Rick breaks my heart because he’s this sweet, helpful person who wants to take care of everyone and everything, as long as the world fits in tiny, easily labeled boxes under his control. He can keep a million plates spinning that way.
Dad gone, probably forever? It’s fine. Rick will run the entire poultry farm, because as long as it’s all in his hands, he knows the only way something will go wrong is because of him.
Mom sick? It’s okay. He doesn’t need to see friends, or even have them, really, because it means he’ll have time in between work at the farm to go get her medicine and groceries and such.
It’s the moment something escapes his control that Rick explodes.
It manifests as a temper - explosive, accusations, shouting, insisting, and if it’s childish, it’s because Rick had the mantle of adulthood dropped on his shoulders as a child the moment his father sat him down and told him it was time to be the man of the house, since his dad was leaving for a long journey.
But it should be noted that if he continues to be pressed - if whoever he’s fighting with doesn’t storm off themself, which they often do - the temper will finally bubble into a meltdown. Years upon years upon years of carrying not only the world, but the entire universe, on his shoulders comes to task, and soon there’s just tears. Tears, pleas, wordless sounds of grief and confusion.
There’s no apologizing for how he treats people, like when he infantilizes Popuri or assumes anyone looking in her direction wants to do her harm. It’s shitty, and it’s wrong, and he needs to do better, then eat dirt until he’s made up for the things he’s done.
But he’s not okay, not by any stretch of the means, and he makes me sad, and one of my dearest RP goals is to find him some healing and help one day.

The SOS:FOMT remake and why the designs make SENSE
A lot of people dislike the SOS:FOMT remake designs because of the fact that they don’t bear a lot of resemblance to their old designs. However, the designs used in FOMT were ported over from HM64, however, the characters had completely different roles and personalities in comparison to HM64. That said, I know that BTN had changed their roles and FOMT just carried it over, but I’m focusing on FOMT and HM64 because FOMT is getting the remake and HM64 were the original designs.
Overall, their new designs fit within the aesthetics of a new game and better suit their new roles and personalities, as opposed to the ones they originally had in HM64. If they had kept their roles and personalities from HM64, I could understand being upset with the redesigns, however, I feel that their designs needed to be updated even if it means they don’t look the same anymore.
Because truth be told, they aren’t.
Let’s start with the ones we’ve already seen, Karen, Popuri, Rick, and Cliff.
In HM 64 Karen:
Is the daughter of Gotz and Sasha and is the cousin of Cliff and works in a vineyard/bar.
Is rude and ungrateful, becoming defensive towards strangers
Has a strained relationship with Gotz
Tumblr media
In HM64, Karen’s outfit complements her personality. She’s rude and harsh, similar to Gotz and likely got her style of clothes from him. Your rival for her was also Kai instead of Rick. In HM64, she was the daughter of a rude and hard to befriend man who was described as lazy and unmotivated by his wife and a quiet but kind mother who doesn’t seem to socialize much.
In HM:FOMT Karen:
Is the daughter of Jeff and Sasha and works in the local supermarket.
Is chill and laid back, rather friendly and easy to get along with.
She gets along with both of her parents.
Tumblr media
You can see how her design is still pretty much the same despite the fact that her personality and role in the story has changed. This design doesn’t really suit someone who has a gossipy and strong-willed mother and a quiet and anxious father.
Tumblr media
However, her new design better reflects her personality and parents. It pays homage to her blond bangs and dark hair by having her hair transition from a light blond to a dark brown, it also pays homage to her original design by keeping her boots and shorts, as well as the vest and undershirt, but gives them a more stylish appearance. It’s something that is befitting of a girl that is no longer temperamental and rude, but rather someone who is casual and friendly. But otherwise, she looks more like Sasha and Jeff as seen in their new designs here
Tumblr media
Jeff and Sasha’s designs even better suit their personalities with Sasha’s being more reminiscent of someone who is actually strong-willed and a social butterfly while Jeff’s looks more like a guy who runs a supermarket as opposed to looking more the version of himself who was Duke’s nephew and ran a bakery. Between the transition to HM64 and FOMT, the main thing that stayed the same for Karen was her love of drinking, but otherwise, she was a completely different person.
In HM 64 Popuri:
Is the daughter of Basil and Lillia
Works at the flower shop
Seems to be overall more mature although still considered young and upbeat.
Tumblr media
You can see here how this design is better suited for someone who works more so with flowers than they do chickens. Both Basil and Lillia are florists and both have friendly and upbeat personalities. In HM64, your rival for Popuri is Gray instead of Kai. Her parents get along well and she is an only child, as a result, she helps out more in the shop.
In HM:FOMT Popuri:
Is the daughter of Rod and Lillia, and sister of Rick.
Works on a poultry farm.
Is more childish and doesn’t seem to help out as much on the farm.
Tumblr media
Like Karen, you can see how her personality has changed but her design didn’t. With Popuri, her personality didn’t undergo many changes, however, they did make her more childish with her having a huge sweet tooth and participating in festival events mostly meant for children. While still youthful, her outfit doesn’t seem beneficial for someone who works in a chicken coop even if it isn’t as much as she’d like because Rick takes care of most of it. Her outfit is better suited for someone who is a florist or works in a flower shop.
Tumblr media
However, her new design is better suited for someone who is still feminine, girly, and childish but also someone who works on a poultry farm. It pays homage to her original job by giving her a flower-like bow for her braid and giving her a two to three-piece outfit consisting of a blouse, bodice, and dress. It keeps in with her childish nature as well as for someone who would work on a poultry farm. Her boots are similar to the ones that Rick has and the shorter dress makes it easier to get around a coop.
While we don’t know who her father will be in this game, we do have Lillia’s design here
Tumblr media
Assuming they still keep Lillia’s personality and illness the same, it’s safe to assume that she doesn’t get to leave the house as much. It pays homage to her original design with the dark colors and long dress, as well as keeping her hair tied back.
You can easily see how Popuri’s style of clothes is very close to that of her mother’s in both games.
In HM 64 Rick:
Is the cousin of Gray and Ann and is the nephew of Doug
Works in the tool shop where you can purchase brushes, milker, etc.
Is not your rival in any way.
Tumblr media
As you can see, his outfit is pretty well suited for someone who works in a tool shop. In HM64, we don’t know who his parents are, but we do know that he’s related to Gray, Ann and Doug. Because of that, we can see the resemblance between him, Ann, and Gray since they both have blonde hair and he has brown eyes like his uncle Doug. The apron allows him to reach and work with tools easily and the shoes presumably protect his feet in case any of them fall and seems to have a sweatband of sorts to keep the sweat from his eyes while working.
In HM:FOMT Rick:
Is the older brother of Popuri and son of Lillia.
Works on a poultry farm
Is your rival for Karen
Tumblr media
Like the previous ones, you can see how his design didn’t change even though his roles and relations did. Here, he doesn’t look related to Lillia or Popuri, but that can be attributed to Rod as we don’t see him in FOMT. While this outfit isn’t horrible for working with poultry, there are some that could be a little more effective.
Tumblr media
His new outfit in the remake pays homage to his original design by keeping his hair the same color, his bangs, his glasses, and even keeping the green long-sleeved shirt, apron, and pants. However, is better suited for a poultry farm, they even gave him an eye color similar to Popuri’s so they look more related.
With a shorter apron, it’s less likely to get pecked at by rowdy chickens and with pockets on both sides as opposed to just one in the middle, it’s easier for him to store and access small things for dealing with the chickens. And his pants are also tucked into his boots so the chickens can’t peck at that either.
We’ve already seen Lillia’s redesign for the new games, so I won’t go over it again. While his outfit isn’t similar to either Popuri or Lillia, it is better suited for someone who is more active in caring for the farm.
In HM64 Cliff:
Is the cousin of Karen and nephew of Gotz and Sasha.
Lives off the land and in a cave behind the carpenter’s shop.
Doesn’t worry about not having a job, just a quiet guy enjoys animals and fishing.
Tumblr media
As you can see, he looks like a guy who prefers to live off the land rather than a nomad who travels place to place. His hair even has blond highlights, similar to Karen since their cousins in this version of harvest moon. He has thick braces on his arm, useful for his pet hawk Kane/Cain to land on. He’s just a simple and quiet guy who likes animals and doesn’t worry about a job because he lives off of the land.
In HM:FOMT Cliff:
Has no known family in the town
Needs a job in order to stay and is presumably a nomad for that reason, doesn’t live off the land.
Rather than just being quiet, he’s simply shy and has a bit of trouble opening up to people.
Tumblr media
Just like with everyone else, noticing a trend here?, Cliff’s design wasn’t updated to better suit his new personality and role. He still maintains the outfit and looks of a guy that looks like he lives off the land rather than someone who needs a job and has no known family. The only thing that really changed between the two designs is that he lost his thick arm braces as Kane/Cain is not mentioned anymore in the games.
Tumblr media
While I am going to miss his blond hair and highlights, his new outfit looks more like someone who is a nomad as opposed to looking like someone who knows how to live off the land. Since he has no known relatives, we don’t have anyone to compare his outfit too. However, unlike the others, it doesn’t seem like his outfit fulfills a particular kind of job or purpose, which attributes to his nomadic lifestyle as he searches for a job and place to stay. So far, his design pays the least amount of homage to his original one, however, given how much he and his role has changed, it makes sense as he is more of a “new person” than the others revealed so far as they’ve normally have had at least one family member in common going from HM64 -> FOMT>
I’d like to do the others, but their designs haven’t been revealed yet. So chances are, I’ll either update this post or make a part two I necessary analyzing and discussing the character art.
In the end, while the old designs are more nostalgic for a lot of us, at the end of the day, they gave them new designs to represent who they are as people... and FOMT is vastly different from it’s HM64 counterpart even though a lot of the characters at the same. A majority of the time, their mother has stayed the same although their father changed, however, some changed more than others.
Ultimately, I’m glad that Marvelous decided to treat the FOMT versions as if they were different people rather than just cashing on the nostalgic designs to be a selling point of the game. Their new designs further distinguish them from their hM64 counterparts because they are basically different people in comparison to their HM64 versions.
If HM64 was the game getting the remaster, then I’d say that they should probably stick closer to the original designs. However, they aren’t and it’s FOMT getting the remake.
It’s also important to note that the game is a remake rather than a remaster, which basically means that this is a completely different game compared to the original (as a remaster would just be graphical and mechanical updates) and I’m glad they’re treating the characters as if they are brand new characters.
Once more designs are released, I’ll discuss them either here or in another post.
Part Two - Mary, Elli, Doctor, Gray

One thing we (as a community) have to understand is that this is NOT a port or remaster of the original FOMT. It's a new game, and the devs have said that it's a new game. Karen looks more like someone who actually works in a supermarket and more like both of her parents, Rick and Popuri both look like they work on a poultry farm, etc. stop hating the new designs just because they aren't the original. Just go play the original game on an emulator if you want that one so bad.

The Sprouse family kinda broke apart when their father left. It was for a good cause, or so Popuri and their mother, Lillia, will tell anyone. After all, Lillia is chronically sick and Rod, their father, left to find a cure for her, seeking a mystical flower that blooms in the desert once every ten years. He’s been gone a few years now and ever since he left, Rick has been shouldering the burden of what he feels to be the man of the house. He resents their dad for leaving and he and Popuri get into fights about it. Of course, they get into fights about many things.
Really, it’s driven a wedge between her and Rick, because he feels he needs to look out for her and Popuri does not want to be looked after her. He coddles her and is hesitant to let her help with anything around their poultry farm and at the same time, yells at her and Kai if she dares try to be sociable with him. Really, Rick has his own issues, but neither sibling is good at communicating this.
And neither wants to bother Lillia. Their mother is ill and they don’t want to worsen her condition. So Popuri is often left to stew on her own.
Popuri really starts to harbor resentment against her family after a while tbh and she hates it. She doesn’t want to dislike them. Or anyone! she hates disliking people, especially the people she’s viewed as closest to her. But they never let her learn anything. You don’t see her getting that chance until the ds game when she crosses all the way over to Forget-Me-Not Valley and learns from Takakura.  Her own family wouldn’t teach her so she had to go find a stranger to do so. She’s willing to learn, but her brother won’t put in the time and her mom isn’t in a position to do anything.
Her resentment and hating that she resents them is really the biggest driving force behind her runaway verses. They don’t listen to her, they just see her as a kid, and she’s tired of being pushed away and forgotten.

@pxperhearts - Popuri (psc)
Tumblr media
Above all else, Goddess above, Rick did not want to fight today. He wasn’t even sure if either Popuri or Mom remembered what day it was, but Rick did, and the heaviness had been settling on him gradually for over a week with its approach.
The anniversary of Dad leaving them - coinciding perfectly with the day of Rick’s childhood ending.
There wasn’t much space for moping or slowness while running a poultry farm, but today Rick wasn’t sure what he could handle by himself with the gray storm clouds hanging overhead. Maybe that was why, after all these years, he drifted to the living room, where Mom was helping a customer and Popuri was, as usual, restless with nothing to do.
“Hey. Can you help me with something?”

Welcome to Cottage Hills!
Tumblr media
As a remake of Mineral Town from Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, Cottage Hills is a rural farming town, populated with all the colourful characters from the original game, albeit re-imagined with added lore, storytelling and character backstories.
Tumblr media
Also present are all the typical Farming Sim features like the growing of different crops per season, foraging, fishing, mining, raising livestock, farm upgrading, beekeeping, selling produce, festivals, finding the Harvest Goddess, and romancing the town's bachelors and bachelorettes, all against the backdrop of a quiet countryside with a mysterious past.
Tumblr media
Overview of the Town
1. The Meadows Farm. Run by Wally Meadows, who takes the place of Harvest Moon's main playable character, who inherits his grandfather's farm, and has four years to fit in with the locals, and get the farm up and running, or the property will be returned to the town.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Rose Square is the town's main square, where most festivals take place, and where the townsfolk gather to meet. Located here is also the town's bakery, run by Brandon Bakewell, and the old clocktower.
3. The Goodwood Clinic, run by Dr. Tim, who moved to town recently upon hearing rumours of a magical tree that grows here. He is assisted by nurse Elli, granddaughter of the town's traditional healer.
4. The Old Mill Apothecary. Run by old Ellen Elmsley and her grandchildren Elli and Stu. Ellen is the town's traditional healer, and uses herbs from her garden and the forest to make all kinds of brews and tonics.
5. Mayor's House. Mayor Thomas Rosenberg and his son, Harris, the town's constable, stay here.
6. Mary's Bookshop. Run by Mary Reed, daughter of famed botanist, Basil Reed. Mary moved back here, where she grew up, to find inspiration for her new mystery novel, stumbling instead into the mystery of her father's disappearance in the forest.
7. The Cottage Hills Train Station. Built recently, is now the fastest way in and out of town.
8. The Goddess Church was built to worship the town's deity, the Harvest Goddess, who is said to live in the area, and who, according to legend, helped the town's founders establish the town, by giving them her sacred flame and a magic Tree of Life. Rev. Carter stays at the church and keeps the sacred flame burning. He also takes care of the shrines to the Goddess around town and is an avid storyteller.
9. The Town Green is where out of town carnivals and fairs come during the summer and fall to set up shop.
10. The Green's General Store. Run by the Green family, the store sells produce grown locally, as well as imported goods, spices and other necessities.
11. The Hollyhock Inn is run by Doug, the innkeeper and his daughter, Ann after his wife passed away. The inn serves meals throughout the day, and the bar opens at night, where the town's men like to gather after work.
12. Saibara's Workshop. Saibara is the town's blacksmith and mechanic. He crafts farming tools, and sells home appliances and vehicles too. He's taken on a young apprentice, Gray.
13. The Cooper Farm is the town's poultry farm, run by Rod Cooper and his wife, Lillia, and his children, Rick and Popuri.
14. The Yodel Ranch raises cows and sheep and sells dairy products and wool. The ranch is run by old man Barley and his granddaughter, May, who was abandoned at his doorstep by his daughter, Joanna.
Tumblr media
15. Mother's Hill is the town's tallest point, and is where locals go to greet the new year, watch the autumn full moon, or the blossoms in spring.
16. The Green Estate is the home of the Greens, who run the general store, Jeff, Sasha and their daughter, Karen. The family also raises horses on their property.
17. The Misty Forest. The dangerous woods behind the town are off limits to the townsfolk and visitors after several people went in and disappeared, including Mary's father. Locals sometimes hear strange things from the woods, like fearsome howling and even eerie music. The only person, however, who stays inside is Olkan, the huntsman, who's main job is to deter people from entering, and to keep dangerous animals away from town.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
18. The Goddess Springs and Forager's Woods. The hot springs here are believed to be where the Goddess likes to bathe, and visitors often come here to try and meet her, or just to pray at her shrine. The hot springs are also believed to have healing properties. The town mines and foraging grounds are also found here.
19. Gotz's Woods and Luna's Camp. Gotz the woodsman stays here with Louis the beekeeper, after his family died in a blizzard years ago. Luna is a travelling artist and camps next door
20. The Aja Winery, named after owners Duke and Mana's daughter, Aja, who left town a few years ago under mysterious circumstances.
Tumblr media
21. Mineral Beach is located along crystal clear lake Mineral, and is where the villagers gather during the summer. Greg the fisherman stays here at the lighthouse where he runs a fish shop. Kai comes to stay here every summer, when he opens up his seaside snack shack.
Tumblr media
22. The Pond is a favourite fishing spot behind the town square where Greg sometimes comes to fish. The pond freezes over in winter, and an ice skating competition is held here.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Popuri :)
Thank you so much for your patience on this! Ah, yes, Popuri - probably the most popular bachelorette for the Harvest Moon Series, right beside Celia and Muffy if fan art is any indication.  There’s no denying she’s a popular character.  My feelings for her have fluctuated greatly throughout the years.
How I feel about this character:
My first interactions with Popuri were when I played Harvest Moon DS, but she showed up for the rare festival here and there, and she was the one who answered the phone for the poultry shop.  I found her design cute, but I didn’t have much of an opinion on her in general.
The first game I played with Popuri was More Friends of Mineral Town, and my first impression was “why is this immature, spoiled brat so popular”?  Her immaturity really grated on me, to be honest, and I felt bad for Rick for having to take care of the whole family on his own.  I also felt like her and Kai had some hints of trouble in the future of their relationship during their heart events, with Kai seeming a little uncomfortable that Popuri was so insistent to go out with him to see the world.  I got the impression she saw him as a ticket out of town, and she was eager to leave, not giving much thought to how much that replicated her father’s actions.
Looking at it a little more and watching more character events, I realize my first judgments on her might have been a little harsh.  She does express frustration that she was never taught anything to run the farm, and she does try to learn on her own by visiting the MC.  In trying to protect her, Rick is pushing his own sister away, and it’s kind of sad to see, because we know he is going through a lot of pain as well.  There’s a lot of unspoken pain in the PoPoultry family with Lillia’s disease, Rod’s absence, and the effect it’s had on their children.  Rick sees her as not wanting to do any work, but he doesn’t trust her with any of it.  What other choices does she really have?  I can understand her frustration a little better now.
Tumblr media
In the intro event to the siblings in Back to Nature, HM for Girl, we come across the two of them arguing.  Judging from the teary smile Popuri gives us, it’s easy to guess that she’s very eager to have someone in her life that she doesn’t associate with constantly putting her down (even if Rick isn’t like that all the time).
I will probably say this about most characters, but I really prefer the HM64 version of Popuri.  It was this version that also encouraged me to go back and watch her events in Friends of Mineral Town.  HM64 Popuri is more self-assured and mature, helping her mother around the store.  Rick is not her brother in this game, and her father, Basil, is gone for part of the year.  Her romantic events with Gray are really cute, and the two of them treat each other with equal respect.  I really liked that someone as closed off as Gray took up an interest in flowers after meeting Popuri.
So, I guess to sum it up, my opinions on Popuri have improved.  She’s not my favorite character, but I can understand better why people like her and can relate to her.
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Popuri x Gray -  This is the canon pairing in HM64, and I think it was done really well.  Their personalities played well off of each other.
Popuri x Karen - I feel like this is just a given.  I headcanon that Popuri looks up to Karen and thinks she’s really cool.  They both love romantic things, and I can easily see them walking on the beach together and having a picnic date there.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Mineral Town: Popuri/Carter - I see Popuri as shut off from a lot of the town, or at least a lot of people in her age group.  She spends some time at the church, and I don’t think it’s any stretch of the imagination that she enjoys Carter’s company.
Popuri/Cliff - See above regarding Popuri’s time at the church.  It’s possible these two have communicated quite a bit.  I can see them having a deep friendship as Cliff opens up about his past and Popuri compares it to her father leaving the family.  They’d definitely have a lot to talk about.
Popuri/Zack - While Zack probably stops by regularly to pick up shipments and check on Lillia, I can see him having an uncle-esque role to Popuri and Rick.  I imagine him sharing a lot of family meals and spending time together on their time off.
Popuri/Ann - I can see the two of them being friends in both games, but especially HM64 as she works on another farm (greenhouse) that likely helps support the ranch in some way.  They both have a playful streak, and we see them hanging out at the hot springs most mornings in Friends of Mineral Town.
HM64:
Elli/Popuri - As written in my Elli ask, I feel like Elli admires a lot of things that Popuri does.  I can see them sharing flowers and cake together.
Popuri/Greg - By extension, I can see Elli introducing Greg and maybe even Cliff to Popuri as they all go fishing together.  I feel like Popuri would be up for trying something new, especially among friends.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I both love and hate the idea of Popuri x Kai being a canon couple in FoMT.  Like I mentioned earlier, there are some events that hint at possible unhappiness in the future, and I sometimes got the impression that Kai was a little uncomfortable about causing tension between the two siblings, but Popuri persisted.  And, I mean, she should definitely be allowed to spend time with the people she wants to.  My concern is that Kai seemed a little uncomfortable about being the cause of tension between the two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their last heart event gave me a lot of complicated feelings. Kai's proven himself to be a very kind person despite not wanting to keep in contact with his family. Part of me feels like Popuri latched onto that idea a bit - seeing Kai as an escape from Rick. The moment they start arguing about it, the more she lashes out. This could just be a lot of pent up anger coming out, though, and I totally get that. They’re definitely an interesting couple - I’ll give them that!
(A moment of silence for Lillia's sad reaction at the news of her daughter leaving town and quickly slapping a smile back on her face. 😔 I can't imagine her not comparing this to Rod's departure.)
Out of the bachelorettes, FoMT Popuri is probably my least favorite, mostly for her immaturity and complaining without really acting on it.  She wants to help at the farm, and I’d love an event with her mother while she expresses that!  She wants to be whisked away because she’s unhappy, and I feel that she latches onto Kai… because she feels the distance between them is romantic, likely by seeing her parents.  (Wow, I just realized that as I typed it and it just makes me sad.)  Still, among all the games in the series, I love this cast, and Popuri is still part of that.  I still feel like she got a lot more development than a lot of the “newer” games gave characters (i.e. Grand Bazaar, Tale of Two Towns).
Back to Nature and Friends of Mineral Town are similar, but they have different events.  I really wish that they had kept the event where Popuri forgot to take the hens inside and one got killed.  It helps set the mood for the tension between the siblings a lot better.  It’s really easy for people to dislike Rick and see him as nothing but a bully when we don’t see the irresponsible things that Popuri has done while being put in charge of a task on the farm.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
Oops, I guess the thing I wrote above was more of something I wish they had done.  Well, I have other things I wish for Popuri.
I wish that she was given a chance to work on the farm and feel more confident in herself.  I could see this working similarly to Cliff getting his job at the winery.  Seeing Popuri have a sense of helping her family would eliminate a lot of tension between her and Rick.  And that doesn’t mean that she’s not allowed to want to travel the world, either!  I just think that it would be great if she’s able to experience working on the farm like she wanted.  It also be a great tie-in for Rick and Kai to make up and I could see them coordinating with him to help with supplies and keep his beach shack open year round.  Still, Kai likes warm weather, so the jury’s still out on that…
One more thing I wish had been kept from BTN/HM for Girl - Popuri (and a lot of the characters, honestly) had some great expressions that ended up getting cut in future games. I miss the waterfall tears and over-the-top expressions from others.
Thank you so much for the ask!  I had a lot of fun with this one, and even after writing it, I realize that even though she’s my least favorite bachelorette, she’s still a decent character and adds a lot to the cast of the games she’s in. ^-^

Summer Year 1
Her first season as the new head of Strawberry Moon Ranch was... hellish to be charitable.
Mille held at bay tears of frustration building in her hazel eyes and wiped away at the sweat dripping down her tawny blonde bangs. Swinging her scythe in one hand and trashing away the rotted remains of turnips and strawberries in the other hand. She had forgotten to collect her last harvest before they spoiled in the unforgiving summer heat and now not only was a day behind in planting her summer crops but was having to basically throw away money. It was a bitter lesson to swallow but one she wouldn’t soon forget.
She was only Aunt Mint’s best little apprentice for one summer twenty years before. She had to remember that through all the trial and error to not break down. This wasn’t gonna be easy.
Her mind went to more mundane thoughts. She thought she might try growing corn and tomatoes this summer. Phantom scents and tastes of grilled corn on the cob and sweet pasta sauces from Aunt Mint’s kitchen had her mouth watery. She had a taste for pumpkins too and put the seeds on her mental shopping list.
Popuri, the pretty pink haired daughter of the poultry ranch owners that she befriended shortly after arriving, suggested Mille enter the upcoming chicken festival but she wasn’t sure she wanted to deal with raising chickens yet. She had gotten a regular milk cow and the hours of the day barely felt long enough to keep it clean and fed. But she did want to attend some festivals this season since she had to miss out on all the spring festivals. The blonde city girl had never been overly popular but she did manage to make a few friends in Mineral Town already. Popuri was her closest as the girl regularly loved to visit and hear her talk about the city life she dreamed of having. Mille tried to gently tell her it wasn’t all that she thought it was in her head but had a hard time, not wanting to see the cute sparkle in her eyes fade with disappointment. Now that Popuri was on her mind... she remembered her birthday was in a few days. That huge greenhouse on the other side of town was advertising some Pinkcats. Somehow Mille had the hunch her friend would like those so she made another mental note to stop by and pick some up while she was in town.
***
It was her first time in the famous Hybrid Tea greenhouse and for lack of grander terminology, it was absolutely stunning.
The greenhouse roof was tall and had dramatic slopes almost like a glass cathedral. Flowers of many breeds were color coordinated to create a row of rainbows effect as Mille walked through. The scent of freshly, watered flowers was crisp and heavenly. Having finished all her other errands, she leisurely basked in the atmosphere, looking at each flower with adoration for the talent and skill that it took to bring them to such peak perfect bloom. When she got to the violets and blues, she noticed one peculiar plant in the center.
Were those... roses? Blue roses? She didn’t think they actually existed...
“Need some help?”
Mille turned her head to look up at the source of the slightly haughty but somehow familiar voice. What happened next played out like a panel in one of those romance manga she used to read in middle school.
A woman who looked to be her same age with deep tan skin that made her think of warm coffee and hazelnuts was standing over her with curiosity in her reddish brown eyes. Her dark blue curly hair was tied back with a big yellow flower tie. With the sprinklers running in the background adjacent to each other and being hit by the remaining traces of sunlight seeping in, rainbows were in the air as well as sparkling bits of moisture.
To put it bluntly, it was the most beautiful sight she’s seen in all her 31 years of living. She needed to know this woman’s name immediately and maybe her number too... and maybe just everything about her.
Mille stood up straight and started clearing her throat to speak up, “Um yes. I don’t believe we met yet. I’m Mille... Foy. The new owner of Strawberry Moon. I came by for some...” (What was she here for... flower, yes, FLOWERS! which one though... um...green... purple... pi-pi-pink! Pinkcats! Yep that was it.) “... Pinkcats. I need your biggest bouquet of Pinkcats!”
The woman’s expression changed to one more of understanding and a cool, transactional air came at the mention of flowers. “Sorry, I haven’t had the chance to come by and welcome you to town yet. Welcome to the Hybrid Tea Greenhouse. I’m Amber Queen. My family owns this ranch. It’s nice someone was able to takeover Strawberry Moon, it was a shame seeing it shut down since Miss Mint’s been gone. She knew everybody and kept that place running like a machine. Left quite a big footprint.”
That familiar old lump came back in Mille’s throat even as she stood smitten with the lovely woman in front of her but she swallowed it back. “Yeah, she did.”
“I’ll go get that bouquet ready for you. Should be just several minutes.” Before waiting for a reply, Amber was already briskly walking away towards the back completely in work mode.
Mille suddenly got struck by another wave of familiarity but let it pass as she looked back down at the rare blue roses.
Maybe she should try planting some flowers.

[blind date meme] - accepting!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leaving the poultry farm for a blind date is probably the worst thing Rick has ever done in his life. What’s the likelihood that his mom and sister can keep it running while he’s on the mainland? What if Popuri gets into trouble? What if Kai comes over and-
Stop, stop, you’re never gonna get anything done if you’re all worked up like this. As the ferry boat to the mainland finishes docking, Rick busies himself with cleaning his glasses on his shirt, heart pounding nervously. Being paired with a stranger is bad enough. Being paired with a man adds a whole extra level of nervousness - Rick hasn’t exactly had time to figure out his attraction to men, since he’s been running an entire farm since he was, what, thirteen? Thanks, Dad.
Even still, he likes to think he’s planned something fun. Maybe it’s a little left of center, but Popuri deserves something cute from the mainland if she’s been good and hasn’t burned the farm down, and his mother can barely leave the farm anymore with how bad her pain is getting, so...he can get them both something nice!
Popuri, at least, is easy to please.
At the sight of a man matching the description he’s been given, Rick approaches with a companionable smile. He flicks his gaze over the man’s hair and eyes - Rick’s never quite seen someone like this before, but...well, he also so rarely gets away from the island Mineral Town occupies in the first place, so it’s not surprising at all. “Hey, ah, Noe, right? I’m Rick! Rick Sprouse, your blind date?” He knows that already, stop being embarrassing! Rick thrusts a well-worked hand out for a shake. “Sorry if I’m a little late - I had a hen who really didn’t wanna take her medicine this morning. This, um, might be kind of ridiculous, but...there’s this really great self-serve candy shop nearby that sells all this cool, unique candy by weight - I thought we might stop there and get something sweet, then go by the local arcade, play some games for a while?” Now that he’s saying it, it sounds like the most boring date ever.

Collision || Rick & Popuri
@wanderingwhiimsy
One day, Rick would learn that it was very rare that big, starbursting events took place in his life. It was far more likely that the butterfly effect would occur. Somewhere, a small insect would beat their wings, and many miles away many weeks later, a hurricane spurred by that one little wing flap would sweep through.
Mary would like this, Rick thought one day when he was finally accepting the fact that he would have to unpack...many things. That he couldn’t keep living out of his suitcase. That he’d been here nearly a month, and that he was no closer to his goal of finding Popuri than he had been at the start of his journey. So as he unpacked the few books he owned, he found one that he’d mistakenly packed - an old romance novel, one of the many that his mother read and then had no use for once she’d bought a new one. The library rarely took books as well-loved as this back home, but...perhaps Mary would enjoy reading it. Rick certainly had no use for it.
Rick barely thought of much else as he wandered toward Mary’s apartment, adjusting his glasses. The sun shone vividly overhead, and for the first time, he really imagined a world where...where he could stay here. Where he could learn to find his place on two islands such as these. But he just as quickly discarded the notion. He had a mission here, and once it was finished, he was going home - with or without Popuri.
It’s nice to dream, though, he thought with a deep sigh as he knocked on the front door of Mary’s apartment. Having the ability to make a choice about his future, that had never been an option. He would take over their poultry farm upon his mother passing away - which might be sooner than expected, he thought grimly, with the stress of having both of her children as well as her husband away - and he would never leave that small town ever again. He’d remember these islands in his dreams. He’d feel a deep, desperate yearning, and then he’d wake and do away with it - just like he had every other dream that came to mind during his entire life.
The door opened, and he looked up with a smile, then felt his heart stop dead in his chest. He dropped the book as the ground crumbled beneath him, tile by tile. And as he drank in the first sight of his sister in two years, everything else fell away.

Deep red eyes shimmering with joy, the girl clutches one of the ranch’s  CHICKENS  to her chest. The animal seems calm with her, and she hums gently along with its clucks, looking down at the others crowding about her feet. Popuri has always had a great love for chickens -- had grown up on a poultry farm, in fact, but since moving out of the family home she’s hoping to have a coop of her own.   ❝ I wonder if they’d consider  SELLING  a few of you to me... or even some fertilised eggs would do! Wouldn’t that be lovely, hmm? ♡ ❞

Full confession:
My pie in the sky dream SOS game would be a 3oT-style hybrid of 64 and BtN with new features added in. Your farm would be set between Flower Bud Village and Mineral Town, and each town has their original maps intact. Both of the areas will have their own set of exclusively-sold animals, seeds, recipes, and clothing. Except for Dr. Trent and Carter, the 64 versions of the townsfolk takes precedence here.
Don’t fret if your favorite pairing is from BtN since YOU CAN PLAY MATCHMAKER!! You can choose the 64 ships, the BtN ships or make your own! 2 new bachelorettes would be available: Duke’s daughter, Aja, and the mysterious Princess Vanilla! (Depending on which game you played first, Mary x Harris or Popuri x Rick might be childhood-ruining, but that’s up to viewer discretion.)
To clear up some confusion and to create new stories, a couple of the family trees would be combined. Degas and Ellen are married and raising their three grandchildren: Elli, Stu and Kent. Duke and Manna are married and have two children, Aja and Manna’s young son from 64. Saibara would become Ann and Grey’s maternal grandfather as well. Zack is the son of Barley and Gaya, who were once married but eventually divorced. Barley has since remarried to Sydney, so you’ll be seeing May talk about how weird it is that she got a new step-grandma so soon after her other grandma (Zack’s MIL) passed away.
Since Mineral Town only introduced Dr. Trent, Carter and Won, some characters would be reintroduced as MT residents: Aja; the three tourist girls; Greg; Louis; and Kano. A few others characters from the series can fill the void too. From the GB games, Chet can run the poultry farm while Rosie runs the inn with Choco helping.
(I wonder what the budget would be for this thing, lol.)
