ES Rarepair Week 2023 Day 2: Childhood/AU
Pairing: Madara Mikejima/Tatsumi Kazehaya
Word count: 663
Notes: So uhm. I'm trying to write in the style of Jose Saramago because I've been reading the Gospel According to Jesus Christ so this is literally two big paragraphs and I am sorry but it was a lot of fun to write so! This will hopefully be part of a much larger fic continuing in this style so it will definitely be and feel unfinished. Enjoy!
---
Since Tatsumi Kazehaya was a young boy, he knew he had to hide his faith. His parents had instilled in him a sense of fear since birth, that they were persecuted for their beliefs and he should never tell anyone about them. Hide yourself so you can continue to praise the Lord. Tatsumi didn’t understand this very well, but he continued to remove his religious iconography whenever he left the house, hanging up a cross necklace by the door before he left, but that’s something we can look at later. For now, we see Tatsumi Kazehaya as a young boy, on one of the rare days out with his family. They are going to a local aquarium that he had seen a pamphlet for a few weeks ago. What’s an aquarium, he asked his parents. It’s where they keep sea animals on land. But don’t they die without water? They keep them in tanks and take care of them, so don’t worry. Okay. He would pull out the pamphlet and look at it, trying to read the complicated words on the page before giving up. He was only five years old, after all, we shouldn’t expect him to be able to read something as complicated as this. His father picked it up and read out the names of some of the advertised exhibits. Squids, dolphins, sharks, seahorses. There are horses in the sea? They’re named that because their heads look like horses.
Tatsumi is holding his father’s hand as they walk through the aquarium, pointing out some of the different animals mentioned in the pamphlet. Tatsumi presses his face to the glass tank as children are known to do and follows a large and slow fish with his eyes. There are many brightly colored fish dancing around it, but Tatsumi’s eyes are glued to the large and slow one and he doesn’t notice as the crowd around him shifts and changes until he pulls away and realizes his father is nowhere to be found. Tatsumi’s heartbeat pounds in his chest as he tries to find a familiar face in a sea of strangers until he runs into another child. He looks about the same age as Tatsumi and he relaxes instantly. Are you lost, the other boy asks, grabbing Tatsumi’s hand and pulling him away from the crowd. I think so. Who were you here with? My mom and dad. What do they look like? My dad has hair like mine, he points to his head of mint green hair, and my mom has the same eyes. He talks a little too mature for his age, but then again, so does the boy who found him. Can you tell me your name, Tatsumi asks. Madara, and yours? Tatsumi. Nice to meet you Tatsumi-san. Madara pulled Tatsumi around again, walking through the different tunnels like he knew the place well. Do you live in the aquarium, Tatsumi asks as they pass through another room filled with fish. No, but I’m friends with the owner’s son. Is he nice? He’s interesting, but I don’t know if nice is a word to describe him. How so? If you met him you’d know. Can I meet him? Maybe someday, but they keep him pretty guarded. Tatsumi didn’t say anything after that and instead pondered why a child like him would be kept under such close watch, though he might realize he was in a similar situation if he had any awareness of how different his childhood was from most. It took a few more turns through some less crowded rooms before Madara finally stopped, hand still holding Tatsumi’s. Where are we? Somewhere we can wait for your family. How will they find me? Well don’t you ask a lot of questions. Wouldn’t you? I guess. So how will my parents find me? They just will, I don’t know how it works but they’ll find you here. Will you wait with me? I’m not supposed to. Can you?

13 Books Meme
Since @kuwdora asked...here are my answers :D
1) The Last book I read: So I'm a Spider, so What? Vol 13. This series has been dragging on for *years* for me. It isn't bad, I'm just slow and busy. I am on Vol 14 right now and there are only 16, so I could finish in a week if I motivated myself. Each book is only ~250 pages. I'll finish soon.
2) A book I recommend: Death With Interruptions by Jose Saramago
3) A book that I couldn’t put down: The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more): The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri
5) A book on my TBR: The Worm Ouroboros by Eddison
6) A book I’ve put down: This is tricky I'm really mule headed with books and will force myself to read it to the point of hating things :3. The last one I recall was Oyasumi Pun Pun (Good Night Pun Pun) because it made me severely depressed and I couldn't go on. It was too real. I've also done this maybe 3 or 4 times with the Eye of the World.
7) A book on my wish list: The Locked Tomb Trilogy -- I should read these after the spider book :3.
8) A favorite book from childhood: Anything Redwall by Brian Jacques. I have very fond memories of Marlfox because I think that was the first one I read. But Loamhendge too since I got it for a Christmas give
9) A book you would give to a friend: The Aleph and Other Stories by Borges or Arrival by Ted Chiang. (The former inspired the latter in a lot of ways and the short story format is so well done by these two and so clever!)
10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own: Not sure if I have anything here.
11) A nonfiction book you own: Damned to Fame: The Life of Samuel Beckett by James Knowlson.
12) What are you currently reading: So I'm a spider, so what Vol 14. Hurr hurr.
13) What are you planning on reading next? Ok Its really vol 15 and 16 after the previous question. But I did get the very pretty box set for A Series of Unfortunate Events and should read those and I've had the Beatrice Letters for ages to read as well. This is in order to edit better but also I have a plan to do a series of long form tumblr posts comparing Dante's Inferno to that series.
I need to tag people now... that is the hardest part. I suppose I will go, if they want to participate, with @littlestsnicket @phenoct and @tangentiallly for variety (I know what some of you read fandom wise, but outside -- well I know that a bit too...)

Psychologically focused or something that's more on mental health like Normal People, thrillers or crime, like Fyodor's and Jane Austen's. Also, fantasy like Shadow and Bone, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Last but not the least books that has a understandable development not the kind where everything just escalated in just 3-5 chapters.
Or anything really that you like 😭 i go with any kinds of books really as long as it piques my interest and my cup of tea
Oh the last book that made me go "oh wow" was Secret History by Donna Tart (I'm convinced that I'm like very late to the party, but if you're like me, I'd give it a go😁)
I finished The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, it's basically a sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, I quite liked it but they're dystopian so I'm not sure if that's your cup of tea❤️ And I started on Circe by Madeline Miller just today, it looks very promising! ❤️ And after that one, the next book on my list is Blindness by Jose Saramago, I heard really good things about it ❤️
So yeah my reading order is like all over the place 😂 But I really like John Fowles' works, (please check the trigger warnings for them) so I recommend his books if you're into post-modern literature ❤️

📕 — favorite book/series?
🧶 — any non-writing hobbies/interests?
🎧 — do you write while listening to music/podcasts/videos/etc, or do you need total silence?
📕 — favorite book/series?
it's simply a mistake to give me a chance to talk about books skjnkfjsj i won't shut UP. i will try to keep this brief, though
i think my current all-time favorite series is avery & carter by shane carrow. i really am someone who doesn't like historical fiction much so i guess that's why it's stuck with me, because it's an outlier of my usual tastes, but i just love the supernatural/historical blend and i love the main characters <3 they are sooo fun. the books are so cozy and comforting to me fr
some favorite standalones are gods of jade and shadow by silvia moreno-garcia, american gods by neil gaiman (okay technically it's part of a series, but, i'm considering it on its own since i haven't read anansi boys & i think the two can be read independent of each other), death with interruptions by jose saramago, slaughterhouse five by kurt vonnegut, the girl who loved tom gordon by stephen king, the binding by bridget collins, the great passage by shion muira, and lord of the flies by william golding.
🧶 — any non-writing hobbies/interests?
soccer... i can't play anymore but i tend to obsessively watch. if that's not obvious to anyone who talks to me for more than two minutes skjnfdskjfds. i want to get into woodworking but i just don't think i have the patience
🎧 — do you write while listening to music/podcasts/videos/etc, or do you need total silence?
it depends on what mood i'm in. sometimes i'll have a documentary playing. or music (country or metal), sometimes i need it to be quiet (when i'm feeling really sick and struggling to concentrate). just depends on when my brain wants to work <3

right back atcha! 1. who is your favorite author—not Gabriel García Márquez, since I know he's a big favorite—but then, 2. which is your favorite book that Gabo wrote, and then 3. what's a book you read recently that you like?
Hmmm. I'd have say my favorite author is Jose Saramago. His books read like multiple streams of consciousness - even though he ignored grammar mechanics like punctuation and capitalizing the beginning of new sentences. Yet oddly enough, it shows how the absence of established grammar in these books, doen't hinder the narrative.
Most books were critical social commentaries, but he made it relatable by putting regular, everyday people in the heart of the madness. (I recommend Cain, Blindness, and Death with Interruptions)
My fave Gabo book? Another hard question :) Interestingly enough, it's a compilation of newspaper articles he wrote during his time as a journalist in the 70s. I've only ever managed to find them in Spanish - there are several volumes. Essentially, they give us a look into what was happening in Latin America at the time, through the eyes of a man that would later go on to write novels and stories inspired by those events.
And finally, this past month and a half, I spent my time re-reading the Harry Potter books and had a lot of fun. But besides that, I am also reading Vilette by Charlotte Bronte. I tend to prefer dark books, but so far Charlotte has kept me hooked.
Thanks for asking 🖤

2. top 5 books of all time?
Answered this prior, so I'll copy over my list (in no particular order):
The Trial, by Franz Kafka
Blindness, by Jose Saramago
The Gospel according to Jesus Christ, by Jose Saramago
Doctor Faustus, by Thomas Mann
Steppenwolf, by Herman Hesse
Can you tell I really like magical realism? :)) Honorable mentions are also The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (this one's a personal favorite of mine), The Stranger by Albert Camus, The Aleph and Other Stories by Jorge Luis Borges, A Thousand Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, The Palace of Dreams by Ismail Kadare, The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami, and Perfume: The story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind. Really liked Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn too.
3. what is your favourite genre?
Probably magical realism, as mentioned. I really like books that take fantasy concepts and explore them in profound and unexpected ways -- which is why Jose Saramago has to be one of my favorite authors. Double points if it gets dark as hell, and shows both the good and the worst of humanity. I also enjoy crime novels, thrillers, detective stories. Loved Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot stories, as a kid and a teenager.
12. did you enjoy any compulsory high school readings?
...Myeah, some of them, though you'll likely know none of them. I grew up in Romania, so the compulsory readings were all Romanian authors. But hey, maybe this is an occasion to rec something!
The Hatchet, by Mihail Sadoveanu
Forest of the Hanged, by Liviu Rebreanu
The Lucky Mill, by Ioan Slavici
The Procustean Bed, by Camil Petrescu

tag meme: list 3-5 snippets of literature/media that live in your head rent-free to the point where you have them memorized; write them down from memory, no cheating allowed!
Tagged by @yibobibo thank you for the tag Aamna! xoxo
1. So I killed. So I maimed. So I destroyed one innocent life after another. Aren’t I a human being? Don’t I yearn and ache and shop? Don’t I deserve love... and jewelry?  - Addams Family Values  (I like to act this out when I’m alone with only my dog to judge me)
2. You have gone too far. You have married Fester. You have destroyed his spirit. You have taken him from us. All that I could forgive. But, Debbie... pastels?  - Addams Family Values
(I’m cheating because I have watched this movie A LOT of times. An embarrassing number of times. I have a lot of the dialogue memorized. But it’s really funny and it’s my comfort movie, so...
also by media...are songs included? I hope so because I’m about to add a few lines from a song that’s been on repeat because it’s really funny.)
3. He's just a boy and I'm just a girl. Can I make it any more obvious? We are in love, haven't you heard how we rock each other's world!!! -  i’m sorry but it’s really fun to sing out loud and I find joy in it. I find even more joy in the title. Sk8er Boi!! Amazing.
4. If I’m sincere today, what does it matter if I regret it tomorrow? - Blindness by Jose Saramago. It’s one of my favorite books that I reread at least once a year, so of course I have a few lines memorized.
5. I love you as certain dark things are to be loved, in secret, between the shadow and the soul - Sonnet XVII Pablo Neruda I see this quote a lot here on tumblr, but never the part that I like most. I was going to add it only to realize I don’t remember the words since I rarely read Neruda in english.
an extra one:
LWJ holding his 🐔 out to WWX: It’s all for you!!
Tagging: @jeynepoole @garcianunier @lan-xichens @midnightinjapan @lordsandladiesofthesilverscreen @lanwangjs @fengqing @elysean (ONLY IF YOU WANT TO OF COURSE)

For the fanfic ask game! 👖 and 🧠
Hi @arwamachine, thanks for the ask!
👖 Are you a planner, plantser, or pantser? Is it consistent? I'd say I'm a planster! It depends on the complexity of the story, really! For longer, more complex casefics I tend to outline things in my head, at least 2-3 chapters ahead, while knowing how the story ultimately ends for each of the characters. Not knowing what's lying ahead slows down my writing because I become hesitant and then get stuck.
🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?
I have a doc called 'Hide and Seek' that, so far, contains about 500 words. It's the seed of an idea about Sherlock's many encounters throughout his life with death, told by death herself. It's VERY different from everything else I've written so far, with a slight hint of paranormal. It's a bit of a mix of two inspirations: The X-Files episode 'Tithonus' and ‘Death with Interruptions’ by Jose Saramago as well as the concept of Sherlock Holmes (the literary character) being immortal.
I'm not there yet, as far as 'Hide and Seek' goes :)
-
My ask box is open!
💖 What do you like most about your own writing?
😐 What embarrasses you most about your own writing?
👻 What is one WIP you think you may never pick back up?
👀 Do you have any WIPs that you would never let see the light of day? If yes, what are they about?
📥 What is your fave fic to receive comments/messages on?
✏️ Do you write every day?
🖊 Post a snippet from a current WIP.
🏅 What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc).
😈 Is there anything you enjoy doing that you think your readers hate?
🌙  What time of day do you prefer to write? Why?
👖 Are you a planner, plantser, or pantser? Is it consistent?
📊 Current number of WIPs
👨‍👧‍👧 Do you tell people in real life that you write fic?
🌝 Who is one character you haven’t yet written for that you would like to?
📝 What is one growth area you have for your writing?
📚 Do you read your own fic?
🌈 What inspired you to write [insert fic here]?
🤔 What is the hardest part of writing fic?
🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?
💻 Do you do research for your fics? What’s the deepest dive you’ve done?
✨ Choose three adjectives to complement your own writing.
💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?
🍰 Name one of your fave comfort fics (doesn’t have to be your all time fave).
👩‍🏭 If one of your fics was going to get you arrested, which one and why?
⏰ Do you spend more time reading fic, writing fic, or do you do both equally?
💋 [Freeform - what is something you want to know about one of poster’s fics?]

Why not  giving up on a country
I am never a fan of being blind when you love a country, which is mostly understood as “hatred”.
What I know is being a loyal friend, or lets say good friend, means telling your friend kindly if s/he is doing something wrong without judging her/him. Because everyone has their own ethos in life. Yet there are certain situations you can judge and even try stopping him or her doing the wrong thing, such as drug addiction. Because there are certain things that are absolutely harmful.
To me this is exactly similar to being a good citizen in a country. If you keep staying blind and see only the good sides of a country this means you really are a bad citizen. First of all, because there is no country on earth without any mistakes and wrongs. Second, being a good citizen means trying to improve others’ lives also. And all of these mean, you have to open your eyes instead of closing them to bad sides and living in the good. Because you should be after making that country a better place not because of a nationalistic point of view but because of humanity.. In order to decrease the number of people who are suffering. So to me, any country you live in, you can try to contribute and try to improve people’ lives
Yet because I am so in love with Kemal Ataturk and his principles and revolution which saved many people from being seen as slaves or servants of the Sultanate; I was always after trying to continue his revolution and principles for the current and next generations. Because a peaceful country in the area would help other countries to be in peace also. So all my life why I was so into politics was because of this.
But living almost 5 years out of my own country and observing how it changes or how stupid actually the people are mostly really brought me to my limits I think. When I was living in Turkey I was thinking “these strange people are minorities, so we can protect our country.” I think it was because I was in the country. I was with my friends, I was in my comfortable zone with people who have similar values with me. But now what I see on twitter each and every day for 5 years is the increasing percentage of idiots (I mean seriously I am not talking about a political party supporters or any wing.. It is pure stupidity from right wing to left wing.)
I think it was somehow last year for the first time ever in my 36 years of life, I thought there was no chance that this country may change to a better place. I must be around September - why and how I do not remember. And I decided I don't wanna even teach to these people. Because they are not eligible to understand. They “believe” and that “belief” make their eyes blind to “truth”.
What I can say is, when I was literally 2-3 years old, I remember my Dad telling me “dogmas are wrong. Living with dogmas are wronger. Because it requires “believing” and “beliefs” cannot be changed. Beliefs makes you blind. Blindness won't let you to search for the truth. But if you want to know the truth you should always ask “why” and search for the answers by yourself. Don't believe what people say. Always question what is told unless you find the same answer by yourself.”  (You may think this is somehow a strange and heavy talk to be done with a 3 year old child but I absolutely remember being happy when he was telling me these kind of things. :D it is may be because of him when I ran away from nursery school at the age of 3 or 4 ahahahahaha :) anyways. my memories are really really going back to early days of my life and even sometimes I tell my mom some stuff and she always questions how come I do know these..)
So majority of the people in Turkey seems to become blind more and more each and everyday and they don't seem to question what is being told to them are right or wrong. To be honest you can change people and save them from being blinds at this level however there is a “combo” for these people. They believe the wrongs which were shown to be “literally” wrong. And when you show the proof they say “ this may be a proof but ...”
So after last year September to today I started losing my blindness and started seeing how stupid they are, better. And at this level I found out they are so stupid that their stupidity makes me angry now. I seriously feel angry when I read what day write on news papers, on social media etc. Some people are so “full of hope” and they say “we can change their minds by telling them the truth many times without giving a break” and I do say that the ones who say these should be in mind 20s. I was like that. I was trying to explain and tell and I was trying to do this to people who had not been exposed to this disgusting mannerless rulers this long. So I saw nothing changed. And I do see now it is worse.
To be honest, if I would try my best for people I don't want my efforts to be lost in the black holes of mental blindness. And there is a mental blindness in Turkey now..
Anyways
All of these reminds me 2 things deeply
1. Jose Saramago -  Blindness
2.  Edmond Rostand - Cyrano de Bergerac
nothing more. Neither 1984 nor others but these two.
