it’s been 8 fucking years since wtnv episodes 49A and 49B Old Oak Doors came out but there’s still some extremely raw quotes from both that episode (and episode 46 Parade Day) that make me fucking cry and also make me feel a little better about living as a mortal being in this hell of capitalist decay just as much or even more so than they did 8 years ago and while we should and do talk about the gay rep nd the wide variety of other rep in night vale i think the real, rawest reason why wtnv is one of my favorite stories on earth even as it’s ongoing, and especially why the strex arc hits so hard, is that it says outright, yes, life is scary and yes, life hurts, and yes, all of this is temporary and yes, even despite all the pain and fear of life, the fact that the end of it is inevitable is TERRIFYING, but there is still beauty in that. “be proud of your place in the cosmos. it is small, and yet it is. how unlikely.” how can you hear that and not cry like a fucking baby about it? if you think that the point of wtnv is just merging horror and comedy in the magical realism style that it does, and “pretending that’s the epitome of horror” rather than recognising that it’s fucking satire, then you are not listening. wtnv is about the tragedy and beauty of the human experience. it’s also about being gay in the desert and making fun of the state of the USA, but it’s mostly about how terrifying and beautiful and painful and precious life is, and it’s about the beauty of a community of people who truly care for each other. honestly, how can you actually listen to even just the first 2-3 years of this podcast and miss that? it basically smacks you in the face every few episodes, ffs

Night Vale and Anxiety

“Are we living a life that is safe from harm?

Of course not. We never are.

But that’s not the right question.

The question is: are we living a life that is worth the harm?”

I just wanted to point out how Night Vale, with quotes like this, can be so calming to someone with anxiety. Here’s what Cecil’s saying:

Yes, your fear is valid. Yes, we may not be safe. But that’s not what we should be focusing on.

We should be focusing in the parts that make life worth living.

And that’s so incredibly validating so someone who fears so much, whether from trauma or stress or some other reason altogether. Night Vale takes you into a world where the danger is there, out in the open, you do not need to hide your fear of it. Fear is okay. But it does not need to define you.

It’s not what you fear that defines who you are, it’s what you live for. And how you make that life worth living.
