~~~~
Cooking is a part of your love language, anything to do with taking good care of your loved ones never tires you out.
Firmly handling a long wooden spoon, you swirled through a bubbling pot of gumbo, nice and slow in the thick stew. The rich meaty mixed vegetables flavor filled the entire kitchen, every breath you'd take in would be a delicious meal as you hummed a jazz tune to yourself.
Even from afar, there was a lovely shine on your slightly sweaty skin casted down from the golden crystal lights fixed to the ceiling. Popping your hips out to every few beats of the boiling pot you continuously stirred. Oh, you couldn't wait to eat right after your husband comes back from his music band, dinner always tasted better with a loved one.
.   .   .
Click.
Right on time, you heard the soft thud of the front door knob opening and a faint scuffle of shoes being taken off. At that familiar sound, a happy tingly feeling rose from your stomach, not just because you were starting to feel a little peckish but you were looking forward to seeing someone...
A pair of muffled footsteps led towards the kitchen and gave you a lovely surprise.
Hearing a low melodic whistle from behind, you instantly smile and throw back a glance over your shoulder. "Oh you're absolutely glowing, my evangeline. Glowing!" Naveen said enthusiastically, leaning his side against the doorway, his sparkling teeth and wide smile never failing to lift the tiredness within you from a good day's work, his princely presence alone cheering your spirits.
Your lips spread into a loving warm smile as a chuckle rose out of you. "Why thank you, Naveen, you're looking more handsome than usual." And goodness gracious he really was, wearing sleek long pants with that favourite white polo shirt of his, the sleeved clumsily rolled up at the elbows and revealing his firm arms crossed over each other. Emphasizing the muscles there, like he was barely containing himself from springing his arms around you.
"Of course, of course. It is both a burden and a treat to be as unbelievably handsome as I am~" He eagerly ran a hand through his luscious hair and kept it behind his head, posing unashamedly for your eyes. Never failing to reel chuckles and laughter out of you, anytime and any day.
“Uh huh, right. It must be so hard for you, baby.”
He nodded in an exaggerating fashion. "It IS very hard to have a beautiful person such as yourself by my side…” His eyes shut as he loudly breathed in the air, pausing dramatically. “Mmmmm, it smells delicious… Absolutely divine." His eyes reopened and stayed on you like a target, hardly sparing a glance to your side where the stew you cooked was. "Why don't we get comfortable and…”
“-And miss out on dinner? Naveen, we best keep our stomachs full before anything else.” You lightly said, a scolding tone as you shook your head for good measure at his teasing expression.
Putting down the wooden spoon on a plate, you heard a deep, almost mischievous chuckle.
"Oh, I know a way to get full…"
As if he couldn't wait any longer, Naveen gleefully leapt and wrapped his strong arms around you, lifting you off your feet with little effort as you yelped being brought out of the kitchen, his grip slightly crushing your breasts and you grumbled when your toes barely grazed the ground.
Like a floating water lily unable to move as easily against rippling water, you felt like you were floating as he carried you onto the dining table.
"Naveen–" Before any protest could come out of your mouth, his lips mashed into yours and sent your body an explosion of tingles to course through.
Not wanting to fall, you had your hands propped behind you on the table surface and continued the harmonic kiss as his warm firm hands fondled the fleshiness of your thighs for his own pleasure. Inching higher and higher towards your hips, massaging gently as his hands dipped underneath the elastics of your underwear and tugged downwards.
Any and all protest disappeared from your mind when a breeze flowed by as your underwear was gone, and you heard a slip of fabric followed by an undone belt falling to the floor.
"I've been looking forward to this meal, princess." His mouth latched to the sensitive nub, with little pressure at first while his fingers rubbed and probed around your vulva in lazy circles to get you worked up. Your legs instinctively wrapped around his shoulders, pulling him closer for better pleasure.
And it was working.
Round and round your labia, working up a slow rhythm that build up a delicious heat in your tightening core, but his chuckles added a cherry on top vibration onto that
It didn't take long with the help of his fingertips, like the skilled musician that he is, played you like a fiddle to spur on your release, your tensed thighs relaxing around his head, an audible sigh of relief letting out from you.
Wow…
"So, how was it, (Name)?"
A slightly sweatier Naveen smirked sweetly up at you, breathing a little heavier, his long tongue running over his glistening wet lips in a smug fashion as if he was savoring your taste and to get a reaction out of you.
You wheezed out an answer with a dazed smile, weakly rolling your eyes at his display, trying to glance down to his handsome face in a pearly sheen from the sweat.
"Very… Very satisfied."
That would be enough for a long while until the next time you'll make love with him.
"Then I'm about to do it again," his happy response was swift like his readied tongue when he dove back down in between your thighs, to your dripping entrance, continuing his expert strokes and rapid flicks on your vulva.
Hardly appearing to be exhausted though you were sure his jaw would've been sore and aching now as his flicking tongue twisted and turned in so many different angles you never knew was possible, worked another explosive orgasm out of you.
 Your curling toes, calves tensed as he never stopped his tired tongue from lapping up your juices.
"Ah. I-I already came," half-mewls kept slipping from your lips. "You can rest," you breathed hard and heavy and called out to the head deep in-between your thighs, your fingers interlaced with his dark locks of hair tugging a little to get his attention. "Naveen!"
"I'll stop once you've begged for more~" Now that isn’t fair, that logic of his never helps you at all and he knows that! What a greedy prince.
"Please, don't give me more," you gasped at his sped up tonguing, like adding firewood to a burning furnace. He kept firing you up.
"Naveen! I won't kiss you today if you don't take a break," you grumbled a warning, sweating like rain, meaning every word you said.
Hearing you, he paused, cool puffs of breath closely fanning over your slit and making you twitch but giving you a chance to take in a proper deep breath.
"Fine by me, princess– I'll just kiss your other lips, they look more lonely." The pounding in your chest intensified as your hands clenched onto the table edge, mentally you weren't prepared for his determination in peppering you in ravenous affection.
His tongue resumed drawing all over your intimates, specially licking up any essence of your obvious arousal glistening under the chandelier lights like a pearl.
"From my glorious time being a frog, I have learned to never underestimate what nature can teach you." He added before lowering his entire face down, your hips involuntarily jolting at feeling the sudden pleasures multiplying the second his lips began to kiss your very clit, no doubt swollen from his previous workings.
Almost making you feel jealous of your own…. Self.
Then came his tongue. Oh gosh, his tongue!
It penetrated your stickiness, lava hot, made you squirm involuntarily on the edge of the dinner table. Twisting and turning inside of you skillfully, inch by inch, scissoring you while his fingers prodded around your labia teasingly like he didn't know what to do.
Pleasurable torture is the only way you could describe it as you breathed in through gritted teeth, eyes barely focusing on the chandelier above, your shaky hand pulling onto a tuff of his hair gently.
Every time you even tried to move away from his tongue, his other hand slipped around your waist and secured you in place while his silken tongue kept dancing along your inner walls, his soft lips brushing against your lower ones.
He was french kissing you in another way, gosh. And you were so weak to him.
Finally, your whole body froze and shuddered as you climaxed, locking Naveen's face against your slick for a few seconds until your limbs slackened.
A quiet gasp for air came from below you before a small burst of laughter came.
Both of you needed a moment to breathe deeply, your face flushed in a light sheen of sweat, which was laughable in comparison to Naveen's overly pleased smirk as he rose to his feet, his chest equally as heaving as yours.
Another comfortable moment passed by.
I… really appreciated it. You didn't have to do this so soon, Naveen…" You caressed his cheek, your thumb gently rubbing his cheekbone, watching the warm dark skin turn shades darker beneath... And your wetness shining around his mouth.
He smiled in full satisfaction and leaned into your touch, his blushing never gets old, you knew he really was a sucker for compliments especially from you. "But I really enjoyed it, thank you, honey."
"Oh believe me, it was my pleasure, darling." Yeah you believed him, a certain hard poke at your thigh from below his waistband reminded you that it's going to be your turn to satisfy him.
"Well, It's about time I give you a reward," you smiled wide teasingly, slowly unbuttoning your shirt underneath the apron, his eyes sparkled, you could almost hear his anticipating excitement, following every inch of exposed skin before your apron blocked him. "But first, dinner. I made some good o' gumbo, and we should eat it while it's piping hot." You said smoothly, pushing yourself off the table and stabilizing on wobbly legs.
Naveen laughed out hard and rubbed his belly, joking. "I think I've already eaten plenty—" Oh the gull on this man.
"—Oh no you don't, fun comes later, I will not let you be with an empty stomach no matter how 'full' you say you are. Now come on, honey." You gently cut him off with reddened cheeks, shaking your head in disapproval at him. "There will be no skipping dinner while I'm here, not on my watch."
He jokingly rolled his eyes when you placed a hand on his hard chest and lightly pushed him for you so you'd be able to get unstuck between him and the dinning table.
Smiling, he let you push him to the side as you sauntered into the kitchen, him naturally following you to provide some help in bringing out the plates and utensils to the table. Teamwork always sped things up.
Using two hand towels to grab the hot handles of the still boiling pot, you heaved it onto a pre-prepared thick cloth on the dining table. Naveen already set up the soup bowls for both you and him, large plates and tall glasses for water. All that's left was to bring out the fluffy rice and dinner would be served at last.
Out of nowhere, your husband nervously blurted out as you were about to sit down. "I love you, my princess, I adore you." His glimmering eyes seemed to stare straight into your soul and captured your love all over again.
You paused mid-way and smiled lovingly, "I'd say the same in a heartbeat if I wasn't starving, but I do too. I love you, Naveen."
And just like that, both you and him leaned in over the dining table and kissed briefly... Which turns into one long smooch, leading to three then the loud rumbling of his stomach interrupted the moment right on cue. He sheepishly grinned, "guess I'd better eat before loving."
"My stomach agrees," you giggled, the powerful smell of the gumbo stew making your mouth salivate, and you weren't the only one, looking at Naveen eyeing the soup across from you.
Dinner that evening was a lovely overflow of laughter, praises, conversations and much later a lot of fun loving.
The Griffin Cake 🎂 🕷️ 🐦 💕
(A birthday fic for My Wittewife Clara Clawthorne because today is her b-day and also because)
Tumblr media
"Can I take off my blindfold now?" Clara giggled to her little birdie who was seated on top of her shoulder as she led her cute owner towards her cottage.
The witch received a 'not yet' from the blue jay in bird.
Earlier today, Syrup, her palisman, had tweeted to Clara about a surprise, and Clara was eager to find out what it was.
Being that today was her birthday, it could be anything.
When Clara opens her front door, the lights inside turn on instantly.
"Happy birthday!" Her friends and family cheer as a big party banner with the message, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CLARA!" drops from the ceiling.
Taking off her blindfold, Clara's light green eyes caught sight of her visitors.
"For me?" She asked, genuinely surpised.
The smile on her face grew. "Aww, thank you so much, everyone!"
Syrup took off to her bird perch to be with Flapjack while Caleb, who stood at the front, wrapped his arms around his wife.
"Happy birthday, my love!" He greeted the guest of honor with the warmest of hugs as he lifted her up and spun her around.
Once she was set down, she gave him a knowing smile, crossing her arms.
"Let me guess, you were the one in charge of organizing this party together, weren't you?"
Caleb nods.
Clara sighs, setting her arms down. "Of course you were." The man responsible for the festivities receives a gentle kiss on his cheek.
"I even managed to persuade Philip to come and he hates parties," Caleb explained as he gestured his arm towards the corner where his brother was at.
The brunette stood alone wearing a party hat and a bored expression, his arms crossed and his foot against the wall, almost as if he were too good to be there.
When he spots Clara waving at him with a smile, he let's out a 'hmph!', promptly looking away. He held his nose high in the air. He didn't care if it was that dumb witch's birthday or whatever, he refused to give her the time of day.
Clara rolled her eyes at this tsundere-ish behavior, her smile still shining on her face.
"Come on!" Caleb happily takes Clara's hand, guiding his beloved to the kitchen.
"I have something for you in the kitchen that I know you'll love!"
...
With everyone in the kitchen, Caleb brought out a birthday treat in the shape of a griffin and set it before Clara on the table.
The witch emits a small gasp, her emerald eyes sparkling in absolute delight at the dish.
Caleb places a hand on the back of his head.
"Now, I'm not the best baker in the world," he admits with a nervous smile, "But I tried."
Although the griffin cake looked lumpy and had a slightly off break, Clara didn't care and ignored the imperfections.
Caleb's cake was clearly put together with a lot of thought and care, which is what counts.
"Caleb, this cake is so cute! I love it!" Clara told him. "You even gave the griffin a little party hat!"
Adorable addition.
"That's not all I gave it," he chuckles, handing her a knife. "Look inside," he whispers with a wink.
As Clara begins to cut the cake, hundreds of small spiders start to pour out.
When some of the spiders start to engulf the couple's face, they share a wide smile.
"Oh, Caleb."
Clara gave him a loving hug.
He returns the affection.
"You've made this the best birthday ever! Thank you."
Illuminate Your Space with RGB Strip Strips: A Colorful Revolution in Home Decor
RGB strip lights have taken center stage among the different lighting alternatives available, altering the way we brighten and enrich our living environments. These adaptable and bright lighting solutions have piqued the interest of homeowners and designers alike, providing a dazzling variety of hues to create engaging atmospheres and personalized ambiances.
Countless Color Options The capacity of RGB strip lights to create a wide range of colors is one of its most appealing features. With red, green, and blue LEDs incorporated into a single strip, you may create a practically limitless palette of hues by mixing and matching these main colors. RGB strip lights allow you to easily create the right lighting scheme for any event or mood, whether you want a relaxing blue atmosphere, a romantic pink glow, or a dramatic multicolored display.
Tumblr media
Application Flexibility Smart RGB LED strip provides remarkable adaptability, from highlighting architectural details to changing the ambiance of a place. These flexible strips are readily cut to size and affixed to a variety of surfaces, allowing you to illuminate huge regions as well as complex locations. RGB strip lights provide a seamless and beautiful lighting solution for every nook and crevice of your house, whether you want to define the curves of your ceiling, highlight a bookcase, or provide a soft glow to your kitchen cupboards.
Mood Enhancement Lighting has a well-documented influence on our emotions and well-being, and RGB strip lights excel at producing various moods and atmospheres. Aside from typical white lighting, the ability to modify colors and intensities is a fantastic tool for creating the ideal mood. Deep oranges and light yellows provide a nice and welcoming ambiance for a movie night.
Intelligent Integration RGB strip lights may now be smoothly incorporated into your existing smart environment thanks to the advancement of smart home technologies. You can easily modify colors, and brightness, and even create dynamic lighting effects with a simple command or tap on your smartphone when using compatible controllers or voice assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
Energy Efficiency Philips hue strip light provides energy-efficient lighting options in addition to their visual appeal. LEDs use substantially less energy than standard incandescent lights while creating brighter and more vivid light. This energy efficiency not only decreases your ecological footprint but also saves you money on your utility costs over time.
2023
This year I visited 178 exhibitions, here is my top ten.
Tumblr media
Vermeer, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
Perhaps not just an exhibition of the year, but one of a lifetime. Astonishing perfection in every brush stroke; words and reproductions do not capture the empathy contained in every painting that survives by Vermeer. Most of which were brought together at the Rijksmuseum for a truly exceptional exhibition. Unlike so many blockbusters of this type, the paintings did not feel (well ok too crushingly) crowded or overwhelmed by the throngs. Each was given space and a carefully considered semi-circular barrier so visitors could fan out from it. There was little in the way of text panels, no need to contextualise with artworks by other artists; the paintings were each given lots of space in sensitively and richly painted and floor-to-ceiling curtains. They were allowed a dignified space in order to sing to us. I contracted Covid-19 from the trip to Amsterdam which developed into Long-Covid; this left me changed fundamentally as a human as I battle(d) fatigue for months on end. I am still not sure if the impact on my health was worth the trip, but as I write these words I know it was. I will always remember the opportunity to see 28 of the 37 Vermeer’s all in one place at one time.
Tumblr media
2. Philip Guston, Tate Modern, London
I want to lick and consume Guston’s paintings metaphorically and perhaps even literally, they ingest the eyeballs and linger in the mouth. Seeing the paintings together made so much sense, perhaps the curation sold the narrative but the exhibition made me think that the foray into full-on abstract expressionism was actually the inconsistency; right from the earliest paintings there was story-telling, narrative, figuration, politics, turmoil and a desire to point out what needs to change societally. With the pure abstract works, ambiguity felt too strong, everywhere else the balance was perfect, enough to be led and enough to form your own thoughts. So many works of greatness all together, the final room of grief was as heart-breaking and poetic as it comes.
Tumblr media
3. Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian, Tate Modern, London
This was an exhibition I had to see. I spent weeks preparing for the trip to go and see it. Having Long-Covid meant that I had to conserve and use my energy intensely - when everything saps strength and leaves you exhausted, from having a shower, to walking up stairs to reading a page of a book, then you have to be careful. T0 go to London for the day to see this exhibition was something I trained and equipped myself for/. I was so glad I did. The exhibition made me feel happy and lightness...an injection of art through the eyes which is so good for the soul. af Klint was paired with Mondrian, which made unexpected sense (to me, I know not to others) with so many surprising overlaps such as in their botanical paintings,and more general link to natural forms, the link to Theosophical thought and of course abstraction. One of my favourite rooms in the exhibition was titled the ether and was filled with sketchbooks, books, works by other artists and this amazing model of Mondrian's New York studio.
Tumblr media
4. Mike Nelson, Hayward Gallery, London
A proper art-as-experience encounter, the atmosphere of being within each of the installations by Nelson, restated at the Hayward was palpable; senses, memories, possibilities spiralled outwards, creating new stories and narratives. An embodied and tacit experience of speculative and to be-found-out-and-created knowledge. A novel or series of novellas contained in a material-led happenstance. This felt like the sort of show a big institution is made for, enabling a coming together of elements that would not be possible in the world without the structure behind it.
Tumblr media
5. Rebecca Fortnum, Henry Moore Institute, Leeds
In many ways the opposite of the behemoth of the shows of the year above; this was a quiet and intimate exhibition of new drawings, paintings and hand-printed wallpaper by Fortnum. The paintings are transcriptions of sculptures by fifteen women who visited or worked at Auguste’s Rodin’s studio. An intention of the work is to offer insight and exposure to these often-overlooked female sculptors. Rodin is known to have trained women to sculpt in the late nineteenth century when they were not allowed to enter into art schools in France, and employed some of them as studio assistants (or the ‘praticienne’ of the show’s title). Many of the women artists that Fortnum has selected to make work from had in what the text panel calls “an extraordinary, and in many cases unpublished, life narrative.” The show also featured drawings of men that were sculpted by the women artists, creating a gendered distinction between female subjects in paint and male subjects in drawings, albeit that the subject of Fortnum’s work is actually the unpictured female artists.
Tumblr media
6. Oliver Ventress, Project Space Plus, Lincoln
A beautifully installed coming together of sculpture, sound and video by Ventress that all speculates on what is out there, what might be out there in a delicate oscillation between despair and hope of what our present and future might be. The work beckoned me in quietly, gently insisting that I spend time with it, to slow down by heartbeat to become in line with the tide in one sculpture or the sound emanating from a large grey spherical sculpture (apparently at 210.42hz the theoretical frequency of the moon. With the tuning in to the resonance of the work, came an opportunity to speculate on the future in the present from a position of calm, not panic, all too rare an opportunity in 2023.
Tumblr media
7. Chad McCail, Turntable Gallery and tt88
You gotta love a bit of bonkers; a serpentine urban and rural landscape sweeps the carpet tiles on the high street, giants roam the gallery constructed from discarded detritus of the capitalist waste-culture, brains exude from trees and gonzo lizards pelt churches with walnut-like objects. Poke a bit further though and melancholy descends as the worst aspects of humanity seep everywhere: capitalist-greed, paedophilia, and environmental-apocalypse.
Tumblr media
8. Brendan Lyons, Bridewell, Liverpool
A joyful form of institutional critique of painting, one rich in materiality. In one gallery several paintings line the walls, completely conventional in description. In one gallery a range of fixings for hanging paintings line the walls, completely conventional in description. That the description is for one and the same gallery is the magic of Lyons work. Each fixing has been constructed fully from paint, being both itself and a simulacra of the hidden elements of painting, an opening up and unlocking. In the other gallery three new pieces are bold in the way the first gallery is subtle. Ivy creeps down the walls and over canvas; parcel tape tries to fix a smashed glass of an empty frame; multiple blank canvas are tapped to the wall with Gaffa and parcel tape…or look a bit closer.
Tumblr media
9. Rosa Barba, Tate Modern, London
The Tanks at Tate Modern are a brilliant space to encounter Barba’s work; the atmosphere of the space evokes the type of places the artist is attracted too, places that are pregnant with a past. 3 35mm film installations affectingly occupy the space, the visuals draw you in, the sound quivers with the image, but perhaps most evocatively the projectors percolate all the space in their industriousness that comes close to humanity in their presence.
Tumblr media
10. Lynette Yiadom Boakye, Tate Britain, London
I could have had several number tens on this list, significantly I whittled a shortlist down to five, all of which were painting exhibitions. So why does Yiadim Boayake become number ten? Perhaps it is the way she handles paint, something I wish I could inhabit? Or perhaps it is the way she creates stories with paints? Or perhaps it is the way she conjures personal lives, and memories of histories in the people she paints from imagination? Perhaps it is the way she invents archetypes for our time in the presence of the people? Or perhaps it is because I want to look, to spend time, to look harder, nearer, closer, more attentively? Or perhaps it is because I struggle with the words, the paintings do what (my) words can’t, reach the soul.
The Transformative Brilliance of Architectural Glass
In the realm of modern architecture, glass has emerged as a transformative material, reshaping skylines and redefining spatial experiences. From towering skyscrapers to minimalist residential designs, architectural glass has become synonymous with elegance, innovation, and functionality.
Tumblr media
Architectural glass offers a unique combination of transparency, versatility, and strength, allowing architects to push the boundaries of design and create structures that blend seamlessly with their surroundings. Its ability to transmit light while providing thermal insulation has revolutionized building aesthetics and energy efficiency.
One of the most striking aspects of architectural glass is its ability to blur the line between interior and exterior spaces. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls dissolve barriers, inviting nature into built environments and flooding interiors with natural light. This seamless integration with the outdoors enhances the quality of life for occupants, fostering a sense of connection to the surrounding environment.
The use of glass in architecture is not limited to residential or commercial buildings. Cultural institutions, such as museums and galleries, often utilize glass facades to create visually stunning landmarks. The Louvre Pyramid in Paris and the Glass House by Philip Johnson are iconic examples of how glass can be used to create architectural marvels that capture the imagination.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, architectural glass plays a crucial role in sustainable design. Advanced glass technologies, such as low-emissivity coatings and insulated glazing units, help reduce energy consumption by minimizing heat transfer and controlling solar gain. By harnessing natural light and optimizing thermal performance, glass-clad buildings can significantly reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable built environment.
Moreover, the versatility of architectural glass extends beyond traditional flat panels. Innovations in glass manufacturing have led to the development of curved, textured, and even photovoltaic glass, opening up endless possibilities for creative expression and functional design. These advancements have enabled architects to experiment with dynamic forms and intricate geometries, pushing the boundaries of what is achievable with glass.
However, the widespread adoption of architectural glass also raises challenges, particularly concerning privacy, glare control, and maintenance. Architects must carefully consider factors such as orientation, shading devices, and cleaning methods to ensure optimal performance and occupant comfort.
Architectural glass represents a compelling fusion of artistry, technology, and sustainability in modern architecture. Its ability to seamlessly blend form and function, while enhancing occupant well-being and reducing environmental impact, underscores its enduring significance in shaping the built environment of the future. As architects continue to push the boundaries of innovation, the transformative brilliance of architectural glass will undoubtedly remain at the forefront of architectural discourse.
Depending on your study area, your main source of light might be a large desk lamp, a ceiling fixture, or natural light from a window. Make sure that this light is bright enough for you to read and work without straining your eyes. For example, Lux Silverwood Table Lamp for Bedroom can be an ideal choice.
Why Are People Obsessed with Mid-Century Modern Design?
Tumblr media
Mid-century modern design is one of the most popular design styles right now and for good reason. It boasts clean lines, pops of color, and if you buy an older home, it can be a natural fit with the existing elements of the property.
So, what exactly is mid-century modern design, and how can you make it work in your home?
Mid-Century Modern Basics
Mid-century modern design is based on architects’ work who moved from Germany to the U.S. after World War Two. These architects led the way in mid-century modern design, which emphasizes functionality and simplicity.
The period, while there is some disagreement on specifics, generally is considered to have lasted from the 1940s to the 1960s, but much of what we think of as mid-century modern now is from the 60s.
Mid-century modern design grew from the changes that were occurring post-war, and it reflected a sense of optimism.
These design concepts are focused on limited accessories, functionality and form, and sleek lines. In mid-century modern design, there is the use of different types of materials, including both traditional and non-traditional. For example, wood is often mixed with Lucite or metal.
There’s a lot of contrast in mid-century design, not just in materials but in other ways. For example, you might seek the very sleek lines that characterize the design style paired with organic shapes, such as a live-edge table.
The general idea behind mid-century design, above all else, is that pieces of furniture are like art in and of themselves, but they should take up as little space as possible. There’s nothing unnecessary in mid-century design.
There are many similarities between mid-century and Scandinavian design. Scandinavian design became more popular around the same time as mid-century in the 1950s. The two inevitably influenced one another as a result.
If you’ve ever been to Palm Springs or you’ve seen photos, it’s perhaps the capital of mid-century modern. The desert oasis became a resort town for celebrities from L.A. in the 1950s, and the homes and style of design is maintained beautifully there.
Architecture
Mid-century impacted architecture, as well. There were architects like Philip Johnson and Richard Neutra who ran with the style. Some of the features of mid-century homes include long, low and flat roofs, and open floorplans with organic flow. Split-level homes were also common in mid-century architecture.
Stone fireplaces, planked ceilings, and natural light were key in mid-century architecture and design.
Color Palettes
While mid-century is primarily about simplicity, there is one area where things get especially interesting which are the color palettes.  For example, the use of bold colors like orange or emerald green is common. In current, updated versions of mid-century style, you see many unique colors like shades of pink and saturated blues.
How Can You Create a Mid-Century Space?
One of the first things you can do to capture the simple style of mid-century is to take out things in a space that you don’t need. From there, you can think of it like building an art collection. Start integrating mid-century pieces one-by-one.
While you might want to stick with the clean lines and minimalism of mid-century consistently, that doesn’t mean you can’t also intermix other styles into your home.
If you have large windows, keep them uncovered if possible, to ensure unobstructed natural light.
If you do need to use curtains, choose lightweight fabrics like linen that allow for the natural light to flow into a space.
Sculptural chandeliers can be a focal point in a mid-century modern room, and avoid oversized furniture. The idea is to appreciate negative space rather than trying to fill every square inch with furniture, which is common in more traditional design concepts. Along with making sure your furniture isn’t too big, look for low profiles.
Integrate elements of nature, whether that’s natural wood furniture or potted plants.
As far as the actual furniture and other items you purchase, one option is to splurge for authentic pieces. If you’re not ready to do that, you can still find replicas at a more budget-friendly price. Even much of what Ikea offers could be easily integrated into a mid-century design concept. There are also retailers with pricing that’s considered middle-of-the-road such as Crate and Barrel, with beautiful mid-century-inspired options.
Wireless Smoke Detectors
Tumblr media
There are numerous types of wireless smoke detectors on the market today. Some of the most popular include the Google Nest Protect, the X-Sense, and the First Alert OneLink Safe & Sound. But before you buy any of these products, make sure you understand some important features.
First Alert OneLink Safe & Sound
A newly released smart smoke detector from First Alert, the Onelink Safe & Sound is voice controlled and can play music from Bluetooth sources. It also features Alexa integration, and can be programmed to notify property managers in the event of a fire.
The device is available as a hardwired model or in a battery-powered version. If you go with a battery-powered unit, you will have to replace the batteries every six months. However, if you opt for a hardwired option, the battery should last for up to five years.
You can set up the Onelink Safe & Sound with the free Onelink app. This app walks you through the installation process, and guides you through all the different Wi-Fi configurations.
The device can also be linked to other smart home devices, including Philips Hue smart lights. You can even control other Nest products with it. In addition, it supports Apple’s HomeKit system.
Onelink Safe & Sound is voice controlled, meaning it can be remotely notified through a smartphone or tablet. The alarm can also play audiobooks, music, and radio stations. As a bonus, it features voice location technology.
X-Sense
The X-Sense wifi smoke detector is a smart gadget that allows you to control it from your phone. You can set the alarm to be silent, receive notifications and check the battery level. This is a useful device to have around the home, especially during power outages.
The X-Sense XS01-WT is a Wi-Fi smoke alarm that uses a photoelectric sensor. It can be easily installed and will alert you when there is an emergency. Unlike traditional smoke detectors, the X-Sense is designed to avoid false alarms.
It comes with a small round bracket that you can attach to your wall. Alternatively, you can also hang it up on a ceiling.
The alarm has an 85-dB loud buzzer that can be heard by everyone in the house. When the alarm is triggered, the unit performs three separate smoke concentration analyses in intervals of 10 seconds.
In addition, it has a large LED escape light that automatically turns on when the alarm is activated. This gives the alarm a professional look.
Impact by Honeywell
The 5808W3 wireless photoelectronic smoke detector from Honeywell is a sleazy but effective alternative to the traditional smoke alarm. As the name suggests it is 3V lithium powered and can be paired with the 5881ENHC receiver for optimal performance. Although the device is not sexy by the standards of the modern era it does the trick and is a bit pricey to boot. It is also worth noting that there are plenty of better options in the same price range. That is, if you can afford the monthly subscription. Not only is the device a breeze to set up, it is also a breeze to remove. This isn’t to mention the fact that it is designed to last and not fall apart like many of its wireless brethren. Hence, you’ll be able to sleep well at night knowing that you and your family are not a sweat. Besides, it’s an easy way to make sure you don’t forget to turn the lights on before stepping into your bed.
Google Nest Protect
Google’s Nest Protect wifi smoke detector offers a high-tech way to protect your family from fires. It uses advanced dual-sensor technology to detect both flaming and smoldering fires. It also includes a 10-year CO sensor and mobile alerts, providing extra reassurance.
Google’s Nest Protect can be purchased in either a battery-powered or wired version. Each features a ring LED that changes colors to show its status. A red light indicates that the sensor is operating, while a yellow light indicates that it is not.
In addition to the LED, the alarm has an audible speaker. It also includes a built-in pathway light that illuminates when the alarm sounds. This feature helps users avoid tripping over something.
It can be controlled by a phone, tablet, or computer. Using the app, the device gives you clear voice alerts. The app also allows you to silence false alarms. You can also use it to check your battery levels.
Lastly, Nest Protect can be used to interact with other Nest products. For example, it can be turned on by a Nest camera, or it can shut down your home’s HVAC system.
