It Came From The Wastebasket #15: Rauisuchian Revolution
Pseudosuchians, or "croc-line archosaurs", are one of the two major lineages of archosaur reptiles, alongside the avemetatarsalians (pterosaurs and dinosaurs). Although today they're represented only by crocodilians, they were especially successful and diverse back in the Triassic – and it was only after a mass extinction took out most of them that the dinosaurs were able to rise to prominence for the rest of the Mesozoic Era.
A grouping of pseudosuchians traditionally known as "rauisuchians" had upright limbs in a distinctive "pillar-erect" hip arrangement. Many of these croc-relatives were large quadrupedal predators, but others developed bipedal theropod-like postures, with some so remarkably convergent that they were initially misidentified as ornithomimosaurs.
The first rauisuchians were discovered in the 1930s, represented only by fragmentary remains, and while they were initially recognized as being pseudosuchians their exact evolutionary relationships within that group were poorly understood for a long time. Over the next several decades they were classified with aetosaurs (early armored pseudosuchians), then ornithosuchids (even earlier pseudosuchians), and then erythrosuchids (not even pseudosuchians but an earlier type of archosauriform).
More complete fossil discoveries and better cladistic analysis methods in the 1980s led to them being classified as being very closely related to crocodylomorphs, with three main lineages recognized: the prestosuchids, the rauisuchids, and the poposauroids.
Tumblr media
The "prestosuchid" Prestosuchus chiniquensis, the rauisuchid Postosuchus kirkpatricki, & the poposauroid Effigia okeeffeae (not to scale)
But even by the end of the 20th century "Rauisuchia" had never actually gotten a formal definition, and it had very much become a wastebasket taxon for a variety of paracrocodylomorph pseudosuchians that didn't easily fit into any other major lineages.
In the 2000s renewed interest in rauisuchians' anatomy and evolutionary relationships led to increasing recognition that they weren't even a single defined group, with various species instead falling into different points along an "evolutionary grade". The poposauroids and rauisuchids still seem to be distinct lineages, but the "prestosuchids" were found to be polyphyletic, with some forming a grade between the other two "rauisuchid" groups and others turning out to not even be paracrocodylomorphs.
Tumblr media
And although the taxonomic concept of "Rauisuchia" as a distinct group has now been abandoned, the term "rauisuchians" does still remain in common use as an informal name for these animals – probably because it's much more concise than saying "non-crocodylomorph paracrocodylomorphs".

Dinofact #53
The largest carnivorous archosaur of late Triassic central Europe, Smok wawelski may be a rauisuchid (large predatory Triassic archosaur), prestosuchid (active terrestrial Triassic apex predator), ornithosuchid pseudosuchian (distant relative of crocodilians), or a primitive theropod dinosaur. However, its relation to other archosaurs has not been thoroughly studied, so its status as dinosaur, crocodile, or other remains a mystery.

Bowser time
Bowserosuchus (Bowser Crocodlie) B. Kooparex
Bowserosuchus is a type of Rauisuchidae, It lived in Early Cretaceous, Japan. However as most Rauischidea died out by the triassic period, it seems that this particular specimen had branched off from its taxonomy and it is placed within it’s own family branch.
Discovered in 1985 by Shigeru Miyamoto, at the time Mr. Miyamoto had found fragments of the specimen’s back and believed that it was a very large biped turtle like creature with large armored spikes. As the find was very fragmentary, bits of the spiked back and half of a femur, he had placed the specimen in under the turtle clade.
Then years later Yōichi Kotabe had discovered more fossils that showed more of the back, the back legs, and tail. On top of that discovery there was another similar specimen in a different country. As there was more information the shape of the creature had taken a different shape.
Goomba crab        G.Crab
These crabs had developed a face like structure to scare off predators like Bowserosuchus. However it seems that the local mushroom also has a similar facial structure. It is unknown why both, G.crab and G.Fungi have a symbiotic relationship.
however I hear crab is very delicious this time of year

rauisuchidae replied to your post “One of the problems I have with people calling Adam Sandler greedy is...”
i'd say stay away from emphasizing greed as a criticism, and focus instead on the misogyny and homophobia. Making new and colorful euphemisms for greed sounds p bad

oh sorry not that one! the one about him being the funniest character in all of comics history
rorschach hid inside of a refrigerator to ambush a dude, stole his one (1) friend’s sugar cubes and cologne and repeatedly broke the lock to his door, and admitted that he was a lil depressed when breaking fingers did not yield him the information he was looking for.  why do so many asshole nerds focus on him being like all ‘anti-hero’ and ‘cool’ and ‘vigilante wet-dream’ and shit when clearly his main appeal is how innately comic his entire existence is

Tumblr media
Postosuchus is known from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and North Carolina.
Tumblr media
Physical Description: Postosuchus was one the larger pseudosuchians of the Triassic, growing up to 6 meters (20 feet) in length. Its head was robust and rectangular in side view, with large spikelike teeth. The top of the skull has a flattened dorsal surface and roughened “brow ridges” that may have been covered with keratin in life. The body and tail were long and covered with osteoderms, which have prserved in the fossil record. Its forelimbs were much shorter than its hindlimbs and its hands were relatively small. Some of the fingers were slightly reduced in size, foreshadowing would happen to tyrannosaurs much later. The legs were longer, but shorter than those of theropod dinosaurs, giving Postosuchus a lower-slung stance. The hands and feet had five digits each.
Diet: Postosuchus was an apex predator. Its diet probably included dicynodonts, early dinosaurs, herbivorous pseudosuchians, and other archosauromorphs such as allokotosaurs.
Behavior: Based on how small the arms were relative to the hindlimbs, it is likely Postosuchus was bipedal, and probably even been an obligate biped based on the anatomy of its hips and limbs. It is not very well-built for pursuit, so Postosuchus was likely an ambush predator. It likely had well-developed senses of sight and smell. Like modern crocodilians, it may have been a largely solitary creature, with few Postosuchus in the area at a time. It is unknown whether or not it marked its territory with pee as in Walking with Dinosaurs.
Ecosystem: When Postosuchus lived, North America was arid, being inland on Pangaea. Most Postosuchus fossils come from the Chinle Formation of New Mexico and Arizona. Chinle was crawling with pseudosuchians: these include aetosaurs such as Typothorax and Desmatosuchus, the small herbivorous Revueltosaurus, the strangely coelurosaur-like Shuvosaurus, and the leggy “sphenosuchian” Hesperosuchus. Postosuchus also lived alongside early theropods like Coelophysis and Chindesaurus, the dinosauromorph Dromomeron, phytosaurs such as Smilosuchus, Leptosuchus and Machaeroprosopus, the bizarre archosauromorphs Trilophosaurus and Vancleavea, the long-necked tanystropheid Tanytrachelos, a drepanosaur, dicynodonts such as Placerias, cynodonts, lungfish, early sharks, and temnospondyls such as Koskinonodon and Apachesaurus. Postosuchus is also known from the coeval Dockum Group of Texas, which had many of the same fauna.
Meanwhile, in North Carolina, Postosuchus lived alongside other pseudosuchians such as Dromicosuchus and Stegomus, dicynodonts, the cynodont Plinthogomphodon, and temnospondyls. It would have been further inland, and thus even more arid.
Other: Sankar Chatterjee originally described Postosuchus in 1985 as the ancestor of tyrannosaurs. Unfortunately, Chatterjee is kind of an idiot. It was very soon after recognized to be an extinct relative of crocodilians. Chatterjee also referred several juvenile skeletons, which are now recognized as the adults of Shuvosaurus.

Name: Heather
Nicknames: Blue or Polka here, don’t really have one in real life (my name doesn’t seem to go for that)
Gender: lady, cis
Star Sign: Virgo
Height: 5′6 I think?
Sexual Orientation: pan
Hogwarts House: /eagle screeches/ (why isn’t the ravenclaw mascot a raven again??)
Favorite Color: Blue. Purple and green are nice too though. (But seriously I just noticed that my 3DS pokemon games all go for the blue scheme: X, Moon, Sapphire... so predictable).
Favorite Animal(s): Pets are great. Dogs are great and so are cats. And rabbits. And rats and mice and...anyway. In terms of wild animals I quite like Barn owls, and foxes and badgers. Squirrels are also fun to watch as are small birds. I also have a soft spot for snakes no-one seems to understand? Like in England I try and sell it as the fact being from Ireland I maybe find them more of a ‘novelty’ (since no snakes on that island) but like my parents are equally confused. Well you took me to zoos guys.
Average Hours of sleep: 7 I guess.
Cat or dog person: I love both but I guess dogs have the edge.
Favorite Fictional Characters: Sulley, Randall and Mike of Pixar. I quite like a lot of underutilised characters in Harry Potter, despite fanfic being th major reason for that. I really like Aang of ATLA too and I am like ‘Bring Bismuth back!!’ for SU but I also find Peridot hilarious and I think Amethyst has slightly edged in as my favourite of the original crystal gems.
Number of blankets I sleep with: Just one but it’s a thick one.
Favorite Singer/Band: I don’t know, I don;t really follow folks. I tend to maybe like 3 songs from someone and hate everything else they do. Currently I like some neontrees stuff because the beats are kind of fun.
Dream Trip: A year trip around anywhere honestly. It was once America but given... recent events no to that now, and Europe isn’t great either. Granted I guess in some ways that was always the case. and mostly it’s just realising it... wow this got depressing. Maybe doodle who I copy-pasted this from has a point about mountains and forests etc instead. A nice log cabin somewhere though not a tent (no frigging way) for like a month (but not during hunting season or busy tourist season).
Dream Job: Like I quite like my job currently when I’m not stressed out by it (I work outdoors) but I think an author or writer would be pretty great.
When was this blog created: Mid 2013- just before Monsters University came out.
Current number of followers: 452. I’m small potatoes hee.
When did your blog reach its peak?: My blog even had one?? Eh maybe when MU was at its height? Idk, it’s sad there’s a few mutuals who don’t seem to be on much any more or have left completely from that fandom.
What made you decide to make a Tumblr?: Monsters University. Like I never went on livejournal anymore and this is where the fandom was so...

Eyore or Owl
OMG .... I'm gonna do eeyore bc I love eeyore soooo much he’s v important to me .. my buddy
eeyore
first impression:I wish I could tell you what my first impression of eeyore was when I was like 3 n first saw winnie the pooh but unfortunately I cannot. I did always love eeyore though
impression now:my buddy!!! my friend!!!!!!! eeyore n i (rabbit) are rly similar in a lot of ways but it’s like we manifest it differently in how we act .... it’s nice. I love eeyore
favorite moment:AAAA there’s a part in the house at pooh corner (the book) when eeyore is doing that thing where he’s complaining abt how no one ever talks to him and rabbit is like “well i mean you never come to say hi to any of us, we’d all love to talk to you n you can drop in at any time” and eeyore is kind of quiet for a second and is like “you’re right, I need to come and go more” and something abt that moment is really like ?? nice to me???? bc it’s like ... me n eeyore are Friends n i’m reassuring him that we are.....
ALSO I love the part in the same book when tigger gets stuck in the tree n everyone’s trying to come up w/ an idea to get him down and piglet suggests everyone standing on eeyore’s back to try and reach him and eeyore says “and then if eeyore’s back snapped suddenly, then we can all laugh. ha ha! amusing in a quiet way, but not really helpful” and pooh’s like “would it actually break your back?” and eeyore says “that’s what would be so interesting. not being sure til afterwards” and it’s SO FUNNY ????? eeyore is so funny in the books i love him
idea for a story:Me n eeyore just hanging out having a nice time
unpopular opinion:can’t say there’s really any conflicting opinions in the winnie the pooh fandom folks
favorite relationship:I’m gonna keep saying it but me n eeyore ..... and also eeyore n tigger!!!! it’s cute when they’re hanging out in the movies n stuff ... i love it
favorite headcanon:eeyore and roo are good friends .. i can’t remember if there’s really anything w/ them two but roo is so earnest and nice i feel like they’d get along even if eeyore acts like he’s annoyed by overly enthusiastic ppl .. good stuff

garnidot
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying /i will ship them in hell
Overall they seem to work very well! Garnet can be remarkably patient and Peridot definitely seems attracted in some way and benefits from being in her presence. Tbh I do think Garnet thinks of Peridot as cute at least- and as a fusion of two small gems I think it’s possible Peridot sort of even reminds her of parts of her fused gems. Peridot is pretty analytical (like Sapphire) but she does have a lot of passion which can sometimes come out similarly to Ruby’s. (She also I think can panic in a way similar to Ruby). I think she genuinely finds Peridot as fun to be around too and Peridot finds her presence calming eventually.

Quickstrike for the character meme?
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would banghogwarts house: gryffindor and i am ride and die for this | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuffbest quality: his indomitable fighting spirit.  and his accent.worst quality: he’s bad at flirting and should probably stopship them with: ummmm who don’t i ship him with would be an easier question!  primarily silverbolt i guess, also rampage, lil bit dinobot, blackarachnia when silverbolt is also therebrotp them with: rampage again, sometimes blackarachnia, infernoneeds to stay away from: i don’t really have strong feelings bc his indomitable fighting spirits drives him to just hang out with anyone i believe.  misc. thoughts: it is absolutely wild that out of all the characters on beasts wars whom i love and adore and treasure and who had shit like character arcs and complexity, quickstrike ended up being my favourite.  horrendous.  i’d die for him.
