asking about the legally blonde fics 🙄 (JOKING i actually really want to hear about them. please?)
THANK YOU its not letting me add a cut guys..... i would if i could..... long post??
alright hi i write legally blonde fanfics after being involved in a production of it earlier this year and. well.
like i think my fanfic is very ehhhh for most people because i like essentially getting to write completely different songs and then having to integrate them into canon if that makes sense?? based solely off the musical, like, none of pilar margot serena really have ANY established backstory and i havent seen the movie or read the book in such a long time. so what i mean is that i get to write this horrifying piece about someone experiencing parentifcation in an abusive environment and then try to integrate that character into the more canonised characterisation.
i guess the reason is like. of musicals, legally blonde is very.... i don't know, its pretty solid in terms of content for the musical. its absurd like most musicals which kind of facilitated me and my friend (im gonna @ their dead blog from when they were like 12 @kittykatturtles-blog) to make crack theories and then give me things that i wanted to extrapolate from it. I guess the other thing about these fics is that i want to write about how. fucked a lot of rich people are. i think part of this is coming out of the dsmp fandom or engaging with it more critically in terms of a fandom and being able to recognise the kind of repetitiveness of a lot of fanfictions in a very... trope esque way? like there are so many fics which are basically the same and a lot of those feel like they didn't have anything to say or think about in terms of the characters.
i think the other part of it which matters to me is being able to write about themes which are genuinely really serious, and at times intimately familiar to me; exploitative religious groups, familial abuse, dissociative identity disorder, and more, without the worry of too heavy scruntiny. like i remember when i was writing for dsmp i always got kind of scared of writing something too serious and having people like like. oh my god. hes a MINOR. YOURE KILLING ME. the whole point of the stories aren't just that bad things are happening or that these characters are justified or whatever, it's about. how do you keep going? how do you keep loving? how do you explain yourself.
i think something thats super important to be is character autonomy. it rings pretty bad for me when a traumatised or disabled is given no action on their end at all for anything, making them a hollow slate for the abled characters to support and research and worry about and lie to. to me, as someone who is traumatised and is disabled, that kind of dynamic is gross to read about. so its important to me to be able to write about, even if it cant exist in real life, the idea of supportive people who are also kind of fucked up and having to acknowledge the real hopelessness of complex issues is something i want to depict in my writing.
for a lot of people, for most i think, when terrible things happen they can't just stop and they somehow have to keep on going despite the world feeling like its stopped turning for them. and i think a lot of bad things do happen to people when they are still young. one of the worst years of my life was when i was 12 and its genuinely quite hard to top it. trying to write the spiky complex feelings of self hatred and confusion and injustice you can't place and hopelessness is cathartic to me and i think its important for me that it exists.
the other thing is that. like by the nature of my writing, this is leading to a better future. im a pretty slow writer, and i can't be hyperfixated on the story i need to just be continually trying to think and work on it. but because we know; we know they make it to college, we know they have friends, and in this i know that they can make it to adulthood, its an assertion, from me as a writer and from me as a traumatised disabled person that i will make a better future and the worst parts of your life will not definte them. idk.
this is the link to the first two fics and im writing a new one as we speak
if you want to hear more about ttolt characters (we have pilar, serena, margot, elle, serenas parents and brother, pilars infinite fucking siblings and parents, and a few others) then send me asks about it. PLEASE dear god

hi! i’m auditioning for pilar/greek chorus in legally blonde but am mostly a beginner singer! i am an alto and i wanted to do fabulous baby by sister act but could not find any backing track for it so i’m trying to find a new one! unless you think fabulous baby is the right song. (the audition is april 7th). thank you!!
I think Fabulous Baby could definitely work, but I know the struggle of trying to find a backing track for a video audition (or one where there won't be an accompanist). If you grab the melody line, "We're Not Done" from Bring it On! might work for you. "Don't Want To Be Here" from Ordinary Days may also work (normally I'd avoid Ordinary Days as it can be a difficult sight read, but since you're singing with a track we have some more freedom). You could look at "Fearless" from Mean Girls, too. Or, "Right In Front of Your Eyes" from The Wedding Singer may work.
Break a leg!!

sorry, you said elle woods has a disco elysium skillset in her brain?? please please elaborate this is like RIGHT up my alley
OMG YES OK THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING LET ME SHOW YOU
So, Harry's Skills are different parts of his brain that are partially externalized and interact with him, advising with their own opinions. With the except of Shivers and high level Esprit de Corps and Empathy, these skills only know what he knows. Their perspective is derived from and based on his own thoughts and experiences, just with a layer of separation. Harry is the only one who can hear and interact with them.
Elle Woods from Legally Blonde: The Musical has a "Greek Chorus" in her head. Appearing once she leaves her sorority at UCLA, this chorus acts as a support structure and advises her, taking on the likeness of her friends (with 3 girls being the most prominent). And they're not just singing her own thoughts back at her, they've got opinions and preferences for what Elle should do.
Take when she first finds out that Warner is now dating Vivienne. The chorus appears, one of the girls first tells her to fight Vivienne, an immediate reaction of violence. This is Elle's kneejerk instinct, but then she thinks for a second and tells she won't do that, asking "Who's got a plan B?" In response, a different member of the chorus steps forward and proposes she try to win Warner back by being more attractive and sexual than his new girlfriend. She gets caught up in the dancing of this section and is twirled/thrown towards Warner and Vivienne exclaiming "Oh my god you're making me sick!" out loud.
Now, let's look at that in a Disco Elysium way, shall we? The first girl (in this case, Margo) is an easy mirror to Physical Instrument, wanting to lash out and fight in response to a perceived attack. When Elle discards that option, another girl (Pilar) tells her she should, well, shake some junk (her words) to get him back. Again, this sounds just like Electrochemistry. She evens does Harry's thing of responding to something his skills said out loud, confusing people around him!
Even elements of the way they appear are similar. Take Composure and Half Light for instance. Their icons both look like Kim and Cuno respectively, taking on the visage of who Harry most subconsciously connects to those skills. Elle does a less severe version of this, but her Greek Chorus still retains some elements of the person they're based on. When she needs someone with energy and spirit, she calls on Serena, the cheerleader. While we don't see much of her, one of the ensemble members of the chorus is the 'smart nerdy' girl from her sorority.
As they're all in her mind, they're all striving for the same goal, but they can disagree and argue with Elle! They usually don't argue amongst themselves because Elle's brain is much more cohesive and the people they're based on are all very close friends, but when Elle does something they think is a really bad idea, like going to dye her hair brown to appeal to Warner's tastes, they react in shock and tell her "no!" and to not do that. This is Elle making an out of character ill-advised snap decision and her more internal mind starts shouting and doesn't like it one bit!
Also, a thing to note is that the Greek Chorus isn't like, some musical handwavey stuff that is just within suspension of disbelief. In the one instance where someone else can see the chorus (her good friend, Paulette, also her hairdresser, kinda kooky, it makes sense that'd it'd be her), Elle refers to them as "her Greek Chorus". Later in the musical when the 3 main girls from her sorority show up, she mistakes them for her chorus, and says that "she doesn't need voices in her head today." So she is explicitly interacting with the Chorus in a way very similar to Harry!
Finally to wrap up this veritable essay, there's an interesting difference between Harry's Skills and Elle's Chorus that relates to how their minds work. Harry has four distinct and separate categories of skills, each with their own colors and basic symbols (eg. motorics having a lot of hands/limbs). And, with the exception of Volition, they all kinda hate Harry and want him to yknow, die. Elle Woods, on the other hand, isn't a 43 year-old man going for gold in the Worst Mental Health Ever Olympics, so her Chorus has a much more uniform look, with all of them wearing white with gold accents. Additionally, a key trait of them is the focus on "positivity" and their enthusiastic high energy, a major part of Elle herself.
In conclusion, Elle Woods from Legally Blonde: The Musical has her own set of Disco Elysium style skills, canonically and explicitly.
Also I think it's funny to imagine harry and the skills doing this \/
And thanks for reading! I do hope this was an enjoyable little romp in connecting two wildly different pieces of media

REVIEW: Theatre Ancaster's Legally Blonde: The Musical is a delightful frenzy of pink, polish and purpose
Tumblr media
Entering an auditorium bathed in pink, Theatre Ancaster kicks off its 2023-24 season with the highly energetic Legally Blonde: The Musical.  Like its cinematic source material, the musical focuses on Malibu Sorority girl, Elle Woods who goes through a breakup with her boyfriend, Warner. To win him back, Elle gains admission to Harvard Law (what, like it's hard?), challenging the 'dumb blonde' stereotype and sending an empowering message of perseverance and reaching one's full potential.
Tumblr media
Flooded in a warm wash of pinks and projected glitter, the show opens with eagerness and girly enthusiasm as we are introduced to the Delta Nu Sisterhood featuring the always impressive talents of Ellie Miller (Serena), Michelle Wagman (Margot) and Alanna Ferguson (Pilar). This trio is highlighted throughout, especially in numbers Positive and Bend and Snap and their chemistry and comedic chops are delightful to watch.
In a surprisingly quiet intro, Jennifer Budd takes the stage as Elle Woods. Budd's voice is sweet, warm and sassy. Her early characterizations don't always match her vocal prowess but we easily fall for and root for her. Budd's performance only grows in confidence and strength and, like Elle, she transforms into a force to be reckoned with especially in numbers So Much Better (that showstopping BELT!) and Legally Blonde and its reprise.
As the show progresses, we meet Warner (a deliciously snobby and amusing performance from Riley Macnab who impresses with his strong tenor and smooth harmonizing with Budd), Vivian (played by Emily Daquano who channels frigid cruelty beautifully and surprises us later on with her change of heart and belting encouragement to Elle) and the smarmy, egotistical lawyer and professor Callahan (played expertly by Jim Broadley). To say there is an enormous cast is an understatement but know that like with most musicals, the ensemble is the heart and soul of the production and this is no exception. Some standouts include Abi Veenstra as Enid whose characterizations are hilarious, Gareth Finnegan playing multiple ensemble roles but blows us away in There, Right There!, Stacey Bishop wows us with her spunky would-be murderess Brooke in the act two opener Whipped into Shape and, in a perfect cameo, Colin Lapsley has the audience cheering and hooting for his charming dreamboat Kyle, the UPS delivery person.
Of course, in this plethora of talent, I must mention the incredible performances by Elle's unexpected love interest and salon powerhouse best friend. Zain Lapsley is a young but believable Emmett who has such a wonderfully trained voice and kindness embodied in his character that any person would be a fool not to fall for them and their adorkable charm. Kate Rodgers is Paulette, a slightly deranged but relatable dreamer. Her performances are hilarious and full of enthusiasm. Her solo Ireland is ridiculously wistful and her confidence soars in Bend and Snap. Together, these two are Elle's biggest cheerleaders (that aren't in her imagination) and there has been notable effort put into building their characters. Bravo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As per usual with Theatre Ancaster, the set design and lighting design are top notch. Since Legally Blonde is very focused on large, flashy choreographed numbers, there isn't as much set utilization as in past productions but this keeps scenes moving smoothly. The choreography is consistently impressive and deserved every moment of applause. There are some opening night glitches and the pre-recorded soundtrack leaves next to no margin for error which means this cast needs to work very hard to ensure they keep time with the tracks. This is a cast of real professionals who keep going and appear unfettered by any minor mishaps in choreography, dialogue or lighting cues.
The production team noted as well that Legally Blonde is a product of the early 2000's where usage of outdated slang, sexist language, diet culture (fatphobia in particular) and staged depictions of non-consensual sexual advances occur throughout. There are some lyric changes to smooth out some of these problematic issues, but where it was impossible to change, the audience is given warning which may sound like overkill for some, but many audience members will appreciate this acknowledgement.
The lasting impact of Legally Blonde: The Musical is very much like its leading lady. It appears fun and frivolous and it is, in the best way possible. However, the vulnerable moments throughout and the growth of the characters show that Legally Blonde is truly more than its surface level pink, glittery spectacle. Its message of persevering over stereotypes speaks as loudly as it did when the film and original Broadway production were first released. This message and its impact proves that finding one's purpose, even when the odds are stacked against you, never goes out of style.
Grab your favourite stuffed animal (extra snaps for stuffed puppies), wear pink, practice your bend and snap and get yourself to Theatre Ancaster. You will not be disappointed.
