be kind of clunky or difficult to use for our specific purposes sometimes (not knocking the app at all… We love the app and use it all the time, we just agree that there are certain features that it just doesn’t have).

Maybe making some sort of physical journal or binder could help you guys. If you have access to a printer, you could print out little picrews or other images to include, and you could also draw and write in it, too. That way, you could have something to bring to therapy that you could show your therapist without needing your phone for it.

Also maybe consider making a Carrd? Though I think the unpaid version of Carrd has restrictions for the number of pages and images you can include, so that could probably cause some issues.

We know the website Lighthouse doesn’t have an app, and we haven’t personally used it so we can’t speak to its features, but maybe it has some capabilities that might work for you? Could be worth checking out…

playing omori is legit like. a worse version of any yume nikki fangame. the game design is so poor and considering how long it took to even come out, with allegations the creator used the kickstarter money for personal purchases… it’s kind of insane and inexcusable how bad it is. idc how much you like the story if it takes 25 miserable hours to get there!!

EXACTLYYY and honestly playing through it, it felt so... passionless. I think its kind of obvious that omocat only expected to have a few backers instead of the kick-starter blowing up and overfunding her rpgmaker game.

For some comparison:

Undertale : USD$51,124 kickstarter budget, took 2 years to release

Hollow Knight: A$57,000 kickstarter budget, took 3 years to release

Omori: USD$203,300 kickstarter budget, took SEVEN years to release

It was a known fact before omoris release that omocat took the money and spent it on their clothing line and shop (in fact one of the promos for their shop opening was that visitors would get to play a demo for omori, which enraged the kickstarter backers who had been left in radio silence for years and were apparently not even going to be able to play the demo unless they went to the shop, and then the demo was released on a fucking dropbox link.) And for a while a bunch of backers fully believed they had been scammed. Plus one of the funding goals was to make omori available for the 3ds, which not only is impossible for the rpgmaker engine, but also by the time the game released the 3ds was defunct.

And you know, maybe its just because omocat is an artist who didn't really know much about game design. Maybe that's why it got so messy. Sure! It could be that! But even then, by art standards, omori lacks A LOT. only the main characters get to have face portraits despite there being many reocurring relevant characters both in dream and real world, and ALL the main characters have the same head and bangs like they were made on a fucking picrew. The monsters and npc designs were absurdly lacking (like come on look at the sprout moles) and as much they bragged about slime girls composing the ost it was actually pretty damn mediocre. The pixel art too, for the most of the dream world its repeated assets over and over (the forest is SO ugly with all the reused trees) when it's not referencing yume nikki imagery

Also sorry but i have to mention again how hideous the forest areas look with the same trees copypasted everywhere. Like damn dude at least change the colors a little.

Not to mention the gorgeously made pixel part with that mspaint spray effect (its ugly. Im saying its ugly. What the fuck is this dithering.)

And the funny thing is that the (real world) story is actually pretty solid for a horror game. But in order to experience it you have to sit through extremely cringy, annoying and excessive dialogue written by adults who don't really know how kids talk and interact with each other. The dream world segments take up 80% of the game and every single arc in it SUCKS. They're overdragged, uninteresting, unfunny and obnoxious. But haha look if you do this you get a jumpscare! Isn't this game so deep????

And after omori got released it feels like you just can't do creepy cute things anymore without being compared to it. Its tiring 😑 fuck poomori

She recovered quickly, clutching the fiery warmth of redemption to her chest as she skipped up to the storefront door, manufacturing a bright and charming smile over her teeth as she pulled the door open. 

“Krissy~!” she beamed, all bubbles and bright loveliness as her eyes landed on her fianceé cutting stems to size.

Focusing. Analyzing her response. 

Kristen blinked up in confusion for a moment, then flickered a bewildered but melting smile in return as her eyes skimmed over Anna. “..Annie? Aren’t you working right now?”

Anna shook her head, hopping up to the work counter and setting the food down. Unpackaging it. “Nope, lunch break. You got me forrrr-” she stole a glance at her watch, “Eight minutes.”

Kristen bubbled a confused and brilliant laugh - one that would make a girl’s heart melt at any decibel. And did. “You..spent ninety percent of your lunch break in transit across the city?”

“I spent ninety percent of my lunch break getting to see you, that’s what I did~” Anna sealed the compliment with a kiss, pressed and nuzzled in close against Kristen’s cheek, careful to not disturb the makeup-hidden bruise there.

Kristen melted into it, tilting down so Anna could kiss her properly. “..thank you.”

Anna pressed another soft kiss to her lips. “I missed you. So bad, all day. I missed you.”

Kristen melted further at the words, finally turning to face Anna to wrap her in a soft, warm embrace. “..I missed you too. I’m… I’m sorry about before.”

Anna shook her head, thumb brushing up and down Kristen’s scalp. “..don’t wanna worry about it anymore. It’s done and it’s okay. I love you. That’s all that matters.”

Kristen’s breath shifted tenser - Anna didn’t worry. She knew that was just Kristen trying not to cry. Touched. Moved. Feeling safe in Anna’s arms.

As she should. Anna was the safest place in the world for her.

Pulling back with a small sniff and a wipe of her eyes, Anna turned to the food, opening up Kristen’s lo mein and her own orange chicken. “Okay, maybe closer to five minutes.”

Kristen’s laugh lit up the room. It even seemed to pull the wilting flowers into bloom again in the packed and lush flower shop. “Alright - I’ll race you, then~” Playfully, she snatched her lo mein and fumbled to tear open the packaged utensils - chopsticks for her, plastic fork for Anna.

Anna squeaked in her hurry, pulling her own box open. “You’re on!”

It was a rushed, but perfect lunch with a stunning and perfect girl. Her girl. Her wonderful, bubbling, gorgeous girl.

Anna swore that she’d never hurt Kristen again.
