I really liked your Vash and Knives isekai, so good. Especially the music part. Made me wonder what kind of music do you think Vash and Knives would make together and what would they make on their own. Like would Vash be more pop and rock and Knives more orchestral and indie. I wanna hear more on your thoughts on this if you wanna share. Just go pig wild!
honestly I hope this makes sense cause I don't actually really know a lot about music smbdkbs but either way I had fun writing this!!
•Nai does make a lot of orchestra music, although I think he'd mainly stick to the piano, he does explore with other instruments often. I could see him making music that sounds a lot like boss battle music. or, like similar to his theme, music that sounds a bit heroic. sometimes he'll make the most gut wrenching piano piece.
•he doesn't really write lyrics much since he uses music as a way to deal with his emotions and it makes him feel way too vulnerable. Nai won't even show Vash some of the stuff he has written. at least, not yet (he may show Vash some overtime as they've healed and worked through their past.)
•but when he does, he writes complex lyrics, never actually, truly writing about his feelings. always leaves a lot up to interpretation but he doesn't mind. (kinda likes the mystery to it in a way lol)
•every once in a while he kinda writes based around the past and everything that's happened.
•like the anger and confusion he had as a kid, finding Tesla, the betrayal of Rem and Vash choosing humans over him. a song of the hope of having wanted to make a paradise for himself, Vash and their sisters, then for it to be ripped away when he showed up on earth. but then the song becomes filled with hope again, Nai wishes to live a future where both him and Vash are happy on Earth.
•(also Nai is lowkey jealous that Vash's theme is like a cowboy theme and makes one of his own.)
•Vash writes a lot more happy and upbeat songs! they're usually about love, happiness, looking to a bright future. he wants to bring happiness and hope to people around the world.
•Vash mainly focuses on pop, rock, and edm, but he really wants to try his and at a variety of different genres and instruments. he finds it really fun and challenging. plus he loves learning about the music of each culture, why the music is the way it is, the significance of it, it's history. Vash would also love to work with other producers!
•trimax Vash especially, would write about a mosaic of love that grows as people close to it dies. because even though those people are now gone, they will still live on through memories that the mosaic holds and proudly shows. (saw a hc that Vash talked to the girls after vol.10 and Milly told Vash that he was a mosaic of those he loved and that they would live on through him or smth like that. it hasn't left my mind since..)
•he also makes music about things that have happened to him on Earth. he wrote a song about the time he found a pretty necklace and he wanted to buy it to give to you, but he had ended up forgetting his wallet so he had go go home. when he got back to the store the necklace was gone and as he was moping, walking through other stores, he found another necklace that he thought was prettier, so he bought it and rushed home to give it to you. very silly song, very dramatic. lots of others like that.
•Once made the most heartfelt, sorrowful song about loss and when you asked him if he's doing alright in response to hearing the song, Vash turns to you with the biggest pout and puppy dog eyes. "I dropped my donut the other day:(" you stare at him as he pouts more, "it was a really good donut!:(("
•he would absolutely make a song based off of Gitchee Gitchee Goo from Phineas and Ferb and dedicate it to you-
•when the twins work together it's a mix of orchestra and edm. at first it was really rough, especially since they were just in the beginning of trying to fix their relationship and Vash was also still trying to find his style with music. there's a lot of clashing between instruments, style and composition. it was really all over the place.
•but over time they've learned how to create their own harmony within their combined chaos. they learn how to smoothly transition from orchestra to edm and combine the two at the same time. (I don't like projecting too much but I can see them making music kinda like how Xtrullor does? like Nirmiti, Samsara, Supernova, Earthsplitter and Ichor specifically)
•sometimes they'll also create a piano piece together and Vash may even write lyrics for the piece.
•also! a few months after they've fully healed they decide to burn the sheet music and files for their first song as a way of finalizing the healing process. as much as the song means to them (especially Vash since he sees it as Nai willing to open up to him,) once it's been deleted it feels very cathartic and they commemorate the beginning of this new chapter with a song that's warm and hopeful
•if you're interested in music in any way, making it, or just learning about it, the twins are happy to help teach you! they'll explain everything that they can and Nai is secretly excited to teach you how to play the piano. (Vash is too but then he realizes just how happy Nai is about you sharing an interest in the piano and let's Nai do most of the teaching.)
•or! if you also make music they'd love to have you work on songs with them! if you're on the fence about for whatever reason, they're begging (Vash with the puppy dog eyes and Nai,, staring at you and trying to discreetly ask for your help) and giving you all the reasons why they'd love to have you work with them and hyping you up.
•doesn't matter what type of style or genre you mainly use, they'll gladly learn how to incorporate with their own styles too. making music with you is one of their favorite things to do.

A Somber New Year
Sigh. I wanted to have my first Wednesday post of the new year to be happy and full of rainbows, but unfortunately the first 25 days of the year have not been the best, especially on the books and education front. As I sit here with the news of another mass shooting in California (my home and specifically Monterey Park where I live) I am reminded that law makers are more interested in making laws prohibiting our right to read whatever we want, whenever we want instead of legislating guns. Needless to say my heart is full of hurt. And anger.
Anger that teachers in Florida are having to put away their carefully curated classroom libraries according to a new law where every single book must be vetted by a librarian. Really? First of all, DeSantis and friends came after the librarians and they are already having to shift around their libraries which is a Herculean task in of itself. Now the government wants them to vet all teachers classroom libraries?  That is virtually impossible as some teachers have spent years building their libraries and have hundreds of books. Plus, if a school has a librarian (and that is a big if as many schools share librarians) when would that librarian find time to vet an entire school’s worth of classroom libraries? The task is impossible which is why this is being done because the real focus is to disrupt and dismantle public education while creating an ignorant populace that doesn’t question their government. A rational thinking mind is a threat to power and DeSantis and friends do not want that. I have teacher friends in Florida and my heart is absolutely breaking for them. I am extremely proud of my small classroom library so I can only imagine how Florida’s teachers are feeling. I feel like this legislation would kill any remaining desire for teaching that I have. We’re already in a teacher shortage and this law could easily cause more teachers to leave the profession. But again, as I said earlier, the destruction of public education is the point.
In addition, the announcement by DeSantis to block the AP African American Studies course because the class had no “educational value” practically broke me. It was a direct hit to the gut as a Black educator. I took Black Studies classes in both my undergrad and graduate schooling and learned so much more than I did in my K-12 education about the influence Black Americans have/had on the creation of America. There is so much information that allowing high school students to take this class as an elective would benefit, nay enrich, their education. I can imagine many Black  (and non-Black) students were looking forward to this class and now they are being deprived of their education. To make an extreme parallel, remember that slaves were prohibited from learning to read in order to keep them subservient. Hmmmm…. What further hurt my heart was DeSantis’s claim that the class had “no educational value”. Sometimes I’m able to shrug off racist comments but this one still hurts days later. To be told that your history, your culture is not worth of study is just so…I don’t even have the words for the hurt. Again, the cruelty and destruction of public education is the point.
Whew…that turned into a whole rant but I feel better now. I’ve been a mess of emotions the past few days, though the bright spots have been the moments of silliness I’ve had with my students in the classroom. They are the reason I am still fighting the good fight. To have an emerging reader show me how much he has read of the book he borrowed from my library counteracts all the hurt and anger I’ve been feeling. One of my goals for my classroom is to instill a love of reading and when my students express joy in reading, education wins. Education has taken so many hits the past few years, but we’ve got to keep fighting because we will win.
*pic is of a small portion of my little classroom library that includes student artwork. I am extremely proud of it.

Let's Predict: Who Will Take Itadori's Side?
(Spoilers for chapter 137 ahead!!!)
Tumblr media
The Shibuya Arc is finally wrapping up and we are transitioning into a new arc that is looking to be just as stressful as the previous arc. Yuta has now been tasked with executing Itadori and he seems keen on going through with it (though there is speculation that he's just saying that to save face). We have no idea of the whereabouts or status of most of the characters, so it's currently unclear how much time has passed or how much everybody else knows abt the situation in Shibuya. And depending on how Gege intends on playing this out, it could be a while until we see the status of our main characters. … Waiting games suck ass. So I say why not make myself look like an idiot and make predictions on who will side with Itadori that are likely wrong in order to pass the time :D ?
This will be split into three groups: "Yea", which will be for Itadori, "Nay”, which will be against Itadori, and “Undecided”. I'll then list the characters along with my reasoning.
YEA:
Megumi Fushiguro
Do I rlly have to explain this one? I mean, if you’ve been paying attention it is very clear that Fushiguro cares deeply for Itadori. His whole shtick is “If you die, I’ll kill you”, so next to siding with Itadori it’s plausible that he could also end up fighting Yuta (or whoever tf threatens Itadori) in order to protect him. I think that while Fushiguro’s feelings on what Itadori did would be complicated, it wouldn’t suddenly make him want to abandon Itadori. Their bond goes much much deeper than that.
Nobara Kugisaki (assuming she’s alive)
Next to Fushiguro, Nobara knows Itadori the most and therefore knows that Itadori isn’t just some murderer who would let this happen voluntarily. She trusts him and cares for him, I don’t think she would just up and leave him at this stage.
Masamichi Yaga
Yaga doesn’t seem the type to just immediately give up, he seems like a stubborn dude. And so with his ass being thrown under the bus by the higher ups, I think he’ll double-down on keeping Itadori alive rather than go against him now that Gojo’s gone.
Panda
Kind of a reach here, but I just think that Panda has made a clear distinction between Itadori and Sukuna, and doesn’t view what Sukuna did as Itadori’s fault.
Aoi Todo
They’re brothers, what more has to be said? Even after Itadori exposed himself and his actions to Todo during the fight with Mahito, Todo raised him up and stayed by his side. Ain’t no way he’s gonna up and abandon him now. (Same goes for Choso, but it’s unclear what’s going to be done with him)
Yuki Tsukumo
I can’t really explain it, just a gut feeling. Based off what we’ve seen of her so far, I just don’t think she would want Itadori dead.
NAY:
Atsuya Kusakabe
Mans made it 100% clear to Panda in an earlier chapter that he had no intention of siding with Itadori and stated that he wants him to executed.
Yoshinobu Gakuganji
Gakuganji literally wanted Itadori dead during the Goodwill Event Arc. And while Yaga and Gojo were able to quell that temporarily during the baseball game, I think the events of the Shibuya Incident give him the perfect reason to advocate for Itadori’s death again.
Mai Zenin
I honestly don’t think she likes Itadori in the first place. Plus before the Goodwill Event she was all like “Aww aren’t you glad Itadori is dead?” to Nobara and Fushiguro and I don’t remember her ever going against that or having a reflection about it like Kamo did so there’s that.
Momo Nishimiya
I think that Momo looks up to Mai a lot and tends to follow in her footsteps. So if Mai’s against Itadori, Momo probably would be too.
Mei Mei
Mei Mei’s whole thing is finding “service potential” in others which is just the future benefits that an asset/person are expected to bring. So with that paired with how things have been hinted to be going economy-wise and assuming that she doesn’t see any benefit to keeping Itadori around, she’ll probably go against him.
Naobito Zenin (assuming he’s alive)
I’m not completely 100% on this one, a lot of it is just the vibe he gives off. Plus I feel that since he wanted Gojo to fall and was glad that he got sealed he’s also fine with Itadori being killed too. He’s one of the higher ups that Gojo was actively fighting against, same goes for Gakuganji.
UNDECIDED:
Noritoshi Kamo
He’s already had his lil mini arc of going from wanting Itadori dead to accepting him as a human being who’s seperate from Sukuna. However, I don’t think he’d be so quick to immediately side with Itadori. He’d probably be a lot more conflicted.
Maki Zenin (assuming she’s alive)
This one was so hard to place!! But I put her here because I believe there’s going to be a tug o war between who to align with, Yuta or Itadori. So, assuming that she’s alive, I think this will be a hard choice for her.
Shoko Ieiri
I just don’t think she gives a fuck tbh,,, whatever happens, happens, that’s the vibe she gives off.
Toge Inumaki
I don’t think we know enough abt him for me to make that call. But it will be interesting to see if we do get a bit of his perspective on things, seeing as though Yuta’s reasoning for wanting to kill Itadori is for Inumaki’s sake.
Utahime Iori
I don’t know enough about her to make a definite call, so she’ll stay in undecided.
Kasumi Miwa
I don’t think she has any strong opinions on Itadori. Like she didn’t want to kill him during the Goodwill Event, but I don’t think that means she doesn’t perceive him as a threat, especially after what happened. So I think she’ll try to stay on the sidelines for this.
Takuma Ino
Don’t know enough again, plus I feel that he’ll be more focused on Nanami’s death than anything else :(
Closing Thoughts:
Even though I’m pretty confident in a lot of my guesses in this list, I could honestly see it going in the other direction too! And with Gege’s constant subversion of expectations I expect my predictions to fall flat like a pancake lmao. But I think that’s part of the joy I get from Jujutsu Kaisen: I love seeing my theories and predictions torn to shreds because Gege always comes up with something even more exciting than whatever I had in mind. So! With that being said, I’m greatly looking forward to what happens next.

Hanging Softly in the Night: A Detective Nick Larson Novel by Maria Elena Alonso-Sierra
Nick Larson is a Detective in the Sixteenth Precinct in Manhattan, New York where he is overworked thanks to the flu epidemic ripping its way through the entire PD, because of this, he and his partner Detective Victor Sacco are drowning in cases, some more easily solved than others, but all as harrowing as the other, it is in the midst of their sixteen plus hour days with little sleep that they are handed a case of a suicide, it beings back dark memories for Nick, but he knows that he has to keep the reactions to them under control. As they approach the crime scene, it looks like a typical suicide by hanging, but when they look deeper into the scene, they see that some things appear a little off, the suicide note is badly written with spelling mistakes and the victim looks too peaceful for the choice of method, there are no last minute attempts to live and the chair below them isn’t tipped over. As they continue looking at the crime scene, they notice other things that don’t quite tally, but there is nothing more that they can do for the moment, so they leave the scene and head into the precinct to write up their notes and get a start on the tedious amount of paperwork awaiting them, as well as dealing with another case which was thrust at them after attending the scene.
While the detectives are rushed off their feet, Laura Howard is preparing yet another piece of artwork for her bakery Les Gateaux Riches, she is doing her best to concentrate on this new creation, but her mind keeps wandering to a certain Detective Larson who helped to catch and put behind bars her twin sister whom up until a year ago, she knew nothing about, but who is now trying her best to ruin her life, work, reputation and everything else from behind bars despite having multiple sanctions and restrictions put on her. It is putting a strain on her and not to mention delaying her attempts at romance with Nick, albeit he is as bad as her for dancing around the edges and not fully saying yay or nay.
As the Detective pry deeper into the life of the suicide victim, more questions than answers surface during the interviews they conduct with her friends and others who know her, to all intensive purposes, she was an angel who didn’t put a foot wrong or keep many close relationships with those around her, apart from a select few and as they haven’t much to go on, things slow down and they look into their other cases, but after a gut feeling, Nick decides to look at similar cases in the New York area and this leads him on another trail where he fears that this is more wide reaching than he originally thought, especially when another suicide is called in which has too many similarities to be a coincidence. Will Nick and Victor be able to solve the crime before any more victims appear, or will they lose the race against time to catch the one responsible? This is a thrilling crime novel with a hint of romance to keep things interesting, it will draw you into the life and work of a New York Detective while you try and figure out the culprit along with the Detectives, it will reel you in hook, line and sinker until you reach its conclusion.

@inferno-principe
inferno-principe
Sidonai had been painstakingly packing his rucksack while Ace was away. It was large, but it could still only carry so many supplies. A few days worth of clothing, a few containers of packaged food from his last trip to the barracks, a canteen each for him and Ace, dressings for his wounds. His sword was packed in his hilt, he was ready to depart once Ace brought the supplements.
He heard footsteps outside the door, assuming it was Ace again, but once he heard the voice from behind it, he froze. That was Kaelon’s voice. Kaelon found him. She found Ace, just as he feared. He began to panic, even more so when the door opened. Luckily it was only his sister.
What the hell did he do? Kaelon was worried about him, she knew something wasn’t right. He knew his handmaiden. When she was concerned about him, she would never let it go, she would push until he allowed her to help him.She wasn’t going to go away easily. Plus, she was a healer, she could help him. But the thought of the fear on her face when she saw his wounds, the terror she’d feel when she saw him packing to leave. Could he do that do her?
“A-Ace…I-I…..I don’t know. I-If I leave her she’ll be terrified. If I tell her…Will she still look at me the same?”
He was startled by another knock at the door, and a shaky voice calling out to him. “Nai, please let me in. I know you’re frightened but let me help you, please. I can help you. No matter what’s going on, I’m here for you. Please, just let me in.”
He couldn’t leave her like that. He couldn’t make her lose someone else she loved. With a deep sigh, he took a few handfuls of supplements from Ace, packing them in their bag. “…..tell her the truth.”
Ace wanted to argue that it was Kaelon, she would never judge Sidonai like that. But she couldn’t tell that with certainty of course. A bigger concern was that Kaelon would freak out and try to stop them from executing their plan. The maid would want Sidonai to stay here, where he was safe and could be cared for. She could treat his wounds better here, with plenty of supplies around. For these reasons she hesitated to tell Kaelon.
She never got a chance to tell this to her brother however, as Kaelon knocked on the door again, still desperate to get inside so she could see for herself what was going on. And as Sidonai took the supplements from her arms, he told her to share the truth with the maid.
It took Ace a moment to actually heed his words, her mind occupied with figuring out how to even tell Kaelon. Once she gathered her guts, she finally she opened the door to face Kaelon, a guilty expression on her face.
“Kae... You should come in and hear the truth. Nai isn’t really sick, there’s something else...” Which she would begin to explain once the maid was inside and Ace could close the door again. It was important that no one else heard this. Kaelon could be trusted, but others might come in or eavesdrop and tattle on them to Asmodeus.
She took a deep breath, thinking about her wording one last time, before she continued in a hushed voice: “So you know Nai is being sent to battle soon... but we just know he’s not going to survive that, so we’re... leaving. For Earth, to find his mom. She’s our one hope of stopping this, and we may have a lead as to where she is. We uhm... we didn’t mean to worry you, but... the less people who know where we’ll be, the safer. Sooo... that’s why I needed the supplements... Please don’t tell anyone.”
Ace purposely left out the part of Sidonai’s injuries, in case her brother didn’t want Kaelon to know about them. They were a very touchy subject. And if he did wish to share that knowledge with her, then it was best if he did that himself.

I saw ‘Knives Out’ a week ago and I’m still reeling
I saw ‘Knives Out’ a week ago and I’m still reeling. This movie is fun and I simply won’t talk to anyone who disagrees! I don’t want to argue about its merits. It’s good.
Your issue is, I presume, an issue with what the film says about the upper class. Go on, sympathize for the horrible, rich family that represents all that is ugly with America. Feel bad for the racist gargoyles who are equal parts human and checking account. These people are snobs. They are snob dumpster fires and if you didn’t have fun roasting them then you and I are on different sides of the war.
What war you ask? I guess I’ll call it the culture war (though that’s not really it). I’m talking about the current (unannounced) civil war between those who think Trump is getting unfairly maligned and us, the ones who are looking back on this shameful era ten years down the line, explaining to our kids what the fuck happened in 2019. This is bad. Art should make fun of us. Our obsession with fame and fortune has gotten us into global laughing stock territory. So let’s allow for art to poke fun as the bullshit of America. Art should be a reflection of our ugly parts. We all must look in the mirror when we try on a bathing suit. This is that. I choose not to place blame on the world for my muffin top. It’s funny. I’m gonna still have fun with this muffin, and this film, even if it doesn’t make me feel amazing. Laughing at yourself exorcises the demons. We still need art to encourage our spiritual progress. Don’t be such a stick in the mud.
So, now that I’ve sorted that out, the film...
It’s good.
Now let’s focus on the acting which is, arguably, always my favorite part of any movie.
Didn’t we all revel in the Yosemite Sam impression Daniel Craig was doing with New Orleans private investigator, Benoit Blanc? Wasn’t Lakeith Stanfield playing the slightly oblivious police detective while his partner fangirled over Christopher Plummer a treat?
It was.
In a society so obsessed with celebrity, it was especially delightful to watch the investigators reckon with people who simply did not believe they had to play by the rules. They don’t have to partake in police questioning. They have people for that!
Only, they do have to partake in police questioning and their lack of experience in dealing with authority figures, like the police, made them particularly horrible witnesses. They quite enjoyed a wonderfully anonymous type of wealth, free from press and the quotidian boredom of bosses, day jobs, rules...you get it. The Thrombey’s do not handle inconvenience very well.
As a result, we delight in their misfortune. This move dripped with Agatha Christie meets Succession realness. Plus subtle notes of Rupaul’s Drag Race camp.
Yes, I admit, Benoit Blanc is no Hercule Poirot. All these mystery purists coming for ‘Knives Out’ best fall back with those comparisons because it’s simply unfair. Christie’s number one Belgian is too good for mere mortals to emulate. And Daniel Craig tried very, very hard to give you an iconic detective character. Was it goofy and weird? Yes. Let’s all agree to move on.
And the moving on is a larger lesson here. Because only when you surrender to this film does it reveal all its gifts to you. Once you stop comparing it to all the other stories you hold so dear does it grow into its own animal. It’s a mystery for the age in which we find ourselves. I will not slander the p.c. police because, hell, I’m sort of one of them. Social justice warrior is not an insult that rustles my feathers. Interestingly, this film joins the SJW’s alongside the Stephen Miller’s of the world. White privilege is white privilege. And, unfortunately, the Thrombey’s, both young and old, liberal and conservative, are victims of their privilege. So blind to the plight of others, they can not help but make themselves the heroes of their own story. And people don’t like the thought that they, like the film’s youngest SJW of the family, Katherine Langford, could be part of the problem. And yet, she is. She so is.
Langford delivers a knockout performance of Taylor Swift-level white feminism that is so 2019 and clueless that I imagine many people even missed the joke.
Along those same lines, Chris Evans is the playboy, black sheep of the family who seems misunderstood and sexy but, spoiler alert, is just conniving and sexy.
Both performances were stellar and so deeply entrenched in modern white identity politics that if you’re not paying attention you might assume that their characters are just your standard rich villains. Nay. These are the “good white people” who are behaving badly. These are the white people who donate to charities and hire undocumented workers like Ana de Armas’ character, Marta. They are people who listen to rap music and love ‘Insecure’ and took an African-American studies class in college. And yet, they demand attention and emotional labor from the (employed) people around them. They distort proximity with closeness and try to lure Marta into their world. But she always knows better. For whatever reason, she can not trust these people, even before Harlan’s death.
Rian Johnson directs with a certain je ne sais quoi. Call it a ‘BDE’ that I would not expect from such a dweeby looking dweeb. Yes, ‘Knives Out’ has a fun enough story. But it really shows the fuck out is with its performances. Holy moly. No small roles, only small actors, as the saying goes. Yet in the case of ‘Knives Out’ you will find neither. Everybody is a god damn star. You should know that I stan Chris Evans but, as it turns out, this film begs you to worship its entire cast. So I did.
‘Knives Out’ is a star-making performance for Ana de Armas. If you hadn’t heard, de Armas garnered a Golden Globe nod and it is well-deserved. Armas’ Marta is a nuanced, funny, sensitive, conspirator in a plot that could’ve isolated the audience but instead put us smack dab in the middle of a moral quagmire.
Only the best actors can pull this off. Lesser actors have us turn against them while they flounder. Marta’s role in the family drama is as an outsider. In spite of their insistence that she is one of them, she keeps her distance, only clinging to Harlan. She fell for Chris Evans’ charms briefly, and I applaud Rian Johnson for avoiding a romance between the two (we didn’t need it) and focusing instead on the emotional betrayal. Marta was a woman with her head screwed on straight. In spite of her, possible, nursing fumbles she was the only kind person Harlan had in his life. She would never risk her loyalty to him by engaging in some foolishness with Chris Evans’ hunky ass.
And I repeat, I don’t care about your thoughts regarding inheritance. It is silly to contest that Marta deserved nothing less than the full sum of the fortune (*spoiler*). She deserved everything. She deserved an existence in this country free from citizenship anxiety. She deserved a partner who loved her. She deserved a friend who didn’t kill himself to save her ass. Least of all, she deserved Chris Evans’ character to be better. But, he was a product of his shitty family. How could he be better?
Three names: Jamie. Lee. Curtis. I need her in at least seven to twelve projects in the coming year. She is a stand out among stand outs. She serves up the quintessential performance of a cold-hearted bitch that is so likeable that I will patiently await the spin-off. I need to know where her Linda Drysdale is now. If anyone in the family was able to land on their feet it was Linda. We all know it.
Linda was the only Thrombey child who had the guts to make it without a handout. Her loser husband, played by the ever-handsomer Don Johnson, was practically useless. Her loser brother, played by the unusually diminutive Michael Shannon, was the same. Her sister in law, played by the illustrious Toni Collette, had her head so far up her own ass that even Gwyneth Paltrow would blush.
Poor Linda. She was surrounded by idiots. I hope she’s doing ok.
And now, we’re at the end. I’ve tried my best to avoid any horrible spoilers. But I’ve also taken a deep dive into SJW’s so I might’ve gotten off track along the way...
In any event, this movie is good. And I can’t wait to see it again.

Lost and Found
Orlaux Voss, once dee Dzemael, has spent the past twenty years searching high and low through dangerous lands looking for his hope. After the fall of Ala Mhigo, and the death of his wife Maerwynn, his missing Daughter (and unknown to him, Warrior of Light) Danica in hopes that even with the two of them, family and home can be found again.
AKA Welcome to My Adventure in making my Main's Dad first a retainer and then an Alt and now he's demanding fiction explaining how he found his Daughter that I'm too willing to write. For the most part is just Noir Lancer Dad.
Archive Link
Chapter One:  Hope Thine Name is Wyrmblood
It started simple enough. A strange lancer much like myself, so very far from home, half swallowed by his cup in a bar seedier than a pomegranate. White hair, grey eyes, exhaustion of something greater than war written across his face, I had half the mind to try to get his story but what he said damped curiosity's flame.
“You’re eyes. Familiar.” He murmured more into his ale than to me. I tensed, normally such declarations are punctuated by blades to my gut. My mask of indifference, honed from years in Ishgard and once again in use since the fall of my dearest Ala Mhigo, gave no outward sign of my fear, only raising a single eyebrow in query. When he didn’t continue, I cautiously goaded my foe.
“Oh? Strange.” I laughed, my cup to my lips, thankful my hands didn’t betray the thoughts in my mind by shaking. God’s it had been years since I had dealt with any of my families assassins, I had hoped they had finally left me to my own devices. “Most of the time I’ve been told they’re freakishly unique. Gold and Green as they are.”
The stranger dropped his eyes from me to his glass, his fingers tightening around it, twisting it aimlessly as the bartender did everything he could to avoid both of us. For good reason, I imagine. We both look the part of the angry loner, he more than I honestly. I leaned back, my glass empty, and slide gil across the counter, hoping eventually the bartender will risk serving us for the glinting gold on the table.
“What’s familiar about them?” I probed once again. “I don’t recall ever meeting you before ser...” I let the words hang in the air, and attempted to give a reassuring smile. He didn’t look up to see it, but he did shake his head.
“Estinien. Estinien Wyrmblood.”  He looked back at me, finally, but pointedly avoids looking me in the eye. Uncomfortable. Cornered. A state I’ve been in before, but I needed to know where he’s seen these strange mismatched eyes before. I needed to know if this twenty year vigil was at an end, without a body to bury on the other side. Did dare I hope? Yes. Hopes all that's kept me going over the years.
“Well then Ser Wyrmblood, I’m Orlaux. Lovely to make your acquaintances, but that still doesn’t answer my question.” I cracked a smile, the one that wins me jobs and pays my tabs, and prevents people from asking for my surname. He seemed to relax a bit. The gears in his mind turning slowly. Figuring how much he wanted to tell a stranger, smart boy really, tired and more world weary than he should be but smart all the same. I would have been lying if I said I wasn’t trying to figure out the exact amount myself. Dangerous to overshare. Dangerous to undershare.
“I’ve seen them before, but on someone else.” Words fell from his lips like slow melting ice, setting me on edge even as I was grateful for the progress. He ran a nervous hand through his hair, and grimaced as it caught on some knot. “A friend of mine. Better than I deserve. Defended me. Saved my life.”
Saved his life ey? My mind tried to connect the last image I had of my daughter with an older, wiser, and kinder woman. Perhaps a healer, or guard, or perhaps she’d follow after her mother and pick up a rapier and venture. Someone out there helping the world.  I could not help but crack a smile, and my mask, at such a thought. “Oh? What’s her name? Perhaps I have some heroic cousin I should be bragging to my family about.”
He tensed, and I immediately knew I’ve overstepped something, slipped up somehow. This time it was he who got defensive, snapping his eyes towards mine and squinting with all the rage he can muster, or at least that he can contain in his moderately inebriated state. I could smell the booze coming off of him even before I sat next to him and heard his murmuring about my eyes. He went to open his mouth, but was stopped by the approach of the bartender, who sweeps up my gil and goes to refill us both.
“Or their name, or his name, though from memory most of my venturing’ cousins prefer feminine pronouns.” I covered my own ass with a half hearted lie. I doubt a sober companion would have bought them, but hopefully a drunken one did. It’s hard to tell with the permanent scowl on this Estinien’s face.  He didn’t look at me again, instead, turning his gaze to his own reflection in his cup, colored gold by the liquor inside. I could have counted this out as a failed lead, nothing more than the drunken ramblings of a lonely Dragoon, when he spoke again.
“She doesn’t have any family,” His words once more to himself more than to me, “Hasn’t for a long time.” He shakes his head hair falling in front of his eyes, blocking his own reflection, and exhales audibly. I watched him carefully, while attempting not to appear as if I was doing so. Failing terrible honestly, but thankfully he was too enthralled by his drink to notice. “Plus, you don’t strike me as a Mhigan, not with a spear like that. What took you out of Ishgard?”
He looked up, and I caught him taking a glance at a black scarf tied around the neck of his own spear, instead of mine, as he tried to redirect the questions away from himself. A ragged little thing, more grey than truly black anymore, with a time worn symbol of the Destroyer embroidered onto it. I gritted my teeth and think, deciding to leave my answer up to fate and down my drink instead of replying.
“Ala Mhigo did.” Honesty, I always told her to be Honest, best practice what I preach. “A Wanderer in Red stole something from, not something I wanted back, but something I was willing to follow her for.” The thought of my stolen love, my dearest Maerwynn, stalls my tongue for but a second. I blinked, even though I know I’ve no more tears to hold, and feel naught but the hollow ache in my chest.
“Wanderer in Red...” He repeated after me, sitting up right, making his own choices, hearing some familiar in my words. “They tend to do that, don’t they?”  He faced me and gave me a once over I’m too busy wishing away my memories to notice. I traced the scar on my face absently, cursing its very existence. Perhaps, perhaps if it wasn’t there and I had been at home the Garleans would have never gotten to her. To either of them.
“Her name is Danica,” His words snap me from my self pity, and I can’t stop my eyes from going wide. I feel my heart skip a beat and hope course through my veins like oxygen. A breath of fresh air in my face after years, nay, decades of stagnation. My rational mind tried to will this away, at least to a reasonable level, but my heart is so overcome with joy I cannot help but show it on my face. I fear the smile may unsettle, but in fact it seemed to relax him. A curiosity for another day, another night of pondering. He looked away, back to his drink, sadly finding it empty.
I need to know more. This name, this dearest matching name. Eyes like mine. A Hero, a friend. My mind moved faster than it could possibly make coherent sentences, in the end I blurted out my next question with such force Estinien jumps a bit.
“Where is she?”
Startled, he blinked, and I once again fear I had faltered. I glanced to the bartender, though I know fate isn’t keen on giving second chances, let alone thirds, and then to him. Finding the red face of someone who truly three sheets to the wind. “Last I saw her she was in Ishgard. Tired, Happy that the Dragonsong war didn’t claim another of her friends.”
And what once was boiling blood, filled with hope and joy and images of being reunited with a daughter I’ve searched so damn long for freezes in my veins.
Ishgard.
Of course she had to be in fucking Ishgard. She had to be within stabbing distance of my family, she had to be in danger. She had to be where if I was seen, I’d be chased out with pitchforks and torches bought with nobles money or worse. Branded a heretic and executed in some fun and brutal way where accepting my death would prove my innocence. A land even more dangeorus for me than fucking Garlemald.
Yet. I would still go.
Even for the chance, the hope, that his Danica and my Dani were one in the same. That I’d walk into the Forgotten Knight decades after I last left it and see my daughter enjoying a fine evening surrounded by friends and those who care for her and see her smile up at me again like when she was small and asking for bedtime stories about heroes and dragons. Even if she wasn’t with friends, even if she was alone, even if she didn’t recognize me in the slightest.
Alive. Just Alive would do.
I stood from the bar and tapped the newest of Ishgards expatriots on the shoulder in thanks. Though I doubt he knew the weight his words had had on me. He barely looked over his shoulder to me as I departed without so much as a word. A rudeness, but one I felt was needed when my own words could not be trusted to hide my truths in such a state or joy and fear.
I had much to consider and plan, in the relative safety of my inn room, but found no such purchase as I laid my head down. The wine and memories overtaking me into a realm of sleep that for once, seemed not so dark.

The Voyage Part I ft. Mai Takeda and Asande Stormborn
Tumblr media
The wind seemed to run past her which brought a smile to Mai’s small pink lips. She pushed some of her apple red hair behind her ear and just remained motionless against the side of the boat watching the waters pass them by. She lost herself in the moment so much she didn’t register the newcomer’s presence beside her.
“Fuckin’ hell of a thing, eh?” Asande Stormborn said in her songlike but strong voice. “The waters that is. Nothin’ like sailin’ upon the waters. Don’t think even ridin’ in the clouds can compare. Tis the reason I am savin’ coin in buyin’ a second ship for the seas and not one of expensive things in the clouds. Let that be some others. I belong on the waters.”
Mai turned her head to the captain of The Stormdancer. She had a hard time saying she met one like this captain. Well, when she thought on it, that wasn’t precisely true. She held many similarities to her twin brother, Kaelivh, who also served to be Mai’s teacher and trainer. She also had similar qualities to that of Mai’s lost love, Veda.
The memory brought pain to wipe away at Mai’s smile. Sadness took her almost immediately. She had not heard from the one she had been certain to be a fixture in her life in so many weeks now that she refused to keep counting the days that rushed by. Wetness seemed to form in her eyes on her own and before she knew it Asande’s voice break into her thoughts again.
“Thinkin’ on her again?” Asande said. “Yer lover that is? Or the one who was or whatever the damned thing ye have now.”
“Always a way of putting things in poetic fashion, San’s,” Mai said with a small sad sigh though a light smile touched the words. “B-but yes. Sometimes it’s hard not to. I mean, I know I have so many seasons turn ahead of me at my age and I am only now experiencing and living my life and finding my way and my path. And I know that I have so many things ahead of me and new people that will come into my life. I also know that--”
“That ya ramble so damn much that ya can power the Dancer cross these waters on that energy alone?” Asande interjected.
Mai’s mouth audibly clamped shut. A blush warmed her cheeks shyly followed by a nod. She sheepishly began to open her mouth when a cry sounded out.
“Sail ho! Ship starboard!” the male youth clamored from the crow’s nest.
Tumblr media
Asande and Mai snapped their heads in the specified direction. The ship was nothing more than a speck in the distance without the spyglass The Stormdancer’s spotter held but it was enough to get Asande’s muscles tensing. Mai glanced the older highlander woman’s direction and her eyes widened. For on that face she saw a devilish grin coming to the other woman’s lips.
“The game it is!” Asande announced pushing from the rail. “Ye might get the chance at puttin’ that blade of yers to work,” she said to Mai. “Wit me.”
Mai nodded, her hand falling to the handle of the katana at her hip before trailing Asande. The two women hurried along the now busying deck headed for the helm. The movement along the deck would seem chaotic to outside eyes, Mai knew, because she thought the same. When she looked more intently on the movements she realized that had not been the case. Everyone moved with a purpose and no one seemed to ever get in the way of another. Their movements were practiced and in sync that spoke well of the crew she had gotten to know over the many days.
“Helmsman!” Asande barked. “Move us three clicks starboard!”
Mai gawked at Asande. “Th-that will take us toward them!”
“Yer damned right!” Asande said still wearing the grin turning her head upwards to the crow’s nest. “Ye got a sail?”
“Looks like The Black Orchid, Captain!” the youth responded.
“Well shite. Didn’t expect that.” Asande glanced Mai’s direction and noticed the expression. “The captain of that one is a good sort. Coin chasin’ bloke but no salt water in his noggin’ so why he comin’ our way I have no word. He know The Black Orchid can’t take Stormdancer. Get my damn mages up!” Asande barked.
“We’re here, Cap,” a Midlander with a dusky skin said in a tired voice with another standing beside him. “Though why wake me when you can handle what it is to come without me I no idea. Rather sleep myself.”
Asande rolled her eyes and swiftly smacked the man on the back of the head. “Yer always sleepin’! Damned man will sleep his life away if I let ye. Get to your positions. I may not have time to go slingin’ aether ‘round myself. Sometimes the fun is in close and personal like.”
The man gave a groggy nod while rubbing the back of his head before walking off. Asande watched them go without the grin slipping from her face. Her hand went to her opposite hip of her rapier and pulled out her own spyglass. She extended the cylinder and looked starboard marking the pace and direction of the ship.
Tumblr media
“Oh that bastard is comin’ for us alright. Intersect course indeed. He got the swifter sails wit a bit of wind plus I know the mages he has ‘bout his girl there that give it a bit more push than my louts. Probably could outpace her wit the lead we got but what fun in that, eh?”
Mai found herself gawking at the taller woman again. “Y-you’re as bad as your brother!”
Asande laughed at that while returning her spyglass. She clapped Mai on the shoulder. “Yer ‘bout to learn what dealin’ with the Stormborn is like little Mai. Wet yer blade a bit too but if somethin’ happen to ya that damn brother of mine will have my hide. We watch each other backs, right? Just remember what Kael taught ye and some o’words I sprinkled in. It’ll be fun.”
Numbly, Mai nodded, her grip tightening on the hilt. I take it back. She’s WORSE than her brother, Mai thought. She’s insane!
“Raise the red, Cap’n?” a voice called out from no direction Mai could discern.
“Nay! When we near a we’ll run one ‘cross the bow and then meet. I know the bastard. He’s likely to give quarter if the coin is right.” Asande turned her gaze to Mai. “Though don’t know how our cargo is worth it. Not to take wit Dancer.”
“You’re thinking he’s after something else?” Mai asked while feeling the sweat forming on her brow. “I-I haven’t taken a life with my sword sin-since the bandits on the way to my father and brother’s grave. I-”
“Ye’ll be fine, lass,” Asande said with a reassuring smile. “Ye been trainin’ wit my brother and he’s a damned killer in his own right. Yer goin’ to be surprised in what he got in yer head. Believe me. Keep to who yer are, feel the fight ‘round ye and all will be well. Be wit ye every step. Just remember the bastards will take ye and do what they will if ye let them. Can’t have that. Kael will curse us both and come to our rescue. Then I’ll have to hear ‘bout the shite for all days. Let’s be ‘bout it, shall we?”
Taking a deep steadying breath Mai gave an affirming nod despite the knots tying themselves in her gut. She remembered her training with her father and brother when she was younger. She remembered watching Veda swinging her axe and their sparring session. She remembered her lessons from Kaelivh Stormborn and intensity of their training and fights. Even Asande had taught her some things and the Stormdancer’s boatswain.
“I am ready,” she announced in a small yet confident voice more for herself than any other ears.
OOC Notation! This is a collab piece by myself and some person! They aight and I decided to let them hitch onto my--what? Okay, okay! This was a joint effort with Big Z! @zhauric though he’s the main writer :-p I was a bit lazy on images and gifs. Wasn’t easy. Sowwy! Need to take some new ones! More to come! And Mai’s name came first because I’m cuter. I mean my nickname is Candy and his is Bear and Deuce??? Get real!
P.S. @nattaitshanil We know you can write! You getting in this too with the next chapter! Be prepared! Always on the prowl for more too!

About metrics, objectivity and Te: I have typed myself as a Ti dom because my approach to solve problems/understand things seem to fit it, but something has been bothering me. That Mr ENTJ post about Te vs Ti (links aren't accepted) is a good example. Because the Ti way doesn't make nay sense to me. I don't know whether it's really biased and lacks understanding of Ti because the author is a TJ, or whether I'm not a Ti user after all. I'm an aspiring performer and while I'm perfectionist 1/3
and strive to be the best and study/train a lot I do it mainly because of my own standards and my passion. I've always been totally aware that being the best means very little in not only my field, but many others. Networking, nepotism, bribery, charisma, physical appearance, communication skills, titles: all these and more trump plain knowledge and technical talent. I'm mostly ok with that, I can see why those things are valid, can be affected by those as well. I think that whining about 2/4
how "unfair" things are is missing the point, and useless. As technical minded as I am (I spot mistakes a mile away and they bother me) I still judge success solely by numbers and objective impact. How much did it sell, what was the final profit, how many views, what ranking etc, also about how much people commented on it, the influence it had. It doesn't matter how good it is, numbers don't lie and if you don't have those, you flopped. It greatly annoys me when people refuse to accept this. 3/4
I thought it's because I'm a 3, but the more I see Te/Ti comparisons I can never side with Ti and that baffles me. It just mostly sounds divorced from reality or like it undervalues it. I though I preferred Ti because my speculation/theories don't hit a "that's not what science says" wall like Te does, I question the "Te God" statistics and I enjoy analyzing/breaking down things for fun (and I think acquiring understanding give you power). Thoughts? Is that Mr ENTJ post accurate? 4/4
-------------------------------------------
I’m assuming this is the relevant post.
Some of this might be sensing (if you typed yourself as an INTP or ENTP...you are almost certainly not one). However, STPs and ESTPs sometimes mistype as STJs because while they love figuring things out for their own sake they also appreciate the realities of the situation and objective evidence. In fact, socionics attributes some things to Se that MBTI groups in Te - there’s a lot of overlap between the two. I think Mr. ENTJ does have a pretty good understanding of Te (he likely has some bias in favor of Te; most high Te users do have a lot of frustrations with Ti, myself included, but that doesn’t mean we don’t understand how it works) but I also think it’s possible that your attitude could come from high Se accepting the reality of the situation. (Also, perhaps I’m idealistic or just in a hard STEM field where your school matters less but while it’s undoubtedly true going to a name-brand school provides people with additional opportunities, in many fields you still need to bring some talent to the table as well).
However, I think your understanding of Te might be limited and you could be a Te user. As mentioned, I’m literally a scientist, and Te doesn’t just end arguments in “that’s not what science says” because science itself is often in disagreement. Te is still open to debate and to learning things for fun - it just is more selective, and more interested in getting things done on time and on budget rather than as elegantly as possible. A healthy high Te user is willing to say “I know this doesn’t handle every contingency, but for our purposes it should be good enough and a method that would handle every contingency would be prohibitively expensive/take too long/require resources we are unlikely to have”. Ti is less willing to do that. I’m also not sure what “ ‘Te God’ statistics” means.
I can’t tell from this question whether you’re a Ti or Te user (although speaking of weird gut feelings and writing style, plus a 3 core, you sound more extroverted to me though a particularly forceful IxTJ is not out of the question), but I’d recommend you first consider ESTP, ENTJ, and ESTJ as possibilities.

8 Things to Know About the Meat And Cancer Debate
Have you heard about the meat and cancer debate? Does eating meat increase your risk of cancer? Read this article to get the best answers.
Pop question: Does Meat Cause Cancer?
The jury is out: Meat—good or bad?  The vegan and vegetarian camps say “Nay!,” the meat lovers say, “Yay!” Who is right? Moreover…does meat really cause cancer? Read on to find out what the research says.
The Great Meat And Cancer Debate
The great meat debate has been an ongoing source of conflict between varying groups for the past 20 years—particularly since the release of the famous “China Study” book, published in 2005, often cited as the leading authority on the reasons to NOT eat meat.
In it, the authors explain the 1980’s “China Project” research study in layman’s terms, concluding that that people should eat a predominantly plant-based diet—excluding animal products (including beef, pork, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, and milk), processed foods and refined carbs—in order to avoid, reduce, and reverse the development of numerous diseases.
The truth? There really are lots of studies out there linking meat consumption (especially red meat) to cancer.
Regardless of the type of meat consumed (organic, grass-fed, etc.), researchers have uncovered several components linking cancer with meat that have nothing to do with what an animal eats, hormone or antibiotic exposure.
However, does this link actually mean that meat causes cancer, or is there something else that sets the stage for meat to cause cancer?
10 Things You Need to Know About the Meat & Cancer Debate
(These are the things that most news headlines won’t tell you).
1. Cancer is an Autoimmune Disease (Anti-Inflammatory Foods are Best)
Call it cancer, Lupus, Hashimoto’s, Celiac disease, or any one of the other 100+ autoimmune diseases now classified by the CDC, all autoimmune diseases share a common link—your body is attacking itself (autoimmune response). What causes this autoimmune response in the first place? Inflammation, or “stress.”
Inflammation and stress are interchangeable terms in the autoimmune disease presentation. Anything that causes inflammation is a “stress” to your body—setting you up for the perfect storm of autoimmune disease (i.e. body attacking itself). Stress goes far beyond mental stress. It includes things like:
Toxins in the cleaning & hygiene products
Tap water consumption
Lack of sleep
High screen & light exposure
Lack of exercise or too much exercise
Longterm medication use or antibiotic use
Pesticides on fruits & veggies
Gut irritating foods (high intake of grains, sugar, processed, hydrogenated oilsor refined foods)
Hormones & antibiotics in meats and dairy
Lack of balance in the diet
Gut dysfunction (low stomach acid, low digestive enzymes)
Given these facts, high meat consumption can certainly be a source of inflammation for some people—particularly depending on the type of meat consumed (organic vs. conventional); a lack of veggies in the diet; or low stomach acid (that helps digest the meat in the first place). However, as noted above, meat is NOT the only source of inflammation in the body connected to stress and disease.
Essentially, any time we lack balance (such as lacking nutrient-dense foods in our diet) stress and inflammation happens.Other examples of dietary stressors that trigger inflammation for some people may include:
High amounts of raw and cruciferous vegetables
FODMAPS are difficult for some people to digest and break down—especially those with SIBO, IBS or gut issues.
Whole Grains
Unfortunately, most of the grains sold in the U.S. today are highly processed, pseudo-versions of grains, filled with enriched flours, fillers, sugar and oils; or not properly soaked or sprouted, containing heavy amounts of phytates and lectins (1) that our digestive tract cannot break down.
Sugar & Artificial Sweeteners
Sugar feeds cancer cells (2). Artificial sugar is not much better, correlated with tumors and various forms of cancer in multiple studies cited by the National Cancer Institute (3).
High Fat without enough greens—
For those with a sluggish, under-functioning, liver-gallbladder, fatty foods can be more difficult to digest—particularly in the face of low green and veggie intake (4, 5). (No, fat is not bad for you, but if you, once again, lack balance then inflammation risk is higher)
In short: Cancer is an inflammatory autoimmune disease that is triggered when your body encounters various inflammation and stressors. Certain dietary triggers (like poor quality meat consumption, or lack of veggies with your proteins) may be more “inflammatory” to some people, whereas other stressors, (such as lack of sleep and smoking) are more present and inflammatory for others.
The Bottom Line:
Focus on an anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense diet to fight off cancer. (And yes, protein can be included).
2. Leaky Gut is a Root of Cancer
Hippocrates said it best: “All disease begins in the gut.”“Leaky Gut” and an unhealthy gut microbiome is another common link that all autoimmune diseases—including cancer—share (6, 7, 8, 9).Unfortunately, for a long time, debates over “what causes cancer” have been heavily weighted at particular foods and lifestyle stressors, such as meat, smoking and lack of fruits and veggies (10). However, valid or not ,the root cause is often missed in all these studies, claims and debates—leaky gut. This cancer debate needs answer.
Your gut is the gateway to your health! If your digestive tract and gut microbiome are unhealthy, then you are LESS likely to digest and absorb your nutrients properly to feed the rest of your organs and cells.
Additionally, in the case of “leaky gut,” food particles and foreign proteins from the foods you eat seep into your bloodstream, undigested, where your body’s immune defense system then attacks itself to get those proteins out of there (i.e. “autoimmune response” or “autoimmune disease”). If this happens continually, over time, this autoimmune attack wreaks havoc on your health, resulting in various autoimmune disease presentations or symptoms. In functional medicine we say, “Genetics load the gun, BUT environmental factors (diet, gut health and lifestyle) pull the trigger.”
The Bottom Line:
You may have the genetics for cancer or other health conditions, but only when other environmental factors are “stressed” (like your gut health) is when that cancer presents itself. We still have a lot to learn about the influence of the microbiome on health and disease, but we know enough already to conclude that the gut-disease link is significant. Many people are talking about this during cancer debate.
Do you have a “leaky gut?” Find out here, plus insider tips on how to fix it here.
3. Stomach Acid is Crucial
Stomach acid is essential for the digestion of food—especially protein (10, 11). Your stomach acid has a pH of 1.5-3.5 on a total 14 point scale (translation: It’s HIGHLY acidic). Unfortunately, stomach acid deficiency is common in people due to high amounts of stress humans have adapted to today. Examples of stressors that wreak havoc on your stomach acid levels include:
Long term medication use
NSAID/steroid use
Antibiotic use
Lack of prebiotic fiber and probiotic rich foods
Not chewing your food well
Eating on the go or distracted
Overtraining
Lack of sleep
And, yes, even high amounts of mental stress
Stomach acid, also known as “hydrochloric acid,” is essential for the break down of all foods, but particularly proteins.
Without enough stomach acid, proteins in foods can pass into the rest of the GI tract only partially broken down and digested from the stomach—making effective digestion even more challenging throughout your small and large intestine.
The result? Increased likelihood of leaky gut, and other gut-related issues correlated with an unhealthy gut microbiome and disease (including cancer) (13). Interestingly, several studies show that people with long-term PPI medications use (drugs that “boost” stomach acid) experience up to a six-fold risk for getting cancer (14, 15). Why? These drugs essential decrease your natural stomach acid production.
The Bottom Line:
Meat itself may not be the culprit of cancer, but instead an unhealthy gut microbiome and low stomach acid that was unable to break down your meat in the first place.
4. Meat Studies Don’t Necessarily Use “Healthy” Controls
Given that 1 in 2 Americans already have a chronic disease in our country, are studies with “average” controls of the population really all that healthy? While syndromes and diseases like IBS, acne, allergies, anxiety, constipation, pre-diabetes and more may be considered “healthy,” “normal,” or “average” in our society, these issues typically signify something else (health related) is going on under the hood—especially gut health and hormone related.
The Bottom Line:
When interpreting a study that claims “meat causes cancer,” or “carbs cause weight gain,” or even “broccoli causes cancer,” ALWAYS question: Who were the test subjects? What was their current lifestyle, diet and gut health like? There’s often more to the story than meets the eye.
5. Meat Contains Carcinogens (& So Do Plants)
Compounds in meats (salts, nitrates, nitrites, heme iron, saturated fat with toxins in the fat cells, estradiol) have been theorized to increase DNA synthesis and cell proliferation, increase insulin-like growth factors, affect hormone metabolism, promote free radical damage, and produce carcinogenic heterocyclic amines—all of which may promote the development of cancer (16). However, these components, prevalent in many processed and conventional meats are not prevalent in sustainably-raised, grass-fed, pastured and local meats.
The Bottom Line:
Bad quality meat (17) is linked to cancer (think: processed and conventional)—and so are carcinogens in fruits and veggies (i.e. Roundup, pesticides, etc.) (18).
6. You Need Greens with Your Meat
The “problem” with high meat diets—or even cancer and meat studies—is that often times, these studies LEAVE OUT the OTHER important components to the human diet, digestion and absorption—particularly fiber!Fiber (19), found in veggies and fruits, is essential for “pushing food” through your digestive tract and also helping probiotics (good gut bacteria) stick in your gut (20, 21).
No wonder inflammation happens in meat studies! And many are taking about in in any cancer debate. The same thing goes for high-fat diet studies, where participants tend to leave out the whole-food carbs (i.e. greens), and opt for the standard American diet—full of hydrogenated oils, proteins, and refined processed foods and carbs. Duh, inflammation will happen.
The Bottom Line:
Get your veggies on! Bonus: Incorporate fermented foods into your diet daily.
7. Meat Variety is Essential (Just Like Fruit & Veggie Variety is Essential)
Red meat has long been touted as the “bad meat”—highest connected to cancer. However, in consideration of ALL the other facts we’ve addressed, red meat is simply the most often studied in meat studies (perhaps due to the bad rep it also has gotten over the years for “causing heart disease” and high cholesterol—however, these claims have also been debunked) (22).
The bigger “culprits” than red meat vs. chicken vs. fish? Ask yourself these questions: Question 1: How is my gut health and stomach acid for breaking my meat down in the first place?Question 2: How is my meat and food variety in general?Question 3: Where is my meat source from? (Grass-fed, organic and sustainable raised or full of hormones and antibiotics?). This are the common questions when it comes to meat and cancer debate.
Just like it would be “unhealthy” to eat grapes and iceberg lettuce for your only sources of fruits and veggies every day; and just like it would be “unhealthy” to fuel up on a heavy dose of Roundup (a pesticide) in your fruits and veggies, the same thing goes for red meat.
The Bottom Line:
Red meat itself is not “bad”—it’s all about the context. Boost stomach acid with apple cider vinegar or HCL tablets at meals; opt for a grass-fed cut of meat; and vary up your proteins often (beef, chicken, fish, turkey, etc.)
8. Whole Grains, Iceberg Lettuce & Vegan Ice Cream Can ALSO “Cause Cancer”
It’s no secret: Processed, man-made, refined foods are not real foods. And what do we know about real foods?…They cause inflammation in the body. True, high meat consumption without enough stomach acid, variety and/or poor quality meats is inflammatory; but so is a diet rich in gut-irritating whole grains (i.e. cereals, quinoa bowls, oats), nutrient-deficient iceberg lettuce, and vegan ice cream, laced with synthetic ingredients like: guar gum, erythritol, vegetable glycerin, pea protein and other inflammatory fillers.
The Bottom Line:
Eat real, nutrient-dense foods to fight cancer.
The BIG Bottom Line:
A colorful, plant-based, nutrient-dense diet IS the optimal human diet.
In addition, if we really want to “study” the facts on what the optimal human diet is for disease and cancer prevention, who better to look to than our ancestors who were practically free of all modern day diseases we experience today (autoimmune disease, high cholesterol, heart disease, and cancer)? This is a part of the cancer debate.
Also, studies of indigenous, hunter-gatherer populations who live lifestyles like those our own ancestors lived thousands of year ago, reveal similar findings: low disease rates and generally healthy people (23, 24, 25).
The optimal hunter-gatherer diet greatly depended on the terrain, season and geographic location in which one lived, however a few key universal themes true for most human are these:
High intake of colorful plants (vegetables, berries and plant “oils”—like olives, avocados and coconut)
Meat and fish, when hunted and available (i.e. not an 8 oz steak for every meal)
Minimal starches, beans and grains, if at all
Minimal raw dairy
Some nuts and seeds
In short:
If we model a similar diet to the optimal human diet that humans remained cancer-free on for thousands of years, support our gut health (25), and minimize stress in our own lifestyles, the whole “meat causes cancer debate” becomes a thing of the past.

My March playlist is finished and posted on time for once! Please enjoy three and a half hours of my new and old favourite music. A lot of post-hardcore, country of a few different flavours and a thirteen second long song that goes beep beep boop. Enjoy.
Old Money - Omar Rodriguez-Lopez: Who among you will join me on my podcast ‘Omar Podriguez-Locast’ where we discuss one of Omar Rodriguez’s 60+ insane solo albums every week and grow gradually infuriated with the very existence of each other until listeners are just tuning in each week for the episode where one of us finally snaps and attacks the other with a microphone?
America’s Most Blunted - Madvillain: It’s weird that this song about the wild and wacky world of jazz cigarettes opens up with a Steve Reich sample before moving into some real Reefer Madness type lameness at the end. Songs from so long before any type of legalisation are so lame like 'recent research shows that it’s not so darn harmful!’. This song is still very good though. I only found out that Lord Quas was just Madlib recently but I really respect the idea of having a rap alter-ego that’s just you with a pitch pedal.
Love My Way - The Psychedelic Furs: An underrated part of Call Me By Your Name is when Armie Hammer hears this song playing from a car and sprints over to dance with a woman who looks like she’s doing the monster mash.
Seven Stop Hold Restart - Bear Vs. Shark: Despite their bad name Bear Vs. Shark are a very good band and the best lyric in this song is when he says 'I am nine years old with short legs and arms.’ What I like about this song, and this band, is that the screaming is not the sort of affected scream-singing of a lot of their contemporaries it’s just a stocky guy absolutely yelling his guts out, which I appreciate.
Turncoat Revolution - Hot Cross: I think that’s close to what I like so much about Hot Cross too, I’ve never listened to Saetia either (the other band this guy sings for) but maybe I should because I just love this guy’s voice. The central hammery riff is so appealing to me but my favourite part of this song is the ending where the three chords just shrink away as the whole thing mellows down, it feels like realising you’ve been mad at something that happened in a dream this whole time.
Mag11 P82 - Venetian Snares and Daniel Lanois: Venetian Snares is apparently doing an album with Daniel Lanois who produced a bunch of U2 albums so my dream of a Bono/Venetian Snares team up is one step closer to reality. I like collaborations like this where you can very clearly tell who did what part. It’s hard to mistake when and how Venetian Snares is involved in a song a lot of the time. I really like this team up because freeing Snares from any kind of melodic responsibility allows Lanois to give the song a huge amount of space, unprecedented in a Snares song where the melody is often just as frantic as the rest of it.
Cornflake Girl - Tori Amos: Do you remember when Tori Amos had that album called American Doll Posse where she was doing a bunch of characters or something and it’s got one of the worst covers of all time in my opinion and I think about it a lot. Had a song called Big Wheel on it that I get stuck in my head a lot. But this isn’t that song so never mind! I was thinking about the production on this song, and how crazy it is to have whistling as a big part of your song while avoiding having everyone think of it as 'that whistling song’. All the instrumentation on this is great, the mandolin and acoustic next to each other making a huge bed for the piano to move under, then the harpsichord sounding keyboard and the guest vocal near the end, there’s just so much happening I love it.
The Field That Touches My House And Yours - Sarah Louise: This is probably the upcoming album I’m most excited about right now. Sarah Louise (who’s one half of House And Land who I’ve posted about before) is pulling a real James Blake by releasing a lot of amazing instrumental music and then suddenly revealing she’s an absolutely incredible singer and songwriter as well.
Jezebel - The Drones: The Drones have a lot of good songs about how it’s the end of the world and we’re all fucked and we’re all gonna die but this is one of my favourites. The sort of wide ranging scientific nihilism of an opening line like 'strontium 90, removed from milk’ really sets the tone for the rest of this song as it lays out every war like an ongoing nightmare that you have no option but to participate in as your body and the earth turn to muck in their wake.
How Sweet It Is - Karen Dalton: Everyone always talks about Karen Dalton as this mercurial folk phenomenon but I really love her second album where she just does standards with a full band. Hearing her bring her insane, complete chaos sense of rhythm to these regular-ass songs is such a delight to me. The way she just swoops in on the first line with absolutely no regard for whatever else is going on really cracks me up. That the song has backing vocalists for the chorus just makes it better, I imagine them singing while glancing at each other with panicked eyes as she just wildly darts around the microphone and sings absolutely whenever.
Bang Bang - Vanilla Fudge: Pitchfork had some video about the origins of heavy metal and I lasted about ten seconds becuase they mentioned a 60s psychedelic metal forerunner named Vanilla Fudge and my brain went 'funy’ so I looked them up instead. This song is a nightmare I absolutely love it, there’s simply not enough organs around anymore. The organ sounds absolutely immense and balanced against their cursed harmonies it sounds even bigger, what a jam.
Ride For Me (feat. Young Thug & 24 Hrs) - A-Trak and Falcons: Young Thug has finally brought back his insane Harambe voice and I for one couldn’t be happier. I have no idea who 24hrs is but he for real sounds like when Justin Beiber first came out so that’s a thrill.
Space Song - Beach House: This might be the platonic ideal of a Beach House song, it’s just beautiful and I don’t think I really have anything more to say about it. Beach House put out two albums in 2015, they put out the on that this song is on and then like three weeks later they surprise released another one and I was so shocked by the deluge of content that I have never listened to the second one. A powerful lesson for Beach House.
Anna - Will Butler: This song is so good I have no recollection of what the rest of the album sounds like, I just listen to this song over and over and over. Every part is good. The brass, the 'ba ba ba’s, they way he says 'you Got to get Mo-nay’, the piano breaks that sound like he’s just slamming it with flat hands. What a gift.
Hawkmoon 269 - U2: Here’s the straight up truth that nobody wants to hear: Rattle And Hum is U2’s best album. It’s literally just The Joshua Tree except better. It’s every bad instinct of U2 turned up to 11, which is what makes it good. He mentions preachers like twenty times on this album and there’s a gospel choir on two songs, it’s all happening all the time.
Silver And Gold - U2: Here also, is the straight truth: this is U2’s best song. A proper straight up political song about a specific idea, incredible instrumentation and Bono realising halfway through his speech that the crowd unfortunately does not care about Desmond Tutu’s request for economic sanctions against South Africa.
Hunting For Witches - Bloc Party: Post 9/11 war on terror indie is such a good genre. Kele’s always been a bit of a lame-o and he’s really on display here but when the instrumentation bangs like this it’s forgivable. Bloc Party have always seemed like a band where absolutely everyone is pulling their weight and doing the most in every single song and this is a good example. The drums! Matt Tong deserves a trophy!
All Of The Lights - Kanye West: I literally remember where I was the first time I heard the drums in this song, that’s how good it was. I can’t believe I only just found out that every single famous person features on this song. I thought it was just Rhianna but it turns out it’s La Roux in the 'fast cars shooting stars’ bit, Cudi in the 'getting mine’ bit, and fucking Fergie in the 'unemployment line’ part PLUS Elton John and Alicia Keys in the outro? This song is ridiculous. It’s almost a shame that such an incredible song in every aspect features some of Kanye’s most boneheaded verses but I suppose that’s what I love about him.
Let’s Hear It For The Boy - Deniece Williams: I’d like to invite you all now to stand and give a round of applause for my dipshit miser boyfriend that dresses like shit and can’t sing, I love him. I love this song a lot because I feel like she’s talking about me. This is a great song that’s right at the top of my long list of potential wrestling entrance themes.
Hey! - The Go! Team: I was premature when I said that new Go Team album wasn’t that great because it is in actuality very very good. This song would make a good wrestling theme too now that I think of it.
Monument - Royksopp & Robyn: I put the T.I.E. version of this song on my list last month and that prompted me to give the original another listen because it’s honestly just as good in a totally opposite direction. A long bit of space-jazz instead of a monolith threatening to crush you.
Merrymaking At My Place - Calvin Harris: My friend sent me this song and said it reminded him of Mother! which is very funny in my opinion. Loads of people come to my house, they take stuff inside of my house, and smoke stuff outside of my house, lots of people at my front door, lots of people in my front door, trying to get into my house. At my place [leaning into the mic] Baby. [panicked] Baby at my place.
Precious Lord (Take My Hand) (Parts 1 & 2) - Aretha Franklin: I was searching spotify for a good version of The Day Is Past And Gone and ended up finding this Aretha Franklin album that is absolutely incredible. It turns out it’s her first ever recording from when she was 14, which is mind boggling. It sounds like it was recorded from the back row of the church so it has this incredible amount of space to it and she just completely fills it with immense power. Even her piano playing is amazing. The whole thing is just an astonishing piece of music.
Big Iron - Marty Robbins: I was camping this month and thinking about country music, and so this and the next few songs are the result of that. I think Taylor Swift should not only pivot back to county for her next album but pivot back to this kind of cowboy story-song country. She should, in fact, just cover this song. This is The cowboy album and I feel like Marty Robbins may have been the most American man that ever lived, he used the money he made from cowboy songs to finance a NASCAR career.
Country Dumb - Josh T. Pearson: I spent a long time on the fence about Josh T. Pearson because music like this always raises the question of authenticity. He sort of feels like the country version of Nick Cave to me, straining for a very very authentic thing but in actuality a Berlin art boy. The main difference between Pearson and Cave though is that Pearson is actually very good. So I reconcile it by telling myself he’s a sort of Lana Del Rey character singer or something like that. This song is so great and I especially like his guitar style of letting the words lead and the guitar follow, where the lyrics are at the forefront and every part of the music is purely in support of them.
Angel From Montgomery - John Prine: I’m so glad that John Prine is enjoying a bit of a late life resurgence in popularity among the Youth right now because he really deserves it. He feels like the songwriter that every songwriter loves but nobody else has ever heard of. I love this song, it feels like it was custom built to be some 70 year old country woman’s 'Hurt’.
Bogota Affair - Kid Creole And The Coconuts: A good and tropical song about getting cucked on an island and absolutely loving it.
Mientras La Veo Sonar - Rx Bandits: I figured out the reason I like this song and it’s honestly just that it sounds like watered down Mars Volta and I’ll take all of that you’ve got.
Joan, I’m Disappearing - City Calm Down: The way the first line of this song is an unexpected anacrusis makes me laugh cause it feels like the guy from The National just suddenly stepping into your room and collapsing into a seat to complain. I absolutely love this song, I’ve been listening to it on repeat. It’s melodically brilliant in the chorus, it just keeps giving, and structurally it never gets boring by just getting bigger and expanding the entire time to this huge emotional outpouring. I love the lyrics to this song because they’re so pathetic, which sounds like a strange and cruel thing to say but it’s true. It’s such a specific misguided melodramatic plea for a childish love that went on for too long and it’s just so heartbreaking and pathetic, and when it’s turned up to the emotional peak it’s believable and you sympathise. I wish this song went for five minutes more.
Footsteps - Dardanelles: This album was the critical darling of Australian music in 2006 and then this band just totally disappeared and I couldn’t find it for a long time before someone added it to spotify last year and now all their songs have <1000 plays. Very mysterious. I go through stages of being totally obsessed with this song, every part of it is just my favourite kind of pretentious art rock shit. 'This trail of breadcrumbs below your feet whispers like muscle cars on heat’? That’s good lyrics!
Queen Majesty - Techniques: I heard this song late at night when I was listening to ABC RN to fall asleep and some old guy was explaining how rocksteady was better than reggae and now I agree with him.
Opal (Four Tet Remix) - Bicep: The way this song builds around the central strong chords is just incredible, it’s a really simple motif and the way it comes back and sits foundationally through the whole piece. I love in the later half how the extra off-time melodies that seem to have no relation at all to the just come swooping through and almost destabilise the whole thing before those strong strong chords come through again. Also I have a strong suspicion that the snare sound in this is just Four Tet slapping his desk which I respect.
Jesus Came To My Birthday Party - The Middle East: I can’t overstate how much this song is directly wired to my brain stem. It is just perfect. This song is so simple but it feels like it came from another dimension to impart wisdom to me. It honestly makes me feel crazy. This whole album feels like the long lost brother of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea thematically and it really deserves a similar spot in the canon in my opinion. Please listen to it.
Eden - Talk Talk: The dynamics in the guitar playing is what really gets me in this song. The huge crescendo where it feels like the sound is being pulled apart from the inside dissipating to steam as soon as the groove kicks in. I don’t know, there’s not much to be said about Spirit Of Eden that hasn’t already been said, it’s transcendental music. It’s cliched but this is great driving music, music to space out and think about the universe to.
Outlaw Blues - Queens Of The Stone Age: What a treat to suddenly discover that one of my favourite bands has covered my favourite Bob Dylan song and done a great job of it too!
No Condition Is Permanent - Marijata: Ok this is embarrassing but the way I found out about this song was some goober on the overwatch subreddit had made playlists for every hero (Torbjorn’s was all electo-swing and pirate metal so who knows what the fuck was going on) and this and the next song were both on the Doomfist playlist, which was a lot of 70s afro-funk and highlife music which personally isn’t really telling the full story of Doomfist but that’s a whole other post. Anyway this song is great, and I’m glad I listened to this whole dumb-ass playlist to find it. I have a real affinity for songs like that that feel like the recording only ended cause they ran out of tape or the singer collapsed from exhaustion. This song could go for another 20 minutes and I’d only love it more.
Love And Death - Ebo Taylor: The groove of the drums in this song and the melodies of the horns are just hypnotising, and combined with the lyrics this feels like some very dark magic that I completely love. The guitar is really amazing in this as well actually, especially the solo where he switches back and forth between jazz soloing and just frantically strumming open chords.
Automatic (12" Version) - The Pointer Sisters: Huge fan of the extremely powerful megaman synth that comes in about halfway through this song and just charges the whole place up. I love how rich and deep her voice is, how it’s built on by the harmonies in the prechorus and then unleashed in the chorus. I also love how simple the chorus is, it doesn’t overshadow the rest of the song and the verses are just as good which is exactly what you want from a long mix like this. Huge fan of the deep guy’s voice just saying 'au-to-ma-tic’ during the fade out too, give that guy some more to do.
White Girl - Soul Coughing: Lyrically most Soul Coughing songs sound like somewhere between echolalia and reading out every street sign that you see, which is very appealing to me because that’s essentially how I communicate, but this one feels like a dire warning about an approaching conqueror. Also the ending of this song make me laugh because it’s the same as at the end of New Noise by Refused where he just screams 'THE NEW BEAT’ over and over and over after the instruments have all finished and in my eyes that’s a very very funny thing to do with the phrase 'white girl’.
Tone Tone Tone & Tone Tone Two - Shuta Hasunuma and U-zhaan: This album feels like some real Tiny Mix Tapes-core; a collaboration between two Japanese composers - a found object orchestra composer and a tabla player but against all odds it’s actually good. Unfortunately my favourite part of it is this 13 second piece of music that sounds like the brand ID for a very high-end podcast network.
I Won’t Be Found - The Tallest Man On Earth: I listened to this song eight times in a row and sang along the whole time on my drive home from work the other day. His voice is so uniquely good, a cowboy yodel with a slight swedish accent. I’m hooked right from when he sings 'morning’ as 'morning-AH’.
Now U Got Me Hooked - A.A.L: I can’t get over how good this new Nicolas Jaar side project album is. It’s just wall to wall bangers, a perfect party album. I love the really raw sound of a lot of the drums in this song; the huge clap that’s on the edge of being over-distorted mixed with a huge rumbling kick blowing out the low frequency that eventually cleans up and brings the sample back in and almost eliminates the bass entirely before it drops again and the sequence starts over. I love how long a lot of the songs on this album are, every idea is given so much room to completely stretch out.
Ride - Lana Del Rey: I saw Lana live last night and as soon as the first notes of this song played the girl in front of me absolutely screamed 'BITCH!!’ and I felt a real kinship with her. I really think this might be my favourite song of hers. It makes me so emotional every time and I can’t even pinpoint why. The way she sings 'fucking crazy’ the huge, sweeping chorus. It’s just amazing, I love her so much! Bitch!!
