I was inspired by a great post about Nancy from @luthientinuvielss and it got me thinking about AIDS Activist Nancy Wheeler.

I've mentioned before how I headcanon Byler attending protests/joining ACT UP in the 90's after they get out of Hawkins.

But what if Nancy also became an activist in her own way?

As the post succinctly put it, Nancy is a truth-seeker who stands against injustice. She strives to be an advocate for the voiceless, the powerless and marginalized because she knows what it's like to be unheard.

I can't imagine that she would see all the deaths in the gay community (her brother and Will's community, in fact) being dismissed and forgotten and remain unfazed. She would be furious!!

Imagine her getting the scoop on the latest facts and myths about the disease, determined to shed light on the epidemic.

Interviewing the medical community and patients, breaking down the stigma surrounding the disease.

Investigating and doing exposés on politicians that stonewalled efforts to find a cure.

I can totally see her getting behind a cause like that. Plus, it could rebuild the Wheeler sibling bond, since she and Mike could find common ground on their shared passion for justice.

It genuinely confused me when people say we're "sexualizing little boys" when we talk about how we want Byler to be canon. Not only do these people not know the definition of "sexualizing", but they also don't even care to realize that most of the people invested in this ship, including myself, are their age. They say things like "Stop obsessing over a kids relationship, it's weird" when most Bylers are teens. It's incredibly rare to find dedicated Byler fans that are full blown adults. The majority of the people I meet are like, 13-17 years old. Not just that but the fact that these "little boys" are literally 15?? If you wanna get technical, Mike would only turn 15 in about a week from where we left the plot in s4, so take that point if you want but it basically means nothing. Now to the point of the "sexualizing" idea. You can still sexualize something no matter your age, but as far as i'm aware, wanting to see a loving relationship between two people who fit perfectly isn't sexualizing. The only thing I want is for them to realize they like each other, and MAYBE if we're lucky we get a kiss for extra reassurance. It's literally no different to when the other couples kiss, so leave us alone?? Anyway, I just wanted to rant about this VERY common "deflection" in Mileven vs Byler conversations. mike wanted to be in a relationship and was infatuated with el because he saw her as a super hero who gave him the most important thing in his life back to him; will.

like el's powers are obviously really cool and if you're a kid who's into super heroes and you come across someone like that in real life you're gonna be interested in them in one way or another. but during s1 mike's main concern was getting will back. will disappear and therefore mike lost will at that time.

when el revealed she could find will mike became more entranced by her because of what she offered to give him; his best friend back.

so basically mike is looking at this girl and thinking "wow, she has powers like a super hero and can bring back to me my best friend who has been by my side since i was 5 years old. and who is objectively the most important person in the world to me"

THIS IS WHY MIKE DECIDED HE LIKED HER AND THOUGHT HE WAS IN LOVE WITH HER

he wasn't in love with el but more he was interested in what she could give him and her abilities so she essentially became this, for lack of better terminology, "magical being"

and then when will was back and so was el, he became focused on el because he still viewed her in this way and didn't focus on will in the beginning of s3 because he essentially had nothing to worry about with will. but the second something went wrong with will! his attention was back on him again

Mike Wheeler fell in love when he was eight. He was showing his dinosaur figures to Will and the other boy was actually interested. As the played Dinosaur Kingdom, Mike's fingers kept brushing against Will's every time they grabbed for the same figure. It made his heart flutter.

But he knew it was wrong. He knew that one day he'd have to grow up and fall in love, even marry, a woman. The thought made him cry at night. He didn't want to marry a woman- he wanted to marry Will, his best friend. They were perfect for each other, Mike always thought. But he shoved the thought deep down.

The second time Mike fell in love, he was fourteen. He was in Will's room, on Will's bed in California, and he was smiling at the other boy. He fell in the again, with the same person. This time, instead of wanting to just spend the rest of his life with Will, he also wanted to do other things; hold hands, kiss, cuddle... Mike couldn't though because he had a girlfriend. He said he liked her, but deep down even he didn't believe that. He didn't like anyone like that, but Will. It always led back to Will.

The third time Mike fell in love, he was sixteen. Vecna was defeated and the world was normal, or as normal as it gets. Mike and Will were in Will's room, back in Hawkins, listening to music. The topic of the painting came up. He'd been pushing it off for as long as he can, but now Mike asked Will about why he lied.

Will didn't respond right away and he looked broken. "Mike," he finally said. "I'm crazy. That's why."

Mike's heart clenched. He grabbed Will's hand. "I'm crazy too. We're crazy together, just like when we were younger." The look Will gave him made his head flutter just like it did all those years ago. He knew he was in love again.

"Mike, you know why I made the painting," Will said. And Mike nodded. He did know, but he always told himself that he was wrong. "Mike, you know I love you."

Mike squeezed his hand. "I love you too."

And David Bowie sang in the background as Mike's palms became sweaty and his heart beat faster.

"I've loved you for a very long time," he said. "Years at least."

Will let go of his hand to hug him. "I love you so much." And he was crying into Mike's shoulder.

Mike hugged back and ruffled his hair. "Will, would you like to be my boyfriend?"

Will looked up, eyes wide. "Uh, yeah. Yes. I would like that a lot."

And that was the last time Mike Wheeler fell in love.
