Adventure Path: Reign of Winter: The Shackled Hut, pg. 84-85

The baby of the bunch among the Heralds, Courage Heart here also has the dubious honor of serving the youngest of the gods we've seen thus far, with Milani becoming a full-powered deity only a century ago with the death of Aroden, for whom she formerly served as a saint. Courage Heart is even younger, being only a few decades old, having perished as a mortal in the upheavals of Galt, only to have her soul rescued by Milani and transformed into a being of divine freedom. She is so young that she still has immediate mortal family, as in brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, parents... but she refuses to ever see them if she can help it, and has cast aside her past name in favor of her divine title so that no connections can be made between her and her family. Not out of shame, or pride, or hatred, but because Galt isn't a very nice place to live, and if anyone ever found out who her mortal family is, that's a weak point that could be exploited.

She still remembers being mortal and will sometimes return in the guise of one to avoid suspicion from fiendish onlookers, taking on the shape and abilities of a Ranger of 4th or higher level, staying only long enough to fulfill whatever mission she saw fit to accomplish before departing, never revealing her divine form or purpose until she's safely back in Elysium. She never stays long enough to form attachments and purposely hardens herself against any attempts to know her, not wishing to put any allies (or potential friends) through the grief of watching a beloved companion vanish without a trace. One must imagine it a terribly lonely existence, but at least she has the benefit of friends she's made in Elysium waiting for her between missions.

Despite her appearance preceding Inner Sea Gods by a full year, Courage Heart really benefits from the two-page spread she's afforded in the book. Compared to the rest of the Heralds who have their stats, art, and lore crammed onto single pages with no room to breathe or stretch, CH has a fully realized lore block, beautiful art, and a statblock that puts an enormous number of other Heralds to shame despite being younger and, thus, much less experienced than any of them. There's a few Heralds who punch above their weight class, and CH is one of them. Let's see just what that looks like...

Almost immediately, one's eyes are drawn to CH's weapon of choice: A +3 Anarchic Morningstar, a weapon a full +1 tougher than any other Herald's. Her attacks are both highly accurate (+29 to the first hit, +14 on the last) and powerful, dealing 1d8+11 damage (+2d6 vs Lawful targets) up to four times a round, or 2d8+11 once via Vital Strike if she can't make a Full-Attack... though if you stay out of her melee range, she may instead decide to swap to her even more intimidating ranged option.

Oh yes, from a distance, her silly little rose may not seem all that impressive as a weapon, but anyone who knows anything about Milani knows just how dangerous a rose can be in the hands of her believers (that link to her article above? scroll down a bit until you read what she does to Wall of Thorns). Indeed, CH's Bloody Rose is not just a token she can hand out, but a shockingly potent weapon: A +1 Anarchic Dart, meaning it deals 1d4+9 damage on a hit (+2d6 vs Lawful) and it can hit up to four times a round, as CH can conjure as many as she wishes as a free action. While seemingly less damaging and less accurate than her melee morningstar at first, she has two to back it up: Point-Blank Shot and Rapid Shot, the first adding +1 to attack and damage rolls vs nearby creatures, and the latter giving her an extra attack if she Full-Attacks with her dart... And ALL of her weapon attacks benefit from her Favored Enemy ability, to which she has +8 vs Lawful Outsiders, +6 vs Evil Outsiders, +4 vs Undead, and +2 vs Humans giving her even more damage than she first appears to have when opposing tyrants and fiends.

Her dart isn't her only ranged option, just the only one that can critically strike: she's also got both Chaos Hammer and Holy Smite at-will to deal a burst of damage to multiple Lawful or Evil targets... but her true power lays not in what she can do on her own, but what she adds to an ongoing rebellion. As servant to the goddess of uprisings, Courage Heart gives hope to the hopeless and bolsters them with the strength to fight back against their oppressors; allied soldiers will feel the most benefit from CH's presence, but even peasants and commoners will feel new strength welling up inside them.

CH's Rebellious Aura quite literally gives hope to the hopeless, granting every ally within 60ft a +4 to saves versus fear effects and a permanent, undispellable Good Hope effect, granting a +2 to every d20 roll and weapon damage roll they make until they're no longer in the aura. In addition, her spell-like abilities benefit others far more than they benefit her, as she can grant Darkvision out despite having it herself, Magic Vestments and Magic Weapon when she already has fully magical equipment, and Protection From Arrows when she's already got the Deflect Arrow feat. All of the mentioned spell-likes can be cast 3/day, and they're not nearly all she can do to aid an ongoing cause; if she can help it, no one will die in her care. She does have Cure Moderate Wounds 3/day, but that pales in comparison to her Martyr's Blood, granting her the power to lower her own Fast Healing 10 by 1 to grant Fast Healing 1 to an ally for an hour, meaning the target regains 600 HP over the course of that hour, one round at a time. There's no limit to how many times she can grant someone her blood, just that she's restricted to only marking 10 targets at a time (lowering her own healing to 0/round for an hour), basically allowing her allies infinite out-of-combat healing. If you can't kill someone under her protection, they'll be back on their feet at full health an hour later.

But a true uprising isn't built on defenses alone, her fellow freedom fighters must be ready to take up arms when needed. Not everyone in her makeshift militia will have proper weapons, but whatever they grab off the ground will serve as a fine weapon thanks to her 3/day Peasant Armaments, a spell unique to Milani followers which allows anyone nearby using an improvised weapon to A) do so without penalty, and B) treat them as their closest equivalent simple weapon. The spell amusingly states that even a butterknife or broken chair leg can be treated as a dagger and a club (respective) while under the effects of this spell, letting a group of peasants fight back against trained soldiers with planks torn from the ground, tree branches, silverware, and furniture. With Magic Vestments and Magic Weapon being handed out, even people in scavenged armor can have a better chance at surviving long enough to escape a tyrant's grasp. Anyone who cannot or will not fight can be shrouded by her 1/day Mass Invisibility to sneak around what cannot be fought.

Also, when I say 'handed out' in regards to her magic, I mean it literally. CH can't be everywhere at once, but she can freely use Imbue With Power to grant anyone she touches the ability to cast one of her 3/day spells, expending one of her uses but allowing the target to cast it themselves at a later time. She can hand out quite the lengthy list: Cure Moderate Wounds, Magic Weapon, Peasant Armaments, Protection From Arrows, Shield Other, and Status! With the power to divide the workload between herself and her allies, it leaves her hands free to go on the offense while other people 'holding' her magic for her can get it to the ones in need, removing any potential for her enemies to try and split her focus. About the only one she might want to keep for herself is Shield Other, as it allows her to take damage meant for a chosen champion, with that damage crashing into her long list of defenses: DR 10/Lawful, and 20 Resistance to Acid, Cold, Electricity, and Fire. With Fast Healing 10 ticking her up each round, she's an excellent Shield Other battery, and even beyond all this she STILL has more tricks!

She can use Tactician to grant all allies within 30ft of her the use of her Outflank, Lookout, and Swap Places feats for 11 rounds, giving them additional DPS, initiative, and maneuverability in a single action. All the while, her allies are benefiting from her long list of buffs, both active and passive. Were it not for the shackles of divine law requiring her to operate in secrecy, there's little doubt in my mind that Courage Heart would actually whip Galt into proper shape in a matter of weeks, if not days... were it not for some factors assuring that her homeland remains in its tumultuous state. But who's to say those factors wouldn't allow CH to shed her disguise and fight at full power? Perhaps, over the course of a specific module, the players see fit to call the Herald of Freedom back to her homeland to finally free it from the parasites that have been ruining it...?

Reader/OC Description: Reader is/mixed with African American with dark curly hair and brown eyes. Body type/shape is not detailed. No Use of Y/N.

Synopsis: Eddie is talked into going to a party for the first time in almost two years, the first time in forever that he’s not going as a dealer, and upon arrival, he finds this is also the first time he stands out for something other than just rockstar style.

This is pretty Eddie focused and doesn't contain too much 'Y/N'. It's written in third person but narrated more from Eddie's POV. Idk if I'm gonna make this into a mini series/ make a part two or just leave it as is. Either way, it comes to a good conclusion.

Preface: Summer of 1986. Eddie is 19, going on 20, and still a high schooler. ‘84 was supposed to be it, one and done, but no. He lived in denial until the day came when all his classmates walked the stage, and he didn’t. He was angry. There is no way this could be happening. Then ‘85 hit. He tried making every deal he could. He’d sell his soul to the devil if it meant he could get out of Hawkins High, but no. ‘86 was going to be his year. This was it, but, again, no. He was left more bruised and scarred than any year prior. One coma later, he was left in a hospital bed with nothing but 2 months of healing and mental degradation.

He was a failure. 1986 was almost over, and here he was in the same position, but worse. He spent the last 6 months of that year locked away in his room, feeling empty. In December of ‘86, Wayne couldn’t take it anymore. He could not and would not allow his nephew to waste away. He would not allow him to give up. He raised him better than that.

With the new year and quite the ‘dad talk’, Eddie decided to make a change. With the help of Wayne and his younger friend Dustin, Eddie’s life course differed for the better. The decision was made that he wouldn’t go back to Hawkins High. Instead, he would start his life as an adult.

He dived into the workforce, working a minimum wage job at a record store. The original thought was to go into a trade, but Dustin, with the backing of Wayne, talked Eddie into continuing his studies and getting his GED. “Maybe the toxic shit environment of high school was never for you.” Dustin would say, and maybe, he was right. Eddie thought he was just one of those who would peak in high school, but in fact, it was just holding him back.

Working in a record store allowed him the necessary time and environment he needed to simultaneously focus on his studies. Reading textbooks was lame, but with soft music playing in the background and the few and far between customers, he could at least focus and actually retain what he learned, for the most part.

He spent many of his shifts over the next 4 months with Dustin and several stack flashcards, and it worked! He had never felt more accomplished in his life. Wayne even went out to a second hand store and found a cap and gown for his boy. With the small group made up of the OG hellfire, a few coworkers, and the old lady who lived a few trailers down and who always brought Wayne and Eddie food when she managed to cook extra portions (always.)

Dustin played the role of announcer, naturally, and, fittingly so, would be the one to hand Eddie the thick certificate paper. Everyone cheered for the young man. Everything was looking up. Finally.

“Come on, man! You have to! It's a celebration!” Eddie shakes his head at his pleading coworker, not sparing him a glance as he continues to search the piles of boxes in the back room.

“Nope.” Eddie replies, popping the ‘p’ in the word.

“Bro.” The taller, dark skinned man starts sternly. “Booze. Good music. LOUD music. Hot chicks. Good vibes. What is there to say no to? Give me one good reason why you can’t go.” He crosses his arms and shifts his weight to one hip.

“Cam. I already gave you my reasoning. I’m not going.” Eddie replies, still rummaging through tapes. “Ah, there you are.” He states, lifting the tape he was searching for out of the box. Eddie starts to head back to the front of house, his coworker following suit.

“I’m not accepting it.-”

“I was actually able to find a copy for you.” Eddie interrupts once reaching his awaiting customer, ignoring his coworker.

The lady looks down at the tape relieved then back up at Eddie with grateful eyes. “You are a lifesaver. I can’t gift my daughter a portable tape player without any tapes,” she laughs slightly. “Thank you so much.” They make their way to the register, all three.

“Not a problem at all.” Eddie replies, ringing her up. “Your daughter has good taste, and I'll do anything to help out a young fellow metal head.” He smiles brightly, taking the money from the lady’s outstretched hand. The pale, redhead rolls her eyes playfully, chuckling.

“Well, I’m not a big fan, but I remember being a rebellious teen once,” she shakes her head, “I figured I may have a better time supporting my daughter, and maybe she’ll stay out of a lot more trouble than I did.” They all share a friendly laugh.

“Well, wish her a happy birthday from us, and hopefully, all goes well.” Eddie smiles nicely. The lady thanks him again, and as soon as the door closes behind her, their original conversation starts back up again.

“Seriously, you can’t possibly be skipping out on me for some movie you are going to see… Alone." Eddie turns towards his coworker with a dramatic scoff, lifting one finger.

"It is not 'some movie'." Eddie states, obnoxiously mocking his coworker's voice with air quotes, "It's Hellraiser. You know I've been waiting for this movie since we saw the trailer for it when we watched Predator for movie night earlier this year."

"Bro. I remember." He started. "I also remember how bad the trailer alone freaked the fuck out of Lex. She was so scared by it that she cringed when you brought it back up on the way out the theater." He shook his head, Eddie chuckling a little at the memory. "Come on, dude-"

"Camden. Listen-" Eddie interrupts.

"No. You, Edward." He grimaces, mockingly. "Listen, you finally got that cert you've worked so hard for. You have a cool job with awesome coworkers." Camden points to himself. "You said it yourself. You are finally happy, ready to finally move forward, and you know what? I think the next step is a girl." He says, raising his dark brows. Eddie rolls his eyes, his body following their direction, turning to walk away from his coworker.

"I don't think so." Eddie calls back, but his coworker doesn't let up, following a few steps behind.

"And why not?!" Eddie turns a corner avoiding his coworker, trying to lose him in the maze of aisles.

"Because!" He throws his hands up.

"Cause what, man? You can’t possibly be chickening out on me, right now.” Cam says, with a smirk. Eddie stops in his tracks, whipping around to point a finger in the taller man’s smug face

“I never chicken out.” Cam smirks, lifting his hands under his arms, flapping his elbows like wings as he bobs his head.

“Ba- ba- bacAWK.” He clucks loudly in Eddie’s face. Eddie rolls his eyes. Cam continues with his chicken impression, getting more and more obnoxious as he closes in on Eddie's face.

“Ooooh my gOD. FINE! Fine!” Eddie yells, raising his hands to push his coworker away. Cam laughs triumphantly, fist pumping the air.

“Ha HAA! Yes!” The taller celebrates, causing another eye roll from Eddie. Eddie turns from his friend and begins to walk away, busying himself with scanning through records, ‘organizing.’ His somber change in attitude, queues up a question. “Come on, man.” Cam starts, genuinely concerned and confused. “What is the big deal? It’s one party. I’ll be there, so will Lex, so will Marcus.” He puts a hand on his friend’s shoulder, finally getting Eddie’s gaze. “You got nothing to worry about. Plus, we’re still young! You gotta at least enjoy some of your time outside of the shop.” He gestures to the store around them. Eddie shakes his head.

“You don’t get it, man. You won’t understand.” He says, walking around Cam, trying to retreat towards the back, but his friend is relentless in his following.

“Well, you gotta help me, man.” He jogs up to cut Eddie off right in front of the door to the back of house. He looks into Eddie’s eyes, trying to convince him to open up. Eddie avoids eye contact but inevitably caves, pushing Cam backward through the swinging door and into the back to ensure privacy. Once in the back, Eddie moves passed Cam and sits on one of few ‘breakroom’ chairs. He sighs and rubs his hands down his face, Cam standing next to him. “What’s up, Ed?”

“It’s just that-... I just-...” Eddie sighs, pausing in search of the right words, “I’m-...” Eddie frowns, a saddened expression painting his features. “Ever since last year, ever since I started over, I just haven’t felt myself?” He pauses, questioning if those words matched, “Or maybe I just haven’t felt the same?.. I don’t know how to describe what it is, but… I just feel… off, like an imposter,... like I can’t be who I once was, you know? ... I really liked who I was, at least I think I do, did?”

Cam sighs, walking over to a stack of folded chairs and picks one up, unfolding it and setting it down next to Eddie, taking a seat. “You know, man? You’ve had a lot of change happen to you recently. I know it’s a touchy subject, and I won’t ever press hard for information you've already set a clear boundary around but just knowing the short version is enough for me to know,” Cam leans forward resting his elbow on his knees, clasping his hands together. “you were stuck, stuck in one place for a long time, so much so that you adapted to it. Life moved on without you for so long, but it’s not going to do that anymore.” He glances over at Eddie who had focused his eyes on the shelving across the room. Cam sighs, “Everything’s changed, so” he pauses, “you feel like you need to change, too.” Eddie looks over at his friend, listening. “You don’t need to completely change who you are,” Cam pokes a finger where Eddie’s heart lays in his chest, “but changing, growing, is just another part of growing up, maturing.” Eddie nods, letting his friend’s words sink in. “You are a great dude, Eds. You’ve grown, and you will continue to grow." Cam places a comforting hand on Eddie’s shoulder, “It’s not a bad thing. You’re still you. I am lucky to know you, all of us are,” he smiles gently, “and I’m sure the person you find to spend the rest of your life with will see what they have and think the same.” Eddie looks down, smiling sheepishly. He nods.

“Thanks, man.”

“I got your back. You’re my brother, man!” Cam boasts, squeezing Eddie’s shoulder a bit. They share a soft laugh.

“Who knew you held such intelligence.” Eddie teased.

“Nah, I just had a good roll.” Cam wiggled his brows and grinned wide, earning an honest laugh from his friend. Eddie stands, Cam following suit. Eddie plops a hand on his coworkers shoulder, gripping it tight and looking him in his eyes.

“You are the best.” Eddie declares proudly, earning a dramatic bow from Cam before they head back out to the floor.

“Boy, I don’t even take this long to get ready!”

“Seriously, dude. Are you takin’ a shit or somethin’? Come on!”

"Eddie! Let's go!" Cam bangs on the bathroom door. Seconds later the door swings open, revealing Eddie. He was dressed in an all black ensemble, a nice button down shirt and a pair of dark black jeans held up by a black leather belt. The only color in his outfit were the dingy white soles of his well loved black converse.

"All right! All right. I'm out!" He yells, holding both hands palms out in defense as he walks passed the trio.

"Ooo, I see you finally listened to me and put something in that hair of yours." A teasing voice called out behind him.

"I'm ignoring you, Lex." Eddie says, as he continues to walk towards the door, grabbing his wallet and old faithful leather jacket from the table at the entrance of the apartment.

"Whaaat, I'm trying to be nice. You look cute." Her warm, deep toned hand reaches to pinch his cheek, but he swats it away the second it comes into contact with his face, gaining a chuckle from the shorter woman.

"Adorable, in fact." Another tease came up.

"Alright, alright. Lex, get in the car. Marcus, don't start shit." Camden interrupts.

"What, I can't get in the car, too?" The tan, curly haired boy responds.

"No, you're waking." Cam shoots at Mark. His mouth drops open as he rolls his eyes, following Lex out the door.

"Ruuuude." Marcus replies, trailing behind a giggling Lex.

Eddie takes one last look at himself in the mirror hanging on the wall in front of him, lost. He even looked different. His hair was longer, bangs grown out. He had a beard growing in, mainly because he couldn't be bothered to shave. It was weird. He looked… healthy, happy even, despite the unsure expression on his face. Since his talk with Camden in the shop yesterday, he couldn't stop analyzing. He rarely ever really looked at himself, let alone really see him, see how he'd changed. Cam was right. He's grown.

A large hand comes down on his back with a smack, snapping Eddie out of his trance with a jump. "You look great, brother." Eddie glances at his friend's reflection. Camden smiles wide, showcasing his perfect, straight teeth, a beautiful contrast to his deep brown skin. The sight of his friend's glowing smile brings a small one to Eddie’s lips. Camden moves behind Eddie, putting both hands on his shoulders. "Let's go knock 'em dead." Eddie nods, accepting his fate, as Cam pushes him out the door.

Just as Cam puts the car in park, Lex and Marcus jump out the backseat, slamming their respective doors shut, and start running to the entrance of the rundown building. "AYO! What did I tell y'all about slamming my goddamn doors! " The eldest yells, halfway out the car. They both throw meaningless 'sorry's behind them back at their driver. He rolls his eyes, he and Eddie closing their doors at the same time. Eddie laughs at the pair's antics. "Dude, not funny! They're gonna break my fucking car one day, and we both know they have about six dollars between the two of them." He glares, but Eddie's grin is unwavering.

The two begin making their way to the old building. Eddie looks up at it, loud music blaring from inside, lights flashing, groups of people huddled outside the building, smoking, drinking, talking, or some combination. Before He can even make it inside the building, Eddie is already getting loads of eyes falling upon him. The rush of getting so much unreadable attention hits him straight in the chest. He starts to unconsciously slow his steps as his chest tightens and it becomes harder to breathe. What the fuck was wrong with him? He used to be able to handle crowds and parties with ease, taking every stare and whisper in pride, but now he's about to go into a full blown panic attack?

"Hey, " Camden stops, turning to Eddie when he notices his friends falling behind, "you alright, bro?" He walks up to him and places a gentle but firm hand on his shoulder. Eddie looks away from the people and the building to stare into his friend's confused and concerned eyes. "Breathe, man." Eddie takes in a deep breath, following Camden's lead, before exhaling it. They repeat this in unison twice more, before Camden pats Eddie's upper arms. "You're gonna be just fine, brother. Like I said, I got you." Camden swings one of his muscular arms over Eddie's shoulders, and they continue walking in together, most eyes leaving Eddie once they see the relaxed yet intimidating form of his friend beside him.

Once inside, Eddie is immediately taken by the sight. The inside of this old building managed to look even bigger despite the sea of dancing bodies. Colorful dancing lights flicker over glistening skin, everyone's tanned and deep skin tones coming together like a painting. He'd never seen anything quite like this. It was almost ethereal. He could feel the positive atmosphere wash over him like a wave over sand. "So," a deep voice starts, yelling over the music, "how you feelin'? You ready to head home?" Eddie whipped his head towards his friend. Cam's face held a knowing smirk. Eddie scoffs, rolling his eyes at his friend.

"I think I'll stay for a bit. Check it out. Give it a chance, you know?" Eddie says, playing coy. It's now Camden's turn to scoff and roll his eyes. Eddie grins mischievously up at his friend. His arm drops from Eddie's shoulders.

"Okay, hot shot. Let's see you walk the walk." He teases, raising a brow and tilting his head toward the crowd. Cam leads the way as Eddie follows behind him.

Mostly everyone in the crowd is way too focused on their dancing, lost in the music, to even notice Eddie and his stark differences, but those who just so happened to open their eyes as he passed through them look at him as if they've seen a ghost, confused and a little weary. Nothing Eddie wasn't used to, but for multiple reasons, it felt different this time. 1) Eddie had never been so unsure of himself, ever. Not even in middle school. Looking back, he may not like what he remembers, but even then, he owned his differences without issue. Now, though, he was not really feeling himself, so these looks seemed to pierce right through him, as if everyone around him could see his vulnerability. 2) These stares he was getting weren't the same, not really. Though he could read unease, it wasn't necessarily judgemental, not for his personal tastes, not for his wild hair, not for his 'reputation.' No, they were cautious for much different reasons, ones he wasn't sure he could fully comprehend.

"There's my favorite, white boy!" Lex, in the middle of a mini clearing she and Marcus made, shouts over the music as she spots Eddie come through the crowd. Eddie grins, running his fingertips down his front, showcasing himself with fake confidence. Lex, as if pulling an invisible rope, gestures for Eddie to get closer to them and complete their friend circle. Eddie shakes his head at her actions with a smile, complying nonetheless. Camden found a dance partner with ease, but Eddie, Lex, and Mark stayed in a trio.

Eddie is, in all honesty, not much of a dancer, never really has been, but that didn't mean he couldn't fake it. He was a musician for God's sake, so he naturally knew how to catch a beat and keep in rhythm. He had to overcome the slight nervousness he still carried, but it didn't take long for the music to take over, especially since Lex was hyping him up. Eventually, his eyes fell closed, and he let go. No cares. No worries. No doubts. He was numb, but free. To Eddie, there was no passage of time. He didn't know how many songs passed, but eventually, an unfamiliar voice brought him back down to earth. "Hey."

Eddie opened his eyes, body still moving to the rhythm of whatever song was playing. It took a second for his eyes to readjust to the brightness of the dancing strobe lights. The first thing he sees is a silhouette, a soft pink light coming from behind the person. He blinked to refocus his sight, looking around and finding he was no longer in his protective friend bubble. His body slowly starts to cease its movements. "Hey!" The voice calls out again, a little louder just to be heard more clearly over the music. Eddie looks back to the person in shock.

"Uh, hi." He replies. The girl standing in front of him was beautiful, to say the least. She had beautiful skin that looked like it had been caressed by the sun. Half of her hair was slicked back into a ponytail, the loose hair boasting its natural curl, big and fluffy, but well defined. Her eyes were lined with black and there were a few gems glued to the tops of her cheekbones, just under her Cleopatra-esq eye lines. The color of her eyes reminded him of the earth's richness, deep and endless. He could have easily gotten lost in them if his eyes didn't continue to wonder. The striking color of her short, strapless party dress brought out the best qualities of her skin tone, and the tights she's wore adorned her legs with detailed lace designs, but the part of her outfit that caught Eddie's eye the most were the black leather boots with yellow stitching on her feet, obviously well-loved. "Nice Docs." He says, pointing at her shoes. When his eyes make their way back to hers, he finds her smiling at him with a spark in her eye.

"Wanna dance?" She asks over the music. Eddie raises his brows at her forwardness.

He blinked a few times, "I, uh, yeah." Her smile brightens as she reaches forward and takes Eddie's hands. He could've sworn he would die on the spot the way this girl was making his heart race.

For the first few seconds, they dance while holding hands, getting into each other's rhythm. Soon thereafter, the girl closes the gap between her and Eddie, guiding his hands to her waist. Eddie wasn't sure if it was showing, but God, was he on fire. He was thankful, for even if it was showing, his newfound partner was quick to close her lovely eyes and get lost in the music. Eddie was trying so hard to keep his mind blank, to stay in that blissful emptiness he'd found, but he couldn't. His eyes were too busy feeding his brain.

He swayed and moved in sync with the girl in front of him, mesmerized by her. She was breathtaking. He wasn't sure she knew how stunning it was to witness her get lost in the moment. He wished he could take this moment and loop it in his brain forever.

At first it seemed like he got what he wanted, because soon enough he was back losing track of time but for a very different reason. He didn't feel numb this time. He felt alive. He felt everything, the blood rushing through his veins, the rapid beating of his heart, the internal push and pull of the air in his lungs. He felt it all, and he burned with desire.

It wasn't lust, at least not completely. He didn't know what, but he knew he desired so much more with this girl. He wanted to know her. He wanted her to know him. He needed to know her. At this point, he was no longer a wall to dance on. They were partners, switching between who would follow and who would lead.

She would sway to one side, and he would follow. He would spin her around and guide her hips to move in sync with his, and she would follow. Their dancing was close and intimate. It erased all thoughts from his brain. His only focus was her.

They danced together for the entire night, not once leaving each other's sight. By now, the crowd had begun to disburse, and the DJ started playing slower, instrumental songs. It became a lot more sensual as the night was dying down.

Eddie couldn't feel his legs. They were aching, and he knew he'd be sore tomorrow, but it didn't matter. His mystery girl had her back pressed into his front, flush against him. His arms were wrapped around her loosely, one hand resting on her hip and the other ghosting the top of her thigh. He wasn't going anywhere, and he'd be damned if he stopped because he was tired.

Her head was leaning back on his shoulder, eyes closed. Eddie's eyes remain open, though half covered with heavy eyelids. The side of his chin and the corner of his lips was against her temple. Each breath he took danced across her forehead.

Even with her back to him, Eddie still found a way to stare at her, taking in every facial feature, the soft curve of her nose bridge that led into a rounded tip, her full, two toned lips. The curls around her neck were damp with sweat and now sticking to her skin. Any time he would think of it, his blood began to run wild at the feeling of her hair against the skin of his now exposed chest. The lights were no longer dancing. They were now on a low, warm setting. Eddie's mind flooded with the idea of laying next to his mystery girl in his room. This is what she would look like illuminated by nothing but the warm, dim light of his bedside table lamp. Maybe they could talk, maybe he'd reread his favorite books to her, maybe they would just lay side by side, and he could admire her beauty while she slept.

His thoughts were cut short by the feeling of her turning around to face him. His hands fell to rest at the small of her back, her hands finding their way to the sides of his neck. He could feel fire where her thumbs caressed his jaw. She pulls him closer so their foreheads rest against one another. "The DJ is trying to kick us out."

He stares at her lips. Her voice cuts through him, like every word she says is for him and him only. "I think he can wait." Eddie replies, this causes the girl to smile. The sight of her warm smile causes a grin to slip onto Eddie's lips. "I don't want to go." He states honestly. She leans back just enough to look him in the eyes. His eyes widened, pleading with her. She pulls his body impossibly closer, their noses nearly touching. Eddie swore he could melt into a puddle on the spot from the wide eyed, innocent look she gave him. He could kiss her.

"What's your name?" She asks, finally, now that the music is no longer deafening.

"Eddie. Eddie Munson." It was a strange feeling every time he had to introduce himself. It happened for the first time with his coworkers. No one in his new circle already knew him by rumors or word of mouth. He could start anew.

"Well, Eddie. Eddie Munson. You are possibly the best dance partner I could've ever asked for." This causes Eddie to smile wide and toothy. "I hope you'll come back around some time." The DJ faces out the music and turns the lights up a little, causing the girl to stop their swaying movements. Eddie would've stayed there in silence, swaying with his mystery girl until the end of time.

She began to lead him to the parking lot, hand in hand. Once completely outside, the lot was less packed than when he and his friends arrived, but there were still plenty of people chatting it up by their cars. He looked out and could see Lex and Cam perched up on the hood of his ride. Lex was staring up at the night sky. Cam was cross armed and people watching.

Once outside, there were a few gazes that would catch him, but then they would go back to talking with their friends. Eddie's full attention was brought back to his girl as he felt her hand slowly slip out of his. He went to grip it, stopping her from slipping away further. He turned to her fully, her doing the same to him. He grabbed her other hand in his, giving her a puppy eyed stare. "Will I see you again?" he asks. She smiles, brightly, her face lighting up. Eddie wouldn't mind if he were to go blind from the glow she was emitting.

"Maybe," she looks down shyly and swings their clasped hands.

"I know this place." He starts, not wanting to let her leave. "My friend Lex showed it to me. Barley's. We should go together sometime. They have the best food." Eddie rambles. The smiling girl nods. "It's on the corner of 112 and 19th Ave. Meet me there tomorrow afternoon?"

"Okay." She beams. Eddie smiles wide. The girl starts to walk backwards and slowly slips out of his hands. "It's a date." She continues to walk backwards a few steps before turning and walking to her car alone. Eddie watches her the entire way, catching her shy glance back at him, until she disappears into her vehicle. A high pitched scream can be heard from behind him, making Eddie jump just before he feels a pat on his back. He turns his head to find Lex jumping up and down clapping and Cam smiling at him.

"My baby has got himself a date!" Lex shouts like a proud mother. Cam laughs.

"Who knew? White boy got game." Cam teases and wiggles his brows. Eddie rolls his eyes, and they all begin waking back to Cam's car.

"Where's Marcus?"

"Passed out, drunk in the back seat." Lex replies, rolling her eyes. She's first to reach the car, getting in quickly to protect her exposed skin from the chilly, night air. Just as Cam opens his door and Eddie reaches for the handle of the passenger door, Cam speaks.

"Soooo," Cam draws out, leaning on the roof of the car, "What's the lucky girl's name?"

Eddie freezes with wide eyes. His hand finds its way to his forehead with a loud smack.

"Your stupid ass didn't ask for her name?!" Lex's voice could be heard coming from inside the car, a bit muffled but still clear as day. Cam shakes his head and chuckles, slipping into the driver's seat.

Eddie groans loudly the entire way into the car, Lex reaching around the seat to hit the back of his head. He slams his door closed behind him and leans forward, smacking his head on the dashboard.

The evidence from this verse (i.e. 24:31, above) that hijab is obligatory for women is as follows:

(a) Allaah commands the believing women to guard their chastity, and the command to guard their chastity also a command to follow all the means of doing that. No rational person would doubt that one of the means of doing so is covering the face, because uncovering it causes people to look at it and enjoy its beauty, and thence to initiate contact. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The eyes commit zina and their zina is by looking…” then he said, “… and the private part confirms that or denies it.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6612; Muslim, 2657.

If covering the face is one of the means of guarding one’s chastity, then it is enjoined, because the means come under the same ruling as the ends.

(b) Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “…and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms) …”. The jayb (pl. juyoob) is the neck opening of a garment and the khimaar (veil) is that with which a woman covers her head. If a woman is commanded to draw her veil over the neck opening of her garment then she is commanded to cover her face, either because that is implied or by analogy. If it is obligatory to cover the throat and chest, then it is more appropriate to cover the face because it is the site of beauty and attraction.

(c) Allaah has forbidden showing all adornment except that which is apparent, which is that which one cannot help showing, such as the outside of one's garment. Hence Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “…except only that which is apparent …” and He did not say, except that which they show of it. Some of the salaf, such as Ibn Mas’ood, al-Hasan, Ibn Sireen and others interpreted the phrase “except only that which is apparent” as meaning the outer garment and clothes, and what shows from beneath the outer garment (i.e., the hem of one’s dress etc.). Then He again forbids showing one’s adornment except to those for whom He makes an exception. This indicates that the second adornment mentioned is something other than the first adornment. The first adornment is the external adornment which appears to everyone and cannot be hidden. The second adornment is the inward adornment (including the face). If it were permissible for this adornment to be seen by everyone, there would be no point to the general wording in the first instance and this exception made in the second.

(d) Allaah grants a concession allowing a woman to show her inward adornments to “old male servants who lack vigour”, i.e. servants who are men who have no desire, and to small children who have not reached the age of desire and have not seen the ‘awrahs of women. This indicates two things:

1 – That showing inward adornments to non-mahrams is not permissible except to these two types of people.

2 – That the reason for this ruling is the fear that men may be tempted by the woman and fall in love with her. Undoubtedly the face is the site of beauty and attraction, so concealing it is obligatory lest men who do feel desire be attracted and tempted by her.

Fatawa: Can Muslim Parents Force Hijab on Daughters?

Sheikh Muhammad Al-Mukhtar Al-Shinqiti, director of the Islamic Center of South Plains, Lubbock, Texas, states: "They [Muslim parents] should try their best to convince her to wear hijab and she should know that she is not to refuse something that has been ordained by Allah in the first place and that was also ordained by her parents, who deserve her obedience." Dr. Muhammad Abu Laylah, professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religions at Al-Azhar University adds: "What those writers say about forcing hijab on Muslim women is a false allegation put forward by some Westerners against Islam and the Muslim woman. The main objective behind such allegation is to encourage the Muslim woman to break the laws of the Muslim family and disobey her parents. It is not a call for liberation or giving Muslim women their rights. Allah Almighty has entrusted parents with their children. Parents bear the responsibility to raise up their children in the Islamic way. If they do that, they will be blessed in this life and in the Hereafter, and if they don't, they will get bad result during their life and in the Hereafter. In Islam, parents are not to force their children to do anything that is considered against the law of the Shari`ah. That is why Islam has ordered parents to take care of their children and to bring them up according to the Islamic manners. Hijab is an obligation from Allah on Muslim women. The obligation is referred to in the Qur'an and the Sunnah. The Muslim woman must wear it and the Muslim parents should encourage their daughters to wear it." Sheikh `Abdul-Majeed Subh, a prominent Azhar scholar, adds: "What those thinkers say about forcing hijab on women is a false allegation. Many Europeans know well that hijab is an obligation from Allah and they are all aware of the fact that when a non-Muslim woman embraces Islam, she must wear hijab. The father, as the guardian of his family, may stress that his daughter should wear hijab in case she refuses to wear it out of disobedience to the obligation of Allah. Here, I would seize the opportunity to give a piece of advice to Muslim parents. Fathers and mothers should note that they are responsible before Allah for the affairs of their daughters that have been entrusted to them; they should raise their daughters according to the Islamic manners. So if a girl is approaching puberty, there is the fear that her not wearing hijab may cause young men to be tempted by her or her by them. Hence in this situation her parent or guardian has to make her wear hijab so as to prevent means that may lead to evil or immorality." He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Your lack of common sense (can be well judged from the fact) that the evidence of two women is equal to one man, that is a proof of the lack of common sense, and you spend some nights (and days) in which you do not offer prayer and in the month of Ramadan (during the days) you do not observe fast, that is a failing in religion.

Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women)." They asked, "Why is it so, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ?" He replied, "You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you." The women asked, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said, "Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?" They replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her religion."

It was the habit of ladies to support each other, so when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came, `Aisha said, "I have not seen any woman suffering as much as the believing women. Look! Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish and put forth [righteousness] for yourselves. And fear Allah and know that you will meet Him. And give good tidings to the believers.

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If a husband calls his wife to his bed (i.e. to have sexual relation) and she refuses and causes him to sleep in anger, the angels will curse her till morning."

Shaykh al-Islam In Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked what a husband should do if his wife refuses him when he asks for intimacy.

He replied:

It is not permissible for her to rebel against him or to withhold herself from him, rather if she refuses him and persists in doing so, he may hit her in a manner that does not cause injury, and she is not entitled to spending or a share of his time lin the case of plural marriage]." Majmoo' al-Fataawa, 32/279.

And he was asked about a man who has a wife who is rebellious and refuses intimacy - does she forfeit the right to maintenance and clothing, and what should she do?

He replied:

She forfeits her right to maintenance and clothing if she does not let him be intimate with her. He has the right to hit her if she persists in being defiant. It is not permissible for her to refuse intimacy if he asks for that, rather she is disobeying Allah and His Messenger (by refusing). In al-Saheeh it says: "If a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, the One Who is in heaven will be angry with her until morning comes."

From Majmoo' al-Fataawa, 32/278. The hadeeth was narrated by Muslim, 1736.

So the wife should be admonished first, and warned against defiance (nushooz) and of the anger of Allah and the curse of the angels. If she does not respond, then the husband should forsake her in her bed, and if she does not respond to that, then he may hit her in a manner that does not cause injury. If none of these steps are effective, then he may stop spending on her maintenance and clothing, and he has the right to divorce her or to allow her to separate from him by khula' in return for some financial settlement, such as giving up the mahr.

Similarly a slave woman does not have the right to refuse her master's requests unless she has a valid excuse. If she does that she is being disobedient and he has the right to discipline her in whatever manner he thinks is appropriate and is allowed in sharee' ah.

A Terminal Lucidity Experience from AIDS-Related Dementia

An eyewitness account from the surviving partner (from Threshold: Terminal Lucidity and the Border of Life and Death by Alexander Batthyány, 2023, pg. 84-85.)

When my boyfriend suffered from (AIDS-related) dementia, our friends were there for him until his behavior became unbearable to many of them. Their visits eventually tapered off. This was a terribly lonely time. The medication no longer worked. His confusion got worse by the day. Then, he went blind. Nothing remained of the erstwhile theatre actor, who held so much promise in the eyes of his teachers - or rather: in the eyes of us all; who had been fabulous on stage, in the role of Cyrano de Bergerac; who always had an open heart for the unconventional and eccentric, for those who despaired of everyday normality. He had become a shadow of his former self; there was nothing remotely evocative of that amazing person. Only his beautiful hands remained, gesturing as he engaged in conversations with his hallucinations. Now he, who had never rejected anyone, had become an outcast. We were terribly lonely. In truth: I was terribly lonely. He, after all, had his imaginary companions. On his last day, however, shortly before he died, he looked me in the eyes. I swear: he was blind, but he somehow found my eyes and looked straight at me. He held my hand and thanked me for remaining with him to the last. Then he asked me to write down who of his friends and siblings should receive which books, as well as various mementos of his performances. He remembered.

He was of course very weak and his speech was slow and his mouth dry. But beyond that he was quite revived, and as generous as ever. We spent some time rehearsing his ideas for his funeral. It was perfectly natural. And yet it was extraordinary - probably the most extraordinary experience of this whole arduous journey to his death. After roughly one or two hours, his powers left him. He had difficulties breathing and he dozed off. I quietly left the room and entered the hospital corridor. Leaving his sickbed was like leaving a magical space for the cold and brutal reality of the hospital.

When I met the ward physician in the corridor and told him that my boyfriend was completely lucid and conscious and looked me in the eyes, he tersely commented that [his] blood values had deteriorated, that I should be prepared for the worst. When I telephoned some of our friends in the evening, I was met with near universal disbelief. I had been blessed, but do you know how lonely it is to be given a gift and having no one who even believes in it? My boyfriend died the next day, from a massive stroke. I was never happier, or more miserable, than those days. I keep this last encounter with my friend in my heart. I still can't speak or write about this without...crying, crying.

かわいい女の子が タイトルロールの 話を描きたかった

——まず、『こばと。』が作られた経 緯をお聞きしたいのですが、『こば と。」はどのような発想で作られた 作品なのでしょうか。

CLAMP かわいい女の子が主役 のタイトルロールの話を作ろうと思 ったんですよね。当時『ツバサ -RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE-』 (以下 『ツバサ』)が、先に行くと暗い展開 になるのがわかっていて(笑)、明 るい話も描きたいなと。 ——では、ラストはハッピーエンド になるのは決まっていたのでしょう か? CLAMP そうですね。ただ、小 鳩の存在があまり明るくないので ･････その辺の展開はシリアスになり ましたけど、ラストを悲惨な終わり 方にはしないでおこうとは思ってい ました。 ———『こばと。』でやりたかったこと、 逆にこれだけはやっちゃいけないと 思っていたことはありますか? CLAMP 掲載誌が男性読者の多 い「ニュータイプ」さんだったんで すけと、そこは許していただいて、 なるべく少女漫画っぽい雰囲気にし

ようと思っていました。 事件事件と 血まなこで追いかけるような話では なく、全体的にゆる~い感じで。 画 面もあまり暗くならないように・・・・・ 髪の毛が黒い子がいっぱいいると画 面が暗くなってしまうので、そこは 気をつけていました。 ——お話もゆるい感じだし(笑)、 画面的にも明るく軽いものを目指し ていたのですね。 CLAMP そうですね、漫画の線 も細くて少女漫画っぽく、カラーも 淡く水彩タッチで······。今までこっ てり塗っていたので(笑)、そんな に塗り重ねないで、筆のタッチが残 ってもいい、はみ出してもいいぐら いの気持ちでやってみようかなと。 ——名前に難しい漢字を使ったり逆 に簡単にしたり、キャラの髪型で短 髪ブームがあったりと、作品を描く ときにそのときそのときでブームが あったとお聞きしていますが、『こ ばと。』ではそういったブームは何 かあったのでしょうか? CLAMP そんなこともありまし たね(笑)。「こばと。」を描いたとき は髪の毛が長い子をすごく描きたか ったんです。 たぶん「ツバサ」のヒ ロインのサクラちゃんが短かった反 動だと思うんですけど。でも、途中

でその大変さに気づき、そのブーム はわりと早く終わってしまいました (笑)。ただ、終わったからといって 髪型を変えるわけにはいかないので、 作画はかわいい帽子とかをかぶせて モチベーションを上げていましたね (笑)。ロングは見てるほうはかわい いと思うし私たちも好きなんですけ ど、いざ描くとなると大変なんだな と身にしみました。 ——髪型を変えようとは思われなか ったんですか? 例えば切ってしま うとか。 CLAMP ちょっと思ったんです けど(笑)、変えてしまうと今まで の既存のCLAMPキャラの誰かに 似てしまう可能性もあるのでやめて おこうということになりました。 ——長い髪は、編んだり結い上げた り、髪型を変えるのも楽しみのひと つかと思うのですが、小鳩は三つ編 みにしたぐらいであまり髪型を変え ませんでしたね。 CLAMP 服が毎回替わっちゃう ので、髪まで変えてしまうと「お前 誰やねん」状態になってしまうかも しれないので(笑)。だから髪型は あまり変えないようにしようという 約束でやっていました。 ——「小鳩は毎日���う服を着る」の

もお約束のひとつだったそうですが、 いろんな服を着せるのは何か意図が あったのでしょうか。 CLAMP 小鳩は普通の人間とは 言いがたい存在だったので、服装も 不思議な力で着替えてる設定なんで すね。そこを読者に提示するために、 まったく着替えないで「この子、何 でいつも同じ服を着ているの?」と 思わせるか、毎回着替えて「荷物は カバンひとつなのに、何で毎回違う 服なんだろう」と思わせるか、どち らかにしようと考えたときに、着た 切り雀だとネタバレし過ぎちゃうだ ろうと(笑)。 —小鳩の服装は、設定の根幹に関 わっていた部分だったんですね。 CLAMP うちはわりと着替える キャラが多いのに、周りが着替えて いて、まったく着替えないキャラが 混ざると若干ネタバレに······ 気が つく人は気がついちゃいますからね。 ——小鳩の帽子も設定に関わってく る部分ですね。帽子は必ずかぶって いないといけない… 毎回春える など、作画上の事が多くて大変 だったことは? CLAMP 作画には先の展開は知 らせずに「朝は心」ということ だけを教えていたんですね。だから、

最初に小嶋が何もない部屋で眠るシ ーンで「帽子を取っちゃダメ?」と は聞かれました。眠るときに帽子を かぶっていたら変ですからね(笑)。 でも、「そのままかぶらせておいて」 と。以後は特に何も言われるような ことはなかったですね。むしろ、帽 子を考えるのが楽しみな部分があっ たかも。

玄琥たちの真の姿は? 天界・地界・異界の裏設定

——『Wish』と同じく天界・地界 が、そして『こばと。』で異界が登場 しましたが、どちらの作品も基本は 人間界が中心で、別世界のことは少 し触れられる程度でした。 これらの 世界の裏設定みたいなものはあるん でしょうか。 CLAMP 一応作ったんですが、 それをやるとあと10巻あっても終わ らないので、もういいかなと(笑)。 基本は小嶋の物語ですし、そういう 不思議な世界があって、不思議な人 たちがいて…….と、曖昧な感じでい いだろうと思ったんですね。「Wish」 なんとなくわかるので、 同じことをやっても仕方ないし、 「Wish」を読んでもらえればいい かなって(笑)。 アニメでは、どち

らも一応原作として併記されてまし たね。 ——いおりょぎの真の姿がかなりカ ッコイイので、彼の活躍する物語が 読みたいという声もあがっておりま すが。 CLAMP 最初の頃は、もこなは いおりょぎたちの真の姿は獣人系だ と思っていたらしいです。大川が「シ ルエットでは、獣っぽい部分を出し てほしい」と言っていたのが原因な んですが。 いおりょぎと水晶ちゃん との恋愛話も一切知らなかったので、 獣人的な人たちが天界ともめて、そ の罰としてぬいぐるみになっている んだと、かなり長い間思っていたみ たいです。あるとき、「シルエット でいいから、後ろからの横顔描いて」 と言ったときに「えっ、人間なんだ」 と驚かれて発覚しました(笑)。 ―—でも、獣っぽいイメージではあ ったんですよね? CLAMP 人間というか、正確に は2段階あるイメージですね。 人間 っぽいのと、獣っぽいのと。 いおり よぎは狼っぽいですね。彼の真の姿 のデザインは、もこなにしては時間 がかかっていました。もともと天界 地界が出てきたのが「Wish」で、 デザインしたのが猫井なんです。 そ

こに、もこながまた新しい世界を加 えるとなると、どうデザインしたら いいか、少しわからなくなってしま ったみたいで。最終的に獣っぽいア イテムをデザインのどこかに取り入 れることで落ち着きました。設定 が できあがった後は、早く描きたか っ たみたいですよ。せっかく作った の に登場が最後の最後になってしま っ て、そこはかわいそうでした(笑)。 ——今回は天界キャラとして、水晶 も新登場しますが、やはりデザイ ン では悩まれたのでしょうか。 CLAMP 水晶の衣装に関しても 自分がデザインしたわけではない世 界観の中に入れるので、やっぱり悩 んでいたみたいです。なんとなく猫 井とお話ししながらやってましたけ ど(笑)。 ———いおりょぎは、五百蔵という真 の名前がありましたが、どちらが先 に決まったんでしょうか。 CLAMP いおりょぎの方が先で すね。これは、大川がつけたんじゃ ないんですよ。もともと猫が 『CLAMPノキセキ」に青いぬいぐ るみの犬が出てくる話を描いていた んです。 大川がそれを気に入ってい て、小橋の相方がほしいと思ったと きに、 いおりょぎを登場させようと

思ったんですね。小鳩は基本ひとり ぼっちですから、相方がいないと画 面的にずっと独り言を呟いているア ヤシイ人になってしまうんですよ (笑)。まあ、 いおりょぎがいても世 間的にはぬいぐるみなので、やっぱ り独り言に見えているんですけど、 小鳩の意識の上ではちゃんと会話を してるという……。 だから、五百祗 という漢字は後で当てました。 天界 と地界にもともと漢字縛りがあった ので、異界も漢字名前でいいだろう と、異界だけカタカナなのも変です からね。 ——後から当てるのは大変だったの では。 CLAMP いろいろ調べました (笑)。でも、いおろぎで変換すると 「五百蔵」で出てくるんですよ。だ から、そんなに苦労はしなかったで すね。 ———玄城は虎という漢字が入ってま すが、そんな彼の仮の姿がくまにな ったのは? CLAMP 玄暁は名前が後だった んです。最初にぬいぐるみのいおり よきを決めたので、対比するために 大きい存在が欲しかったんですよ。 大きいと言ったらなんかもいるん ですけど、お店をやるときに手が使

えないから......(笑)。座ったり立 ったりするときの姿も象だと想像つ かなかったんですね。だからくま。 瑞祥は空を飛ぶキャラクターがいい なと思って鳥さんに。銀生だけは最 後に小さくなるので、落差をつけた くて、幻獣っぽい、カッコイイ系の デザインになってますね。 ――玄琥や瑞祥なども真の姿はあっ たんでしょうか。 CLAMP 玄琥は設定してなかっ たですね。でも、描けたら描く気満々 でした(笑)。結局最後までくまの ままでしたけど・・・。銀生は倒れて いる姿を描いていたので、作画は真 の姿を作っていたかもしれないです。 もしかしたらあのシーンだけだった かもしれませんが(笑)。 ———バームクーヘン屋も大変気にな る存在だったのですが、あそこはど ういった場所にあるんでしょうか。 CLAMP イメージ的には『xxx HOLiC』 に出てくるおでん屋さん みたいな。人間も来るけど、変な生 き物も来る。別の空間みたいなそう でないみたいな・・・・よくわからない 場所、ですね。人間がしょっちゅう 来られる場所ではないのは確かです。 ———バームクーヘン屋にしたのは何 か理由があるんですか?

CLAMP くまってバームクーヘ ン焼いてそうだから(笑)。まず、 くまありきだったんですよ。 プーさ んを連想したので蜂蜜で何かを作ろ うかとも思ったんですけどね。

宮田の出番が増えたのは アニメ化のおかげ

―これまで『X』 や 『東京BABY LON』 ではストーリーを最初から 最後まできっちり決めて描き、 『AN GELIC LAYER』 や 『ツバサ』など では最後を決めて、途中経過は各回 ごとに決めてらっしゃるとのことで したが、『こばと。』はどちらのタイ プだったのでしょうか。 CLAMP ある程度は決まってい ましたね。こういう話だと、金平糖 をどうやって集めるかに焦点を当て て描いていくだろうと期待されると 思うんですが、私たちはそれに関し てはあまり追いかけるつもりはなか ったんです。アニメ版はこの辺きち んと描かれていましたけど、漫画だ とわりとすぐ保育園に焦点が移って ます。ただ1巻ぐらいは設定を説明 する必要もあって、集めているエピ ソードが中心になってます。 この金 平糖集めのエピソードぐらいですか ね、最初の予定から若干の揺らぎが

あったのは。 ——本筋に入っていくタイミングは 決められていたんですか? CLAMP アニメもあったので、 だいたいはアニメがあったから内 容が変わったというわけではないの ですが、あちらのほうが先に最終回 を迎えるのはわかっていたことだっ たので、終わり方のタイミングにつ いてはご相談しました。 実は予定よ りちょっと延びちゃったんですけど、 おおむね予定通りの終わらせ方がで きました。 ——最初のほうのカラーイラストで、 メリー・ポピンズのイメージで描か れたものがありますが、あれは単純 に絵としてのイメージで、メリー・ ポピンズ的な話にしていこうと考え られていたわけではないのでしょう か。 CLAMP そうですね。 メリー・ ポピンズというのは、作画上、どう いうキャラクターなのかわかりやす くする説明です。カバン持って、ち ょっと不思議な感じで・・・・とか。意 味ないのに傘とか持ってますからね (笑)。 ——アニメのOPでは、さらに傘を 持って舞い降りてきてましたね。 CLAMP おそらくなんですけど、

同じ監督に作っていただいたCLA MP インワンダーランド2』 で 小鳩が傘を持って上から降りてくる んですよ。 あれはCLAMPが絵コ ンテを切ったんですが、それをなん となく覚えていらっしゃったんじゃ ないかと。 漫画本編は後期になると 傘なんかほとんど消えてますからね (笑)。カバンも持ち出さなくなって いるし。 そもそも本編にはほとんど 出てないんですよ、傘。 ケーキ屋で ビニール傘を貰って取られちゃった っていう話だけ。イラストで持って いる傘は1回も登場してないんです。 いわゆるイメージ映像ですね(笑)。 ——連載初期にアニメ化が決まって いますが、 アニメからフィードバㇱ クされたことはありますか? CLAMP 私たちとしてはなかっ たんです どうしてもアニメの印 象ってなるので、そういう意味 で読者の中には影響を受けた方もい らしたみたいで、連載が終わってか ら「就が最後に出てこなくて残念 でした」みたいなメールをいただい たり･･････。 実は漫画だとはほと んど登場してないんですよ。登場し て もとばかり会話をしていて、 いおりょぎや小場とは合ってない。 でも、アニメで一緒に歌った印象が

強かったみたいで。 最後に漫画にも 登場して小嶋と絡んで欲しかった。 みたいな感想をいくつかいただきま した。 漫画だと琥珀はそこまで大き い役じゃないんですけどね。 ——沖浦さんの部下に宮田の名前が ついたのはアニメからだとか。 CLAMP あ、そうですね! 漫 画ではついてなかったんですが、横 手さんがつけてくださったので、せ っかくなのでいただきました。台詞 もちょっと増えました(笑)。 ——アニメは漫画より先にエンディ ングを迎えることになるわけですが、 アニメスタッフとはどんな話し合い されましたか? CLAMP それに関してはもう最 初からわかっていたことでもあるの で、よくわからないまま中途半端に 終了してしまうよりは、同じ落ちに なっても構わないので、先にやって くださいと言いました。でも、アニ メのほうで避けてくださったのか、 いおりょぎの詳しい背景などは語ら れずにそのままにしていてくださっ てましたね。 ——漫画では小鳩が記憶を残してい て、藤本が銀生の願いで記憶を取り 戻しましたが、アニメでは逆でした ね。こちらは意図的なものだったん ですか? CLAMP 特に「こうしてくださ い」とお願いはしていませんが、ア ニメ版のストーリーを作るときに一 緒に相談していく中で、ラストをど うしようという話になって、私のほ うから提案させていただいています。 で、監督と横手さんにOKをいただ いて通ったんですね。やはり、でき れば別がいいなという気持ちはあり ました。正直、アニメで先にやられ てしまうと、音がついて演技がつい て、･･････でドラマティック度では向 こうに軍配が上がっちゃうので(笑)。

小鳩のアパートには 隠された設定が!?!?

——『こばと。』には琥珀以外にも CLAMP作品のキャラクターが登 場していますが、リンクをわりと意 識されていたんでしょうか。 CLAMP がっちりとリンクした 作品は『ツバサ』でやっていたので、 『こばと。』はリンクについては逆に さらっとした感じですね。琥珀は世 界観の説明のためにも、出番が多少 多かったんですけど、後はほとんど 通りすがりです。 ——千世、千帆というキャラも出て きますが、ちぃやフレイヤとの関係

は? CLAMP あの子たちは元の話と はまったく関係ないですね。一時考 えていて……今でも少しそのアイデ アは残っているんですけど、「ちょ びっツ』で出たアパートにいろんな 人を住まわせる計画があったんです。 四月一日も別次元ですけどあそこに 住んでいますし、ちょうどいいので 小鳩にも住んでもらいました(笑)。 管理人を誰にしようかすごく悩んだ んですよ。 四月一日とかも考えたん ですけど、できたら女の子の数を増 やしたかったこともあって、じゃあ いっそのこと「ちょびっツ」の管理 人さんでいいじゃないって。せっか くなので、双子も年齢を下げて登場 させました。 ——小鳩の中に天使がもう1人いる という設定は、作画には明かされて なかったそうなんですが、 絵を描く

ときに特別な指示をされたりしまし たか? 例えば歌を歌うときに神々 しく、とか。 CLAMP 天使が・・・・・水晶が登場 するのは本当に最後だけで、それま で小鳩に影響を与えるようなことは なかったので特になかったですね。 ただ、小は歌がとてもうまいとい う設定なんですが、アイドルっぽい 歌はちょっと違うかなとは思ってい て。「Wish』のアニメで賛美歌っ ぽい歌を作ってくださったんですけ ど、そういうイメージでしょうか。 教会で歌われるような感じの……。 こばと。』のアニメでは童謡っぽい 歌でしたね。 ——花見のカラオケで歌ったときも、 賛美歌のような雰囲気の歌だったん でしょうか。 CLAMP そうじゃないと、その 場で周囲がぎょっとするぐらいうま い歌にならないかなと。普通にボッ ブスがうまい場合だとよくあります

し、一瞬周囲が静まりかえるという より、場が盛り上がる感じですよね。 素人が言葉を失うぐらい歌がうまい というなら賛美歌かなと思っていま す。漫画だと音は流れないですし、 好きにご想像していただいていいん ですが。

藤本は問題児、 沖浦は“だめんず”?

——「こばと。』の男性キャラの中で、 先生がお好きなのは誰ですか? CLAMP みんなちょっと(笑)。 というか、みんな甘すぎで頼れない (笑)。藤本はツンデレといえば聞こ えはいいけど問題ありすぎるし、 沖 浦はちょっと･････。 まだヤクザの中 で頑張ってつなぎを取ってくれた宮 田君のほうがマシかな。後は元の姿 とか一切わからないけど、意外と面 倒見のよい玄琥さんとか。 ——堂元君とかはいかがですか? CLAMP 堂元君は、漫画だと本 当にただの端役なので(笑)。お話 の都合上、大人の自由のきく人が欲 しかったんですね。誰かが行方不明 になったときに、子どもだと探しに 行ける範囲が非常に狭いですから。 だから、藤本の同級生で、ある程度 藤本の事情を小暢に話せる堂元を登

場させたんです。そしたらアニメ版 で、完全にライバルになってしまっ て、ものすごくかわいそうなふられ 方をしてました(笑)。その影響が あるのか、漫画だと小鳩ちゃんを好 きだとは言ってないんですけど「堂 元がかわいそうでした」なんて感想 をいただきましたね。漫画の場合は、 確か堂元とは2回しか会ってないん ですよ。おそらく「藤本がツンツン デレデレしてる女の子」「こんな女の 子が好みなんだな」程度にしか思っ てないんじゃないかな。そういう意 味では、漫画版では堂元のキャラは 弱いですね。『こばと。』は小鳩と藤 本の話ですし、そんなところまで掘 り下げてたら、全6巻では終わらな くなってしまう(笑)。そのうえ、 1巻では設定説明と瓶を貰うために 頑張らないといけなかったので、実 質的には5巻なんですよね。その制 約の中で、小鳩と藤本が出会って、 気持ちを育てて・・・・と話を組み立て たときに、ライバルはいらないだろ うと考えたんです。逆にアニメは、 30分24話という長さで、いろんなキ ャラを掘り下げていかないと、盛り 上がらないでしょうね。 ——キャラクターを作るときに、ご 自分の好みが入ったりはしないので

CLAMP 基本、自分の好みでは 作らないですね。話に必要な設定が あって、そこから作っていくような 感じです。本当にかっこよくて何で もできちゃうような男の子が登場し たら、小嶋はそっちに惹かれるだろ うし、いおりょぎもそっちにしてお けって言うでしょうし(笑)、藤本 は欠点のない、誰でも好きになるよ うなキャラではないですからね。 ——藤本のメガネや長いしっぽが特 徴的ですが、あれは大川先生の指定 だったんですか? CLAMP 男の人って髪型変える と特にわかりづらくなっちゃうんで すね。でも、最後に弁護士として出 てくるので、年月が経って大人にな った感じを出したかったんです。 あ る程度髪型を保ちつつ、変化を出し たいとなると、しっぽを長くするし かなくて。 ——将来的に切らせるためのしっぽ だったんですね。 CLAMP 「弁護士になったから 切ったのね」とわからせるためのア イテムですね。メガネは単に好みで す(笑)。 キャラ付けというのもあ りますが 沖浦とか、登場人物全員 メガネにしようかと思った時期もあ

CLAMP とりあえず「ニュータ イプ」さんが大変だったと思います (笑)。締め切りもそうなんですけど、 14枚しかないので話が本当に進まな いんですよ。いくら「ニュータイプ」 のサイズが大きいからって、10コマ も20コマもギチギチにコマ詰めて描 くわけにもいかないし、私たちもそ んな少女漫画は読みたくないですし (笑)。おかげで「ここで終わる」と 言っていた時期から、少し遅れてし

まったんですよね。

——確かに14ページで、しかも引きを 作って……となると大変そうですね。 CLAMP 今までの連載では、い くら短くてもひと月で2枚ぐらいだ ったので、さすがに1枚で引くのは 物理的に無理だろうと思っていまし た。だから引くと言うよりは話を単 純に割って、単行本で見たときに見 苦しくならない形であればいいかな とさすがに「ここでぶっつり切る のは」ってところで切ったりはしな いで、ある程度続きっぽくなるよう にとは意識しましたが。でも、”あ ある程度"ですけどね(笑)。 ——この画集には、『こばと。』のシ ョートショートが描き下ろされてい ますが、成り立ちなど詳しくうかが えますか? 本編後の話、途中の話、 外伝的な話･･････などなど、いろんな パターンが考えられたと思うんです が、小鳩と琥珀の話にされた理由 は? CLAMP やっぱりリクエストが 多かった琥珀と小鳩が一緒に歌うと ころを一回やろうかなと思ったんで すね。舞台はバームクーヘン屋さん で、そこでふたりが会って少しお話 しして……そうすると、銀生とかも 出せます 銀生が小鳩のために神

に願って、その引き替えに小さくな るというエピソードがあったので、 銀生が小嶋と喋るところを見たいと いう人も多かったんですよ。位置づ けとしては、本編のエピローグとい うより、番外編的な、本編が終わっ た後の、いわゆる後日談ですね。 ――最後に、読者へのメッセージを お願いいたします。

CLAMP この巻数のわりに本当 に時間がかかった物語でしたが、最 後まで見てくださってありがとうご ざいます。終わったとき、いちばん たくさん質問されたのが「藤本はい くつか」ということだったんですね 今回の描き下ろし漫画で、はっきり とした数字ではないんですけど、な んとなくわかるかと思います。 漫画 の最終回では、その後に小鳩が藤本 とどうつきあっていったかもわから ないんですけど、そのあたりもちょ っとだけわかります。『こばと。」って、 本編では意外とアマアマな部分はな かったんですよね。『Wish」のふ たりがアマアマしているぐらいで、 肝心の小鳩ちゃんではなくて。なの で、後日談ではアマアマしてる部分 が少し描けてよかったです。私たち も 楽しんで描いているので、見てい ただけたら嬉しいです。

Study of Pages 84 and 85 from Figure Drawing for All it's Worth by Andrew Loomis, Clip Studio Paint Pro

I don't know why, but I had a lot of trouble with this one. Enough that I think I'll include the original for comparison:

I have no idea why I failed to capture the raw Beef™ of fig 1. At least I did finally get the third figure's pose about right; I restarted it pose from scratch twice. It's funny how #4 looks foreshortened, like the camera is placed high up.

I think my studies of pages 80 and 75 were much more accurate.

LOL, I mention needing to play around with the pen pressure settings on my post of pg 75, and clearly I still haven't done that. I also definitely need to start trying out other tools and tool settings. Before I transferred to digital I was using three hardnesses of pencil and two graphite sticks pretty regularly.

In between this and my SketchRef head studies, I've done some perspective exercises, including drawing a bunch of kitchen tools. The quality difference between trying to draw something from my head and from reference is honestly hilarious.

Honestly, I may just keep doing studies from this book and from Drawing the Head and Hands for the next couple months. It's easy for me to get into a groove with this sort of thing, and hard to change direction regularly. Though I know I really should be interspersing studies with more practice at construction, it's a lot harder to muster up the gumption.

Chapter 84

And then we’re fading, straight off the roof, down the three flights of stairs, and up the hallway that gets us to my room. His mouth never leaves mine once.

Chapter 84 summary: All of the kids hang out on the roof for a long time and eventually trickle down to go to bed. There’s a heavy implication that Luca and Flint are going to slide into bed together. But since this is nothing more than a throw-away line, I kind of don’t care. 

Finally, it’s only Grace and Hudson alone up there. They dance for a moment before they start making out. Hudson bites her neck a little. When he asks if it’s too much, she says that it’s not enough. The two of them go downstairs together. 

Chapter 85

At first, I think he’s going to argue, but when I lower my mouth to his, he grins against my lips. And says, “I can totally live with that.”

Chapter 85 summary: They go down to Grace’s room, where things get even steamier. However, instead of banging, Hudson bites her. It’s so pleasurable that Grace ends up having an orgasm from it. After she’s calmed down a little bit, she insists that all of this is only because of the mating bond. Which… come on, babe. Stop kidding yourself. 

Chapter 86

“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m not very good at following rules. Besides, there are lots of other places I want to kiss you.” And then he starts tugging down my sweats.

Chapter 86 summary: They continue to have this weird PG-13 sex stuff, where they’re banging, but the writing is vague enough that I’m not actually sure that clothes have come off at all. I don’t know what’s happening. 

Anyway, I’m pretty sure that Hudson has his own orgasm. After, he’s lying on top of Grace, and she again brings up the fact that she doesn’t know much about him. She also randomly says some stuff she learned about the Library of Alexandria from a TED talk. 

Chapter 87

And though we didn’t technically have sex last night, we did a lot of other stuff.

Does that mean this is a real mating bond or is it another manufactured one like what I had with Jaxon? And do my feelings just ebb and flow along with who I’m mated to? Or do the feelings I have for Hudson have more to do with that three and a half months we spent together than I ever imagined? Does my heart remember something my conscious mind has forgotten?

Considering that she’s already been burned once, it’s kind of hard to blame her for feeling like this. Her second thoughts about Hudson are valid. 

“No, you said it was only the mating bond,” he tells me, sitting up now. As he does, the sheet falls down to his hips and, fight or no fight, there is no missing how beautiful his body is. 

“You agreed!” I tell him. “Your exact words were ‘I can totally live with that’!” 

“I can live with it,” he tells me with a shrug. “You’re the one who seems to be freaking out here.”

Look, when I said that I understood why she was having emotional problems getting attached to Hudson, I didn’t mean that Grace should sabotage her relationship with him. JFC girl, go to goddamned therapy. 

Big feelings, huge feelings that scare me so much that I can barely breathe. Barely think. I loved my parents and they were murdered. I loved Jaxon and he was ripped away from me. If I love Hudson—if I let myself love Hudson—what’s going to happen to me if I lose him?

Again, I’m sorry that her parents were murdered, and that the bloodletter manipulated her and Jaxon. 

This is a girl who is in desperate need of some intense therapy like a year ago, but she’s not getting any. And she’s also letting past hurt dictate her relationships in the future. 

It’s not that I don’t understand where she’s coming from, but she’s pushing Hudson away because of shit out of her control IN A PREVIOUS RELATIONSHIP. 

One, I feel more for Hudson Vega than I ever imagined I would. And two, I can never, ever tell him.

Chapter 87 summary: Grace wakes up the next morning in a chipper mood. However, as she lies there and thinks about the mating bond, she begins to feel this unholy panic. Because her first mating bond was fake, so who’s to say that this one isn’t as well? 

Hudson wakes up, and she decides on cruel, hurtful words rather than to actually talk through her feelings. As I said in previous cards, the entire thing boils down to her fear. She loved her parents and Jaxon, and they were both forced from her life. She’s afraid to get close to Hudson for fear of what his leaving would do to her next. But again, rather than to simply tell him all of this, she lashes out and says hurtful things.

Alright, alright, you all twisted my arm. Quite a few people came into my notes and my inbox expressing their... appreciation for a handsome bird-man in a leather outfit after I talked about his colossal murder mansion. While he’s not necessarily my type (I do like the outfit, mind), I understand. I really do! Unfortunately, while he may be pretty, he’s anything but a perfect partner.

Shax is Demon Lord of Envy, Lies, and Murder, and I bold that last one because Shax isn’t just any old murderer. He doesn’t go around knifing people in the street and leaving them to die, oh no; he’s an artist of agony, a maestro of massacres, a virtuoso of violence, and he’s no longer satisfied with just any old stabbing, it has to be special! Shax gives his victims a five-star murder experience, torturing them physically and/or psychologically for hours before giving them some measure of hope that they may yet escape their situation. Perhaps a bind on their table or bar in their cage is loose, or perhaps he’s left a weapon just close enough to their hand that they can reach it, or some miraculous rescuer comes to their aid... but it’s all an act, a play, and the Blood Marquis sets the stage with himself as both director and audience.

They flee from one cage and fall into another, or the weapon breaks the moment it’s needed most, or the rescuer turns out to be a demon in disguise (or even Shax himself, via Shapechange) that led them to an even more horrifying situation. Shax lives for watching the hope die in his victim’s eyes before he plucks them right from the sockets and eats them, and works to cultivate the most hope possible before he destroys it utterly. If he had his way, he’d make his victims’ suffering last for days or even weeks, but luckily(?) most mortals don’t last more than a day or two under his attentions... not for lack of trying, on his part. He’s always looking to improve his techniques. And besides, even if mortals are too flimsy for his tastes, there’s plenty of blood to spill among the angels.

As the Blood Marquis, Shax is all about blood. He’s a blood FANATIC and a bleed damage enthusiast, fittingly for a torturer, so he prefers drawing things out slowly. To this end, he has a 30ft Aura of Bleeding Wounds that causes ALL piercing and slashing damage done BY anyone TO anyone--friend and foe alike--to inflict 1d6 bleed damage to whoever receives the damage. Unlike most forms of bleed, this bleed stacks with itself up to 10d6, quickly going from a nuisance to a life-threatening DoT if the flow isn’t staunched. Of course, Shax himself is immune to bleed, and he can freely designate anyone in the aura to become immune to its effects... though he typically doesn’t, because every drop of blood is another weapon he can use.

As a swift action, Shax can throw open a toolbox in the form of Command Blood, one of the most potent abilities in his kit. Any creature suffering from even a single point of bleed can be affected by it if they fail the DC 38 Fortitude save, and the effect continues so long as the bleed does. A creature under the effects of Command Blood can be blinded as their own fluids surge into their eyes, drowned as it slips into their nose and mouth, disarmed as it flows over their limbs and coats their held items to make them extra slippery... or turned into autonomous turrets under Shax’s command. Gruesome Tendrils is the final option for Command Blood, ending the bleed on the victim but causing their blood to form into stinging tendrils that automatically inflict 1d6 slashing and 1d6 bleed damage to everything within 5ft of the victim. It’s a meager amount of damage, but Shax can Summon Demons 3/day to conjure an emergency legion for himself, and command his minions to lacerate each other simply so he can create hazardous minefields for the party to move through. Remember that every bit of slashing and piercing damage causes stacking bleed, making even his meager minions dangerous as their claws and the lashing tendrils he forms from them cause mounting damage over time.

Much like the previously reviewed Nocticula, Shax has the combination of Time Stop and Summon Demons, allowing him to go from alone to surrounded by allies he can flank with in a single moment from the party’s perspective. UNLIKE Nocticula, he has far more spells he can use during Time Stop to make fighting him absolute hell: He can conjure a Blade Barrier 3/day to shape the battlefield with dangerous, slicing (and thus bloodletting) blades, and has Mage’s Sword 3/day to autonomously deal 4d6+3 to a target as the mystic blade slashes them over and over again even if they manage to stay out of his reach. He can also summon Spiritual Weapons at will, each one dealing 1d8+5 damage and striking up to four times a round; setting up either of his autonomous weapons during a battle would be a waste of his standard action, but Time Stop potentially allows him to curse the entire party with invincible knives that will be dealing constant damage over time and stacking their bleed ever-higher. He may not even need to draw his own weapons if he feels the party is far too beneath him, letting his minions and summoned blades cut them apart and commanding their blood to kill them for him.

You absolutely do not want him to draw his weapons while you’re adjacent to him. Shax is devastating if he’s allowed to Full-Attack... but significantly less harmful if his enemies manage to stay out of his reach, as dagger specialists typically are. Each of his +5 Unholy Daggers deals 1d4+15 damage, and he has the full tree of Two-Weapon Fighting feats to let him attack at maximum power with both of them if he’s allowed to make a Full-Attack, meaning he can strike upwards to eight times a round! That’’s 8d4+120 (+1d10+10 thanks to Two-Weapon Rend) damage before factoring in the stacking bleed, any potential critical hits, or his terrifying +5d6 Sneak Attack which he will be making full use of at every single available opportunity. If you get blinded by your own blood or caught between Shax and his summoned allies, you’re taking a 20th-level Disintegrate-worth of extra damage on top of being blended by his knives.

Sorry, wait, hold on, I missed something! Hah, silly me! 1d4+15? I meant 1d4+25, because the Marquis’ Frightful Weapon Prowess causes anyone vulnerable to fear effects to take +10 damage from all weapon attacks he makes, ranged or melee. His skill with his blades is so terrifying that simply seeing him work makes his attacks more painful. Immunity to fear prevents this extra damage, as does simply closing your eyes so you don’t see his blades coming, but this obviously opens you to his Sneak Attack even if you’re not being flanked or blinded, so it’s a choice about whether you want to take +10 flat damage that’s potentially multiplied by a critical hit or +5d6 variable damage that isn’t affected by crits. And speaking of crits: if even a single one of the blows so much as threatens a critical hit, his Painful Cuts kicks in, staggering the victim for one round per threat, or 1d4 rounds if the crit is confirmed (which also forces a DC 43 Fortitude save to avoid being hit with Blinding Critical), shielding him from retaliatory Full-Attacks.

Thus: if you’re not somehow immune to Frightful Weapon Prowess and are vulnerable to his Sneak Attack, this brings his max Full-Attack damage to 8d4+1d10+210 + 40d6 + 8d6 bleed (this isn’t even accounting for his weapon’s Unholy ability). Spicy! Too bad moving just 10ft away causes his intimidating damage track to fall like a lead weight. His infinite supply of Thrown Surgical Tools can be tossed up to four times a round for 1d6+10 (and an extra +10 from FWP), but it’s harder for him to use his Sneak Attack from a range and 1d6+10 up to four times pales in comparison to the storm of steel he becomes in melee.

His tools prevent his damage from falling too hard if he’s getting kited around, but if he wants to be especially petty about people ducking his reach, it gives him an excuse to make use of Greater Disarm; if you’re going to be moving away from him anyway he’s going to give you a damn good reason to do so by sending your weapons flying... And if you think that’s giving up too much damage, remember the constant bleed and his attacking Spiritual Weapon and Mage Swords. Depending on how badly he wishes to savor a particular encounter, he may forego using his tools altogether, preferring to disarm his foes and allow his summons to pick them to pieces!

... Ah, yes, his summons, I almost forgot. He can not only summon demons, but if he’s in his realm, Charnelhome, he can use Miracle to bring allies from across the cosmos to his aid if he needs flankers, and he’s encouraged to do so for one specifically gruesome reason: Any party capable of fighting him will likely not be too stressed about whatever he calls, but they serve as... well, a quick snack. Command Blood has a final function that encourages him to use it on his allies as well as enemies, especially allies he considers expendable: If a creature dies while under its effects, their blood slithers towards him unerringly at a rate of 60ft/round, and if it reaches him without being destroyed (even a single point of Fire damage does it) or transmuted into another substance, he automatically absorbs it and gets a Heal spell for his trouble, regenerating 150 HP and shedding a multitude of status ailments.

This ability to Absorb Blood functions even if he’s unable to take any actions himself, the blood slithering of its own accord towards him... and it works on anything he’s used Command Blood on, regardless of size or species. Fun fact: he has a pathetic 1d6+5 bite attack that nonetheless deals slashing damage. Second fun fact: There’s usually innocent civilians in his murder manor he can summon to his side at any time. Call an innocent in, nip them with his beak, command their blood, and the moment they die, he gets mid-battle healing at the cost of a moment of his time. Minions called in by his Miracle (NOT his summon, as summoned creatures and all portions of them disappear if they die) or ones which were simply present when the battle began are also vulnerable to being made into juiceboxes, but he can also grant them a bonus: rather than the lashing tendrils, he can have them get coated in their own blood instead. Since demons tend to use natural weapons instead of manufactured ones, they can reap the benefits of the +10 to checks to avoid being grappled or bound with no downsides! Except, of course, their boss waiting for them to die so he can drink them. He can even knife them himself in the middle of his Full-Attack if he needs it in an emergency! Victims don’t have to die from the bleed, they just have to die while affected by Command Blood, an ability with no per-day or target number restriction and no set duration aside from ‘this ends when the bleed does.’ 

A battle with Shax can be downright frustrating if you haven’t brought some Fire damage with you to eliminate his blood blobs, but at least it’s pretty. Y’know, if you’re into blood being everywhere. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and he understands, though I imagine that for someone so obsessive about his craft it can be just as frustrating for him when a party member’s death doesn’t go as planned (healing magic is RUINING his vision!), or it goes too well and the poor sod who got burst down for 400 damage right when his Time Stop ended didn’t get to enjoy the effort he put into making sure their arterial spray landed in a perfect arc across their teammates’ eyes.

Interpreting Nature through Art

We read in our Unit 4 course work, that “You don’t need to be an artist to share art, and you don’t need to be some sort of aristocrat as well to appreciate art” (Unit 4, ENV3000). I agree with this comment, the making of art and the appreciation of art is a very personal experience and hence I believe that everyone has the ability and right to interpret or create art from any medium and from any subject matter. Who am I to interpret Nature as Art? As we read in our text about Freeman Tilden, one passage resonated with me as I approached this question. He said "If you love the thing you interpret, and love the people who come to enjoy it...you not only have taken the pains to understand it to the limit of your capacity but you also feel its special beauty in the general richness of life’s beauty." (Tildman, 1957 as cited in Beck, L. et al, 2018, p. 83). I love nature, I live in nature and I have the right to interpret it as I choose, through any form of art available to me, and it may speak to others or it may just be a reflection of a thought or an emotion that can bring joy to me.

I enjoy taking photos of new vistas. They remind me of places I have enjoyed and places my family will one day also enjoy.

I also love taking photos of my own yard based on the season. Every season brings fresh beauty, every day, or even minute can bring a fresh light and so photos can capture beauty in a myriad of ways by just changing the angle or capturing the light differently.

The expanded set of interpretive principles, based on Tildan’s work, as set out by Beck and Cable (2011), lay out the Gifts of Interpretation. Two of these speak again to our right as interpreters. One is the “Gift of Beauty:  "Interpretation should instill in people the ability, and the desire, to sense the beauty in their surroundings—to provide spiritual uplift and to encourage resource preservation." (Beck, L. et al, 2018, pg. 85). To interpret nature through art is our right but also can be agreed to be our obligation. As generations before us, we are preserving stories and moments for future generations and sparking interest and perhaps a love of nature. The Gift of Hope, is also important to speak to "The beauty of human integrity commemorated  in  events  of  the  past and the beauty of the intricacies of nature give rise to hope, and these are the tools of the interpreter.” (Beck, L. et al, 2018, pg. 84).

I am a nature love and therefore I am also someone who can interpret nature with my own unique perspective, the same can be said of many.
