Stephen McCauley: It seemed to really change the dynamic of the band when you joined because the lineup had changed quite frequently in the years leading up to that but when you joined, that seemed to lock something in place. Why do you think that was? Michael Shuman: Good people. It's not just about the music, it's about being around people that you love and that you want to spend time with. So I think, Josh being our leader, realized he wanted to put this thing together and he found the right pieces. Cause we're like a family, man. We vacation together, we hang out with our kids together, I don't have kids but I hang out with their kids. I think that's the most important part, I think that's why it's lasted so long.

I’m back.
Sorry it’s been so long it’s my last year of school and life sucks right now but yknow what makes it better? Good Omens (currently rewatching with a friend) heartstopper (rewatched at 3am many times) and red white and royal blue (rewatched/read 5 times in the last week) I know it sound like a lot but hey what else am I gonna do with my life I’m dropping out (not exactly, more like switching to entirely online classes) of school in a week cause my family is moving 5 hours south and barely gonna pass the year but at least I’ll be able to graduate right :) oh and remember that guitar I mentioned a while back, I can now play nothing else matters, one, master of puppets (sort of), enter sandman, most of sleepwalk my life away, sad but true, and bits and pieces of 72 seasons, you must burn, fade to black, seek and destroy, and crown of barbed wire (all Metallica(yes I’m obsessed leave me alone)) and can play bits of run by foo fighters, all of negative space by qotsa, and probably a bunch of other songs that I don’t remember. Oo and I’ve started looking at purple haze by Jimi Hendrix and Cliffs of Dover a little bit
Ok
Well imma disappear for a while again now
(Please talk to me)
OMG AND CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT THE OFMD TEASER I LOVE IT SOOO MUCH!!!!

Hey friend! I saw Dabi music! So I really have a couple bands I really rely on for League music (QotSA is a big one). Here's some that I use for Dabi whether in feel or lyrics. Lots of fire themes, of course, but the genres vary from rock to punk to industrial metal to electronica.
Feet Don't Fail Me Now - Queens of the Stone Age
Head Like a Haunted House - Queens of the Stone Age
The Evil has Landed and Domesticated Animals as general League songs from the same album as the songs above. (really recommend Domesticated Animals because the lyrics are a bit freakishly bnha-specific and also there's a big "@ Hawks" vibe to it)
One last QOTSA song - My God is the Sun because I think there's a bit of Stain & Dabi's rage at the system in the lyrics. Watch the video, it's cool.
worldstar money by Joji (imagining touya burning...)
Unperson - Nothing but Thieves (also a Jin song lol)
Bed of Roses - Mindless Self Indulgence
Blood // Water - grandson
Supremacy - Muse
Right On, Frankenstein! - Death From Above 1979
Fire - Kasabian
Some Kind of Monster - Metallica
Wish - Nine Inch Nails
Is It Cold in the Water - SOPHIE
Call Them Brothers - Regina Spektor
I Gave You All - Mumford & Sons
Gasoline - I Prevail (kind of my Dabi Dance song)
Ship on Fire - Zeal & Ardor
Relay - Fiona Apple (No better Todoroki family song exists)
Firestarter - Prodigy
Father of Mine - Everclear
Winter - Tori Amos (I interpret this song a bit more cynically than we're supposed to)
Guilty - Gravity Kills
Hope you find some songs from that list!
hi! thank you so much for taking the time to put together a rec list and share it with me <3 I'm about halfway through it and though the genres aren't all for me, I'm really enjoying all the lyrics so far. I'll probably go back to this list whenever I need inspo for fic titles :'D you're def right that QotSA has some pretty spot on vibes, but the others do too

My favourite music released in 2023
Tumblr media
Doing end of year lists is always tricky. You get influenced by what you've heard most recently and there are bound to be things you think afterwards that you should have included on reflection, but here's a dozen of the artists I've listened to on repeat this year (in no particular order).
First is the incredible Amelia Coburn, who I've actually managed to see live twice, too! I planned my holiday around being back in Birmingham to see her in April at Kitchen Garden Cafe and she certainly didn't disappoint! If you haven't heard her music, she's a folk-influenced singer-songwriter, so live it's just her and a variety of stringed instruments. On record, she tends to add other instrumentation and the see-saw single released this autumn was quite a spooky affair featuring something like a xylophone, drums, bass piano and electric guitar, as well as ukulele. I absolutely can't wait for her album to be released next year. I think it's going to be really special. https://www.ameliacoburn.co.uk/
One of my favourite sets at Glastonbury (on TV) was Queens of the Stone Age, who absolutely smashed it. They played the best songs from throughout their career, but the songs from the new album absolutely stood up next to those. Nobody else sounds like them and Josh Homme has such a versatile voice, as well as one of the tightest bands in the world. There's no such thing as a formulaic QOTSA song and no lazy chords strummed in a way you've heard thousands of times before - they kick arse and constantly delight.
My connections to Stoke are pretty strong. I studied there, my wife grew up there and still has family living in the area, but until recently it wasn't really known for great indie music. One band I've discovered on the new indie scene who I really love, though is The Dread Kaili who are very difficult to find much out about, but write brilliant off-kilter tunes. Their album III came out in June and listened to it loads over the summer. With song titles such as 'Crazy as a shit house rat' 'What Fresh Simulacrum Of Hell Is This' and 'Tycho's Golden Nose', you can probably tell that this is not your standard indie pop. It has just the right amount of weirdness combined with hooks and great melodies to keep me coming back. https://dromarecords.bandcamp.com/album/iii
I really wasn't expecting Blur to release a new album this year, but I am very glad they did. As soon as I heard the first single, I knew this was going to be a special album, and I wasn't disappointed. In the maturity they now have, they have a great understanding of what they do well and how to bring the best out of each other. Damon and Graham have been producing brilliant music outside of the band for years, but this is the best album they've done together for a long time. My favourite song is St Charles Square, but there are many highlights.
3 Little Wolves are another band that have a connection to Stoke, as I was at Keele with Paul, the lead singer and main songwriter. I've seen them play live a few times in Birmingham and even supported them in a gig this month with my duo The Missed Trees. This album has been a long time coming. It was a couple of years and a few lineup changes from when they released the first single Darkside, so most of the songs on the album had already been released albeit in different versions. There weren't many surprises, but the songs were excellent and good to see them finally being released as a full album. The next album will be much more of a collaborative affair with guitarist Leong more involved in the songwriting and from what I've heard from the live shows there are some strong songs to come! https://3littlewolves.bandcamp.com/album/fires-in-the-night
Before I discovered the new indie scene on Twitter and realised how much great new music there is, there were a few bands that shook me out of thinking there's not much new stuff I like. One of those was Fontaines DC and their lead singer Grian Chatten immediately struck me as a songwriter that stood out. The band met through their love of poetry and his lyrics have always been brilliant. His first solo album, which came out in June, is much folkier in places than Fontaines DC, but has a real variety of styles while still being full of clever lyrics and interesting melodies. I absolutely love it.
Another folk singer in the list is Ellie Gowers, whose 2022 album was one of my favourites of that year. She's only released two singles this year, but 'The stars are ours' was most definitely a highlight of the 2023 for me. A beautiful song about the right to roam and protecting people's rights to camp on Dartmoor. The choral version is my favourite, I think, and I can't wait for her next album. Last time she played in Birmingham, we supported her at a sold out gig at Kitchen Garden Cafe. I would love to play with her again, but I expect her next album to be much bigger and her to deservedly become a star. https://elliegowersmusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-stars-are-ours-ep
Next up is another star from the 90s who's still producing brilliant music. PJ Harvey spent last year focusing on her writing, but this year she released the sublime 'I Inside the Old Year Dying'. The guitars chime in almost a shoegazey way at times, there's a haunting quality befitting of such a title and it sounds like nothing else, as all PJ Harvey's albums do, including sounding nothing like any of her other albums. I don't know how she does it, but every time we get a new fresh sound and yet it's totally her sound and utterly compelling.
The last established artist on the list is also someone who's been part of two of these albums. Graham Coxon's new project is called The Waeve and sees him teaming up with Rose Elinor Dougall to produce a highly acclaimed debut LP that absolutely blew me away when I first heard it. There are elements of so many different genres in their songs and the twists and turns keep you guessing in every song. Nothing feels old and tired. I genuinely love it as much as anything Graham's done in or out of Blur.
I saw the incredible talent that is Silvi live for the first time this year. She came down from Scotland to play a gig in Oxford and I couldn't miss this opportunity to hear her sing live. It was also a chance to meet a load of people I'd only ever previously spoken to on Twitter for the first time IRL, as everyone was there for this. Her vocals are absolutely outstanding, but she's not just a singer, she is also a talented songwriter and fully in charge of making sure her songs sound exactly as she wants. This is paying off, as she is recognised more and more as one to watch with a genuine chance of joining the more established artists in this list as a big musical star. https://linktr.ee/silvimusichq
I am enormously grateful to Joe Adhemar for the kindness he's shown me in helping me get to grips with recording as a DIY musician. I have immense respect for him and we have developed a long-distance friendship (meeting in person for the first time this year), but that's not why I chose his album for this. He is incredibly talented, both as a musician/songwriter and producer, so you always know that his work delivers high quality songs that sound great. The Synesthete sees him teaming up with guitarist Jim Sanger who adds some biting guitar riffs to Joe's songs that are largely sophisticated synth pop/rock with nods to Peter Gabriel and Giorgio Moroder, some strong indie influences, but also bluesy touches. The song that stood out to many on this album was Hopper, with its Stranger Things motifs and hooky chorus, but I know Joe himself feels there are a lot of other stronger songs on the album. I recommend you check it out. https://joeadhemar.bandcamp.com/album/the-synesthete
The final artist on the list produced the biggest album, but it's not quantity over quality. Blokeacola is a songwriter I've been following and enjoying his music for a couple of years now. This year, he released the epic 30 songs that make up Quasars and Fluff. He often takes quite a minimalist approach to his songs, but they're rich in clever lyrics, great guitar playing and strong melodies. I can't possibly do justice to the whole album, but encourage you to take a listen: https://blokeacola.bandcamp.com/album/quasars-and-fluff
I've really enjoyed taking time to discover lots of new music this year. My list takes in established acts and those with much smaller audiences, but to me it's all just as exciting to listen to and worth time and effort in discovering. Make your new year's resolution to listen to and support new music this year. There are loads of talented people out there whose music deserves your time whether or not they're supported by a big label.

Cleaning Out the Rooms - a Harry Du Bois playlist Alcoholism, getting better?, memory loss, being a superstar, The Final Dream, forming political opinions, bad breakups, past transgressions, being a strange and inconsistent being, and persisting despite it all 26 songs (r-slur warning for Turnin’ on the Screw - QotSA)
including: David Bazan, They Might be Giants, The Mountain Goats, British Sea Power (of course), Queens of the Stone Age, and more.  Full track listing and lyric excerpts under the cut
---- Turnin' on the Screw - Queens of the Stone Age (This is the opening track on Era Vulgaris, seemed like an appropriate opening song / introduction to Harry's general essence) ----
... They say those who can't just instruct others And act like victims or jilted lovers You can't lose it if you never had it Disappear, man, do some magic
Want a reason? How's about because You ain't a has been if you never was
I sound like this
Scared to say what is your passion So slag it all, bitter's in fashion Fear of failure's all you've started The jury is in, verdict: r******d
I'm so tired, and I'm wired too I'm a mess; I guess I'm turning on the screw
---- Bless this Mess - David Bazan (Harry being a drunk and a general mess, things going in cycles) ----
God bless the man who stumbles God bless the man who falls God bless the man who yields to temptation God bless the woman who suffers God bless the woman who weeps God bless the children trying her patience Trouble getting over it Is what you're in for So pour yourself another 'Cause it'll take a steady pair of hands Holy or unholy ghost Well now I can't tell, but either way you cut it You should get some distance if you plan to take a stand God bless the house divided God bless the weeds in the wheat God bless the lamp hid under a bushel I discovered hell to be the poison in the well So I tried to warn the others of the curse But then my body turned on me I dreamt that for eternity My family would burn Then I awoke with a wicked thirst
---- Don’t Sit Down Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair - Arctic Monkeys (general Harry vibe.  off-kilter) ----
Break a mirror, roll the dice
...
Find a well-known hard man and start a fight Wear your shell suit on bonfire night Fill in a circular hole with a peg that's square
But just don't sit down 'cause I've moved your chair
...
Bite the lightning and tell me how it tastes Kung fu fighting on your roller skates Do the Macarena in the devil's lair
But just don't sit down 'cause I've moved your chair
---- I've Been Seeing Things - They Might be Giants (feels very Harry's detecting style, surreal happenstance) ----
I've been seeing things I've been seeing things Don't have answers but I've got lots of questions
Carpool's up, someone gets out Hand someone else a violin case I'm trying not to let them see me looking at them But I'm pretty sure there was a dollar sign
Keep your eyes peeled and you'll see stuff Which at first seems like unimportant irrelevant things
Can't just ask some perfect stranger "What are you hiding in your violin case?" Shadow them at a distance instead Try to get inside their head
Where'd they go now (Where'd they go now) I got distracted (I got distracted) Begging me to stay (Begging me to stay) Wearing a disguise (Wearing a disguise) That lady (That lady) Must have ditched the kid (Must have ditched the kid) Hidge the down (Hidge the down) [???] What's she up to now? (What's she up to now?) Trembling cold by the airport road Watching them stack containers in rows Seagulls, helicopter, windblown trash Something doesn't add up
I've been seeing things I've been seeing things No one asks but I'm packing all kinds of attention
Later I'm watching a news report Camera pans across a crime scene Unremarked upon detail Empty violin case Okay maybe not the same case Different material, different color Still you have to wonder Am I the only one who knows
I've been seeing things
---- Music is the Victim - Scissor Sisters (breakup Harry.  drug-addled disco Harry) ----
I left my heart in San Fransisco It's at some motherfucking disco The people there where dancin' on it And that's including Ms. Matronic
Hell if music is the victim then so am I Of lovin' and a cheatin' the snake gon' bite I beg and I scream and I cuss and I cry If music is the victim then so am I
Of your bad fun Money's all gone but you need some Lover's on the phone but they got none Daddy ain't home from the dog run And you're riding through the city with a shotgun
I left my bag in Pasadena Where all them girls was doin' Tina Them bitches sure were crunked up on it I said I'd rather smoke some chronic
Hell if music is the victim then so am I Of lovin' and a cheatin' the snake gon' bite I beg and I scream and I cuss and I cry If music is the victim then so am I
---- Down to Your Soul - Right Away, Great Captain! (about the Final Dream and pre-game Harry) ----
And I see things I actually don't see. I knew it wasn't actually you a few feet from my reach. I looked into your eyes and I began to lose my teeth, And I felt you were dreaming the same thing.
And I know you don't know what I'm capable of But if you give me just one more minute I'm sure That you would be shaking right down to your soul And I'd hope that the fear of the lord brings me home. I'm a man in a body of water so tall Could swallow you whole and forget where he's going But I carved a map in the back of my arm Don't worry I'm coming home I said don't worry cause I'm coming home
---- No Surprises - Radiohead (suicidal harry, pre-game.  Maybe immediately before the game.  A little Big Communism Builder) ----
A heart that's full up like a landfill A job that slowly kills you Bruises that won't heal You look so tired, unhappy Bring down the government They don't, they don't speak for us I'll take a quiet life A handshake of carbon monoxide
And no alarms and no surprises
This is my final fit My final bellyache
No alarms and no surprises, please (get me out of here)
---- Cleaning Out the Rooms - British Sea Power (The instrumental part seems to have been used / referenced for a background music track.  And also the name of that one thought project. as expected, it fits beautifully.  Wake up in a new life, down by the seaside.  Cleaning out the rooms.  She’ll be coming soon.) ----
Where life is good in a way Swept away upon our hearts, in cold coal ceremonial On a rainy day, hang it up Get the vacuum and suck it in Cleaning out the rooms, I'll clean it up Dark cloud, drifting out of view I'll never know, she'll be coming soon, that is all I'll wake up in a new life, ship shape and shoe shine Cleaning out the rooms, I'll clean it up She'll be coming soon Drifting into view, way in the west, white cloud If everybody knew, I never knew, she'll be coming soon I'll wake up in a new life, down by the seaside In a new life, down by the seaside Cleaning out the room, I'll clean it up Dark clouds, she'll be coming soon Down the chimney, out the window, that is all
---- In the Morning of the Magicians - The Flaming Lips (waking up with no memory, but bad vibes) ----
In the morning I awake
And I couldn't remember What is love and what is hate
The calculations error
Oh, what is love and what is hate? And why does it matter? Is to love just a waste? And how can it matter?
Oh...
As the dawn began to break I had to surrender The universe will have its way Too powerful to master
---- Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads (Huh??  What's happening??  same as it ever was, same as it ever was) ----
And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?" And you may ask yourself, "Where is that large automobile?" And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house" And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"
...
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
...
And you may ask yourself, "What is that beautiful house?" And you may ask yourself, "Where does that highway go to?" And you may ask yourself, "Am I right? Am I wrong?" And you may say to yourself, "My God! What have I done?"
---- Don't Change - David Bazan (alcoholism, cycles of wanting to get better, depression, slipping in to old coping mechanisms, plus a little bit in here about dreams.  This is a song for if Harry continues partying after the memory wipe, I suppose) ----
He seems nice You met him once or twice But you wonder what he's like When he's sober
Then again You hear he has no friends Just people that he spins To do him favors
When he wakes up in the morning he tells himself Today I'll make a change But falling into his bed at night he thinks Man it was a beautiful day to stay the same
I'm so deep That only in my sleep Do the secrets that I keep Float to the surface
So I hold them down Till they don't make a sound Like they accidentally drowned Except on purpose
And when I wake up in the morning I tell myself Today I'll make a change But falling into my bed at night I think Man it was a beautiful day to stay the same
---- Airbag - Radiohead (born again, back to save the universe) ----
In the next world war In a jackknifed juggernaut I am born again In the neon sign scrolling up and down I am born again
In an interstellar burst I am back to save the universe
In a deep, deep sleep of the innocent I am born again In a fast German car I'm amazed that I survived An airbag saved my life
In an interstellar burst I am back to save the universe
---- A Comet Appears - The Shins (puppeting a man-body around pretending to be a living thing. drinking, depression) ----
One hand on this wily comet Take a drink just to give me some weight Some uber-man I'd make I'm barely a vapor
They shone a chlorine light on A host of individual sins Let's carve my aging face off Fetch us a knife Start with my eyes Down so the lines Form a grimacing smile
Close your eyes to corral a virtue Is this fooling anyone else? Never worked so long and hard To cement a failure
---- The Communists Have the Music - They Might be Giants (Big Communism Builder, but especially Harry's shallow understanding of Communism.  Party-boy communist) ----
I got handed an Ayn Rand sandwich Straight from the can, it tasted so bland I asked a lass to pass me a glass Of Engels' Conditions of the Working Class
Right away they dragged me to the committee To explain my un-American activity They're gonna see they made a mistake If they'd only let me play my mixtape
I'm not partial to the martial Or the plutocrats, in their beaver hats And the fascists have the outfits But I don't care for the outfits What I care about is music And the communists have the music
---- Harlem Roulette - The Mountain Goats (Harry thinking about Guillame le Million?  Generally: that vibe of secret, maybe supranatural machinations happening just outside your field of view.  A kinda lonely, pensive vibe, sprinkled with past drug use, driving...memory) ----
Unknown engines underneath the city Steam pushing up in billows through the grates Frankie Lymon's tracking "Seabreeze" in a studio in Harlem Its 1968. Just a pair of tunes to hammer out. Everybody's off the clock by 10:00. The loneliest people in the whole wide world are the ones you're never going to see again. Feels so free when I hit the avenue. Nothing like a New York summer night. Every dream's a good dream, Even awful dreams are good dreams, If you're doing it right. Remember soaring higher than a cloud. Get pretty sentimental now and then. The loneliest people in the whole wide world are the ones you're never going to see again. And four hours north of Portland, a radio flips on. And some no one from the future remembers that you're gone. Armies massing in the dusky distance. Ghosted in the ribbon microphone. Leave a little mark on something, maybe, Take the secret circuit home. Nothing in the shadows but the shadow hands. Reaching out to sad, young, frightened men. The loneliest people in the whole wide world are the ones you're never going to see again.
---- Suture up Your Future - Queens of the Stone Age (Harry's gonna fix his mess) ----
I'm gon' suture up my future I ain't jaded, I just hate it See, I been down too long It's kinda hard to explain Burned and buried, all I carried
...
Tried explaining unexplained Got caught in the plan All this talking at once I've been giving my love away To the things that tear it apart I'm gonna suture up my future
---- Lampshades on Fire - Modest Mouse (Harry trashing his body / having already trashed his body, just kinda a Harry-vibe song) ----
...
Well, the lampshade's on fire when the lights go out This is what I really call a party now Well, fear makes us really, really run around A-this one's done so where to now? Our eyes light up, we have no shame at all Well, you all know what I'm talking about The room lights up, but we're still dancing around We're having fun, having some fun now
Pack up again, head to the next place Where we'll make the same mistakes Open one up and let it fall to the ground Pile out the door when it all runs out
...
As our feelings are getting hurt Oh, we want you to do the work Our ass looks great inside these jeans Well, we want just our water clean
Well, this is how it's always been And this is how it's going to be So you just move on
---- Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes (Harry "can-opener" du Bois.  Talking to the skills, solving things, detecting, generally being a terrifying force of nature / the pale) ----
I'm gonna fight 'em all A seven nation army couldn't hold me back They're gonna rip it off Taking their time right behind my back
And I'm talking to myself at night Because I can't forget Back and forth through my mind Behind a cigarette
And the message coming from my eyes Says, "Leave it alone"
Don't wanna hear about it Every single one's got a story to tell Everyone knows about it From the Queen of England to the Hounds of Hell
And if I catch it coming back my way I'm gonna serve it to you And that ain't what you want to hear But that's what I'll do
And the feeling coming from my bones Says, "Find a home"
---- Body of Years - Mother Mother (Harry's past that follows him, Harry's half-decomposed body that marks the years of abuse it's been through) ----
All the remains of a cadaver of days I keep hidden away, keep them there just in case I wanna visit that place Blow the dust from the bones Off a body of years that I leave all alone Just a body of years
See the skin disappears And the blood turns to stone In a body of years now a pile of bones Like a sheet of veneer Each a piece of my soul It's a body of years that I leave all alone
It's Just a body of years, now a pile of bones You know Old soul who falls down Can't stop trippin' on these Old roads I go down Get back up and get my foot in the door And my face on the page Make my mark in the world With a bat and a blade It's a body of work that you can't ever change Like a body of years that you take to your grave It's just a body of years that I leave all alone It's just a body of years, now a pile of bones Like a sheet of veneer Each a piece of my soul
---- The Cap-m - They Might be Giants (just a Harry vibe song) ----
When I talk you keep looking away from me 'Cause you probably think that I'm high on pot But I'm not, I'm not
Look me over, I'm the Cap'm You say it's such a joke But I don't see you laughing
People seem to think you can't be called the Cap'm Unless you drive a boat Well, I don't I don't
Look me over, I'm the Cap'm Go ahead and mess with me You'll find out what will happ'm
...
Did you say what I think you just said My hat looks good on me? I agree, I agree
Look me over, I'm the Cap'm You act like it's a joke But I don't see you laughing
---- Broke - Modest Mouse (oops!  all mistakes.  Broke it all.  Want to forget it but can't) ----
Broke account, so I broke a sweat I've bought some things that I sort of regret about now Broke my pace and ran out of time Sometimes I'm so full of shit that it should be a crime
Broke a promise 'cause my car broke down Such a classic excuse it should be bronze by now Broke your glasses, but it broke the ice You said that I was an asshole and I paid the price
Broken hearts want broken necks I've done some things that I'd love to forget, but I can't
Broke up, and I'm relieved somehow It's the end of the discussions that just go 'round and 'round And 'round, and 'round, and 'round ... It was like everything was evidence of broken time
You're living on fancy wine You'll drink that turpentine You're starting conversations You don't even know the topic
---- Spent Gladiator 2 - The Mountain Goats (Defiantly alive) ----
Like a spent gladiator, Crawling in the coliseum dust. Who can count on his remaining limbs, All the people he can trust. Like the one who stands behind him, Cheering him on. Ecstatic when he stands defiant, Wild with abandon when he's gone. Just stay alive. Keep your eyes on the pay line. Like a village on the step, About to get collectivized. When the men emerge with rifles from the haystack, Everybody looks surprised. Like the mice in the forgotten grain, Way up on the top shelf. Like someone who's found a small town to escape to, Keeps one eye on his abandoned, former self. Stay in the game. Just try to play through the pain. Like a fighter who's been told its finally time for him to quit. Show up in shining colors, And then stand there and get hit. Like the clock that ticks in Dresden, When the whole town's been destroyed. Like the nagging flash of insight, You're always desperate to avoid. Like the bloody-knuckled gunman, Still stationed at the breach. Like that board game with the sliders, And the children on the beach. Stay alive. Maybe spit some blood at the camera. Just stay alive. Stay forever alive.
---- You Only Live Once - The Strokes (just general Harry, talking about the skills, choices you can make, what kind of cop you can be) ----
Twenty-nine different attributes Only seven that you like, oh-oh Twenty ways to see the world, oh And twenty ways to start a fight, oh
...
And countless odd religions too It doesn't matter which you choose, oh, no One stubborn way to turn your back, oh This I've tried and now refuse, oh
Oh don't, don't, don't get up I can't see the sunshine Oh, I'll be waiting for you, baby 'Cause I'm through Sit me down Shut me up I'll calm down And I'll get along with you
---- Pork and Beans - Weezer (Superstar Cop) ----
They say I need some rogaine to put in my hair Work it out at the gym to fit my underwear Oakley makes the shades to transform a tool You'd hate for the kids to think that you've lost your cool
I'ma do the things that I wanna do I ain't got a thing to prove to you I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans Excuse my manners if I make a scene I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like I'm fine and dandy with the me inside One look in the mirror and I'm tickled pink I don't give a hoot about what you think
Everyone likes to dance to a happy song With a catchy chorus and beat so they can sing along Timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the charts Maybe if I work with him I can perfect the art
No, I don't care I don't care
---- Freaks - Surf Curse (head filled with skills, The Final Dream) ----
Don't kill me just help me run away From everyone I need a place to stay Where I can cover up my face Don't cry, I am just a freak
I am just a freak(x3)
My head is filled with parasites Black holes cover up my eyes I dream of you almost every night Hopefully I won't wake up this time
I won't wake up this time(x3)

jesus fucking christ im just now learning of all the shit thats happening in josh homme and brody dalles divorce. qotsa is one of my favorite bands of all time but josh homme is acting like an abusive monstrous piece of shit thats just terrorizing his family bcus he feels entitled to own them. i always knew he had a darker side and was not that great to deal with but i didnt know he would escalate to full on family abuse

Your Favorite Band is the Foundation of Your Identity
How @qotsa formed the foundation of my identity with their stoner rock concept album "Songs for the Deaf," the most memorable and enjoyable listening experience of my life.
Our identities are a culmination of all sorts of beliefs and experiences, but in our youth, those beliefs are often handed down by our families and our experiences are limited. It isn’t until we’re “rebellious” teens shaking our hips to the Devil’s music that we actually start making decisions that form our own, unique identities and differentiate us from our parents. This is why your favorite…

okay, i have listened to the playlist in full and here are my thoughts (please forgive my rambling; i had so much fun with this and it allowed me to procrastinate the next chapter so truly thank you ❤️):
“go fuck yourself”: as i listened, i tried to categorize them into either din/reader/or reader&din songs and this one felt very din&reader. just this tandem slog through life beside one another without really being together (yet).
“fresh blood”: oh a din song, absolutely. the line “i know you’re probably gettin’ ready for bed” made me think of gorgu too 😩
“help i’m alive”: shit that’s the reader in a nutshell omg. “hard to be tough/tough to be tender” OOF
“i come with knives”: BITCH THE VIBES OF THIS SONG. right off the bat. damn! idk wtf they’re saying in the german section, but i’m fucking here fOR IT!!!!
“angel of small death…”: i am obsessed with the idea of the reader somehow being seen as this tiny, magnificent force. like so much bigger than herself even though she doesn’t realize it quite yet.
“sour times”: ooh, this song. gosh, where to start? it has such a dangerous thread to it. it makes me think of them tiptoeing around one another in this eggshell sort of dance, not knowing who will break first. cHilLS
“broken boy solider”: someone give DIN DJARIN A HUG. this is his inner theme song on a constant loop.
“if you run”: wow—such a change of pace, but i love it. i think NH has such a grungy, metal feel to it (idk what i’m talking about) but also some folksy whimsy and this song fits that perfectly in my head. also: “fading into each other’s arms/he took her down to his hiding place” i don’t think that’s supposed to be romantic, but i’m pretending it is. sue me.
“give up the ghost”: this song makes me kinda emo. a din&reader to be sure. them both just wanting to be loved by each other, too afraid to ask. FUCK.
“black flies”: yES another folksy! the refrain at the end really gets me good. right in the heart.
“gasoline”: aw hell yeah. another reader BOP. she’s got such a bitchy vibe; i love it.
“dark”: shit… “I am the dark one in my bloodline/I fear my shadow like a beast/It's a lingering mellow that won't leave me/I fear one day it'll swallow me whole” is this…. her backstory in a nutshell? idk, you tell me.
“fuel to the fire”: this gives me reader addressing din vibes. like a pained loved letter to him.
“biting down”: to be frank, i don’t know what the fuck this song is talking about. but somehow, in relation to nighthawks, i get it.
“no one knows”: DIN. A DIN SONG. BECAUSE HE’S LIKE A BLANK BILLBOARD, IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE, IMPOSSIBLE TO READ. LOVE IT.
“virgin”: the chorus of this song… damn. i don’t know how to describe what it makes me imagine. them, together, still unsure of their future, just… trying?
“bully”: the line “bet you never though that I could be the one to let you down” makes me think of this as another song addressing din. woof.
“toxic”: britney, is that you? almost, but this version is better.
“master’s hands”: i feel like i’m ascribing every song to the reader and not enough to din….. but….. i just love her.
“hearing damage”: ooh! this is an interesting one! “You wish you felt better/In my eyes” feels quite din to me?
“howling”: oh fuuuuuuuuck they’re gonna be so in love one day and this is gonna be IT for them. “You were plush and I laid bare” DAMMIT
“troubled waters”/“patron saint hunter”: i just love the folksy vibe nighthawks can have at the same time as the metal/headbangers. i’m so glad that comes through the fic and i’m not the only one who felt that way.
“easy”: again, lorde with these confusing bangers that somehow just…. are chef’s kiss and fit perfectly to the mood of the fic. at least in my head!
“third eye”: this again feels like a song for the future of the fic, as things begin to unfold for them and they become more comfortable with one another.
“howl”: this definitely feels like a din&reader song! makes me wanna shimmy my shoulders hehe
“clockwork”: how do you find these songs that just fit them both so perfectly? there’s lines that could go for one or the other or for both and just… YOUR BRAIN
i cannot thank you enough for the gift of this playlist. it means more than you know. ❤️
Oh my god. OH MY GOD YOU WENT THROUGH EACH ONE??
Tumblr media
Whew. Okay.
I am so glad you like this!! Music is how I process things, and it's like the only thing I contribute to fandom. My spotify looks like a crazy person's. Seriously.
I just gahhhhh!! Thank you for taking them time to write all this out. And I have some other Thoughts ✨
1. go fuck yourself: sexy vibes, but like, you hate this person. big vibes for current nighthawks.
2. fresh blood: again, sexy vibes but the line "beautiful woman get out of my head" just reminds me of Din thinking about Reader in the last chapter.
3. help i'm alive: I mean, that's just Reader. But also Din. I feel like they are such good parallels of each other.
4. I come with knives: again, just Reader. I love her, your honor.
5. Angel of small death: reader is a pint sized power house and it breaks Din's brain. That is all.
6. Sour times: I feel like even though they don't get each other yet, Din and Reader are so similar. "Nobody loves me it's true, not like you do"
7. Broken boy soldier: so I was actially thinking of Reader for this, but it totally fits for Din too now that I'm thinking about it. But just the line "I'm throwing the childhood things away" reminds me of Reader and Jeelia.
8. If you run: "if you run, you better have a place to go" that is all.
9. Give up the ghost: they both have so much baggage to work through, it thought it was a good song.
10. Black flies: "I don't want to beg your pardon, I don't want to ask you why, if I was to go my own way, would I have to pass you by"
11. Gasoline: just. Sex with no feelings vibes. (For now 👀)
12. dark: hit the nail on the head. Just tons of past Reader thoughts.
13. Fuel to fire: I mean, that's just their relationship in a title so far.
14. Biting down: this whole song is a drug reference, but the vibe reminds me of just bracing yourself through the pain because it's all you know and it's better than the alternative
15. No one knows: "oh what you do to me, no one knows" fun fact - I like this version better than the original (QOTSA fans, don't come at me)
16. Virgin: this entire song is about how you can devote your life to something (creed/son, or family/sister) and it can still be taken away in an instant
17. Bully: "I like it when you play too rough, so tell me when you've had enough"
18. Toxic: I mean...the ultimate dark sexy vibes
19. Master's Hands: "Pull my strings and cut my rope, rattle my frame and shatter my ghost" works with Din teaching her hunting and also works for sexy times 😏
20. hearing damage: "a tear in my brain allows the voices in" and "they say you're getting better, but you don't feel any better"
21. howling: "Cold I fell into your skin on the night you let me under your sin. You had me howling"
22. troubled waters: big reader and her past vibes. "I must be one of the devil's daughters"
23. patron saint hunter: "keep the family in, keep the family sin" and "evil isn't in your core"...i just love Reader okay
24. Easy: "easy, pull out your heart to make the being alone easy" they're just two lonely people with so much baggage, don't look at me
25. Third eye: "don't make a shadow of yourself, always shutting out the light" and "Cause there's a hole where your heart lies, I see it with my third eye."
26. Howl: "you are the moon that breaks the night for which I have to howl"
27. Clockwork: one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. "Just like clockwork I react. You wind me up until I crack."
Aaaaaanywayyyy I'm just so happy you like it and I absolutely cannot wait for whatever you write next ✨

Listening: Go with the Flow - QOTSA
So I joined a mob because I felt lonely and they all share the same interests with me so whenever we’re home we’re always laughing & talking about movies that we love, etc.. Until one day the cops arrested us all & the detective apparently was someone I know from school who used to have a crush on me or something.
While waiting for trial, my family bailed me out so I got to go home and they didn’t seem too worried? In the end, I was sentenced with imprisonment for only ONE month while the rest of the gang got 10 years minimum so I was like whatttt??? but whatever la.. and then when I got out of jail, I ended up marrying the detective (lol) and then fast forward 10 years later, the mob boss got out and he surprised me at my home and said “well well well so we meet again..” and I was like shit man dah la Im married to the guy that busted the gang, he’s definitely going to think Im a traitor. Cut to another scene, my detective husband is being tortured at some car workshop.
What a dream huh?
I clearly watch too many mafia movies.

I had Tom ( Dad ) sit with Collin for a few and the next thing you know, I got the whole gang! I really love this photo. It’s outside my comfort zone, I had to flex my charm ( isn’t too hard to make me smile ) I had a great time. I only wish I had a towel and swim trunks because I love this beach so much! I’ll be back ASAP hopefully with my new friends.
