The Longest Promise - finished
Mmmm, Shi Ying! I loved this bit. It really is in keeping with his idealistic, uncompromising self to declare that only a just god is worth being worshipped and if he needs to kill an unjust god to stop the injustice so be it.
Also, poor priest boy finally got laid.
This was delicious!
All that and a happy ending, because to me the man clearly came back and can now enjoy 27 years with his wifey. Honestly, it’s not even an open ending to me.
Overall, this was a shockingly enjoyable drama to me, a classic xianxia done well and that is something I find so rare as to be almost impossible since I am not a fan of the subgenre (I did not like Ashes of Love or The Journey of Flower or more recent if less famous example like The Starry Love.) Lion’s share of credit goes to Xiao Zhan and Ren Min who made their characters (types normally done to death) feel like genuine real people, and a screenplay that broke no new ground but did what it was supposed to do quite well (which, once again, harder than it looks.)
This is not a drama that’s going on my all-time favorites list the way The Ingenuous One did and it never made my heart sing the way flawed but incredible TTEOTM did, but it’s yet another cdrama in 2023 that I am glad I watched.
PS For the love of fish god, someone give Alen Fang a leading role!!!!
