aita for not seeing my gf over the summer?

me (20f) and my gf (20f) started dating last year near the end of our spring college semester. during the school year we both live on campus so it was easy to see each other often. we live like 1hr away from each other so we aren't that far apart. but my parents are really strict and they don't really allow me to go out with my friends often or do many things with them. also i don't have a car and cant drive so i need to rely on them for rides. so before our semester ended last year i tried to explain that i would not be able to see her that often. at that time we were not really official and i also gave her an easy out but she wanted to try and make it work anyways.

we ended up going on a date once last summer. my parents let her pick me up which was surprising to me. but my mom instantly didnt like her bc she is very conservative Christian and my gf had dyed hair and tattoos. my mom also picked up gay vibes from her as well and shes very homophobic and said some deeply upsetting things abt her. i ended up crying and being miserable after the date bc of her reaction. for months after my parents would "warn" me abt her, call her "demonic" and say i should keep my distance from her.

now its been a year and we have been dating longer obviously. i didn't tell her abt my parents reaction to her bc i didn't want to upset her. she also told me her parents (who arent homophobic and know we are dating) want to meet me. i still cant drive. the best idea i have thought of is asking my brother to drive me and then we lie to our parents and say we are doing something together. or i could pretend i have work and take the public transit to see her. which is riskier. im really scared of what my parents will do to me if they find out about that though. my gf seems okay with things like this, she hasnt complained or anything. but if i was in her position idk if i would feel the same. i feel like im using strict parents as an excuse and i should just find a way, otherwise im too immature / not at a point in life to be in a romantic relationship.

anon i am kissing u gently on the forehead here’s some stuff i had in mind:

• first of all i declare these tags as canon:

• i was thinking theyre in an apartment but if house makes more sense to u then godspeed bc its a small town in 80s indiana that ppl think is cursed so i cant imagine property value is super high

• incomprehensible jean-marc explanation i posted at 4 am

• not a headcanon but while i’m at it, @lilshitwayne linked this fic where they move into the creel house by fivecenturiesverse: i finally got around to reading it last night and aaa it’s very cute!! thank u for the link!

• as drawn, no one wears their own clothes lmao. they’re always stealing each other’s shirts, sweatpants, they mostly lose track of whose socks are whose

• half their furniture is just . stuff they found in back alleys & the cheapest shit they could find at a furniture store, plus some hand-me-down things from the (actual) adults. after a few months, though, especially with eddie’s hoarding habits, the place becomes pretty cluttered

• everyone tagging the art as “steddie (kinda)” is correct of course they r pining for each other

• (the first time the kids show up unexpected they ask steve “is that eddie’s shirt????” & he’s just, *sweating* “yes and? it’s comfortable”)

• im thinking robin goes to community college? it’s a bit of a drive but she wants to stay in hawkins (or more specifically: with steve and eddie and the kids)

• steve teaches her to drive over the summer. while he and robin bicker and she almost takes out 4 mailboxes and a stop sign, eddie’s in the backseat also helping (read: adding to the chaos) but he’s a bit less stressed than steve is bc lets be real he does not drive much better than her

• nancy is at emmerson or whatever that college was in canon idk. shes living her best life & calls/visits here and there. i feel like out of all of them she’d want to get out of hawkins the most idk

• uncle wayne has his own place, paid for by either those lab people or the gov or insurance or something — he visits too (and they go to his place for thanksgivings)

• the kids r over all the time of course. steve isn’t even sure how they keep getting in

• for the most part, steve cooks. one time (maybe for steve’s birthday) eddie’s like “hey robs what if we cooked something fancy for him it’ll be a surprise he’ll love it” and it is indeed a surprise when steve comes home from his shift to find a firetruck in the parking lot & the whole building evacuated. when he gets out of the car he spots robin and eddie standing awkwardly to the side of the crowd and when they see him they simultaneously point at each other

• im not actually sure what eddie’s job wld be. still dealing? housewife? tattoo artist? working part time at some store? idk

• the neighbors file a noise complaint bc of eddie’s guitar playing [eddie: “can i smear butter on his doorstep. it’ll be hilarious i promise” steve: “dude he’s like 94 we are not making him break a hip. be reasonable. we’re gonna fill his mailbox with gravel for a month”]

• all the cuddle sessions!! especially angsty ones where one or more of them has a nightmare, quite often the wake-up-screaming kind & they help each other then end up piling up in one bed for the night

• just . the joy of living away from parents for the first time. them realizing they can set their own rules. them realizing no one is stopping them from making pasta at 3 am while high and eating it straight from the pot in a circle on the floor

• especially when it comes to stuff like robin having sensory issues, for example maybe the texture of the bathroom rug bothers her. and when she mentions it steve is just like “aight” and throws it out then & there. and she just has a moment of realizing “oh. no one’s going to yell at me for not liking something. no one’s going to roll their eyes and say i’m being stupid or dramatic.” & tears up a little bit

• eddie has the same issue, to a degree. (i headcanon him as having ADHD bc i love projecting) but they both really like the feel of steve’s sweaters so they steal them a lot & when steve does have a chance to wear one he has to deal w them petting his arms for like 20 mins (and pretends to be annoyed lmao)

• them just learning to b patient with each other for the things they can’t rlly help

• oh and. the jean-marc funeral procession involves eddie reading the plant its funeral rites (the religion changes each time) as robin plays the flute and steve — who needed a lot of convincing to play along — lowers it into a small grave they dug near the property (and keep having to dig up for the next unfortunate jean-marc)

you are like literally the person i want to be with the bird stuff i absolutely LOVE belted kingfishers they are so pretty. they are also one of my favorite birds (i have too many favorites i cant just pick one) but birds are so smart and their feathers are so cool like omg i love birds

im currently a small senior in highschool/sophomore in college and want more people who like birds in my life :))

anyway whats your favorite thing to study about birds? mine is how smart they are but also like how bluejays have the feathers that reflect the sun to show the blue :))

let me preface all of this with saying that while a lot of my experience with birds and learning about birds has been in a classroom setting i've also spent *checks watch* three summers now (including this upcoming one) doing field work working almost exclusively with birds in the midwest united states, so honestly a lot of the things i've learned have been incidental knowledge i've obtained working in the field. i'm not an *expert*, i just have a BS in environmental science and a lot of birding experience.

full slapshod essay rant of me going on about birds (edit: i just reread it and good GOD i went on for a while) of me talking about birds below the cut bc i already know this is gonna be far too long but you asked about my favorite thing in the world so this is on you my friend (affectionate)

i'm definitely ENRAPTURED with how smart birds are. They're so fucking intelligent it's almost scary.

since you brought em up imma talk about bluejays first!! i did part of a project my last year of college on bluejays!!

blue jays will often mimic the calls of other birds, esp predators like red-tailed hawks, with such accuracy that even bird id apps like Merlin (shameless plug) will mistake a mimicking bluejay for a real red-tailed. when i was doing audio surveys for northern bobwhites we had to have a separate training day where the only thing we focused on was how to tell if a mockingbird / thrasher / blue jay was mimicking the distinct bobwhite call and how that wasn't to be counted as a sighting.

(in my experience a lot of it has to do with pitch, repetition, and completion of what's considered the 'full song' of the NOBO, since a lot of mimids won't do the 'full song' and will just handpick bits to weave into the rest of their noises. bluejays especially will do this. mockingbirds will sometimes do the full song, but NOBOs have a pretty measurable repetition gap between their songs, at least in the areas we were doing surveys).

i remembered learning in a class that some bluejays will find bird feeders and spy on them, then mimic red-tailed and red-shouldered hawk calls to get the other birds to scatter, so they can then fly down and eat without having to fight for the tastiest bits.

when i was working with birds over the summer, one of the things we did was setting ground traps for mourning doves so they could be banded and then tracked for hunter take (they're a game species in my state). there were always blue jays in those traps. they're so fascinating to see up close, with their heavy bills and tough little feet and they're so full of rage. and they're loud.

also the thing about their FEATHERS - YES. it fucked me up to learn blue jays are naturally brown. iirc it has to do with the way the barbs on their feathers are put together with modified cells, which scatter the light in a special way to make them appear blue. If you get a bluejay feather in your hand it's only blue at certain angles and the undersides are almost usually completely brown unless you hold them in the light just so.

blue jays are part of the family Corvidae so it makes sense why they're so smart, in the family with other birds like ravens and crows.

well i didn't mean to go on for so long about blue jays. they are wonderful tho aren't they?? <3

my favorite thing to study about birds??? hoooooo boy what a question. everything?? is everything an option??

habitat effects on population size and habitat selection at the individual level is fascinating. i've done a lot of work with population studies, basically doing audio-visual surveys (point counts) of how many of x and y and z target species live in this area at a given point in time, then using that data to extrapolate potential population numbers in an area as narrow as a few square miles and as wide as the whole state (i worked for the state department of natural resources so we were focused only on our state obv).

in that effort, using that information to both directly and indirectly learn what environmental factors affect which bird species and how was so so interesting to me, and some of them are things so small we don't even think about them sometimes!! if there's as few as a handful of pine/cedar/evergreen trees in a field or grassland, you're far more likely to find cedar waxwings and indigo buntings, and you rarely see them in areas dominated by deciduous trees. red-winged blackbirds love wetlands, and while they aren't (iirc) specifically wetland-dependent, something as small as a single pond is enough to attract them in droves.

behavior is also such a cool topic to me, which i've learned more and more about just by birdwatching and attending bird-related conferences and working with wildlife biologists.

birds like the brown creeper are bark foragers that almost exclusively move upwards along a tree. they'll start at the bottom and move up, and once they reach a point they deem 'too high', they'll fly to the bottom of the next tree and move up. conversely, birds like nuthatches, still bark foragers, almost exclusively move down trees in the same way - they'll start at the top, forage downwards, and when they reach the bottom, they'll fly back to the top and do it again.

the yellow-bellied sapsucker (woodpecker family), as the name implies, eats a lot of sap, so they drill holes into a tree, like woodpeckers do, but they lay them down in 'bands' that run horizontally around the tree, often with multiple rows on top of each other, leading to a grid-like pattern of shallow holes only an inch or two apart from each other. that's often the best way to figure out where to look for sapsuckers when you're birding!! (apart from actually seeing or hearing the little guy, obv.)

incidentally, i learned that it's really really hard to put backpack trackers on henslow's sparrows, not bc they're so small and hard to catch, but because they're smart enough to realize there's a thing on their back and will, somehow, pull the backpack around to their front and completely mangle it beyond repair, and that's before they chew it off.

god i could go on forever. kestrels. ospreys. owls. nightjars. songbirds. fisherbirds. albatrosses. puffins. kinglets. sparrows. starlings. they're all so good and perfect and wonderful and fascinating and if i could learn everything about all of them forever i would.

in an extremely roundabout way of answering your question, if you're still reading and haven't run for the hills yet, i can't pick just one thing to call my favorite to learn about birds. everything about them is so interesting and makes me so excited to learn and see and talk about.

YES I WOULD LOVE TO TELL YOU ABOUT MALAYSIAN FOOD!! I would show u pics but um 🧍->🏃‍♂️💨. Ur gonna have to google it king LOL. The first day back my dad and I went out to a mamak stall (basically just a restaurant for malay-chinese-indian food), and I had roti canai (a type of flatbread with curry) and teh tarik, which I have missed dearly. I dont typically like normal english breakfast tea so getting to have authentic teh tarik was SO GOOD. Teh tarik (translating to "pulled tea") is made with condensed milk and gets its name from how after the drink is mixed it gets continuously poured over and over from one container to another until it gets super frothy.

I've also been getting reacquainted with my favourite fruits 🥰 that you cant get in Australia like mangosteen and jambu air (ai-yer). Mangos and dragon fruit you can get in australia but. um. Theyre bad. They just taste like sweet water. Also unfortunately for me rambutan i havent been able to find rambutan 😔😔. Those look similar to lychee but they taste pretty different, less tangy and sweeter.

Ive gone out with a friend to have cendol (c promounced as a "ch") which is a cold desert with coconut milk and rice jelly, along with other toppings should you choose it. Im also in the process of convincing my bff to do a 3h road trip with me specifically for food in a city called Ipoh 😭 wish me luck.

AND, im getting one of my relatives to teach me how to make rendang and char kway teow. The rendang specifically because the one she makes i prefer over what's usually made in restuarants. I think it's a state difference in recipes or smtg? So the ones you'll find in restuarants are KL/Selangor rendang and she makes from Kedah. Thats just a theory tho im not actually sure.

Its so funny you say that about blackberries bc where i live we have them literally growing everywhere on the side of the road AKDNWKDNKWDN in the summer when they start putting out fruit one of my roommates will sometimes go out and just pick a bunch for the whole household, and they always taste SOOOOO much better than the store-bought ones. Im genuinely not sure how to describe the taste of blackberry other than like. Its very sweet but also very tart (i go for the slightly less ripe ones tbh bc i prefer tart things to super sweet) at the same time, and sorta pops in your mouth a little bit when you chew it. Honestly its one of my favorite fruits i would highly recommend them if you can find em anywhere!!!!

My resolution this year is a bit silly but i wanted to go for a very fun easy one, so its to use every sticker i own this year :] ive already started by putting a few on the creeper minifridge that my roomie got me for xmas 😂😂😂😂😂😂 and i have some scrapbook ideas as well to use my fancier ones that my friends have gotten me!!!! Also you are so valid about the writing-- tbh if you wrote more than expected then it sounds like you succeeded instead of failed, so thats awesome!!! :DDD

Steve's first experience with age regression and caregiving was definitely when Dustin regressed after a nightmare (maybe or maybe not involving eddie) and called him dada bc he was very small and scared :((

Steve's unknown protective caregiver mode kicked in and he just went along with it because Dustin obviously needed the comfort and who's Steve to deny it to his little brother in all but blood \(°- °)/

While Steve's first experience with regressing himself, Robin had bought him a gag gift of a winnie the pooh stuffed animal and he was ecstatic about it /pos

Nancy who was jonnys cg at times immediately knew what was going on and helped him when he begged her to open it and she obliged, how could she not?

After Steve went to sleep cuddled up to winnie, Nancy decided to explain what was going on and that's how they found out robin was a regressor too!

sorry this was so delayed btw, i've been pretty drained with lack of sleep & other summer things, not to mention this concept got SUPER long

something about these two events makes me think they happened in like the span of a few weeks maybe? hekdjwodksk idk why??

like ,, steve & dustin had been having a sleepover (rlly less a sleepover more of a "we fell asleep during our movie marathon" moment) when dustin is startled awake in the middle of the night by a nightmare. The Nightmare – the one about that night, after a certain someone ... you know :(

it's particularly scary in this case bc he woke up in the dark on a couch, in a place that wasn't home; even with that nightmare, being at home & able to instantly recognize where he was, able to snatch a comfort item in a blink offered some instant comfort, especially with a rapidly regressing brain. not being at home adds more of a scare, regardless if he actually knows the place (steve's house)

the exact moment he starts whimpering upon getting greeted with darkness (the thing he was in) & then full on crying, unable to properly see exactly where he was, something in steve’s slumber begins to feel wrong. he stirs to hear sniffling coming from where dustin had been sleeping. he's got a knack for knowing in his gut when one of his friends are crying, especially the kids

"dustin?" he mumbles, already getting up to go to him, but dustin kicks off his blankets as best he can to get to him first, but he ends up getting tangled so he can't – no no NO the bats got him he's gonna get EATEN – now crying audibly & reaching out frantically for him. steve, naturally being concerned, is now even more concerned for him, but when he untangles dustin from the mess of blankets & the kid crashes into his arms, sobbing "dada...!" over & over again into his chest, every part of him SCREAMS oh my god, he cannot let him out of his sight for the rest of the night

steve sits there for as long as it takes to calm dustin, rocking the sobbing little guy back & forth in his lap, messing with his curls to ground him until his cries tamper off into simple sniffles & hiccups. he asks, in a gentle (bordering on parental) voice if he wants to talk about it, but when dustin responds with a low whine, steve doesn’t press. instead, he carries him to the kitchen (given dustin refuses to let him go no matter what) & offers him a bottle of water: “don't drink too fast, mkay?”

dustin proceeds to drink too fast even with steve's hand partially keeping it steady, choking a little on the water

“that's exactly why, buddy.”

dustin looks at him – god, the look in his eyes is so innocent. “so’hy dada...”

steve smiles; if had any doubts about what dustin called him before, they're all gone now. he definitely called him dada. “it's alright. just drink a little slower.”

he spends the next hour getting dustin to relax by taking him to his room to playing numerous made-up games (ranging from peek-a-boo to some kind of tickle game he made up on the spot), indulging in junk food, & continuing their movie night (but forgoing any horror movies). dustin gets fussy when he starts getting sleepy, afraid of another nightmare, but steve brings him close to his chest, bounces him on his knee, & plays with his hair – in minutes, dustin's snoozing peacefully on his lap with two fingers lodged in his mouth

as cute as it is, steve can't help but wonder: what was that all about?

come the next morning & dustin is so embarrassed – like more than he's ever been in his entire life. literally the moment he wakes up & notices steve is up as well he's LAUNCHING into this apology, how he didn't mean for any of that to happen, how he knows steve isn't his dad but in the moment with his scrambled & terrified brain it just slipped and he'll never do it again, god he's so weird–

“dustin! dustin, it's fine! i'm not mad or anything, i promise.”

“you're– you're not?”

“no, ’course not, dude. i'm just ... a little confused about what happened last night.”

brief relief washes over him. thank god he's not mad. “okay. okay, cool ... great.”

dustin tells steve about everything that went on that night over some breakfast he made, but dustin is more playing with his food than anything; steve already said he wasn't mad about it, but will that hold up after he tells him about how this isn't his first time feeling small & how it's formally called age regression? will he still like him after it all?

"oh. okay."

"...okay...?"

"yeah. okay. you said it helps you deal with ... what happened, right? that it's a reaction your brain has when things are too much?"

"mhm."

"then why wouldn't it be okay? a lot of shit has happened and after so much of it, your brain kinda..." steve makes this whistling sound as he dives his finger toward the table, then an exploding sound when it hits. "so it's just trying to protect y- dustin? you okay?"

he asks bc dustin is crying over his plate of uneaten breakfast & that cg surge from last night comes back, though not as strong as before. he's ready to hop up from his chair to comfort him, but: "th-thanks, steve. you're- i love you, man."

steve smiles gently & takes his hand in his. "i love you, too. now eat your breakfast, i slaved over that stove for you and my hard work is getting cold!"

for about two weeks, steve & dustin are like even tighter than before with their new dynamic: dustin feels small, he walkies steve, steve comes over, & they take it from there. all is well, really! nothing too out of the norm, but steve learns some things abt this little guy in the process – like how he loves stuffing foreign objects in his MOUTH, dustin you canNOT eat this WATCH

of course, things are relative in the norm – yknow, baby dustin / cg steve – until steve is presented with a winnie the pooh stuffie from robin when he visits her & nancy three weeks after dustin's nightmare, & this sudden yet pleasant fuzzy feeling washes over him the MOMENT he sees the cute little tail sticking out of the wrapping paper. he knows INSTANTLY what the gift is bc he was like, the BIGGEST winnie the pooh fan when he was little (& actually still is 👀), so he doesn't even have to see the whole gift – he just knows

he's so excited he can't even get the wrapping paper off, it keeps slipping thro his butterfingers 😭😭 "nancyyy!! nancy nancy nancy nancy!!! need help!! help help help, p’ease!!", bouncing on the balls of his feet & wiggling like a little worm AUGH ╥﹏╥ nancy is MELTING on the spot as she goes "i got it. bud, give it here." & opens it for him - IMMEDIATELY steve grabs it & tugs nance & robin along to play with his new toy ,, robin is a little bit confused bc ?? what's up with her best friend?? he doesnt usually act like this?? but she never ever judges him – that's not who she is!! in fact she might've played a little harder with him than nancy did 🤭 not that that was a problem, bc nancy was sitting there monitoring the two of them, soft around the edges thinking about how similar little steve is to jonny ˙˚ʚ(´◡`)ɞ˚˙

& when steve starts drifting off to sleep & nancy tucks him (and winnie, ofc <3) into bed, robin's earlier confusion comes back

"hey, nance? uh ... what was that? not that i'm gonna judge or anything like that! i'm just ... a little confused? i've never seen him act like that..."

"oh! it's called age regression. kind of like when the mind reverts to a simpler stage in life for one reason or another. usually it's because of trauma, but other times it's for stress and whatnot."

reverts back to a simpler stage because of trauma or stress... "nancy...?"

"yea, rob?"

"can people .. regress just for fun, too?"

"i'm pretty sure they can."

oh.

is that the fuzzy feelings that comes to her when she passes the care bear stuffies at the store or sees one of their movies at work?

"you're probably really confused on what just happened-"

i am so like. metaphysically exhausted i feel like im going thru so much rn i just need to vent with timestamps

like i have zero money so my card declined on my medical bill today and i have to make a bunch of phone calls to places that are only open on weekdays. and i have to prepare for a market but my heart is just not in it. plus ive been waiting to hear back about some other freelance stuff but it hasnt happened yet. so i just keep working on little bits and praying that it will work out. esp bc i have a tattoo appointment i made for my birthday to keep from totally spiraling but i obviously dont have the money for it right now.

and i have to go talk to bf's parents on monday and convince them that im telling the truth about anything w regards to moving. when they dont respect me and think im just some fairy trying to steal their daughter. and the thing is i am but its obviously for the best. and my parents are excited that im moving back but they cant really help me until july and mostly once we're already over there. and bc of how little money we have were gonna have to get rid of most of our stuff and either fly or drive a car across the country.

and all of this while i am getting sicker and sicker and ive just been getting sicker for years and usually it gets better in the summer but this year it isnt so im really worried about that. all i want is to sit outside in a pretty dress with a fun beverage and draw and write but the reality of my situation keeps creeping in. and its crazy bc the thing is pretty much everything aside from the medical bill is already sorted out and being dealt with and i just have to wait it out. i just cant get over how stressed out i feel and thats whats holding me back from fixing things, leading to them getting worse. they increased my ocd medication but the pharmacy hasnt called me yet even after two days when usually they have it same day.

what is going on. im exhausted. i havent slept properly in like two years. i survive off chocolate chips and microwavables and vitamin supplements. i spend most days alone in my apartment sitting by the window on the computer. this is not living. this is not living. i am supposed to be outside talking to strangers. i am supposed to be making the mistakes of a young adult. i turn 20 in 10 days. i have not been able to stay sober longer than 3 days in a row. i have near-constant short term memory loss. my vision is fading. i cant stand. once a week i go to the park and run until my ribs hurt, which is only about 3 minutes. i wear dresses over my hairy legs and combat boots. i get boba tea and coffee and ice cream when i have 10 dollars in my bank account. why isn't it worth it to live a beautiful life? why is responsibility the beginning and end of my life? when do i get to fuck up without being incessantly punished for the rest of my life?

when i was 17 i came to the startling realization that when something bad happens to me, that is the punishment. before that, and even still, i believed that i had to endure the bad thing and then be punished for the fact that the bad thing even happened. then one day i spilled olive oil all over the kitchen counter and my father helped me clean it up and asked if i was ok. to this day it sticks out as a dream, as if something so kind could ever happen to me. and yet i feel like if i had not been treated with so much hostility, i never would have been radicalized the way i am today. i cant prove either way, but i know that the hostility i am constantly faced with is unwarranted. yet it continues, so what am i doing wrong? the answer is obviously everything.

writing this has calmed me down. i am one of the few who benefits from journaling, even performative journaling, which is what this website is based on. one day when i die just a little bit before my time, my now-bf future-husband will compile my unpublished writing and art and notebooks and tumblr posts into a chronicle of my life, and then i will finally be beautiful.

Ok but for real how did she frost those turkeys that well?? I’m literally a decade older than her and I do be struggling making anything meaningful in my kitchen lmao (and I eat mostly gluten free too so I just KNOW those were not easy to make).
