How Funding Affected my Journalism Jobs
The different places I’ve worked as a journalist, and in related fields, have all had different funding. Here are my experiences at different places–and it seems to me that grant-funded stuff is the best.
Internship at Nat Geo
Grants sponsored both of the other interns, but not me. Nat Geo makes a lot of its money through things like books at TV.
Mine was low-paid, but probably normal for an internship in 2016? LOVED the experience. Freelance at Nat Geo afterward was MUCH better paid. $14/hour part-time. IDK how much the grant-funded interns made. 2016.
Fellowship at PBS Newshour
A grant from the National Science Foundation funded me, but PBS is state-sponsored media. Interestingly, that’s a huge red flag in China and Russia, but I found the US-funded Public Broadcasting Service very fair to its subjects. Good experience, but even worse pay, at $13/hour full-time. 2016-2017
Job at Newsweek
Their funding is from clicks. This place was crazy bad and paid garbage. Everyone hated it and almost everyone quit, unless they were being fired for making a living wage. Some people even got fired for accurately reporting on the company itself on assignment from their editors–there was no obscuring it, that was cited as their reason for termitation. Newsweek is Hellfire and damnation. I suspect the nonsense demand for 5 stories/day/person and silly demand that we make them go viral stemmed from the following: the fact that the company primarily made its money from clicks and higher-ups didn’t appear to care about the long-term reputation of the company or its reporters, and perhaps an ego-fueled refusal to try to understand what actually got clicks. $39k/year. 2017-2018
Freelance at VOX
Funded by clicks/ads and grants at the time, but halfway through they started a contribution campaign. The difference I noticed between VOX and Newsweek was that VOX practices were smarter and they actually paid attention to analytics and sane business practices. Also, it's much easier to qualify for and get grants if you're actually doing good journalism, so I don't believe that Newsweek's policy of "lots of garbage" was actually business-savvy in any way.
Vox was a good experience, even though I wasn’t working as a journalist, but doing SEO/social media for journalists. $35/hour, then $50/hour part-time. Then I was laid off due to the pandemic. 2019-2020
Freelance at Alzheimer's Association
Remote, not really journalism, but I liked it anyway. Nonprofit, so, funded by donations and grants. $65/hour part-time. 2021
Job at Bay Nature
My job was entirely funded by a grant. Odd situation–I got the grant and I could bring it to any legit journalism employer. Bay Nature was supposed to contribute 40% of my salary but flexibility happened and they just paid health insurance and such. They got basically no money at all from clicks, like, pennies a year. Not much from subscriptions. They have fundraisers, and at the time, there were 3 writers/editors and 2 fundraisers on staff. Later they hired another writer whose entire salary was paid by a philanthropist, and then I’m told they got another salary funded by a UC Berkeley journalism grant program. So, like half of their editorial staff was grant-funded.
Great experience, but low pay for the Bay Area. $50k/year, all from Poynter-Koch, 2021-2022.
Freelance at Politifact
A nonprofit and they probably get lots of grants. My particular position was also funded by a grant entirely. Loved it. $250/article fact check. 2022.
Book
REALLY love it. $50k is from MIT Press, which is a not-for-profit, and it gets some grants and endowments. Then I got $56k from a grant from the Sloan Foundation on top.
Future?
I also got $500 (plus gas and hotels) to attend a day of learning with a program called Investing in Wyoming’s Creative Economy, and that means I’m one of 100 people eligible to apply for 10 $25k grants for future projects. The idea is to support creatives to stay in Wyoming and have sustainable businesses here. Maybe do some art that will bring in tourists.
_____________________
Note that a grant sort of does, and sort of doesn’t, mean free money. It means money to support a project that usually has to have a mission and a public good, like educating the public. You don’t pay these back, and the org giving the grants doesn’t require a percentage of the profits or anything. But, for instance, the $50k grant from Poynter-Koch was more like a gift to Bay Nature, so they could pay me, and I worked for a year to actually have the funds.
However, I’m not yet convinced that there is any objectively good funding model to ensure the most fair and accurate journalism. In theory, the capitalistic ones would be the best, but the public desire to read inflammatory stories about how their political enemies are evil, or a different generation is full of idiots, adversely affected the accuracy of headlines at Newsweek IMO.
You might think that the worst funding source would be Poynter-Koch, which is a program run by Poynter and funded by the Charles Koch Institute. But neither Poynter nor Koch even asked me to tell them what I was writing, let alone try to stop me from writing it. (Poynter hosted mentor-led auxiliary groups to talk about our careers/lives and such, so the topics of our articles came up sometimes if we chose to share that.)
Anyway, I’m thinking of writing an article on how funding models affect journalism, for better and worse. There are some high-profile examples of grant funding causing harm. But for now, the above is my experience–pretty much all good, except not enough funding sometimes.

Suburban Nightmare The Scariest Part About Moving to the Suburbs is the Fear of Having to Move Back to the Hood
I grew up in the "hood" of Northwest Ohio and throughout my childhood I was repeatedly told by teachers and social workers "you have to have a college degree." To survive, to live a good life, or to go on vacation once a year, they never specified why we needed to have one - the adults just told us this from the third grade onward in a tone that was serious and haunted us as we clawed our way to high school graduation. Well I moved to the suburbs to pursue a college education, received my Bachelor of Arts, but then wound up jobless for the first 2.5 months after graduating, fearing that I may have to return to the life I thought I left behind in the hood.
This is what it was like.
Part 1/3: Restless
Tumblr media
The first few days were not too bad.
I finished school on a Tuesday and had the graduation ceremony the following Saturday. Though I was anxious to begin working full time again after taking almost a month off to focus on school, I forced myself to appreciate having a few days to catch my breath after completing the toughest semester of my undergrad career - under the assumption that my boss would call me back to give me my schedule as promised.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But they never called me back.
I texted. I called. I emailed. Nothing.
I reached a supervisor in my department who promised they would make sure my employer called me once they returned from vacation, but the supervisor also warned me "if you get a new opportunity, take it, because I'm not sure what [they] are planning with you."
I texted. I called. I emailed - for weeks.
Still nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feeling scorned, neglected as an employee, and painfully confused, I knew I shouldn't go back; not only was I completely ghosted, but this happened on top of several occasions prior when I was not paid on time, not paid the proper amount, and even scammed by a company hacker. And I knew I didn't deserve the shame of going back to a place begging for employment where I had already been so mistreated.
So the job search began.
Part time. Part-time remote. Entry level. Entry level temporary. Full-time summer. Freelance. Temporary full-time summer.
The amount of key terms I came up with to expand my search for jobs ought to have earned me a certificate in SEO optimization. Within a matter of weeks I had easily applied for hundreds of jobs; some remote, some on-site, some part-time, some full-time, some freelance, some temporary.
Job applications had just one line to mention my education - school, degree, and major; I have a degree in English and Digital Media Studies. I could generalize my degree to a Bachelor's in digital communications. I minored in criminal and social justice. I took a digital photography class. I've completed course service-learning hours and internships with a variety of non-profits. I took an HTML coding class. I wrote a parody of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. I graduated with a 3.6 GPA. I got an A+ in a digital journalism class. I wrote a 20+ page essay for my capstone that I plan to expand into a book. My second capstone was a documentary I could submit to a film festival. These extra points of academic accomplishment were bullet-listed in applications where there was a degree description space, otherwise these were only recognized and respected in my LinkedIn profile.
There wasn't enough space in the education history line to explain all of the challenges I surpassed or all of the awesome awards and accomplishments I earned while getting the degree to write in my education history. I started a student org focused on newscasting. I was the VP of our Black Student Union for 2 years and spoke on behalf of the union at a peaceful protest following the death of George Floyd. I won recognition for Student Org of the Year - twice in a row. I became the student manager of the student engagement department. I was an active member of the Latino Student Union for over 3 years. I petitioned for a town-hall meeting for students and faculty to better our DEI awareness across campus. I was invited to a one-on-one meeting with the university president. I advocated for PRISM and LGBTQ+ acceptance across our campus. I hosted and evaluated numerous surveys to better serve our campus community. I participated in a plethora of volunteer opportunities and campus events. I was an orientation leader. I was an RA. I served as a mentor to underclassmen. My name consistently appeared on the Dean's List.
Suddenly it seemed like my degree did not carry much value. Few job postings prioritized candidates with my degree type - "digital communications but a degree in marketing preferred." It's like they wanted the skills earned from my degree as part of the job description, not the qualifications. Most job postings didn't seem to value my degree at all: "remote communications strategist - degree in journalism or other related field a plus, not a requirement." I had slaved for four years; four years of 18 - 21 credit hour semesters while spear-heading a student org and working anywhere from 2 to 4 jobs at a time, and some trauma healing/family drama because the Universe likes to keep herself entertained I guess. I was the first in my family for over 4 generations to earn a college degree. I took out tens of thousands in student loans. I went to an exam on 4 hours of sleep. I closed work at 1am and went to class the next morning at 8. I had nervous breakdowns and still got my 8-page essays turned in by 11:59pm.
But none of that seemed to matter. In the eyes of employers, overcoming all of those obstacles and challenges did not reflect how I was a good candidate for their position.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only thing employers seemed to really take into consideration was previous work experience; that shouldn't have been a problem for me, as my resume was rich with experience by having to work to pay for school anyway. I'm a previous graphic designer. I was an intern for a local newspaper. I was a full-time social media manager for one summer. I have various experience mentoring kids/students ages 14 through 19. I was a shift leader at Family Video before the pandemic made us close all our stores. I was a remote political journalist during the 2022 midterms. I've been a coffee barista and was promoted to opening shift leader after my first 30 days. I coordinated a friend's wedding. I became a freelance state manager for a remote election reporting company. I managed the student engagement department and adapted our traditional events to a virtual medium. I've filed parking permits and incident reports. I've painted yard signs. I've hosted people to their dining seats. I've supervised. I've lead. I've delegated. I've supported. I've created. And I've always worked so so hard because in any and every job I could not sleep at night unless I did my best.
The few jobs I did hear back from said they chose "a better candidate" - aka someone with more experience. Either places are preferring to hire older people who have had the chance to garner more experience after college, or getting a college degree is redundant - and that notion of my hard work, discipline, and financial sacrifices from the past four years amounting to arbitrary value was what really started to freak me out.
The college dorm I was escaping homelessness in started looking like a haunted house; the frustration and hopelessness was written in the walls. My life started getting scary. Had my hopes and dreams been built on a lie? Was college just a deferment of the demise set for me by being born and raised in poverty?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The vacancy of my roommate's absence was soon followed by my own absence of income, food, and purpose. No meal plan. No job. No savings. No fail safe. No side hustle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And no idea what to do next.

Skills and Digital Nomad
Tumblr media
What kind of skills Digital Nomad needs?
Digital nomad skills! Is it countable? I have no clear idea. But digital nomad skills can be divided to two sets.
The first is your job, the one you will offer and get paid for, these are usually called the hard skills.
The second is a set of soft skills that you need to develop to be able to master and enjoy the digital nomad life, we will just call it soft skills.
If you like to know more about this, join with my Facebook page or Instagram. I continually post these types of content constantly.
The Hard Skills
As  hard skills we can identify 6 categories of skills that you can offer remotely. Most of digital nomad jobs fall into those types of categories.
1. Writing
If you are good at writing, there are endless possibilities for what you can do as a nomad. Content creation, blogging, freelancing, copywriting, editing… are just some of the examples.
2. Creatives
Are you a Graphic designer? Video editor? Everyone needs media for their business and they need someone to provide these media. This someone can be you!
You can create promotional videos or edit videos for clients for example. Graphic design is very popular, designing logos is a great place to start. You can also become a vlogger or a youtuber with your video skills!
3. Marketing
Having a marketing mentality and skills is one of the best things you can have for a nomad journey. It’s a big umbrella that covers many job options underneath. Digital marketing, content marketing, SEO, advertising, strategy and social media marketing are just some of the examples.
4. Web/app development
One of the highest paying nomad job categories. In a world where everything is digital, skills like web design and development are highly in demand. Every business, every influencer and freelancer need a website or an app; businesses need e-shops and all of these are always on the look to hire a web developer/designer.
5. Assistance and consulting
Several businesses require virtual assistants to help them organize their work and appointments. You can also offer consultancy or coaching based on the skills or experience you already have. For example, a virtual accountant or a legal consultant or a life or fitness coach, are all jobs you can offer if you have the experience.
6. Languages Skill(Translating/Teaching)
You can teach languages online or offer translations, video or audio transcriptions online. Teaching English online is a very popular way of starting a digital nomad journey.
The Soft Skills
The truth is, it’s not enough to have only the job skills to become a digital nomad. There are several characteristics that you need to have to make your journey as digital nomad a successful one. Lets see 6 types of skills that will help you on your digital nomad journey.
1. Communication (Most Important)
Even if you are amazing at what you do, if you don’t know how to show and communicate that to your potential clients, these skills might go to waste.
Your work as a nomad will be mainly online, you need to know how to market yourself and your skills to close deals. Be clear, be persistent in your communication and honest about what you can offer and under what conditions.
2. Organization
As a digital nomad, you will be living out of your suitcase/backpack and moving from one place to another; if you are not organized, things that should be under control will totally spin out of it.
Find a system of organization you are comfortable with, for everything. From packing to priorities when travelling, budgeting and organizing your work, all of these are needed to ensure you have a good time and give your clients the best service.
3. Self-motivation
When you are travelling and the beautiful beach or mountain is calling you, but at the same time you have a deadline looming, who will motivate you? You! You need to motivate yourself to do the work on time, so that you can have the money to see and experience all that you want.
4. Flexibility
Life of a digital nomad is more unstable and has less elements you can control than the 9 to 5 job. You can lose clients, lose income sources or face unexpected obstacles while travelling. That’s why you need to be flexible and learn to adapt to changing situations while staying positive. Remembering why you are doing this and what you get to enjoy, will make it easier to go with the flow.
5. Calm
Life is full of stress, add to that the constant travel and you might think how do digital nomads not surrender to anxiety? The truth is, there is a lot of instability and stressors in the life of the nomad, as many things are not under control. However, this is part of the fun! You have to keep calm and deal with challenges as they come. Meditation, mindfulness, talking to a friend or self-care routines are all important ways of keeping a cool head.
6. Constant development
Digital nomadism is possible due to the availability of internet and technologies that keep developing, and you will need to develop with them. Keep learning and stay curious and updated.
your work has to go with the needs of the market. This is how you will be able to find clients who are willing to pay for your up-to-date skills.

You Should Hire A Virtual Assistant & Here’s Why
To Hire a Virtual Assistant is a suitable solution for your business if you are tired of spending hours in front of the computer without free time for yourself, your friends, or your family. You might be wondering if hiring a Virtual Assistant is worth it.
We’ve all heard about how a Virtual Assistant can help your business succeed. But how? Here’s a list of ten reasons you must hire a Virtual Assistant (VA) to help reach your goals.
What is a Virtual Assistant?
A Virtual Assistant provides remote services to different brands and businesses. Additionally, Virtual Assistant offers numerous benefits in the business, such as:

Top Three Reasons Why you Need a Virtual Assistant
1. Reduce Costs
Onboarding a new employee means additional expenses. Thus, when business owners hire a Virtual Assistant, it saves costs for training, benefits, and other fees. Considering a VA is an independent worker. Business owners can spend on something other than leave credits and benefits like a regular employee receives.
2. Saves time
Most of the VAs have experience in their expertise. This means that you can skip training. They know what to do and have the knowledge and skills to impact your business growth. And since VAs are remote workers, they know how to manage their time and tasks well. On top of that, a Virtual Assistant can multitask while ensuring quality outputs.
3. Proper tasks delegation
When you outsource, you are delegating tasks effectively. Why is that so? As your business is continuously growing, tasks are also increasing. In that case, you need to leverage a Virtual Assistant’s abilities in coping with duties. Similarly, your office employees can focus on their tasks, and you, as the owner, will focus on and prioritize core duties.
Where to Find an Effective Virtual Assistant?

7 Strategies To Future-Proof Your UK Accounting Practice
Tumblr media
In 2020, the global accounting software market was valued at $12.01 billion. By 2026, it is projected to reach $19.59 billion with an 8.5% CAGR (Mordor Intelligence, 2020).
However, ICAEW statistics show that 25% of all businesses still use paper records. This number includes many UK accounting practices and that is a serious concern. There seems to be a disconnect with the traditional process driven accounting industry and the new age businesses. Technology has become too ingrained into the generation of today. The new age business owners grew up with the technology and are swift in adapting to it and they expect their service providers to be just as technology savvy as them.
UK accounting practices must also adapt to the needs of clients instead of remaining stuck with age-old methodologies. Taking action toward implementing digital innovation is the next step for many accounting firms. Changing with the times is a necessity to attract more customers and increase profits. Here are 7 strategies for preparing Outsourcing UK accounting firms for the future.
1. Invest in the cloud & automation technologies
Over the past few years, cloud technology has expanded more rapidly than ever, especially for the accounting industry. Automated accounting systems enable accountants to automate numerous accounting tasks. Much popular accounting software is now on the cloud and keeping data on the cloud is acceptable for most businesses. QuickBooks Online, Xero, Dropbox, Dext, FreeAgent, and Kashflow are some of the cloud software popular with accounting firms. Integra balance is an emerging accounting automation software and is quickly gaining popularity with outsourced online accounting firms for its bot-based accounting automation solution.
2. Create a referral plan
Any business benefits from word-of-mouth referrals, but accounting and tax firms benefit even more. The easiest approach to encourage recommendations is via a referral program that rewards customers for referring you to new businesses. For each referral, existing customers can receive free services or additional benefits to encourage them to reach out to their friends, family, and associates. Ideally, this could be a self-sustaining marketing strategy that gives you all the benefits without any additional marketing expense.
3. Reduce inefficient spending and outsource where necessary
Identify where you are overspending by reviewing all of your expenses. Consider operating your firm remotely instead of paying costly office rent. Accounting firms can save money by outsourcing almost all their bookkeeping, accounting and tax jobs. Many highly profitable UK accounting firms have been using outsourcing as a strategy for many years now.
Outsourcing helps your staff to spend more time with the clients, meeting them face to face and thereby creating opportunities to add more value addition, earn clients trust and possibly win more new business. There are several accounting outsourcing service providers, and you need to carefully select the right provider that will fit well for your firm.
4. Elevate your firm’s brand and perceived value
If your Outsourced accounting services are perceived as valuable, you can increase your prices. Branding and management, strategic marketing, and exhibiting thought leadership in your industry can help elevate your brand. Give your website a facelift, make it more user-friendly whether your users are checking it out from their laptops or mobile.
5. Review your current marketing strategy
Your marketing strategy can also be improved by identifying a suitable target market. Thanks to social media, reaching out to target audiences has become much easier. You might want to refresh your website’s content if you have neglected it for a long time. Consider SEO, online advertising, and social media marketing. Make optimal use of free platforms like Google My Business, directories, etc. Write blogs about accounting tips, growth hacks for business, and industry updates regularly. Use keywords to optimize your website.
6. Re-evaluate the pricing for your services
The market changes constantly, so you should always revisit your pricing. To become more competitive, you can increase your service fees or reduce them. Rather than using a set pricing model, switch to a value-based model. A new client may choose an accounting firm with lower fees.
7. Provide additional services and remove unnecessary ones

Types of Virtual Assistants and What They Can Do for Business Growth
Your market is continually increasing and everything is, by far, positive in your company. The problem is you couldn't keep up with the demands of office work and other business needs. A smart move that you can make for your growing business is to hire a person fully-equipped with the right skills you needed and does not need your presence 24/7.
Who would have thought that someone remote can do meaningful work for you? The fast-advancing technology set the stage for a new breed of workers that benefit employers and emerging businessmen in a lot of ways. Virtual assistant or offshore secretaries can positively affect business growth and maximize productivity of employers in terms of seeking clients and winning them.
It is said that an average businessman who opts to do clerical jobs by himself spends more time in the office and becoming his own secretary. As a result, "real" businessman jobs are left out, which could potentially decrease business improvement. This is where online assistants come in; to do all those tasks for you while you focus on improving marketing techniques needed to gather clients. Depending on the nature of your business, you may choose one from the types of virtual assistants who can perform the duties you want them to make. Gone are the days when the best talents in the industry go solely to established companies; you too have the chance to hire "beyond compare" assistants that could become company assets.
Types of Virtual Assistants
SEO and SEM Virtual Assistants
For a modern businessman, internet marketing is not a strange word, but the question is, can you keep up with the fast-paced changes in the Internet? Hiring an SEM virtual assistant or online marketing virtual assistant is a good way to market your business in the Web. Note that SEM or search engine marketing encompasses all SEO strategies needed for search engine visibility. SEO assistants do several things that you may not know of when it comes to internet marketing. Basic tasks that an SEO assistant does for your company website are the following:
• On-page Optimization • Competition Analysis • Keyword Research • Domain Registration • Active Forum Participation • Bloggosphere Participation • Submission Services • Link Building • Content Marketing
These activities, along with a few more, will help you have greater internet visibility in search engine results. This is a great opportunity for you to advertise your company without necessarily paying expensive advertising cost.
Virtual Assistant Writer
Virtual writers are assistants who create your daily writing needs. As a businessman, it's really not in your job description to write creative contents in your company website or promotional blogs needed for advertising purposes. Why make a fuss out of it if you can hire a virtual marketing writer that translates your business ideals to striking sentences. In website development, good content writers are badly needed. Note that internet users are browsing services not to avail them directly but to find out more of them before making a deal. You need to employ a writer who can create convincing articles without giving an obvious sales pitch.
An efficient internet marketing writer creates SEO-ready articles populated with correct keywords. In other cases, article writers also create non-SEO related writing tasks such as technical writing and research.
Virtual Assistant Web Developer
Web developers are the lifeblood of any running website. They are responsible in creating a functional and creative website for your company and keeping it up to date. A virtual programmer delivers all your computer programming needs from creation, re-designing, to maintenance. Virtual programmers who are experienced in building company websites basically know what clients want to see in a website. Common services that virtual assistant programmers do for you are:
• Web Design Services • Graphic Design Services • Logo Design Services
For creative and programmers, they can act as a virtual assistant graphics artist and programmer all at the same time. These two roles commonly go together, thus making it possible for programmers to perform designing services. If you can get programming and designing skills all in one virtual assistant, just imagine the payroll cut cost that you can have! As an employer, you still have the privilege to employ two different professionals to work on both duties.
Virtual Employee
Hiring virtual employees are just like hiring contractual, off-site workers only that you reach them via phone or the Internet. They are hired to perform tasks in a remote location from your physical office and are working directly from your orders. Unlike other virtual assistants, a virtual employee is hired like your offsite employees but performs the tasks somewhere away from your office.
Virtual Administrative Assistant
Virtual administrative workers conducts all your office and clerical needs and act like typical office secretaries, only that they are working online. They are responsible in keeping your documents, presentations, schedule, and client communication needs organized and updated. In short, they do all the things that you hate to do as a businessman and a great way to take off all those time-consuming tasks from your priorities. Get away with email responding, phone call receiving, and presentation making without necessarily disregarding them by hiring online administrative assistants.
Virtual Financial Assistant
One of the most crucial aspects of your business is balancing income and expenses. In hiring a trusted virtual financial assistant, you can do away with the headache of bookkeeping and financial records of your company. They are just as qualified as traditional bookkeepers and are trained to handle different financial transactions such as banking and tax submission.
In choosing virtual assistants, make sure that they have the right skills that you need in your company. Many online assistants can do multi-tasking which could potentially save up your time and payroll expenses, but be reminded that if you want someone who can do specific jobs for your company such as programming or writing, your virtual assistant can efficiently perform them. The nature of your business should match your qualifications in finding virtual assistants.
Kristine Ferguson is a manager in a call center managing various virtual assistant working for American entrepreneurs. The company where she works also offers outsourcing web design services and online branding.

Your WordPress Solution: How to Hire the Right Developer
Who is a WordPress developer?
A WordPress developer is responsible for the development of a website, including front-end and back-end development. They have expertise in programming languages like HTML5, PHP, JavaScript, and CSS3. They must also understand website aesthetics, including on-screen element arrangements and font selections.
A WordPress plugin developer should be skilled in designing and implementing new features, guiding website architecture, and managing technical aspects of the content management system. They should also be able to create responsive designs and turn them into working themes or plugins. Key characteristics to consider when hiring a WordPress plugin developer are essential.
Guiding Steps to Hire A Good WordPress Developer
Searching to hire WordPress developer that specifies your goals and budget can be challenging and time-consuming. There are several helpful hints and methods you may employ to make the process go a little more smoothly. Let's take a closer look!
Determine the kind of WordPress developer you need
Before hiring a WordPress developer, clearly outline your needs and requirements. Create a project blueprint outlining features, functionalities, and desired pages. Seek inspiration from other websites and create a clear vision for your project.
Post the job description
Before deciding on the first meeting, any Web developer looking for work would anticipate having a project description available. As such, it is imperative to draft and record a comprehensive job posting. Including information about the position (full-time, part-time, freelancer), the kind of developer (back-end/front-end WordPress developer), and whether the work is remote.
Prepare a project brief
A project brief is essential before hiring a WordPress developer, outlining tasks, requirements, and understanding the buyer's journey. It's crucial to maintain brand identity and user experience, and build trust with the developer. If accepting payments, inform the developer about payment gateways and ensure secure customer information. Hiring a WordPress developer who understands your needs is crucial for a successful project.
Make a questionnaire
When screening candidates, it's recommended to prepare a questionnaire to cover all aspects of the job, qualifications, and skills. Questions could include their experience with WordPress code, expertise in creating original themes, SEO website optimization techniques, customer contact methods, development project duration, and similar projects. Asking candidates to show their previous works as an example can also help in understanding their qualifications and skills.
Examine their case studies and online portfolio
Anybody can identify as an expert on WordPress. However, it is your duty to review their portfolio to ensure that they are providing accurate information. You will get a deeper understanding of them and the services they provide as a result of this procedure. Moreover, if they have a personal blog or website that they have made themselves, it can also serve as evidence of their work.
Go through the testimonials
To assess a developer's credibility, read their previous client testimonials on social media and review sites. These reviews provide insight into their work quality and reliability. While some developers have their own customer reviews, it's recommended to conduct independent research and search for additional reviews on independent websites.
Examine their communication & soft skills
Effective communication and soft skills are crucial for a successful WordPress developer. It's essential to work with someone who provides timely updates, completes work on time, and maintains clear communication with teammates. However, assessing their communication and soft skills can be challenging, but a good interview process can provide insight into their abilities.
Technical & Coding Skills
Hiring WordPress plugin developers requires a specific technical skill set, including proficiency in technologies like CSS3, HTML5, jQuery, and JavaScript, experience in website user interfaces, responsive design, debugging tools, RESTful APIs, code versioning, hire php developers, experience with various WordPress themes or plugins, and fundamental knowledge of basic WordPress security best practices and maintenance.
Take pay expectations and pricing into account
When hiring a WordPress developer, consider your budget and potential candidates' pay expectations. Low prices may not indicate unsatisfactory work, as some developers may accept lower fees to expand their portfolios. Start with a middle-of-the-scale fee, but consider paying more for skilled candidates. Ask about the payment structure, as different developers charge differently, such as hourly or similar to traditional employees. Discuss important points before making a decision to avoid confusion and misunderstandings in the future.
Finalize the contract with proper documentation
To ensure a smooth project progress, it's essential to complete the contract with proper documentation. Include issues such as payment structure, ownership, data confidentiality, project scope, completion timeframe, guarantee for post-project support, and termination terms. Consult a lawyer or expert to ensure all major details are covered. This will help avoid misunderstandings and ensure a smooth project.
Wrapping up!
WordPress is a popular web development platform, making it crucial to find a skilled developer. However, hiring a WordPress developer requires thorough research and careful consideration. Following the steps provided in this blog can aid in your search, but there is no shortcut.
