There Was an Attempt:
A Day Out
[Death/ Muerte (Puss in Boots) x Immortal! Reader
(I'm back! I just finished finals and I'm glad I finally get to have some proper sleep, so here's a slightly longer fic as a celebration)
It was another busy day in the market today, it seemed. With people bustling around in packed groups as they looked from stall to stall, it almost seemed difficult to get through the crowd. But she’s had years of practice, and this busy market day was like any other busy day she’s ever had.
Gliding through the crowd with ease, she was able to get to the stall she had been looking for, a grin tugging on her lips in victory.
“Glad to see you again, señora!”
“You know I can’t resist the sweetest apples in the market!” She winked at the vendor from under the hood of her cloak, who laughed and gave a wave as he turned to handle another customer. Plucking one of the bright red apples from the stall and rolling it around in her hand, she places a few on the basket, about to call out to the vendor to pay when a familiar voice rumbled next to her ear.
“Don’t move. Don’t talk. Or at least don’t look up at me when you talk. Just don’t make it obviou--”
“Yeah, yeah I get it,” she hissed under her breath, glaring to her left where he was ducked to her height before turning her attention back to the vendor, who still seemed to be busy handling the other customers than worrying about her. She shifts her gaze back to Muerte, who she couldn’t really see because of her hood. “Now what are you doing here? I never really see you outside the bar…” she turns to check the vendor again. Still looking away. “Or in the morning.”
Though she couldn’t see him, she could almost hear and feel the grin that tugged up his lips. “Are you already sick of seeing me all the time?”
“No,” she grinned, finally turning to look at him. “Just weird seeing your stupid face in this much light.” Flicking his nose, she turns to call out to the vendor, Muerte holding his nose as he grumbles under his breath, waiting for her to finish paying.
When she turns to head to the next stall, having to squeeze through the crowd of people and dodging a few running children along the way, he was still following her, and it didn’t take a minute or two until she finally mustered up the courage to speak.
“So why are you here?” She paused, turning to look at the people to see if they were looking at her. When the coast was clear, she turned to look up at Muerte, who seemed to be faring quite just as well in the crowd as much as she was. “Did someone die nearby? Or did you just miss me?”
Muerte exhales through his nose, amused. “No, I’m actually… protecting… someone.”
He was turning his head as if searching through the crowd, and his words caught her interest.
“‘Protecting’?” She parroted, but Muerte turned to another direction, almost losing him in the crowd if he hadn’t been taller than most of the people among them.
“Hey!” She called out in slight offense, not bothering with his rules as she pushed back against the crowd to get to him faster, angering a couple of people along the way who cursed and yelled as she went. He was hunched on one of the stalls, looking through the wonderful smelling baked goods that were lined in front of him, most the customers (especially the vendor) cowering in the corner at the sight of him.
Well, guess they weren’t being discreet anymore.
Blowing out a frustrated breath, she walks up to his side, giving an apologetic glance to the vendor.
“Protecting?” She repeats, actually considering buying some bread as the wonderful smell hits her nose. Guess she didn’t mind having a snack or so later on while reading. “I never thought you as the type.”
“I’m not,” He replied, paying the shaking vendor with what he owes and grabbing the bagful of pastries he had bought. Which was, surprisingly, quite a lot. “But she’s important, and anything that happens to her would have dire consequences.”
He turns to leave, much to the vendor’s relief, and she curses under her breath, quickly paying for the pastries she had placed on her basket before running to catch up to him. Just what was the point of  walking with her if he was going to keep leaving her in the first place?
“Slow down! Geez, it’s like you can’t wait up or something.” She grumbles, taking one of the bread from her basket and taking a bite out. “If this person is that important, then what the hell is she doing out here?”
“Because she’s one hell of a stubborn doe.”
He places a hand on her shoulder, ushering her through the crowd before she could react and leading her towards a clear field, empty and quiet, save for the doe that sat amongst the flowers and grass, humming a calming tune to herself as she weaved a flower crown.
“Oh stars,” she breathed out, the realization crashing down on her.  “Is that--?”
“Vida,” Muerte confirmed, then turned to her in a slight glare. “Don’t flirt. Trust me, we’ll never hear the end of it again.”
A mischievous grin tugged up her lips. “Who says I’ll be flirting with you?” She couldn’t help the laugh that escaped her lips at the look of disbelief and slight offense that crossed his face.
“Muerte?” Vida’s voice broke through, and she froze in embarrassment at the thought of Vida hearing what she had said, feeling her cheeks slightly tingling as Muerte laughed at the look on her face.
“It’s me,” Muerte hums, being the first to walk towards the doe. “I brought you what you asked.” He lifts his hand that holds the bag full of pastries. “And an additional guest, if you don’t mind.”
“Of course not!” Vida’s ears perked and her eyes seemed to sparkle at the sight of (Y/n) walking behind the towering wolf, pushing herself to her feet and immediately running towards her. “Oh look at you! Such a small thing! Come, come! Sit!” Vida ushers her towards the small picnic blanket that she must’ve set up earlier.
“Thank you,” (Y/n) hummed, Muerte sitting in between her and Vida with a small secret glare. She scrunches her nose up at him, then turns to Vida with an exhausted huff. “He’s very nice, isn’t he?”
Taking note of the sarcasm in her voice, Vida laughs with a snort, covering her mouth as she did so. “Oh he’s always been that way.” She starts, grabbing a pastry from the bag as Muerte rolls his eyes with a huff.
“But you must be (Y/n)! Oh, Muerte has told me a lot about you!”
  That was a surprise.
“Oh?” She raised her brows up, mouth formed in a small ‘o’ as she couldn’t form the proper words to say.
“Vida,” Muerte warns, stopping midway from sharpening one of his sickles as he gives her a glare.
“He does,” Vida continues with a teasing grin, much to Muerte’s clear dismay as he brings a hand up to his eyes with a groan. “As well as your… current predicament.”
“My..? Oh,” she rubs the back of her neck, “Well? Do you know how I got it? Maybe… you made a mistake?” Her voice shook lightly as she spoke, not knowing what Vida’s reaction would be if she had outright suggested a mistake in her making. To her relief, Vida simply gave her an apologetic smile and shook her head.
“No, I don’t. And neither of us could smell a curse on you, either, so it’s not that. I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine. I have a long life to figure it out.” (Y/n) grins. “You think Muerte will stick around?”
“Well, he already talks quite fondly of you at home, so he might.” Vida grins, looking up at the wolf as she takes a bite out of the pastries, Muerte letting out another groan in the background.
  “Vida!”
The next few hours or so went by just like that. With Vida oftentimes trying to embarrass Muerte that he threatened to leave the both of them here if they kept at it. At some point, Vida had shown her how to weave the flower crowns she was doing earlier, and they had fun trying to chase Muerte into wearing them (which after a few minutes of running around and begging, he finally sat down and agreed, though he had a sour look on his face the entire time with his arms crossed above his chest and a small pout on his lips).
“Oh don’t be such a baby,” (Y/n) grins, reaching up to his head to place the crown on his head, his ears tilted back as he grumbled. She leans slightly backwards to get a better look at him, a proud smile on her lips. “See! You look so much better now—it adds some color to you.”
He reaches up to the crown on his head, and she immediately smacks it away before he could even think of removing it.
“Don’t take it off! I made that with my bare hands, you know!”
“I do, I saw you just now.” He huffed, then turned to watch Vida as she interacted with some of the woodland animals that had strolled in earlier. (Y/n) watches her too, a small smile tugging up her lips.
“She’s very nice,” she plucks a flower up from the ground, twirling it in between her fingers.
“Too nice. It’s going to get her killed out here.”
“Well I’m glad she has you to protect her all the time,”
Muerte turns to her, an unexpected soft look on his face.
  “Really?”
“Yeah,” she shrugged. “I mean, have you seen you? You can frighten anyone with those eyes.”
  “But not you?”
  She hums, “No, not really.”
“Why not?” He turned back to check if Vida was okay, and found her basically making each and every animal that came near her a flower crown.
“Because there’s nothing to be afraid of,” She smiles, looking up at him. “You’re beautiful, Muerte.”
His breath hitched, eyes widening for a fraction of a second before he turned away.
“I--” He starts, but the words were immediately lost in his tongue. He couldn’t bring himself to look back up at her, but he could hear her fuzzing with her basket as she leaned ever so slightly towards him to support her weight, close enough where he could feel her warmth against his arm.
“Ah crap,” She cursed, Muerte finally turning to look at her as she rubs a hand down her face. “I just remembered I have to get to the bar early tomorrow. Corin has the flu and everybody else is busy.” She sighs, pushing herself up to her feet with the basket on her arm. “He’s not going to die from that, is he?”
Muerte snickered, shaking his head. “No, from what I last saw he still has a pretty long life ahead of him.”
She breathed out a sigh of relief, a hand to her chest. Turning to look at Vida, it seemed that she was still busy tending to the animals, and she didn’t really feel like walking over there and having them all skitter and run away.
“Tell her that I had a great time,”
Muerte pushes himself up to his feet. “I’m sure she already knows that,” He grins. (Y/n) remembers the flower crown on his head, a laugh pushing past her lips.
“I still better see that flower crown the next time we see each other.”
He lets out a groan of complaint. “You know I can’t wear this when I’m out collecting souls!”
“Alright! Fine!” (Y/n) huffed, leaning up to her toes to try and grab the crown. Muerte immediately had his hands on her hips in case she lost balance, ducking down just the slightest. She takes the crown in her hands, then plucks one of the strands of lilac decorated along the edges of the flowers, tucking it into a slightly loose thread in his black poncho. “There, at least you still have a pop of color on you.”
She backs away with a hesitant step, patting his hands and lightly prying him away, her skin tingling where the warmth of his palm had been.
He eyes the small flower for a second, a small chuckle pushing past his lips. It was better than the flower crown, he had to say that. “I’ll make sure it doesn’t fall off.”
“You better.” She threatens teasingly, squinting her eyes and pointing a finger at him. He laughs, nodding his head and holding both his arms up in mock defense.
“I better go,” (Y/n) eyes the darkening sky, “See you next time at the bar?”
  Muerte hums.
  “I’ll be there.”
(Vida heard all of that, she's definitely teasing y'all the next time you see one another)

Request:
Can I request some death x life! Reader? She's the opposite of death and married to him? (Y/n) is a friend to Perrito as she would protect that pup and she was very happy that Perrito was able to find new friends. (Y/n) was the one who saved Perrito from getting drowned as she sees all life as her “children” and it pained to see Perrito nearly die.(Y/n) came across death in the last part of the movie as she was apologizing at Puss on her husband’s behalf.
I actually think this is a cute idea and I find the idea of y/n thinking of all life forms as her kids is amazing. Also it’s Kinda of gonna go along with y/n just being in the movie? Like she follows along by team friendship but they don’t know she’s there and just spy’s on them to make sure that perrito is in good hands.
Death with a wife who is the embodiment of life!
Fem! Reader she/her pronouns.
Warnings: a little bit of angst, spoilers to perrito’s past. Also it’s gonna be a bit long. And some fighting.
Tumblr media
You had lived for over a million years, you graced the earth with life while your husband was the one to end the timer of their limited life. You both have done your jobs for all your immortal lives. You appreciated all life form on the earth and soon you thought of them as your own children.
You were walking down a river with a small smile at the beautiful landscape. You heard a noise not to far from you and your eyes widened rushing towards the noise. As you got closer you saw a sock and some movement. Reaching out for the sock you then saw a head of a puppy looking happy but also confused. “Hello”! The puppy piped, your eyes went wide. “You can talk”? You asked and he nodded. You soon came to realize that he chewed a hole in to the sock but there was a couple rocks still in the bottom.
“Here let me get that for you my child”. You said softly pulling the rocks out. He shook the water off his fur. Smiling softly you rubbed his head,”what happened to you, why are in a sock with rocks?” You asked the naïve puppy in your arms as you pet him. “I’m it all the time In hide and seek, my litter mates always tired putting me in dumpsters, crates, but I always found them”! He says and your eyes went wide realizing what he was going through. “Today they got creative and so they put me in a sock with rocks in it and threw me in the river”!
You swore you felt your heart ache at that. “Oh my, how could they do that”? You felt slightly angry at his owners for nearly killing an innocent puppy. “Oh well I gotta go thank you for helping me out of the river after all I’m still it”! He yells jumping from your lap and running off.
Upon arriving home you were greeted with your husband, “hello darling how was your day”? You asked him always interested in how his day was even after millions of years. “It was actually a slow day today, what about yours”? He asked your eyes slightly averted from his. “It was a little sad”. You stated and his eyes softened. “Oh how so”.? “I was walking Down the river and I saw a sock”. Your husband could only nod and his ears were slightly perked. “When I got closer to the sock I saw a head pop out and their big eyes staring into to mine”.
Death slowly rubbed a paw against your back in a way to still show he was still listening. “When I took them completely out of the water I saw that there were a few rocks in the bottom of the sock”. “Then when I asked him what happened to him and why he was in there he said it was a game of hide and seek”. Your husband saw some tears form in your eyes and he gently wiped them away. “At least you saved him from drowning right”? He told you with a gentle smile as he cupped your cheek. You smiled at that and took note that you would do anything for the puppy.
About a year later you had heard of the infamous puss in boots, and how he wasted his lives. One day you had heard you husband grumble at how he finally got to go after the cat who thought he was immortal. “Hey muerte does he not have 1 life left”? You stated as you folded some laundry. “Yes but mi vida he didn’t value any of them”. “True but I say let him live his life I mean since he’s on his last life he might just settle down”. You simply stated folding one of your shirts. “I figured I’d take it now so he doesn’t die of accidentally falling off a cliff”. You laughed at that. “He claimed to be immortal and I want him to know that he’s not, and cause I’ve been following him for years”.
You sighed at your husband’s words and put the folded laundry up. “Hey I’m gonna head into town do you need anything”? You asked while grabbing your cloak. “No I don’t think so”. He responded from the other room.
About an hour later after visiting the market for some stuff for dinner. As your walking back you her a noise from below you and you see what seems to be an orange cat running for his life. “Huh he looked like puss in boots”. You say to yourself.
A couple months later you see your own husband go to the dark forest and out of curiosity you followed. ‘Oh lord what is he gonna do now’. You mentally asked yourself. Stepping inside you saw colorful hills and some big blue flowers in the distance they seem to have caught your attention. Making your way over you saw two cats and one small dog. You felt as though you knew the dog. “What’s your story”? Kitty soft paws asked the dog. “My story? Oh it’s actually a funny story”. You listened silently wondering why he was so familiar. “Back when I was a pup me and my litter mates lived with a family”. “A family full of pranksters who liked to play hide and seek and I was always it”. Your eyes widened as you thought of how could you meet the puppy you saved, but then he continued. “Pick on the little guy am I right”? “They tried putting me in a packing crate, a dumpster, no matter how hard they tried I’d always find them”. You could feel the familiar heart ache creep up on you. “So one day they got creative and they put me in a sock with rocks in it and threw me in the river”. You saw how kitty’s and puss’s eyes widened. “I somehow started above the water cause I saw a very pretty lady pick me up and take the rocks out”.
You smiled and realized that this was the puppy you saved just the year before. You saw how happy he looked with puss and kitty. You felt relieved at the fact that he found some people who would also protect him. You spied on them more then your husband because you wanted to make sure they were ok. Puss threw his stick sword out after receiving the blade from kitty, but then peritto jumped out to grab the stick. “Perrito”! Puss yelled, you had a bad feeling about what was going to happen.
You watched as jack horner came out from the bushes and had Perrito in his hand. “Hand over the wish or we can see what the unicorn horn can do”. “Put him down little jack Horner”! You yelled jumping down from the hill you were recently watching them from. Landing behinds kitty and puss you glared at jack. “Put him down little jack”. He glared right back at you, “oh what are you gonna do about it”? He now pointed the horn to you, “if you don’t want the puppy getting hurt why don’t I hit you with it instead”? He offered to which you smiled cause I mean you literally the embodiment of life he could hurt you with a single horn.
“Shoot away little jack”. You said, shooting the horn at you easily dodged and went straight for perrito. As all hell broke lose of fighting over the wish you grabbed perrito and caught a glimpse at puss being visibly uncomfortable and when you looked behind him you saw none other then your husband. Puss ran off and perrito jumped out of your arms and ran after puss.
About two hours later you caught up with team friendship and the others on the wishing star. There you saw puss and your husband fighting. “I know I can never defeat you Lobo but I will never stop fighting for this life”. Puss said aiming at death. Death growled as he picked up his sickles and slowly walked closer towards puss. You ran to the fire wall and stood beside kitty and perrito. Puss still holding his sword up as the giant wolf lowered his face to puss’s he growled for then turned away angrily. Slashing his sickles against the star, “por qué diablos fui a jugar con comida”?! “Your ruining this for me”. Turning back to puss he put a sickle under puss, “I came here for an arrogant little legend who thought he was immortal”. Death then sighed, “but I don’t see him anymore”.
Spinning the sickles he put them back in his belt,”live your life puss in boots live it well”. He said walking to the barrier. He turned his head back one last time and simply asked “you know we will meet again right”? “Si hasta la muerte”. Puss responded back, turning back to the barrier a whistle came from death before he entered it.
The fire wall ceased, perrito ran over to puss. Puss have him a hug with a small chuckle, kitty and you started to walk closer. “You know when you said death was after you I thought you were just being melodramatic”. You laughed at that, “no my husband is straight death, just like I’m life”. You told them to which the three looked at you. “Your married to death”?! Puss exclaimed, “yes and I’m sorry for all the trouble he caused you my child”. You apologized to him and now he was even more confused, “why did you call me your child”? Puss asked with an eyebrow raised.
“Just like how my husband is the embodiment of death, I’m the opposite I’m the embodiment of life, and I think of all living beings as my children”. You stated while you petted parrito’s head. “I’m the lady that saved parrito that day in the river”. And perrito’s eyes widened. “Please take care of him, and don’t throw him into a river or else”. You said narrowing your eyes at both puss and kitty. They both nodded and smiled nervously. “Though I wish you appreciated all of your lives puss, please make sure you appreciate this one for as long until you have to meet my husband again”. You said while standing up and turning to the barrier.
“Si señorita vida”. Puss responded hugging perrito again. “Bye miss life thank you for getting me out of the river”! Perrito yelled as you walked closer to the barrier. “No problem my child”! You yelled back as you entered the colorful wall.
Sorry This took longer then I wanted and if there is any bad Spanish translation please tell me. I actually liked writing this one. It’s actually my longest fic yet.

I didn't notice this the first time (or the second time) I watched it but Jack Horner didn't just cut off the horns of baby unicorns, he then raised them to pull his carriages and stuff. Messed up stuff right there.

I share with you a subbed snippet of an analysis made by one of my favorite youtubers, jordi maquiavello, who made a cool breakdown of the wolf's whistle from the last wish!
this adds more meaning to the whole scene, and feels complimentary to the theories of the melody being a somber and mocking version of fearless hero, and a version of ring around the rosy!
if you can, please watch his analysis! it's in spanish, but it's totally worth it. he points out a lot of small details which, I think, hadn't been mentioned before, and I love it so much.

God, the last wish was so good
The story and characters were so interesting! All the little references and implications were SO GOOD, everything felt very in character for puss and kitty, this was a really great sequel. I like the previous movie, even though i don't really like quite a bit of the humpty dumpty bits, but this movie i loved everything (MINUS THE FUCKING SWORDS GOING INTO NAILS. WHY)
The reason why Puss did everything because of fear was very understandeable (though still very much not right, in the case of leaving Kitty at the altar. But he recognizes and tries to do better which is very nice), and death following him making it seem hard to know if it is him or Puss' mind making stuff up, so good. Honestly all the scenes with death were really good, especially with his voice, god, that was such a nice voice
(also i did scream a bit when i saw that Wagner Moura voiced him. It is still a bit surreal that he has been on a lot of big stuff outside of Brazil)
The reveal that he was death was really chilling. The space with all the past lives (which is really cool for another bit but that's another tangent for another time) was a perfect setting for this reveal, since he died so carelessly because of not fearing death and laughing in the face of it, the marks on the scythes (which were a pretty on the nose but hard to guess detail, love that), amazing scene
The animation is another bit that i really loved. I mean, what can i say that hasnt been said already? It looks like a painting, its energetic and fun, the colors are gorgeous, Ive been loving what has been done recently
The music was also really nice, i loved the details of how in every fight, the hits would match the music. Very nice
I really enjoyed how this movie bridged the gap between the first movie, and the Shrek universe. Because of how PIB is set up, theres not much of the magical aspect like the Shrek movies had, but PIB:TLW really did
All the little references for the old movie were really funny and well implemented, especially the "ooooh" cat and puss and kitty's gravity defying dance
Not to mention the whole Goldie and the bears stuff. I love that they chose Goldie because the original tale is about finding the "just right", so it was really fitting to extrapolate that there never would be a just right for her. But Im happy that she realized that she already had the just right. Theyre not a perfect family but you can see the love and care. Im sure they'll get better
The puns were really funny jfsjdjfkf hasta la muerte is my favorite
I feel like i could write an essay for a bunch of the small things in this movie, theres was so much that i could talk about and im having to contain myself a little to not make this 2k words long fnsndnfnd

Rewatched TLW earlier today and have decided that my new personal hc is that Kitty is fully 100% lying to Puss abt not showing up for their wedding.
Like homegirl has no reason to be as angry with Puss as she is with that particular explanation! If Kitty hadn’t even bothered to show up bc she knew that she was never going to be able to compete with Puss’ one true love (himself, the legend), then why is she angry that Puss didn’t bother to show up either? Why did she even bother to agree to marry him at all?
It feels considerably more likely to me that Kitty overheard Puss talking to Perrito, realised that Puss was being honest abt feeling terrible abt leaving her at the alter, and went thru the best options for lessening that discomfort in her head before choosing the thing to say that fit her needs best. Kitty is, after all, insecure as hell and suffering from very severe trust issues at her core. She is DESPERATE for the connections she makes onscreen despite her best efforts to be a lone wolf and to keep herself from ever trusting anyone. Upon realising that Puss very genuinely felt bad for making her harden her heart and close up again, she realises 2 things very quickly: 1, that Puss HAS changed and 2, that her insecurities (while valid and deserving of the time she needs to process them) are things that she can work thru (and that she WANTS to work thru WITH Puss).
