Man in a Suitcase: Web with Four Spiders (1.23, ITC, 1968)
"Why me? With your name all you have to do is pick up your telephone, you'd be up to your neck in nice, keen, young Harvard-trained security boys. Probably drum and bugle corps to boot."
"Yes, and those photographs would be in the FBI dossier."
"Or a private one. I could make copies. See what they'd buy me."
"Oh no, you've already answered that. My name is Norbert; you are a discredited American agent. No one will accept your word against mine."
"Good. But I'm expensive. I call it my self-respect bonus."

Taffin (1988)
My rating: 4/10
This combines the basic plot of an A-Team episode with the desire to be a Cool Grown Up Action Movie, with boobs and explosions and a body count, to rather jarring effect - plus it's set in the absolute ass end of Ireland, for some reason. Brosnan heroically digs into the scenery, and he does look very pretty, but he can't save this weird misshapen chunk of nonsense.

My Left Foot (1989)
Tumblr media
Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in My Left Foot is so good it cannot be ignored. For it alone, the film is worth seeing but it’s more than a nice little story about a poor, downtrodden man overcoming adversity. It’s a fully-rounded picture of a complex person and the mother who, despite everything, saw more in him than anyone else thought was possible.
Based on a true story, Christy Brown (played as an adult by Day-Lewis, by Hugh O’Conor as a child) is born in 1932 to a poor Irish family. Suffering from cerebral palsy, he is unable to speak, feed himself or move. Despite his father (Ray McAnally) never believing in him, his mother (Brenda Fricker, fabulous, emotional and moving) offers Christy constant love and support. Eventually, they discover that Christy can control one part of his body: his left foot.
When I hear about a film like this one, about a poor soul who suffered for years and was eventually recognized for what he was, I raise my defenses. “Here come the overly sentimental bits as the picture does everything but staple angel wings and a halo onto the poor man! You better think this film is one of the greatest of all time. If you don't, you’re as insensitive as every bully that ever tormented Christy!” That’s not My Left Foot. What initially makes Christy so interesting is the hardships he faces when he first learns to use his foot to write and later paint. Then, it’s the person he becomes that grips you. Aside from his disability, this is a man like any other: capable of being kind and loving, but also jealous, rude and obnoxious. A scene where he paints a portrait of his crush for Valentine's Day is devastating because you know she isn’t going to accept him for who he is. Your heart goes out to Christy until you see him at his meanest. Then, he’s a bottle-swirling drunkard who won’t listen to anyone.
There’s pain in this film when Christy is rejected, when he sinks into loneliness or when you see just how poor the family is. There is also a lot of joy. Things may not be rosy for the Browns, but as Christy grows and becomes able to express himself, he receives all the support from his siblings who include him in everything from games of “spin the bottle” to back alley football (he serves as their team goalie). You might expect to be teary-eyed when watching My Left Foot and you will be but not the way you expect. It isn't the suffering and struggles that move you; it's the moments when everyone is together as a loving family that will have your eyes all moist.
Daniel Day-Lewis treats us to a performance that never feels like a performance. The way he struggles with his body and uses his one foot to crawl around on the floor when he needs to call someone for help is so convincing you’d swear he met and studied the real man for years to get even the minutest details right. Then, there’s the way he speaks. His words are slurred and often incomprehensible. Resist the urge to turn on the subtitles. You’ll only be able to make out about half of what he says (at least until he starts taking speech therapy). That's the point. It shows just how caring his mother is. The fact that she has taken the time to understand his speech pattern leaves you shaken, and you can gather what they're talking about from her responses anyway.
I’m not sure My Left Foot is the kind of film you’d come back to over and over. Spectacular performances or not, it's just not that kind of movie. What it is, is a story you will never forget. (On Blu-ray, June 17, 2018)

Taffin (1988)
In today's review, I visit Ireland to fight corrupt land deals. As I attempt a #positive review of the 1988 film adaptation of Taffin #PierceBrosnan #RayMcAnally #AlisonDoody #JeremyChild #DearbhlaMolloy #JimBartley #AlanStanford #GerardMcSorley
We often root for the underdog, the David overcoming the Goliath, it’s even easier when the Goliath is being unscrupulous, and when David has a little help for himself. In 1988, a taut thriller about corrupt undertakings, justice and defending your home was adapted from its bookish origins to the big screens, along with some familiar personalities in Taffin. The quaint village of Barrymoran is…

Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot (Jim Sheridan, 1989) Cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Benda Fricker, Ray McAnally, Fiona Shaw, Ruth McCabe, Hugh O'Conor, Cyril Cusack. Screenplay: Shane Connaughton, Jim Sheridan, based on a book by Christy Brown. Cinematography: Jack Conroy. Production design: Austen Spriggs. Film editing: J. Patrick Duffner. Music: Elmer Bernstein. Daniel Day-Lewis won his first Oscar for My Left Foot, with a tour-de-force performance that almost guaranteed him the award. As Christy Brown, limited by cerebral palsy to the creative and expressive use of only his left foot, he struggles for the kind of acceptance by the outer world that he finds in his large working-class Irish family, achieving it finally through painting and writing. It's the kind of film that's usually called "inspiring," but Day-Lewis makes it clear that Brown was something of a handful to deal with -- a human figure, not an object of sentimental concern or pity. It's easy to overlook, in all the attention given to Day-Lewis, the performance of Hugh O'Conor as the young Christy.

57th Annual CMA Awards/16th Annual Academy OF Country Music Honors/People's Choice Country Awards
So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would like to talk about the latest edition of the CMA Awards (This time the 57th Annual). They originally aired on Wednesday November 8th, 2023 at 8pm EST (Eastern Standard Time) on ABC. And they were co-hosted by Luke Bryan & Peyton Manning. Let's first see what they played for us on this night.
Performances (Who played and what they played for us). Jelly Roll featuring Wynonna Judd - Need a favor. Luke Bryan performing a medley of hits - Huntin', fishin' and lovin' every day -> One margarita -> That's my kind of night -> Play it again -> Country girl (Shake it for me). Ashley McBryde - Light on in the kitchen. Cody Johnson - The painter. Morgan Wallen & Eric Church - Man made a bar. Luke Combs - Where the wild things are. Chris Stapleton - White horse. Jordan Davis - Next thing you know. Lainey Wilson - Wildflowers and wild horses. Dan + Shay - Save me the trouble. Kelsea Ballerini - Leave me again. The War and Treaty - That's how love is made. Tribute to Jimmy Buffett (Kenny Chesney & Mac Mcanally) - Mother Mother Ocean. Tribute to Jimmy Buffett (Zac Brown band & Alan Jackson) - Adios my friend. Tribute to Jimmy Buffett (Alan Jackson & Zac Brown band) - Margaritaville. Old Dominion & Megan Moroney - Can't break up now. Carly Pearce with Chris Stapleton - We don't fight anymore. Tribute to Joe Diffie (Hardy & Morgan Wallen) - John Deere Green. Tribute to Joe Diffie (Hardy, Morgan Wallen, & Post Malone) - Pickup man. Little Big Town (LBT) with Tanya Tucker - Delta Dawn. Jelly Roll with K. Michelle - Love can build a bridge (Judds Tribute).
And who won what awards and who according to MY MSR (Midnight Star Report), who should have won. Single of the Year goes to Luke Combs - Fast car (Good choice, could have also gone to Jordan Davis - Next thing you know). Song of the Year goes to Tracy Chapman - Fast car (Another good choice for this). Vocal duo of the Year goes to Brothers Osborne. (This one should have gone to Dan + Shay). Vocal group of the year goes to Old Dominion (No competition this year). Music video of the year goes to Hardy & Lainey Wilson - wait in the truck. Musical video of the year goes to Hardy & Lainey Wilson - wait in the truck. New artist of the year goes to Jelly Roll (The only competition for him would be Parker McCollum). Album of the year goes to Lainey Wilson - Bell bottom Country. (This should have gone to Luke Combs or Morgan Wallen). Female vocalist of the year goes to Lainey Wilson. She had the most success of any of the female singers this year. Male vocalist of the year goes to Chris Stapleton. This should have gone to Luke Combs or Morgan Wallen. Entertainer of the year goes to Lainey Wilson. This should have gone to Luke Combs or Morgan Wallen.
And that's a wrap for the Show. And on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would give this show a 3 out of 5 stars. There was a lot of people that probably should have won or shouldn't have won as usual. And they don't seem to let as many people perform their songs during their show. Now we need to bounce on to our next award show we will be reviewing. And that will be the 16th Annual Academy of Country Music Honors.
Tumblr media
16th Annual Academy of Country Music Honors

Billy Ray with Firerose & Travis Denning - Long haired Country Boy. ACM International Award - Kane Brown. Lee Brice - Like I love Country Music. ACM Artist-Songwriter of the Year goes to Hardy. Bailey Zimmerman - Signed, Sober you. ACM Lifting Lives Award goes to Troy Vollhoffer. Dennis Quaid - Fallen. ACM Icon Award - Mike Dungan. Jordan Davis - Buy dirt with Anne Wilson. ACM Poet's Award - Clint Black. Lady A - A bad goodbye. ACM Poet's Award - Mary Chapin Carpenter. Trisha Yearwood - This shirt. ACM Poet's Award - K.T. Oslin. Brandy Clark - 80's Ladies. ACM Service Award - Bill Mayne. Sara Evans - Born to fly. ACM Songwriter of the Year goes to Ashley Gorley. Carly Pearce & Emily Shackleton - What he didn't do. ACM Icon Award - Tim McGraw. Brett Young - Don't take the girl. Nelly - Over and over. ACM Triple Crown Award - Chris Stapleton. The War and Treaty - Cold. Hailey Whitters - Everything she ain't.
And this show with the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would give this show a 2.75 out of 5 stars. There were a lot of people who got awards that I don't really know about. But it was a short show to highlight some careers in Country Music. And onto the first ever People's Choice Country Awards.
Tumblr media

Toby Keith - Don't let the old man in. Hardy - Truck bed. Collaboration song of the 2023 goes to Save me from Jelly Roll featuring Lainey Wilson. This should have gone to Kane Brown & Kaitlyn Brown - Thank God. Social Country Star of 2023 goes to Blake Shelton. Kelsea Ballerini - Over for me or A mountain with a view. Country Champion - Wynonna. Wynonna - I saw the light in your window tonight -> How'd you get to me? Music video of 2023 goes to Hardy featuring Lainey Wilson - wait in the truck. Song of 2023 goes to Jelly Roll - Save me.
And that's a wrap for the first ever People's Choice Country Awards. This one I would give a 2.5 out of 5 stars. This one, they really could have gone without even doing the award show. There is already a lot of Award shows out there. Thanks for taking the time to read all this reviews for 3 award shows. See ya all next time.
